"Vain never made a living off of our before and now i just quit my job when it seemed like the world was falling apart artists. Silly right. I struggled with this for a while. So i took a month to travel in the uk for the first time. I was nervous about this trip. Because i was traveling alone. And i didn't know how people in these countries felt about black people. But i went to berlin prague budapest and this tiny british town called elction in berlin sat down with the owner of the biggest comic bookstore chain there and we talked about how as a kid. His favorite hero was captain america but certain issues comic book. He never got to read as a kid. Because captain america was fighting nazis in those books and nothing would. Nazis was garden in germany. Even if they were getting beat up. So let's think about that for a moment in germany. Nazis were banished from everything. here in the states. We've erected statues to confederates who betrayed our country. Anyway i thought about this man this comic book fan who grew up in germany but fell in love with the story of an american icon and i realized a well written comic book or graphic novel careers someone all the way across the world thought about revolution how whenever society needs to change that changes inspired at least in part by the artist thought about how dictators and despots regularly murder and discredit artists. Hitler's people came up with the term specifically to discredit artist. degenerate art. They were burning books and paintings. But why why were. The leaders of the nazi party dedicating their attention to destroying art if are really has no power. If it's really a silly waste of time. The why are dictators afraid of it. Why would nazis burning books and paintings. Why was mccarthy so dedicated to blacklisting artists in the nineteen fifties. Why was stalin's government so focused on censoring artists in russia because art scares dictators because they understood something that i've been struggling to understand my entire life. Art is powerful. Art is important. Art can change hearts and minds all the way across the world in eighteen ninety. Four russian author. "And we said in so don regan. Walk down the hall to the oval office and where we could hear from the president himself and this is shortly after a myth. All right so yes. There's no doubt that's going on. And we speechwriters thought. The old man had gone soft on communism but is it. Isn't it also possible. That mrs thatcher she shared some of the honestly the confusion and naive. Gorbachev himself reagan's regencies all the way to the bottom of communism he knows the system cannot soviet. Communism cannot be reformed. Remove the gulag. Remove the iron fist and it will collapse whereas she really does seem to suppose that the soviet union the soviet communism itself could be reformed. Alright i now leave it to you to tell me why i'm wrong gesture anti somewhere. I don't think she really thought that. I think she really thought that soviet communism a reformed but i think she felt that they were winning to take up. The reagan phrase They the westwood winning and the company's losing and it was a due to manage the defeats of the communist royalva. Them let extreme violence break out. She was always very concerned by a reactionary communism that would hurt outdoor rejection. Nitty succeeded in the air after just obvious ninety-one and she wanted to miss orderly possible transition and she didn't want the russians kidding people in eastern europe or indeed. Anyway i see and so it was a sort of management is you. You feel that more. If you're live on the continent of europe than if you of course live way. Way in from way away from there in the united states. It didn't think it was a fundamental disagreement with reagan on that point that it was quite a big difference of degree. Right right okay. God europe nineteen seventy-three britain joins the european union or as it was at the time the european economic community with the support of margaret thatcher. Nine hundred eighty eight. Prime minister thatcher gives an address in bruges belgium during that speech. She says this of course is in herself alone. We have not successfully rolled back. The frontiers of the state in britain only to see them reimposed at a european level with european superstate exercising. A new dominance from brussels close quote in europe. You write this speech caused. This is your these are your words. Absolute horror between seventy three and eighty eight. Let changed and she goes to the european community veterans. She didn't like what she saw. She really never anything about foreign affairs. Until nineteen seventy nine when she became prime minister and then she had bruising four year negotiation about trying to get a budget rebate out of them. And this on rub into to soul about as a result of that and she never was a mad enthusiast for european community because she was worried about sovereignty but she felt it was an economic necessity and she thought it was useful in the cold war as communist alliance closer encounters with it made have more disillusioned but even in the bruges speech that you quote from. That's a eurosceptic speech but an end to european speech. She's not saying let's get the hell out of here. It's more trying to make a bigger better york. She says speech. We must never forget the prague budapest and also a great european cities which is throwing down a gauntlet to the soviets but also to the to europe to to the european community because they were germans johnson. These places there. She was saying bigger looser. Please let's not have more stadium. Let's have a looser alliance of democratic nations because you're right in the trajectory you at your question implied so that she gets more and more cross and by the time she left office in the end of nineteen ninety. She was very angry indeed because she didn't want to single currency that was being proposed. We can we come to that. I've got a clip this is this is prime minister's question time november twenty. Second nineteen ninety. She has already announced that she will stand down in the leadership contest and indeed on six days later on november twentieth. She leaves downing street for the last time. And in this clip. We here someone shout. She'll be governor and what he means as governor of the european central bank. You tell us whether she intends to continue her own personal fight against a single.

