Apparently not in december nineteen ninety-five about a month after the interview aired. Diana wrote bushier. Note saying martin. Bashir did not show me any documents nor give me any information that i was not previously aware of. I consented to the interview on the bbc without an undue pressure and have no regrets concerning the matter but diana was likely unaware that bashir had shown fake documents to her brother in order to gain access to her as the bbc investigation concluded. It had no bearing on the interview. She died in a car accident in paris in august. Nineteen ninety-seven if the bbc had properly investigated the complaints and concerns first raised in nineteen ninety. Five my mother would have known that she had been deceived. Prince william said in his statement she was failed not just by a rogue reporter but by leaders of the bbc. Act the other way rather than asking the tough questions as the bbc said. The corporation swiftly issued an unreserved apology. On friday morning the bbc's director-general davie said it is clear that the process for securing the interview fell far short of what audiences have a right to expect. We are very sorry for this. Lord dyson has identified clear failings. He continued while the bbc cannot turn back the clock after a quarter of a century. We can make a full. And unconditional apology. The bbc offers that today. What is likely to happen next. The uk government may now look into the structure and governance of the bbc which receives much of its funding from british taxpayers. robert buckland. "He had with bashir and diana shortly before the nineteen ninety five interview in which the journalists had told them. Diana's mail was being intercepted and her car tracked and that her friends and employees were plotting against her. According to spencer he also told them that prince. Edward was being treated for a and that queen elizabeth. The second was a comfort eater the same month. The board of the bbc appointed. John dyson a former judge and justice of the british supreme court to conduct an independent inquiry into how bashir obtained the interview. What did the inquiry find dyson concluded in his report on thursday. That bashir had deceived and induced earl. Spencer to arrange a meeting with princess diana. Although he found princess. Diana would probably have agreed to be interviewed by any experienced and reputable reporter in whom she had confidence. Even without the intervention of mr bushier. The reporter used cool. Means to obtain the interviewee said. The bbc also failed in. Its editorial mission. Dyson said both in not investigating fully enough claims about bashir's behavior and in failing to broadcast those claims when they became public knowledge without justification. The bbc fell short of the high standards of and transparency. Which are its hallmark and quote. What does martin bashir say happened. In the internal investigation in nineteen ninety-six bushier admitted commissioning a graphic designer to create fake bank statements and showing them to earl spencer but he has always said that he was already in close contact with princess diana before he commissioned the statements and that they played no role in his securing. The interview in a statement released on friday after the dyson report was published but she or said mocking up. Bank statements quote was a stupid thing to do and that he regretted it deeply however he continued to insist that they had no bearing whatsoever on the personal choice by princess diana to take part in the interview in his submission to dyson inquiry but she took issue with spencer's notes of the meeting in which he made wild speculation about the royals. How is it possible that someone seeking to ingratiate himself with a member of the royal family would make comments like this that not only appear to be me telling her what she has told her friends or employed others to do but also that has allegations in it. That could be resolved in a minute in a second. He told dyson. it just doesn't make sense. And i believe that much of it is probably fabricated but having interviewed both men and reviewed the evidence dyson sided. With diana's brother i entirely accept the truthfulness and accuracy of earl spencer's account. He wrote bashir resigned from the bbc where he had been religion editor on may fourteenth shortly before the dyson reports publication. He has been in poor health for several months. "Very cleverly did not answer. Back about the oprah winfrey interview with and another to say other than to say that it would be discussed privately and would not be a big spat in public. Which was very sensible. And i think you'll be hearing anything from prince charles on this particular issue. I'm sure he's got many private thoughts on the matter. I'm sure yeah also there another dimension here beyond the bbc but just how institutions or corporations work in. I mean there's another very famous There wasn't an interview but that was a flaw in the documentary. And i think it was sixty eight sixty nine. The royal family got the cameras in. They followed them around for six month. was actually writing about it. Quite recent name Rushing pitcher prince philip. Birsh i went over there. They buried that and the reason they did was It shows the sort of fairly average upper class. English family a going about the place squabbling