Meghan, The Duchess of Sussex: ‘If you listen to what I actually say, it’s not controversial’

"Meghan Markle is sharing how she deals with her haters and a discussion for Fortune Magazine's most powerful women summit. She says that she has a sense of humor about it and just keeps real. It's about being authentic, and if you look back at anything that I've said. It's really interesting because it often ends up what ends up being inflammatory. It seems is people's interpretation of it, but if you listen to what I actually say. It's not controversial. And actually some of it is is reactive to things that just haven't happened. Okay. So she talks about being authentic guys thing Meghan Markle is authentic that girl in your group who's like I'm real I like to say like it is I'm always real. Things that you say because I truly think that she is very careful with her words because I do some very smart with it. She's very smart. It's the things that she doesn't say. The things that she didn't say about moving her family from one side one side of the world to the Knicks how hard that could be. She's not saying she hates her inlaws everybody as their in laws give us a little. She says what? Sometimes it's hard. We ever is the Queen. I. Don't think you could say that I mean I think she has to show respect to the authority that the clean has and says, she can't be wine. Lovely. As much as anybody else. But every now and then you can admit sometimes crosses the line. Is. Not. Her mother law is not the Queen of England or or the Prince of England like it's totally different think and she's tried to navigate I think I think I will say in their defense I think she realized that she was not going to be able to survive in that reality of being a part of the royal family, the Royal World and the Royal Protocols they have now moved to the United States. They haven't been here that long we've been in a quarantine for the majority of. The time that they've here. So I feel like now she's going to figure out and navigate and see how she's going to navigate through becoming more authentic and approachable. But also you think about it with the royals are the only sort of old old school institution where like not everything is on and not everything is on instagram. They're not putting all of their business out there and so I think she's authentic to the level that she can be authentic actually don't even really do that many interviews so. We just bits and pieces here and there and maybe. Not, working down more she's up breaking her breakfast smoothie in the morning for.

