"Awhile back the Democrats in the mainstream media we're about ready to impeach president trump because service members stayed overnight at his golf resort in Scotland it was quite the scandal and then it was not as a matter of fact merry a peep in the media and now we know why because there never was a scandal in the first place the airforce released a thirty page report on the matter from the beginning of two thousand fifteen through this August six hundred fifty nine air crews stayed at hotels near Scotland's Prestwick airport only six percent of the air crews stayed at the trump Turnberry and those six percent only stayed there because other accommodations were unavailable it turns out the president was not profiteering off the Air Force that's what they call in golf lingo all we have be sure to download my free time cast podcast at Todd Starnes dot com this is fox on justice would you put your life on the line for five dollars a day hundreds of people are doing that right now in California there prison inmates who volunteer to help battle the relentless wildfires in the state California corrections officials say about two thousand low security inmates have received training and are taking part in firefighting efforts they get paid but not much anywhere from less than three dollars to just over five dollars per day prisoners who work right on the fire lines make a little more plus they earn time off their sentences for each day they work some inmates say they like the work they're doing something good is better than being locked up plus they learn a skill but others complain fire departments make it nearly impossible for ex cons to join their ranks there's a bill in the California legislature that could change that but for now the priority for everyone is getting a handle on all the.

"The IRS to investigate the National Rifle Association to determine whether they should be stripped of their tax exempt status now that Wyden has issued the report that the NRA work with Russia to help them infiltrate our politics. That's the whole boot Anna torsion situation and all the trips that they paid for you know to get the NRA officials to go to Russia and and Jordan was reporting on this over the weekend on Sunday on Moshi row and the daily beans that came up Monday that you know the NRA that this report had come out on the unarmed saying that the NRA is a Russian asset basically and that goes against their five. Oh One C. four tax exempt status and so now they're officially calling with a letter for the irs to investigate their tax exempt status and this is a letter to the IRS Commissioner Charles Rag. WHO's a trump guy Ron Wyden from the sentence the Senate Finance Committee along with Chuck Schumer accused the NRA of failing to act as a social welfare organization and say they violated tax exempt rules tax exemption rules by profiting off of its activities? I doubt reading is GonNA. Do Anything we already know from a whistle blower in the IRS that the irs isn't performing the presidential tax tax audits according to that program's rules if the whistleblower complaint is true so he so it's funny. I feel like I've heard a lot what about how trump has sycophants in various organizations and agencies but I don't know what his relationship was with the irs yeah the IRS special counsel in the irs the Commissioner one of them owns trump properties and profits off of owning trump properties and the other was specially installed by trump ahead of bill bar Dr Felt it more important than his bill bar nomination and so fast track that nomination through the IRS commissioner for Rettig so so it's they are totally conflicted and not like golf course fees conflicted like literally they make money off the trump real estate or at least one of them does so. It's just it's really bad. It's about look and they they are you know not complying either with the House Ways and Means Committee subpoenas to the IRS to get trump tax returns which they have to by law. They're they're stalling and filing suit and the Treasury isn't helping either Steve Mnuchin of the Treasury is like like now we're not GONNA Steve. Steve kind of rap name is Steve. It's really frustrating because the NRA is not just you know working with with Russians so it alleges here but to also when the shooting happened at the Moscow New Zealand yeah there was NRA representatives who are reaching out to politicians Titians in New Zealand and people on the right in New Zealand asking them if they needed help pushing a pro gun agenda. I don't see how how I mean. Maybe it's because I'm so biased but I just don't even see how the NRA even if it was not profiting off of these he's kind of Russia things how their social welfare group that I just don't I can't. I can't put that together in my head. I guess it's a there's something to do with defending your freedoms your I I. It's going to be their argument protection amendment yeah a social welfare group be trying to limit the second amendment for the safety of Americans but a G. O. K. Freedom Freedom Fest. Yes I know I forgot forgotten. Can't forget about freedom isn't free. No there's a hefty firkin feet and if you don't pitch in your buck oh five who will okay sir. I need to watch that now. I need to go watch that team. America world police if you haven't seen it. It's talk puppets very good in it. okay. WE'RE GONNA shift gears here a little bit kind of a content warning actually definitely content warning about it's it's just a lot of heavy shit in this so if you know if you're not into heavy shit today maybe fast forward about. MINNESO- but we have a story from rewire that migrant Agra mothers are having their newborn babies taken away from them and handed over to the Texas Department of Family and protective services right after they give birth and additionally pregnant migrants don't receive adequate care when they're getting prenatal and postnatal care many are shackled some mothers or even shackled during childbirth and some others have had their babies taken away from them and then they've been returned to like the mothers just returned to custody and rewire says the the women who find help with advocacy groups appear to be reunited with their babies but it's unclear what happens to families and mothers that don't have access to legal assistance so they're literally bring these mothers in shackling doing them. They're giving birth. They're taking the baby giving it to the Texas Department of Child Protective Services or protective custody or whatever and then sending the mother back to custody at least in some cases. I have two points one is this is such a visit. This is an American classic if you will like before it was a showing up taking white people as in the way people showing up and taking the babies of people of Color. We're doing the same thing that people who are trying to booth here sure so that's good my second point is we discussed this yesterday. After learning about the horrible trump story about the kind of border wall he wanted to have an how horrific it was and this story about all these Margaret Mothers just again donate to organizations or or give your time or even your social media support to the organizations nations who are helping the micro and the refugees at the border acl you. There's a bunch this is this we've obviously there's been so much happening with impeachment and stuff. If that like these stories have started to become have taken up less of the airwaves and as presidential candidates have discussed other things but this is still happening in it's still super urgent and Yeah Yep so that's just horrific a- I'm still reeling from the store you were mentioning Amanda yesterday about the moats filled with alligators and shooting migrants in the legs to slow them down and flesh piercing spikes and snakes and it's just it's absolutely a AH it's horrible. It's horrific. Yeah I mean also as someone who used to work for a large human rights organization two of them it's really the idea that people who are illegally seeking asylum or having their children taken