"The proof is in the Pennzoil based on sequence for a wear tests using S E five W. 30 Jordan the N B. A playoffs lineup is all set in stone. We will get to see those games starting Monday, but A little bit of excitement today. With the play in games. We're not going to get any tomorrow and I'm going to be honest, I feel a little disappointed by that. But what we did see today was another incredible game and another. A stellar performance from Damian Lillard. And 154 points in three games for him, Jordan he is the bubble M V. P. Was there any doubt in your mind that he was going to win that MVP award? You know how that that team? I mean, date, Lord, I've been telling people quite simply Kelsey when I'm talking about being able to turn on to right now with where we are in a bubble, and now we're moving into the playoffs. Now it gets really, really. If you're telling me I got to tune in and watch one person. A lot of people gravitate towards LeBron James and I might say that in terms of, you know, I want to see if he can put it together that another special postseason get that title is in a Laker uniforms. But if you're talking about just the all factor right now, somebody's going to entertain you for full for full 4/4. I'm going with Dame. Damn has been that person for the minute they arrived in that bubble in Orlando. He's been that guy in the Blazers jersey. So for people who are just now seeing it because they've gravitated towards his sport with the offering of afternoon games, and all that you have missing out this is from this guy isn't old. By the way he has no intention of leaving Portland. He wants to win in that market scene look no further than the beef he had with those Clippers when he called them. Jumps for him to go to a team to get it done. He's a throwback guy, but he's an assassin on the court. He is ruthless in his approach, and it was really fun to see the guys around him. Lift him up A look. The guy still went for over 30 today. But he got those performances from nark it she got the clutch performances from Melo. Obviously, CJ McCollum carried him as he took the rookie job, Moran to school defensively as he made some big time shots down the stretch. The Blazers put it together. Most importantly now they get a day of rest. They're going to need that day of rest before they take off. These Lakers start become in Vogue. That these Blazers could be disruptive in this matchup, Jordan I was going to say the good news is if hey, you're looking to see LeBron and then you are also looking to see what dames doing. Guess what? You're going to get to see that you don't have to pick on Tuesday that that game Tuesday night at nine o'clock, Jordan, the other thing is you're talking about rest, right? And a team that is getting a lot of more rest and they want right now is the pelicans just win two games in the N B, a restart and some big news out of New Orleans today as they have fired Alvin Gentry after his five seasons there, just one postseason appearance, one playoff win for him and his time there and had still one year left on his contract. Jordan the pelicans, even though they on Ly one those two games they're executive VP David Griffin said. Even if they had a better showing, it would have necessarily saved Gentry's job. Obviously, a ton of young talent on that team and everybody's looking not even just at Zion, but also Brandon Ingram and wondering how you shape and mold Zion and where this franchise goes from here. And when you see the decision they made today to go ahead and move on from Alan. Gentry and look to what's next. When you think about what this team and what? What they need next to help mold this young talent. What stands out to you? The most. What stands out to me is it's new management. David Griffin was going to come in here and make a David Griffin moving put his stamp on this organization haven't come in there in April of last last year in 2019 is the executive vice president basketball operations. I think that this was a decision that had been made before they got into the bubble. Look, Zion's minutes. We're going to be managed in that bubble, so they couldn't really make the push that they wanted to do. And the management of Zion is probably mutually exclusive from the idea of this playoff push being of importance, but Griffin came out and said It was not if you're gonna play Zion under no minutes restriction and really make a play there that maybe they're trying to see, in fact of Gentry has some mojo in him to do something special and save his job. That was not the case and so to me. I didn't look for you. Obviously, it starts and ends with Zion and getting his body right getting this guy to a place where you can Showcase him like he wanted to do what you've drafted him. There's been so many steps and obstacles that presented themselves Kobe. Just the.