Interview with Misty Copeland

"Hey everyone it's currently this show might sound a bit different today because the scam is still working from home for the time being due to cove nineteen. Today Misty Copeland joins me and skin from the couch she the most famous ballet dancer in the world she made history when she became the first black female principal dancer with the American Ballet Theatre. She has also a bestselling author philanthropist and advocate her new children's book. Bun heads comes out this September mystique. Thank you so much for being here. I am so excited. To, be talking to you welcome to skin from the couch. Thank you so much. I'm really excited to. So I was kicked out of ballet at age four. So naturally made sense that I. Did this interview with you very excited for a cer- bond over all things ballet. So we're going to start how I like to start all interviews with just skim your resume. I started bollywood thirteen years old. It was not something that I had thought possible or knew anything about a my stumbled into it was discovered at my boys and Girls Club, the local community center across the street from public. School in San Pedro California, it was there that my valley teacher taught me my first class on a basketball court and she told me I was a prodigy after an hour of working with her she ended up inviting me to train with her in her studio on full scholarship and I ended up moving. In with her and her family to be able to train lean tensely for the next three years I trained for another year and a half at a different studio. By the time, I was seventeen about four years of training. I was living in New York City dancing professionally for American Ballet Theatre I went on to dance as a quarter ballet member for seven years I was the only black woman in American ballet theatre for the first decade of my career I then went on to become the third black female soloist in their history. In in two thousand, fifteen I became the first ever black principal Ballerina. Ballet, theater now, in their eighty year history found a lot of incredible opportunities along the way amazing opportunities for endorsement deals things that you don't typically see ballet dancer getting the opportunity to do estee lauder in Saco in. Getting the chance to perform with Prince and Taylor. Swift. I've had a very diverse career adding author to it. Extremely excited that I have the opportunity to. Children's books along with other genres but I'm really excited about this upcoming book on heads. I just got the book and it's fantastic. So I'm very excited to give it to people as gifts. Obviously you've lived in the public eye now for many years and you have a lot of fans especially, it's Kim H. Q.. What is something that your fans don't know about you something we can. Google. Recipe Ah. So this is proof of this. I'm I'm probably one of the clumsy as people we recently moved into. Will me my husband bought a home and amazing designer newly renovated everything and yesterday I was enjoying my Sunday with spicy crab kind of jump Eliah and I tripped over the carpet in spilled the whole thing on our Blue Velvet Sofa and how did you have an emergency let cleaner come in and clean like deep clean. The entire thing I am very surprised you. I would. Never Clumsy. How can you be a clumsy Ballerina I think there's something that happens when you're not on stage you're not in the studio where you're so focused. So much of the time on I mean naturally I'm coordinated but I'm there's just so much focus on my body that when I'm not having to do it I feel like I just completely let go I. Think the title of Your next book should be the Clumsy Ballerina just putting that out there. Yes. Next Children's book. I WanNa talk about your childhood. This career podcast, we talked to you so many amazing female leaders at the top of their respective names and obviously so much who each of us are because of how we grew up and the mark that are our parents family structure leave on us, and that informs how we can go out into the world top. Tell us a little bit just about your childhood and what it was like growing up. Yeah I mean absolutely shaped informed how I saw the world and approached everything that I did I was born in Kansas City Missouri, which a lot of people don't really know that I was two years old when my mom left my father and took her four kids on a bus. We drove from Kansas City Missouri to southern California where that was kind of the start of my life That's pretty much in my memory. All I remember is California growing up we moved a lot my mother married two more times had to march children my. Life which is constantly in motion and it was constant. There just wasn't a lot of security and so I think that it made me into the extremely introverted girl that I was I was embarrassed about the way that we lived We didn't have a home a struggled to put food on the table. I'm mother ultimately ended up raising six children on her own, and there was just a lot of hiding things. I wanted in no way to stand out which is pretty crazy. I ended up in a field where I'm out there exposed in performing for. So many but but it was on my terms and so when I could, when I could be a part of something where I could share my voice and my experiences without speaking, it was exactly like what the doctor ordered. It was just what I what I needed as a young person in I didn't have arts in my life until I was thirteen and so it was really difficult for me to survive by the time I started dancing. We were living in a motel just constantly moving from different places whatever we could afford I think that had. I not experienced. You know just no stability a lot of abuse There were so many things that I just felt like I learned to be a survivor and I was just constantly in survival mode. So stepping into the world of ballet, it was like peace and balance and security and consistency, and it was the opposite of what my world was in. So I think that's one of the reasons I was so drawn to it as well as you know I, think a lot of people look at the ballet world and they think you know it's Mean, it is difficult to thrive and to be successful in. All the hardships I felt like if I can get through all I have in my thirteen years with the life I've been living I can get through anything so I felt like I was so prepared not only as a young person to be in in the ballet world, but also as a black woman that was probably the one thing that I really felt secure in my identity was the fact that I mother raised me with the understanding that as soon as I leave the house every morning I'm a black girl in that so I'm going to be viewed and treated in. So there was no a lack of understanding in that area. Of My identity and so I think that really served me well when I entered the very white valet worlds.

