Vice President Harris, Do Women Not Have Access to Reproductive Healthcare?

"Go ahead. Capital to start a small business, they can participate more fully. And our democracy grows stronger. When women have access to reproductive health care to stay healthy. Do women not have access to reproductive health care? Where is this? Do they not have access to it? We have Medicaid. We have Medicare. We have obamacare. We have free health. Institutions. We have free emergency care. I mean, I didn't know this was a problem. Is it a problem? Still and if it's a problem, so I don't get it. We've had Democrat presidents. We've had Democratic Congresses. What's the problem? What does she mean more access to abortion? Is that what she's trying to say? Is that what they mean by reproductive health, which is a reproductive health for the baby? That's for sure. So you're not supposed to be talking about gender as if there's Women and men, And yet she mentions women constantly. So they move in and out of their own perverse ideological world. Depending on Where they need to stop to make their assertion. And she never presents herself for questions. People have said she hasn't had a press conference. God knows how long maybe she did. Maybe she did. I don't much care. There's a reason why the Democrats Rejected her early very early as a potential president. She's been a disaster.

Returning to the Public Eye, Trump Will Head to US-Mexico Border

"Trump is set to visit the US Mexico border this week, just days after Vice President Kamala Harris made her own visit to Texas. Both trips come at a time when many Republicans are describing the situation at the border as a quote crisis with unauthorized crossings at their highest level in decades. NPR's Joel Rose covers immigration and joins us now. Hi, Joel. Hey, Sarah. What do we know about Trump's upcoming visit? Well. He's expected to visit the Rio Grande Valley in Texas on Wednesday, along with Texas Governor Greg Abbott and a group of congressional Republicans, and they're essentially trolling the Biden administration by highlighting the high number of border crossings this year. Here's some of what Trump said last night at a rally in Ohio Illegal aliens are Overrunning their borders. Nobody's ever seen anything like it. Our poor borders was so perfect. They were so good. The rhetoric from that rally should sound very familiar to anyone who's followed former President Trump and the way he often talks about immigrants as a threat. And a burden. He is still very much on that message. It does sound familiar. We mentioned vice President Harris was at the border to what did she have to say? Right? Harris visited El Paso on Friday. It was her first trip to the border since President Biden named her to lead the administration's effort to stem migration from Central America. She met with immigration officials in El Paso, also with immigrant advocates there. Here's some of what she had to say afterwards to reporters. The work that we have to do is the work of addressing the cause. The root causes. Otherwise, we'll continue to see the effect what is happening at the border. Harris has gotten some criticism for not coming to the border sooner. She said that this trip builds on her earlier visit to Central America, where she's trying to deal with those root causes.

"Vice president kamala harris will be visiting el paso texas tomorrow to see the immigration crisis and the us mexican border firsthand. She was tasked by the white house with dealing with the root causes of immigration from central america and will be visiting alongside homeland security secretary. Alejandro may orcas. That much seems objectively true. How you view the rest of the story depends on the perspective you bring to it. Her visit will come days before a former president. Donald trump also goes to the border june thirtieth moments after harris's trip was announced. Mr trump took credit for her visit to the border and criticized the administration for ending several of his immigration policies. However white house press secretary. Jen psaki denied that the trip was a political decision. Determined by the former presidents planned visit to the border as with so much of our policies. These days what you believe depends on who you believe. In news of far less significance a group of soccer fans accidentally traveled to romania to watch their team. Play the reason they mixed up budapest and bucharest. Going to the ladder win. The match they wanted to see was in the former. The two cities are five hundred eighteen miles apart until they got downtown in the romanian capital and realized their mistake. They were certain they were in the right city. But sincerity is no substitute for truth. One of them said later to learn more about europe. another story making. Headlines is the announcement by las vegas raiders. Defensive end nassib. That he is gay. Nfl commissioner roger. Goodell's response caught my eye. The nfl family is proud of carl for courageously sharing his truth today. We've been discussing this week. The importance and urgency of believing in sharing biblical truth in the day. When so many believe thought truth to be my truth today. Let's consider the courage takes to tell people truth. They don't want to hear as our partisan divides continue to widen and deepen. It is becoming more and more difficult to disagree agreeably. Historian nile ferguson is right political. Figures are increasingly being viewed from a religious context as their followers bestow on them equality of infallibility. Some who support or oppose. Mr trump do so with sentiments bordering on religious zeal for example ferguson warns that some are doing the same with what they call the science he explains. There is no such thing as the science. Of course there are scientists. My sister is physicist at yale. And they'll tell you there are sciences plural and it's a constantly shifting dynamic system in which ideas are tested and frequently found to be false. None the less he notes. The science has been used during the pandemic to claim near infallibility for a person's beliefs in a culture. Where so many are convinced that their truth is the truth. It takes genuine courage to speak truth that others don't want to hear but such courage is part of what it means to follow jesus in a fallen world theologian yergin maltman noted faith wherever it develops into hope causes. Not rest but unrest. Not patience but impatience. It does not come. The une quieted heart but is itself this unquiet heart