each other all over barbecue and things because you know the the the they got us in the room here is that the other big institution at the heart of our life the royal family is hardly ever scrutinized and and anybody who holds a mirror up to that gets burned. You know darling and how he gets. Burn meghan gets burned Very good at closing ranks and Not always particularly good at looking after the the study more interesting people like diana mega. Hurry cheese to step slightly out of line. That they're very very good at their own propaganda. And i and i and bbc is deemed to stepped out of line as william did last not the happy to go off the bbc. I you won't be seeing this. Diana interview with martin bashir officially anyway ev. The weather parts of leaked onto youtube with the other way. I don't know. But i'm the one that you mentioned the flying the wall Series it was series. Was it were a long documentary. I it i think it was to celebrate. Charles's twenty pastor that was the ideal fit was heavily involved in it which is why rich which is why. Apparently they use some scenes in it and recreated the meta crime is that right. That's right and there's a few crips. You can find a niche. But they buried. I the reason they buy the reason they vary that was because it removed all the mystique. It normalized yeah the whole off. The royal family base is exists on this conceit. Steve and then being some baxter. The family than the average person's i you know and it's something very few people will dare to china enjoy arch. The bbc itself remains hugely reverential. And it's news coverage of the royal family. There's only a nice greasy. And i find deeply bizarre that this maddie ancient medieval institutions still continues in this country today. I think you're talking about the royal family on the bbc. But i thank you okay. We'll we'll final call. Shirley hi shirley. "So martin bashir got it and we can debate how he got it and of course. That debate has been resolved now with this report. He got it in a way that was deceitful. But how did the interview go. How did it proved to be unhelpful for the princess. Well that's that's a big saugus. That i mean first of all. I think that you can't really just say that you can't you can't associate modern basheer from this. I mean he had played with all sorts of ideas and things. He stood her up yet got angry. He had got her to trust him. I believe he was even cooking for her and things and so and he seemed up. Evidently he's very personable character and he's very good at getting people on side with him so he can learn things out of them case she may have wanted to say some of these things and she found a very sympathetic audience. I'm sure he greatly encouraged me. What a pity that she couldn't have listened to more sensible people. Like patrick jephson. Who is mentioned earlier on her private secretary who did as best job he possibly could to keep her on the straight and narrow because she was always being influenced by other people in varying off in and didn't even tell him she was to do this. The whole thing was highly deceptive. And that's because of the paranoia that was instilled into her into an already troubled nine. I mean they were playing with somebody who wasn't really particularly sound of mind. You could almost say at that point katie. I think it was patrick. Jephson who in the panorama last night made Made the point that as a consequence of this interview The rather irreparable damage it did in terms of the princess and her relationship with royal family and it led eventually amongst other things obviously to her divorce as a consequence she finds herself alone in the world as it were in terms of royal protection. That was taken away. She didn't have the kind of courtiers and advisors and helpers that she would have had previous me let me just into 'cause isn't important voice as she didn't have her protection strict away as a result the hr h going to. She chose to let go of her security but she did. You're right she did lose force of the palace and and the machine around the you know so she was very much not a failing on the part of the policy. Yes i think it probably would. I mean they knew that. Diana was leased cannon. They were very clear how dangerous she could be. I mean we'd had panorama. I mean the the outcome of panorama let the queen writing down on charles and telling them to get to divorce and so that was the beginning of the end diner and i'm sure there have been many computations at the palace. The had things been handled differently. Had not been so called but i think it was presumably. She wouldn't have taken. She wouldn't have taken protection from the from the palace would she if she was so concerned about surveillance and if she was paranoid she didn't trust anyone at the appropriate beneath loyal staff members. People patrick jesmyn who were loyal to the lars likes ken war. Who who worked at for twenty years and would have died for diana These people were on her side but the problem was she had how much we the best we i. I suppose it's guesswork. How much should he puts an online. How much was deficient. Diana's parts before. I mean i think the point to make is is however she got into it. Could well be barbara. Walters and diane sawyer and other big doyennes afford costing three one wanted that into china. She's going down to feet..

