"Pumpkin season two peppermint time. Dairy queen is bringing back its favorite peppermint hot cocoa blizzard. Have you guys tried one of these at all? No, but it sounds amazing. I was getting my next question to me. I just don't really mix the pepper. I'm not a mint ice cream mixed kind of purse. I don't like candy cane at all. Like I don't get them as a flavor in a drink. I'm not as big of a fan. Yeah, you just don't like sucking on a candy cane. No, do you? Yeah, it was better flavors. Like so you like the fruit ones that like the no. Just no candy canes and general shape. Okay. All right, well, the special holiday blizzard will be available for the month of December so you can check that out. Stephen Colbert sat down with former President Barack Obama and they gonna get that kind of talked about a few things and how he missed him during the Trump presidency, his new book, and he asked him about his biggest mistake while in office. Colbert asked. How does Dolly Parton not have a presidential medal of freedom and Obama responded with this is a mistake. I'm shocked, Obama replied..
Biden names diverse economic team with four women in top roles to help build recovery
"Group that features four women in top roles, including former Federal Reserve Board chair Janet Yellen as his choice for Treasury secretary. Reporter Jim Tankersley of The New York Times has been following these developments closely. He covers economics for the paper, and he's also the author of the recent book, The Riches of this Land. Jim Tankersley. Thanks so much for being with us again. What do these choices as a group tell you about Joe Biden's priorities What he may do once he takes office. Well, thanks so much for having me Judy. This is a group that is really focused on workers and on labor and maybe one of the most of union friendly groups of top economic advisers. We've seen in the White House in a long time and in particular for policy right out of the gate. It's a group that's going to be very committed on the idea of trying to get the economy up and running as fast as it can as quickly as possible in order to boost worker wages. And it's gonna be not at all shy about pushing additional deficit spending by the federal government in order to get there. And specifically with regard to covert relief, Covad economic relief. Can you tell anything from looking at this group? But what what might happen? Yeah, They've been very clear a number of them from Janet Yellen, the Neera tanden on down on these pics about the sorts of things that need to be done to help. People and businesses and state local governments survived. This pandemic on DAT includes more direct aid tol division ALS. It includes more help for small businesses and in particular age of states and local governments who have big budget holes, But also things like passing pandemic paid leave, You know a program to give family and paid leave. The workers who are on the front lines of code in particular, and I think that you will see all of those policies pushed early on by the biting teeth. So let's talk specifics. Janet Yellin at Treasury, the first woman to hold that job as we were saying, what do we know? Based on her record? What to expect from her. Janet Yellen is a labor economist by training on someone who really pushed the Federal Reserve when she was the chairman of the reserve to keep interest rates low for a long time in order to stoke growth, and I think we'll see more of that out of her hear more of a focus on inequality and unworkable is and you know another thing that she's focused on a lot in the last couple of years is on Tearing down the barriers of discrimination in the economy to help women in particular succeed, and I think you'll see her focus on that as well. It's it's been a big deal for her in the economics profession, but it's something that she is talked a lot about having enormous consequences for the broader economy. And then Cecilia Rouse, who President elect Biden Has said he wants to head his council of Economic Advisers. Not as well, a known name as the others. But so what should we know about her? She'll if she's confirmed, should be the first black economist ahead the Council of Economic Advisers she was on the council under President Barack Obama. She's also a labor economist, ah, real expert in a variety of things having to do with labor and education, and just like Jenna Galan has, as focused a lot of academic work on the effects of discrimination. S O. There are some common themes here with the team. And then there is Tol, the Office of Management and Budget. Neera Tanden, who has been around she's someone who I think is familiar. Too many who watch what's going on in Washington. What do what do we look for? From her? Near attended, runs the center for American Progress, which is a liberal think tank, and she has been on adviser to Hillary Clinton. She's been around Washington for a long time. She is someone who has really pushed on a variety of sort of liberal policy agenda items that is more of a political player than the other two. But I think with Neera Tanden, you will see Ah, focus in the Ownby. If she's confirmed on things like climate change healthcare on you on sort of Not shying away again from running budget deficits. Tosto growth, which is you know a real, I think departure from what many progressives thought they might be getting if I hadn't had appointed someone who was more of a moderate deficit, longer term deficit Hawk Democrat to that position. And Jim. What about with regard to Senate confirmation? These three positions we've been talking about all require Senate confirmation. What is expected for each one of them for yelling for rouse and for Tanda. Well, I think Janet Yellen appears likely to be confirmed. Based on the comments that we've seen in the last 24 hours from Republican senators. She's someone who has been confirmed by the Senate before. So is this is the arrest who I think is like that he converted also in less Republicans find some things in her academic work that they really object to Neera Tanden again as a more political player and someone who's Twitter feed has really offended. A lot of Republican senators may face more opposition and that was signaled by Republican senators in the last day that they don't like that she has taken after Republicans in public comments and so that that maybe get hard for them to confirm her. A lot will depend on whether Democrats control the senator Republicans do after the runoff elections that Georgia in January. And one other thing, Jim. I mean, people look to see the differences between this team and the Trump economic team. Pretty significant difference. Sure, there's just a big difference in how they approach the economy. The Trump team came in with a real focus on how do they sperm or business investment of the economy? How can they do more by taking away regulations by cutting taxes to make businesses happier and get them to spend more money on investments of this team is much more focused on workers. How do they support workers? How do they change regulations or even bolster them? To make it easier for people to work and to make that work pay off with higher wages, so it's just completely different angle at looking at the economy and very different policies that will result Him. Tankersley with the New York Times

Michael Flynn: Trump pardons ex-national security adviser