"Think that You know, A couple of things are swimming in my head right here. One of them is is that if the general manager and the vice president basketball operations wants the Bulls to play a certain way, a different way. You don't change that of midstream. Unless you're changing the roster, right? I mean, The idea that what we need to play more up tempo well, so How does that happen with this head coaching this coaching staff when it's one of the slower teams in the MBA, where it's more half court than trying to get up and down the floor now for a young team, one of the other teams in the league Yeah, you want to get down the floor, but that's that's not how they were coached. So now this during his off time, he's going to get the team together for them to learn new new offense. A new head coach in new coaching staff. Maybe, but I'm still not even sold on the players that the Bulls have. That's the other thing, too. Kobe whites. Young Zach Levine is 1/3 piece of a good team, but number one on this team. That's a problem. Lori Market in the window. Carter Jr. Otto Porter Jr is a veteran player. You know, Daniel Gafford se young player could change a lot of this roster. How about this? Erica? What if I tell you this? This. This particular roster, this depth chart is got to change and turnover for about 75% is needs to change in order for the Bulls to compete. Zach Levine can't be part of it. I'm just saying like this. I'm not taking a shot at him. I'm just saying, like, if he's a vocal point of your offense, you are Sacramento. Oh, your Phoenix and that's that's not good enough. If you're trying to compete to be one of top eight teams in the East I'm surprised we haven't heard whispers of adversely in car service out there. Shopping seeing well, Levin will get seeing what marketing will get C like seeing what Gafford and like. That core isn't a championship boarding corps, and I think they know it. I'm hope they know it at least. So. So who's to say they're not out there shopping? But then again when you bring in talent you feel but over now we're going to try and And and raised hell with Jim Boylan. So the whole thing right now is just upside down without any guidance at the head Coach position. I really mean it. Whenever we get back to everyone playing in the regular season whenever this happens, so you're gonna go back with the same team and you might have the same problems because you don't have enough talent. I don't have enough veteran talents, but this way I don't have enough beer in town to make it different to make a dent in me. Wanna top teams the East And again. I like market like Carter. I like I like Kobe whites upside. I like Otto Porter as a veteran, this team I like Zach Lavine, but just not on this team. Just you know, you're tryingto window Archie, Archie D'Aquino and until Valentine and just like you've got to be able to get better with this roster if you want to really seriously compete All right. Tell me up next. I didn't know that you could say no. That's next right here on under the hood..

The Glamorous Lakers' Unlikely Leader

"So Kevin. In spite of being blown out the other day in Boston the Lakers are still the number one seed in the West and everything is sunshine and rapes around the staple center but a year ago. It felt like there was a storm cloud hanging over the franchise. I had magic Johnson. President Basketball Operations nations stepping down team fired their head coach. Luke Walton and then they chose Frank Vogel as his replacement awesome and there was a perception around here in Los Angeles that it was a pretty uninspired choice right in some ways frank. Vogel is the Ultimate Safety School. So for the Los Angeles Lakers Kevin Arnovitz is an NBA insider for ESPN. They went after Monty Williams former player who has immense amount of respect but at the end of the day he got a much more appealing offer from the Phoenix Suns. Tai Lue was a top choice. Lebron's former coach NBA Championship. Cleveland Cavaliers in two thousand sixteen. And what are the Lakers. Do they offer him a contract that I think it's fair to say was. Maybe not befitting a championship coach. There's sort of a standard now for for what a NBA coach gets in terms of the years in terms of money and this particular contract offer fell far short of that to the point where I think the public certainly the perception within the League was here of the Lakers doing it again. They think they're the Lakers. They have this golden or around them they can just offer championship. Coach is his deals. That don't reflect that pedigree so they don't get money Williams tyler walks not for another job. He just walks and they get Vogel. I used to do a lot of L. A.. Sports Radio and I remember this announcement very vividly. Los Angeles Lakers fans. They were not happy. Happy Kevin in fact they were furious. Vogel I think at the outset was seen as an odd choice for a number of reasons. One one is. The Lakers are the Lakers. And they have traditionally gone after coaches. That are either real brand names or have this royal. LAKER occur bloodline they are part of the Laker family. So here comes Vogel who is coming off. Two year stint in Orlando where he lost twice as many games as he won one could say no fault of his own. It was it was a young mismatch roster of players. But he doesn't have a brand name he looks like an accountant announced he's never played in the NBA before so he doesn't bring with him. The story playing career so for a fan base and a franchise. That's always been very brand obsessed. Why are you getting this off? Brand coach was very