Trump and Biden's Diverging Visions for American Foreign Policy

"In our ongoing election coverage were taking a deep look at how president trump and democratic. Presidential nominee Joe Biden differ on major policy issues. Today, we're going examine foreign affairs mark. Stewart spoke with the journals national, security reporter Warren Strobel. A lot of attention in recent days to the Middle East obviously president trump is touting success with peace accords with Israel. Let's talk about the trump approach versus the biden approach. Yeah I mean in the waning weeks of the campaign here Mr Trump has secured really historic agreements from the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain to make peace with Israel and recognize it diplomatically big achievement. No. Matter how you count it. I think most people would agree but there are fundamental differences between the Republican Democratic candidates particularly when it comes to Saudi Arabia Mr Biden has said that he would review relations with Saudi Arabia, which is probably the most important US ally in the Middle East that he would consider stopping arms sales he's been very critical of their killing of the journalist dissident. Jamal Kashogi Mr Trump on the other hand has declined to put pressure on Saudi Arabia. Really. In any significant way he sort of dismissed defining by the CIA that Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman probably ordered the killing of Mr. Kashogi and he has vetoed congressional moves to limit arms sales to Riyadh. Saudi Arabia obviously issues in the Middle East but also Iran. Let's talk about the different approaches there. Yeah. Here again, that's quite a stark difference Mr Trump. Two thousand seventeen withdrew from the Iran nuclear accord known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action on. He has launched a campaign of maximum pressure designed to limit Iran's ability to cause trouble in the region and try to force it back into talks. He's also by the way in recent days Mr Trump has said get reelected around will come to the table and we can make a deal real quickly. Mr Biden has said he would go back into the nuclear agreement. He would get the United States back into that agreement if Iran also returns to compliance. So again, Joe Biden is tough on Iran but he is much more. I think looking at diplomatic track to try and halt their nuclear program. Another region of interest is certainly Europe. Obviously there are economic issues, their political as well as military issues. When we look at Europe, how big of a role does the relationship with NATO play in this discussion? You know I think it plays a significant role. NATO's the probably the most important and one of the longest standing alliances that the United States has. Important economically in terms of the trade between the United States and Europe, and important strategically given its role in sort of countering Russia Russia intervention in places like Ukraine Belarus. Again there's differences here though Mr Trump has been pretty critical of NATO. He demanded that all the countries live up to. A promise they made to spend two percent of their GDP. Self. Defense, and there have been rumors that he might withdraw from NATO entirely or want to. This is Chris from Mr Biden who again stressing the importance of good alliances with Europe and other parts of the world. You. Briefly mentioned Russia, where are the distinctions in viewpoint and policy between the two candidates? That's a good question. I think the trump administration has been in terms of my reporting and analysis sort of a weird bee's when it comes to Russia Mr Trump himself. No has been quite friendly with and trying to strike a good relationship with Vladimir Putin, but the people in the middle and. Upper levels of US government agencies are taking much more dim view, Mr Putin, and actually you know the US has done a lot of sanctions and other actions against Putin during Mr Trump's terms. So there's sort of a kind of a bipolar aspect to his administration's dealings with Russia Mr. Biden. I think has been more critical. Putin personally and has said he would stand up to Mr Putin on things such as election interference the Russian incursion into Ukraine and other things like that.

