Vicki Wickham on Ready Steady Go

"Well, the rocks pages podcast. This is Mark Pringle with me is my colleague Jessica Murison Bowie I'm mark and in third zoom window is very, very special guest Vicki Wickham Hi Vicki Hi both. The keys perched on her. New York, city this is eight o'clock in the evening London Time I've had my first Jones Hannukah Day and we'll be hearing sirens all of that sort of New York City soundscape. So for those who don't know I mean is legendary carrot tourneys business over the years I think as I say, produce on the fantastic pioneering pop TV series, ready steady go subsequently manager of La Belle, and in many ways, a CO create of La Belle was an artist and a friend and manager of Dusty Springfield and subsequently of the likes of Morrissey. Marr and Vicky tell us about how you got into pop music and as a professional activity totally by default. I would inland I was working. I had several jobs and I had one job that I really liked which I was working for radio BBC like entertainment it was cold. And My job was a production assistant and the writer, my producer, my boss Charles Chilton wrote these wonderful one hour specials. Flooding Allen or the moment or the songs from the First World War and so we have. Autism singers, musicians, actors, etc, etc etc and my job is to put all together. And I learned a lot needs to say but I I was thinking that it conciliates should be doing television radio and I don't quite know why but left thinking everybody would want me nobody walked in. One Luckily one of my really good friends Carolina with Carter was seeing somebody at associated rediffussion. Sunday could Elkin Allen. Let detail who set don't have it at the moment but. A secretarial job will come up. No I don't want to be the secretary. So he was great. He's lectured me and said, you want to be anything. You can just get your foot in the door and about a week later called me up and said come in. For you sat me down and said yes, your secretary but I promise you anyways cut a long story short. He had this idea for music show cooled ready steady go and by the time we will put together. The pilots can get at I was producing it. Did I know anything about pop music for? Thing but no did anybody else. So the show was picked up and luckily a couple of other young people we were young came in and we started working on a program could ready steady go at elk was mabus he left us alone. Yeah just great. It's it's amazing I mean ready steady go is so different from anything that come before it. Really I mean I suppose some the Jack Goods shows sort of pointed in direction to some extent but then you had a lot of really stiff stock not much pop music television full stop did you feel that what you're doing with revolutionary from very early point? At all we we just going out to you know as as you would our age going to clubs seeing people listening to Radio Caroline talking to people, and you know suddenly became very obvious that we could have these people on the show that when we went to see the rolling stones when we love Brian Jones who had the best hair in the will We could say come on the show and they did it was on the sleep. It was just gut reaction and knock I. Mean did anything to see any of this? No. Fantastic. I mean also. Undid you love always love music yourself. Personally was was all be something which is always chime to you because ready steady go was fantastic. Inner suspect it really focused free. Key American black music I didn't even know about black music I was. Gilbert and Sullivan. And South Pacific I knew nothing as we started ready steady. Very. Few black axe or autism in England. So inevitably, booking although the white exit cetera and the Springfield we became friends and dusty would play me these great blue soul rb records and that's when I fell in love with them and suddenly when we have these people own and literally would call agents and say other coming over, we could use the. and S Luckily, the show became big enough that it was worth people bringing them over because they knew they would be on the