much. I think the perception an off Branko. Now I'm imagining frank. Vogel at the Grocery store he's like the generic. I Love Kirkland. I I think that sets up this story very well because you great value. Oh you use the Kirkland of coaches and of course. The Lakers are widely perceived as his ex hyper glamorous NBA franchise in particular with Lebron James. They're going into an off season in which they're going to be trying to get free agents. This is before the trade for Anthony Davis and here comes maybe the least glamorous coach forget fans for a second just people inside the game fifteen choices of who is going to be. The next Lakers head coach. I don't I don't know that Frank Vogel would have been on one ballot. I'm not saying Bogle can't coach Lebron's right that's different. So how did he get start. Frank Vogel got his start by by being a pest he was division three point guard for a genie out of college and he became obsessed with Kentucky basketball when he was at home on winter. Break when you're watching that famous Duke Kentucky lightning later catches He decides I want to be part a big time college basketball. He's going to leave his division three school. He writes letters to the staff at Kentucky including Rick Pitino and they basically send back a form letter. Thank you for your interest. This is in the mid nineties so he decides. I'm just going to drop out of my college enroll at Kentucky. I'm GONNA drive there. Basically without an invitation nation. And I'm just going to hang around the facility. Whatever anything I can do to get inside volunteer? Whatever they need and little by little sure enough he hangs around enough due to the point? Where Jim O'Brien who was assistant to Rick Pitino said Okay Okay? We'll we have the video room. which at the time video rooms have become like the very sexy place to get your start as a coach? Now Erik Spoelstra Mike Putin Holzer Dave Fidel but back then it was still kind of a newish thing and so he just camped out in the video room and essentially became one of the best young video coordinators in all of basketball and to the point when when Pitino went to the Celtics they ultimately brought. Frank Vogel Oh go along with them. And then when O'Brien took over he promoted him again and so little by little. He's sort of the He's the kind of the little engine that could of basketball. So he dollars. O'Brien to Indianapolis. And that's where he gets his first shot as head coach. How does that go right? He gets to the Fr- what we call. The Front of the bench comes a top assistant in an Indiana Under Jim O'Brien O'Brien gets fired and Vogel's the next Guy Up Larry Bird actually ask Joe. Brian looked this. Guy's really loyal to you. Do you think you take the job. and Jim O'Brien profane. Lee said absolutely

I know the knicks have never had a suit and it was the same thing with the same thing when you it was the same thing with hearted hardy was a fucking day <hes> okay see how the super team in hand but louis young but harden was coming coming off the bench and then when he went to houston is crazy it was it was the mistake ed mistake. They mean a golden state 'cause they had dreamed are coming off the bench and one one one feng-chi they changed. It was one click in nice. That's listened man nashes what is going to have to be what do you think is the problem with the knicks. Was the problem ownership really hands down hands down. Nothing else to say. "Of it. How are you feeling right now? I feel good. I figure I have nothing to lose at this point. You know, it's like it's already gone so bad. He's as few days where it's just like a camera get any worse. What's going on with this, this segment? I don't know. There's a spin I felt like two or three in ROY did pretty well. And then just this last week and a half two weeks just been pretty bad to be honest. All right. I believe in you. Let's do this. Thank you, Bill. As we talked a lot about last I in through to show the pelicans selected Duke Zion Williams with the first overall selection yesterday's draft following pick the team's executive vice president basketball operations David Griffin was very candid with reporters about zion's role with the team. Look, this is not somebody who's supposed to be the savior of this franchise. That's not what this is. This is a nineteen year old kid who's going to spin this year learning how to play winning NBA basketball, let Zion, be that kid don't write this. Like he's here to save. This franchise, he's not he's here to join this family, and we're here to raise each other so buyers David Griffin is right. The Zayn isn't being brought in to be the savior. Sill. No. Now, David has to say that. Yes, I'm okay Griff has. That's what you had to say. And I know savers a strong word. He's the number one overall pick in the draft. And he is the reason they were able to move off Davis. If Zion Williams, it doesn't work out, either, we'll David Griffin tenure there. But you gotta take the pressure off. So I respect what griffis saying even though he knows. And I know and, you know Zion probably knows it's a little more complicated. So skip over the Celtics as many have been schedule on what's next to the team with Irving out and out warford both likely playing elsewhere the start of next season. Well after yesterday's draft teams gentlemen, Danny had this is I'm excited about our team going forward. I like where we're headed. I liked the core young group of guys. And I think it's gonna be really fun. I think we're going to be really competitive team again. And I don't know what the exactly the team is gonna look.

