Who Is Venezuela's President?

"But in agreement about who the government is in venezuela of late. This dynamic has like so many other things being more or less precisely the opposite of what it should. The country's president nicolas maduro tolerates little opposition while a goodly number of venezuelans and dozens of other countries. Don't think he's really the president anyway. The question of who presently is the legitimate government of venezuela is currently being examined by the supreme court of the united kingdom at issue is fourteen tonnes of venezuela's gold stored by the bank of england. President Maduro Consolidates Power As The Opposition Grows Weaker

"Backed opposition in Venezuela has spent years trying to dislodge authoritarians President Nicolas Maduro. Nothing has worked instead, as John Otis reports Maduro has consolidated power, while the opposition appears to be growing weaker by the day. It wasn't long ago that Maduro's days appeared to be numbered. His oil rich country was facing its worst economic meltdown in history as well as crippling U. S sanctions. Nearly 60 nations recognised opposition leader Kwon Guido as Venezuela's rightful head of state in January. Why, though, was a guest of honor at President Trump's State of the Union address here this evening? A very brave man who carries with him the hopes, dreams and aspirations of all Venezuelans. Joining us in the gallery is the true and legitimate president of Venezuela. Juan Guido. Mr President, please take this message, but Nicolas Maduro is still ensconced in the presidential palace. The Venezuelan military has ignored y those calls to mutiny. Anti government protests have petered out. Meanwhile, the opposition is split between moderates who favor negotiations and hardliners who want military action to oust Maduro. The hardline strategy backfired in May, when a tiny force of exiled Venezuelan soldiers tried to invade their homeland. They were quickly captured or killed. So is very stock for us. Right now. We have a very, very complicated situation. That's unhealthy. Alvarado Ah, lawmaker with an opposition party called First Justice. The government jailed several party members. Then last month in a legal maneuver, it replaced the leaders of first justice and two other opposition parties, with politicians friendly to Maduro. Alvarado claims these new party bosses were paid off to switch sides. First, they persecute the literature off our party. Then they tried to divide us on DH. Then they replace the leadership of our party with new months that received the money off Maduro. The Venezuelan government ignored NPR's requests for comment. Chef Ramsay of the Washington office on Latin America, says Maduro wants to weaken but not eliminate the opposition. It is ultimately useful for the regime to point to the existence of opposition politicians in Venezuela, as it allows them to say that they live in a democracy. Maduro controls nearly every government institution. Except for the National Assembly, which is led by Juan Guido. But now the opposition is talking about boycotting this year's legislative elections because of fears of vote rigging. If the opposition does boycott why, though, will no longer be president of the Legislature. Jeff Ramsey notes that this post is the basis for his claim to be Venezuela's legitimate head of state. The international community is going to be at a crossroads where they'll have to decide whether to continue recognizing one way, although as interim president Venezuela at a recent rally in Caracas. Why, though, tried to buck up his followers, But if there's a political physical office, you know He acknowledged that they're worn down and frustrated. But he insisted the opposition would outlast Maduro. No, only are the wellbore idea. They are not going to defeat us. Why, though, proclaimed, We are still here

"Where position leader one Guido is calling for what he calls the final phase of the effort to force President Nicolas Maduro from power. He's trying to get the military to abandon Madero inside with him. Joining us now is for Nando cuts who's a fellow at the Wilson center was a senior advisor to former national security advisor, HR McMaster, Fernando, welcome to you. And the Venezuelan foreign minister said today that this coup attempt, which is what is being called was planned in Washington. What kind of conversations do you think are going on in Washington right now, the Trump administration about what's happening? There are how involved have they been in. What's going on in Venezuela? Good afternoon. Jeremy, and thank you very much for having me on, you know, I think that the term coup is already a term that's being incorrectly used by by the Madero regime, if there was ever a coup that took place in Venezuela was really when Madero himself chose to ignore the people ignore the the popular vote last year and decide to stay in power against the the will of his own people. And so I think what's happening now is a perhaps a military uprising of sorts where the military is siding with the people of as well and saying enough is enough the people have suffered for too long, and it's time to stand up to to to the dictatorship that Madero has led the United States has certainly been very involved along with over fifty to other countries from around the world in supporting of interim, president Godot and supporting the people of his well throughout this this constitutional crisis of sorts, but at the heart of it, it's a real of an as well in issue. It's Venezuelan crisis. And it's going to require of as well in response and. And so I think this is what we're seeing play out right now. So what do you think is going to happen? We've already seen reports today of military vehicles. Running over protesters out in the streets of Caracas. It's dangerous situation. There it looks like there are some clashes going on. What do you expect will happen? It's a very unfortunate to Jewish in. And it's it's unclear at the moment. I think it's one of those those things that you know, we're gonna need probably a few hours or maybe a day to let the smoke clear out and actually see what the situation is like on the ground. There's a lot of rumors going around. There's a lot of speculation both sides, of course, engaged in their own kind of version of of spinning the events