"I've actually personally. John before it time of the year and things that they would be awesome to do in the winter as well. I have not seen heather. This excited about a podcast early. Really doing this much research about a podcast during the three and a half hours. When i was sitting up the tech there was a good hour and a half where she was doing her notes. And i thought he was doing notes for multiple. Podcasts and i came back. I'm still working on my road trip. And i thought like if this is a debate. This is a throwdown showdown. I would get. You'd be going down you're gonna fully. Were just going to have a friendly banter banter. Well i was only researching because some of the trips that we've done were a while ago. I mean gosh. We haven't even really been on many trips this whole year of twenty twenty because of covid so i had to remember some of the names of the places the towns the national parks all sorts of those things and then two places. I haven't really like the one. I've never done this road trip before. So it's just kind of one that i thought would be cool to do all right so we each came up with five row chips some of them. We've been on some of them. We have in so we didn't hold ourselves to having been on these before and also when we say winter trips we're talking about in northern hemisphere winter so it would be winter for us here in north carolina if we stayed here so we're talking essentially november december january february right and let me just tease this out. My number one is bit of a cheat because it is a warm weather place. I mean that's totally our winter. I don't think that's a cheat and that's totally fun announces summer i up. That would be yes that makes sense to me. Nice little for shattering there. i well. let's just get into it. And i actually have a bit of a cheat to as an honorable mentions and you're like i don't even know. What can they five. How will get five now. You have core of course an honorable mention i well. That's his yeah. I did mine quick so you did a lot of research. I did mine fairly quick. So you'll you know you might pick up on that my honorable mention because we're talking about best winner roy. Chips is actually not a road trip. this is what. Hey this is that. I would love to take trains around your up fair during the winter so we just the city. It's not okay all the cities of europe. sure yes. I'd love all the cities. Of course who wouldn't. I mean anyone out. They're going to say no. I don't want to do all the cities by all the cities. At what i was getting to was a lot of the fun eastern european cities. We just did a podcast about where we would want to spend the holidays. May whether we've been there or not and for both you. And i spoil. I'm not going to give it away if you haven't listened but goes and both you and i had the same number one and found in eastern europe so for example. I think it'd be awesome. Take a train and you go to like vienna. Brady slava prague. Budapest can even go up into the baltic and go to vilnius riga talent like those are all the capital cities of those countries. Obviously you can go to the other towns around too. But i just think that would be such an epic month-long whatever you could make it shorter. Spread it out but that would be so cool to do in the winter. Because everyone's gonna have their christmas market. Everything's gonna be decked out that would be so much fun and so yeah i guess for me. This is almost a little more specific than just the winter. I specifically would want to go then time. Yeah in december the month of december training around europe to quote unquote. All the the city. Really i mean some of those big eastern europeans. And i have to say that. I'm i guess if i'm going to jump on the train for honorable mentions but i'm changing but i'm but i will just give off to that we've actually done in wintertime to places the first one was italy where we did trains all through italy and we started in venice and we went to florence and we went to rome those three big cities and it was awesome. It was january so it was cold but there were no tourists which is sometimes the best part about travelling in winter. If you're going to places that are you know. Their main season is summer. If you go in winter you literally don't have to have lines. I mean we went to the vatican. We went to all these museums. No lines we didn't even have to preorder tickets. We just walked up and went in. So that is that is cool. Definitely and then the other one which i don't know i didn't put this on my list but maybe i should have. We did ireland at the holidays. And we weren't there for christmas but we went for new year's eve and it was lovely writer years even then for two weeks after into january. Yes and again dublin. Beautiful very festive. The pub scene or the christmas trees and the lights very very fun and then we did a road trip all around i guess like kerry and The dingle peninsula that was amazing and january. Hardly any tourists ring of kerry done best time. You like go man..

