This great question and rest assured you're not the first person to encounter the nordic socialism question. We've talked about this at great length and we've posted a couple of videos about about. Here's the long and short of it. Part of the scandinavian model is actually more pro free market than the american model. According to the world economic freedom index norway sweden finland when it comes to small business creation is more economically free. They do have higher taxes but their regulatory environment has a higher likelihood of being able to start businesses. So this idea that they're completely socialist is a little bit of a false started to misnomer rand. Paul even talked about this in his book. The case against socialism was where the head of the denmark government said. Stop calling a socialist to bernie sanders. The book is called debunking. Utopia exposing the myth of nordic socialism. Number two is that norway sweden finland traditionally was able to find some form of model that worked because they incredibly strict immigration. They had immigration levels that they were able to maintain and control. That is not something that the modern democrat party wants entertain anymore. The modern democrat party wants complete and total open borders norway which has the largest sovereign wealth fund on the planet. One trillion dollars has largely because of oil natural guests. Another thing that the left hates. Do you not sweden has full and total school choice. Something that the left also hates in this country they want complete and total government run schools. "To destroy our way of life and thwarts the will of western civilization. I'll say in my speech and you can see it in its entirety on youtube. But since we have a good relationship. Here i wanna give you a little preview. I'm going to say if you do not support breaking up and challenging the tech companies. You are not a conservative. you are a corporatist. You are someone that wants to protect the trillionaire class. and i'm for capitalism. I love entrepreneurship. I think that value creation starting something from nothing is one of the most beautiful aspects of a free market economy pulling yourself up from the boot straps. I have said would. Dennis prager has said his entire life. Favorite word in english languages. Earn e. a. r. n. I love the word earn. It's a uniquely american phrase. I earned this talk about why there is. No bill writes when it comes to tech companies. And how the tech companies on a daily basis violate half the bill of rights. Talk about how. The idea of a private company is a red herring argument when it comes to tech companies. And i really believe the proper framing is menlo. Park verse america. I'll ask the question. Who is more powerful. Google or our government you see. Conservatism should be about the protection of naturally granted. God-given existence and rights not the automatic or dogmatic defense of corporate. America is not what conservatism is about. America is not just another colony for corporate interests to maximize their profits and move on america's our home and has a culture a language a history of people and when a multi trillion air class decides to collectivize. They're highly technological interests for a specific game we as conservatives must rise up against that. I'm also going to make the point of three words. They hate you. they hate your viewpoints. They hate your values they hate your worldview and it will do anything they possibly can to demolish. You make sure you tune in on that. That's a little preview of what we have going there. but we've been talking about my meeting with president trump. at mar-a-lago people seem very interested in this. When i posted the social media picture of trump mar-a-lago. i've gotten more tax more emails. What did he say. What's he thinking. What's going on worse even met with them at the oval office. What you say or what were what were the topics of discussion. Look my big thing was and this is something. We've been trying to talk about here on this program for quite some time which is stay positive. Be optimistic. the democrat party is a nasty dark party. They are always complaining. they're talking about destruction. everything is awful. Wear masks when you shower. You are two masks and you go out in public. I mean people are yearning for that optimistic positive breakthrough and that's part of what i was trying to communicate to president trump which is be the cheerleader for america and be the happy joyful warrior metaphor. Cool of course can't even say that anymore without someone coming after in juxtaposition with the democrats that just seem to want to complain about everything and so there's a very valid concern about how we do elections in this country. It's the number one concern of the conservative base number one. It is the question. I get asked more than any other question. I just finished dinner.

Genocide, why won't world leaders call it what it is?

Genocide, why won't world leaders call it what it is?