away from them and are potentially unable to reunite their children unless given especially especially for people who don't speak English getting access to the legal counsel. They need who have no money. I mean what's happening to them has been inhumane for a while but this rams ramps up to a whole other level. It seems like every day he could. The trump administration Stephen Miller properly in particular comes up with a new way like when they tried to deport the migrants parents that were having lifesaving health treatments here. Just you go home. you know sorry you'll probably die. Go home or I mean. It's just daily. It's just it happens on the daily and so and then of course bill bar comes out and says that judges shouldn't be allowed to just file injunctions with impunity like he wants basically because trump everything trump does get shutdown between the legal and so that's bad that judges can do that. No that's good that we have a separate branch checking and balancing branch. It's called it's part of the Constitution as part of the checks and balances. It's in there and it's important so yeah but he wants is to shut that shit down so that's interesting all right so that's some sad news but now here's a little shot in Friday so despite the bad news there's a silver lining today the trump organizations plan for a major expansion of its golf resort in Scotland called turnberry. Sorry which we've heard a bunch on the news lately they wanted to build swallows of luxury villas they had plans but they've been rejected did by planners at a Scottish local authority even better. Is that trump's son Eric Eric was personally overseeing the blueprints. That's primarily got shut down. Give give it to Eric he was overseeing the blueprints for new housing and enlisted architects to help rezone the agricultural land for real estate development so this B- All this beautiful land there in Scotland is zoned for agriculture but the planners at the Scottish local authority rejected the plans by refusing to reclassify the farmland for housing housing. They say quote are Planning Department have advised that the sites were assessed against a range of environmental and planning criteria alongside other alternative native site submissions made in response to the mail issues report consultation. It was concluded that they should not be recommended for release. This all comes as the house. you know you how stems are investigating. US military payments at the turnberry resort and of course the nearby Prestwick airport both which have been propped up by US Air Force visits it's in refueling military refueling so all probably in violation of the domestic emoluments clause having lived but in the UK for seven years before I moved to California I'm taking like great joy at the idea of a bunch of angry little old Scottish ladies sitting around their local authority meeting voting against trump. I know they're a tiny rebellion. I love today trump no all right so let's get social sadly the Hashtag trending today Amber Geiger We spoke too soon yesterday. Saying justice had been served when they found her guilty of murder. We should have waited until she was sentenced because that happened today. She was facing life in prison and she got ten years it ten years for a wondering someone's house and murdering him. Yes cool. "So to be clear. Mr Trump has no financial relationships with any Russian oligarchs with what he said. That's what I said. That's obviously with our position is. I'm not aware we're almost any of those. Activities are have been called a surrogate at a time material in that campaign and I didn't have I have communication with the Russians and what do I have to get involved with Putin for have nothing to do with Putin. I've never spoken to him. I don't know anything about her mother than he will. Respect me Russia. If you're listening. I hope you're you're able to find the thirty thousand emails that are missing so it is political your communist know Mr Green Green Communism is just a red herring like all members of the oldest profession Emma capitalist hello and welcome to Muller. She wrote I'm your host. Ag and with me today Jordan Coburn hello and Amanda Reader Hello and this is the final episode of our special coverage of the redacted Muller report. Wow yeah yeah wow nineteen weeks crazy. That's fucking a lot of time. It is a lot a lot of time and a lot of roads but well worth the coverage. I think this will definitely live on into eternity past. You know being able to keep my head alive so tastic. Ask Jab thank you. I'll save all the niceties for the end when it's officially over O. Onnell. Thank you to later but not now. We'll see how you do no. I'm kidding well. We'll be covering sections three and four in volume two as well as the back matter over that a little bit. That's pages one fifty nine to one eighty two plus. It's the appendices and this is perfect timing as we are wrapping up the mole report here at the end of September two thousand nineteen we are now moving into formal impeachment hearings announced by Nancy. NC policy the speaker of the House this week the more investigate yesterday. We had cocktail party. It was good we made a impeachment Rum Punch. It was delicious but the more investigation covered Russian election interference in two thousand sixteen and Trump's campaign campaigns role in that along with the obstruction of justice or the trump Russia and obstruction investigations. He actually obstructed the obstruction investigation but now these impeachment proceedings are focused on trump's interference in the two thousand twenty election had he only successfully got in court it Corey Lewandowski to get sessions to recuse himself to limit the scope of the Muller Investigation to future elections. We might be looking at this but it's it's all coming out at a very quick clip and so now we're looking at twenty twenty election interference with a whistleblower complaint found credible by the intelligence community inspector factor general that trump pressured Ukraine to investigate his leading political opponent in two thousand twenty Joe Biden who's still leading but not in every State no Elizabeth Warren is leading in a few states now yep and I think she's crushed at an Iowa which is an important one to crush it in but indeed we we were wrapping up twenty sixteen investigation and now we're looking forward to the twenty twenty timing right. It really is a beautifully seamless transition right. Now that's happening yeah. Our timing has been really really crazy. We had to live Largo show the day day. The Mullahs report came out. We're going to be in Boston in November. That's right two days address seven after stones trial begins and it's also the same day that we get to hear the Flynn hearing on we know with Sydney. Pal has new crazy lawyer. It's just Ri. Everything is time time so we couldn't have written it better. honestly. I mean we couldn't butter by like not electing trump but yet here we are so in the best silver linings so section three in volume two are the legal defenses to the application of obstruction of justice laws to the president of the United States is basically muller objecting to trump's lawyers assertions that a core obstruction action of justice statute which is eighteen. US Code Section Fifteen Twelve C two does not apply to trump's actions that is trump can't obstruct justice by closing an obstruction investigation or firing the FBI director because of his powers under the constitution so muller concluded this assertion is bullshit and he bases that conclusion on the framework of Supreme Court precedent addressing the separation of powers under that Framework Muller explains here in section three that article to the Constitution does not immunize the president resident from liability for his conduct and going a step further muller asserts that the obstruction of justice laws prohibit the president's corrupt efforts to use his official powers to curtail and or interfere with an investigation and Muller splits his defense of that conclusion into two