in man. Those who hope in christ can no longer put up with reality as it is but begin to suffer under it to contradict it. Peace with god means conflict with the world for the goad of the promised future stabs inexorably into the flash of every unfulfilled present. In other words. When we know the truth of god we feel a god given imperative to share it with those who do not. This is one of the points. I wish i could help. More people understand in the escalating debate over the equality act and lgbtq writes those of us who proclaim and defend biblical morality. Do so not. Because we want to discriminate against lgbtq people but because we want them to know and experience god's best for their lives. I understand that many do not understand this. And see my statement as justification for homophobia. But as i know in my heart it's not. It would far easier for us to go along to get along to avoid all the rancor in vitriol that is rising against those who stand for god's word we are compelled to help others experienced the grace we have experienced when the apostles were ordered by the authorities to stop preaching the gospel. It obviously would have been safer for them to comply. Instead they responded. We must obey god rather than men in acts five twenty nine. After paul met jesus it would have been far safer for him to keep quiet about his new faith but he was willing to undergo unspeakable suffering from the opponents of the gospel rather than cease preaching it to them. The reason was simple. They were so grateful for the love. They hit experienced that they had to offer others. The grace that had changed their lives in a room called. Remember frederick beaten. Observes the final secret i think is this that the words you shall love the lord your god become in the end less command than a promise and the promises that yes and the weary feet of faith and the fragile wings of hope we will come to love him at last as from the first he has loved us loved us even in the wilderness especially in the wilderness because he has been in the wilderness with us he has been in the wilderness for us. He has been acquainted with our grief and loving him. We will come at last to love each other to. Your father loves you right now. Even in the wilderness. Will you pay forwards such grace today. "To help ensure a brighter future for america's children more information is available at a e f dot org an internal investigation found that a cop with the california highway patrol sexually harassed twenty one women but those findings were kept secret until a new state. Transparency law passed. We dug through hours of tapes to find out what happens officers. Who crossed the line. Listen to on our watch a podcast from npr and kick u. e. d. And we're back before we we keep talking about congress Aisha what else do we know about this white house meeting tomorrow for the same group of texas lawmakers and we know that as we said here is. She's the point person on this issue. She's supposed to meet with these democrats. It's not really clear. Like what exactly is going to come out of this. Meeting harris is trying to build support among stakeholders in basically build pressure to get something done. But it's it's not really super tangible at this point what the outcomes could be. This is just such like a marathon of various point person things being in high profile because she goes right from a trip from guatemala and mexico right into the beginning of this bus tour. She's gonna be doing to try and boost vaccine awareness and convince people to get vaccines and then the very next day voting rights thing. So it's like all the items one day in a row. It's kind of a high profile meeting right now and all of them are like very difficult. Maybe the vaccinations aren't quite as difficult but like immigration harm and voting rights. They're very tough to get done. And they're not things that get done overnight so speaking of things not getting done over the motto of the united states senate seat bring us up to speed on what the time line is for the various high profile voting rights bills that are in front of the senate. Well there's a couple of things. The house has already passed the bill. That's known as hr one that. Is this massive overhaul of and campaign finance laws and anti corruption practices. It's a behemoth of a bill and it's democrats. What they say is their number one priority. The senate is going to take up their version of that bill next week It's probably going to be slightly different. But the core of it will remain the same. This is one of those things that we know. It's a bit of a foregone conclusion. Every senate republican opposes this legislation mansions on the record saying he's not going to support it so we know it's going to fail but it is at least going to give the senate an opportunity to have this big voting rights debate next week and what i think that leaders are trying to do here is at least move the needle of public opinion a little bit and see if they can sort of increase. The pressure on people like mansion. Although i don't know how much pressure you can apply to joe manchin to get him to change his mind because he's been pretty definitive about this And then they're going to have to move on another interesting question. Outside of this big behemoth bill is voting rights legislation. there's also separate legislation to update the voting rights act of nineteen sixty five that would Reinstate some of the protections in pre clearances that the supreme court Throughout in back in two thousand thirteen. Joe manchin supports that bill. Republicans like senator lisa murkowski of alaska support that bill. They have the votes in the house to probably pass that bill. So i think once we get over this senate vote next week. They're going to pivot to this other legislation and one of the questions is could that possibly get the support it needs although i think there's good reason to be skeptical And that seems like a smaby maybe more likely vehicle to get some traction congress because it has what each are one and s one don't have and that's at least some bipartisan buying. But then it's just another version of the same cast of characters being chased in the hallway is always you are once again walking through to ask whether they can vote it right. I mean we're talking about the same small group of senate republicans. Who might be persuaded but probably won't be totally and look like take a step back for a minute. There is a look at what's happening