"Sounds like term from antiquity. The kind of thing that there might have been an eleventh commandment forbidding it is not the word dates from as recently as nineteen forty four when it was coined by the polish lawyer raphael lampkin to define the holocaust he survived and which dozens of his family did not genocide is also a relatively modern crime though. Humans have fought clan clan tribe on faith on faith and nation or nation for as long as they have been humans. The ambition of completely wiping out an entire bunch of people was substantially thwarted for most of history by the limits of technology. They are arguably cases to be made for rome's destruction of coffee in one hundred and forty six bc and athens conquest of mills to hundred and seventy years before that but the industrialization of extermination is in general and as raffaelle lincoln recognized name modern blights pilot. And i think that's the spirit. The unanimous bill family the biscuit behind by all allstate ratified mile parliaments at the earliest date inaudible advised acumen rights. Forgive given the protection of international law for the sake of progress and international. Lincoln's legacy is the un's nineteen forty eight convention on the prevention and punishment of the crime of genocide and the row continuing unto the present day over what genocide means who is entitled to accuse him of committing it. And what should be done about it if someone has this week. Canada became the second country to officially describe china's repressions of it's largely muslim week minority as genocide. Well after a fashion though the motion passed parliament. Two hundred and sixty six votes to zip canada's prime minister justin trudeau and most of his cabinet sat out. The motion was put forward by the conservatives. Who called on the liberals to send a united message about human rights. The vote was non-binding although it was backed by all opposition parties and some members of trudeau's own liberal party with the pragmatism or cowardice or a bit from column a and a bit from column be this abstention highlights the reason that governments are often pretty reticent about accusing anybody else of genocide. The convention on genocide does not merely oblige signatories to not commit genocide. It obliges them to act if someone else does. It's right there in article one. The contracting parties confirmed that genocide where the committed in time of peace or in time of war is a crime under international law which they undertake to prevent and to punish the trouble with invoking. The g word is that it implicitly summons an assumption of accompanying action which puts into context the motivations of the first country to accused china genocide against the week as the united states in the very lost hours of president. Donald trump's term so possibly laissez noble statement of principle and more the diplomatic equivalent of sewing prunes into the curtains vixen incoming tenant although intriguingly president joe biden's administration has thus far stood by the declaration. We're going to stop the chinese from their actions. We should be gone to the un immediately and so at sanctions against them in the united nations. For what they did. We have to be firm. We don't have to go to war but we have to make it clear. This is as far as you go. China the difficulty is that stopping the genocide very often necessitates confronting the people committing it and this can be risky expensive and difficult to sell to voters whose interest in the travails of people in place. They couldn't point to on globe cannot be taken for granted. This is the conundrum that to site. One inglorious example lead to the us administration of president bill clinton wintering squeamishly about act of genocide in rwanda in nineteen ninety-four had the us formally called the acts of genocide. Examining the media coverage of the Trump investigation

"Is the media midweek. Podcast i'm bob garfield and it was a tough monday morning for one guy. Been waiting on this decision since the middle of october and now the middle of february. We're finally getting this decision from the supreme court they are saying that the manhattan district attorney cy. Vance can in fact get to former president. Donald trump's tax returns. This is something that has been playing out in the courts for more than a year. Now that there is an oldie but a goodie the intriguing prospect of an allegedly rule breaking tax dodging constitution shredding president on riled prosecutors and fulton county georgia have launched a criminal investigation into former president. Trump's january phone call with the georgia secretary of state where he told secretary reference burger to quote fine. Vote lean. while new york's attorney general is investigating whether or not the trump organization misled investors by inflating assets. We should probably expect that. There will be charges filed against him that he will be indicted on. This case will probably go to trial. I think there's an excellent chance that he will be found guilty and if he is found guilty. There's an excellent chance he'll wind up in prison. Yeah not so fast. Late last year in the new york review writer lawyer and former federal prosecutor uncooked kadoorie reviewed the various arguments including his own ford. The prosecution of donald trump elsewhere he had characterized such as quote insane among his critics. One too many former prosecutors himself included represented in the commentariat to too few defense attorneys. Who know how to find holes in any complex case and three as he told brooke in december. No one is willing to say. We just can't know. I guess it's not a great way to get twitter. Followers or cable news hits but it just fundamentally true. There are lots of things we don't know and facts could change. And you know it's very rare that anyone saying that which brings us back to august. Virus vans says painter last year to door shebang as part of its investigation into president. Trump's business dealings time says. The bank complied with that subpoena. When that news broke a lot of people were strongly suggesting there might be a bank fraud case. What the manhattan. Da is looking at here is overstating the value of your assets to get loans understating the value of your assets when it comes tax time that kind of thing is straightforward textbook fraud. It's much easier for prosecutors to prove those kind of charges. Well just compare the two and then you know. He's in huge trouble. If they're not the same a bunch of people were. This is not just a bunch of people but a bunch of prominent former prosecutors with significant followings on twitter and cable news contributor gigs i was just really taken aback because i founded the fundamentally very misleading basically said. The speculation was insane. That you've done this at doj and it's simply not how