sections the statutory defense and the constitutional defense so yeah he's variable defense very organized yeah hell yeah so section eight covers the statutory defences to Muller's application of obstruction of justice provisions to trump's conduct and that begins on page one sixty so first muller tells us what eighteen USC Section Fifteen C two states. It says whoever corruptly otherwise obstructs influences impedes any official proceeding or attempts to do so shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than twenty years or both about twenty years. I'll take twenty asking. That sounds good to me. and you could find but he doesn't have any money. You'd have to take it out of Prestwick airport. Turnberry so ah you know for future reference if you're listening in twenty-fifty trump has a deal with prestwick airport near turnberry where he's been allowing the air force to stay basically asleep benefiting him personally so this here the counters this whole thing about you know impeding official proceedings or attempts to do so shall be fined under this title title this counter is one of the Republicans main arguments and that's that you must have an underlying crime and that you have to successfully obstruct justice to be guilty of criminal obstruction of justice more. Moeller explains here in these pages that the Department of Justice has taken the position that section to here is broad. It's independent unqualified and courts meaning. It's not you know. WHOA it doesn't rely on other parts of itself and courts have so interpreted it that way particularly the word or in the sentence whoever ever correctly otherwise obstructs influences or impedes any official proceeding or three attempts to do so yeah. That's what he's saying. The verbiage the ruthless gives statute of broad umbrella covering all these obstructive acts right because it's or not and you don't have to do all these things more than addresses the word otherwise in whoever corruptly otherwise obstructs points out that this word otherwise untethered these behaviors from the behaviors in section one and the behaviors and section one fifteen twelve c one say whoever corruptly alters destroys mutilates conceals a record document or other object or attempts to do so with the intent to impair the objects integrity equity or availability for use in official proceeding. I'm looking forward to them using that against William Barr with this whole Ukraine thing hopefully hats me as well and it's untethered to the other kinds of obstruction obstruction basically muller saying you don't have to destroy evidence and attempt to influence or impeded preceding it's just either or and all the language in these sections are standalone crimes under the statute and none relies on the other to be true for the president to be guilty of obstruction of justice. That's basically what Muller's laying out here and in subsection two on page one and sixty two molar talks about the judicial decision that supports his reading of the Law Muller sites about a dozen cases here that support his analysis of the obstruction of justice statutes so he's basically saying the obstruction of justice law is good and there's nothing wrong with it. There's not any holes in it. It's well established. Here's a Shitload of case law and It's very broad. It's been determined to be broad and on page one sixty four molar than sites the Legislative Asleep History of fifteen twelve c. two and how it does not narrow the scope of law either and on page sixty five says the general principles of Statutory Construction Instruction do not indicate the application of the law is incorrect and trump's case so he's he says the law is good and it applies here in this section muller sites case flaw asserting the requirement of fair warning due process and the rule of Leonardy and those do not justify narrowing the reach of the obstruction of Justice Flos so I the fair warning requirement involves the nexus part of the obstruction law you know those three criteria and as we know in order to be a criminal construction you have to have the obstructive act next to an official proceeding and intent and regarding the next piece the court has imposed a nexus test it requires the obstructive act to be connected sufficiently to an official proceeding to ensure culpability so the government must show as an objective matter that the obstructive act was likely likely to obstruct justice and not define it doesn't cover defendants who would use you know means that would unnaturally rim probably be successful so like if trump threw a shoe at muller's car. That's not that's. He's not expecting that to be able to impede an investigation especially if the windows those were up you know so objectively it has to make sense objectively has to make sense and then additionally the second part. Here's the government must show subjectively that the actor contemplated completed a particular foreseeable proceeding the fact that the government has to show those two things alleviates the fair warning concerns because showing both of those things ensures the conduct has a close enough connection to existing or future proceedings to implicate the dangerous targeted by obstruction laws so fair warning basically means a law must must define an offense with enough accuracy so a reasonable person would understand what conduct is prohibited that they're crying so muller is saying that because the government must prove approve nexus objectively and subjectively the statute is well defined yes essentially you wouldn't be being so defensive. If you knew what you were doing was an okay yeah. He's he's basically Lisa. There's enough words in this law for your dumb ass to understand that it's illegal what you're doing right so the fair warning is innate basically yeah it's it's alleviated by the simple existence of the verbiage of the law and then the due process concerns which also requires a lot to be definite enough that ordinary people oh can understand what conduct is criminal. That's offering someone due process and Muller asserts the language in the law that requires the defendant the defendant to act corruptly satisfies the concerns over over the vagueness of due process he then cites a bunch of case law that defines what it means to act corruptly so basically Miller saying we have a very well established definition of corrupt or corruptly as supported by this case law and since we have a definite meaning for corruptly we can assuage the concerns of due process vagueness so these these this Leonardy the law and due process and the first thing what was it the Mer Mer I just we just talked about it. Landy Fair warning so fair warning due process and Leonardy those are all things that could make the the law seem vague but he saying that well defined formulas law the way that we have to apply nexus to illegal proceeding make alleviates the fair warning part and the way that we understand that you know you you're due process concerns or allayed by the fact that corruptibility is very well defined in the law as well and so that alleviates that vagueness. I think it's interesting that he's like attaching in the alleviation of these vagueness concerns within the law to specific requirements in the obstruction statutes freight. Why would he put this in in in less his intentions were anything other than for Congress to take this and do something with it. It's that but it's also to say that because trump's lawyers were arguing that he's above this law right yeah also trying to use a little the quote unquote vagueness or the wording of the law to be slippery and Muller's Muller's like you can't. It's like you're going to try to do that but it's too obvious right you know and and that was born out in the fact that he didn't charge junior with campaign finance violations a regarding the June ninth trump tower Megan's Raya thing yeah because he didn't have wasn't willful and knowing enough to be corrupt and so had he charged him with that somebody might have been able to you know appeal this this on the whole due process.