here. Republicans are very successfully on the state level advancing walls to change or restrict The way that they're states conduct elections. Now there's a lot of democratic criticism in there. Obviously democrats are attacking all of these bills. Not all is controversial as democrats Would lead you to believe even some elections specialists say that there's good things in parts of these bills but it's the politics in which they're being passed that have really divided the two parties right and just to say it out loud in this podcast because we talked about it a lot before and we need to say it here to. It's the fact that a lot of the motivation for a lot of these bills is the false false false claim pushed by former president trump. That the twenty twenty election was fraudulent. Sure but like here's the tax of it right. Republicans are succeeding at actually changing. The laws and democrats are not and democrats on the federal level. Don't have the votes today. They don't seem to have the votes in any point in the horizon. And if you believe and you take people like speaker pelosi and chuck schumer at their word. This a five alarm fire for the future of democracy so there's a lot of frustration in the democratic party that they are basically right now capable of doing nothing to counteract. What's happening in the states. And i think you're hearing it more and more certainly from progressives in congress who think they're squandering a little bit of their political capital focus so much on infrastructure all the time that they should be you know get this infrastructure thing done and let's really focus the way to the party on voting rights and election reform. Lot of stuff waiting for joe biden when he gets back from europe busy days. So we're we're going to wrap up this conversation but on that note we will be back in your feeds tomorrow talking about everything that happened at that. Big summit between joe biden and vladimir putin.

"Us now with oriole ruez soto. Who is a policy analyst at the migration policy institute arielle. Welcome back to the show and given me so. What is the significance of vice president harris's trip to mexico and guatemala. Well first of all. I think it signifies that there's going to be a different use approach to the region one. That's focused on co-responsibility and really seeing the capacity so his governments to have a larger role in migration management meaning not just immigration control efforts but also thinking about communitarian pathways Legal employment opportunities to come to united states or to mexico in that scenario and understand and coordinated development easier. I'm more effectively going forward. Of course two visits are not going to change things overnight but they do pointing to it the the a good direction and understanding how to change the dynamics and how to make sure that the governments can do more and should do more In their own neighborhood.

"How is it they get to pick and choose which laws they want to obey enforce which ones they don't well sure and that's a great question i mean you look at the leadership in texas and you look at some of the disturbing trends right eight hundred percent increase in sentinel seizures. Right and the governor down there is taking you know. Full speed ahead. You know making sure. The people of texas protected what you look at some of the things that are with the ranches and the dead bodies and the you know the children that they're finding and now that haridas go new generation cartel just absorb the cartel. Del golfo at the border. So we're gonna start seeing more and more violence more and more. You know interactions but showing let me go back to a really important point. We talk about the corruption in central america. I mean most people don't realize that the former congressman tony anandas. The brother of the honduran president is serving life in prison. He was convicted in new york on drug charges. But here's the thing. He was distributing one hundred and eighty five tons of cocaine. One hundred eighty five tonnes his brother. The president was on the allegations that choppers mon and other members of the cartel were paying into his political. You know you know his presidential. You know hope you know to win the election in in honduras. The point is is that this the corruption is well known just talked to d. h. s. and b. o. j. entities going down. There is a waste of time and it was quite embarrassed and as as a citizen to see the signs about harris. Go home like we don't want you here right. They know what's going. On trump won their signed. It takes time trump one right look at the encounters from april of twenty two april of twenty one a nine hundred and forty four percent increase. Look at the drug seizures right. You look at this year alone in the first seven months sixty four hundred ninety four pounds offense and all that's three hundred and seven percent increase over the first seven months From last year you look at the entire last year. The numbers will only forty seven seventy six pounds so the seizures a drugs and napa one hundred and five thousand pounds and bats. Fishes something sean. It's hard to even comprehend the lack of action from our government leaders right. How do you explain this. And then the cities that it just getting destroyed i. I don't even know how to explain it. You know when people ask like what's going on with the government. I thought there was supposed to be law. And order. Because without lauren. On a showing. You don't have anything i mean. It doesn't matter how much money people have and the wealth and the fancy cars and boats because the crime is so bad now. The police are leaving as you know. Very well sean. I've been there when gang members arrested i've been to drug warehouses i've seen tunnels i've seen it all and it was bad then but it's never been this bad three months consecutively now The highest numbers. We've seen in in twenty to thirty years in terms of illegal immigrants getting into this country and nobody is being turned back and spider. What kamla harris setting guatemala yesterday. Yes sean all those trips you made came about because you were open to new ideas. You were open to evidence into research and to the historical archaeology of talking to people in real time. I think it really doesn't matter if vice president harris goes to the border because she's already made her mind and her team. They've made up their minds as well about what they plan to do. She's put She's blaming all of what's