Are We Being Forced to Buy Stocks

"Last week in the insiders guide email newsletter I pointed out the expensive valuation of US stocks. Specifically I showed that the forward price to earnings ratio the P. E. based on earnings estimates over the next year was twenty, two point nine. That's three standard deviations above its average of sixteen times going back to two thousand, three at data from Ned Davis. Research. In reply to that email, Andrew wrote regarding stocks being expensive on a forward e true but there's no alternative. What do you do with bond yields near Zero and the vanguard total stock market? Index. Fund. Yielding two percent. By VPI, the vanguard total stock market ETF. JASA forwarded to me a paper by Bridgewater says, which I'll discuss in more detail later in this episode. I had a similar question from a plus member in the money for the rest of US plus member forums. He wrote. So the Fed signals that it wants to keep rates low for three more years. Canada's pension. Fund is reevaluating bond-holdings and you've got an army of small and large investors bidding up companies like Tesla and snowflake to absurdly hype. All this combined to make me think are we as individual investors now forced to buy equities? Is this the mother of all bubbles in which there's literally no other things suitable for purchase. There is a lot of speculation in stocks right now. Jim. Bianco Bianca Research pointed out that small traders are dominating the options market. Bear most of the trades right now and seventy five percent of that volume is an option contracts expire in two weeks. So short term bets. Look at South Korea and article from Bloomberg pointed out that day traders in South Korea have accounted for eighty seven and a half percent of the total value of stocks traded in the first part of September. You. Some men chief strategist at Samsung Securities said retail investors appear to be seeking short-term profits after hearing their next door neighbors earned lots of money from stocks after the March selloff. Receiving a similar situation in India. The Financial Times reports that the number of individual investor accounts rose twenty percent from the start of the year, the twenty, four million, and they point out that around the world, an influx of investors are investing in stocks for the first time. Are. We in a bubble? Is it a speculative frenzy? Are we forced to buy these stocks because there are no alternatives with also? One of the things I like to do investing is think about what's different this time what's unusual? What what doesn't fit the pattern? I had two instances of investing this past week where something didn't fit the pattern Lebron, I were driving up in the mountains of Montana and a small bear cub really bolted right in front of us no idea what it was running from. My son suggested he was running from the year twenty twenty. And then few days later at our front door, there were seven cows drinking water from the driveway eating our bushes. There are no cows around us. We live in an area that nobody keeps cows but there they were right in front of my house. Turns out. They had strayed from the National Forest, which is not very far some outfitters have grazing rights and drop off the cows and leave them there all summer pick them up come late October, and they had straight down because some of that newly cut barley fields, but it didn't fit the pattern. Cows at your front door. Don't fit the pattern. What's different now on investing front that could justify more expensive valuations for stocks. Well, for the first time, ever US interest rates are near zero from short term out to ten years. This is known as a flat yield curve, which is an unusual. We've had flat yield curves in the past. But it's flat near zero. There was a flat yield curve where ten treasury bonds and cash for yielding similar back from two thousand and five to two thousand seven. But yielding four percent. And from two thousand to two, thousand, two cash and tenure treasures were yielding five to six percent. Today, the ten year Treasury yield is zero point, six percent and cash is zero. The Federal Reserve intense to keep it that way. The recent policy statement suggests that they will keep their policy rate. What's known as the Fed funds rate near zero until labor market conditions have improved. The. Unemployment rate has dropped close to to to maximum employment and that inflation has risen to two percent is on track to moderately exceed two percent. They included their economic and rate projections and all, but four officials on the committee. Expect the Fed funds rate is still be near zero at the end of twenty, twenty three. Rates are low across the board. It is a different investment environment than we have ever faced before. And that's what this paper by bridgewater associates was about. It was titled Grappling With the New Reality of zero bond yields virtually everywhere. It was written by Bob Prince Greg Jensen Melissa fear, and Jim Haskell. I. Discussed Bridgewater Associates Founder Ray dallies views back in episode three, hundred changing world order in this paper bills off that. Before we continue let me pause and share some words from one of this week sponsors masterworks. I've shared on the show how low interest rates are on bonds and yields and cash about zero money has to be invested somewhere in preserving your wealth is as hard as it's ever been. That's where masterworks comes in. If you're looking to diversify out of the traditional public markets, then take a look at masterworks. They make blue chip art investing possible works by artists like Banksie, 'cause and Warhol. Art is a one point seven trillion dollar asset class that has performed better than s five hundred by one hundred and eighty percent between two thousand and two thousand eighteen according to Citibank.

"Prince dislike. He could make the band. Okay now. Play Dead Okay Rollover okay so it was one of those kind of songs where do like crazy like corn punch gags like we were like circus dogs and he will make us too blue jump through the hoop okay go. Prince wasn't just thinking about perfecting his own set he was also closely monitoring the opening sets by his two proteges. The time actually played during both of those opening sets as Drummer Jelly. Bean Johnson told me I was doing double duty because the time was managed six band and concert so that was a chipper I to we'd be behind a curtain. Nobody knew it was I tell you a funny thing about that when we first started doing it. Disguises rarely Jimmy was like in a a preacher's Robe I had on like sunglasses and a beret and and Jesse had on a beard. So that we we did that. The first few gigs for Prince finally figured no I put these guys minds fishnet curtain and we will be behind bandaged. Six would be in front of it. In addition to watching from the wings as the time in vanity six played prince would sometimes jump in and add instrumentation himself from behind the curtain so fennell but the band would now. I love that because it would be so nasty. When he would come out and he'd be back there playing with us you know he being the band with us and him Jesse the to get tires would be just killing? Like I'd be just had his big grin on my face unplanned because it just so funky nasty you know and people have no idea what's going on back in the advantage. They see in a curtain and these three girls you know. And that's all they're seeing NATO us and we just went at it back there so so it was a lot of fun. I enjoyed that part of it was just some tanks. Incredible to me about you know that he had so much music in him that even though he had his own full set coming up he just couldn't help open south. I've watched him sometime. He'd be on stage. He just be making faces at me and so I knew it was on the amount of time. He's going grabs guitar. have one in Tex- bringing guitar and he started playing with us. He didn't do it all the time but he did a lot. There was a fierce rivalry between Prince and the time that extended back to the musicians beginnings playing lying battle of the bands showcases against each other in North Minneapolis but his prince's keyboard player. Lisa Coleman remembers there was a sense of camaraderie to we would go to truck stops in the middle of the country. You know where there's nothing and then out would walk just a Mexican the time the revolution Vanity six. I'll walking into a truck stop in middle America wanting to Friday sandwich and these truck the Jewish. What the Hell is this? And I'm so glad we all have that time together because it was it was a trip of thread red. We were feeling so strong. And you know. Just young and cocky..