"My Name Is Casey Fritos I'm your host, and this week I am joined by Brian Tahoe. Hi Everyone Seth macy. And Logan. Plants. And I just wanted to mention that Logan Plant has now been working as production assistant for the last year. So thank you so much for everything that you've done for us. We super appreciate it and we welcome you on the show this week. It's been an awesome year of NBC. Got This GIG last August starting my senior year of College McMahon. Twenty. It's GONNA be year. It's going to be the best year for me. At prediction was was very untrue, but I've loved working on NBC. Well, we did get to do a thing that we do everybody who's worked with gene for year, which is broken your house in spray painted the logo on your shirt. So yeah. Yeah, got. Bad. It's still drying right here. Comfortable. I Apologize. But Hey guys so much for joining me this week. Let's start off by talking about the big news, which actually Nintendo finally decided to reveal something before recorded. So I'm very grateful for that thanking Intendo, but we finally known antennas next scheduled release. It will be picked three deluxe out on Astra with. For Fifty, nine, ninety, nine. No. Yeah. Yeah. Okay. So You Brian, we're your pigment fan I look pick. Yeah, you. excited. Yeah, yes. Yes. Yes. I, am I'm all for. Every last great. We you exclusive game to no longer be that and to be brought to a platform where millions more people can enjoy it. And I've picked threes really fun. It's really good game. What I'm a little annoyed about with this is that. They. D listed the version. Basically, the exact moment that they announced this version and the version was on was selling for twenty dollars. So. That's kind of A. Weird situation. 'cause like. They're. They're basically telling their fans like if. If you have access to switch, this is where you'll have to play this game because you won't be able to get this anywhere else for cheaper. And also that the it's it's three times the price. Now, they're adding stuff to it, which obviously, we'll get into a, but yet my gut reaction was gay pigment three, and then also boo to the price of then also, you're totally going to pay that price, get pigment three under switch. So yeah, you're totally right. The an I also wanted to mention that we're bringing up the kind of skis tactic of taking it off the we shop. You. Guys noticed that all of the the vouchers that people bought I think it was, it was one hundred dollars for for two vouchers, one voucher per game, and they expired on July thirty first, which is right. Before they made this announcement I know at least one person in our podcast forums on facebook mentioned that they actually called Nintendo customer service and asked for the. Vouchers to get an extension and they granted him the extension by another year. It is now too late to do that. Ari. Or maybe not maybe if you have expired vouchers sitting around, you can call customer service and have them I'm so sorry, Nintendo customer service workers. You guys get a flux of collars because of this, but hey, it's worth a shot right especially if you haven't used them yet. But that was kind of embarrassed about this whole thing to like you mentioned, the vouchers are to one hundred bucks, which means if you buy, you know sixty bucks a sixty dollar game you're saving. Ten Bucks per game, which is a great deal. But you. They stopped selling them like a year ago. Yesterday, basically, two days ago, and with the expiration, you could put them towards stuff that was available for preorder. But because Pittman three wasn't available for preorder. You couldn't put it towards that Nintendo has been pretty quiet about. Announcing Twenty Twenty lineup arrested twenty twenty WANNA and so. You didn't really have anywhere to put that money and then. They retire those vouchers in three days. Later, there were like Pittman three and so A. Libertarian Carriers I. Wish I'd have panned out a little bit better. Yeah not crazy about I will. I would have been more forgiving if they announced it like the day, the vouchers expired because then at least people would be like I, have to spend it on this. Now, I mean, it still would have been a little bit questionable, but not nearly as various as this was i. don't Know Logan Seth? Did you guys by those doctors? No, I. Didn't I thought. It was I would just spend the extra ten bucks. I'm not really a digital player I mostly get physical stuff, but I thought another weird thing about it is like a third of the Games. You could get with voucher dollars. You weren't even saving anything on a bunch of the options. So that was another kind of weird part about the voucher system. I was just never onboard with the whole thing. You. No I didn't buy the batches. I. Actually Forgot