fraud investigations are conducted. That is the word used in the wall street journal insane in particular about the suggestion that had been made by former acting solicitor. General under obama. And you'll cut. You'll i think it's totally possible for all of this to come out before the twenty twenty election in terms of new york's prosecutors getting this information on in acting on it and so that was really surprising to be coming from someone who is at least supposed to know better. According to convicted trump lawyer michael cohen trump inflated his assets when it was opportunities so deflated them when that was profitable. And if cohen is right. Doesn't that mean that a prosecutor could just compare one accounting book with another. Find the mismatch numbers. And you know it's over. No i mean. It's a very reasonable supposition. But when you're investing financial fraud case the fact that some documents some numbers may differ from one set to another is often. Just the start of a case you have to figure out why they differ doesn't matter why they differ who prepared them if their lawyers accountants and auditors involved. What did they have to say about. The relevant figures trump did not have a huge business. Right this is something. That i think david farrell hold at the post has been very good at illustrating for the public. Ns fairly small organization but that organization still had lawyers had an accountant. That is going to substantiate complicate any investigation if the lawyers overstepped and they can't prove that this was a conspiracy with which trump was involved. Then he's not liable that's correct. We don't even really know what trump's involvement was in the preparation of any of these figures that would be the crucial question. You'd want emails if they exist and of course he notoriously email. You'd want to know whether he had spoken to people and provided with them potentially with oral instructions now in the case of cohen. That is what he says right. That trump instructed people to falsify these figures but he's not a great witness is not a great witness at all. So you would want people to corroborate that you'd want much more than michael cohen. Well, well. President Trump continue to play a role in my party. I'm sure you will. He has by far the largest voice and a big impact in my party. US coronavirus death toll approaches a half million milestone

"I'm anthony davis the. Us stood on sunday. The brink of a once unthinkable tally. Five hundred thousand people lost to the corona virus a year into the pandemic the running total of lives lost was about four hundred ninety eight thousand roughly the population of kansas city missouri and just shy the size of atlanta the figure compiled by johns hopkins university surpasses the number of people who died in two thousand nine hundred nineteen of chronic lower respiratory diseases stroke outsiders flu and new monja combined. It's nothing like we've ever been through in the last one hundred and two years since the nineteen eighteen influenza pandemic the nation's top infectious disease expert. Antony found. She said the. Us virus death toll reached four hundred thousand on january nineteenth in the waning hours of president. Donald trump's office who's handling of the crisis was judged by public health experts to be a singular failure. The first known deaths from the virus in the us happened in early february. Twenty twenty both of them in santa clara county california. Meanwhile the ambitious claim of the incoming president a hundred million vaccination shots in one hundred days is close to being realized one month into his presidency. Biden addresses the Munich Security Conference, Rescinds Trump's Sanctions on Iran

"The biden administration wants to talk to iranian leaders about rejoining the twenty fifteen nuclear agreement. Let's recall here. Donald trump withdrew the us from that deal and restored sanctions on iran. That put the us at odds with us. Allies who remain part of the agreement along with other world powers today in his first speech to world leaders. President biden lays out his plan. Npr white house correspondent gordonia as is following this story. Good morning frank. Oh good morning. Well what do we expect to hear. President biden say about iran. Well senior officials told us yesterday that the united states is ready to accept an invitation from the european union to hold talks with iran about its nuclear program. Of course obviously the former president donald trump had quit the deal that was aimed at curbing. Iran's nuclear program biden said during the campaign that he was ready to take steps to rejoin the international pack but his team has repeatedly said that iran. I needed come. Back into compliance officials said yesterday that biden will not get into specifics about timetables but added that. He's keen to hear what iran has to say. And it's still really unclear if the run would even accept such an offer. They had demanded that sanctions be lifted. I but regardless. This is a big step toward diplomacy with iran which we have not seen in four years. I'm struck by the language that the us is ready to accept an invitation from the european union and it makes me wonder does biden have to convince us allies that we are prepared to work with them again. We will work with them again. I mean short. Yes i mean. We expect that biden today is really going to dig into his. America is back message. A senior official told us last night that the speech would be a quote confident. Clarion call for european allies to work together on global challenges. He'll talk about working together on the pandemic as well as other issues like arms control cyber hacking and climate change and to prove that commitment he plans to announce a four billion dollar contribution to kovacs. That's the international fund to help get covert vaccines to the poorest countries. The president will be making this speech to the munich. Security conference virtually. He won't be there in person. Of course who is going to be speaking to today you know. He is a very familiar face at this conference which is kind of who's who of people involved in national security around the world the leaders of germany france and the united kingdom will also be there. But you know as we've noted. There's a lot of uncertainty about the united states commitment to trans atlantic affairs. Here's actually charles corruption. Who was a senior adviser in the obama administration talking about that. The biggest change is that by will be speaking to europeans after a period in which electorates on both sides of the atlantic have looked into the abyss. And what that means is that americans and europeans remain in shock about the growth of global populism which has raised questions about the stability of liberal democracies as we

President Biden ready for talks on Iran nuclear deal.

