"Support for this podcast and the following message is brought to you by the American Express business platinum card. Got the card that's built for business. By American Express Hong Kong says hamsters may have infected a pet shop worker with COVID-19. Now they all must die by Chad de Guzman. Authorities in Hong Kong have ordered the deaths of some 2000 hamsters, and other small rodent pets after health officials said they may be responsible for infecting a pet shop worker with COVID-19. 11 samples from hamsters at the little boss pet shop in the Chinese territory have tested positive for the delta variant of COVID-19 officials suspicion fell on the tiny creatures after a 23 year old worker at the pet shop tested positive for COVID-19, while authorities agreed Tuesday there was no evidence to date that pets can transmit the SARS CoV-2 virus to humans. Customers who went to the store after January 7th will be subjected to quarantine. Pet owners who bought hamsters beginning December 22nd, were advised to turn their pets over to authorities to be tested for the virus. If the animals test positive, the onerous will have to undergo quarantine, regardless of the test result, the hamster will be put down. All stores selling hamsters were also ordered to cease operations. However, Hong Kong's South China morning post newspaper quoted an unnamed source as saying that health authorities believe it's very likely that the transmission this time is from animals to humans. Genome sequencing of the virus found in the animals imported from the Netherlands shows it is the same as the virus present in the pet shop worker. We don't want to call all the animals, conservation official, Thomas sit, told reporters. But we need to protect public health and animal health. We have no choice. We have to make a firm decision. It's the latest dramatic measure Hong Kong officials have taken as part of the city's zero COVID approach. After a cluster of fewer than 100 infections of the omicron variant broke out in the city of 7 and a half million, officials imposed 2020 style social distancing restrictions, including closing bars and gems and ordering restaurants to stop dine in service at 6 p.m.. All flights from 8 countries, including the U.S. and UK have been banned, and officials have barred air passengers from 150 countries from traveling through Hong Kong once a global transit hub. Anyone who tests positive for COVID-19 is admitted to the hospital and their close contacts are tracked down and committed to a government facility for 14 days of quarantine. More than 3000 people, including international travelers are currently being held, most at the pennies bay quarantine center near Hong Kong Disneyland. The policy which has seen the city record fewer than 13,000 cases and 213 COVID-19 deaths, mirrors similar vigilance by Mainland China, which has worked to stamp out all traces of infection at any cost. Hong Kong is hoping that Beijing will allow a resumption of quarantine free travel between the city and the mainland, which is critical to many businesses and families in Hong Kong. It's not the first time Hong Kong linked a human's COVID-19 infection to a pet. At the onset of the pandemic in 2020, a 17 year old pomeranian tested positive for the virus. But in that case, health authorities confirmed the dog contracted the infection from its owner. Some of the cities residents took to Twitter to question the mass destruction of the hamsters, including the government's promise to deal with them humanely. The virus behind COVID-19 is thought to have jumped from an animal to a human, but animal two human transmission of COVID-19 disease has yet to be scientifically substantiated. Authorities advised city residents not to abandon their pets on the streets, and instead call conservation officials to handle the hamsters or bring them directly to their offices. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says dogs, cats, and other animals can be infected with COVID-19, but the risk of animal to human transmission.

"Good evening Hey Jimmy How are you Fine thank you Good Hey the question for you They're just announced to the earlier today that I guess they released 5 million free test kits COVID home test kits Well number one what do you think the obsession with testing is and number two a couple of weeks ago I had a cold And I didn't run out and get tested So by today's standards I was probably being careless or reckless or stupid but if it were two years ago that would have been perfectly normal protocol I mean what do you think of all this madness Well if I'm showing symptoms of COVID I would be willing to test I mean the symptoms between COVID and a common cold are not necessarily the same thing if you examine them there are differences but I feel no obsession to test just because I suddenly have a respiratory problem or get the sniffles or something Our differences there And if everybody in the country who felt a cold coming on in the wintertime got tested for COVID you would run out of test pretty quickly so I don't really understand it either David but if I if I had the COVID symptoms as opposed to the cold symptoms that I would absolutely get tested Damon and Pittsfield Massachusetts now good evening Hello Jim Yes sir you're on the radio go right ahead Yes I have a plan out There are 15 countries that mine coal in 15 other countries purchased call Mike wants to know there are a lot more countries than that mine had purchased it anyway whatever go ahead Stop the party of coal Well I'll put it this way Cole has tended to be one of the dirtier fossil fuels although scrubbing and other technologies have made it a heck of a lot cleaner but there aren't that many circumstances that were coal could not be replaced by a cleaner fossil fuel if it became necessary so to do But coal has had a place and I would point out that the coal that has burned today is through various technologies a lot cleaner than the coal that was burned in the not too distant past So for what it's worth we've made some progress on that particular front Among the other issues that are pressing in on us at this particular time the World Health Organization says it is possible to get out from under the COVID pandemic and hears Jim roop The WHO's director of emergency programs doctor Mike Ryan says yes it is possible We can downgrade to an endemic We can end the public health emergency if we end the hospitalizations which we end the debt And if we reduce transmission through a minimum level He says the only way that can be accomplished is through vaccines Here's the problem though This is a pandemic worldwide And vaccine distribution has not been as equitable as world health officials would like There are 85% of people on the African continent haven't received a single dose of vaccine yet Vulnerable are not vulnerable So there are literally millions of people living in low income countries who are highly vulnerable who haven't received a single dose of vaccine Now surely we can do both Surely we can achieve both objectives There is a tendency to think of the pandemic only in terms of this country As long as there is travel to and from other places though where vaccines are not available he says the virus will continue to spread mutate and stay one step ahead of us Because at the end of the day this virus will continue to transmit This virus will be around for a very long time He says it still will be a threat to the world even when it's shifted from being a pandemic virus to one of an endemic virus He also compared COVID to other endemic diseases like malaria and HIV saying endemic isn't a good thing rather it just means here forever I'm Jim rope And by the way if you haven't already you can now order a free COVID test online the website's official launch is this coming day Wednesday the 19th but it went live Tuesday the 18th the day early to test the system and Kathy foster has this report The government website to order free at home COVID-19 tests is already up and running as hospitalizations remain at a pandemic high Every website launch in our view comes with risk We can't guarantee there won't be a bug or two White House press secretary Jen Psaki says the website COVID tests dot gov started operating on Tuesday One day ahead of his official rolled out Wednesday morning to check for any possible kinks in the system And right now it's in the beta phase Last month President Biden announced plans to roll out a half a billion COVID-19 rapid tests in the U.S. by mail as he faced criticism for long lines of testing sites at home testing kits were hard to find in pharmacies and retail stores The World Health Organization issued this update Tuesday on coronavirus cases at a news conference in Geneva The world last week there were more than 18 million reported cases And according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention the Alma cron variant now makes up almost all U.S. cases Johns Hopkins University reports an average of nearly 780,000 new COVID-19 cases per day at almost 1800 new deaths U.S. Surgeon General Vivek Murthy That's why we've had to take additional measures We have a billion tests that will become available to people that they can order through the website If you'd like to order your free tests all you have to do is go to COVID tests dot gov You'll only need to provide a.

CDC Changes Definition of Vaccine

"So here is from the Miami Herald. Why did the CBC change its definition of vaccine? Did you know that? Yeah. CDC is utterly corrupt utterly. There's no question that so it will be recorded historically. Social media is calling bluff on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. I can't believe this is in the Miami Herald to be honest. For modifying its definition of the words vaccine and vaccination on its website, before the change, the definition of vaccination read the act of introducing a vaccine into the body to produce immunity to a specific disease. Now the word immunity has been switched to protection. Get the switch. The term vaccine also got to make over the CDC's definition changed from a product that stimulates a person's immune system to produce immunity to a specific disease, which is why I read to you. From the Internet to the current, a preparation that is used to stimulate the body's immune response against diseases. Stimulate the body. So it doesn't confer immunity. They've changed it, as I said. When you get vaccinated against smallpox, is it too minimize the effects of smallpox? You get a little smallpox, a little measles, a little chickenpox, a little polio. That was at the toll to us? Or will we protect it from it? Were we better excuse me? Immune to it. As I said at the beginning, on The Crown may be a godsend. Maybe, I don't know. I never make or rarely make predictions, but it may be, it may be a godsend. Because it's for the vast majority of people that is not serious. And yet it will confer on them natural immunity. And yet, the lockdowns around the world are continuing.

"I don't know if you remember this, but one of the really early tells that this pandemic was going to turn into an economic problem was when Apple said back in January of 2022 years ago that was having a tough time getting shipments from China because of the factory shutdowns over there in response to the virus. A supply side shock is what that's called. We are, of course, having a demand shock in this economy right now is we all want. We all demand the goods we went without during the worst of the virus, right? But right now, there are tens of millions of people in China completely locked down or otherwise restricted as a spreads over there. That includes key manufacturing centers and key port cities as well. And that, as marketplaces, cerebellar explains means nothing good at all for the global supply chain. A Macron isn't China. What's happening in China right now is the most serious COVID-19 surge since the original outbreak in Wuhan. Sam scarpino is managing director of pathogen surveillance at the Rockefeller foundation's pandemic prevention institute. China has a zero COVID policy that has worked well so far, says nargis Ellie janiva, with the rhodium group. When there is an infection detected, there is a mass lockdown, which disrupts huge cities, massive population in effect factory production. That's happening now in several cities in areas. Brendan McKenna is an international economist at Wells Fargo securities. And it just so happens to be that the cities and provinces are major supplier of computer chips, technology products. There's a lot of ports that are being disrupted. China's options are complicated for a few reasons. The lunar new year and the Olympics are both coming up, making controlling a priority. And its population may be more vulnerable. Some evidence suggest the sinovac vaccine is less effective than others of producing antibodies that neutralize a Macron says Rockefeller scarpino. Taken together, he says it makes for a very complex situation. What makes it harder to predict is what kinds of measures are coming tomorrow to try and control the spread and how many people are going to be affected by those. The sense now is that there will be disruptions felt here delayed products thwarted deliveries continued inflation, but they may take a while to arrive. Again, Wells Fargo's Brendan McKenna. I think it's probably going to take at least a month possibly to for the disruptions and kind of the way China is handling the COVID outbreaks to actually show up in economic data and for financial markets actually respond to that. On the other hand, companies do have some experience at this point dealing with disruptions, Chad fleeger heads the supply chain practice at accounting and advisory firm BDO. This time around, I think being proactive and getting out in front of the problem will shorten the back end of how long it could last. Either way, though, this ultimately means.