"Welcome back. We have an update for you on all things turnberry and joining joining us now is the reporter that broke the story for Politico Natasha Bertran Natasha welcome. How are you thanks for having me. I'm good good so so what's the latest and greatest on the on the turnberry a scandal so we learned from the House Oversight Committee last week that the Pentagon had finally gotten back to them with with numbers and documents relating to how much money they've actually spent at trump's resorts since about August of twenty seventeen turns town it was quite a lot certainly a lot more visits and a lot more money spent than you know just though one layover back in March that we initially thought aught this had been so turns out they'd spent the equivalent equivalent of about thirty six north of thirty six stays at trump turnberry since August and spence close to two hundred thousand dollars not all of what the House Oversight Committee wanted from the Pentagon on they really wanted more documents and they want an exact breakdown for example of how many rooms the military had reserved at the resort but it's something and before two weeks ago. We didn't even know this was happening. Let alone that it had happened almost forty times he yeah and and and so what do you say about you know there's all these other kinds of stories that have been popping up around that they had a deal at the Prestwick airport in two thousand fourteen and that's under Obama aw and the these kinds of stays were happening while Obama was president also but there's a distinct difference here right yeah so I think it's important to to remember that while the airport how to refueling contract with the Defense Department in two thousand sixteen that didn't automatically Matichon translate obviously to the US military staying at turnberry and even if it did it wouldn't necessarily have been a conflict of interest because President Obama didn't own turnberry so so trump gets elected. Obviously it becomes more of a question of whether this is a violation of the constitution because trump owns the resort the military's Terry's obviously pouring federal money taxpayer money into this property essentially keeping it afloat in many ways and the president president has not fully divested himself from his businesses allowing him to withdraw money from his businesses really at any point so you get the situation where the domestic domestic emoluments clause which prevents you know the the federal government from giving the president any money other than his salary could be violated by this arrangement. That's why the Air Force now is doing an internal review and figuring out whether the optics of this at the very least are something that should prevent them from continuing this practice in the future he I was going to bring that up. That's kind of I think what was important at the Air Force at least upfront admitted to that the appearance and the optics are bad regardless of you know whether there's money spent but I mean it seems as though it's a violation of the domestic emoluments clause if if even even a dime is spent I mean I know that that's petty but you know a couple hundred thousand dollars a couple hundred thousand dollars is pretty significant and this is just one corner of the Air National Guard of the Air Force or are they looking at all of military usage of trump hotels. Yes good question you know. We don't know the answer to that. We have been trying. Did you get the inspector general to tell us whether or not they've launched an internal review just the entire military and to see whether this happening on a more broad basis quote. We haven't gotten an answer to that but you know it is possible that other units in the military are doing this as well because a lot at the time the air force is actually ferrying people over and carrying a lot of different units with them and and different passengers so it's not necessarily isolated it. Just the Air Force and I think what we also have to remember is that you know this is not something happening. In a vacuum. The President President Vice President stayed at trump's resort recently while he was going to Ireland and his meetings were hundreds of miles away and he decided to stay Gordon kind of horror money into into that and of course trump mused about hosting the g seven of his drought property in Miami so it's clearly become a pattern and this I think is alarming because we expect the military I think to be above above anything that even looks partisan in that way and that's why we got so many tips about this from members of the military from Air Force crew members were like this is weird. This hasn't usually happened. It hasn't happened for this doesn't usually happen. Maybe you should look into it because they themselves internally. We're like what's going on yeah. Don't you mean the G. Eight Natasha. I'm sorry eh but it's the G. Eight run Russia so yeah because you had reported in one of your earlier pieces when this story was just breaking that turn very very went from like a a four million in the red to three million in the black or vice versa. I can't remember which and I'm I'm dying to know how much of this is attributed to to these kinds of things things and if it and whether or not trump is even getting a cut of the prestwick contract because he's helping keep them afloat. At least you know since and who knows maybe since before he took office. That would be all speculation though right now but it's a good question I mean we we obviously haven't reported that. The military is is really the driving force behind that jumped in revenue but the military did acknowledge to us on background that the Air Force did anyway that they wouldn't be surprised if they were to embarrassing largest customer because they're repeat customer of they've spent hundreds of thousands of dollars there and sure the resort might get more revenue from other sources might get more revenue from like a golf tournament they hosted or whatever but this in terms of being a single largest customer the Air Force had yeah that would make logical sense. We were shocked by that. We were like you know. How are you hiring freely just kind of saying that that seems like a really big deal but I think that they're kind of here. Yeah I think when it comes to speaking to us they are trying to normalize his as much as possible and trying to you make it seem like it's not out of the ordinary but that's contradicted by you know senior members of the airforce who have actually told us like this this first of all the fact that they're staying at. Prestwick so often is kind of unusual and second of all the turnberry stays are out of the ordinary so we don't know yet the exact breakdown of of the numbers in terms of what how much is actually how how much of this is actually keeping turnberry afloat but it's certainly a lot more than we knew a couple of weeks ago. He and I'd also certainly be interested to know like how far up in the chain of command the approvals approvals for these days were granted because you know I I I've worked with the military and I've been in the military and these things sometimes don't get up to the you know the the the the top brass so it'd be interesting to see where that buck stopped as well yeah and we've heard different things about that. You know some air force crew members have told us