"Former. Us national security adviser. Michael flynn who was convicted during the justice department inquiry into alleged russian interference in the two thousand sixteen election has been pardoned by president. Donald trump trump called his own action. A great honor whilst house speaker. Nancy pelosi called it an act of grave corruption and abrazen brazen abuse of power. Well which is it. And what kind of precedent does it set. Let's get the opinion of scott lucas professor of us. Politics at the university of birmingham scott. Good morning to you. Good morning do remind us of flynn's short-lived term. I think it was just three weeks in the white house. Well while it was only three weeks in the white house there was an import run up to the while he was on the trump campaign in two thousand sixteen. Because michael. Flynn lied to the fbi on two occasions and pleaded implied pleaded guilty to lying to the fbi about a number of conversations. He had with the russian ambassador. Sergei kislyak and december two thousand sixteen. Why were those conversations important because they were about an incoming trump administration lifting sanctions on russia. That had just been imposed by president. Barack obama over moscow's interference in the two thousand sixteen election and interference which of course favoured donald trump. So the was that that michael flynn on behalf of the trump campaign or trump transition was trading immediate political favors in exchange for russia's help The initially the trump administration tried to keep planning office in january february two thousand and seventeen but he had to be sacrificed trump's trying to create a firewall to prevent further investigation. That investigation didn't stop of course accommodated in the miller report which found that there was cooperation between the trump folks and the russians but the right wing insisted and kept pressing trump. You must pardon. Michael flynn he became like this icon for the misinformation that this was all a deep state plot to overthrow the president and we do at some point. That trump would probably pardon fled. It just so happens to come. Easy as trump is trying to cling onto the white house after losing the election in november. We'll see what kind of precedent does this set. I mean do you think that we'll see trump do similar in this. Lame duck period. Oh yeah i think there will be more. And i think that's for a couple of reasons but first let me remind you. That is not just that michael. Flynn actually lied to the fbi about the russia case. It's also that michael flood may have faced prosecution over being an unregistered agent for a foreign power. Taking hundreds of thousands of dollars shrunk turkey and russia for his work while he was on the trump campaign to the extent of making on voice of the turkish government. About extraditing a cleric who is considered an opponent of president aired on And that michael. Flynn was making more money of trying to get nuclear power plants for saudi arabia while he was on the trump campaign and the trump administration In other words trump is willing to give flint a pass for that for two reasons. One he wants to bury the trump russia a fair and trump still faces possible charges over obstruction of justice over trump russia. And secondly michael. Flynn could testify against donald trump in a number of proceedings that are ongoing at state and federal level. Trump wants to cut off that possibility. But you know what michael not. The only person who could testify against donald trump avoid that possibility and of course after trump's term ends in january. He is as you say likely to face. Many legal challenges is there any way he can preemptively. Pardon himself no. We don't think so. I mean no president has tried to pardon himself so we're on noodle legal ground but mostly glands say no that power can't be used to get yourself off the hook what donald trump could do however days before january twentieth. Joe biden takes office resign. Let mike pence become president mike pence pardons donald trump. That is an extraordinary scenario to to think of if it didn't happen in the interest of a united america do you think joe biden might pardon trump if he is convicted. I don't think biden will pardon trump because the scale of the abuse of power by trump as well as the possible crimes is is great probably greater than that of richard nixon in the nineteen seventies. But i what. I do think joe biden will do as is that he will not possibly. He will not push the justice department To do federal investigations in other words. Trump is in sort of a limbo but of lambeau at the federal level. However what joe biden can't do is issue commands to the new york state prosecutors who were compiling a series of cases against what would then be the former president and i mean. Do you seriously think that we could be looking at a feature where donald trump is behind bars. Look georgina there are many things that have happened. We could not visit for years. So i i wouldn't rule anything out at this point. I think donald trump's gonna go kicking and screaming and he as we've seen with his dispute of the election results. His attorneys will drive this out as long as possible. So trump might avoid prison but to avoid prosecution. Now i think even the donald can't get away with that scott lakers. Thanks very much

Otherwise i'll see you in four years. Meaning he's gonna run again pretty much have Put that out there. We were talking yesterday with john decker. Who covers the white house in washington and he told us he gave us a a bold prediction now. He thought he would run. I i as a matter of fact. I kept it. 'cause john suggested that we keep that on file and then we could play. It is it. John suggested that Because you asked if he thought that the president trump was going to skip the inauguration day festivities the traditional events. He says yeah. I don't think you'll be anywhere near washington. He may be enough. Say florida where he won the state twice and where he lives holding a rally and kicking off a campaign to get back to the white house. Four years from now on an inauguration. Day yeah i believe that could happen. Certainly sounds trump. Like doesn't it really does so. I guess i guess it's you know it's interesting. Trump campaign adviser told cnn there have been discussions about a potential event. On trump's future plans that have. It could be scheduled around inauguration day. The adviser perhaps on inauguration day yeah progressive lawmakers taking a social media to criticize former president barack obama for saying that snappy slogans such as defunding the police turn people off. I was not a big fan of president obama. But i'll tell you something. Sometimes i agree with something he says and i could not agree with this more and i'm frustrated for him because people don't get it. Listen to what the man said. He didn't say it was a bad policy. He didn't pass any judgement on the idea of defunding. The police said the slogan. He was talking about the way. Democrats grab onto these bumper sticker like You know phrases. Yeah he said if you if you stick to phrases like this. It makes it a lot less likely that you're actually going to get changes that you want done. Right is the key to deciding you really. Do you actually want to get something done or do you want to feel good. Among the people you already agree with and what's happened in the cities that have defended gracing crime. There was a there was a College in oregon Last week that made a move to disarm the campus police. They were going to give him tasers and take away their guns They had they had to change that plan because the campus cops quit. I don't blame him. i don't either. Their lives at stake out there. President trump's niece. mary is back riding again. She said to release his second book that she says we'll examine america's national trauma and her uncle's corrupt and immoral policy. Mary mary national trauma. Mary trump clinical psychologist will release the reckoning on july twentieth. I don't think i'd be going to her for treatment. And it has nothing to do with their poll. Politics hits her idea that i think just trying to cash in. Oh absolutely she's she. Did she got a lot of coverage on her first book and somebody said why. Don't you do another one. Gal right how can you right to hold books putting down one human being. Can you do that. She also followed up book with the release of audio recordings. Which has the president older sister who's a retired federal judge saying that president trump quote has no principles and others and this is just a that'd be fa- messy family thing. I could not have less interest in. I don't know why people have to air their dirty laundry in public. Exactly coming up on k. L. i. f. you working from home. Yeah yes go ahead. You may have a lot more aches and pains. We leave some president. We need some positive news in this study was done by preparation h. Which cracked me up..