"This is a live recording of prince and his band performing do me baby in Detroit. On November Thirtieth Nineteen eighty-two it was their fifth of six shows in Detroit on the nineteen ninety nine tour a recording of this entire performance is included in the expanded editions of the Nineteen Ninety Nine reissue arm with a DVD of another full set in Houston and as vault archivist. Michael How told me special care was taken to make sure. These recordings sounded as true as possible to the real experience of attending the nineteen ninety. Nine tour the live thing is of particular Consequence to me because prince was such a compelling you know sort of a peerless live live performer that we thought it essential to include audio and video of the tour And they are a decent amount of board mixes fixes a pretty good quality. That have circulated escaped into the collectors marketplace including at least one of the Detroit shows there. Were six five or six. Detroit shows On the tour two per day for three days in the early version on the first day has circulated which is aboard Max but the second the midnight it show which is the one that we decided to release on. The box. Set had never circulated before and we had multi track recordings for it so it sort of check two boxes. We wanted to present. Can't you know something. Obviously that had never emerged and wanted to present it in the most complete way and with the most integrity possible so we took it right from the two inch schmaltz track masters and we had David Z.. Mix It who is very much. In Prince's orbit at the time was the venue and captured the audio and remembers how the room sounded and the general spirit of the of the performance and mixed it as if we were standing there and you know November of nineteen eighty two. It's a pretty great unsurprisingly. A pretty great performance in Detroit Troy historically had been and was for the rest of Princess career particularly a few sieve audience for him. I think he really was able to shine. And there's a lot of love coming from the stage back to it. I think you can hear a recording..

"I'm an author and a radio. Host living in Minneapolis previously on Prince. The story of nineteen ninety nine. We spent a lot of time talking about Prince in the studio but what I WanNa do now as talk about prince the live performer. If you have ever had a chance to see prince perform live whether in person or maybe with that incredible super bowl halftime show or his his guitar Solo at the Rock and Roll Hall of fame. You know he was an unparalleled performer. And my mind. Just call of these moments that I got to have watching him play at venues here in Minneapolis and especially out at Paisley Park. There was one night in actually somewhat recent years it was back in Twenty fifteen eighteen when prince actually invited Madonna out to Paisley Park to see him perform. And I got the chance to see Madonna watching prints. She was seated on the edge edge of the stage looking up at him as he played. This just monstrous Guitar Solo and her mouth was literally hanging open in awe. And I just had at this moment where I thought if even Madonna who has seen so much in her career and done so much in her career is just mesmerized an awestruck at prince that is a powerful powerful performer. So we're going to get into that because so far we've been talking about some of the early moments that tested Prince's resolve Paul and that propelled him to take work to the next level. And now we're going to ride alongside prince and his band as they hit the road on the historic nineteen ninety nine tour which is referred to amongst fans as the triple threat tour between the fall of nineteen eighty two in the spring of nineteen eighty-three prints vanity. Six and the the time would perform over ninety shows crisscrossing the United States and by the end of it prince was a household name. Oh my gosh. That tour was fun. Fun Fun Fun. That's Brenda Bennett. A vanity six. The nineteen ninety nine tour kicked off on November eleventh nineteen eighty the two and leading up to that all three projects on the lineup put out new albums and prince tapped his openers. To stir up excitement prince wasn't doing any kind kind of interviews now a promotional stuff for his music at the time and we were out doing promo tour's doing videos doing photo sessions sessions television appearances. We are not only promoting ourselves but we were promoting the boss as well. We did some of it with the guys from time. So we're out there for Prince Promoting the music and trying to generate the excitement for the nineteen ninety nine tour. They couldn't wait to see prince and Vanity six and the time.