happening at the border not on the rhetoric of the biden administration or their decision to reverse key parts of the Immigration policy of president trump's such as completing the border wall They've decided that what's going on is due to climate change to Food insecurity to the lack of Adaptability within the country's the lack of climate resilience All of these factors. She's putting in place New initiatives such as having empowerment programs for young women so that they can Find employment and have better self esteem in central america. There's a task force that's being stood up on combating human trafficking and drug smuggling and corruption. We already know about these things. What at this point would a trip to the border do for comma harris. She has her plan. I mean the idea. That answer was just so equal. I am ben europe either. What does that have to do with anything. With telling the truth. She was good point and derek. The reality is is. We've had our cameras down there for months now and we've been on the border we ben where the drug smugglers and human traffickers are Been we got our cameras. They wouldn't allow them in to the facilities the cages that they were building for these kids. That were so overcrowded in the middle of a pandemic. We're hearing now. From the governor's that you know discovered that there are all these people dumped on their doorstep. And now it's their responsibility financially and otherwise to to to take care of people because joe biden kamala harris refused to enforce the laws of the land..

And it just goes to show you how malignant our media is You know not only. Did they scratch fat but you know they defend it school closings. We're seeing that really wasn't necessary. Children being forced to wear masks in some places they still have to think about what that does to the socialization project process of a young child. Who doesn't get to associate facial expression with verb it. That's going to have a long time Deleterious impact You know they're supporting the teacher. Unions i you know the tea just that i knew grow up. Well wonderful people you know. They want it to pitch at with their mission in life and they've supported the city lockdowns. We were seeing that the only thing that really contributed to destroy it. And you know it just goes on and on The media is extraordinarily my lateness. And the other thing that that they're not doing. And i hope i do some voices starting now to say that natural. Immunity is just as good as the immunity derive from vaccines. You know has been getting beat up over this as rand. Paul is i. Think the first senator to contract covid nineteen and and that's his argument. He said well. I'm not. I feel as a doctor medical doctor with t cell immunity even if the immunity levels in your body go down which they naturally would with any virus this still memory inside the t. cells one's body if they had contracted cova correct absolutely and there's no reason that it would be any different than any other infectious disease process. Nevertheless certain people want control everything. So they're saying if you've had it and you've got that trim unity you still need to be back and we're talking about an experimental because the eu it just not actually fda approved at this stage. We don't know what the long term impact we do know that. Sometimes you can have some disturbances if you immunize somebody who's already and so and we. We definitely don't know what the long term impact is with children and we have children who have extremely low morbidity and mortality associated with covid nineteen and yet we're saying you have to take vaccination now. I don't have any problem with people who wanna take but those who don't want to take it. We shouldn't be in a position of trying to force them to do that. That was never the purpose of government and our founding fathers envisioned it and you know that has everything to do with freedom in this country and liberty you make information available to people and then you let them decide how they want to you live that and this is a precursor to tell the terrorism..

That's the earliest point during this crisis. And then he went out there and allowed this whole you know debunked theory conspiracy theory. Anybody that dared raised questions senator. She has long been an advocate of gain of function research which is inherently dangerous and risky and hazardous because it can create pandemics. And he didn't care about that he's been advocating for the last fifteen years. And so what do you do well. It looks like he covered it all up. perhaps to avoid implicating himself his own complicity Three point five million deaths worldwide and in steady pedaled What appears to be a false alternative You know that it happened in bat soup for a wet market in the wild guess. What after sixteen months. There's no evidence that the virus emerge. Naturally where's the infected bat population. It hasn't been found. No immediate host has been located. Thousands of sean failed to come up with a scintilla of evidence that a virus in nature jump from animals to humans. And you know. I think it's likely there's no cleavage side. Because it never existed to begin with and found. She knew that what he knew. Also was that this very Laboratory in wuhan that he had been funding Was doing the kind of hazardous dangerous research experiments. That could have precipitated. The pandemic we have talked at length on this program. You and i about okay. Why are some laws. Apply to some people but not other people. I mean roger. Stone i think is a perfect case in point. Roger stone was charged with lying to congress in his case. He had a predawn raid. You know thirty guys. Tactical gear frogman tipped off. Cnn cameras and they wanted to put him in jail for what ten years. Seven eight nine ten years. Whatever it was and here. You have michael horowitz and referrals for top. fbi upper echelon people that those referrals go nowhere. If you have somebody like dr fauci. Nobody's ever gonna go after dr fauci. We have joe biden picking and choosing that. Well he doesn't want to enforce the laws at our borders and keep them secure as the law requires and not only is he allowing the lawbreaking but he's aiding and abetting those the break the law by providing housing and then later transportation to other states forcing states to then care for people at a very high cost to them because he's insisting to allow illegal immigration but they always seem to get away with it on the left..