"It just it just made it hard for us to, to really try to do anything that we want to do we had that stretch where after we traded for auto when he was healthy, we were playing pretty well and had some decent moments. But this is going to be holding team. It's going to be a fresh start for a lot of guys. I think the, the energy from the staff will be different because we've got a couple of new people and Chris, ROY Rogers that should kind of infuse a different little bit of attitude to us, and so we're optimistic. But say this. If you've heard me talk, I never oversell anything we've got long way to go. We have a long way to go. We won twenty two games last year, and you can say you had injuries and we did. But that's not that's not an excuse. It we, we. We won twenty two games. So we've got a long way to go to be competitive. That's, that's what we knew star, we need we need our players to every night. They're out there grinding and playing hard. Our fan base can say, hey, this group has potential to, to be something special and, and the reality, too, for us is, we need the current players on a roster before this draft night to get better. We've said it all along lower market. We feel has great promise. He needs to step up when Dell and a second year needs to auto and Zach as leaders of this team need to step up. So that's where we're headed. But tonight was a good start for us, and we're going to free agency. We'll see what we can do reason why you didn't find me very often because I was off in the states. A lot. Any any anybody stand out that could make the right like I like all kins- while lemon junior going to the basket, there was an igniter anybody you like, well Walt's going to be with us this summer. So we'll we'll see. But now with the G league, we have this opportunity to sign two way contracts and things like that. Those are valuable now because, you know, it goes back to what you talked about the load management. We, we have fifteen we have a fifteen man roster. The G league allows us to tap, two more players that you can bring up for forty five days and they can in games and that type of thing. So there's real value there. So we are looking at that avenue. Maybe. To find a jam if we can go from there, but Hoffman statesman pretty good to us. We, we've gotten a couple of couple talented young men for a program. I know you're not going to give us names as you head towards for agency. But what are you guys looking at as the biggest need something? Maybe three point shooter is a veteran leadership is something that you guys have pinpointed that we need to go out in a choir this summer. Well combination of things I mean, we, we want good vets. We want guys that. Fit who we want to be at JIMBO. So that's tough minded. We need a little more front court. I think if we can find some versatility and maybe that three or four position, you know, that would help us, and we still are looking at guards, maybe that might fill a gap we still have work to do and got some, some ideas. And now we get to tackle that you like the landscape with the NBA, we like it, because we think it's wide open thing, we're not going to do what we did she last year. We did not say playoffs, once we did not play we with that last year. So that's saying that you said a straight though you said, yes around saying that we're right. Calm right process. It is. Yeah. I like I said, I want us to get back to our fan base can say, hey, these guys competing every night and, and feel good about the guys out there on the floor. I think Kobe will be somebody that our fan base will enjoy watching play. I think our his teammates will enjoy him. He'll he'll. Great so. But it's just a start. And we still got a long way to go once again, we are going to open up for you after this. We're going off. Aw. This is the fourth year in a row. We're going to ask you again. Man. Early. We don't we don't talk blows, it would just talk about the draft and talk about other teams discuss free agency. We're, we're gonna go. All right. Every time thank you. Thank you, John. Paxson vice-president basketball operations with us here on ESPN one thousand ESPN app as we broadcast lot here from the advocate center. All right. My friend. Anything else that stands out most listen. We started this by saying, I hope the bulls, get a point guard. I hope he's a game changer. I think that's what the bulls got. It seems like they accomplished exactly what they were trying to do tonight. And you know as we go forward with this bull's team I thought it was a good conversation. John Paxson clearly, they are in the mindset of these players need to get on board with what they're trying to do. I thought again I know that's why we asked it, but the committing to running last season wasn't there. And it looks like that's what they're going to try and do this year. Kobe whites gonna push the pace so people get onboard Carter lower in Zach mean they better be ready to run because that's Kobe whites going to do. And Jonathan like you were saying earlier Jim Boylan he better be ready for that style of offense to because Kobe white, not gonna wait. Well, they said that. I mean, he put it out there to the press told us that there's going to be more of a pace that Jim wants to do that. Now here's the thing, I will accept. What he said about toward the end of the season. There was a lot of injuries and that's why I ask