well well. You know I've heard stories about you know some mission commanders just wanting to land there and wanting to stay at turnberry and being able to kind of book that themselves through the defense travels to stem then we've heard others say the Air Mobility Command actually booked it for them than we've heard still others say that they were instructed to go turnberry so I think it does vary but there's also a question of okay like who's approving this at the highest levels because there's going to be an option rate and if there was a wink in from the White House to allow this to happen kind of encouraged to happen. That's obviously going to be a big problems in the military. Yeah that's amazing because I've booked through the defense travel system in it's absolutely ridiculous how many hoops you have to jump through and. I'm surprised if you tried to selected to Durell or turnberry window doesn't pop up and say sorry this violates the constitutional domestic emoluments clause. You'RE GONNA have to pick another hotel and end the difference travel office or office something like Office of Defense Travel. I can't remember the exact name but the office it essentially acts like the internal travel agency they were willing to talk to us and they're willing to give us you know a whole interview kind of on background but at the very last minute they said sorry we. I have been told by the higher ups that wall. This review is ongoing. We can't run for damn it all right well. Thanks so much for the update. I really appreciate it Everyone Natasha Bertrand from politico. Thank you and as predicted last week. Joe Kennedy announced his run for Senate Saturday morning so hey beans come true he's way out of the polls in Massachusetts versus primary opponent Marquis who has been endorsed by ABC. We will stay on top of that race for you and mark. Kelly is leading in Arizona to take mcq. Sally's seat MIC. Sally Alley was beaten by Kirsten Cinema. A Democrat mcsally is a Republican and then after McCain's passing Doug Ducey which is it's actually Doug Ducey. The governor of Arizona appointed the loser MC Sally to take McCain seat until the next election so he's already beating pretty handily. This would be the first time in my lifetime. The Arizona had two democratic senators. That's exciting. I think they can do it. It's kind of my home state a man born from yeah born from Cleveland. I'm born. I'm born from the land of cleve leave. I came to Zona air the here I lived when sports for Awhile Sorry yeah I spent fourteen years though very formative years third grade through Sophomore Year of college so totally. I didn't lie Al Gore on why he supports impeachment. The only remedy for these and serious crimes that have been alleged is the impeachment process fivethirtyeight silver on just what is happening with Elizabeth Warren. Does your all in starts right now good evening from National Tennessee. I'm Chris Hayes. The president of the United States operates a Byzantine set of nested businesses whose finances totally opaque each of which presents a conflict of interest at best and at worst presents standing opportunities for bribes. This is a problem that hangs over everything the president does up to and including the single most important decision a president can make whether to engage the country in war with the president vowing that he is locked and loaded voted to go to war on behalf of the Saudi Kingdom a bombshell report today now represents the third time that we know of solely through reporting that Saudis have dumped upped enormous amounts of money into trump's properties. Thanks to the Washington Post David Farren Hold Jonathan O'CONNELL. We know the Saudis spent a significant sum of the trump international hotel in Manhattan in March of two thousand eighteen even though the royal family didn't actually stay there the trump hotel didn't have sweets big enough off to accommodate them. No they stay on the other side of the Central Park at the Plaza Hotel but that's Saudi contribution. The number of rooms they booked for the duration mattered so much that the hotel's tells general manager told investors that after two years of decline revenue from room rentals increased thirteen percent in the first three months of two thousand eighteen. Thanks is to quote a last minute visit to New York by the Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia. Would you look at that thanks to another scoop by Farren Holden O'CONNELL. We also learned learned saudi-funded. Lobbyists paid for an estimated five hundred rooms at trump's. DC Hotel in the months following his election. They describe an elaborate and bizarre effort it to stop Congress from passing a bill that would hold Saudi Arabia legally responsible for nine eleven now the latest on trump's turnberry golf resort in Scotland political. I broke broke the story about taxpayer money flowing into that resort about ten days ago now today. We get this quote earlier this summer. According to a staffer a group of Saudi royal's stayed at the resort for about a week at the tail end of extended travel bringing a party of twenty five people and more than one hundred pieces of luggage inch here that to repeat a group of Saudi royals brought twenty-five people to trump's Scottish golfers work for a week and that is just what we know reporting we also know the turnberry was a place that previously reported that the resort lost money in two thousand seventeen but revenue went up three million dollars last year according to politico so how did that happen that is only part of the corruption we already know. Enormous amounts of money are putting the president's pocket by going down tomorrow Lago with his entire security retinue. We also know that Mike Pence made this improbable journey to trump's Dune big resort in Ireland which is three hours from Dublin where he had his meetings. Politicos Natasha Bertrand previously reported that an Air National Guard crew stayed at turnberry on both legs of trip from the US to Kuwait at taxpayer expense. Let's now today's political report says quote a five day visit determine berry and the surrounding region revealed the regular visits from Air Force crews on layovers from Prestwick airport have become a major facet of the life of the resort it also revealed that rather than being restricted single fooling stops some visits last multiple nights expanding ending the known dimensions of the relationship between the president's luxury resort and the US military every cent of public money. The military spends at trump's properties is essential public dollars that is being put into the president's pocket we still almost no idea the extent to which money for American taxpayers and money from foreign governments with agendas is going directly into the president's bank account joining now one of the reporters who broke the trump turnberry story the aforementioned Natasha Bertrand turn political national security correspondent and MSNBC CONTRIBUTOR Natasha. You've been on this from the beginning of the first scoop on it. Walk me through the trajectory. What did we first learn. What have we learned on since we first heard word that the air force had lodged at least one crew in March of this year and we thought okay that's a little little bit weird we went to the air force and we continue to report out that story after we got confirmation that in