"The biden administration said on thursday. It's ready to join talks with iran and world powers to discuss a return to the two thousand and fifteen nuclear deal in a shop repudiation of former president donald trump's maximum pressure campaign that sought to isolate the islamic republic. The administration also took two steps at the united nations aimed at restoring policy to how it was before. Trump withdrew from the deal in two thousand eighteen. The combined actions were immediately criticized by iran hawks and likely to draw concern for israel and gulf arab states in addition to signaling a willingness to talk with iran the administration also reversed trump's determination that all un sanctions against iran had been restored and it eased stringent restrictions on the domestic travel if iranian diplomats posted to the united nations. The state department announced the move following discussions between the secretary of state. Anthony blinken and he's british french and german counterparts and as biden prepares to participate albeit virtually in his first major international events with world leaders. The announcement came a day before biden to speak to leaders of the group of seven industrialized democracies and later. "Evening i wonder about what congresswoman. Deans said she was in the house chamber on january six but even she says she learned something in preparing for this trial. You think the american people have a takeaway as well. I think so. I think that most people were horrified by what happened on january six but the house managers put that into context. I pay a lot of attention to public affairs. But there are are a lot of things here that i remembered but never Connected with this. And i think most people are in the same position. Where were the managers. Most effective in pressing the case. I think there were most effective in showing the pattern of former president. Trump endorsing violence How close he had become too far right. Groups like the proud boys and the oath keepers three percenters and how much he had said over. The years endorsing violence His basic argument in trial was that you shouldn't take him seriously when he used words like fight that a lot of other people use bay showed that taken in the context of how often he had advocated violence and endorsed violence and approved violence after that happened That it was fair for his supporters to understand that their call was violence. The the former presidents attorneys countered by saying you never actually heard the former president. Use the words. I call you to violence or something that that would be technically or more most precisely and incitement. Where were they effective in. Where did the president's council fall short. I think they were effective in showing that the president has approved of storming the michigan state capitol earlier. It had praised the people who had done that violently. They had been fighting and he he did not say. I wish you'd been nonviolent. He said liberate michigan He had applauded His who had tried to run a biden harris campaign off the road in texas at complimented it Brought attention to it win. The president repreatedly praises violence. It's appropriate for his supporters to think that that's just what he wants them to do. And i think putting all those things together in one place no one of them was terribly persuasive. But in law it's possible to draw inferences from a pattern and i think the house managers presented a very compelling one house manager madeleine. Dean joins us now in fact a congresswoman. Good evening we appreciate it Any victory tonight in in getting seven republicans. Good evening and thank you. For having me i am. I believe what happened. Tonight was a victory for america that we documented for all time The dereliction of duty extraordinary high crimes and misdemeanors that the former president is guilty of so. It's a sad victory but that is the victory. We were struck here by something that you had said during your closing argument that you were in the house chamber on january six but in preparing for the case that that you had learned something in the scope of the horror. Do you think the american people learn something as well. I'm certain they did You know and the perspective is that. I was inside so i did not have access to television. I did not know what was going on. So i had no idea the numbers the volume the medieval kind of assault that took place But i believe and i'm confident that through our thorough presentation of the case as lead so well by representative and lead manager jamie raskin that america saw the gravity of this case the gravity of the wrong the gravity of the incitement by no less than the president of the united states on a co equal branch government at a time when we were beating enjoyed session with the vice president there So literally at the time for a couple of hours when we went to a say holding place. I didn't see a tv. So i thought maybe a dozen a couple dozen people had reached the capital and were wreaking havoc. We had no idea of the scope of this thing and sadly of the death and destruction of this thing it. It was Stunning eye opening. There was no conviction so there will be no consequence that the former president cannot run for office. Would you support censure. I don't understand center at all when you consider the gravity of the offenses that the president is guilty of And by the way fifty seven senators said so in a bipartisan fashion. The most bipartisan fashion. Ever and then immediately thereafter. I'm sure you noted this both Leader schumer and senator mcconnell spoke on the floor as to the president's grotesque dereliction of duty. So in my mind history will forever record that. This president is guilty of the highest of constitutional crimes. You remember this is. This is not a criminal port. Mrs about constitutional crimes. This is about a violation of his oath at dereliction of duty. And so i. I believe america and history and the world will forever record That he's guilty of these things mitch. Mcconnell said so himself and then allowed himself not to vote guilty based on a technicality which is strange because it was his very senate who said we have jurisdiction they had jurisdiction congresswoman. We're grateful for your time at the end of what must be a long day congresswoman madeleine dean of.