that are happening. But the reality is most likely very messy. I think there are factions of the military that seem to be siding with guy do and and it's unclear how large those factions are, and there seemed to be factions of the military that are still siding with Maduro and are willing to you know, as you said plow down, the the people who are trying to protest in the streets. So so I think this will unfortunately, be very messy. But, but it's I think it's critical that this be resolved in this peaceful a manner as possible and that democracy be restored to Venezuela. And just briefly, what do you think is at stake around the rest of the world. We've already seen Russia come out and say, they're condemning what's going on there Turkey, also very happy. Absolutely. I think the entire world isn't happy to be honest. You know, I think that that much. We're all United on the status quo was not sustainable for the people of as well, it was a real humanitarian crisis. We've been seeing images around the world for months now of of the incredible suffering. The starvation the malnutrition lack of medicine lack of basic hygiene. And so something had to change whether or not this will be the thing that changes is still, you know, unclear, but ultimately again, I think Maduro need to step aside allow democracy to be restored and allow humanitarian assistance back into the country. "Of two teens and a single vehicle accident and in New England nearly sixty thousand were without power at the storm's peak, though, many of those have their power restored by the afternoon opposition leader, Juan guidos calling his supporters to take to the streets in a show of strengthened determination. As he returned to Venezuela. Why don't came back to Caracas Monday after more than a week abroad defying orders banning him from leaving. He went to a multi nation tour. Speaking us, a seeking support from neighboring South American countries in his quest. Unseat President Nicolas Maduro Guido called on people to flood the streets of cities across the country on Saturday to protest Medeiros. Hold on power. I landed at Venezuela's main airport just outside Caracas thing, he sailed through immigration checks the national assembly. President maintains he's the legitimate interim president of the country because Medeiros reelection last year was invalid. Well, there are some thoughts among Democrats here at home that Representative Alexandria Cossio Cortez's line of questioning Michael Cohen public hearing last week might have laid the groundwork for a possible subpoena of President Trump's tax returns Cossio Cortez says Democrats need to focus on the president's business dealings. Well, I think you know, you hear the president say, no. Collusion. No collusion. No collusion. Right. He's always talking about the focus on the relationship between his campaign and Russia, which is the scope of that investigation is on the house intelligence committee as well as several other investigatory, Bali bodies. So while he's talking collusion. Collusion's collusion. I think in oversight. We should be talking about taxes taxes taxes and his Bank account his Bank account. His Bank account is financial statements statements statements because that's where I think actually some of the most troubling practices are with direct relevance to the American people are under the scope of oversight. So this is this is a major issue. We're talking about him in artificially inflating his assets to insurance companies and artificially deflating his assets in order to avoid paying taxes when he's already benefiting when the public is building and paying for the courses that he's profiting off of. So I think that these are series. Issues. I think we need to look at his finances. A Republican Representative Kevin Brady is the ranking member of the House Ways and means committee at committee one of the few who can subpoena a witch can subpoena the president's tax returns at Brady told that would be an abuse of power the law, prohibits congress from going after an individual's tax returns for political purposes. That's exactly what this fact the law protects Americans congress using their their power to target individual Americans. And this is exactly the case here. Look, I think you Democrats weaponized attacks go to target the president. Feature chairman of the ways, and means committee is I once held that post have the ability to target any American. They choose for political purposes. In the meantime, they're all already checks and balances the president. Okay. Well, let's just mentioned up for one second. Because when you say political purposes, I understand what you're saying. Right. You don't want to be able to go after anybody. But it's political as the word that I'm questioning here. What if what if there is crime evidence of fraud in those tax? Political that would be a cry. So shouldn't there be evidence of that? So right now, the president and the vice president's tax returns are. Automatically each year by the IRS in my guest is with a great deal of scrutiny. They have a criminal investigations unit. Just as they investigate an audit us, they do I think with special attention in both if the special counsel have access to if there are challenges or problems concerns within those tax returns. So I think that is where who is best equipped to tackle this Brady says he thinks Democrats would be weaponized the tax code, President Trump celebrated the division one winning North Dakota state university football team at the White House with a fast food feast, Trump hosted the championship players Monday where the spread of burgers, fries and Chick-fil-A sandwiches. You'd never get tired of waiting. These guys that's for sure. But think of it it's the seventh title in eight years, and you have some great football teams in that program. I know that in that group, and you should all be incredibly proud. We had the Clemson Tigers year. And I did the same thing we could have had chefs we could have, but we get fast food, as we know what I know you people. I'm going to finish this quick as we gotta get that stuff. Although it's being kept pretty warm McDonald's Wendy's we have a couple of others to I won't get into. But we have all American Burger King. We have we like American companies. Okay. And that's what we did. So.