CDC Cuts Isolation Time for Americans Who Test Positive From 10 Days to 5

"MSNBC's Nicole Wallace and cut number 7 reported on the fact that the center for disease control yesterday recommended that the isolation time and the quarantine time be reduced from ten days to 5 days cut. For the science believers, I have some breaking news that has happened been announced since we've been on the air. The CDC has officially shortened the isolation period for someone who tests positive for COVID. I want to get this right. If they test positive for COVID, but they're showing no symptoms. The isolation period can be shortened by half for people who contract the virus saying that those without symptoms could safely resume mixing with others just 5 days after their positive test results. The new guidance announced as the highly transmissible automotive variant is sending daily caseloads soaring, worsening a labor shortage and forcing airlines to cancel thousands of flights, doctor walensky saying this. In the last few minutes see, I'm a crime variant is spreading quickly and has the potential to impact all facets of our society, the new recommendations balance what we know about the spread of the virus and the protection provided by vaccination and booster doses. These updates ensure people can safely continue their daily lives. MSNBC yesterday, as she makes the announcement that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is cutting its recommended isolation time. Now, she's reading that statement. It gets a little confusing here. The agency yesterday said that the change applies to everyone regardless of vaccination status, and that after the 5 days is up, people should wear a mask around other people at all times for another 5 days. They use the term isolation and they use the term quarantine. If you read through the statement, it's confusing at times, which is which, and if there's even any difference, evidently, there is, though, additionally, the CDC said that it was shortening the recommendation or recommended quarantine to 5 days for people who are unvaccinated or vaccinated, but not boosted, but who have been

Why Isn't the Government Talking About Proven Alternative COVID Treatments?

"I was recently helping a family friend of mine and my wife's who got infected with the Fauci virus and was having a tough time with it. Now, we've never had the position. That this virus should not be taken seriously. And said, we've had a mature position that if you're younger, you should have a completely different perspective on how to handle the virus and how to navigate it. In fact, we've always been hawkish on early treatments, intervention, proper diagnosis, we've been skeptical on masks obviously in vaccines in a false promises associated with them. And so we helped this individual by giving them information. So they called me and they said, look, Charlie, you talk about this stuff a lot. My doctor says there's basically nothing I could do. So I got really interested, so I went to the NIH website. This is what your government's website says on how to treat the Chinese coronavirus. This is a legitimate quote from the NIH website. If a patient is not vaccinated, they should be counseled about wearing a face covering and getting vaccinated against the SARS CoV-2 infection. Wait, what? Wait, so if you're not vaccinated, the treatment is to get vaccinated and to get a face covering. You read on the NIH, if you type in, it's a super interesting. COVID-19 treatment. Not prevention, not prophylactic, COVID-19 treatment. There's almost no literature on the NIH website of how to actually treat COVID-19 from home. You have to dig deep into what's called unverified NIH journals that are submitted to go even find any sort of inkling or a rumbling around vitamin D, which we know has a direct correlation with COVID

Lawsuits over workplace vaccine rule focus on states' rights

"Officials in at least half of the states in the U. S. have filed court challenges against president Biden's workplace vaccine mandate for companies with more than one hundred employees the new OSHA requirement will take effect January fourth Missouri's Attorney General calls it unconstitutional unlawful and on wives but president Biden says mandates are prompting people to get their covert shops already received organizations that have adopted vaccination requirements increased vaccination rates by more than twenty percentage points he says prevention is the key to stopping the pandemic and bolstering the economy we need to prevent infections not way to treat them once they happen the administration is expressing confidence the work place vaccine or test requirement will withstand legal challenges because federal safety rules preempt state laws Jackie Quinn Washington

"The responses that that's not correct right right. I suicide is one of the most preventable causes of death because it relates so strongly to people's connections and relationships and just being able to access resources that are out there. There's different organizations. There's different ways that people can access help through either directly talking with somebody or calling texting going online but the the step of needing to connect with somebody is really the most difficult step which is where qpr and other suicide prevention curriculums. Really step in to say okay. We're going to take that step. We're going to be the to start that conversation. You don't have to worry about that because we care enough and we want you to live. So i'm going to start that conversation. We're going to break down that barrier absolutely and then move forward okay and that that really fits right into my next question which was if folks are interested in more information about qpr and suicide prevention awareness. We're gonna go Qpr itself is through the qpr institute you can find them online at qbr institute dot org Anybody hear kids piece in our training department can speak to qpr. We currently have four trainers. That are teaching the gatekeeper training. So reaching out kidspeace would be another way to access information about qpr At in terms of suicide prevention. There's a number of different agencies that are out there and organizations that really promote suicide prevention. The american foundation for suicide prevention is one and we also have the suicide prevention resource centers. That run the very well known lifeline. Though one eight hundred two seven three talk or eight to five five which is twenty four hours a day where people can reach out for assistance. There's also the crisis text line that people can reach out to they just text seven four one seven four one and pick a keyword. It could be helped. it could be home. It really doesn't matter but it starts that conversation and eric kits piece. we also offer team central dot com and oftentimes. We do have kids. That are writing in stories that are related to hopelessness suicidal thinking sometimes suicidal plans. So that's another resource. That's that's out there and available. I figure it's really interesting. You and i have had conversations about what we see on. Tv central and So many times. It's presented as i don't see any way out i don't want to but i don't see any way out we're able to say there is a way out we can help them at absolutely You know that we ask each of our guests for a life hack as we complete our interview. So what's your life act force today. So my life hack. I wanted to connect with the idea of suicide prevention. And so i'm going to borrow a quote from brennan brown. Who has done. Extensive research on shame and vulnerability which are such key factors for suicidality. Choose a wonderful quote about connection and that's one of the most powerful things when you're talking about suicide prevention. So she says. I define connection as the energy that exists between people when they feel seen heard valued when they can give and receive without judgment and when they derive sustenance and strength from the relationship. I have oddly enough. I happen to hear an interview with her. And she said something so meaningful she said we are meant to be connected. Yes we are. This is what we are as human beings so the more that we can connect the better we the better we're going to be in overweigh certainly specifically and what we've been talking about just ever seen is a licensed professional counselor with a master's degree in clinical and counseling psychology and. "Of thirty. One thousand podcast. Thanks so much for joining us today. Lots happening I shouldn't happen. Lots being talked about elliott and will stick with a couple of canadian teams. Here right now and we'll We'll start with the maple leafs. I'm of the mind that this is probably going to be a six times six deal. What's happening with zach hyman right now. Well he's got the permission to talk to all these other teams right and you know what i think happened again. Nobody direct like none of the direct sources will talk about it. But the best i can piece together is like i think toronto wanted to keep them and i think he wanted to stay. I agree with you. I think there's a six times six or maybe seven times six out there potentially for him. We'll see where this goes. I think what toronto tried to do. And this is kind of gas and educated. Guess was they tried to. Max hermit to bring down the av And i just think it's too far from where highlands potentially going to go here. You know. I think it's like a lot of players i think there's a willingness to leave something on the table. I i just think the gap was too big of what potentially is out there. What they suspect is out there. And what toronto could do so. Even though i think toronto tried to mac term it. I just i don't think they were. They were able to get close. See that surprises me. The idea the toronto would would max term this thing and again i understand this is this is your educated speculation but you know we just mentioned the avalanche and being an analytics driven organization and so is toronto and the same aging curves that exists in colorado exist in toronto with the maple leafs as well. And here's a player. Who plays an aggressive rough brand of hockey which can to injuries. And he's twenty nine years old and that type of commitment on term to a player where you know. The history of these types of players aren't flattering for those types of contracts. I don't disagree with you. Jeff but i think what that may have shown was just how much toronto felt about this particular player. And the other thing you can always do is try to make it so that you know it's easier by audible at the end of the deal ever. I guess it just showed. How much toronto thought about hyman that. They really tried to find a way and i just unfortunately don't think it ever got close. You know the The other speculation that edmonson. There's a number of teams would be interested. Edmonson was one of the first ones that popped up and my first thought. Was you know what type of good did zach. Hyman do in her previous life to be able to play with austin matthews and maybe connor mcdavid early andrei cycle in this life. Do we know if there is still interest from edmonton edmonton's one of the teams in there. You know. I know there were some reports in vancouver. That knocks are there too. I just like to talk about the quick sec number one. I do think the contracts are looking for that kind of player. I think they have some interest in in in jaden schwartz. I don't think they're the only ones you know. There's going to be a few other teams looking at schwartz. Like i wonder. For example of landis gog leaves if colorado goes there maybe. La goes there. He goes back to saint. Louis i mean those are all possibilities for him but the other thing about vancouver i i wanted to mention wherever some brock besser rumblings. Yeah on thursday. This is what i think was going on with brock besser. I do think his name came up. But i don't think it's because vancouver's got him on the market. I really think that it was vancouver. Going after something they really wanted or needed and besser name came up as the price that it was going to cost them. And i really believe that if besser was getting move this year it was purely because of a deal where vancouver got something and we would say. Okay now we kind of understand why this happened. I don't think his name is being thrown out there. I think it was specific to a certain kind of trade. So i don't think it's a general besser available. Let me stick with vancouver here for one second. What's going to happen with nate schmidt here. I think they're going to to trade him. They are trying to move him. I think everybody knows. I hope said. There's no nate schmidt's situation. And i guess it's all semantics. Maybe there is no situation. But i think there's an understanding that You know he'd like to play elsewhere. And i think they're going to try to accommodate them but they could have a lot of holes on their blue line. They're they're trying to sign. Adler i don't know how deeply they've gone with hammock yet. There is a chance he comes back and ends up back there. But i do think they're trying to find him a new home. Let me get back to toronto. then We just talked about Zach hyman the goaltending situation. We've talked about a plenty jack. Campbell is the goaltender under contract. He will be a maple leaf next season question. Mark about frederik anderson question mark about number three. Who's out there on another team right now. What are your spidey senses. Tell you about the goaltending in toronto. It's a great question. I think the goaltender market's gonna be really interesting. You know with the montreal situation now. Where they're they're gonna leave weber unprotected in there. They're gonna lose. Jake allen you don't think they can do a deal to get ron francis to stay hands off. I hear it's expensive man. He don't someone told me who had been a position to know that the The ask and this may all changes. The deadline approaches. That the ask for staying hands off of a player as a first and a third. I've heard it's been very very high. That's very very high. That's very high very very high and that kind of fits but i. I haven't heard that you know the goalie. Market's going to be going to be fascinating. Someone told me that you know this new dell covid thing is really interesting you know. Carolina has indicated that they think what he could win in our is too high and you know some people wonder if it's appear negotiating tactic but other people tell me. They think they're serious that they'll only go to a certain point with the delicate and and then they might move on any maple leaf wise. Well i should talk about. The goal is because i keep on losing my train of thought right like this is not your fault. This is my fault like my flee like attention span. I keep getting distracted by something shiny. The name of this podcast cats and laser pointers go really is so true. Goalie wise everybody thinks seattle is taking dreger from florida and signing him. Now will that happen. I don't know but people are expecting it. So what other goaltenders. Now i think seattle is interested in whole be but not at the number. I think they want to see if they can get vancouver to retain something or try something there and then seattle's undoubtedly going to take a couple of goalies to see if they can flip them because if it's dreger we'll see what happens. Withhold be and montreal things. It's going to be allen and all of a sudden. Where else could we be going with this. Didn't we all think. I thought that anton khudobin was going to be one of those guys but then big ben bishop goes out in agreed to waive his no trade right. There's another one bishop. Mike smith isn't signed yet and edmonton..