"Yeah, It's just so typical. You see the cover of Barack Obama and in style magazine. He's got his 15 biography out 15 autobiography, and he's doing this book tour and there's a photo of him on in Style magazine, and I'll do my best for radio. He's leaning back in this photo on what looks like a couch. He's He's got a form fitting jacket on as he leans back. He's got the most sort of arrogant, smug look on his face. His eyes were kind of squinted. He's got a smirk on his face, and he's looking at you like Miss me. Do you miss me? I'm the greatest army. It's the most narcissistic pose. I think I've I've seen any president ever do. And I don't think I'm overstating that. And I don't think you're doing a justice at all. No offense to you at all. You cannot did. You explained it to me. And then some. And then I saw the picture and the description is not at all what I had in my head because you cannot in your brain fathom what this picture looks like. It. Can't every word that I think to come of mind to say that would describe it perfectly. I don't think I can say on the air So you're gonna have to just see it for yourself. Quit posted on our on our W m A L page? Yes, yes. Put on our W E mail page. You could see it. Yeah, So this is the way PJ media describes it. Obama is by no means a humble person. But for some reason, the photographer Shaniqua Jarvis chose to accentuate the narcissism having Obama lean back in a chair. Legs crossed and an awkward popped collar, all with a pompous smirk on his face like he's some millennial YouTube star, or he's just passed gas. No. You know what I have to say. And I'm sorry. I don't mean I don't mean this to be rude, and I don't mean this to be mean. But Michelle Obama is the one that I just she constantly is caught with this. Look on her face that, you know, it's kind of like the caption. The thought bubble above her head is who farted, you know, like it's got like she just felt something really bad. Look, right, Well, now we know the answer. It was, Barack. Um Is there any way and then? Meanwhile, right there on the on the cover of the headline on the cover of the magazine says that's what I do. Former President Barack Obama. What did Joe Biden elected? Is that what he did? What does he do pose for a magazine photos and look at some of the most. The look on his face was like you know what you gonna do about it Like it was one of those type of looks, But he can't pull that. What are you going to do about it? Look off Tony Soprano. That type of guy can pull that look off. Even Cuomo could probably pull that look off. Barack Obama cannot pull that look off. He's not that hyper masculine guy. He's just not and so when he tries to affect that look It comes off as awkward and weird and off, putting and Okay. Kind of five. Suppose as opposed. Yeah, no, it Z amusing to me. And by the way, you know that this photo is going to be used like six million times as a MIM. But oh, yes. Yeah, This is this is named territory anyway, begging for it. Barack Obama still on his book tour, which means we will bring you all the most hilarious moments. It's 5 50 on W well, and here's our Rush, bro. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report that last month alone, there were 235 cases of salmonella linked to families who raised chickens.

"But i still need a congress. I still need to make sure that we have a majority in the house of representatives. Because if i don't i can't get any a single law passed if i want to change something. On criminal justice reform it turns out that the federal government is actually in charge of most criminal law. Most criminal laws made at the state level and determined by state prosecutors. Most police departments the federal government has nothing to do with. That's determined by the mayor in that city whether they're prosecuted when they do something wrong. That's up to the state's attorney or district attorney in that area so when we think about politics. It is a mistake for us to say okay. Once i'm i've voted for president i'm done and i hope people don't repeat that mistake with biden and kamala harris right now. We've got two seats in georgia coming up if the republicans win those two seats than joe biden combine will not be able to get any law passed that mitch mcconnell and the republicans aren't willing to go along with you gotta do a better job of letting people know. Hey i wanted to do a lot more. People who couldn't could mitch. Mcconnell was blocking me every chance he got well. That's why i wrote the book. That's why everybody that's all. I'm saying about the interviews. I hear some people. Listen to you about georgia. Where not i see. They're giving him issues about his alliance with jeremiah. Wright tell him he should step back and denounce him at this point. Though first of all it is a losing game at this stage to just go chasing crazy commentary Y- there's some things you have to answer aggressively but you can't obsess over. It is doing a great job. I if i'm him. I'm going to be emphasizing. What am i. Positively gonna do on behalf of the people of georgia at As opposed to just try to play defense against a bunch of crazy stuff. That's coming out there but but listen. It's hard winning georgia dislike. It's hard winning. Iowa is like it's hard when in a lot of the country and one thing. I think that. I hope the book also reminds us of those of us who live in. Dc or new york or la. Sometimes we do not have a a good enough sense of how big this country is and how a lot of folks do not accept at all things that we who are. Living in urban metropolitan areas just take for granted off south carolina. I know yeah. I made us. You know you go there big chunks of the country even in our own communities right. I mean so so. I deeply believe that people should be treated equally under the law regardless of sexual orientation. I was shocked. You talked about in the book but we all you know. I mean i think the big chunks of our community where that's still controversial. People were surprised about A lot of hispanic folks who voted for trump. But there's a lot of evangelical hispanics who you know the fact that trump says racist things about mexicans or puts Detainees Undocumented workers in cages. They think that's less important than the fact that he Supports their views on gay marriage or abortion right. It's hard to believe when you say this but then you look at the way government is ran right you you talk about instance you look at these big businesses and and you look at their taxes and they don't pay taxes at all and then you look at somebody who is just getting by paying as much tax as possible and you look at for instance the pandemic taskforce that you created in man. You see trump coming off shuts down and you think to yourself dam if that task force was still around with so many people have been dead being killed. When we'll be able to save lives we would have saved some lives. Here's one simple statistic canada right right next door. Their death rate is forty percent of what ours per capita i. Don't you know. So for every hundred americans that have died. Only forty canadians have that. And that's just a matter of their government making better decisions so the the question though is is that you still had seventy billion people voting for a government that I would say objectively has failed miserably in handling just basic looking after the american people and keeping him say why is that well. Part of it is because It turns out. Politics is not just about policy. It's not just about numbers is about the stories that are that are being told and that story that they're hearing from fox news and rush limbaugh and in some cases inside their churches is that how democrats don't believe in christmas and you know Only care about minorities and black folks and are trying to take your stuff and trying to take your guns away and right. There's a whole story. That's being told to them and people end up feeling as if you know what we are under attack. The what's always interesting to me is the degree to which we've created you've seen created in republican politics this sense that white males victims. I bet they're the ones who were like under attack which obviously doesn't jibe with both history and data and economics but that's a sincere belief you know that's been internalized. That's a story being told and how you unwind that is going to be not something that is done right away. It's gonna take some time some rumors in this book. How different because you know. When i hear that i'm like amateur catering to white raises all the time. I wonder how different would the dim strategy be. If we lived in a one man one vote society with no electoral college. Or i think that would help. But take a simple example like the senate so wyoming which has about half a million people has the same number of senators as california with thirty three million people right so what that means is that the us senate is hugely skewed towards some of these lower population.