"No other cellphone maker had a robot like this. While we at the time was a much smaller company and its phones were not that great. So while we entered into this business agreement with T mobile that allowed its engineers to use tabby at T Mobile's factory. And according to what is at times of pretty comical Email trail, while we engineers bungled their way through trying to figure out how happy works. They take legal photos of tabby the Email measurements of the robot back to managers in China. They ask so many questions about tabby that t mobile tells them to stop or they'll be thrown out of the factory and at one point one. Holly engineer, dismembers tapioca to steal. It's arm and bring it home in a bag. Wow. They were very intent on figuring out. How tap what may tabby tick? So is this do we know if this is just like an an isolated incident with this particular robot, or is it indicative of something bigger? Well, that brings us to the most damning part of this indictment alleges that around the time while we was caught stealing T mobile technology, while we headquarters in China launched a company wide policy establishing a bonus program that rewarded employees who stole technology from competitor. So so if that's true, then it's possible. There are more tabbies out there how how is China responding to this? Well, a while we spokeswoman she said that she denied all the charges said it reached out to the department of Justice to talk about mung Joe, but did not receive a reply. Beijing responded by saying the US was violating the rights of mung one. Joe? Oh, we're gonna find out. How all of this plays out later this week when Chinese vice premier Leo ho meets with the Trump administration to continued. Those trade talks hallway is too big of a Chinese company to not be part of these talks. And it's a good bet. These new criminal charges against the company are going to come up. Rob Schmitz, joining us from Shanghai this morning to talk about all this. Rob. Thanks. Appreciate it. Thank you. Now, here's the latest US move against the government of Venezuela. The US treasury announced new sanctions targeting Venezuela's. Oil exports US refineries say, they will no longer send cash to Venezuela in exchange for crude oil. Here's Treasury Secretary, Steven Mnuchin, the United States is holding accountable. Those responsible for Venezuela's tragic decline and in a complicated scenario. The United States says it is happy to keep receiving Venezuelan oil but wants to avoid directly paying for it. How's it gonna work? Well, NPR's Camilo Domino's is here to try to explain good morning. Good morning. So what is the basic theory of the US approach of targeting Venezuela's oil at all so Venezuela's heavily reliant on its oil exports. And it's specifically heavily dependent on sales to the United States because the US is one of the few remaining sources of cash for the Venezuelan government and Venezuela's economy is in free fall. It's been collapsing for several years. And the country has massive shortages of food medicine electric city pretty much everything. Socialist government management hasn't gone. Really? Well, things have gradually gotten worse than you have political chaos as protests mounted against that government. Right. So Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro is increasingly unpopular he declared victory and a reelection the election was disputed and now the opposition leader one Guido has also declared himself president. So like, you said political chaos in the United States has a firm position on this. The US has backed Guido against Madero. So these sanctions are designed to put as much pressure as possible on Medeiros government in order to attempt to get him out of office. Okay. So how did the sanctions work? So the sanctions say that the US refineries cannot send money in exchange for oil that they receive from Pedrosa the state owned oil company, they can still take that oil in if then as well as willing to keep sending it, but the billions of dollars of. Payment that would be put out we'll go into blocked accounts in the US instead of going to Venezuela. Oh, maybe like, the they'd be impounded. They'd be frozen assets that might be going to Venezuela sometime later or maybe end up with the opposition government at some point. Exactly. The treasury department says if there's a new government in Venezuela that government will get access to these blocked accounts. Why would the US specifically say Venezuela? It's fine for us to send the oil. Anyway. So the reason to leave this channel open the possibility of receiving this. Crude oil, the the Trump administration wants to push me out of office. But they don't necessarily want to totally disrupt the oil industry for one thing u s refineries on the Gulf Coast have been buying this oil, and it would be really disruptive for them to not have any access to it at all. It could also affect world oil market. So the United States needs the oil that it doesn't want to pay for we have been taking that oil in and processing whether we need it is a little bit of a point in dispute. Venezuela's oil production has already dropped significant. Lately over the last several years, sir finery is that used to be pretty dependent on this. Crude oil are less dependent on it now than they used to be. But that said, it is a significant factor in some refineries particular reason, the Madero government would allow the oil to continue being sent even though they would not be receiving payment anytime soon if ever so like, I said visuals Wales really reliant on cash money from the US, and one reason is because there aren't a lot of people around the world who are buying Venezuelan oil and paying money for it. Russia and China are taking oil, and but they aren't paying for it either. They're accepting it as debt payment. So it is possible. We'll have to see if that money is still a motivating factor for Venezuela. If it's temporarily frozen, thanks for the update,.