We also learned from science journalists. Nicholas wade that. The echo health alliance had a grant from his age to gain of function research on corona viruses at the wuhan institute of technology. Does that mean that flip-flop fao. She'd lied and if he did before. Congress is that a crime anyway joining us now. Gregg jarrett fox news analyst and host of his own. Podcast the brief sir. Welcome back to the program. My pleasure is always i you know. I do think that found. He lied and he could be criminally charged for his deliberate deceptions in life. We'd be all know. This will never happen because unless you're a conservative you don't get held accountable. But it doesn't. It doesn't dismiss the fact that he did lie. Absolutely he insisted in his testimony. Repeatedly sean that none of the money he sent to the wuhan lab was used for dangerous gain of function research but these newly under its emails show that he was warned that that had happened. The covid nineteen virus look potentially engineered in the laboratory that scientists who created a lethal superbug more virulent in contagious in the emails further show that he became very worried that in fact he had been complicit in creating this deadly pandemic And so obviously he wasn't truthful and forthcoming to congress when he testified. Only that after his testimony sean he actually himself And his testimony by conceding that the money he sent could have been used for gain of function research. So you know it seems to me. There should be absolutely a criminal investigation into whether fao she lied to congress. He wasn't under oath so you can't charge them with perjury. But then matter even charge him with making a fault and misleading statement of congress under eighteen. Usc one thousand and one gets the identical crime as perjury. in fact it has an equival an equivalent sentencing five years for every lie and it seems to me live more than once in his stuff so money could be charged with something facing ten fifteen twenty years behind. Joe manchin of preserving jim crow congresswoman. A cossio or cortez is out there. Suggesting mansion is participating in an effort to dismantle democracy. None of this is true. Social justice warrior. Jamal jamal hill calling mansion a power hungry white dude who is upholding white supremacy. You know maybe this explains the utter terror. If you dare go against the squad you know. That's why joe won't stand up against a squad. Nancy won't stand up against this squad. Chucky won't stand up against the squad and now the these attacks are getting fierce because their agendas being left behind because it is radical you know mansion apparently unmoved he said on tuesday that he had a constructive meeting with a group of civil rights leaders but he was not changing his opposition to ask dr one he met with al sharpton. He met with the n. Double acp president derrick johnson. If the meeting changed his position he added. No i don't think anybody changed positions on that new york times. Editorial board is now some reason. My earphones just went through the roof anyway. New york times editorial board member. Mary gay finds of american flags in long island apparently disturbing because apparently they're mixed with trump flags in a few anti biden signs. I was on long island this weekend. Visiting dear friend and i was really disturbed. I saw in a dozen and dozens of pickup trucks with split goes against joe biden on the back of them trump lags and some cases just dozens of american flags which is also just disturbing because essentially the message was clear was this is my country. This is not. You're not intriguing. I own this and so until we're ready to have that conversation. This is going to continue all right. So the bottom line is reminds me a lot of joe lieberman with for a long time kleiber. Now attacking mansion saying this democracy is on fire joyless bay saying mansion is blocking democrats from saving the country house. Democrats while at the senate again to vote on january six commission. Well will they also vote to investigate the two hundred and seventy five riots. Where thousands of cops were you know. We've got to look into that because both are wrong and shouldn't happen and shouldn't ever happen again and they just had a bipartisan group of senators that examine what happened on january six. Americans are seeing in this crisis. Well we are going to. We have to deal with what's happening at the border. There's no question about that. That's not debatable. Point but we have to understand that. There's a reason people are arriving at our border and asked what is that reason and then identify the problem so we can fix it quickly. Put button okay. You have any plans to visit the border at some point. I we are going to the border. We've been to the border. So this whole this whole this whole thing about the border. We've been to the border we've been to the board into the border and i haven't been to europe and i don't. I don't understand the point that you're making. I'm not discounting the importance of the board. Why she laughing at that and then calmly telling multinational corporations invest in guatemala. How stupid is that. I mean how about the we invest in american manufacturing centers probably most people don't want to because of the high taxes that they know are coming down the road and then she got ripped by the guatemalan president. Who blamed her and joe for what's happening because joe basically said come to the border if i'm elected president but it's still not enough for see who's calling harris's immigration comments disappointing warning migrants. Not to come. We will enforce the law. If you don't like the law you got to change the law harris telling the guatemalan president. VP Harris Heading To Mexico, Guatemala Amid Migration Surge