fact this air force crew and route to Kuwait had stayed at turnberry three on both legs of their trip now since then we have learned that this is obviously a recurring experience for the air force they are continuing to spend money at trump's trump's resort when they do layovers at the small airport called. Prestwick airport just outside of turnberry while they're doing refueling etc so this has happened about forty the times now and what we learned from our colleague. Ben Trek and Ben Challenger going over to turnberry to report on the ground on this is that that forty each stay figure might be a little bit misleading because they're not just staying for one night at a time a lot of them are actually staying for multiple nights while they're playing get service which of course is even even more difficult at Prestwick airport because it's not a US military base so you're having to bring in technicians to deal with these planes. Meanwhile you have the Air Force crews lodging at turnberry. I'm very for multiple nights and playing golf. They're buying food. They're going to the bar so all of that money you know particularly because the president never fully divested from his businesses and I think that that's a really important point we have to remember could be flowing back into the president's pocket and it's certainly helping keep the resort afloat because the US Air Force actually acknowledged to us that they wouldn't be surprised at all and it would make complete sense if they were trump turnberry largest customer at this point. They said that yes on background. they acknowledged to us that it wouldn't be surprising to them that they don't have the exact figures but that it would not be it would be logical for are people to assume that they are the largest single customer from the resort and this is a resort. We should be clear that has had some trouble I mean it was it was a money losing property and that money losing using has turned around correct and you know we don't know if that's solely because of the US military spending there because of course once the president became the president more people of course would flocked is resorts specially foreign money as we saw with with our reporting this morning foreign money flowing into his properties and Saudi lobbyists in the Saudis themselves have spent thousands of dollars since he was elected so we whether or not it's actually just the US military we don't know and it's probably pretty unlikely but but the fact that they are perhaps the single biggest customer as they told us recently is is pretty jarring you also your colleague also in going there reported about this this this trip by Saudis which which to me is quite significant because again. We have no way of peering into this. We have no way of looking at the records. We don't know which foreign governments or spending what amounts of money in what pro-trump properties in general we just see little snippets from reporting we had two previous stories of huge. Saudi expenditures are trump hotels and now it appears. We have a third at turnberry as well right. That's exactly right these things. Just keep trickling out and we had no idea for example that this massive group of Saudis had stayed stayed there. I mean we had no idea that the US air force had been doing this for the last three years right so I mean the the more that people I think realize that this is not normal all that we never had this issue before because the president didn't divest from his businesses and now owns the properties that so many of these entities are are patronizing is leading reporters to new leads in new tips about these things and you know for if we're thinking about the impact that the Saudis have had perhaps on US foreign policy as a result of their going to trump's properties and hotels and resorts etc.. I mean we just have to go back to the very beginning when you know Saudi Arabia was the first country foreign country that trump visited when he became president and of course now we're seeing with his defensive of Saudi Arabia in the Iran conflict and I would also note that if hypothetically you were attempting adding to use your patronage of a business as a way of currying favor and sending kind of bribe you would have to bake it large enough that will work its way up the chain of a hotel night here or there air twenty-five people for a week. That's the kind of thing that might work. Its way up the chain that people would hear about that and this is also trough offense tweets well. I don't need the money from a single. Stay at a hotel or you know. I'm way beyond that well. Obviously this is not that. This is a recurring. This is a recurring hiring thing. It's a pattern and foreign entities have obviously figured out that it's a way for to get themselves on the president's radar. It's not just the Saudis the Qataris and of course now we're learning that it could be a violation could be violating the domestic emoluments clause with federal money that is not the president salary flowing into his businesses right. Natasha version great reporting on this keep at thank you very much joining me now Democratic Senator Gary Peers in Michigan. He's the ranking member of the Senate Homeland Security Committee also members of the Senate Armed Services Services Committee just yesterday interest to build a stop the federal government for spending any taxpayer dollars the property's owned by the president. Tell me about that piece of legislation well Chris. It's the hotel act which really would bar federal money from going to hotels that are owned by high ranking government officials including the President President Vice President or cabinet secretaries. Certainly my job is the ranking member of Homeland Security Government where the top oversight committee for the United States Senate Senate. My job is to make sure taxpayer. Money is being spent the way it's intended and not currying favor or used basically to line the pockets of the president or another high ranking official thirty. Five of my colleagues have joined with me on this legislation. We're hoping to move it open to talk with some of my colleagues in the House as well but clearly the conflicts of interest the misuse of taxpayer money. All of those issues are very serious issues and that we need to deal with when you say thirty five colleagues imagining that thirty-five Democrats that's correct. It seems to me Prima Facia obvious that just should not be the case that any public money is being spent in the private businesses of the President United States over and above whatever the security retinue brings onto mar-a-lago which itself is problematic like. Do you think this is the kind of legislation the house would take up and pass. I certainly hope so. This is very straightforward. As you mentioned this should not be going on the legislation does to create some exceptions as you mentioned for security staff so if the president said Mara Largo and he has secret service so they certainly need to be close to him so we'll deal with that but you certainly don't need to have what what we are apparently seeing in Scotland where you have air force crews staying at the hotel not likely the lowest cost hotel in the area and staying there for multiple days so that's why I've requested the from the Department of Defense to do a detailed study of what exactly is happening