"Dining the walk under the archway bridge. See the amazing astronomical clock before heading to Budapest for your last two nights. Affectionately known as the Queen of the Danube with large squares and decadent buildings. You will discover the history of this beautiful city before you head home. I will tell you Budapest is the Paris of the East and it actually looks like you're in Paris. And I'm done been to Budapest yet to visit the city just skirted the outsides of the town is weird driving. I was there about I guess about 30 years ago with CBS we did of Eastern Capital's broadcast right after the wall came down in the Soviet Union fell apart, but we were only there for a few hours. All the hotels are maintaining a high level of cleansing and sanitation in all the common areas on the restaurants within the hotels offer waiter service to maintain social distancing majors. Is it flexible? Yeah. In fact, most of the airlines will permit change is subject to a fee for seasonality. If, of course, you were wanting to change to the peak season or whatever. What's included roundtrip airfare into Paris and out of Budapest. Two nights, parents and a four star centrally located hotel will be decent flights from Paris to Prague, two nights in Prague in a four star centrally located hotel. We've had hundred three out of the last hundred and four dinners together. So I'm sure she's really excited about time with her husband. Sure she does. I'm sure she loves the fact that every day. You're golfing. I am playing a fair amount of golf. It's you know what I mean. I used to just practice a lot, but now like so many days Vinnie and I'll wake up and do you want to go to the range today while we could or we could just go play. I mean we have time so. We've played golf. She is not a golfer at all and then trying to convince her to come with me, and at least you know, give it a shot, and but it's Yeah I. Mean You know it's I'm sure it's the same for? For a lot of families and a lot and we spend a lot of time together anyway, and we have a lot of great meals at home, but this has been made. We've eaten out twice. I think now in. March fourteenth and whenever the shutdown started to me, we've had. We've had a lot of time together and a lot of meals together and I'm sure she's ready for she. She'd be ready for me. Go Edmonson stay there for awhile. Not will being away from you has been the best four months of my life I could tell you. Why it sure appreciate. It let me know what we were going to do. In about nine days. Get on a plane and fly to Prague. Budapest remember that yeah boy. Doesn't that seem like forever? that. We were talking about that. I mean it's. Who knows what the you know winter? If anything goes back to normal, it would have been fun I was I was really looking forward to that trip. And and of course the you know just ten days full of of hearing the glass half empty stories last half empty perspective on the world from from my favorite beat writer. That's what you miss. The most does meals on the road when you and I are just fighting over just nonsense. Right Yup that the there is no asses ever GonNa work where we're going nowhere. team has done. But I. "Have it all figured out So yeah I'm trying to. I'm trying to go to more of those types of places or even just like the small town outside of the broad neck instead of going to Dubrovnik Unless it's like in the middle of winter. Nobody wants to go there and then then. I think it's a good time to go. Yeah I think that's I think that's great advice for people who are flexible enough like like you and I both are. Don't have to be a certain place at a certain time for the most part yet traveling in the off season even shoulder season to some of these popular places. Parents always GONNA be packed. Listen you could go in the winter you can go in the summer. It's always going to be packed but I think there's value in seeing it but there are times you can go when it's less packed or cheaper or whatever you're looking for and then trying to push yourself a little bit to say all right what's the next and and this isn't always easy but trips cow can help with it right like what's the next. Prague. Oh the next Prague Budapest okay. Well now Budapest getting back. What'S NEXT ONE. Oh Krakow you know whatever like there will always be a level or or or the next thing that's on the horizon and you know one of the ways to find that out is just by doing research and you know again reading different things and it's not like none of us will be the first person in a certain area to discover it right like we can talk about Georgia all we want and it's undiscovered. I was not the first traveller travel to grow their. You're not the first person to go there right. People told us about it. But if you keep your ear to the ground a bit you're going to find these places that goes back to that underrated or were under the radar places for me too that that's where it is right. That's that's kind of brings you back to the essence of travel because it isn't you know people serving tourists and these people don't see a ton of tourists and nats. What makes it fun because it makes it more authentic than for you then last question for you. What is the biggest travel mishap that you've run into whether whether it'd be recently or or at any point during your travels can you think of one that sticks out So I WANNA. They're always the best stories for sure. I I actually think that And I think there's some stigma like you travel a lot. You have it all figured out These these are not huge mishaps but I've had multiple times where I've I booked the flight for the wrong the wrong day or the hotel for the wrong day. I mean in the past like in the best two years. I I like to do a lot of alternative route flight hacking. Saw like you know as a way to like model and say see other destinations so I had I had. I wanted to go to L. Sankey. I and I needed to go to Budapest for something so I booked a round trip flight to Helsinki around show flight from Helsinki to Budapest and And I accidentally got from Budapest. Helsinki and undocked obviously didn't didn't really work I've also had times are shown up and cities at you know Midnight got to my hotel and they're like we don't have reservation for you and I'm like yes you do. Here's my reconfirmation for.

