"Okay, let's talk toilets. Not potty humor toilets, but when you're out and about and you gotta go, what do you go? Because increasingly, it's not a truly public restrooms. It's in facilities in shops and restaurants that are actually private businesses. Elizabeth yuko wrote about the state of public restrooms in this economy for Bloomberg city lab welcome to the program. Thanks for having me. It's not just me, right? I mean, public toilets have been disappearing in this country for a good long while. Absolutely. It was something that I think came to our attention a bit more during the pandemic, especially the early days, but really we haven't seen the construction of new public restrooms genuinely public restrooms. That is, so not restrooms that are in retail establishments or theaters or hotels or bars or restaurants, but actual facilities built by and maintained by either the city or the state. But yeah, the last major wave of those that were built was in the 1950s during the expansion of the highways. And they were rest stops. Between the 60s and 80s, you saw a lot of closures for money reasons because of concerns about crime or vandalism or drug use. And 9 11 really was the final nail in the coffin for a lot of the remaining public restrooms. And a lot have been closed since. It's that genuinely public thing that made me want to talk to you because the way America goes to the bathroom in public is actually through businesses, increasingly less so, right? But businesses making their restrooms available. And those aren't really public bathrooms at all. Exactly. Yes, it's just what we've come to expect. And prior to the early 20th century, there was this idea that the government should provide these types of facilities, then you get into the earlier 20th century and a lot of the progressives which were a lot were wealthy, upper middle class, white women. They decided that there were bathrooms, great, but what was better were bathrooms than other people couldn't use. And the idea was if you had the money to spend in these places, then you could use a nicer restroom. And that idea has really stuck with us. We are different than other countries. In this regard. Yes, absolutely. And it's something that other countries have noticed, whether it's a group of visitors, I live in New York and in the before times they were a tourist everywhere. And one of the questions I got asked pretty frequently was where's the nearest public restroom? And I would have to give them a rundown of the big Macy's is there. If you go to the basement, you can find that type of thing. But another thing that happened was the United Nations sent a representative to the United States to assess the sanitation and drinking water situation. And the report that resulted basically said that the representative was shocked to find so few genuinely public restrooms here. So do you now after writing this piece do you have like encyclopedic knowledge of all the public but really actually private and non municipal restrooms in New York City? Well, that was something that I started paying attention to. Long before I started researching toilets, but I also use an app called flush. And I have no affiliation with them. They're not for everything. There is. This is not a paid endorsement. It just New Yorker with a bladder. Yeah, but if I happen to come across one that's especially nice, I will make a mental note of that. Oh boy. Elizabeth yuko. Journalist writing most recently in Bloomberg and.

Okay, for this next story first, a little context on something you might have noticed about the backlog at the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach and reporting on it. Reports that the number of container ships stuck in anchor is down quite a bit in the past couple of weeks. That is true kinda. There are fewer ships right at the ports, but what happened is that the people in charge of traffic management at those ports are asking those ships to slow down their arrival at the actual breakwater. So the ships are still stuck. They are just strung out farther out in the Pacific. And that's happening in part because of this story we're about to tell you. For decades now, communities near ports in California have had to deal with higher levels of pollution and the diseases that brings. And now with more diesel trucks in line to load or unload those containers and those ships at anchor or nearby, the air quality is even worse. Marketplaces have made a feature has the story. If you think about how a port works, it's sort of like a pair of lungs. Imports in, exports out. And the community next door also has to breathe. That ship that's coming in is bringing in the goods is a mini pollution. That truck that's going by my apartment is a mini pollution. Chris Chavez lives just a few blocks away from the port of Long Beach and works for the nonprofit coalition for clean air. He says, since port slowdowns. There is a huge spike in pollution. A spike roughly equal to emissions from 5.8 million passenger cars. The increase is partly driven by online shopping. 