so we can get a better handle this. We need to get the facts. Have you gotten response from the on that. I haven't talked to him directly. I did talk to the Air Force. I G who has also started. Investigation had a long talk with him last week. He seems to have a pretty comprehensive study in the works but I'm going to be working closely with him and hopefully we'll have all those results fairly quickly. You're on the Senate Oversight Committee for your on Senate Armed Services. Did you know this was happening. Do Do people on Capitol Hill Know No. That was the case that the air force was when they were stopping at Prestwick which we should note predate this president it was a deal that was signed to use that airport. They were sending sending air force crews to the president's own hotel property. No no I certainly had no knowledge. I don't know of any of my colleagues. That knew that the hotel is further away from the airport as well. It's a it's a very fancy golf resort. You know I served in the Navy Reserve. I spent time part of my training in places overseas as the military put up in hotels but I guarantee you. They were not golf resorts that I stayed at. Do you think that we should have some comprehensive accounting of it. All at some point I suppose the president's tax returns but it just seems to me not a crazy ask as a matter of congressional oversight transparency and democracy just to have an actual sum total of how much this is happening which foreign governments are spending money in the president's hotels and how many public public federal employees are I think so and that's this we'll see what happens with the IDC report related to what's happening at Prestwick turnberry but certainly early we need to be looking at other areas where federal agencies or folks in the Federal Government Mayfield they need to do this in order to curry favor the president it clearly is the appearance of conflict of interest if not an outright conflict of interest.

"You'll put five dollars in the pocket of teacher somewhere somewhere who needs it. Try it use the COPEPOD safe. What are you waiting for. Thank you okay. I am joined by China Tasha Bertrand Politicos national security correspondent and a contributor for NBC News and MSNBC. She recently broke the story about air. Force stays at trump's turnberry very resort earlier this month and Tasha. Thanks doing the show. Thanks for having me so you were the first to report on these air force crews staying at trump's fancy fancy turnberry golf resort in Scotland. Why are these stays so a typical in your view yeah so we we got a tip from someone who was essentially in their mind kind of acting like a whistleblower here saying that you know they had never experienced experienced this particular flight that they took over in March from the US to the Middle East that they had never experienced a stopover in a Scotland and that the stopover that they had at the airport nearby trump's resort was in and of itself unusual for that particular trip and then and of course the stay at trump turnberry resort was extremely bizarre for them as well because it would be outside of their per diem rates in terms of the the food and you know even the cost of the day that the air force now disputes that so one of the big questions I think that stems from this is whether it's obviously a violation of the domestic emoluments clause which prevents the president from accepting any federal money outside of his salary and and that is what the House Oversight Committee has has been investigating for the last several months they wrote a letter to the Pentagon in June asking you know whether this was an isolated incident weather there were more occasions of the US Air Force lodging at trump's turnberry resort and route to the Middle East and they never got a reply and they gave the Pentagon deadline in last week of of last Friday. We don't know whether they've heard back but you know since we reported on that one trip in March. We've gotten additional information and learned that it's been about forty times that the air force has done this so another key part of this story is at the Air Force crews were refueling planes at Prestwick airport. that's a nearby airport turnberry believe Prestwick airport actually received its first air force contract in two thousand fifteen which is obviously during the Obama administration creation but it does seem like I I don't pretend to understand how the Department of Defense procures things like fuel and whatever whatever else but do you have any sense of why the Air Force would wanNA refuel at that airport versus other options presumably where you might be able to have discounted fuel. Yes it's a great question and this is one of the reasons why the person who reached out to us was so concerned about this because usually they refuel at US military bases right and Germany or Spain or Italy wherever has the space for them essentially what the air force has been telling us is that in an effort to kind of consolidate their operations in Europe and and kind of you know work down there stops at military bases and you know as they're kind of you know decreasing general activity over there. They've forged should these partnerships with commercial airports in order to just for convenience. Sake have a have a place to refuel on these missions. What we don't know is is whether these commercial contracts are happening elsewhere. Why prestwick in particular was selected when there's a military base right nearby in England that isn't necessarily very crowded and that the air force has used several that has continued to use even with this contract with Prestwick and you know how much more expensive it is actually for them to be refueling there because they get it costs a lot more for them to do that rather than refuel and and have technical maintenance provided to the planes at a US military base and of course the significance of Prestwick is that it was on the verge of bankruptcy until the Scottish government mm-hmm and bought it for a pound back in twenty thirteen and it is the closest airport trump's resort so if that airport fails then trump's resort could could really suffer so there's a symbiotic relationship there that is also kind of raising eyebrows among critics yeah. I mean this whole thing so confusing because I believe turnberry was in pretty dire financial interestrates at one point as well. I don't know how it's doing now because obviously the president that states visas to provide any financial information but so it seems bizarrely coincidental the dental that suddenly you would see air force crews staying at trump's resort. You'd see the air force sending people to this random airport in Scotland which doesn't really seem like it's on the way to wherever these folks are going but it also happened. The refueling happened in Twenty fifteen so I'm just I've been really struggling with how to understand. This and I don't know any tips for people who haven't followed it as closely as you yeah. I think the most important thing to keep in mind is that this contract was assigned under the Obama Administration in terms of the air force and the refueling this particular airport but that doesn't necessarily mean that the air force had to stay at trump's resort. You're right there are a lot of hotels in between Prestwick airport and trump turnberry where the