"We have to Anthony's Marco in whose son of Italy and and I tell you in person and we're talking about Italy and Sicily and the connections to Boston an hour into sort of a an area where it we're we're talking travel travel stories and I know that you love those because you tell me that that's that's the number one statement I get please tell me more travel stories and so it in addition to my stories you have Anthony here who's very who adds another layer here because he's a real a real food person and I I think it'll be fun to talk about Z. Z. pros and cons of staying in one place for us is moving around and you've done both okay how do you where where you're at in your life now how do you feel about when you go somewhere park down and just stay in one place or think well there's so many must see things I must see everything and move around well the funny thing is when we travel we always seem to take a tour for the first time if that's the country of origin and I think sometimes it's great to see it and usually when you're on a tour you stay and three or four different hotels sometimes two or three nights per stay in whatever city it is that's fine get the ground rules I get the lay of the land get the idea of where we are and then we go back on our own so the first time you go to a new country you take a tour exactly okay Prague Budapest you know we did Rome that way to us Portugal Spain you know where if we are we we always take a tour but then we go back and then we rent a car and then we do see the specific things we want to see but then we also go into the countryside where real people live yeah not Taurus that's the advantage of having a car yeah and I think that is something a lot of ways that I enjoyed because then you really begin to taste the food but the people truly eat I don't want veal parmesan in Rome what do you what do you what do you eat in Rome well what do they eat usually a piece of grilled meat with very nice sauce a few potatoes a very nice vegetable a good salad but it's all done in a way that is very different than here you mentioned earlier something that you talked about fennel yes fennel is something that not only do they use in Italy as a condiment at something like salary but for a new key as I know it I actually roasted very gently with light the kids offers licorice flavor to the lamb and I create a salsa out of it with a balsamic vinegar and you see the lamb nicely grilled you have the final offer new key which is actually somewhat soft but a very crunch to it and then you also have this balsamic vinegar which is almost like you think of vinegar is being tired but balsamic vinegar is a very soft mellow delicious flavor the little bit of all of oil and garlic it's something a lot of ways that I make at home but if I have it in Sicily Italy it's even better speaking of the differences in food Italian food I'm telling American food versus Italian Italian food a town in sandwich I noticed a huge difference I am in Monterosso in the temple terrace area hi a sandwich consisted simply of forgot your bread relatively fan it but it looked just circular with holes in the tops on yeah and then a piece of meat and a piece of cheese and that was it it was the oil on it but that was it which makes a good Sam was still to hike with and here of course the Italian sandwiches this big long thing crammed with all sorts of stuff well the funny thing is in both those which is this wonderful bakery in Boston's north and you can get a submarine sandwich if you order an Italian it probably has a half a pound of meat cheese but then I can put everything in that sounds horrible pickles lettuce tomatoes onions and things of that sort honestly it's the American Italian American interpretation of the for college yellow in a very simple piece off a dollar and a piece of prevalent cheese yeah but it's this grand sandwich that it's delicious but there's really nothing Italian very what's the word first for simple if you're if you're going on a hike anyway you know hi a few things in there the handkerchief and put it on a pole well that sounds good to rustic rustic rest rest because the word I was looking for one of the things is we would sometimes years ago we did right of flat in Rome and we would actually book fair and it was enjoyable I mean I would like actually I don't mind cooking but it was something of a lot of ways on to burn as I could do a three course dinner no stove just two burners so I would make savages fresh bread from the Campo de Fiori I'd have fresh cold cuts I have some fruit and things of the sort that make salmon Jizan bring along fruit and we'd go off and I'd read from my grandfather Mitchell's Baetica guide and I would actually then look at these monuments as we sat and munched on a sand wedge you know same thing in Sicily we'd read these stories about these things the nineteen hundred how our ancestors probably traveled and I thought to myself this must have been a fascinating glimpse safer Bostonian in nineteen hundred to maybe make a travel to Europe but that vacation was something that was the seven days it took seven days to cross by boat and then of course the train maybe from London right through to Italy you have to spend the entire summer so it was much more for the leisure class but in that instance it was also something the fees wonderful ruin still survive in our lifetime you know when you look at so follow and I have mentioned this earlier the photograph on the Facebook page the talked about this evening of a discussion beautiful buildings with these you know amber hued type buildings at the early evening with the water but the phone has this wonderful cathedral and it's almost like a Spanish style in the interior is incredible and I think sometimes this is what people remember not just the food but also these special moments folks if you can if you if you plan on Sunday traveling I recommend you don't put it off because you just don't know what the future holds it's doable and yada do it now if you think about it CBS news update democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders says he's going to scale back his campaign schedule after suffering a heart attack last week Sanders says for him that means probably not attending for rallies a day the senator said he should have paid more attention to his symptoms and urges others to do the same.