40% of container imports come through LA and Long Beach. Treadmills and kitchen gadgets and yoga pants and plastic toy cars that Americans have been ordering since the start of the pandemic are probably getting to the U.S. on a ship that docks here. Just that simple click of ordering something may have an impact on somebody else's funds. From a boat in the bay of San Diego, port commissioner chair Michael zuckert points to a massive beige ship with the Dole logo painted on the side. They bring bananas pineapple fruit, vegetables, salad bags. He says, every dull banana sold west of Denver comes through this port. So do many of the new cars, Americans buy. San Diego hasn't been backed up like the LA and Long Beach ports, but it is busier. And for years, port and other local transportation has contributed to the terrible air quality here. Up and down the California coast Duquette says, the path of the U.S. supply chain cuts through low income and communities of color. So the port side communities are objectively some of the sickest communities in California. A number of sources show that cancer, heart disease, and asthma rates are very high here. Particularly asthma and children. All those ailments are associated with high concentrations of diesel particulate pollution. So this year, the port of San Diego set a goal to have all trucks and heavy duty equipment at its terminals, be zero emission by 2030. That's a more aggressive timeline than the state of California requires. So kett says he knows it'll be hard for companies that use the port. Some are fearful about how this will impact their ability to do business. But he says something needs to change. Elizabeth Chavez Carrasco moved to the port side barrio Logan neighborhood, 11 years ago. She's now a junior in college. So when I was younger, I didn't know that it was a prom, but on field trips, she noticed other neighborhoods didn't have this kind of noise and traffic. From where she sits on a park bench, there's a freeway in front of her and a major bridge overhead. Like they didn't have these hazard zones like right next to residential homes or they had more green spaces. She says the area was a vibrant working class neighborhood before industry moved in and traffic corridors were built. And it's not a coincidence that it is happening in a predominantly Hispanic and low income community. There's a term for this, says Diane tac foran with the environmental health coalition, environmental racism. She says, it's been happening here since after World War II. Homes were discarded, homes were mowed down so that industries could be billed. And the shipyards and the military moved in. She says, if the pork can reach its goal of no emissions trucks, that'll be huge. But that's years away. Meanwhile, many California ports are still moving record numbers of goods..

"From the international energy agency today, this item Planet Earth is on pace to add a record amount of renewable energy capacity this year, especially in wind and solar, and within the next 5 years, the IEA figures we're going to have the capacity to generate as much electricity through renewables as we will with fossil fuels and nuclear energy combined. But as marketplaces Samantha field points out, just because we can generate green power, doesn't mean we're done. When we're talking about energy, capacity means how much electricity a wind turbine or a solar panel would generate. If it were operating at its peak, a 100% of the time. But no technology works 100% of the time. Even for gas call and nuclear power plants. Amy Bihar is with the international energy agency and is the lead author of the report. So, obviously, renewables are dependent upon weather conditions, especially solar pan onshore wind. Onshore wind, he says tends to generate electricity about a third of the time, and solar, a quarter or less. Capacity is still a really important metric to understand how much we're installing. Melissa lot is at the center on global energy policy at Columbia University. But then we do need to ensure that we're understanding how much of the time it's going to be running. The capacity that's been added this year also led to a record amount of renewable energy being generated according to the IEA. But the pace of expansion would have to double for the world to reach net zero emissions by 2050. And in the U.S. if we're going to have that much new capacity of wind and solar, those resources are typically further away from population centers where the electricity gets used. Eric Larson at Princeton's andlinger center for energy in the environment says that will require new long transmission lines to get that power where it needs to go. And building transmission has historically been difficult in the U.S...

"In Los Angeles, I'm kind of resolved. It is the 1st of December today. It's a Wednesday that is always to have you along. Everybody. Even though we know it was coming, it is still a little jarring, right? To know acron is here as we learned today. And even though we knew it was coming, it's still been a little jarring to hear as we did yesterday and today to hear Jay Powell talking about the fed easing off its support for this economy. So we decided that this would be an opportune time given the current state of affairs for marketplace Mitchell Hartman to read the tea leaves for us and figure out what else might be coming. So a new possibly more virulent COVID variant, omicron, spreading worldwide, could it worsen already messed up supply chains and soaring inflation? I put the question to David Wilcox at the Peterson institute for international economics, and job Bruce Willis at consulting firm RSM. Well, there's more that we don't know than we do know. Right now there are not enough knowns in too many unknowns surrounding all the crime and the global and domestic economic outlook. And there you have it. I'm Mitchell Hartman for marketplace. Not really. I still have about a minute, so let's get into some what ifs. If oma cron causes another serious wave of global infection, it could discourage consumer spending and job creation, businesses would make and ship less stuff use less energy, supply chain bottlenecks would ease and inflation would slow. Much more likely though, is the opposite effect. Inflation is likely to go up because the supply chain is likely again to be adversely affected. That's Joel Hyatt, CEO of globality, a supply chain technology firm in Silicon Valley. People have trouble getting to work through lockdowns in one have you and labor get scarcer, particularly for those jobs where being president work matters, supply goes down and has an upward pressure