"Gov dot org which is not the actual website for the CDC. So there's other things in this particular bogus email that is not from the CDC so you pay very close attention that this is a great example in case you get a phishing attack or an email that you believe is legit but his actually a phishing email that maybe give you some clues what to look at in the future so it this is just another case of a phishing attack design to harvest user names and passwords from people who click the link sound familiar. We talk about this quite often. It is one of the best tricks that the bad guys have to steal your personal information in open up other means possibly still your cash and money through bank accounts and other means so even though these links look like they will take you to the CDC Dot Gov website about the corona virus. While they don't you'll probably land on a fake Microsoft outlook log on page or some sort of email log on page thou. Those are to be created by the bad guys and that's created for the sole purpose to seal user names and passwords so criminals control these fake sites in these fake outlook pages. So there's no reason to provide logon credentials to visit a public website right. Why WOULD CDC want that? That's not going to happen so once the bad guys capture your log on credentials. Use them to get access to your email account and look for anything worth stealing according to a member of Kubersky security team so the more information here on putting the podcast notes with some other examples here another great one right now is from an organization that's again Saying they're worth the CDC but they're not. They're actually in this case asking for donation in Bitcoin to help fight the virus in their particular country. Boy that's a stretch so ca persky research have spotted other militias. Emails made to look like that there were sent to the seas. Cdc like the one. I'm going to show you in the podcast knows and this one that I'm showing you in the podcast that we're talking about now. Ask for that donation via Bitcoin to help fund is incident management system. That's coordinating the response to the corona virus so funding of the above project. Quite a huge cost and we plead for your goodwill donation. The email says nothing is too small from ten dollars to any 'em out the message reads and there's some typos in there too. You'll see those quite humorous. So of course the CDC's a government agency funded here in the US by tax dollars so doesn't solicit for individual donations and it certainly doesn't and as far as I know has never accepted bitcoin. So some cyber criminals are also using the krona viruses spread malware. What a. What a crazy thing. There's a link in the email are supposed to go to an educational material website that will also affect your computer security experts. Tell NBC News that these initial phishing attacks irks successful. The vitamin these attacks will quickly multiply so how to protect yourself from corona virus email scams. So you always need to be skeptical of any mail that ask you to click on a lake or open an attachment even when the email seems legitimate and. This is usually from emails that you received that. You've never really asked for Information. You didn't sign up for a newsletter. You're not is not an account that you created is gonna be an email that you receive. That looks legitimate. But it's not something that you're really familiar with this case again. Like I said before the bad guys are preying on panic and fear in this case is all revolving around the corona virus so in most cases you can probably get the information you need by typing in the URL yourself for the latest information on the Krona virus outbreak. Just go directly to the CDC website and that CDC DOT GOV and so. There's a security team at SAPPHO security management company. That has some great tips. And we've talked about this before. These are the most basic tips to make sure you don't fall victim to any phishing scam. So let's go over this very briefly here so never be taken by the sender's name in that email so scammers can put any name they like in the from feels like we talked about before. Cdc Dash Gov dot. Org isn't really the the legitimate Cinder IS CDC DOT Gov which is so always look look out for that and always look out for spelling.

"Hey thanks so much for tuning in to ruin the bad guys. Day Radio PODCASTS. I thank you so much. Hey upscale Myers. I'm the host of Ruina bad guys day radio and I WANNA start off by thanking everyone who continues to support the show and especially those loyal listeners. Who Keep sending in all that great feedback and all those terrific emails. Thank you very much Jack. Lot of bad news happening right now. A lot of the corona virus information spreading around the viruses spreading all over the United States aftermath of it spreading across other countries around the world. Pretty unfortunate really sad. His at bag is have no limits to what they do to defraud us so somebody will probably seem some of these phishing emails spam emails coming through mailbox lately. But there's a great article out right now. from NBC News. How to avoid falling victim to a corona vires e mail scam so some you guys probably see the solicitously. Divan this and make sure we can stop these e mail scams coming from bad guys that are really trying to tap into our fair in panic about the corona virus through email on phishing scams. And some of you guys probably seen this. I know some of us have been talking about this off line about all these crazy phishing emails not just the brunt of Iras e mail scams that are out there right now but several other ones that are floating around. We'll talk a little bit later on another podcast but I WANNA welcome everybody back to great show had a couple weeks off got charged and ready to go full force and fight the bad guys and guys thank you so much all that great feedback and support. It really means a lot. I really appreciate it so so. Is anyone that you guys got one of these emails from the Centers for Disease Control and prevention the CDC or who the World Health or the corona virus outbreak. While you probably have hopefully some of those have been legit and hopefully some of those have been from your organization or companies. So do you think you should read it well? Of course the bad guys are are banking on that your curiosity and the the way the media is driving this story that you probably don't click on that email. 'cause you're very curious about the latest news. So should you click on it? Should you click on that length as go to another site? 'cause you download the file that tells you how to prevent the krona virus. What would I answer some of those questions here? Shortly because the cybercriminals these bad guys are counting on you making that mistake with one of these phishing emails so this outbreak is a dream. Come true for criminals who use it as a basis for email attacks design to snag your personal information still money in effect computers in Maui word. Does this sound familiar shirt. Does we talked about this all the time? These phishing email attacks coming from bad guys do a variety of things with typically is to steal your personal information somehow. Get Away around that information and get to a secure account that you own or that you manage to steal money and perhaps infect other computers with malware so the militias email this link to the corona virus apparently is first appeared in early. February so this is right when the viruses probably had its hide as is coming out of China so is making it one of the first big phishing campaigns of the year so a global health disaster like this creates a golden opportunity for fraudsters as there is no population or demographic that is not paying attention to this information so as a result the potential for impulse. Those impulse in panic clicking is higher than normal and this is according to Adam Levine. Additional security expert. Who's the chairman of Cyber Scout? A data security firm in the author of slight held to protect yourself in a world of scammers fissures in identity thieves so a lot of these bogus emails. Look legit and I'M GONNA post a couple of these bogus emails on the podcasts. In the PODCAST. Note so you you can look at and see. Kinda see what we're talking about here so I'm going to post that in the podcast notes. So what you're going to see in these phishing emails that are trying to grab your attention. Hopefully get you to click on a link. Are these corona virus awareness. Emails and some of these emails are coming from. Who in all? Y'All should know who right now is front center in the news. And who is the World Health Organization so vc one of these emails In your from WHO or the World Health Organization really be aware that this possible phishing scam so much. Show you again in. The podcast knows what this e mail looks like but the email looks legit on the surface but if you really start looking at it with a really close eye an attention to detail again there some misspellings. The word safety is missing the letter. E is very interesting in this part of the title of this e mail to there's other peculiar things about this email that would grab your attention Some some sentences or words without spaces and just a little strange Verbiage so anyway it is not legit and that this particular email that on the show you is fake email from the World Health Organization is not really from them. It's fake it's designed to make it look like it is so that you can click on a link there. So those who click on that link usually wind up on a site this created by criminals to steal your email credentials and other personal information again. This is a typical basic fishing attack. And in this case the bad guys are using the news of the day the Krona Virus. Scared us out there to scare you into reading the email clicking on one of these links so Sophos is a UK based Internet Security Company. Recently warned about bogus emails that appeared to be providing information about the krona virus safety measures from who again who is the World Health Organization a senior analyst. There said that the email is short and simple something that could be created and just a few minutes. The message doesn't need to be very complicated. They say because there's so much interest and concern about the virus. All of the criminals need for you to click on the link and land on a site that they control so that they can still your email password with that they can take over whatever they want basically and probably hit other sites and again once once again. We'll say this over and over and over again still your personal information for other means to possibly get into bank accounts and things so with this current fishing attack right now it looks like the fraudsters are really designing their emails to look like they're coming from the CDC or who makes a Lotta sense right so they typically have an attention grabbing subject lines such as corona virus outbreak in your city emergency. So we've talked about fishing emails before. What is one of the number one things we talked about what these fraudsters do with phishing emails? They create a sense of urgency. They want you to have to feel compelled to do something right now so in this case we're all panicking while some of us are. I'm trying to remain calm here and really be realistic. But the bad guys are really tapping into the fear and panic that is around the media blitz with krona virus so in this case to corona virus outbreak in your city could be that. They're gonNA fish in. They may already have some other information that you're in Atlanta so be corona virus outbreak in Atlanta Georgia. So probably be an official agency logo from the CDC or who pace it on that email from the actual website. It adds credibility in a glance. You know you're not gonna pay that much attention to it so you know when you first look at it that Cinders e-mail address yes. Let's talk about that. That sinners email address will appear legitimate in. So you look until you look at that with a little more detail. So in this case is particularly mailed give you an example eleven podcast notes example email address is CDC Dash Gov dot org or dot org so the bag is create domains that are very close very similar to the actual CD SITE. Look is the actual. Cdc Governmental website is very simple. Cdc Dot Gov. That's it is not. Cdc Dash Gove DOT ORG or CDC Dot Org the official website for the CDC IS CDC DOT GOV. So it makes that deception easy to miss an easy for you to believe this is legitimate email so one of the bogus emails. I was spotted by a Kaprisky a big global cybersecurity company. I've found claims that the CDC has established a management system. Coordinate a domestic and international public health response so recipients are urged to click on a link that looks like a legitimate. Cdc Dot Gov web page to get an updated list of new cases around your particular city so of attached another example of what that email looks like again. It's very very compelling. It looks real but when you look at it a little bit closer you're GonNa find some irregular details about the email address again. Allstate again is not. Cdc DOT GOV in the email header CDC Dash.