"These single articles of impeachment that he faced accusing him of incitement of an insurrection. We're joined from georgetown law. Professor david super we know the house managers fell ten. Republican vote short of a conviction. But where might they have made inroads. The outcome of this was largely preordained The they're very strong political reasons for not convicting and ultimately all impeachment. Trials are volved political judgments this. When did the earlier one for president trump did the one for president clinton did even the ones for andrew johnson did and the republican party at this point was not inclined To vote to convict Leading member of their party throughout the trial he decried what he termed the january exception to impeachment. He said the the former president could still be held to account even though he committed his his alleged crime when when he was on his way out of office. The house responded that the former presidents attorneys. I should say responded by saying he could still be brought up on criminal charges. Is that actually a realistic possibility. We don't know The president may well have pardoned himself before he left office. There's nothing that requires a pardon to be publicly disclosed. He may have pardoned himself and felt that not disclosing it would be helpful in getting republicans to vote to acquit him In this proceeding so I think it's far from clear whether there will be criminal charges. Stay criminal charges have been discussed in new york Georgia possibly other places and any pardon. He might have issued himself. Wouldn't apply there. It has anything along. Those lines is is very preliminary. It's very hard to guess whether those will go forward. I was going to ask if you could imagine. A biden justice department actually bringing in case. The president clearly has no appetite for this on the other hand. One of the things he said over and over again as a candidate is he wanted to de politicize the justice department and so it's very possible That he would not intervene His attorney general is someone who served for a long time as a judge is accustomed to making independent decisions Apart from politics so it's certainly possible that this decision would be made by career prosecutors based on the evidence that they amass and that both the president the attorney general would let them make the call. Let me pull recline our political director back into our conversation for a second rick. We heard the senate republican leader mitch. Mcconnell with a forceful rebuke of former president trump after the vote to acquit. Does that signal that mcconnell could be open to some kind of criminal prosecution here. It was almost an invitation. For the biden justice department to pursue that the flip side of that is that mcconnell had an opportunity to really change the equation when it comes to came to the impeachment vote. He decided early today to signal that he was going to be a vote to acquit. He may be that he realizes. This is just a political hot potato handed off to the the biden justice department. Because he doesn't want to handle it he realizes that a forty three of his own members decided to stand with the president including himself today. So it's easy to say. Let someone else deal with this. But i do think he was sending a very clear message. In the biden. Justice department does decide it wants to produce to pursue something you will now have the words of the senate. Republican leader is saying it. It's appropriate and that this is the recourse that is in place and the appropriate one to pursue. When it comes to an outgoing president there will also be the words rick of congresswoman. Jaime herrera butler. Who was going to be called as a witness in the in the house. Managers abandoned that call and instead had a statement from her entered into the record in which he recounts a conversation that she says she had with kevin mccarthy the house republican leader who spoke to president trump on january sixth and the way she describes it the president At first denied his supporters were responsible for the riot and was reluctant to actually do anything to call off his supporters. Should the witnesses have been pursued and get a fuller accounting of what had happened. Yeah this is just one of those things that is going to go undone as is in in in terms of this impeachment case as thorough as it was in as much of a record was built for historians. There's a missing series of pieces. There was more information to be gathered. Some of it could have been gathered if you can do congresswoman harare butler had been had been subpoenaed Some of it could be gleaned. If kevin mccarthy was brought in for testimony mark meadows mike pence alka the former vice president. All of those folks had pieces of the story to tell they may yet tell them but they didn't tell him as part of this impeachment proceedings. So this eleventh hour development with with the congresswoman expressing a willingness to have her testimony shared with the united states senate. It's just it's just going to be one of those one of those what forever because of course it. After a little flurry today it looked like senate was moving in the direction of having witnesses in fact there was a vote to allow them. But then backtrack and just a just a simple reading of her statement into the record. Abc's ben siegel in fact was in the in the chamber and at the capitol when all of this was going down for a while then it it really through the the events or the expected events of the day into disarray. That's right the best way to describe. This erin was that it was Looked like a diversion in the road for for where things are going today but it ended up being cold. Sack this really. Through proceedings into chaos for several hours it took democrats and republicans in the senate. By surprise. They did not know what the managers we're going to do And when the senate broke to sort of figure out how to move forward several senate democrats came up to the managers and said you know we shouldn't do this..

"Of all the terrible brutal things i saw and i heard on that day and since then that one hit me the hardest. Abc's elizabeth joins us from washington howard senators in the room reacting. At that point it was pretty emotional. I mean the. We have to remember that these senators were there when this attack happened. And as we heard from congressman asthma. This is very very close to them. This is this is real and after that thirteen minute video played that replayed the capital attack and juxtaposed the video of the rioters with former president. Trump's speech in his comments telling them to fight at the capitol essentially there was silence in the chamber. It was completely silent for about ten. Seconds before congressman. Raskin started speaking again so we know that part of effort here from the house. Impeachment managers is to have the senators relive the experience. And it's hard not to get emotional when you're listening to something like that movie. Pull recliner political director into the conversation. Rick take it from here. The the opening arguments will begin in earnest. Starting tomorrow does drastic and in the other house impeachment manager someone that emotion again. I have to think they will. I mean i. I was such a telling moment that the president trump's defense attorneys were caught unawares with the emotion that they brought to the testimony. Today this was just supposed to be about the narrow constitutional question but i think the video is compelling storytelling is compelling and i think for the next phase of this of this impeachment trial the idea of tying the events directly to president trump is the bar the impeachment managers wanna raise realistic about the prospects of this but they feel like it's an important statement for history for accountability. And i think just to mark where we are as a country to establish how what the president thought indeed did in real time was relevant into draw that direct through line from those statements to those actions and i think also focused on the president's actions and lack thereof on january six.