And analysts in more than one hundred twenty countries. I'm Mark mills. This is Bloomberg Paul or thanks very much, Mike, we've got Raymond young with us. He's chief economist for greater China at a ends at Bank, Raymond. Of course, we were talking about the US China trade talks, which are happening later this week. Steve Mnuchin of coal saying enforcement is going to be a critical to getting a good deal. There's also the issues of I p v the allegations all that that's going to be a thorny one. So what is the low hanging fruit in the room with both sides can walk away at the end of the week and and claim a win of sorts? That China's winning to buy more. I believe that's on the a soybean energy from the US so studio unstable, and that's exactly the same. As what happened last may when you visit the Washington DC, and I'd like to get. The US to buying had the idea that China's wing to close the gap. I think that that we will concert happened. So what happened is China also say about what the US would not do anything all off to shrink the same. And then joins day menu. Pizza what happened last year? But then this time around that they would be very cautious about what Trump's going to have another twits ROY after the meeting. So I think this is the what the monkeys also watching. So after these talk day movie. The issue about what happened over the next few days other than eating will also be very important. You know, we've known for a while. Now that the growth rate in China is slowing. I I I'd like to get your take on the degree to which the trade war is contributing to that in China and this week, Raymond we're going to hear from Alibaba. In terms of earnings. I don't know whether you believe that's a reliable lens through which we should kind of view, the Chinese consumer and kind of analyze the strength of the consumer based on any retail sales that may come either from Alibaba or as we look ahead to the lunar new year. But I on the topic of of the contribution of the trade war on weaker growth in China big dealer or not so much. Yeah. The expert number we will call area that we know that being the expert contract is hold on percents. And we expect that the next two sets fake rosy continue in the first quarter because a new. Lasca? So last year's already down you. You know below fifty emus is already pointing to contractions over the next few months. So you means that the first half economic numbers from China. Very bad exploiting. Poacher surprising tax. We'll be heading to negatives old economic data. We showed that China is going to have a savvy slow economic growth in the first quarter. We'll be even down to six volunteer to send in the first quarter. So I think that this is also something China would like to we've and continue to government laws more conscious cynical policies was about to ask you about that. I mean with seeing the government already perform a little bit of targeted stimulus. What more policies? Do you expect to see? Sean become very, you know, age if you know, not say creative. So last Friday, the ham has launched a numerical central banks. Do slobby noted Busey T one capital off of the banking sector at the same time that over the next few months and a lot more discussion. We'll be on the extent of the rate cut it all the tax cuts. So these all these will be especially fearful enough to be a national people conquests in March so mall mall, discuss policy. We'll be onto title what about domestic demand, and the the health of the Chinese consumer I mentioned Alibaba and we're looking forward to the lunar new year holiday. Yeah. Duckie I'm spot on. I think that's his Alibaba. Sales will be a good indication calls. It ends up China which has been low because of the stock market's performance last year's been overall Asia. So what he's done by twenty six percent for the years from the peak? So this is really a something that Chinese companies focusing on the customer confidence retail how has been doing well, and the new year will also be Chinese Chinese policymakers and look at whether they can stay in the country or go elsewhere and they show, but it it goes somewhere else to sell broaden, you know, stay in the country. So this is also these type of statistics all indications. Will also be watched closely by this policy makers. And Raymond tens of watching things closely just quickly which earnings you must closely watching this week. Kalsa is the busy week in the decisive straight talks in Costa markets, also. Mention the politics of the. Day tons going on Kate Delaney broadcasting from Sedona Arizona hey everybody, so let's jump I to, the I'm, going to jump to the flying drones I think this is the craziest story in the photo that. I saw was frightening so President Nicolas Maduro claims he was the subject of an assassination plot using explosive rigged drones, and. They say it's the? He. Says it's the people who are far right Venezuelan exiles living in Florida and. Columbia that we're, after him, Maduro was. They, both. Escaped uninjured smoke. Could be seen. Coming out of a building window at the. Site of the incident he promised a crackdown on his rivals valuing to bring down. The people responsible no matter. Who falls he said this is absolutely an attempt to kill me, and there were number of, a number, of suspects arrested without elaborating any further on who they were they talked about it was really crazy. To see the photos from and I have to say you could see that his wife sort of ducked and Know it's weird because Madero has been in. Power for how long now as you've, got hundreds of thousands of Venezuelans fleeing, the country food medicine. Does not, available inflation sky high ridiculous he's a socialist. Leader he took