It'll be ten years that we've been doing the breakfast club correct for ten years for this whole week we could things given. We've never ever been here live vacation one time. All somebody were always outta town. It's just the week of thanksgiving. We're always off well so on e. With his white man's holiday we decided to come in for one day in one day only for very very very very very special occasion. Very special reason right. There's a book out called promised to and promised land rights written by a guy. You may know. wasn't they kind of popular. I guess who is he was named the forty. Five president of the united states of america is listening. Barack hussein. obama. Never heard of barack hussein obama who that and I guess you could say we were summoned. We don't have all of that Fancy ass technology. That oprah has the where she can be in our house and win make it look like her and moroccan. Say room. now we don't have those so we had to get cova tested in Fly down to dc. Make sure we were properly. Socially distanced to sit and kick it with president. Barack obama not only that they took all social security numbers. Wrangler protocol you know. Made sure that actually also need that. Don't you need that to get the covid test. Do you know information all that. All that information was on full full secret. Service protocol run it. Make sure we were good morning. I've been vetted before. Actually i i'm ever got vetted i didn't path at all we all but you didn't pass that one. Yeah but you know since then. My life has changed so president. Barack obama will be joining us next hour. We go with the president Doesn't it yeah. That's the only reason we -cation Didn't even know he would come in. I was like wait. We have a show tomorrow. Yeah i mean. I think it's only it's only right president. We sat and chopped it up with him for almost all right. So we're also we usually You know play snippets of the interview on hair and then put the whole thing up on youtube. It's morning we're playing the whole in every play in the whole in seven o'clock yeah so We'll we'll get into all that It's only reason the only reason we have anything else. You got to feel free okay. We got front page news next. Well let's talk about who. Joe biden has selected for his cabinet and let's also talk about corona virus. This vaccine is supposed to becoming in a couple of weeks and we'll give you some updates on the side effects all right. We'll get into all that when we come back a lot this the breakfast club on morning. Everybody is tj nv angela. Shall i mean the guy. We oughta breakfast hatton next hour. Yes barack obama president. Barack obama will be joining us right. And we're playing the interview in full so no songs in between no commercial breaks no commercial breaks down in between no four fifteen fifteen fifteen. No forty-five minutes straight forty five hundred forty finesse. I dunno i just ask them right. There blake no commercials. We won't be going straight. It was only a couple of people can do that. There was like Barack hove beyond say. Michelle obama and only four people. I can get on here without planning. We can debate it also. Let's get some front page news. I don't even know who's playing football tomorrow. I don't even know. I'm i've been chilling at home. Come on man cowboys redskins. Who cares about those exactly so wasted time. They should be social distancing from the nfl. All right what else. We guy but joe biden is building out his cabinet. Since we're talking presidents that's our president elect and there's fifteen executive and so far of course comma harassment was vice president secretary of state is anthony. Blinken secretary of homeland security is alejandro. And that's a big win because he actually is the first latino and he's also the first immigrants serve in that position so that's gonna be a a big deal right now because you know we've had a lot of issues with immigration in this country and dhaka and all of that so this could be something and he says that he would have never seen himself in that position so he's hoping to help people who are fleeing from persecution and other things come into this country for a better life all right yes and Donald trump is finally seems like allowing this transition to happen. Joe biden had tweeted out. The election is over. It's time to put aside the partisanship and the rhetoric designed to demonize one another. We have to come together so yes it. Looks like begrudgingly. We are gonna move forward. See this normally. I just i just don't see it. I mean relatively normal by trump's hasn't been don't see it ending just just normally i just don't see it. I think he'll be going party map people. He pardoned manual. You need to start himself. I don't know if he can do that. Donald watching cnn last night. They don't know if he can actually do that. It's never been done before if nothing in the constitution as you can't if i'm not mistaken it doesn't have to be locked up. I i have no idea. Us covid nineteen cases. could reach twenty million. They're saying by inauguration day on january twentieth but by december tenth. They're saying that they could start Soon after december distributing the covid nineteen vaccine. They are going to start doing some testing in pregnant women and children though so you know a lot of people are reluctant to actually take this vaccine but right now they have to show that it's safe and make sure that group can take it. They also said that Doctors are saying that. The cdc warn people about the side effects from kobe vaccine shots and they said it will not be a walk in the park. So you have to get the first shot of the vaccine then you have to come back and get a second shot also requires two doses and doctor is worried patients. Come back won't come back for a second dose because of the unpleasant side effects after the first show that could include Symptoms like muscle pains chills headaches. Which is also symptoms associated with malikova nineteen and. They also need to make sure people are aware of that. You governor cuomo in new york and you hit joe biden. Who say that. We have to get this to the african american community. I because you know they're the ones being impacted by it the most. They don't feel like that about anything else. They don't feel like that when it comes to bed education. They don't feel like now and come to the economic equity packages. You know they don't feel like that when it comes to mental healthcare resources and our communities wadi such a rush to push this vaccine in the house it. I want to know health care where the healthcare workers in they said the elderly. And then everybody governor. Cuomo joe biden both said verbatim out of their mouth. We have to get this to the african american community for us. Because it's impacting the most. But i know they give it to healthcare workers. I know that was the first step in an elderly. But i mean. I'll be honest with you i. I'm at a point right now where i'm like yo. It is what it is. If i gotta take this vaccine i'm gonna take the vaccine. I missed my mother my father. I can't see them on thanksgiving. I probably won't see anymore more christmas. I'm tired i wanna see my mom. Can i call. My mom came out. Can i get my data hug. I'll be right behind you go guinea pig. Oh go guinea pig. Go get out there go. Do you think they might make you be permanently black right. You might not have the die. No more turned black. But your skin turns agree. Take that vaccine i. I won't die as long as i was so many people dying like this has been a fw. And i wanna. I wanna see mama pops. Like i want to spend time with the moments in time for thanksgiving. I don't want to zoom them for thanksgiving ash is well. Guess what thanksgiving's tomorrow on somebody today with a vaccine. You better not take it. Hey heard you want to see you got some needlepoint wrong with. You might be arrows and five. Joe biden cabinet. Dr ruth simmons needs to be his secretary of education because we are not the greatest and most long lasting former systemic. Racism has been in the education system. So there's not a black person that's gonna be Tre treasury secretary roussy be secretary of.