about the G league players because they got a chance to watch a number of those guys. All right. Because I was thinking, well, you saw them maybe one of them can make a roster spot. While lemon junior is a nice third guard have on your team. He says, he's going to be in the facility. And a few others. So, you know. I understand what he says that they got to play with more pace and they couldn't do it because of personnel last year. You can't run a bunch of stuff with players. It's not even use to the system. So I get that. But now fresh slate for the upcoming season. He didn't answer my three point question. Did he not really? Okay. He says they want to do it. And he clearly knew he's aware that they're twenty. Seventh. See immediately not said. So he knows it. You know, it seems like it's something that they're aware of now, implementing that might be a different story. I think Kobe whites can go a long way to that because he can shoot from three and he can create his own shot, the keys out of place because work, apparently, we're locking up here. It's you me art. Who's been here with us all night. Si see job walking over there. Casey Johnson and the clip crew. I'm wearing Cole Hans, but I'll play some basketball. You know, it will here too. All right. He's on your team. Thanks for nothing. Paxson. I'll take the three point shooter. We thank you for coverage of the twenty nineteen NBA draft show here on ESPN one thousand and the ESPN app. Thanks so much for listening to our broadcast. So I'm very lucky to have the people that have worked with me on this radio show. But contrary to what you believe. It's not just migrate. This even though I'm great. It's also them. So I just wanna make sure everybody's with this you understand. There's a lot that goes into put me on air start just me on Michael or me in front of the camera. I just think that's important to point stand, especially now because after the day, I don't know what the hell. From trying to. I don't wanna see anybody. I really don't. "Sometimes get confused numbers producer looking at me. What the hell is wrong with you? You know, that's what happens when you to our sleep because you've been delayed flights travel back from international flights and stuff like that anyway. The real story is about Kevin to win. And I really haven't had an opportunity to elaborate extensively on this. For those of you. You may have heard. My takes watch on sports any may of her. My takes listen to me. Yes, they speak in the wheel Kane who's filling in on my show. When I called for the first segment, here's a reality situation. Revision history, y'all getting Gaijin that if you want to let me be very, very clear if it were me Kevin Durant with a play. I wanna make sure that I'm clear about that. So there's no confusion about where I stand. If it were me, Kevin Durant would've played now I'm not going to question the society in legitimacy of Bob Myers. The president basketball operations for the Golden State Warriors with his tearful mea culpa in the post game press conference after Kevin. Durant went down. I will tell you, if it were me, he would have played and I can assure you, I wanna be crying like bombers that I can promise you that I promise you now Baba's my man I love him daily but. Would tell them today. There's no crying basketball. There's no crying in basketball. I mean not not for executive now for the coach or manager. I mean I'm going with Tom Hanks on that one league just crying crying crying. Why are you crying that would have been me will say that affectionately because I have a very good relation by Mayes? I got a lot of love for the brother. Does a great job for the Golden State Warriors. I'm just teasing them a little bit there with those tears. But I do understand the legitimacy of what he was concerned about, and let's call it, what it is. You're going to have people right now, looking at the Golden State Warriors. Let me come to the defense of the Golden State Warriors in this regard. Kevin Durant had his own doctors, the warriors doctors and trainers were involved as well. There were a multitude in amalgamating of pinions, or cadre, opinions that came on down the pike and openly it was agreed that he would be okay to go and gave up. We saw him shuffling, his feet and dancing in the hallways. Before the gay, we saw him in warmups Dunkin the basketball, and the lamp line. We saw come out there in the first quarter drop eleven points drilled three threes. It's a Ron toast face. He looked like he was in route to scoring forty forty okay? And then this happened, we slice to anyway, we want to, but the reality of the situation in fact that a matter is Kevin Durant appeared ready. He want. He appeared ready to play. And so when you look at it from that perspective, clearly, the first injury the initial injury was a calf injury. It was not an achilles injury. This appears to be an achilles injury that you could say it was exacerbated by week, cath. Or you could say as a freak accident. Because guess what this plenty of do the didn't have calf injuries before going down within the Killys. Now, if you're Bob Myers, obviously, you're gonna take heat because there's an abundance of people who say he shouldn't have play. I'm not of that mindset, I want to be very, very clear is the finals was Kevin Durant one hundred percent. No way in hell, you going to need more time for that to heal..