that's you can't do that that's way too much in commission they're not gonna read it out you have the highlight in screen shot and like there's this all this learning curve and go yeah and and that's what you do for that bank but this other bank it's different so this is where companies throw their hands up in there and they said hey we've tried and it's broken and they always just side of the cardholder and they don't care about us well once you get past the steel in you know again that's why we exist you don't don't go through the pain of this massive learning curve or let's greatly reduce it once you get past that and you've got things the way they want it there is absolutely there's absolute revenue you can recover no doubt or absolutely huge i mean an unmitigated it'd be like you're best friend help you fight these chargebacks in really get back that revenue because it is today that's what's so important is key is getting that money back that could otherwise been lost along with that crime yeah absolutely well that's awesome hey you know hatred there's so many businesses out there right now the believe there's like no aro why no return on investment of fighting chargebacks i hear this all the time you know is they all say hey just not worth my time is just part of doing business you know hey this when the biggest misconceptions and then the truth their consequences and what we're talking about as a consequence if you don't like you know they chargebacks in really we need a really talk about what is the real r a y infighting chargebacks i mean can you help our listeners know really understand spend more young let's and i'll give even some of the quick examples i look out when i get on the phone with emergent to identify if we should you know keep discussing in talking with each other not end i'll be honest i think there are some merchants where the r y infighting chargebacks is quite lower may not exist and what i've found is this the merchants with a really low average order value or you know they've got a subscription for six bucks a month five bucks a month it can be very hard even when you look at costs from service provider or when you break down labor even if you get some unreal trained up in real skilled it's hard to justify that but not you know most ecommerce merchants don't really fanta that bucket so when i look at r a y when it comes to fighting these hey let's look stir average order value let's look at the last twelve months twenty four months you know and if you're seasonal and very little bit how we look at this but let's let's look at what is that average number of disputes 'em from what you can tell in if someone has eight front and fraud solution lucian you know looking for malicious fraud that's really helpful because then they can go okay we have you know hundred chargebacks on average per month and when we look at are fraud data insight for malicious fraud you know stolen identity fraud we find you know it's there's about twenty percent of those off probably fall under that category so okay so we've got around eighty payment disputes going on and if we were to respond to those appropriately inaccurately 'em you know and again you can go way deep unless you're gonna even try to filter out how many of them are are followed and legitimate right not every charge not all charge visor bad some religious that you you you know you brought it upon yourself but let's just say you know in this example there's eighty yet you can go after and respond to and let's say you're physical goods merchant and you have good information you know for example you have shipping confirmations and other things you you keep track of those order forms and how people are responding in confirming purchases and you have good information you know you can recover fifty sixty percent of those most likely only down and say hey let's be a little conservative let's say we just recovered thirty of the eighty andrew average order value is two hundred bucks well you know they're six thousand dollars a you can get back and you know it's definitely you when you respond to eighty chargebacks seiken assure you that comes were nowhere near a a thousand dollars so you're trading you know that that money updates five hundred bucks six hundred dollars there's four you know potential of recovering six thousand that's the type of conversations were having an dicon berry so i typically have a rule of thumb of hey fewer if you're around fifteen dollar average order value and you have you know around fifty chargebacks per month there's prob you're probably getting into some real are why potential oh yeah and then what if you're cost of goods is even higher than that so i've helped manage companies with the drivers transactions are over two hundred dollars and so and then some of those especially if you're electronics you're margins on electronic goods are very tight and if you're not trying to recover those charged extra lost good i mean you are really out in let's let's titus into one of the problems we all faces fraud professionals it's getting internal cross team visibility to you're fraud effort so you couldn't break in are why down pretty far especially people have the capacity in the willingness to do so you could start saying okay that transaction action yeah wasn't it was a hundred dollar average order value let's say in the shipping cost was you know five bucks ten bucks but what's you're marketing cost per converted sale well you know it's two dollars okay well without a doubt on there's down there too and so you start talking about different organizations well what's are advertising costs what's these things that go into each cell that we make so then you see in which is real the real cost that companies are attracting in ukraine associated to recovering covering revenue is also were covering those tosses well that's great you know what's interesting about understanding they are while fighting chargebacks is really understanding like we said before the commonalities of you're charged race where you're coming from in which you really digging deeper you'll have a better understanding as an organization about how maybe you need a change certain things with their services or you merchandise return policy maybe were taught restocking fee in at the end of the day are we alternative really make their customers happy in end in that's really what's important so when you really get down to the nitty gritty really have the a tool in happy analysis and mitigate improvised you're really able to add in a moment's notice that you're fingertips really understand where you're charged extra have happening how you could increase revenue by finding the chargebacks in at the same time make customers happy i mean is in the world do end something i'll add to this this is my favorite thing about you know talking about represents and empowering merchants is you know at the end of the first off no one wants to do this it's not on putting the paper and evidence together and making sure you do it right and sending it off and hoping and praying you win it takes a certain percent yeah do the end you know a lot of times we find there's just organizations are responsible for it there's no like personal job functioned incentive to do it in so what what i enjoy though is being able to say hey okay recover the revenue great figure out this process processing with us we have partial automation in full automation options you know reduce workforce they're not necessarily have to employ anybody and you can do this awesome okay cool this makes a doable yeah but to me the best part is one week and say okay let let me show you what were putting together together for you now okay these are you're tom ten products that you know we rank the top ten products by charge back rate for you right in a dashboard oh oh wow we just released that two months ago in the charge back rates at four percent for that product what's going on there well the color of the photo it isn't reflective of actual product you know you can go and now you're being too high end let's go figure that out you know which which of are marketing sources that we used is driving the most dispute well shoot it's a you know twitter google it space book it's affiliates that you pay for whatever it is you're using if you wanna if you associated where the orders came from from you're marketing channels we will put that charge back data match it instantly in in real time people love that they can go oh my gosh i didn't know that you know these three marketing sources you know josh that seventy five percent of are disputes right there when you manage them better do they not understand the type type of traffic there bringing or is it even worth while being with them know that you know that is so awesome empowering because you you turney charge back agent are charged back analysts from someone that's in a support role in someone that's adding value to their entire company because instead of being in support role in just pushing paperwork in being involved in this enlists see of data spreadsheets the vet person by analyzing the data that mitigated can provide with their chargebacks and disputes add value to the company's revenue by showing the company executives hey i could save a lot of money by doing some simple things in really improve customer service it's a window and that's where like said this is where it's fun you empower them to be like hey i'm not just responding disputes now i'm i'm sitting down with the marketing team and just saying hey did you notice i'm sitting down with are full team in other parts of the business of being like hey this is how losses are impacting each organization specifically you know i think we could change and do things better or hey i was prompted look this just came up i was you know you could set up custom notifications of things you say hey i just was notified in double checked with thin mitigate or will we saw this product spike lee's chargebacks or this country or this been in your first subscription description were starting to see chargebacks at the fourth month within the subscription you know why is that let's go investigate so now you've been tipped people off as to win you should be looking into the be more preemptive instead of waiting for it to become an obvious issue it helps you catch it in the very early stages so that's where the that's where it's i enjoy talking the business just hey be committed to this dig in yeah nobody wants to do it but you gotta look at it for what it really is going to benefit the business and that's also trend because as you know what's so great about what you do trent in what mitigated does and what i really like about you're companies that you're not selling the product you're actually try enrich people would be awareness and education about finding chargebacks andy's disabused of make their entire company better to increase their revenue and at the end the day increase that customer service and what's so important as what i'm hearing from you is again what i'm getting out of this take away i'm having ears again over and over again finding fraud isn't just one dimensional fighting fraud invite involves this layered approach you're gonna have you this great fraud solution provider in you could pick and choose and google those those providers on the internet but also you need have a complete packaging that involves days they charged back in.

seventy five percent six thousand dollars fifty sixty percent six hundred dollars two hundred dollars twenty four months thousand dollars fifteen dollar hundred dollar twenty percent twelve months four percent two dollars two months one week

"That. Defrauded hundreds of victims, including seniors a more than three million dollars. So this tech support scam. A lot of times very effective with senior citizens again, Chris at that fear creates a sense of urgency. They're very persistent in they often target seniors. So these isn't Torney general of there in North Carolina has made this announcement that an individual named Bishop Mattel. He's twenty four years old pled guilty before a US magistrate judge. I currently released on bond syncing date has not been set quite yet. But according to this indictment released by the department of Justice, the information that plea agreement Mattel was part of this conspiracy that carried out an international internet scheme or tech support scam by placing fake pop up ads on victims computers to convince them that Sears computer problem in induced into pay for purported technical support services and then to resolve the issue. Okay. So this Bagai admitted in court that he. In another co conspirator, actually resided in Charlotte, North Carolina, and they were owners and managers of a they critical capstone technologies. LLC also headquartered in Charlotte that claim to provide computer related services to customers in capstone. Looks like conducted business using several different aliases. We won't talk about all those those the bag is carried out their tech support scam by using a call center located in India. So they partner with some bag is in India all set up the handle this tech support calls with potential victims. So this is a very labyrinth scheme scam by fraudsters are very knowledgeable on how the system works. So according to the information the indictment of pop up ads where central part of the conspiracies take support scam altogether here. So the these individuals and other co conspirators purchase blocks malicious pop up and wear from publishers around the world so limited against these bad guys. Purchase blocks a. Delicious pop up adware from publishers around the world. So the fake pop-ups would suddenly appear on your computer in. It would freeze your screen prompt in you, the victim to call this capstone technologies at the numbers shown where shown on the pop up ad. So just like what we talked about in. When some of you probably seen on your own PC's. It looks like when when the victims called this India based tech support center for assistance, the co conspirators use remote access tools to gain control of the victim's, computer. So that's what we talked about before do not be lured in to being convinced. You should download this remote software is once you do. That's when the bag is can get into your PC. So once the bad guys were control of these victims computers, the scammers identified various fictitious causes for the victims purported, computer malfunction ever. Remember this pop up in these other ways, the bad guys are doing doing this tech support scam. They're creating this on your commute is not really happening. They're making you believe it is because you're freezing. Computer, shown up a phony baloney blue screen, so what they're doing is at their. There's telling you about these these are fictitious causes for what's going on with your computer. So low time zone include letting you know or make you believe there's a presence of Maur or other computer viruses. And so what happens you the victim or the seniors actually start paying for a virus cleanup or other tech support services offered by the frost or so looks like the indictment also says the co conspirators would charge victims between two hundred in two thousand dollars to make these computers operable, again is almost holding your computer for ransom until you pay the money and the and then it gets cleaned up. I guess this is crazy. So Mattel and his co conspirator bag is to fraud at hundreds of victims throughout the United States, some of whom were elderly and senior citizens of more than three million dollars. So the FBI actually conducted this investigation in worked with the United States Department of Justice in. And the assistant attorney general there, North Carolina. So great job guys. That's awesome. So why right now to back in March looks like US attorney's office as created initiative that aims to combat elder financial expectation by expanding efforts to investigate in prosecute financial scams at specifically targets seniors in educate older adults on how the dentist scams and avoid being victims of financial fraud. So that's that's another part of this podcast is all about education awareness, giving the word out there to people who don't know better in really educated into be on the lookout because they are targets for these tech support scammers. And if you never been a victim of tech support scam uses information and go out there and educate others. So that they do not fall victim to these bag is operating all across world to defraud you of your money. So a lot of this information is available on the podcasts notes on include some information from the United States of office in the United States apartment. Justice. Great case from the FBI and includes hell. Awful hints and notes from Microsoft that we spoke about just earlier talking a little bit more in detail about what to do if you