And he's about his a stopped clock style and is fun this amending his clothes. I actually loved this interview so much. Omen some of the gems that came out of this. I mean i just love. Stop clock style. What a way to put your clothes away. You know like that's the kind of phrasing we all need But it is funny because he makes a point like you know as we look towards a way to be ways to be morrison Sustainable in our lives. Fashion is a a huge polluter in the environment and and really impacts the the environmental leads to climate change. All these things that we know are terrible. Something that you know charles has really stood up for and against his entire life and so seeing him approach and even his lifestyle and the clothes that he wears it. It really shows that he's sort of talks walks the walk. What's the saying omid helped me talk. Talk the walk. The talk is that a saying. That's the thank you but it's not just talking about climate change. He's really. he's wearing old clothes to help us absolutely but also behind really interesting movements. That i think we're seeing a lot more of in the fashion world. This will focus on sustainability and ethical sourcing. Charles himself is actually getting into the fashion business. And of course this interview had a purpose. It was about a year ago that we heard that prince charles was actually getting into the faction against around this time last year. Here teams or his foundation has teamed up with the ucs net supporter group on a collection of men's and women's wear will debut various in it's called the mo modern art design projects and.

"Thanks for joining me on the show. Robert it's been awhile since you've joined us on the airport. But it's this is a particularly big story. And i think one that has really seen a mixture of us from royal correspondents and commentators. Who surprised by this revelation. Some not so surprised including yourself. I mean the only issue. I've got to have a particular issue members of the royal family not revealing the medical conditions. Of course that's pop possible The way we abide by the rules of the media now but the puck butler here is the should not have been in denial or once a legitimate question been put to the palace. This wasn't the fled to question and it came from on high and very high source. And i made sure the the where of that they said. Well you know we get goes by every day. This is an impeccable. This is the case in point here. Well that's denial in any anybody's quote and then of course you have all the details of all the reasons why people should after feel that medical condition which we fully understand but if you at anyway a denial then of course. It doesn't leave the position. I for the media. I e the editor to make a judgment on whether to run the store not based on his rehab is is fitting of the source in the very very very good so absolutely surprised by adding of covet. The rules that he is set up in misled him that way before. So i was disappointed. Disappointed that william decided to make his cape his medical condition. Private disappointing the way that was handled because journalists he's had to reveal stores donald trump to worry about the. Ms wrote wool. When we're embedded with troops to al jumped to be part of a cover up a truck non transparent and will be limited so in my opinion it was the wrong move. I understand the why when locals panic his father denounce covid his junction. A nonsensical covid and there was in hospital. But that's not really the point. The point here is. It shouldn't mislead the media on the rules that they have to buy the bottom line. Is you put out effectively. Denial because that means trump make a judgment of the road. I think what really stood out to me about. You'll come entry this week as you say this is. Everyone is entitled to keep sets aspects of their health. Private should not be their desire but as you went on to say it did show a poor judgment in sort of by not telling the truth. Now one of your tweets spoke about asking or cape kensington palace. Being several times by the media whether prince william had contracted the virus and journalists would categorically told. No he then go on to call it a serious issue of trust. When i is that i believe that. Yeah i mean. I know for definite exactly when i put the request on the reason i put it in writing was because i had a feeding that this would come back and this ad come from a very serious source was last seen in a only my seuss. It was a very very senior source so we knew that it was not some flyer. Now i understood afterwards hundred agendas a context cut us about this. But i was not about them. This about what i was worried about. Is this saying that you know we get cooled everyday about with impeccable sources and they took a turn out to be anything is fine but dolton add as years. This is the case in this particular instance because that means as as a newspaper we could possibly run out possibly run that story because they going against a denial a flat denial from the politics..