"I mean most front office guys now. Did not play in the NBA. Is that a fair statement? Most front office, president basketball operations type guys. Play in the league not as many as baseball but yeah but Myers didn't play league. Rob Pelinka didn't play in the league Jarrell, Maury Gerson Roseanne hired in our Buford. Didn't play inside jury didn't. Yeah. I mean, we've, we've gone from with the basketball has transitioned to an era where and this is why you hear this anti analytic stuff amongst old school players. They're like, who are these guys. Right. They never played the game. They can't possibly understand the gets the scene in money ball where the old scout says Billy let us find the play. Right. And he's like you're not getting it. Yeah, yeah. I wonder if that's starting to happen in basketball, it seems certainly seems to be happening in Houston. Yeah. Seems like it may be going that way. I would not surprise me a few Sten was the was the first one to do it. I can we talk about the dodgers. Yeah. Talk about the dodgers hundred ru. Another spectacular start the game was tomorrow. He'd be the starter. Yes. Because remember Dave Roberts is the manager but he's not gonna win the Cy Young award. Why I'll tell you next. Mason, Ireland, ESPN LA now the dodge again last night behind the pitching of hinge in review in review, has an ER a now down to one point five unbelievably leads the majors. I'm you know I'm happy about for him. You know, he took a one year deal. Yep. For eighteen million. That's right. You took the qualifying offer. Correct. And he bet on himself, now it looks like it's paying off nigga just root for him to stay healthy. But Mace he's been not only the best pitcher in baseball this year. But you could argue is one of the best at the end of last year. And if he keeps this going. His, you know, everything his fifth his ERA his he's elite. He's the only person better than him this year in strand, percentage, like we're understand, is ver- Lander. I, I would think it would be as to quote, my friend, Dave mcmenamin, a dereliction of duty. If you didn't vote for him for the Cy Young. Why do you think he's not gonna win it because John, he's only made thirty starts once in his career that was his rookie year. He's never thrown more than one hundred ninety two innings. He missed two seasons with a shoulder injury came twenty seventeen. He made twenty four starts last year. He made fifteen he's already made eleven this year. He's, they are going to put him on the pretend mythical idea back is stiff de L N. I am completely in favor of it. This is the guy. I want in the postseason. I don't want a down. Okay. Jane that Greg, if he starts twenty five games and wins ERA title. How does he now win the saying? Oh, he will depend on how many games he misses during the year. But no twenty-five maces about what you're shooting for start. So I mean you know, just Burland primate thirty to start three starts if the ale in the Al..

"All right. So let's let's look at the last six years, I know genie. But don't you tie the first three to Mitch? And Jim will you do? But you also tied the first three to genie and she apologized after she finally, I'm going out her brother. I'm gonna ask you a question that I can't even believe it's coming out of my mouth. Okay. Right now. We'll do the better off Jim was still here. Well, the fact that you hesitant to answer, it means at least it's I'm thinking because I think we'd be better off if Mitch was here. Mitch has done this. I mean, Mitch Mitch made the pow Gosol trade and got those last two championships in the Kobe right mean Mitch has championship pedigree. He screwed up, obviously. But but again, okay who who screwed up was a Jim was at Mitch. They went out and signed magic, Robin sign. Lou dang and signed Tim famous gov, which which one was the driving force in that Mitch, obviously is now the isn't he president basketball operations, Charlotte? He's running the hornet running the Hornets. Yeah. But I I would feel better. If there was somebody in that front office with some basketball championship pedigree. And you know, one thing jumped out at me in the last two weeks that I don't think we talked about a lot was that Phil Jackson weighed in with genie on the Tyler. Do. Whether or not he was the right guy in Phil apparently gave genie the thumbs up. Yup. Tie is a good choice. Disfigure still have influenced. These occur Rambus sky, some right, wait, Kurt Kurt was one of his guys genie. Obviously, they were engaged. Yeah. I would think so. Like, she's not answering the phone if he calls because the thing is he wasn't very good at this. He was great coach. But he was a really bad basketball executive, right? Really bad front office guy went down in flames. So if that's another source of of advice or another advisor, that's probably not the right advisory. Either. I it just it boggles my mind the thing that Dr Jerry Buss did over and over again was to find the best people. And then let them do their jobs. What genie has failed to do is find the best people? There's no nobody anywhere can make the argument that rob is the best person for that job. There's nobody anywhere that can make the argument that Kurt Rambis, and and Linda Rambus are the right people to be assisting in basketball operations, hire the best people and then get out of the way. That's what genie has failed to do. And that's why so much of the blowback is on her. It's not on rob. It's not on on Linda and Colonel though, they're getting a fair amount of grief. It's on genie. 