"Arrives in Guatemala Sunday night. It's her first trip to Central America since President Biden assigned her to tackle the surge in migration from the region. And just yesterday, Harris called Lopez over door to let him know the U. S. Is sending Mexico one million covid 19 vaccines. He tweeted that was very kind of her to call. Their first face to face meeting, however, might be tougher. U. S and Mexico relations have hit some bumps lately, especially when it comes to sharing security, intelligence and U. S funding of Mexican free speech groups. Carlos Heredia, Mexican economist at the Center for Research in Teaching and Economics, says Lopez over door was very comfortable with Donald Trump, mostly because the former president stayed out of Mexico's affairs. Trump only cared about Mexico stopping Central American migrants from getting to the U. S. So now it's different. And the president of Mexico does not feel comfortable dealing with a neighbor that is opinionated and has A lot to say about issues that should be of common interest. Both countries have found common ground when it comes to migration, saying they want to attack the root causes. Like lack of economic opportunities in corruption. The Biden administration has repeatedly called Mexico an essential partner in achieving that goal. But tonight you G in. Lopez, a researcher at the National Autonomous University of Mexico, says both countries talk that humanitarian talk but continued to attack the problem only with police and the military, especially in Mexico.

"No. This President Harris has described her grandmother as somebody who did not have a high school education but who was very active in her community and was a leader somewhat in her community. I think she has said that she would go out into the villages and distribute and talk about birth control and contraception, and her grandfather was Say, you know, your mother is going to make, you know. Get me out of a job joke. Um, So while her mother was not channel his mother was not educated, um, in the conventional sense, uh, descriptions of her really that she was quite progressive, very active in the community, and the leader in her care of what I was trying to explore is is we wear these attributes to become a pilot. Nearing immigrant to the United States came from and it sounds is in the scenes of progressivism on her mother's part eyes. 11 answer to that question, And another answer is progressivism on her father's part in Indian families, especially back then it's really the father who would make the decision that still whether you know, a 1919 year old daughter is going to travel thousands of miles away to go and study my senses. That Pamela's father had been was very progressive in his beliefs in a way that I think was unusual at the time and again, That's all has Tyson with sort of It is being a high ranking Indian bureaucrat, having sort of a more expansive view over the world. When Sharma Gopalan arrived at Berkeley to pursue her graduate studies, what was that campus like at the time it really was a hotbed of activism. The civil rights movement was really nearing a tight U. C. Berkeley was at the center of it. There was a free speech movements that happened around that time. There was a movement on confit, Tonto lift up African American academics and writers. Uh, so shallow is part of a group of students who would get together. Off campus in the evenings and discuss James Baldwin and Ralph Ellison. And it was a time that was very it's you know, when you think about Berkeley. I think the images that that evokes for a lot of people is really this time, this moment in Berkeley and when campus life was really dynamic and rich, and, um Vietnam War was happening and students were protesting the war, eh? So there was a lot going on on the UC Berkeley campus at the time that Shana logo one arrived on C SPAN radio. This is Q and day. Our guest this week is journalist recalls Sharma, Ronnie. She joined a group of Berkeley's Afro American Association, which had a important role in the black power movement in the United States since development. Can you talk about her interest in joining that, and the group's acceptance of her as someone with different routes? You know, this was really fascinating. And I spoke with Cem Cem, former students at UC Berkeley who were in this Afro American association with her, and she was the only non black member and when I asked about this one of her lifelong friends, Aubrey Liberace Who vice President Harris refers to as Uncle Aubrey said that it wasn't really a question whether or not they would let her join. There was no discussion. There was no sort of formal meeting to say, but we allow her to join. It was meant to be an association for black students. I think she just sort of melted into that group and really developed very strong relationships with the student's neck. Group. I also think that there was a broader Zor socio political context that was happening at that time. The black Yeah. How our movement was was seen is connected to the broader movement against colonialism. India had been a colonial a colony of the British had gotten its independence in 1947. This was 10 years later. But there really was this connection. Um, people's lives between the global anti colonial struggle and the civil rights movement in the U. S. So Martin King Jr had talked about, um, his inspiration and taking inspiration from Mahatma Gandhi. Um, they weren't seen as, um You think they were seeing is part and parcel of the same fight at those civil rights, organizational events and protests is where time I met. Donald Harris on ultimately married him in 1963 What he's still alive. He's still professor emeritus at Stanford. But what can you tell us about his influence on the family? Um So I think that we look we know less about Donald Harris. Um, he, uh, big divorce. Sharmila and Donald Harris divorced When Vice President Harris was around seven years old, they would see him on weekends. They would go visit during the summer for a time. Channel A and her two daughters come on. Maya had moved to Montreal. And so we're a fair distance from their father. I would say his influence really can ties to the her parents of activism, their beliefs sort of in social justice. I think life's channeling Donald was very much involved in the Afro American Association. In fact, he was I remember before