"Like over inciting this but if they weren't inciting this he passed up on several hours of opportunities To change the situation and might have saved some lives if there was a standout moment from the start of former president trump second impeachment. Trial may have been from lead house impeachment manager jamie raskin who gave an emotional account of being at the capital january. Sixth with his daughter and with his son-in-law abc news political analyst. Steve roberts is with us. He had just lost a son to suicide. Steve and he became emotional because he said his daughter told him. She didn't wanna come back to the capital. Well it was a very touching moment. Yes. it's true his middle child. Tommy committed suicide. He was a student at the harvard law. School which is where jamie raskin went and where he met his wife. Sarah bloom raskin. Who was under secretary of the treasury under obama and He has been gripped by the memory of his son and it's It moved him deeply of course but also Drove him to accept this responsibility even as he was grieving He's fifty eight years old. He represents the district in suburban maryland. Where i happen to live He's only in his third term but he he spent two decades as a constitutional law professor at american university law school. And that's why he was part it was. It was a combination of his depths of emotions. But also his He's a true constitutional scholar and that showed as well it's But he captured something profound today because he was very human and so often debates in washington or so abstract. And even this legal debate turn so personal so human For jamie raskin today and you're right and it was an indelible moment. Abc news political analyst. Steve roberts with us david super from georgetown law is is also with us. This was the the moment when raskin said Recounting what his daughter told him from january. Sixth data. I don't wanna come back to the capital of all the terrible brutal things that i saw and i heard on that day. He said that one hit me hardest. that is not a legal argument but will the former presidents attorneys have grapple with it at all. Oh i think they will I think that this is Insignificant part apolitical trial in the broadest sense of the term It is being tried in front of the american public. And it's the american public Becomes even angrier than they already are leave very difficult for senators to vote to acquit david super from georgetown law. "It doesn't sound like a lot. Aaron but a fifteen percent defection rate from trump among republicans is huge. That's millions and millions of votes so that's why republicans are upset. It's not just because of what's happening inside the senate. It's what happening in the in the politics outside around the country where they are connected to a figure who is damaged and and I is losing popularity and is facing this kind of case that has been very effectively made by democrats. Not legally but politically today erin and politically is is where this of course turns and reclined. That there were in bruce. Casters rather folksy tone. Still some some. Maybe veiled threats that that you know if republicans cross former president trump. They do so at their own peril. The threat is about what could happen. As a result of trial or a vote that would ultimately remove president trump from consideration Going forward he termed it. Mr castro termed disenfranchisement for tens of millions of voters who might choose to vote for president trump. and yes of the way that it was cast as the The most unifying things that could happen at this moment i do think was something of a veiled threat about what might happen if this happened for the first time in the history of this country and individual is barred specifically from from seeking the presidency. Again it was cast. I think you know rather rather over-simplifying the case to say the democrats just fear. Donald trump coming back and being them. I think actually the politically easier thing would be for them to drop this and move onto the biden agenda and onto twenty twenty four. But i don't how you read that as anything other than a threat say look at these divisions in the country. You're going to make them worse. And by the way. Remember what happened last time that that a whole lot of trump voters felt like. Oh they weren't getting treated fairly. Meanwhile the white house stressed today. That president biden is not focused on all of this. Let's bring back karen travers. Our white house correspondent instead the white house said he was focused on addressing the needs of the american people. Yeah the focus is on the economy. Today for president biden. He met with ceos in the oval office today to talk about ways to jump start the economy and his messages. People are hurting. There are a lot of people who need help right now. And that's the job that he has to do and that he's not going to weigh in on what's happening on capitol hill. He was pretty emphatic on this. He said that's all i'm going to have to say about impeachment. Which is they got a job to do. And they're gonna do it now. Aaron the white house said you know yes. Impeachment is a big story. they're not trying to downplay. This and those are not trying to counter program in any way. They're not trying to take attention away. They understand that. This is important for there to be accountability for the democrats to make this case against the former president. But they're also proceeding with their agenda as planned for this week as if impeachment was never going to happen. And we're going to see the president tomorrow. Go to the pentagon will see him at the national institutes of health on thursday and You know we're going to keep asking them questions about this. But they made it very clear today that they are not going to weigh in on every twist and turn of the impeachment trial because they really believe. It's not going to help advance their agenda. They would like this wrapped up quickly. So the senate can get back to work on the agenda including the one point nine trillion dollar. Kobe relief bill. But i think the big message is the president. Senior officials. say senators decide the process. And they're going to decide the former presidents fate. Abc news white. House correspondent karen travers. "You Mr President. Before the President Senator from Utah Anki Mr President. The constitution is at the foundation of our republic success and we each strive not to lose sight of our promise to defend it. The constitution established the vehicle of impeachment. That has occupied. Both houses are Congress. These many days we have labored to faithfully execute our responsibilities to it. We have arrived at different judgments but I hope we respect respect each other's good faith. The allegations made in the articles of impeachment are very serious as a senator juror. I swore an oath before God exercise impartial justice. I am profoundly religious. My faith is at the heart of who I am I take an oath before God as enormously consequential I knew from the outset that being tasked with judging the president the leader of my own party would be the most difficult decision I have ever faced. I was not wrong in the house. Managers presented evidence supporting their case in the White House. Counsel disputed that case in addition. The president's