over for the butcher Hugo Chavez in two thousand thirteen and he's accused the opposition. And the United States of working together to kind of come up, with a coup to topple, him but who knew us the drowns because the drones Can carry something explosive and so, this is how he says the latest attempt is to use the drones to do that it wasn't. About drones but closer to home sad tales again coming out of Chicago I know many of you listen to us in the great state of Illinois and I. Gotta tell you as a kid loved going to Chicago to visit. My aunt Nancy and seeing. The ballpark's and eating the food meeting the people I thought it was just a great city but you know sixty three people. Shot ten fatally and there's more that are shaky at. This point and there is a two and a half hour period where twenty five people were shot in these by different multi, injury shootings than the people were at barbecues peop-. People were doing what. You do early on a Saturday night this happened before eight o'clock, you had three people who were standing in front of a house when a shooter got out of the car and opened fire, there's a seventeen year old girl that was killed Who had, nothing to do with any of this and I said this. On a previous show, but look these gang. Idiots if they're, gonna kill each other. Kill each other don't kill innocent people what what is life worth if you're, just shooting into crowds that's ridiculous and Chicago's a nightmare it's a nightmare with this stuff, so, Rahm Emanuel the mayor get it together figure out task forces. Whatever you have to do I know that's, a Mary Poppins kind of approach but there has to be a way to crack down on this. It's it's outrageous do something lock them up do figure out a way way to patrol these areas and I don't blame the cops because again what is it. That you do how do you write this and the answers the. Answers aren't easily available but. There has to be some other way to combat this we're goodness sake speaking of combating something that's out of control massive fire. In northern California this wildfire destroying sixty eight homes Forcing thousands of people, to flee, the area it's. The fifth largest now the state, it's like numbers, getting big numbers used. To? Be something exciting not? Exciting when you're talking about fires, nobody wants to be the victim. Of the fifth largest fire ever. But you have. High temperatures, again strong wind. And what happens it, makes the fire spread so. Mendez CENA's one of the seventeen major wildfires burning, across California and the president on Sunday had to declare a major. Disaster in the, state ordering, federal funding to, be made available to help the recovery efforts saying that. Was what they had to do and these, systems can help for temporary housing? Home repairs low cost loans? Whatever it takes but this is bad and, you've got firefighters who are trying to contain that horrible car. Fire and they. They say that they're calling it it's about, forty one percent or so. Contained but these fires in college A nasty bit of business, where people have no real Ways to to to fight the fire other than to get out when they're told they. Had to evacuate so they can save their their lives as we've heard of, some sad stories of people who did not get out and it was too, late for, them to to save the, people because the. You know, the fire just. Engulf them which is horrific. I mean just absolutely terrible let's move to something else You know as. We kind, of perversely say. That America tonight is about You know what our buzz in the backyard what we're talking about and. We're talking about a whole bunch of things is what we're talking about, whether we're talking about what's happening in, our lives with kids in school or whether we're talking about the weather whether we're talking about taxes or talking about something. Else that, affects all of us and what affects us is the economics What what else affects us is the economics of, what's going. On in our? In our respective areas like. For example as I travel I don't know how people can afford to live in California and how, can they can afford speaking of this wildfires having an unfortunate there and, how they can afford to live in, New York I'm stunned by the amount of taxes they pay in both those both of those areas just crazy absolutely crazy Hi so, how about this the president was pretty happy, over the weekend he touted his approval rating he says you know what. It might be a red wave and what he said in a. In a tweedy said presidential approval numbers are very good strong economy military and. Just about. Everything else better numbers than Obama at this point by far we are. Winning on just about every front and for that reason there will not be a, Blue Wave but there may be a red. Wave forty eight percent of likely voters approve of Trump's job performance according to Rasmussen that's one report. They release that, just a couple, of days ago Gallup has the president with a forty percent approval rating compared to Obama's Forty-five real clear politics says Trump's approval rating on the economy is that fifty point three that's the rating. And the overall job approval since at forty three over the weekend the president was at a rally. In Ohio He talked about You know a couple. Of different things he's, stumping for, Republicans of course. Around the country that's the main reason here ahead of the. November midterm elections so that was a big reason for that because you've got Democrats who are slight favors favor to take over. The lower chamber so that's the job of the pres- to look at the rest. Of the team and so he's either doing those rallies or being part. Of the rallies and then Stumping for whoever.