"president barack obama" Discussed on Coffee and Books
"How they treated the obama book and you're right. I mean the preorders were crazy. People coming in and what kind of people are using buying this book really all kinds of people. The variety of different people that come to our stores we've had parents younger. People stood at boca look like students. We a lot of our regulars. it's a range. When was the last time you saw get this kind of attention. Might in terms of like retail attention. I almost want to say that the obamas are are always just as incompatible sales. Thank to becoming. Michelle obama's memoir. Yes i think that might be right when and again independent bookstores and especially black independent bookstores. A lot of our lights stayed all and there's a lot of people around this country whose lights stayed on because michelle obama ito black women saving us man when shell obama came through people come through by two and three people were buying them for birthday presents. Christmas gifts kwanza gives thanksgiving conversation pieces coffee tables. I mean bookstores that would normally maybe have a one hundred transactions where now having two hundred transactions a day those who were selling fifty bucks a day were now selling ninety books in a day and those differences those margins make a huge difference for for independent bookstore. So and i think you're right. I mean the the racial diversity of it is very interesting for michelle. Obama obviously whole bunch of black women bought it but a rain across section of demographic purchase it when you look at the obama demographics of who's buying the book. Do you see it as different. I should say a barack obama. Michelle obama i think i have been surprised to see as strong numbers of all kinds of a white people about eight. Buying the obama book. Iraq's book this time yeah as opposed to the older black women who came out strong. for from michelle obama's. That's interesting. yeah i think. Black women have been supportive of the obamas period nearby and they're coming in store buying it in large numbers and anecdotally. What i'm seeing for barack obama's book is the same. The black women are coming in buying the book whereas women will by both. I think a lot of men are buying the barack obama book at a higher rate which isn't surprising given gingered purchasing patterns. I think it's interesting to see that when people come in..
Trump slams global climate agreement Biden intends to rejoin
"Donald trump rallied against the paris climate accord on sunday telling world leaders at a virtual summit that the agreement was designed to cripple the us economy. Not save the planet to protect american workers. I withdrew the united states from the unfair and one sided paris. Climate accord a very unfair act for the united states. Trump said video from the white house to the group of twenty summit hosted by saudi arabia. He's comments came during a discussion among the world's largest economies on safeguarding. The earth president-elect. Joe biden who takes office in january has said he will rejoin the global pact that the us helped forge five years ago trump contended. The international accord was not designed to save the environment. It was designed to kill the american economy. It is not clear whether trump has even read the paris. Climate accord trump. Who has worked to undo. Most of president barack obama's efforts to fight climate change said that since withdrawing from the climate agreement the us has reduced carbon emissions more than any nation. That is true but it's not that remarkable with its giant economy. The us has far more roar emissions of climate damaging carbon dioxide to cut than any other country except china a more telling measure of progress in various countries is to look at what percentage of emissions country has cut since two thousand five. The united states hasn't been even in the top ten. In percentage of greenhouse gas emission reductions more than one hundred and eighteen nations have ratified the accord which aims to keep the increase in average temperatures worldwide well below two degrees celsius and ideally no more than one point five degrees compared with pre industrial levels scientists. Say that any rise beyond two degrees celsius could have a devastating impact on large parts of the world raising sea levels stoking tropical storms and worsening droughts and floods. The us formally exited the paris pact on november fourth. On saturday the us formally left the open skies treaty which permits thirty plus nations to conduct unarmed observation. Flights over each other's territory. Those overflights set up decades ago to promote trust and avert conflict during the discussions at the climate session. President xi jinping of china the world's largest emitter said the g twenty should continue to take the lead in tackling climate change and push for the full implementation of the paris accord

President Obama reflects on his presidency after leaving office
"Meanwhile, former President Barack Obama is criticizing President Donald Trump, the 44th, president of the United States, sitting down with CBS's 60 Minutes. First volume of Barack Obama's memoir coming
"Transition. The first volume of former President Barack Obama's memoir is due to be released this week. We have details from NPR's Asia. Roscoe in an interview with NPR's Michele Martin, Barack Obama says he never bought into the idea of a post racial America. He says he understands that some people expect the U. S to have made more progress. When it comes to race. I think the reason that I don't plunge into despair Probably has to do with The fact that I tend to take a long view on things. Obama also talked about the need for pursuing bipartisanship, he says. There's a way to reach across the aisle without being a sap. But he admits that voters tend to reward rather than punish lawmakers who choose to take the obstructionists route.