team presented three defenses his first that there could be no impeachment without a statutory crime second. The Biden's can conduct justified the president's actions and third that the judgment of the president's action should be left to the voters. Let me first address. Those three defenses the historic meaning of the words high crimes and misdemeanors the writings of the founders. And my own reason judgment convinced that a president can indeed commit acts against the public trust that are so egregious ages that while they are not statutory crimes they would demand removal from office to maintain that the lack of a codified and comprehensive list of all the outrageous accident. The president might conceivably commit renders congress powerless to remove such. A president defies reason the President's council. Also I'm not vice. President Biden appeared to have a conflict of interest when he undertook an effort to remove the Ukrainian prosecutor general. If he knew of the exorbitant exorbitant compensation. His son was receiving from a company. Actually under investigation vice president should have recused himself while ignoring a conflict of interest. Twist is not a crime it is surely very wrong with regards to Hunter Biden. Taking excessive advantage of his father's name is unsavory but also not a crime given that a neither the case of the father nor the son was any evidence presented by the President's Council that a crime I'm had been committed. The president's insistence that they'd be investigated by the Ukrainians is hard to explain other than as a political pursuit. There's no question in my mind that we're their names not biden. The president would never have done what he did. The the defense argues that the Senate should leave the impeachment decision to the voters while that logic is appealing to our democratic instincts. It is inconsistent with the Constitution's requirement. That the Senate not the voters try the President Hamilton explained that the founders. There's decision to invest senators with this obligation rather than leave it to the voters was intended to minimize to the extent possible. The partisan sentiments of the public at large urge so the verdict is hours to render under our constitution. The people will judge us for how well and faithfully fulfill. Well our duty the grave question. The Constitution Task Senators to answer is whether the President committed an act. So extreme and egregious use that it rises to the level of a high crime and misdemeanor. Yes he did. The president asked a foreign government to investigate his political rival. The president withheld vital. Military Funds from that government depressant to do so the president delayed funds for an American ally at war with Russian invaders. The president's purpose was personal and political accordingly. The president is guilty of an appalling abuse. A public trust. What he did was not perfect? No no it was a flagrant assault under electoral rights. Our national security and our fundamental values corrupting during an election to keep oneself in office is perhaps the most abusive and destructive violation of one's oath of office that I I can imagine in the last several weeks I have received numerous calls and texts many demanded in their words that I stand with with the team. I can assure you that that thought has been very much in my mind. You see I support a great deal of what the President has done. I voted with an eighty percent of the time but my promise before God to apply impartial justice required that I put my personal personal feelings and political bias. Aside were I to ignore the evidence that has been presented and disregard. What would I believe my oath and the constitution demand me for the sake of partisan end it would I fear expose my character to histories rebuke and the center of my own conscience? I'm aware that there are people in my party. And in my state who will strengthen strenuously disapprove of my my decision and in some quarters. I will be vehemently denounced. I'm sure to hear abuse from the president and his supporters. Does anyone seriously christly believe that I would consent to these consequences. Other than from an inescapable conviction that my oath before God God demanded of me I saw it to hear sought to hear testimony from John Bolton not only because I believed he could add context of the charges but also because I hoped that what he might say could raise reasonable doubt and thus removed from me awful obligation Asian to vote for impeachment like each member of this deliberative body. I love our country. I believe that our Constitution itution was inspired by Providence. I'm convinced that freedom itself as depended on the strength and vitality of our national character as it is with each senator. My vote is an active conviction. We've come to different conclusions fellow senators but I trust we have all followed the dictates of your conscience acknowledged that my verdict will not remove the president from office. The results of this Senate court will in fact be appealed to a higher your court the judgment of the American people voters will make the final decision. Just as the president's lawyers have implored my vote will likely be be in the minority in the Senate but irrespective of these things with my vote. I will tell my children and their children that I did my duty to the best of my ability. Believing that my country expected of me I will only be one name among many no more. No less to future generations rations of Americans who look at the record of this trial. They will note merely that I was among the senators who determined that what the president did was wrong grievously wrong and we are all footnotes at best in the annals of history but in the most powerful nation Earth The nation conceived even liberty and justice. That distinction is enough for any citizen. Thank you Mr President. I yield the floor floor here..

"Enough. When it comes to president trump this sham process is the low point in the Senate for me? If you think you've done the country a good service by legitimizing this impeachment process which you have done is unleash. The PARTISAN FORCES OF HAIL MR president. This has been a divisive time for our country. But I think it has nonetheless on the last minute important constitutional process for us to follow as this chapter of history draws to a close one thing is clear to me as I've said before our country deserves better than this. They deserve better from the president. They deserve better from the Congress. We must find a way to come together to set aside partisan in differences and to focus on what we have in common as Americans. Well so much is going on in our favor. These days we still face great challenges both domestically and internationally but it remains my firm belief that united we can conquer them and remain the greatest hope for for the people around the world. I will be voting to defend this president's actions. I'll be voting against undoing and the vote taken by the American people some three and a half years ago. I'll be voting for the principle of freedom for for the very principles that our constitution was designed to protect. I urge all of my colleagues to reject these deeply factually and legally flawed articles of impeachment to vote not guilty. Thank.