But I'm sure all of you have had some form of another a call just like that or even a phony baloney phishing Email, stating the same thing. So we're talking about some of these tech support scams that are out the right now what's being done about it. And talk about a great case actually that was just recently planned out and the state of North Carolina by the United States Department of Justice. Great case, they're they're really highlights what the government and other large corporations like Microsoft for the fight. These tech support scammers that are internationally base. And targeting us here in the United States. So great information there. But I as always we like to talk about this stupid criminals on guys day here from the New York Post reports credit card fraud suspects nab over at careless. Typo? This is really about minding your Ps the articles states and eagle clerk at a new Neiman. Marcus store in Hudson yard help bus a credit card fraud. Ring by noticing a lower case letter on a bogus car that just didn't look, right. According to law enforcement workers at the west side development sleek new shopping mall were told to be on the lookout for phoney baloney cards. So when the unidentified clerk notice the word, please wasn't capitalized at the beginning of a sentence on the back of Neiman, Marcus card. He raised the alarm sources said, please call toll free one eight eight or six two four seven to five for program assistance was on the back of a card. However, the word please was not capitalized, especially the. Capital of key capitalizing pizza, the bad guys need to go back to school looks like so to other people apparently were recipe, this is after that same clerk notice the same typo on to other phony cards onto other occasions over a week, and then told their manager who then notified the police leading to the arrest of the Colo three people. So to other people arrested at this luxury store chain with fake cars bearing the same exact error while I guess, we're not editing their own counterfeit worker. This Anna sad for them. They should probably learn about grammar and go back to school you bad guys. Shame on you. So anyway, it looks like the suspects were all linked to credit card fraud ring base in flushing Queens, New York or forty two sources the allegedly used the cars to try to by thousands of dollars worth of Chanel and Louis Vuitton handbags in total. The five suspects allegedly tried to swipe more than fifty one thousand dollars in designer. Handbags that is amazing in Cording to the police. These crimes are listed as grand larcenies forty to them. So that's no big surprise there. Fifty one thousand dollars and designer handbags and the bad guys are caught because of very very alert cashier who noticed a typo on the bogus cars away to go Neiman, Marcus and the local forties there in New York way to go. That's awesome. Big job. They're bad. Guys, busted, again, not too smart and time to go probably school. I'm sure jail though. Bill to find some books on spelling in basic grammar. But anyway, glad you guys come back today. And and listen to this podcast. I wanna thank Matt Chris n with fraud, not frog dot

"Welcome to ruin a Bank is day radio podcast with fraud expert. Skip Meyers this is your guide to fighting fraud and chargebacks. Learn the best front provincial solutions and strategies how to enhance your fraud prevention team, and how to prosecute criminals. Now, here's your host skip buyers. Hillary one invent you for tuning into ruin the bad guys day radio. Hey, I'm skip Myers. And I'm your host today for guys day radio. Hey, I I wanna start off in. We have a great show lined up this weekend. Looking very very special guest that helps you fight crossers who enhanced training and wariness to a better understanding of cybersecurity an internal audit controls. But I as always I have some great news and updates involving very stupid criminals. So this just in from ABC, thirteen KT, arcade, TV and Houston, Texas busted, bumbling burglars. But dial nine one one while robbing a local Houston best buy store. Unbelievable. You can't make this stuff up like three stooges goodness scripted this any better police say they busted these bumbling burglars after they but dialed nine one one while. Robbing local best buy just outside of Houston. The nine one one call came in around three AM from a cell phone, please told the news Pru. But there is nothing, but background noise. When the call came in the police decided the ping the phone all the Paul was actually coming from a local best buy in Sugarland, which is a Houston suburb. Just as the burglar alarm was coming in from that exact same sport that said, you know, sometimes it's just meant to be plus the bad guys. How stupid they yet bring your cell phone to this robbery? Unbelievable, anyways, they somehow but down nine one one according to police, and then the PD put everything together and Termine that these two miss has worth hurrying at the same time. So officers are already in route to that alarm, call when they got the other nine one one call that was, but you know, I can't imagine the look on those bag guys when the cops pulled up in the parking lot is that how do they figure this out not knowing that one of their buddies, but tunneled nine one one? Unbelievable, so Laden with all the stolen goods that these lead in a stolen pickup truck and led the cops in a forty minute. High speed chase with speeds reaching over one hundred twenty miles an hour of the news crew search reveal laptops and other like Tron IX stashed in the trunk that said to three men picked up nearby location the truck when Bagai bailed, and he is still being hunted by police we love super Bagai stores here at ran bag is day radio. I was laughing with is hard to control that I read that story like six times preparing for this. And I'm trying to magin the whole thing. I don't know you gotta take your phone to you know, this big crime masterminded. I don't know what do you Instagram in your friends when when you're doing this scrum, and you can't make it up by lot skip. Thanks so much for having me, man. I'm excited honor to be here. I'm honored to. I it's, you know, we built a relationship or the last several months, and we both share a lot of the same ideas and passion for building awareness in creating that higher education level for all those great fraud fighters fraud practitioners out there always trying to get a little bit of a leg up on the bad guys. And you know, one thing I was a, you know, pre podcast review. I just have to ask how did you come up with the name for your company, especially fraud? Not frog dot com. I just love that. That's awesome. You know, it goes back over a decade ago. When I when I first started telling people that I was a fraud investing. Later. I would have a series of conversations. I thought I was doing a great job selling what I was doing. Usually it was against it was strangers or people sit next to me on a plane and go into this elaborate discussion of how I prevent detect fraud. And finally, they look at me with this puzzled face like, okay, I understand preventive how many frogs are their in business's that you go into. And so it just became one of those things remind okay, it's it is fraud, not frog. So that was kind of the main thing that's the tagline for the website lers prevent- prevent detect fraud, not frogs. So you're not into fibia NHS as others would think. You know, herpetology never was a strength of mine. So no, that's awesome. Pay. So you got an extensive background in a lot of great content credentials. Can can you tell our listeners a little bit more about your background, and how you got in this business. Yeah. Happy to you know, what I don't claim to to know everything there is about. But but I have had I've been fortunate to have a lot of good experiences. It all started with trying to break into the industry. I I literally applied for over fifty jobs, and I could not get in everyone required experience to get experience. And I just couldn't get in. And so finally found a company that was willing to take me on as a cyber security consultant, which I thought was a little ironic because I had no experience, but that was the titles junior cyber security consultant in amazing company that gave me amazing opportunities to travel world in in find and actually build a fraud program. So I was able to do that. We we did it for Larr. Fortune companies and then throughout my career of been able to help establish and build and mature other fraud and cyber security programs. This awesome. You talked about some of the first steps she took. But what were some of the things that you think that really got you that first of job to get started, you know, inside or security and Sarah security consulting. So it was one of the situations where I had to go above and beyond. I was competing against, you know, hundreds of other people in my state same time for the few jobs that existed jobs in security, then aren't they didn't flourish. Like they do now back. There's more demand than inventory now today ten twelve years later, so the few that actually happens you you had a fight for and I went to an after hours mentoring event, the things that most college students are like, yeah, I'm not going to that. I listened to this this speech that to be honest to this day was probably the worst pres. Stations. I'd ever been to. But afterwards, I went to the the presenter and just mass. The question can I how can I break into the industry? Do you know of any opportunities? And while he didn't give the most stellar presentation. He was connected, and he's like, oh, I know of an internship. Let me send you over to that. Gimme your resume in literally within three weeks. I had a job. So after trying to do what everyone else had done apply. Apply. Not even get an interview just reject letter after reject letter took me getting out of my shell. And just you know, approaching someone and just saying this is what I'm looking for do, you know of an opportunity and literally within three weeks. I had the job John. I think that's always the difference maker. I mean, it's resumes. Get lost in the crowd yet to show people that you're unique, you know, the Matt has a different look on a different perspective of looking at things from not always traditional perspective in when you do that you set yourself apart from everybody else's, you know, doing this job like they just read it out of a book. Yeah. Even skip even right after I got the job. I quickly realized on this. You know, I think there were seven or eight of us on that team that supported in over one hundred thousand employees. I I realized quick I've got a differentiate myself or I'm going to die. I mean, I I literally the best thing I could do is bring them coffee and Rama noodles. And so I said how can I how can I ask a skill? Set are grow a skill set that can make me valuable to this company to where they're gonna wanna keep me and move it from an internship to full time gig, which is exactly what happened after just a few months. And so yeah, I took the initiative to find something that what I believe didn't exist at the time by the skill set. And that's where I researched this certification called a certified fraud examiner. And you know, I scrolled through it. I'm like, man. This is exactly what I wanted to do. I don't know if you knew this, but I actually wanted to law enforcement and go into federal in just my life. Didn't take down course, which I'm super grateful things wouldn't have turned out the way they did how to gone that route. But I always wanted to be kind of that investigative space. So I found this this designation called certified fraud examiners ACF, E dot com. And just said, this is exactly what I need personally. But more than that what this company needs to help further. A mature their cyber program. So I took it to our to my boss chief information security officer at the time. I said, hey, what do you think about this? And you know, he took a chance on me. And I'm grateful to that to this day took a chance on me realize that we could use that to further the business, and we actually build a process that landed us multi multi million dollar contracts, a really really cool thing. So awesome. Hey, hey, everyone thinks for tuning if you're just now tuning in. We're speaking with Matt Khorasan with audit law consultancy and frog not fraud dot com. And right now, if you're just tuning in, we're really diving deep until Hal mad is really transforming anti-fraud CP's or continuing education and professional development for fraud fighters in it's so important, and this is a great conversation. Because a lot of us in his interesting so often we get caught up in just focusing on investigations in the fraud losses and really bad guys. But really staying ahead of the bad guys really comes from continual edge. Education. I mean, really building those skills the fight the bad guy. So what what do you really think? How can we leverage? Some existing skill sets for those who are really looking to break into this anti-fraud industry. What's some of the things you think are most important? I appreciate that question. It is tough industry break into. But it's an even tougher industry to stay competitive. So it's not one. And that's why love it so much. It's so dynamic. It's so fluid. You can't just rest on prior experience. You always have to be getting better. What you do investigators that have thirty and forty years experience men, they have a ton of Allieu. But where what I'm seeing is. They're lacking in how fraud is committed now today in how it will be committed in the future. And so that's one of my main missions is helping people get quality education. It's modern it's relevant. That's not the boring side deck that everyone just wants to dilate and two points bullet points. It's like give me the deck. I can read the deck. But yes, what I can't read his experience. So I focus on finding people who are passionate about sharing their experience. You know, the truth is health was committed thirty and forty years ago doesn't fairy too much now it's the same frauds happening. They're just doing it a different way. And so you have to detect it a different way. So man, anyone that I can talk to that Scott thirty forty years experience, even twenty I gravitate to them and try and pull from them their experience, and and then get them to share it in a way that perhaps his different than they've done before. Like, I said not through a PowerPoint, but through a live video presentation or through an online training that that is interactive through a group forums through Facebook groups, just the ability in live sessions, of course. But just to get them in front of other investigators other people who are trying to sharpen their craft. It's been an absolute. Mine. I think the other question you asked is how how do you break into this industry? How to us how to use your existing skill sets? So I'm a huge believer. You don't have to come from military or law enforcement to be a fraud examiner. Now, if you have that you do have an upper edge in some ways, but I've talked to people who have been fast food workers construction workers in oceanographer. I talked to someone who's an ocean honor for the becoming. Yeah.