I'm an author and a host at the current and this is the third of four installments of our deep dive into the making of Prince's Nineteen nineteen ninety nine and the new super deluxe reissue of the album which includes thirty five never before released recordings from his vault. Like this one. It's called don't let fool Ya and prince recorded alone at his home studio in Chan hasn't Minnesota in the spring of nineteen eighty two. You had a chance to talk to a lot of people who knew prince in the early eighties as he is developing one thousand nine hundred ninety nine and one theme that's emerging that he loved watching movies. This is something that has been true about prince for his entire life in his memoir. He revealed that he had a transformative experiencing woodstock in the movie theater with his father and later in life. You Rent Chan hasn't cinema for late night viewings with his friends. I actually got a chance to see a movie with Prince there. Once it was after a show at Paisley Park. He rented out the theater and a few dozen of us. Watch the James Bond movie spectre with him. Sitting in the back row a handful of movies from this pivotal early eighties period clearly had a direct influence on his artistic output they included the droning dark eraserhead head which he watched on a loop at Chan House and Quadrophenia which jump started his fascination with trenchcoats and planted the seed for the creation of his own rock films films. Another movie prince watched repeatedly when it was released in nineteen eighty was the idol maker a more obscure and long out of print film about a visionary visionary yet controlling manager who molds the careers of to unsuspecting young teen idols. That's dickerson is one of the people who remembers watching that that movie with Prince. It's well known at this point in time that he loved the movie The idol maker. Can I think that was just an idea that hit him and stuck and he wanted to do like the updated version of that when he had an idea he wouldn't let go until he did it in Prince's imagination his new spin golly manager role even came with its own name Jamie Starr the first of a long line of pseudonyms that he used while working with other artists and prince didn't just stop coming up with a new name he and everyone he worked with started insisting that Jamie Starr was a real person he even staged a photograph of this new over the top. Yeah producer with Prince himself wearing dark sunglasses sticking out his tongue and counting a stack of cash alongside one of his proteges. Morris Day. We all thought it was hilarious. Larry that people thought the Jamie Starr was like a person because the Jamie Starr was more a composite prince primarily. But then you had Morris's inputting and I had a little bit of involvement and there were a bunch of people had limited involvement so at the end of the day and Jamie Starr was creation of of people's imaginations Agean nations. They believe will leave. Thank you for Flying Morris International. Don't touch.