I have been talking to any one moment in cracked me up. She said i felt like. I took off my weighted blanket. My bra and my extensions. So that's how. I felt for sure. Maybe one day when i'm president and he's able to do that because he saw it in president barack obama who he would call he calls president bronco and and so president bronco was out there in just being there provided a whole new opportunity for people and so i am really excited that we will have that for free black Young people to know that leadership can look like a vice president elect comma harris. It's amazing i i don't have kids have nieces and nephews and i think about my niece in particular that she only knows. Hillary clinton are miss hillary as she hall alter who ran for president and now he knows kamala so for her. This is just so normal that it's gonna be weird for them if they see a presidential ticket without a woman they're gonna be lightweight with. I think we're done with the idea of all white male tickets. I actually think people will people will think what what is that. And how did we get their that. It is a new day in many ways. Because of that and i think this country will be grappling with that going forward absolutely and we know that we have our new president lagged or vice president elect and i was telling so many people when they were saying. Oh he's up in the polls. This is going to be a blow out as i know this this racist high. I talked about it on the last episode by there are still people who were fine with the direction the country was going in in. Its because those are people that no matter who is in office in what they're doing they're going to be fine or they're okay. If the bad things are happening to people not Horsely bad is just a reality. I i will tell you. I believe in celebrating deeply. And so i was in a celebrate tori spirit beacon with me. I brought it into our team this morning. And i said guys we got to do that. I know what is brewing next. And what comes next the diagnosis of like what. What led to the electoral outcomes that we have so step to celebrate and i the parties around the world. I felt like i did that. Pretty effectively step two is having a data fueled standing of how we got there and that you know the two of the matter is when all of the votes are finally counted. You know it's likely somewhere. North of five million. More people voted for the biden harris ticket than not but it is also the case that we have to grapple with the more than million people who supported donald trump. And why

Former President Barack Obama criticizes President Trump
"Presidency and the vice-presidency is bigger than any of us. So i have instructed my team to work as hard as we can to make sure that this is a sex successful transition for the president elect president obama four years ago showing professionalism and class to an incoming president who offered very little of that in return so perhaps it's a fitting final contrast for everyone to see. Donald trump is incapable of meeting that standard. You could call it. The obama enter. You could also just call it the typical presidential transition standard if you want but it is one more reinforcement of these times. We're living in tumult revolt. Fear an america veering between presidents. That are so obviously different. Obama to trump to buy the former president waited deliberately until after the results to offer some more personal candor about all of this. Obama has intentionally held his long awaited presidential biography until after this race a choice that would of course keep the spotlight on the democratic nominee and the current president obama made that choice of course before he knew the nominee would ultimately reflect his own choice back in two thousand eight for who should be president if not him. Joe biden and as part of this new book tour. We are now hearing from obama for the first time about some extra donald trump as a severe aberration when donald trump won. I stayed up until two thirty in the morning. And i then called donald trump to congratulate him his margin of victory over. Hillary clinton wasn't greater than half. Joe by martin over him i think about john mccain calling george and laura bush welcoming you and michelle obama to the white house interest not have been more gracious. Everyone knows obama doesn't really take a lot of cheap shots if anything his own. Supporters have been frustrated sometimes now measure he can be he will look for any reasonable interpretation of opponents actions. He'll try to think through their views. He'll discuss that in public. I think those traits actually made him an excellent writer and lawyer by the way so it is notable that today and these new remarks obama does not even see any reasonable way to cut donald trump emotional or theoretical slack. Barack obama is not joining this odd snowflake chorus of enablers who say donald trump needs days and days of processing time that no other politician ever gets or the conservatives who suddenly think one man's delicate snowflake ary and narcissistic foolery should hold up the national security transition of this country. No no sir. Today in these two interviews barack obama hits the stakes and the costs of donald. Trump's failed to concede and active choice to fan misinformation. Which could hamper civic life for a long time to come. They appear to be motivated in part because the president doesn't like to lose and Never admits loss. If you're listening to some of the talk radio that trombone are listening to if you're watching fox news if you're getting these tweets. Those allegations are presented as facts. So you've got millions of people out there who think of there must be cheating because the president said so. Where do we go from here for. President obama is telling everyone it's bigger than trump addressed his top republicans abdicating their responsibility. They obviously didn't think there was any fraud going on because they didn't say anything about it for the first two days. But there's damage to this because what happens. Is that the peaceful transfer of power. The notion that any of us who attain unelected office whether it's dogcatcher or president are servants of the people. It's a temporary job. we're not above the rules. We're not above the law. That's the essence of our democracy. that's deep. The jobs are temporary. we are all temporary. What we're trying to build to on our best days democracy injustice. That's permanent.

Obama says Trump's unfounded claims are "delegitimizing" democracy
"60 Minutes, former President Barack Obama Addresses President Trump's unfounded so far claims of voter fraud. The president doesn't like to lose and never admits loss. I'm more troubled by the fact that other Republican officials who clearly no better are going along with this are humoring. Him in this fashion. It is one more step in de legitimizing not just the incoming Biden administration, but democracy generally. And that's a dangerous path. President Trump has so far refused to concede the election to president like Joe Biden and has launched a syriza of lawsuits alleging widespread fraud in several states. But there has been no evidence presented to support the president's claims. Mr Obama will peer in his first interview about his new book, A Promised Land on Sunday on both 60 minutes. "President. Barack Obama went out to try to whip voters before the midterms needs speeches in Milwaukee. And in Detroit. And one of the things who was noted for in in these speeches was she went after President Trump never mentioned him by name. In in any of these speeches? But it was very clear about the person to whom he was referring I mean, it's it's pretty obvious. I wanna say this. And maybe I'm wrong. And I'm sure listener will correct me. I do not remember previous presidents going out on the stump during like mid terms or anything like that to try to whip up the base for their candidate and trashing the sitting president. I just don't remember that always seemed to be something that they did do they retired. They were gone at least for the weather successor. Was there? They never really said anything Jimmy Carter was really the first one to breach that protocol. I don't remember any other even Bill Clinton. I don't remember coming out and trashing the sitting president. They've all they've all sort of maintained a tradition of staying quiet and letting the many other people who want to criticize the president do that. And George W Bush was like famously quiet about the Obama administration. Not speaking at all just hiding and painting seemingly mean, they were gracious and and plate and had ungentlemanly about I think their view, and is probably pretty. Sound is like the job is tough enough. There are a million critics. Why should I be among them? Yeah. Well, President Obama apparently does not adhere to that. At all. Hold on. I lost it. Anyway. Also originally from Saint Louis to President Barack Obama John Brennan of the CIA, former CIA director the Clintons in Chappaqua, New York. George Soros, Eric Holder and others. If you were trying to find the person responsible for sending these packages. What would you do? All right now. That's just what the starters are doing realize that we've got ten packages. We know of that have been either hand delivered by courier or sent through the mail. This somewhat follows