"Welcome to ruin a back is day radio podcast with fraud expert skip buyers. This is your guide to fighting fraud and chargebacks learn the best fraud prevention solutions and strategies how to enhance your fraud prevention team and held on prosecute criminals. Now, here's your host skip buyers. Hello, everyone in for tuning into ruin a bag is day radio. Combat. Hey, we got a great news article this week as some other information elected share some other things have been hitting the news quite a bit in the last couple of weeks. And I thought I was sure that with you guys. A lot of good information. You could take back to work for to your friends or family to help them prevent from being a victim from fraudsters and Mauer attacks and this week, but I really wanna talk about is how fraudsters exploited malware for financial gain so Mao where what is now receives in the news and probably hits your spam? Folder credit bit from other publications or other companies trying to get your business, but Mauer's any softer intentionally designed to cause damage to computer. Maybe it's your server your computer network and smell or does it damage after it's already implanted or introduce in some way into a target, computer or network. So Mauer is going to be attached most likely to some sort of phishing Email in. Somehow, you the user or someone else in your company or network does something that unfolds this code that's part of this, malware, I could be commuted computer, viruses, or worms Trojan horses. Sometimes it's spyware ransomware on there's all kinds of other terms. But Mallard basic form is is militias. It has malicious intent in it acts against you know, your company's best interests or your best interests. And there's something harmful with that malware that is typically designed to still your personal information. And so that the Bagai can have financial gain at some point by defrauding you or someone else. So before it gets started tradition. Here's always talk about stupid criminals in boy, there's not a not a day that goes by that. I don't have a hard time. Finding some news articles about dumb criminals, and this is a news article adult Oklahoma involving Uber, and it looks like things at work. Out well for three Oklahoma City teenagers who allegedly planned to rob a Bank using Uber as transportation and police say that the Uber driver who took the to debate one Tuesday afternoon called Thorndike's EFI heard one of them say he had a gun and he's on a cap somebody. So police said that the gun was later found on one of the teams after he tried to fight officers who arrived at the Bank, the teens had apparently already arranged in Uber for their getaway. Car says the news crew, it looks like the Uber driver his name. Mr. K says he was waiting outside the Bank. We saw the teenagers being taken away in handcuffs interested in was told by an officer that there had been a robbery attempt. Well, I guess he was right. Looks like according to drivers says, hey, they called me for the getter getaway car. Can you believe that? Hey, if you're going to do something like that like, rob a Bank, get your own car. He says, yeah. No kidding. Pretty stupid. What are they thinking? I mean, I'm gonna call Uber driver. Hey, buddy, wait outside here. So I'm gonna go rob this Bank and stick around long enough. So I can hop in. And we get away in time crazy stuff. I mean, I'm sure there's some sort of a legal substance involved there. They were taking before the robbery or before they decided to call Uber. Thank you for that. Great news, article out of home. That's awesome. So today fold in little bit more information about how fraudsters exploit malware for financial gain. So this week. I like to talk about a big case that the feds may just about a week ago. Just very recent. He may seen it in the news recently. But this is a very important case federal case where two Romanian cybercriminals were convicted of all twenty one counts relating to infect the over four hundred thousand victim computers with Mauer Hess. Right inflicting in being victim computers with Mauer and stealing millions and millions of dollars. And this is the actual press release that came out from the Justice department. Just very recently federal grand jury last week convicted to Bucharest Romanian residents of Twenty-one counts related to their scheme to infect victim. Computers with malware in order to steal credit card numbers and other information to sell on the dark market the dark web and other websites, and they are. Our intent was to mind crypto currency engage in online auction fraud and nounce by assistant attorney general Brian been cow sqi of the Justice Department's criminal division way to go menace. Also to these defendants were convicted at the twelve day trial of conspiracy to commit wire fraud conspiracy to traffic in counterfeit service marks that's interesting aggravated identity theft conspiracy to commit money laundering, in twelve counts of wire fraud each person there so citizen will begin in a few months in a Cording to testimony at the trial in other court documents one of the co conspirators who pleaded guilty collectively operated a criminal conspiracy out of Bucharest Romania. So we've been talking about this for months now on these podcasts about the infusion of international crime gangs targeting. Americans here in the United States is still are ideas and our cash, obviously, it's amazing how widespread in worldwide. This problem phenomenon is so the press release goes on says apparently this all began in two thousand seven with the development of proprietary malware, which they disseminated through militias emails purporting to be legitimate from entities like Western Union nor nanny virus and the IRS. So this is a old scheme being redone again over and over again. And why do the bag is all the fraudsters? All these people who are bad guys all over the world. Keep doing the same thing over and over to target us. That's right because it works. It's easy. It keeps working we need to keep getting the awareness out there in educate, everyone about the potential problems with Mauer and how the bad guys exploit this now where for their financial gain to commit. Fraud, you know. So again, what is Maur while this is software. This intentionally designed to cause damage to computers or servers or computer networks in it does damage of his after it has been in planted in some way on a computer. So how is this done think real hard? Now, the house is done while you're right. It's is from emails fishing. That's what this is about. This is why you see so many emails come in. And you can't understand why you're getting all these strange emails is fishing in what is fishing? Let's let's regroup in talk about what fishing is so fishing. Basically is Email messages claiming to come from a recognized source. You know, be company most likely someone you recognize it