"Who were the original publications to break the news that he was still determined to fulfill his engagements and he wanted to sort of keep calm. Carry on that sort of typical for approach. He of course seemed very fit healthy and a lot of the engagements that you and i were covering at the time most of which were done via zoom but sources told the newspaper that he was hit prissy haunt by the virus even saying that at one point. He was struggling to breathe. Yeah i think that's part of what is so interesting about this story. Is that you know. Obviously it's a health issue and that is sensitive and people can make their own decisions about you know reporting this has of their health but also he is future king someday and to know that both you know the to next in line for the throne had corona virus. is certainly Something that would spark a concern But it's also as you say an interesting question of transparency from the palace and i could see people easily you know. There's the threat that people can now question things going forward. You know if this was not revealed what else could maybe not be revealed. And and so. It's a delicate balance. Between you know the right to protect privacy of your your medical history and you know wanting to make sure that people trusted in your leadership and trust in your guidance absolutely there was a really interesting piece of commentary in the washington. "You about megan. So you mentioned that She says she's gonna stay or spokesperson for source. Said she's going to say very politically active. But i know that you know. Sh she and and harry. We're both somewhat criticized by you. Know certain media outlets in certain people about getting to political royals should never be political issue. Never support voting for one person or one party in an election so how can meghan practice political activism but still sort of Do it appropriately in the name of a royal. I mean is that possible to do both. I mean i would say that. The the example that both harry and meghan avoid you've given us in recent months is kind of wet. The line i would say is members of the royal family as you say have to oh always politically neutral and there are many reasons. I think that you know when we look back at the queen when she gave that speech to the nation and to the commonwealth at the start of our first. Lock down here. It brought together people of the country in a way that i think if you represented a particular party or political group would have been difficult a lot more difficult that political neutrality. I think really comes in handy. When comes in comes in useful as leading. Monarch what i would say. Is that harry and meghan. I think have really found this ability to communicate with particularly young people of america and just it's really encouraging them to get involved in politics. I think it's a conversation that we often hear from them about using their voices for the better in a couple like to help encourage youth across the world's to find their own platform and speak up for the things that mean the most to them and when we look at the elections exactly what they've encouraged people to do which is simply to use the votes for the change of the world that they want to live and and that's really where the messaging has ended so. I think that they really have really found this place already. I think harry is. We've seen as played a much smaller role in this mechanism was an american long before she was a royal and i think to expect her to say nothing would be completely inappropriate and despite all of the criticism that we've seen in sections of the press i haven't heard one negative word coming from within the royal households themselves so i think sometimes that criticism or the controversy that we see written about is often very different to is actually felt really interesting. I never even thought of that. That you know the way the palace Views what they're doing could be totally different. Of course than what you know Certain tabloids or media outlets are reporting. I think we've gotten so used. To sometimes linking the two together but I it's curious and interesting that you haven't really heard rumblings from palace. We often see the the usual phrase out controversy or palace fears or whatever it is The tabloids will use and it's often not the case. I think a lot of just great for a headline and makes you want to click But the information itself isn't always so accurate however one thing. That was very accurate. This week was a report in the sun latest this. The prince william was treated by doctors as mahal. Hyme in norfolk after covid nineteen diagnosis six months ago. This this shocked me were you. Did you know any of this. Were you shocked. I was personally surprised by this. I know there are some that had said that they had heard that the diagnosis was made much earlier in the year and they had either been sort of pushed away from covering it or not given the confirmation needed to run such a serb. This was news to me. It was in march. Of course we had that prince. Charles had covert nineteen but then there have been no other members of royal family that came forward since to say they tested positive. We know that safety. The countess of wessex. Just a month ago went into brief period of isolation having come into contact with someone with corona virus but again the palace very transparent about this so i think basis where the surprise was that prince william our future king had kept quiet. They steig this at a time. When arguably probably would have had great impact on a whole nation of young people who at the time and always myself i would include in weren't quite so afraid of the corona virus. This was a time when many people were coming down with the