earlier this year, we had a bomber who was sending packages in Austin, Texas. He sent about five packages people were killed and injured. But of course, Charlie we can go back to the nineteen forties. Nineteen fifties. The so-called mad bomber of New York. George metavsky over eighteen year, period. He delivered are sent something like thirty three devices twenty two of which blew up, but we are leaps and bounds ahead of the forties. "Adding to delays coming away from the fifty seven westbound sixty past grand a crash reported there. It's eight oh seven it's morning edition from NPR news. I'm Steve Inskeep. In washington. And I'm David Greene in Culver City, California. We are following breaking news from New York and also from Washington DC this morning about the discovery of a number of suspicious packages. Two of them were intercepted on their way to former secretary of state, Hillary Clinton and former President Barack Obama and the New York City police department is now saying it's investigating a suspicious package that was. Sent to the building in Manhattan that houses CNN's broadcast center there, and let's turn out to NPR Justice. Correspondent Ryan Lucas who is following this and Ryan what is the latest here? Well, the latest is actually out of New York City. And that's where the New York police department says it's investigating a suspicious package at ten Columbus circle. That is the building that houses CNN's office the police department special operations unit that includes an explosive ordinance disposal unit. They are responding CNN boss. Jeff Zucker has told staff that a suspicious package was discovered in the mail room. The New York office was being vacuum out of an abundance of caution. There aren't any details at this point on the package itself. But NYPD as well as the FBI and the bureau of alcohol, tobacco, firearms and explosives are all on the scene investigating find out as much as they can, of course. Yeah. It's it's been something to watch a lot of these journalists who are literally outside look on their phones reporting on this since they've been evacuated from their studios. Okay. So. We have this suspicious package in New York. This follows earlier announcements about these other potential explosive devices catches up to date on that. Right. So the secret service said this morning in a statement that it intercepted two suspicious packages. One was addressed to Hillary Clinton at her home in Westchester county. New York that one was discovered late last night. And then early this morning. A second one a second suspicious package addressed to Barack Obama was discovered here in Washington DC now both packages were immediately identified as potential explosive devices. This was during routine screening that they were identified. The secret service says that neither Clinton nor Obama ever actually had their hands on the packages. They never received them. They were never truly at risk. But still obviously something of of concern that these were addressed to them the secret services working with FBI ATF as well to try to get to the bottom of this. And weren't we already talking about some potential attacks suspicious packages sent to George Soros, the billionaire philanthropist could there be some sort of relate related here. We'll certainly the timing of the package is being sent to Clinton and Obama and CNN as well, as as you mentioned, the explosive device that was discovered this week outside the home of George Soros, certainly raises questions that the timing is is suspicious. There's no clear indication at this point as to motive. This is something that is very much under investigation in very much in the early stages of the investigations FBI and ATF both say that you know, we are digging into this as quickly as we can. But these sorts of things take some time in this really is breaking news at has just happened in the past several hours. So the time. I mean is questionable at something that they're looking into. And the fact that George Soros has been demonized by people on the right? A lot of conspiracy theories targeting Soros, makes you know, you can you can try to build a narrative around that. But let's hold off on that we need to wait and see what the facts are. And then we can come to conclusions. All right. The latest from NPR's Ryan Lucas Ryan. Thanks a lot. We appreciate it. Thank you. This is a tough midterm election for Republicans. Although there is no evidence yet that they're doomed though, the party in power usually loses. Ground Republicans are favored at this moment to hold the Senate. They're long shots at best to keep the house, although many of the decisive elections there are close. So where do Republicans place their final bets? Stephen law is with us again. He leaves the Senate leadership fund for the Republican side. Good morning. Thanks for coming by morning. So would you just explain what the role is of groups like yours at this moment when individual democratic star candidates people like Beto rock of Texas. Have raised tons of money. What does the group like yours do for the Republican side? Sure. Will we look at all the different races? We try to figure out which ones are the most competitive and most importantly where our own involvement would make a critical difference. And so we're placing our last bets in these final weeks in the same way that outside groups on the other side are as well. Would you give me an idea of where some of those bets are going sure as a majority leader McConnell described it pretty colorfully? He said a lot of these races. If not all of them are knife-fights dark alleys, they're very very close. And so we're investing in states like, Indiana, and Arizona and Tennessee, Nevada, Missouri. West Virginia all states where those races are essentially within the margin of error, and these are states where our money matters imaginable, even a year ago that you would have to invest money in Tennessee to keep Republican Senate seat on the Republican side. Well, yeah. Yeah. Me too. Tennessee is definitely become much more Republican state Democrats recruited a very strong candidate in Phil Bredesen's. And and he's somebody who's. Known to the electorate. So this is a much more hard-fought race than many thought, we are view was that it was going to be competitive from the get-go. That close in the last couple of weeks. But you're saying it's not decided you want to put some money there. Oh, we've been active for for weeks and weeks there we think it's a pretty close race. We're very bullish on mar Marsha Blackburn. But this is a tough race. Are you still supporting Rick Scott, the governor of Florida who's trying to win a Senate seat, but has fallen behind in the latest polls against Bill Nelson? Yeah. Our our view actually is that Rick Scott has narrowly ahead, and we think that's a very competitive race. We have not invested their today in part because he has his own super Pac and obviously a fair amount of money of his own. But we're very interested in that race. And we think that one is going to be one of the ones that will be seeing in the win column by the time. Whatever survey I saw you don't accept you've got your own Pollinger. Yeah. No. I I think it's a very close race. But I think he is a few points ahead. And I I feel like he's favored to win there. What about the massively publicized? Ted cruz. Beto O'Rourke race in Texas. It's an exciting race. It's got a lot of color to it. And personality, I think at the end of the day Ted Cruz wins that race not withstanding all the money that better award has raised. I think Beddoes. Problem is that he peaked too early. Got a lot of attention, particularly from the national press. And I think has Texans have taken a good hard. Look at that. They said he seems like a nice young man, but not ready to represent Texas. So a couple of weeks ago we were in Kentucky talking with voters. We were at a particular house district, but you get a Representative slice of people. And it seemed to us that it was a nationalized election by which I mean, people know a lot about President Trump. They have opinions, but they don't necessarily know their candidates all that well in the races, you're focused on is this really a nationalized election over very much. So I think midterms off our I mean, this is the first election, you have to make at least some sort of a course adjustment. If you want to with respect to the current president that was the case, obviously with President Obama in two thousand ten Senate races are a little bit different. The candidates are bigger. The campaigns are bigger we feel reasonably certain that the Republicans will hold the Senate majority. But there's a lot of significant issues that that that could complicate that as we head to the final week. What do you mean? Well, the map is very much in Republicans favors a favorable political. Topography force in these races of the Democrats have some good candidates. And the most important thing is they have a huge financial advantage race by race candidate by candidate democratic candidates are outspending Republican candidates by a factor of two or three or four to one. And that's a very very significant disparity, which means groups like ours. Need to come in and try to make it more of a fair fight news reports indicate the groups like yours have more money than the corresponding