Your turney in a tweet had said that there were two times in which you gave the message of a quid pro quo to Ukrainian officials. What were those two times? I I think they would probably will be more than two times but There was so the I quit. Co Pro game is when we met with President Pro Shaneco That was president for former president per SHANECO. Because what was your message to poor Shaneco. Persian was that if he would Make the announcement that he would do he would get Trump would either invite them to the White House or a statement for him but basically we start supporting him for president. That was the first quid. Pro Quo. Portion can come to the White House or get a meeting with trump if he announces an investigation. Or what was the next one and you have to understand because this was a transition time he was Alinsky just one he was president elect And he the most the number one thing and their agenda was not even the transition. It was to get inauguration because it was a big thing he was the show the American American backing of the new the new of because he had no strength with Giuliani cancels his visit Because there's a lot of bad publicity about in the United States. He cancelled his visit. You go have the a meeting with a high level official in Dolinsky Circle. And what's the message you deliver Basically told them very strict and very starring that Several things things a that He needed to make those Alinsky and the into immediately make announcement literally that night to or tomorrow that within the next twenty four hours that they're oh opening up an investigation on Biden at that point was there any mention of withholding aid. Yeah it was Well if they didn't make the announcement basically there would be the relationship not just was no specific military. There was no eight that was GONNA be assisted. There was gonNA be no inauguration. Pence wouldn't be at the inauguration and they would be no visit to the White House there would be basically they will have no communication so how you told the top official in designing ski inner circle that that if they did not announce an investigation of the Biden's immediately and get rid of some folks around Lansky who they believed were opposed to president trump. That there wouldn't be any aid and vice. President Pence would not even come to the inauguration. And what happened. What did they say I called Rudy? You told them that. I don't think it's GonNa there's going to be an announcement and he said okay. They'll see they'll see see and what happened. The next day I got called and said that they got a call from them basically so they found out that pence is not going to be there they guy got cancelled he said that there was a scheduling problem or something the day after you deliver that message throw quote very another thirty was a Monday the thirteenth And then After that like I think on the the sixteenth or two fifty remember the exact dates They had because they were flipping out what to do. They want to be embarrassed. They didn't know if anybody always gonNA show You know but they knew pencils. Incoming trump wasn't coming. How did you have the authority to say the vice president? United States will not attend the inauguration inauguration. If you don't do what I say I mean. That's what I was told to though. Who told you to do that? Giuliani this letter. That that you gave due to the House the first line which is a letter from Rudy. Giuliani to president-elect landscape says I am private counsel to President Donald J trump just to be precise I represent him as a citizen not as president of the United States. This is quite common under American law duties and privileges of a president and private citizen or not the same so he he is making a very clear point that he's not representing the interests of the United States Writ Large American national security he's representing the interest of Donald J trump. That was always the point that was that was always made clear. He always made it clear that he doesn't represent wherever we went. He said I don't represent the government. I represent the president of the United States. So anything rudy. Giuliani wanted the government of Ukraine. To do that. That wasn't official. US policy that was a personal benefit to the president. United States. Well you know when when I was doing it I thought it was all in the same but obviously not what was I could see with the situation the way it is I mean it was strictly for him but again I thought he was the leader. He's the chief he's the president and it was all about twenty twenty to make sure he had Four years and I didn't but that's how. Oh you personally viewed it. This is about twenty twenty to help him get the next four years though is the way everybody viewed it. I mean there was that was the most important thing is for. Oh him to stay on for another four years and keep the fight going. I mean there's no other reason for doing it. Did the president care about corruption in Ukraine. You'd have to ask him. But as far as I know are are the only thing we care about. The we were we were the team was toge- Alinsky or Shaneco or somebody to make the press release announcement into the Biden investigation in terms of who knew about what you were doing. In Ukraine device president pence no of course because his office said he was unaware of you know that he had met with his Alinsky after. Not Going to the inauguration but he wasn't delivering a message of a quid pro quo look again like I said. I'm not here to debate. I'm here to get the truth out. I got my records. I'd and how do you know that the vice president would have known what Giuliani was up to you because we would speak every day. I knew everything that was going on. I mean after Rudy would speak with the president or who who come from the White House. I was the first person he briefed. I mean we had a relationship. We were that close. I mean I mean we were together for morning tonight. I mean he took me I mean interview he would do. I would be sitting over there while he was doing the interviews. I mean Giuliani knew everything. You were doing everything you think. You're saying vice president pence new. Well no if my vice president the everything we're doing out I'm sure he knew he was. Of course he knew everybody knew everybody that was close to trump. No the that this was a thorn in the side. And this was a serious situation Bolton Bolton Albany Mulvaney Bolton Alton agreed with it I think good there's certain people that agreed with then agree with the. He called it a drug deal. According to the hill I think Bolton is a very important witness because because I think between me and Bolton we could fit in all the dots I think because I was on the ground there and he was over here. I mean you'd be willing to testify. I would be very willing to testify a few moments ago. You heard president trump. Say that he didn't know Parnis Vice. President Pence says the same telling reporters code. I don't know the guy pens. Also said it was quote completely false that he was aware that dirtying up. Joe Biden was the goal of the pressure on Ukraine. We reached out for comment from Rudy Giuliani and got no response. However he did say this about about his former associate lab porn is associated? Press quoting. Now I feel sorry for him. I thought he was an honorable man. I was wrong next in part two of our conversation why life life partners believes that senators are afraid to call a witness also had the legal implications harnesses allegations as well as the GAO's striking conclusion that the White House broke the law that at a more when we continue on this history making day.