her he would give talks off campus about civil rights on dissociate. Only that I think has carried over into his daughter, just as it has from her mother. Their relationship Now there has been, You know, some apparent tensions I will present to know. What their relationship is. Now, there was a moment moment during the campaign where Vice President Harris had made a joke, You know, sort of, I guess making light of the stereotype of the Jamaican stereotype of, you know, smoking weed and her father had taken exception to that publicly, So I think whatever his influence, Twas would have been her Early on in her life earlier on in her life, I think that the president was very much raised by her mother. "Who was in charge again as i've said many times from the campaign until now the differences between trump and biden could not be more noticeable even based on the analysts on tv or everything. I saw on social media. I think we all felt better. Now that there is real experience back in the white house all breathe just a bit easier. I mean when you really get down to it when you think about it. It was basically in escape from a four year hostage. Situation trump controlled our lives for four years with his unpredictability in the way he always made everything a culture issue. You simply could not escape him. He came up in conversation with friends and family a lot and whether you supported him or not became a true point of division now we have real human beings who are decent empathetic back in charge. Not only that but with the diversity biden is bringing in the white house. Looks more like america than has in quite some time. I have to say it really hit me when vice president harris with swearing in those three new senators. You had a latino man from california a black man from georgia and a jewish man from georgia. Who's like thirty three. And they were all being sworn in by the first female the first black in the first south asian vice president. That's what america is supposed to be. That's what those terrorist tried to stop two weeks ago when they stormed the capital. They were afraid because the administration didn't look as much like them and that made them so scared that they got angry. They got so angry that they turn that into an action but we won in today lost honestly even from the point when everybody started showing up to the inauguration. The people in the crowd behind biden wearing masks. You could just feel that if you could just feel that things were different there. Wasn't anybody bullying these people around into net wearing them and vice president harris even war one when she was on the senate floor. What a concept. I also realize until last night that it was fifty years ago. Yesterday that jfk was inaugurated. He's a personal hero or personal fascination of mine so i thought that was cool. Another thing i want to get out of the way right away is that yes. I'll be referring to joe and kamla as president and vice president more today than i said president trump ever and yes. That does seem biased. However like i said a while back. When i initially addressed in i call people by their title when they act like they're title. Trump never acted presidential. So i never felt like. He deserved to be referred to as president. In fact that's what i mean by. This show is more informal than regular news because even by using those titles you normalize trump. What trump did what trump was. Were not normal and. We can't think that they were. They were awful disgraceful. And we can't ever let that happen again now onto president biden and his busy. I two days in office yesterday evening. He signed fifteen executive orders in two executive actions. So what's the difference between the executive orders and executive actions. Well an executive order is legally binding so it means more an executive action on the other hand is basically just symbolic so. Let's go over those but be warned. I'm not always sure. Which ones are the orders in. Which ones are the actions when you read about them. The news media treats them like they're interchangeable and they're just not at all. There were about nine different categories of things that biden addressed. I in terms of masks. He signed an order requiring masks and social distancing all federal buildings in all federal property and by all federal employees and contractors anti even more masked ball signing the bill which sent a huge message other orders included stopping the united states from withdrawing from the world health organization which is a great thing for people worldwide extending applause on student loan payments and housing foreclosures. And actually even saw just now that they put student loan interest at zero percent. So it won't be accumulating interest for however long it goes for. There are several big ones on climate. First rejoining the paris climate accord. Which is making ted cruz. Superman about people in pittsburgh because that was the example trump used when he pulled out of the agreement second revoking the permit for building the keystone pipeline. Which is an action than i didn't. Even know is being considered finally required reviews of trump's policies. That got rid of or weekend. Protections for federal lands as well as a review of the cuts and regulations about fossil fuel emissions. If we're being honest you've heard biden and his team talk more about climate change in the past two days even just yesterday than trump did in four years. This next order was a fun. One president biden revoked. Trump's national emergency declaration about the border wall which means that money that was supposed to be going to other programs will actually go to those programs again. Instead of a wall in mexico supposed to pay for that it also stopped. The building of any new wall until review is done to see how taxpayer money is being spent on the project. Speaking of provoking he also revoked. The muslim bane quote unquote which bans people from seven. Muslim-majority countries. This is the one that i suspect is more of an action than an order. Biden ordered his cabinet to preserve and