I I started with prince in the very beginning and became the drummer for the revolution. Could you describe the Lake Riley hus- It wasn't purple and it was just Brown and front door came in from window to the side of the door. He'd sometimes he'd peak out if you see you coming but then you go down and then take a left and that was kind of A control room smaller than studio a Paisley. But what Jason Too. That was kind of a small live room but he had to trump kitchen and bath. Where Mark Brown actually auditioned in that little live room and It really prove to be exactly what he needed. which was A A good board good speakers don bats was was still at the helm and he was a super technician. He trusted me a lot because during that time I also took a lot of photographs. We used to play around and do fogo sessions and this is when he first started wearing the trench coat so like it was little house of Creation Shen and then he'd be like at least come punch me in my playing the drums or something like punch me in. "So we're out in Chan Hessen right now I come out to. Chan has a lot to go to Peasley Park. But we're at at a place that prince had before Paisley Park before he'd even really done anything of this magnitude of purple rain before he even claimed. AM The color purple so this property has been known in the Fan community as the Purple House but back in the fall of eighty one it was actually brown. It was is boring kind of split level. Beige Brown House on a cul de sac in the suburbs of the twin cities. It was the first house that prince ever owned and which was a huge deal for him at that point you know. He's in his early twenties and it was one of his first real home studios where he could just whole up and work work on whatever was going through his mind at that time and the reason I wanted to come here is because it's always been so odd to me to think about all L.. If these futuristic sounds on nine hundred ninety nine and Little Red Corvette all these signs that he made at this place it sounds like a city. They're so busy they're so full of Ali synthesizers and and explosions and politics and all these social elements but he made them at a place that is on the surface like boring. It's quiet there's a lot going on around here but as standing here now I realize that's probably exactly actually why he loved it here. You know thinking about the era of his life and especially the horrible experience yet opening for the rolling stones and all this is pressure that he was under an expectations that he had for himself he was really important for him to be able to come someplace that was safe and quiet and chill where he could just be alone or have friends over and really just kind of be alone with his thoughts and along with his music. I've heard all these stories from in his friends about they would hang out here. Watch all these movies. He was a huge film buff. They arrive from the automaker blade runner or a racer sir head which is even standing here. Looking at the lake just says so much like watching a razor head in the suburbs it makes sense how nineteen ninety nine could come out of that but it was a place for him that I think felt really really safe and standing here now and flicking. There's a couple of geese flying over the lake but otherwise it's pretty silent. I get it I get why this was significant for him. He needed this place.

"Hi Everybody This is Matt Fink Aka Dr Phil From Princeton. The revolution just having in the opportunity to open for the stones being youngsters from the Midwest who looked up to all those guys was really a dream come true fantasy fulfilled as you might think there was a huge stairway down on the red carpet back to the stones village in walked down at all excited title. You see these pictures. Were all excited to play. It's a big moment. Banned from Minneapolis. Right growing up Saint Louis Park South and North Minneapolis. I mean it's huge huge huge moment and You know an ends an utter shambles. Defeat what was interesting as I thought that the rolling stones had more of a sixties counterculture kind of audience. That would be more peaceful than this so I was a bit bit surprised by that so it kind of took on that hells angels edge since they they allowed the hells angels to still be there security force and even at that time so you had a mixed race group of people up there mixed gender Prince was dressed in his trench coat and his thigh high stockings and high heeled boots. And you know the just looking radical compared to what they're used to although Mick Jagger used to come out sounds Kinda sexy clothing at times but he was white. Yeah so you had you had the three black front guys and the anyway you get it so yeah it was disappointing. That first show was Friday. October ninth nineteen eighty one. There were four bands on the bill so princeton his band took took the stage at about two PM ahead of George thorogood the Jay guile span and the stones. The Friday show actually. Wasn't that bad in the first two songs I I can still hear that sound that sound that many people it was like amazing. A band launched into a guitar scorcher Bambi and followed it up with a hard driving rock version. Asian of when you were mine clearly altering their settlers to try to appeal the stones fans but when they were midway through their third song. Jack you off. The crowd route started to turn.

"And the earliest tracks in the Super Deluxe edition of Nineteen Ninety. Nine were recorded in November of nineteen eighty. One I'm not gonNA listen to some of those in just a few moments points but before we get there. I think it's important to understand. Exactly where Princess head was that when he was recording. These unreleased sketches of songs. And they'll it's impossible to know what prince himself itself was thinking and feeling and I would never claim to know these things at this exact moment in history in the fall of Nineteen eighty-one. They actually weren't going that great. Great the story of Nineteen Ninety nine begins with one of the most legendary concert debacles in rock and roll history when Prince and his band got the chance to open for the rolling stones at the Los Angeles Coliseum as Prince. His bandmates have told me opening up for the stones was going to be Prince's biggest gig to date and it was supposed to have been the opportunity of a lifetime here's Prince's first guitar player Dez Dickerson. That time you know we were playing what folks then call the Shetland circuits. So we're playing Rina's but you know we're playing to like stone. Solid African American audiences princess still relatively new to touring ringing eighty-one. He'd only done a couple of short tours including one opening for Rick James and his album dirty mind was getting a lot of buzz in the music world.