'cause she's the one who's empowering people. She's empowering the wrong people. She's not going out and getting getting the best people like her dad did the most qualified people track records. She's not surrounding yourself by the very very best. That's why the blowback is on genie. Yeah. And I think it's fair. It's a an it's such a critical summer with all those big names moving. You should be communicating right now stability, that's what you want front office stability. It's literally one of the checklists on every single free agents to do list for this summer. Let's see good talent to play with guys. I like playing with guys whose games I think I messed with good coach coach I like coach that I feel like gets me front office is it stable. Do they does it feel like they know what's going on? That's one of the three big decisions because van about manual Instagram models. We check that box. We definitely check that box. Marquez? Let's say you're call Marcus in Palm Springs, you're on ESPN LA. Hey, marcus. Hey. Hey, john. Thanks for having me on my wife, Mary happy mother's day. Mary, thanks guys. "Like he didn't say anything in that meeting, and that was supposed to be LeBron exit meeting where they talked about the season and plans going forward. And so like either something happened between Saturday and Tuesday were magic said I'm out, and I can't tell anybody that. I don't wanna that who doesn't wanna talk into it or and this is the more. I report on this the where they keep talking to people about what happened, right? I think he just got selfish. I really do think magic just in that moment. Just said, I choose me. Choose the life. I wanna have. And there was a right way to do this which is to tell him to genie bus. Satele his career is held the oh something happened that made him make this decision. I have respect for Magic Johnson. Still after this day. I he's an icon of the game. We love talking to him. He still did this one thing the wrong way. I I don't think there's any other way. My second or third year. Rick Pitino quit on the spot. After the game. It was like he was like I'm done, y'all. And I was like, whoa. But did he tell you where the media I he told to the locker like other game? I'm like. Say young player. I'm still trying to make. I don't know. I didn't notice how do they just can't quit on the spot? A year. Mike, you could just leave whenever you want. Honestly, like, I he didn't tell them on Saturday. He didn't tell him before he made this announcement. But I just really magic was the guy that he met with. But the Brian came to the Lakers because he wanted to come to the Lakers. I think that's true. Right true. But it'll be. I would I wouldn't could comes to the Lakers of magic wasn't even the president. It depends on who else was the president. Right. He was a factor. But I don't think he's the guy that you can say he came there because he wanted to work with match, right, right? If magic had been the president basketball operations in Minnesota. "I don't recall it. I was young at that point. And I wasn't reading the LA times at that point because you know, the internet didn't exist, but but my guess is he hasn't dealt with a lot of basketball criticism over his career, and that was foreign to him. Yeah. And the grind is not something that he wanted to do. And look he lives a great bleeping light rain in Basseterre, which you couldn't do that's the restriction restricted being magic guiding him. But again, like there's a difference with T Magic Johnson's like basic opportunity cost to doing this job. And like mine. Right, right. I gotta do this right? Can't you gotta give the tape. But I do think that this is actually a good thing for the Lakers. Now again, like you I thought to myself a why didn't he just consult? Why did he have to be the president basketball operations and create this mini storm that they had with because he could have just done this role the time. But regardless of that, I actually think this is good news for the Lakers, which they haven't had a ton of good news lately. The fact that he is still willing to help and be part of this. When I think he's most impactful actually in this situation, and you can you can say what you want about the roster composition for last year. And we've all done it over the year, and you know, maybe should have gotten a couple of shooters instead of the, but it was all one year guys. I've never so he didn't come in. And make some mistake in that position. That's going to hamper the Lakers for years to come like for the last regime like paying MAs goven ding cost a lot to get to to handle. Yeah. Okay. Bus and magic magic came in and for LeBron dead. Calm and. The one year acquisitions didn't work out of obviously, the injuries were big part of this. But it's not like he came in and let and left delivers tatters of from from the roster composition perspective in the future. That's all know, my absolutely right. Like, I it's funny to me the day after he stepped down how how the rhetoric and even before the rhetoric around is that everything he did was terrible. And I was just like wait a second. I know these guys did some good things here. They made mistakes. I'm not here to absolve them. The the the who they pick for their one year deals. It was terrible. I think the zoo botch traders just a disgrace right in terms of dismiss affiliate of negotiation failure of talent evaluation, very on many levels. But like you said they got the books in order. They drafted well with the draft picks that did have they develop ago. Let's my favorite won't be saying they didn't develop players have you seen Cal. I didn't remember any you guys mkaku being one of the best players in the draft before it right yet. Josh was really good up to the point. Whereas right. You started hurt. Yeah. Yeah. "It's just baseball doesn't always have to be positive. It can also be negative. It's like all right. We've seen enough. Now, it's been two months where he's been bad. I just I'm not ready. Three games isn't doing games where he's it's a little bit concerned. Just given how good he wasn't the playoffs last year, and you figured maybe that would carry over. But I'm not I'm not panicking yet. I'm just not no, no panic is a strong word. Yes. I would say panic is a strong word like an eyebrow eyebrow race. Well, clearly, it's going to be your left because you're right. I don't believe you can raise right? You've got the stitches through the right eyebrow. At the moment. If you're just tuning in Trudell, basically bumped some bumped his head with