"Welcome to ruin a Bank is day radio podcast with fraud expert skip buyers. This is your guide to fighting fraud and chargebacks learn the best front provincial solutions and strategies how to enhance your fraud prevention team, and how to prosecute criminals. Now, here's your host skip buyers. Hello everyone. Thank you for tuning into ruin a bad guys day radio show. Hey, I'm skip Myers. Your hosts are bad guys day radio. And I wanna start off by thanking everyone who continues to support the program, and especially those of you. He keeps any all those great emails and feedback. Hey, we have a great show lined up this week, including a very very special guest that helps you fight fraudsters and help prevent chargebacks before they really happen through VM PI or visas Merson purses inquiry programs, so before we get started. Let's discuss some fraud stance that are out there right now that will probably make you lose sleep tonight might not know that eighty six percent of all chargebacks may be cases of friendly frog in friendly fraud is increasing at a forty one percent, right. And it's been increasing that at that rate for over the past two years and seeing pe- losses will reach as staggering seven point two billion dollars by the year twenty twenty. And what's really a scary statistic? Is that approximately eight and ten customers admit to filing a charge van is of actually working out the issues to regularly with the seller or merchant? And that's what we don't talk about today. How can we really target Brindley Frossard, and and really target are charged program with reducing the amount of losses to our company and streamline the processes that our internal controls have to five chargebacks and disputes. So today as promise Rudy bad guys day radio will be featuring some the top fraud fighters industry throughout two thousand nineteen and today, I'm especially excited to introduce to you Scott Adams, withdrawn DVD, Scott at founder of thraw TV dot com has over twenty years of experience in the field of payments as both the merchant and fraud expert. He's worked with companies large and small Therese reduce chargebacks improve our y and fight fraud on multiple platforms. So we're. Gonna discuss the visa Mercer purchase inquiry program or VM PI. And how Scott's expertise can help save time with those disputes in eventually reduce charge bang. If your tension, please. So, hey, Scott. I'm so glad you could join us today. How are you? I'm doing great skip. Thanks for having me. That's awesome. Hey, you know, we've had a lot of discussions about this and known each other for a few years, and you really make an impact in fighting fraud and helping other versions really, reduce chargebacks and losses. Can you? Tell us me in our listeners more about VM PI, and how it works and make chores Bax dispute simpler and more automated. Yes, sure. So VP is actually a really interesting product that these decide to launch a few years back and idea was is that the one of the big problems, and you know, you just talked about Satistics around friendly fraud is that most of the time a few consumer looks at the credit card statement, all they see is a twenty something character descriptors, which oftentimes has a bunch of diversion. And so think about if you're a consumer you've got a credit card, you I'm sure you've had a time where you've looked at your statement and saw charge and said, okay, what is this and no idea, and I have. Yeah. Everyone has it doesn't matter. You could. Make one charge a month. And that's going to happen. Because you know, the merchant is not required a pissing there that makes sense in really most marches. Don't know any better. They don't understand that that descriptors is all the consumer has the recognize charge. So oftentimes, especially for new merchant. It's like a corporate name. You know, what who's going to recognize that you're gonna recognize the website? You're gonna recognize the the game your kids playing whatever that might be so visa decides that they needed a better way to handle this. And so that's where VPI came from. And they said, you know, let's make a product where the merchant can actually respond more or less directly to the merchants or site to the consumers question of what is this? And so they created the system it's actually really nice in that, you know, that kind of the flow goes, let's say that the consumer calls in to their credit card company. And you know, says, hey, I don't recognize this in the past that would just become a charge back because the issue or new knows no more about that transaction than the consumer does. Really, right. They might know. A corporate name or something which still help. Yeah. I've seen like that indicator. Be like db doing business as in. You're exactly right. I I see that. Sometimes I have no clue whatsoever. Even how to decipher that acronym. So it's very common in. Yeah. Very common. And you know, that's the thing is legally, it makes sense your business doesn't have to be the same name. There's a lot of different things legally why you might do that. But the the merchants often, especially neurons don't know to make something better just outside of EMP. I if you're a merchant out there, make sure your descript or actually describe something that the consumer will know about beyond that use the PI. And so we're VPI goes is that so kind of the new process consumer doesn't recognize they call this shore. And now if that is using VM PI, and this is only what visa by the way, they can press a button on their screen in. It'll pop up with more information, and that information could be anything that the merchant wants to pass back. And so. Set up new merchants. I tell them, you know, I need some basic information. But then I say, okay now, tell me what your consumers, but the person that's looking at the credit card statement would recognize and you keep in mind that you know, it might be if your product is targeted mostly for for Dulce for actual cardholders that it might be your your website name product names like that. But VPI lets you actually pass in your full shopping cart information. So if you're a merge of a shopping cart, you push it all in and so now, you know, the consumer called in let's say, this is a some form of website. That's a marketplace. And you know, the scripture might have been the marketplace mate. But the actual purchase was with some other, you know, provider some of the create its products, maybe and the issue now read off. Okay. So you bought it at this website. And here's an Email address that was used to buy it here is the name. Here's maybe an account name. And then if this shopping cart hero here, the five items you bought here, the prices, it looks like. One of these shipped. Here's your tracking number right? Basically the same stuff. You would get in the port at the merchants portal when where you bought is now in this recite. And so the idea being, you know, you you mentioned like helping disputes this actually way before that. And but yeah, the pass it would have been dispute, but the beauty of the system is that now let's that consumer call then they were told them what the what the purchase was and the best situation is that the consumer thin says, oh, wait. I know what that is sorry about or, you know, no charge back notice Butte, no fraud alert and best of all the merchant not only keeps the money, and they're no additional fees, but they keep a happy customer, and they can you. If it's a recurring product they can rebuild again. Or if it's like it's talked about like a shopping cart a marketplace. They keep that customer the customer will come back and buy for them. Again. This has been a long time coming for a service like this. Because I mean, we all know, you know, all of us that are in this business. Especially if you're working chargebacks, we had a way to produce that proof after the charge back was actually filed an and you know, and now we can use that that proof for that evidence of the transaction as a preventative measure before it turns into the charge back on what a great way to streamline the process and make things more efficient and to your point really keep those happy customers. That's it's I kind of as an extension of customer service, unites, if the merchant are, it'd be great if the consumer just call the March, but the card companies made it so easy and pitched it so much on the web on TV that there's no lie ability just call us. Now, they have the tools actually kinda help your customer support. So that works really well. No, that's awesome. In in. I mean, I can see all the time savings with those fraud analysts or those those reps that are actually working those chargebacks everyday making the phone calls sending those emails I mean, the potential to save money in reducing those processing times before they actually turn into chargebacks as huge in. Again. I think what we both can't stress enough. Is that the potential impact of improving your overall customer service metrics is just massive twin

"Credit card information, you need a car to print it on. Well, guess what you can go to Google by that to find a company that sells that stuff. So what else do you need? Well, you need you need a device. That will imprint that stolen information on that card stack stock that you just purchase guess what you can get an imprinting machine that will transfer that information onto that magnetic stripe on that car sock. You just purchase. So now, you have a full blown counterfeit clone card with someone else's identity on it. And this is nothing. New bag is been doing this forever is important that you as the fraud investigator in the fraud prevention expert, understand the potential impact of this kind of technology has on not just shoe, but other people so when you see card credit card. Fraud cases, come in Astle same kind of questions, I do sometimes too. I talked to people all the time. And they'd say their card was compromiser use that location that they never been to every heard of before in the same questions at the fraud investigators at the banks or credit card companies, do do you have your card in your possession. And sometimes they don't their purse or wallet was stolen this. And that's an easy one bad guy or any bad guy can get that card and goad basically any to any physical location and use that card, but if they still have their card in their possession in the car's been used somewhere else good chances been skim somewhere or their formation was stolen off the dark web or the internet that was posted for sale with their information to the highest bidder. But it's just good information to now. So just take some time educate yourself in. It's a little I opening when he go to the web, and you search for those type of products, how easy it is to get the right kind of quip -ment to still other people's information identity through ATM's or gas pumps. So what can you do? What can we do at least to stop this and slow it down? Again. It all starts with the weirdness and education. So whenever you go to eighteen machine wash for signs that AT may have been altered in any way. And again, it starts with that card slot. You know, does that ATM have parts that that just don't fit right? I mean are they crooked or they misplace or the kind of damage. I mean, we should really look at that. I mean, I know I do I'm always kind of paranoid about these things. But when you insert your card, especially at AT machine, for instance, that is a little bit more secluded. It's a little bit out of the way. It may be a stand alone ATM machine. That's, you know, at a sporting event or a concert is not part of a Bank or inside of a Bank wall on the outside or inside. So those would be things were make it easy for foster to install scheming device. But again, it's it may not always be that well installed, and it could be somewhat noticeable. If you look at it close enough in other words, again it. Could be crooked or sort of misplace or little off. So look look for those things in any size of potential tampering with that ATM machine. So sort of talked about this now, I would always recommend visiting when you need some money out of that ATM high-traffic or high profile ATM ATM's at are in areas that are high traffic in high lit areas, you know, in stores and lobbies and and shopping centers in the malls, you know, in and again, we're there's a lot of people around there. Definitely more safer than those standalone alone. I just folk about so member those bad guys, scammers wanna stay out of you. They wanna be invisible when they're installing these skimming devices. They don't want anybody to see that. So that's how they get away with this or able to do it usually in these secluded, standalone ATM machines or two gas stations. That are kind of secluded are easy targets was scammers to install these gaming devices. So they can collect your information. So now the. Simple one. You see the sometimes ATM's or at the gas pump. But cover your hand when you're entering your pin number. I know I do spend there's so many people around. Why wouldn't you do that? So that's a great safe safety tip there. You know, you should always do that. Even when you don't see anybody around. I mean who knows might be that little sneaky camera nearby logging in every stroke, you put on that keep pad for your pin number. You just wanna make sure you make it more difficult. So, you know, always be sure to to look around behind. You know, be be observant of your surroundings. I can't tell you. How many times I'm at the airport? Sometimes I'm at ATM machine. And there's so many people around me. I mean, I'm gonna cover my pin. My hand over the pin. Pad a look around make sure no one's trying to ease drop into what I'm trying to do, you know in personal information. So I went to secure their ability to see my pin that I'm entering into that machine. So again, be observed surroundings, you know, try to stand directly right there in front. Of the ATM, you know. And while you're using just kind of, you know, put your head on a swivel look around and make sure someone's looking over your shoulder. So this is some great tips. Remember, those things nothing to paranoid or too hard to do. But a great safeguard that you can use that you can pass along to other people if you're family, and or at work, so all this is about Ruina bad guys day. You know, what a good shat out to the United States secret service and conjunction with local law enforcement agencies here in Georgia. What a great bust putting these guys in jail for stealing your identity and still in our money. I mean, I can't tell you. This is a great way to start this podcast and really put a shout out about how important is to partner with your local law enforcement agency in other retailers in organizations to share this information. So bag is target somebody else. Hopefully, go back home to wherever they came from guys. Great shout out to everyone who's been sitting out in emails. And leaving voicemails of about their comments about the podcast. Thank you so much. It's been very inspirational and very positive really jazz about going forward to two thousand nineteen said last week last podcast. Some new stuff coming up. "Welcome to ruin a Bank is day radio podcast with fraud expert skip buyers. This is your guide to fighting fraud and chargebacks learn the best fraud prevention solutions and strategies how to enhance your fraud prevention team and held Hellum prosecute criminals. Now, here's your host skip buyers. Everyone. Welcome to ruin a bad guys day radio. Hi, I'm skip Myers. I'll be your host today. Welcome back. Always love to have you guys. Come back to the podcast. Can't thank you noth- for all the great emails and likes were getting on Twitter and L the great suggestions that you have been sending to me about future podcasts. And those of you who want to be interviewed on the podcasts of that is also I promised everyone last week on the pie casts at for two thousand nineteen on change it up a little bit and start inviting more people to be interviewed them actual experts in our industry, the fraud practitioners, those of you who are actually doing the work while you could really Lynn the helping hand and spread the good news about joining the movement to wrote a bad guys day. So I hope you guys made it through this week the polar vortex. Wow is really cold. Wasn't it? Some temperatures down minus twenty wind chill or more. Depending where you were. And I hope you made it out. Okay. And hopefully, the bad guys. Stayed inside to keep warm too. And had a little bit slower time at trying to ruin our our day, you know, and boy, they sure don't waste a lot of time trying to get back at it. So, hey, welcome again. And this week is the catch of the day episode today, we won't talk about the catch of the day. And today's catch today is where we highlight the department of Justice news just recently released talking about the federal crackdown of financial fraud in ATM skimming that continues with a lot of guilty pleas. So that is also news coming from the department of Justice. But before I start there. How's reading through a lot of news and talk about today on this podcast and always looking for new items and looking for silly, criminals or bad guys or just ordinary people making just bad decisions? And just in the news this week interesting. A student allegedly called in a hoax bomb threat to avoid seen. His parents read the headline again, a student allegedly. Calls enough of fake bomb threat to voice, his parents will looks like easy jet flight that was taking off in France had to be diverted last week because of fake bomb threat. So on January eighteenth, I'm easy flight flight from Leon to Rene as France was in the air when Thorens received an anonymous call and unanmous call this adjusted a bomb could be on board the plane. So after receiving that information the pilots returned to Lee on and thirties. Inspected the plane, but no bomb was found. So the local authorities there in Leon were investigating the call in said that the person behind the threat the person that was behind this bomb threat was a twenty three year old college student in Rene as France wonder, what is studying out there. So anyway, allegedly he didn't want his parents who were on the flight to visit him, according to a thority. So you would think you go about a maybe a different way. You know, maybe to say, hey, mom, dad. You know, it's not a good time. But I don't know what he's learning in school. But apparently he just didn't want spares to come and decided to contact the flight they were on in have a bomb threat issue to that plane. So it looks like the place took the suspect this kid it his parents show up into custody charged him with what they call false news. Compromising the safety of an aircraft in flight seems like a long charge there about something else that I probably can't talk about this pretty stupid. I should think twice about doing these things and maybe get to know your parents a little bit better, man. They need some counseling and therapy about being a better family talkative show put anyway, his court date is coming up in may. And if he's convicted there in France hoax are could face up to five years in prison in a fine of nearly eighty five thousand dollars says like he needs some psych. Ecological help to some family counselling. I'm sure now he's probably bit off more than he can chew and avoiding seen his parents. Well that could be up to five years in prison. So not very bright amazing. These news stories what these people are thinking today so much for college education too. So without a great day, find a little humor in that. It's gotta sad. But really the catch of the day this week really like reading this indictment this article from the department of Justice, but it reads like this. So it's a federal crackdown on financial fraud in ATM skimming that continues with a lot of guilty pleas. So out of Savannah, Georgia here. My home state to Brazilian nationals who use Bank customers account information obtained by an AT and skimming device have pled guilty of federal court. So it looks like this individual name Julio Lopez de Silva thirty eight years old pled guilty to one count of conspiracy to commit Bank fraud, while Anderson Santos forty one years of age pled guilty. To one count of aggravated identity theft and US district court there in Brunswick, Georgia said United States attorney Bobby Christine looks like Silva, the main guy faces up to thirty years in prison. Why Santos faces a mandatory two year sentence in fortunately for them? There's no parole in the federal system. These two were also Namus of timber in a six count indictment, alleging their participation in a scheme that involved placing card reading the vices on ATM's to capture customer information. And then using that information to encode blanked cards to withdraw substantial amounts of money. So after the men were arrested in savannah police searched a hotel nearby where the two were staying in discovered. Skimming equipment in nearly twenty thousand dollars in casts show, we're gonna talk a little bit more about the ATM skimming scheme in skimming devices equipment used by these bad guys. And also how? How do they get twenty thousand dollars in cash while you're probably thinking wasn't the credit card is people's debit cards? So different ways that they went about doing that. But this is good information to know as you share your knowledge inexperience with others to educate them about how credit card fraud, and how personal identities can be compromise through. Sometimes the easiest means. So it looks like the guilty pleas from dasilva and Santos. Follow similar recent cases, up and down this coastal area all involving foreign nationals operating illegal skimmer. So here again, big credit card fraud case bag is using skimmers and other other equipment to steal your identity and comme credit card fraud that our foreign nationals, obviously in this country illegally and sorta like a couple of other podcasts, we've had similar cases of foreign nationals, in some cases, you know, sort of like the Jason Bourne series. You probably saw him when he's traveling between countries. He's filing through a deck. A passport got all these different passports with different names, and everything, you know, trying to hide his identity wherever he goes. While this house, very similar here at a much larger scale, it doesn't go into details. But you can only imagine if perhaps this may be state sponsored fraud from foreign nationals coming into our country. So it looks like other bad guys, including a Romanian national play guilty in December where he was alleged to possess fifteen or more on authorize access devices and on now he faces up to ten years in prison. So welcome to America, pal. You know, think twice about you know, trying to counterfeit passports, come over here. Ciller densities our money. So the luck to you. But anyway, as article goes on there, several different names involved in this indictment that all part of the scheme to operate skimmers that stole customer formation at gas stations in these other visuals are now. In connected with this route arc human national. So I wonder how they're getting together. I guess maybe it's on social media, Facebook or something. Hey, what do you do next week? I got a skimming device or I got this. I got this stack of card stock aim. I need something imprint Amami it makes you wonder how this happens. But I know that all these bad guys communicate on the dark web and things like that. I guess birds of a feather flock together so lose these cases were actually investigated by the United States secret service. Oh, yeah. Way to go guys in local police departments around savannah, and in the coastal area of Georgia, according to the US attorney's office, and what they say there's these cases demonstrate this success in cooperative investigations of federal and local agencies that teamed up against those who would attempt to profit from fraud and theft. So said the district of Georgia US attorney, Bobby Christine Loh, he says a law enforcement agencies and prosecutors were all working together to find these. Criminals. No matter what their national origin was. And they have full intent to send them to prison, which is awesome. So one of the top priorities as you guys know, the secret service is they come back computer related crimes perpetrated by domestic and international criminals at target our financial infrastructure, so very important job that the secret service doesn't coordinated with local offers agencies and citizens just like you. So the secret service to also says that it conjunction with many retail forcement partners across the United States in the world. They continually are able to successfully combat these crimes by working closely together with experts in all the affected sectors to constantly refresh in adapter their investigation methodology. So we'll what are they saying say what we talked about quite a bit in a lot of go, the security conferences, a lot of different extra speak in law enforcement, and so forth about the importance of partner. Ship with not just other retailers and other merchants. But with that local law enforcement and local law enforcement is the first place, you go to establish that relationship, and from there, it can it can continue with the federal law enforcement agencies like the secret service, and if the eye so if you haven't done so ready, you know, had make contact with local law enforcement in your area in your local jurisdiction. There will be a day where you're gonna get upset enough. If you're having already to send your case file, your big fraud investigation to allow force officer an investigator, and they will work with you in conjunction perhaps with federal law enforcement. Authorities opinion them the magnitude and size of your fraud case to work together to to really put the bag is away. And isn't that what is all about? Isn't it time that we really turn the tables on the fraudsters? I mean here you have another example of foreign nationals in this case. Several different countries here from Brazil, and from Romania in from Cuba coming over here illegally to do one thing in this to defraud, you is still your money. And who knows what the scale of this is it could be state sponsored of fraud or organized crime from overseas. But whatever it is is important that we work together to identify the threat and work with local law enforcement to ruin their day. So