protect dhaka. The deferred action for childhood arrivals which is relief for hundreds of thousands of people who lived in america all of their life who are technically undocumented since they were brought here by their parents when they were very young staying on that subject of undocumented immigrants there was an order from trump. That said all eleven million people who are undocumented in the. Us were priorities for getting deported in biden revoked that order as well and instructed the department of homeland security to review their enforcement priorities. Actually the last ones here are related to immigration of some sort for the census biden order that every person in america should be counted. You know like it says in the constitution trump tried to exclude undocumented people even though they still do move here which is what. The census is trying to figure out. And lastly this one seems like more proposal than in order. The president issued an order that proposes legislation that would give green cards and a path to citizenship for every undocumented persons. Who was living here before the start of this year before january. First twenty twenty one now all of that was just a one today if he hasn't already done so by the time you hear this president biden plans on signing ten more executive orders as the huffington post points out. Some are more specific than others. The specific ones include things like requiring the department of education in department of health and human services to create new guidelines for reopening schools ordering osha to issue new standards to protect workers from covid ordering female to fully reimbursed dates for various expenses. They had from covid and using the national guard to open and operate one hundred mass vaccination clinics since it sounding like trump and pence left them absolutely in terms of distribution plan and biden also issued in order to develop online dashboards to offer. Kobe related. data. He wants that data to get as detailed as information about your specific county. Another big one was using the defense production act to force quote unquote companies to make supplies. That are necessary for covid related products. These are things like needles and the solution that mixes with the medicine part of the vaccine. Because that's all that's all part of it in another big. One is n ninety five masks which are going to be important in defending against these new mutations. Some of the broader orders are ordering the cdc to work with states update their pandemic plans requesting the creation of a plan to figure out how to speed up development and distribution of therapeutic treatments like remdesivir for example creating public education campaigns about the vaccine to make people more comfortable with them and reminding the different agencies involved about the disparities based on race geography disability etc. To make sure the vaccine is distributed equally. I'm sure this is to prevent people from buying their spot in line. Jumping the line and so we don't forget about the minority communities that have been most affected by this but are also usually forgotten about in these programs overall. It's been a very busy. Twenty four to thirty six hours biden officially sworn in india not necessarily a presidential historian or anything like that. But i would wager that. This has been probably the most productive two days. I two days in any presidency. it has to be. I mean they're also already negotiating a new nuclear deal with russia while also reviewing that cyber attack that i talked about maybe a month ago. I mean maybe it's just. Because i pay such close attention to this stuff but everything seems different already like they are actual plans being made in actions being taken to help people with covid. It doesn't feel like we're just on our own anymore. And he's also trying to weed out the discrimination white supremacism that exists at many many levels of government. And i mean come on compared to four years ago. They didn't even know how to turn on the lights. For god's sake they literally could not find the light switch in the meeting rooms that they were gathering in. They had to speak in the dark and feel their way out of the room. I just picture like one of those ghost hunters shows where they have the night vision on. But it's actually pitch dark for the people investigating so we can see they can't. That's just how i picture this whole thing going down. It really just shows that elections do have consequences. So i this next door get it as soon as published the episode on tuesday here. I was feeling good about saying. Oh yeah they were vetting. All these people these national guard members and they haven't found anyone with any ties to extremism. I hit published on the episode and then boom twelve national guard. Members get removed from their duties for the inauguration. Yeah two of them. Were relieved for possible links to right-wing extremist movements in this is all according to the new york times. The two who were directly linked to the extremists made quote inappropriate comments or sent inappropriate texts according to defense officials. The other ten that were taken out the detail were apparently removed For reasons unrelated to recent events in the capital end quote. I find that hard to believe. But hey i'm not complaining. I'm glad that they were thorough. Enough to find these people according to this article out of the one hundred people that the fbi has arrested so far related to that incident. Six of them have had military ties of some kind. But yeah what timing on that story in. This part isn't actually related to the people getting taken off the detail. But i just want to mention that. The story was behind a paywall on the new york times website. In case you want to get around that without subscribing. There's a website called print. Friendly as in you. Neighbor is just nice unfriendly. And you can copy the u. r. l. link for any story pasted in on print friendly and then basically transforms it into a pdf. Even if it's behind a paywall just a life hack tip.