somebody playing basketball. What's I say crashes a crashed or more she'll let me get to this Ramona stuff here, and then Bill Orem also has a fantastic piece in the Atlantic that I want to kind of comb through in the next segment so stick around for that. But let's get to the more Ramona stuff, so fun. There are two more bites that she talks about the front office on the jump today. And again Ramon is gonna join us a little later. So makes you come by for that. Can you play them both back to back? So that way we can just kind of get the full context of it. And I know the season has been over for a long time they haven't they're not gonna make the playoffs. But if you're in a position where you in the head coach and the front office, the general manager of the president basketball operations are not in lockstep. If there's not a trust. If there's not a relationship there that has been had two years to build. Then what what are you doing as an organization? I mean, I know there is a separation between church and state sometimes because the front office has to make decisions at the coach may disagree with right? And they need deniability. Why? When Doc Rivers was both it didn't work, right. The players know that he could trade them. But this is different. You need to have an alignment between coach in front office at least organizationally because it needs to there needs to be a trust. Is there needs to be a trust there? When you look at the good when you look at the good organizations in this league. And I'll point to the Golden State Warriors where Luke came from. And they're the gold standard right now. Myers. Myers and Steve currency page. Steve Kerr is not worried about if I don't play this guy. I'm getting fired Tamar. Nobody's worried about if I advocate for that person. Who's going to get blamed like if I don't advocate for that person isn't going to be put on me that those types of conversations and feelings are not what exists in winning cultures. And I think Magic Johnson and rob Pelinka need to hire. Whoever they are going to hire that they are in step with because that level of trust. When it does not exist. It's I it's dysfunctional at at a whole new level. All right. Let's let's talk about that on the other side Trudeau because we're actually getting we get to go back upstairs now because the winds are howling your occasionally, not allowing us to work. So on the other side, I want to tackle some of those questions. I wanna get kind of your thoughts on continuity, lack thereof potentially how to try to kind of make this thing work here this off season. We'll try to get down that path as we're here with the last game really starting to hope, you know, unfortunately for Luke looking. Forward potentially beyond him at this point. So we'll get to that. Plus, the great Bill Orem piece in the Atlantic today, which kind of highlighted a number of things that you kind of heard hushed tones and whispers, but have now come to light about the way the front office and Luke kind of interacted we'll get to some of that in just a moment. Trudeau hanging out sit down and show ESPN LA so down to show here on ESPN LA in the studio. Now, that's more like it avoiding the wind and things flying at us. So Trudell is here. Still beat up on..

"In the last couple of days with reports Ramona Shelburne talking about no communication between magic Lori for weeks. Clearly, I think there was gonna. Be a move. And as we've heard Jeanie Buss is a fan of Luke Walton as as a matter of fact, and I think maybe she just put her foot down and said that he's going to be the coach next year. And maybe Magic Johnson to said. All right. Well, then I gotta go. It is just mind boggling because just when you think maybe a great franchise lake. This could start to get it together. You've got legendary people in place, whether it is magic at the title of basketball operations or president basketball operations kidding LeBron as a free agent last year, the mess just seems to circulate itself. Yeah. Can you believe it you get one of the top? If not top player, you could argue LeBron James one of the greatest players in the history of the game come to your franchise. And it's an absolute disaster. This season was a disaster who wants to go there in the summer? What free agents are going to be able to get who's going to be running the LA Lakers, a complete mess as we approached July one that's not that far away. And they better get their stuff right there. "And every market donald mitchell makes me want to watch him every single night to see how he continues to get better ever every night and we've seen in the playoffs already and so they're taking on a strong houston team now utah they're going to beat houston in the series before it is it is quite interesting i it really is and by the way something else compelling about these about these nba playoffs is that i think that we found the new spike lee and we found the new jack nicholson and his name is drake i think we've found exactly who that is now dry it is it is drake who has a mega fan but also works in the front office with the toronto raptors he has his own desk and office in the with the raptors so the nba has worn raptors mega fan about the use of bad language after the rapper and kendrick perkins traded angry words during game one other teams playoff series kiki vandeweghe the nba's executive vice president basketball operations spoke to messiah jury who was the president of the raptors and requisites courtside for toronto's home games there cata center and he's part of that fan base they were jawing face to face so drako's called say all kinds of things about about kendrick perkins and that's becoming of number one fan but number two somewhat actually kind of works around the team so i mean i know he's all into it but man i mean come on is drake the difference between the raptors win or loss clearly not because if this was like a strategy by a you going to get into kindred perkins face and so now let's just rev up the raptors to win game to clear that wasn't the.