air force could have been lodging their crews once trump took office and it became him a conflict of interest a clear you know potential boon for the president and for the struggling resort that Obama wasn't it didn't didn't matter for Obama because he doesn't own turnberry so I think the conflict here and which is what the Air Force has actually reviewing the internal review last week and what the House Oversight Committee Committee has been investigating is whether this is a violation of the constitution and short of that whether it's just an ethical lapse weather whether the perception that the US military is enriching the president and providing a lifeline to the struggling resort is something that they can justify to the American taxpayers tax payers who are ultimately footing this bell yeah so you mentioned that the Air Force today that a probe of this issue I think they've found that crusade at turnberry up to forty times James. The oversight committee is now investigating turnberry. Do you know like how long those investigations will take in. What kind of public disclosure there will be a based on under findings? We have no idea I mean we know that the air force is still in the middle of their review and so they're not giving us a breakdown for example of how many times the Air Force has stayed at turnberry since trump took office and they haven't given us a breakdown exactly of the costs and you know how much expires are actually paying for this and what hotels were unavailable available or really the justification for them essentially being turnberry biggest customer at this point the oversight committee has been investigating eating but they asked the Pentagon for documents by Friday as I mentioned earlier but they haven't to our knowledge gotten anything back so it could be right now. It's an independent investigation into US military expenditures at and around trump's property in Scotland and other properties but it could be wrapped into the overall corruption investigation that the house is doing and if we see that of course then it's going to drag on for a while as this becomes more involved in the overall impeachment proceedings yeah the the mid on again off again impeachment proceedings that were maybe doing. Maybe not to mention to you. Ask Them. What's right so we're seeing. What were we saw today? From Nadler's Adler is that the house judiciary chairman that he believes that trump should be impeached and he says that we are in the middle of an impeachment investigation but you know depending on which Democrat you ask. You'll get one thousand different answers. It's always a winning strategy to message it so another interesting thing. That happened over the weekend was congressman. Adam Schiff has subpoenaed a peanut the acting director of national intelligence claiming that he is unlawfully withholding a whistleblower complaint from the committee. Maybe at the behest of the president maybe the pest of someone the White House shifts says that because denies citing executive privilege around this document around this whistle blower it means it has to involve some top White House officials I I know that this matter is just completely shrouded in classification in secrecy but do you have any sense of what's going on under how this might play out yeah this was a real shock for us on Friday night to receive this kind of scathing statement from chef who's the chairman of the Intel Committee giving us just enough detail to be really concerned about a potential to cover up here that could involve the President President and a whistle blower in the intelligence community who who went to the inspector general of the CIA evidently to lodge some kind of complaint based on what he'd seen or she and but not enough for us to actually know what the indiscretion illegitimate discretion was whether or not you know the president has actually been an involved in discussions to keep it from the House Intel Committee but you know what this was really bizarre honestly for for shift to put out this kind of statement we rarely see him making this kind of you know subpoena and statement so strongly and so publicly and especially when the details it's on the public under so scarce so this really fell to us like it was a last resort like he was making this public because the negotiations between the Intel Committee the and the Acting Director of national intelligence had just fallen apart even though the inspector general within the CIA had gone directly to the Intel Committee and said look just have to give you a heads up. We have this whistle blower. I can't give you the full details of their complaint. You'RE GONNA have to go through the DNA so so really what we're hoping hoping to to see in the next coming days. It's just more details of what this complaint actually was evidence that shift might have to suggest that this cover up the Hughes alleging came from the White House and you know what involvement the Justice Department has had in this because according to shifts complaint the director the Acting Director of National Intelligence actually took this complaint from the whistleblower to the Justice Department which is unusual because that would be outside of the boundaries of the intelligence intelligence community so the whole thing is very odd and Schiff has been out on TV over the last few days discussing it but again really not providing any kind of you know minute details hells yeah it. It's hard to stress how weird it would be. I think for a CIA inspector general to take a matter to the Department of Justice normally they would be hell bent on resolving these kinds of things internally if at all possible right it's it's very weird and that's one of the biggest complaints obviously obviously that we've seen from the Durham investigation which is the Justice Department essentially going in and trying to interview. CIA officers about the conclusions that they drew in two thousand sixteen during the Russia probe just that kind of mixing of the DOJ and the Intel community is seen as a big no no because on the one hand you're dealing with prosecutors who deal in criminal activity on the other hand you're dealing with Intel officers who deal human intelligence and so they always fear that you the DOJ and administration is going to politicize their intelligence so it's very messy and we still don't have really any answers one of those stories. It's like like this could be like earth shattering massive revelations I it it might not in..

Just it is just incredible in terms of thinking about the geography so glasgow obviously one of the major cities in scotland edinburgh glasgow glove. There is a main glasgow airport which is right next to the city of glasgow vasko. This other airport that we're talking about is called glasgow prestwick airport and they put the name glasgow on it. It's actually like thirty miles outside town. It's easy to understand why that airport which is sort of on the coast away from everything and certainly away from the center of might be in economic distress and it has been economic distress for years the idea that that under trump the u._s. military is flying into that little out of the way airport that is basically otherwise going to close and spending eleven million dollars in fuel there at that airport to prop it up because that's the airport that services has golf course.