"Is you end up having amazing the desert that we have this Palestinian place, ending are still kind of talking about it only. Gosh. Yes. Right. Though me more. There is is called is called a hall Biza fin Greek seed olive oil cake, which you know, look that there is a time. I think it's actually found a recipe in the Washington Post years back that I have been meaning to make. So if you're in in in the market for finicky exceed as a flavor of desert, it was which I didn't know I was up until that moment. It was fantastic is really good awesome. Yeah. I mean, I guess you teach me about Prague Muthu past. 'cause I'm on my way, they are right now by the time goes live. I should be sitting Budapest everything goes to plan. And so, you know, I argued that I'm going to joke that was going to make you convinced me that instead of taking the international trips. I should stay and explore more domestic as they're sort of a parting shot a real compelling thing you can offer other than but it's just right here. Like make it easier on the convincing not to go to Prague Budapest because there would be much on vacation. Yeah. I just think we tend to think of the other being more interesting. I'm being far away. And I think an maiden were just repeating the argument from before. But that you don't really have to have a passport or fly all that way to travel the world because the world has come to the US, and so many different waves over time and created something entirely new. So like, the the Basque cuisine Elko may not look like the Basque cuisine you get in Spain. But it it it's mixed in with the ranching roots of of Nevada and has his own special things. So I think it's just you find uniqueness wherever you go in this country, and we stuck in our little bubbles guard jogger Fay's vast compared to say of e-content of Europe that you have to go a little further sometimes defined distinction. But it's there is need to look for it. Yeah. I guess one of the challenges. "I think it's probably pretty neat except again, colder weather, so you're going to you're going to spend less time there at least in that. Hey, I want to hang out at the beach type vibe. So I get it. You're you're stealing Croatia. You're stealing Greece. All of even even if you take Croatia and Greece I mean, well, if I take Croatia Greece, I think the beach argument becomes a deep big or closer because I don't think it becomes tied because there's so much more of of western Europe's. I'll even throw you bone in let you say that you can have grow Asia ingress, if you must, but I still have course, IKA and Malaita and all of those other beach. Dubrovnik you send your shit one of my favorite country. So I sent to Rini was pretty awesome, the beach Paros Greece's amazing. Cratia Greece area. It does become a bit a bit depending on who gets that part. That argument could change but could change, but those those beaches, and those areas are they they feel more western and they have some of the same. You know, landscape of the western Europe beaches. So I think I want to end mine my little segment here boy on the fact that if I can't convince you vice better, and I think I've done a very good job. If you're an adventurous traveler, and I'll just recapping my little magic bullet. If you're an adventurous traveler, you want something a little more or off the beaten path. You're definitely want something significantly cheaper. And by that, we mean half the price of western Europe. And probably a third the price of some of the pricier places in western Europe, Scandinavia parrot. Okay, your Monday and your point then for me. It's almost a no brainer with eastern Europe. Because it again, you can I love the idea that you can dip you're telling if you're if you're a little hesitant and you say, all right. Well, I've been western Europe. Or I get why western Europe easier. But I want to be a little more adventure someone explore a little more. Then you dip. You're telling you go to Prague Budapest. Oh, let me push further. And again, you're pulling it's really neat because you can just continue to pull layers off and you continue to push your comfort on little by little by little as you. Honestly, it's almost like if you just keep moving further east, you'll continue to get more rustic cheaper. But. It'll be it'll be harder traveler and you'll be like more off the beaten path. And that's what I absolutely love about eastern Europe is that you can continue to explore and have these these different experiences and different levels and feel like even though you're not the only person going through there. You can start to feel like men..