virus or even many debts was sort of tallying up but we've already focused on the impact. It was having on an older community. I think at the time where we saw corona virus really having detrimental impact on the older community. Whether it's three diagnoses will three even the death. Though the numbers of deaths that were racking up at the time young people weren't really part of that sort of group that was sort of fearful of the corona virus. And i think hearing someone like prince william had gone through it probably could have high to really positive impact at the time but of course there are many reasons behind him not putting that information out there. I think at the time it was said that will source told the sun newspaper. Who were the original publications to break the news that he was still determined to fulfill his engagements and he wanted to sort of keep calm. Carry on that sort of typical for approach. He of course seemed very healthy. "Royal family and your host in its sky be joined by the lovely. Abc news correspondent omid. Can you believe that our podcast last week. We were dressed up in halloween costumes. It feels like a lifetime ago. As i sit here in the country second nationwide lockdown it's a sobering reminder of exactly once lifted. We'll be back to it someday. Omid lee in the meantime you on the race. Yes right now. I'm in paris. We we A they say but this is. This is being fast. This is not your first. Stop actually being on quiet journey. Since the loss louis and we ask that we were in niece and then paris and then vienna and then back to paris know unfortunately covering a lot of terror attacks recently and also new lockdowns across europe so it has been quite a busy week on top of the. Us election. i have to say that What's been interesting about travelling around europe. This week is that everyone is is nervous and stressed about. The next lockdown know are happening right now. All over the continent They're they're worried fearful of love. terror alert levels or getting risen across the continent as well and then on top of that. There's so much interest in the us. Election that I don't know about you. But i'm exhausted. It has been a long week at. Keep seeing jokes where it's like. Oh it's like tuesday's lasted for five days and that's how it feels right now. I know i feel like i have had my eyes glued to the same coverage since how many things ago was now absolutely gripping stuff but a time of huge anxiety for a nation that no doubt wants to see this come to a conclusion. Yeah i mean it's not just the nation. Either i think that's what's so impactful is the world is really watching. What's happening right now. Everyone wants to know what's going on. You know i couldn't believe it i am. I got my haircut in vienna. Fun fact it's one of the few places that while they're in locked out let their hair salon stay open. So i took advantage of that i did. I got a nice trip before. I head back to the uk. Were locked on right. Now as you mentioned and i heard it will be next to me. She was speaking in german. So i didn't know what she was saying but she said the word florida they were talking about florida and the counts. That i just come in. And i mean it's shocking. It's unbelievable that Everywhere everywhere in the world is really watching wanting to see what happens. A lot of these in the weeds moments as well really aimed at things like electoral college votes in different states and the timing of different counties being reported i mean. I'm shocked that americans are talking about this little known young people in austria and people in paris. It's it's really incredible. It's a decision that will ultimately affect the entire world. I think often were leads. And the world sort of follows. We have you know if we look back. Even the first man on the moon. Or whatever was america's often i think for many countries what happens after a presidential election is just as concerning interesting to those outside of the. Us is in was being very interesting about this election. It was the first time. I can think that we've had a member of the british royal family in the votes. The duchess of sussex spokesman confirms sense voted in the election this year. It was one of the reasons that she told gloria steinem she'd actually returned to the us for now. Of course it's being very vocal about the importance of voting and being involved in the election and.

"We're here they laid the first stones of Windsor Castle. That makes some of the. Almost a thousand years old. These trees GERMINATES has during the reign of William the conqueror in ten, sixty, six from a simple acorn. By the time that headed the eighth lived here they grown into mature impressive giants. An amazingly some of those very same trees still survive here today. They're bit no unholiday. But there's still very much alive. While these been growing around thirty, five billion people have lived our lives on our planet. That's thirty five, billion lifetime's worth of hope love fear and dreams. In that time humankind has invented air travel. Vaccines and computers. We've explored every part of the globe. Sequence the human genome, an even escaped US atmosphere. A speed of innovation has been incredible. But so too has acceleration of our impact. Over my grandmother's lifetime the last nine, hundred years or so. Are Impacts accelerated so fast that our climate oceans. Nature. All that depends on them are imperil. This. Stood here for centuries. But never has it faced a decade like this. We start this new decade. That is the most consequential period in history. The Sciences. Irrefutable. If we do not act in this decade. The damage that we have done, we'll be a reversible. And, the effects felt not just by generations but by all