"Welcome to ruin back is Dave radio podcast with fraud expert skip buyers. This is your guide to fighting fraud and chargebacks learn the best fraud prevention solutions and strategies how to enhance your fraud prevention team and held on prosecute criminals. Now, here's your host skip buyers. Hello everyone. Welcome to route a bad guys day radio. Hey, I'm Scott Meyers on I'll be your host today. Hey, welcome back, as you know. I took a few days off our in our for the holidays. And and I'm happy to be back. Boy, there's a lot of news report. And hopefully, everyone has been changing their passwords and looking after data security, and how to protect your identity against those hackers while a lot of different breaches and hacks going on it just doesn't seem to end. Does it you know, I was talking about that in that last podcast. I had about when I was recently hack, my identity stolen, and yes, really that did happen that is still ongoing. And and here's soon I'll have another podcast update you with that latest information. So that's ongoing. But if you're saying, you know, this this data breach anon- continues to occur. And I said it again a few podcasts ago, it almost seems like every single week for sure every month. You know, this new news that comes out about another data breach. And his just amazing to me. And I'm sure a lot of you would agree that this continues to happen. What are companies really doing to protect themselves from a data breach? And in turn protect you or their customers from bad guys, stealing our densities getting out of control. So something more has to be done. And we'll discuss more of that later were here in the United States. Certain legislation has been approved through the Senate actually require businesses to do a lot more and also cover agencies to do more to protect your identity. So we'll talk about that. Again, a little later another podcast has these things developed, but today pretty much breaking news just a day or two go brand new information reported by wired dot com. And some of this podcast is related to the recent wire dot com article titled astonishing seven hundred and seventy three million wreck. Kurds exposed a Munster breach kale say that again, I didn't hear that. But this amazing and astonishing seven hundred and seventy three million records exposed in a monster breach. In here goes the article, so we're dissect nece and dive in deep and see what really is all about this recent hack, and what this article is telling us so starts off. There are breaches. And there are mega breaches. And then there's equifax, but a newly revealed trove of leak data tops all of them for sheer volume, and that's seven hundred and seventy three million records evolving you unique Email addresses or over twenty one million unique passwords all recently posted to a hacking forum to data set was first reported by security researcher by the name of Troy hunt. And some of you may know who Troy is Troy maintains the I have been pawn website. Is a website, which is a way to search whether or not your Email or password has been compromised by breach from any point. So we've talked about it in a couple podcasts where I have been pawned dot com is a great website to enter your Email address to see is on the dark web in see this ever been part of the data. Great. So we talked about this before in a podcast. Great place start out to see if your information has been hacked before. So I highly recommend using this site. So the question is really the so called collection number one. So this is the collection of one is the largest Breese and hunts menagerie of research in its in this particular, one is not particularly close they say, so the hack itself if anything the above numbers belied, the real volume of the breach as they refer reflect hunt's effort to clean up the data to set an account of duplicates and to strip out usable bits of information. So in rawal form. This information comprises two point seven billion rows of Email addresses two point seven billion rows of Email addresses. That is incredible and passwords including over a billion unique combinations of Email addresses and passwords so the trove of information appear briefly on mega which is a cloud service. It persistent on what hunt referred to as a poplar hacking forum. So it sat in this folder called collection. One which contained over twelve thousand files that weighed in over eighty seven gigabytes of information, I mean, that is massive eighty seven gigabytes of information in while is difficult at this time to confirm exactly all that info came from it appears to be something of a breach of riches. It's the granddaddy of them all the mother load of bridges that to say that it claims to aggregate over two thousand leaked databases that contain password. Woes protective hashing information was cracked. So you know is a breach of breaches so to speak. So it looks like a completely random collection of sites purely used a maximize number of credentials unveiled with the hackers hunt tells wired magazine, so or wire dot com in there's no obvious patterns is just include a maximum exposure of information. So he says something sort of the to the fact that this sort of voltron breach has happened before. But never never to this scale. In fact, only is this largest breach to become public. It is second only to ya. Who's pair of incidents which affected one billion three billion users respectively in size? So fortunately, the stolen. Yahoo. Data has it surfaced quite yet. So there's a big question Mark on that. So okay. So the big question is who is affected. Who's affected by this latest data breach of seven hundred seventy three million different