Top 5 Films of 2020 (So Far) / Inception (Nolan

"Welcome to film spotting another week another delay Josh for ten at the latest from Christopher Nolan that film now scheduled for an August twelfth release. It means I guess we can space out these final. Few films are Nolan. A little bit more. Yeah, I suppose it gives us that, but still sad news I mean obviously for both of us for most people one of the most anticipated movies of the year just to keep see it getting pushed back. Yeah, and you have to wonder whether or not August twelfth is realistic with Covid. Nineteen cases spiking all over the country. Nolan's inception, which celebrates its tenth anniversary. This year is as of this recording Josh still scheduled to return to theaters, tenants original slot on July seventeenth. So you have Nolan doing basically what we did. When the pandemic he went to his archive for content, sure and we, we went back to movies. We've for the most part already talked about here on the show. These films do comprise Nolan retrospective what we're calling the Uber Review and it continues with the inception this week. Our podcast listeners. Listeners will hear some listener feedback from our recent Spielberg show, we did a forty fifth anniversary. Sacred Cow Review of jaws, and we power ranked the five decades. Spielberg's directing career just a few weeks ago, before taking a quick break, that was a fun show Josh. And surprisingly we only got a few angry emails about your daring to play Spielberg's nineties output in your last slot number five. Yeah, well sometimes when you're faced with the truth Adam, there's not much more you can say. Yeah I did have at four, so I'm not sure that I'm shielded from all that hatred, either we will get to all that later in the show, but first adamant. I have seen a fair number of new releases this year. Just you know at Home Hey Adam and Josh. This is your former production assistant. Andy Mitchell with a recommendation for your best film of two thousand so far. That film is Sam failures disclosure. Documentary about. Nothing less than the history of cinema and television through the Lens of the transgender community, it may look like a typical activists film, but it plays more like the story of film series that Markelle cousins did a few years ago weaves together clips. From from the silent era today with fascinating reactions from dozens of trans artists. I'm telling you I did not expect to come away from this. Thinking a daytime talk show like Jerry. Springer might have actually been helpful in some way, so check it out. It's streaming now on net flicks. I, hope you give it a watch. Thanks for the show here's hoping for a better back half of twenty twenty, always nice to hear from our former PA Andy Mitchell and a great recommendation there. I know we've both been rushing over the past week to fit in some movies that we hadn't caught up with yet this year. I did make time for disclosure after Andy's recommendation and even though it didn't. Didn't make my top five. I'm with Andy highly recommend the film and he mentioned it almost playing more like a story of film series. I think that's what's so remarkable about the documentary is if Sam Feder had come to me for any advice on how to approach the subject matter. I might have said if you're GONNA. Try to tell the entire history of. transgender representation in cinema you probably either have to pick that lane or pick the lane of telling these more personal stories of the various performers and artists who are following in the wake of that, and who are now carving out their own identities on screen, and how far we've come talk about that evolution with maybe a little bit of that perspective. Josh of course needed, but it would divide. Divide the documentary too much, and somehow it is this absolutely thorough edifying look at the way. Cinema has typically represented transgender identity, but it also reveals these really amazing personal stories of these artists so definitely recommend disclosure available now Netflix and I suppose with that Josh Let's get into our countdown. It has certainly been an odd year, but we feel like we've seen enough movies and certainly more. Small movies, maybe in terms of the big Hollywood releases. We haven't been able to get out to the theater. That's for sure, but it's really been a boon for video on demand opportunities, and for seeing a lot of movies that would fit into our golden brick type of category I have three potential golden bricks among my top five, so movies made by new. New Directors or new to US director. Is that similar for you? Yeah I think that's what's had the most effect on my left. Compared to previous years, which is a good thing you know we. We do our best to give attention to these smaller films and this strange year without major theatrical releases. We've been able to do even more of that so i. I think this list would probably look a little different If there had been the usual theatrical release date, but I still feel really good about the films that I have on my list, and it's going to be a mix of some. We've talked about even reviewed together on the show Adam and a few a couple that we haven't

"What came right before this, or what about this character should I be aware of? Yeah. And then I tell them. After tell at some point, I think there are a lot of directors who. You know, one of the reasons that they became directors other than you know our well. Yeah, it's not not necessarily because they desired power, but because they were comfortable wielding it. Like I think that one of the reasons that people with social privilege are disproportionately represented in the ranks of directors is because they don't question their entitlement, basically. Yeah, totally. Is that what you're gonna say, totally. I mean, I was gonna say, go back to privilege, maybe but privilege and entitlement often go hand in hand, right? Yeah. Yeah. He said the straightway to to the straight might woman. I think I think that, yeah, I didn't. I'm more comfortable directing than I am sitting right here right now talking to you. I'm more nervous right now. Imagining that this is gonna be on the airwaves and the sound of my voice and all that crap on. But when I'm directing, of course, I get nervous and of course I make mistakes, but it really feels like I'm in the right place. I'm utilizing all of the creativity that I have that I want to express sounds corny, but it's true. Did you feel that way when you were young? I mean, you spend time on movie sets as a kid because you're stepfather was legendary producer. Did you look at that and think this is something I want or something I could do when you were a teenager, whatever. No, on the film sets that I was on as a little kid. And then later as a production assistant. I was nowhere near the director or the action and I didn't know what was going on. You know, I'd see some of the director whisper into an actress year and I couldn't imagine what really an advice he was giving her ha. Now, I know it's like sit to the left up straight, so I didn't know what really directing was, or it didn't occur to me that I could do that at all. So how did you come to believe that you could? Because I think at some point you have to believe that you could in order to actually do it, right? Yeah. Isn't that crazy? I wonder what made me think I could do it. I directed a short at NYU. That was probably one of the worst times in my life. I, I mean, making the movie. I was so in over my head that I literally wished I would get hit by a car. I was so anxious. I was really like one of the first times I felt serious anxiety, and then my producer was in over his head was throwing up in the bathroom and the movie cost too much money and took forever. And then I thought, okay, I'll be a writer. And then I started writing a bunch and went to Columbia grad school for writing see, but they make you direct videos. And so when I was directing the videos, I thought, okay, I'm better at this now. I like this. And they turned out well. So I thought, okay, I'm going to try directing again. You grew up in New York and partly in Los Angeles. Yes. And you move from one to the other when you were like twelve? Exactly..