of us alive today. And what's more this damage will not be felt equally by everyone. It is the most vulnerable. Those were the fewest resources and those who've done the least to cause climate change who will be impacted the most. These stop facts so terrifying. How. Can we hope to fix such massive intractable problems? It may seem overwhelming. But it is possible. Humans have an extraordinary capacity to set goals and strive to achieve them. I've long been inspired by President John F Kennedy's nineteen sixty one mission to put a man on the moon within a decade. He named it the Moonshot. It seem crazy. We don't need just launch the first satellite. Putting a man on the moon that quickly seemed impossible. But this simple challenge encompassed so much. He called it a goal to organize and measure the best of our energies and skills. In taking that giant leap for mankind. The team behind the Moonshot, united millions of people around. The world. That this crazy ambition wasn't so crazy after rule. And along the way, it helped the invention of breathing equipment, cat scanners, and solar panels. But now, rather than a moonshot for this decade. We need a shots. We must harness that same spirit of human ingenuity and purpose and turn it with laser sharp focus in urgency on the most pressing challenge we have ever faced. Repairing. Planets. The shed goes for our generation a clear. Together we must protect and restore nature. Clean. Our. Revive our oceans. Build a waste free world. And fix a climate. We must strive to all of this in a decade. If, we achieve these goals by twenty thirty allies won't be worse. I mean won't have to sacrifice everything we enjoy. Instead, the way we live, we'll be healthier cleaner smarter and better for all of us. The global response to the COVID nineteen pandemic and the funds flowing into the economic recovery. Demonstrate how much can be achieved when those positions of power come together. And decide to act. We built hospitals overnight. repurpose factories. Hold billions into the search for a vaccine and better treatments. We've been inspired by heroes emerging every community across the world. Young people no longer believe that change is too difficult. They witness the world ton on its head. They believe that the climate crisis and the threat to our by diversity deserves our full attention ambition. And the right. So now is the time for each one of to show leadership. Whether you're a farmer in the US a tech owner, in China, a politician in Kenya, a bank in person. A fisherman in the Maldives, a community leader in Brazil. Or a student in India. Every single one of us has a role to play in hunting whatever opportunity we have. I'm committed to using the unique position that I have to help set those a short goals. I'm reward people across every sector of society and in every part of the world who do verb it to help achieve. Some people are motivated to act by a crisis. But for many. The incentives act only comes when they believe that change possible. That it isn't a lost cause. If people really believe that these challenges these US shots are possible. Just imagine all the potential would unleash. I'm determined to start an end this decade as an optimist. While saw generation represents just a blip in the lifetime of these magnificent oaks. We have the power and potential to ensure that they. All on earth thrive for another thousand years and more. But only if we now unleash the greatest talents of our generation. To repair our planet. We have no choice but to succeed. Thank you..

"Like that. That sounds like a sword. Lori. But it's called M A R C H I O N E S S says she has some kind of Royal title, and she's married to this other guy who's like twenty years older than her, and she was considered to be she and Kate and William are good friends. She's like the same age her husband's twenty years older. And she was considered the best dressed woman William in Kate's wedding. Okay. We'll find her last weekend wrote the story was that rose Hanbury is getting pushed out of the group. Okay. And that story was just kind of nothing was happening except. Prince william. Went to Richard k or someone on behalf of Prince, William and flat out denied the story. Now, what do we know about the royals? They only deny. What is true, right? Yes. So what happened is like why did they deny it? This would have all been renting out. And what is the story? The story is that there's an affair happening in turn up tufts Ville in the little village of Norfolk, and it involves William and rose the two s thank you down eighty. Yes. She's the she's the wife of the marquess a Mark has the marchioness. And of course, there is a Royal tradition. Of aristocratic ladies sleeping with the future. King of England. That's convenient isn't that it's gone back centuries. So anyway, now, the British papers are and no one is reporting is basically what Richard k was told this story is not true. And we will sue anybody who writes, well, again, Laurie what you just said denial reveals the truth. I hope it's Kate having their fair with Rosa that would make my day. I mean it went a temper tantrum. And now all the papers. No one is writing about it. But I guess it is set the the neighborhood is the neighborhood is talking. But that one is. And so I wonder if Dickie arbiter needed to go and see some stuff to try and draw attention away from the stories. They are being written about the story that would have sorta gone away. Yeah. I think. British people really appreciate. This Royal reportage journalism. Listen on the podcast. Listen that denial was such a bad idea. They should have just not said anything remember denial fueled the fire. Never explain never complained. That's right. Okay. Listen when we come back.