democratic groups, but you're saying the individual democratic candidates have the war chests. Yes. That's right. I mean some cases because their incumbents they were able to raise money over six years. What were ours had to go through primaries, and that sort of thing, but there is a significant candidate versus candidate disparity? Fortunately, we do have more resources in the closing weeks. And we're gonna use that to our maximum advantage part of the reason, it's a nationalized election. Of course is because President Trump is wanted it. So has made it about him in the way that he's talked about the election and campaign for people, and he's made a lot of provocative statements while campaigning in recent days. Let's listen to just one of them. Learn it sort of became. A nationalist. And I say really we're not supposed to use that word. You know, what I am on the nationalists? Okay, nationalists that can just mean in favor of the nation. But people hear that and they hear white nationalist. He knows that's what people here. That's why he knows he's not supposed to say it is it helpful for the president to be kind of signaling in that direction. I think in the states where over competing in for the Senate. I think him being a big factor in this race is helpful. I think a lot of people here that verbiage and they're concerned about border security. They're concerned about immigration security. They're concerned about trade and on those issues. I think in the states where we're competing. He is on the side of the majority of voters. You know, I I think you have to be careful about that kind of language obviously could be provocative, but on issues like trade on immigration. He is singing the tune of of a majority of voters in these states where we're competing for senators very specific places where you're trying to keep the Senate. Yes, Steven law. Thanks very much for coming by always. Appreciate it. Well, thank you for having. He is with the Senate leadership fund. Years after he vanished in Syria. The fact that Roe versus Wade is on the brink of being overturned and encourage People to contact their senators and make their voices known we've, announced that our overall budget for ad will, be five million dollars and I think you'll, see that spread out from now until the time that this vote is taken how does your budget compared to the budgets of the conservative groups that for, years and years have been fighting to have a more conservative court well we'll never match the conservative groups dollar for. Dollar but I also don't think we need to when the American people by majority of, two by a margin of two to one believe that Roe versus Wade should not be overturned by majority of two, to one do not believe the. President Trump should be. Taking away health care for people with preexisting conditions? We're going to see a lot of grassroots energy? And activism come out? And I think? That people's voices they're telephone calls they're marching in. The streets I think that's going to overwhelm any money disadvantage we might have you helped oversee the confirmations of Justice Elena, Kagan and Justice Sonia Sotomayor are you going to be taking part in the prep of democr- senators for these hearings or how are you going to be taking part i think we leave it to the democratic senators and their staff and the legal experts that they can sell to figure out exactly what lines of questioning and issues that they might be interested in but i will say one of the things that.

"Best and give your best advice to the secretary of defense or the secretary of homeland security of the president and i have to say with president barack obama i would give my best advice and sometimes it was very different from the advice he was getting from others in the situation room and sometimes fairly often where he would come out would be different than my best advice but i never thought where he came out was unreasonable i thought he always reached a reasonable solution to a difficult problem so may not have to the letter followed my advice but well that's not a bad result i can defend that and implement that three times you wrote a rent letter of resignation but didn't send it correct what were the no wonder you're going to go jay you're gonna you're gonna say three times i was version four three times i wrote it and just the writing was was cathartic and sell you say which which i completely understand but jay anytime you are you are you you are a strong person principled strong moral character for you to even sit down and write version one what was it or version two or version three well let me let me answer it this way when you're in a senior political position if two if to know where your exit ramps are you have to know.

"President barack obama deported more illegals than any of his modern day predecessors i don't wanna go some people like to go back to the days of george washington we won't go back that far but it's it's a joke and not not the situation because the with the families that's sad i wouldn't wish this on any family and it's pretty avoidable it's it's one hundred percent avoidable but we have to look out for our nation we have to look out for the american people and these people coming over the border they can be part of the american family they could become american citizens again no one is stopping them so just come here legally be part of the celebration here be part of you can be anything you want to be and you get out of where you were but just come legally but all of this again fake outrage is a message that the democrats are latching onto because they have nothing going into the midterms and trump he's got momentum's and he is steamrolling the comet the economy is doing extremely well wall street a little bit of roller coaster because of the tariff situation we're gonna talk about that a little later and they don't know how to stop him his unorthodox way of being president love him or hate him he's getting things done his approval rating depending on where you look fluctuates around forty eight forty nine percent people are happy with what he's doing.

"And one of the one of the most recent ones that i could find an it's it was highly publicized was the story of the woman who basically said she was black and she used that to go on to be the leader of the spokane double n double acp her name was rachel belle she wasn't black was why she's born to white parents she self identified as black we might not even know that today but a reporter who came to her home she thought a glowing story about her work for the end p walked in and out of the question are you black and she ran away from the reporter knowing of course that she couldn't answer that question correctly senator elizabeth warren has claimed something because of her answers ancestry and her heritage because she grew up in oklahoma and that has been questioned by a lot of people including the president nited states president donald trump whereas a nickname for pocahontas and he uses it to tormentor and teaser in the president's famous for using nicknames well i saw column recently making the claim that president calling out senator elizabeth ward is the same thing as the president calling out the previous president barack obama for not having a birth certificate and falsely accusing him according to this this communist of using the birtherism story here's the distinction here president barack obama didn't call himself he didn't identify as somebody that had an issue with his birth certificate that was what something that political candidates did elizabeth warren is in this discussion because she checked that box that said she was native american she's identified with that origin and his telling stories related to that and what it means here's what she said to nbc when they asked her about this answered actually submit to a dna test my daddy i saw my mother when they're both teenagers you fell in love with his tall quiet girl who played.

"Not for the social scene some might have seen as part of his job but rather around his family this is former president barack obama who ended up being pretty pretty stridently criticised sometimes for not working the whole political scene and social scene in washington more vigorously dear he wasn't twenty twelve talking about the demands of fatherhood when were in town here in washington in the evenings um 630 we want to be at the dinner table with our kids and i want to be helping with their homework and i think that sometimes interpreted as it may not wanting to uh be out there slap in back some and wheeling and dealing it at really has more do with this the the stage we are in our lives a map respirate when fathers are not fully engaged how do you see it is it is it mainly because of economic demands or is because of cultural preconceptions about how they're going to behave and now they're going to engage from what i'm shannon i can really only speak personally from what i see from people around me and again within the group it's more economic demand especially i mean even taking my own situation day on certain demands out i i wanted to take off desperately and i just can't i wanna to be there for this thing and that thing and i can't from what i find in um and my circles personal and social circles online is that the culture i believe the culture has shifted so much that.