on pricing. Pretty much the same chain of economic cause and effect, we saw with the last big COVID wave from the delta variant earlier this year. I'm Mitchell Hartman for marketplace. Mitchell Harmon liked the give me a heart attack with that fake ending. Should have seen my face. Mitchell, you should see my face. All right, moving on. There is a generational aspect to what's going on in this economy right now. Specifically, as The New York Times pointed out the other day, a whole generation millennials by name with increasing economic clout and that has experienced a whole lot of financial ups and downs, graduating into the teeth of the Great Recession and now pandemic, also though a generation which has, until now, never experienced inflation. So we had one of our millennials, marketplaces, Kristen Schwab, make some calls today. I talked to some fellow millennials today, and many of them said something like this. I do feel, I think an existential dread for the rest of my life. Molly bean is 36 and lives in San Diego. She's worried she'll never own a home, so she's been carefully tracking prices. She owns a skin care business and her costs have gone up, so has rent food and gas. I feel as though I'm being squeezed at every angle. Jason Connolly, who's 38 and lives in Columbus, Ohio has noticed prices increasing too, but he has a slightly different take. The cost of everything has always been rising for as long as I can remember. So what's the difference? He's talking about the cost of college. It went up more than 60% between 1995 and 2015 when the majority of millennials were in school. And the average cost of homes, which have gone up 40% in the last two decades. One listener emailed me saying inflation on top of everything else, it feels like death by a thousand paper cuts. Okay, so this can seem a little dramatic, but cliff rob, who teaches consumer science at the university of Wisconsin Madison, says millennials have met economic woes as they've aged into life's milestones. Like when they entered the job market around the Great Recession. That creates a lot of problems for the big steps that are anticipated as people age from their 20s into their 30s and their 40s when you think about goals of family formation and relationship building. But he says millennials might be better equipped to deal with inflation. They have a little more wage power and job fluidity compared to older workers or people on fixed incomes. Maybe that means millennials don't need to give up avocado toast. I'm Kristen Schwab for marketplace. On Wall Street today from the intraday high to the closing low a thousand point swing on the Dow Jones Industrial Average. I'm a pal volatility, oh my..

"Synthesizer music and a mass choir saying from her television speakers. It had to be your fiftieth time seeing the ad but it still entranced her. Just like the first karen. Un here her best friend. Reggie had a key to replace and no problem letting himself in. I'm coming into your bedroom. Don't be naked. He stuck his head in visibly relieved that she was indeed clothed and pajamas. His attention shifted to the screen. Is this it where karen pointed to the right of the screen as the video cut to a group of four three men one woman. That's her and blue. You look alike. She glared and turned up. The volume cumby enlightened at this four day celebration in conference at the grand opening of the new heavenly duty worship center. Horace sinclair invites you to change your life for now and forever bishop horace sinclair spiritual leader to thousands. Perhaps millions when you counted as television ministry. That's who the ad campaign was really for sinclair's power and purpose conference had been in the works for the last two years set to coincide with the grand opening of his new worship hall heavenly duty. It was a fifty million dollar mega church designed to hold a congregation of thirty thousand in the spiritual community. It was the biggest of big deals. All of the celebrities of gospel ministry and evangelism would be in attendance. Plus a crowd of eager worshippers could rival a super bowl audience including cairns enraptured mother. Her mom had been a loyal follower of the good bishop for most of karen's life from his original services in high school gyms to his first church in the suburbs of portside virginia. To now jessica. Manning was a servant to god i and horace sinclair second over the year. She established a place in the good bishops inner circle thus her prominent appearance in the power and purpose adds her access to church resources and the bishop himself had many of the other church members particularly the women dipping into the envy bucket of the seven deadly all despite having a daughter like karen. The ad ended with ticket and contact information. Though karen was willing to wager. There were no more tickets. It was long rumored the conference would sell out wasn't like there was much time left. It started tomorrow. She clicked the television off and turn to reggie will he asked. She raised an eyebrow. Well what are you going. Her gaze flitted to the two tickets wedged into the molding over her mere front row seats gift. For mom she shrugged. I think you should. He said i know what you think. It's easy for you to think that you didn't grow up with her. She searched for a word. Powerful enough to construe the years of degradation. She suffered at her mother's hands rants. She threw more scriptures in my face than those crazy apocalypse. Guys on the corners. Downtown things could be different now. I've seen bishop sinclair on. Tv and he focuses strongly on forgiveness. Maybe your mom has forgiven me. Her voice was hot venom. What exactly is she. Forgiving me four. Reggie he raised his hands. One palm out the other grasping a large padded manila envelope. It will never be said that reggie the wise does not know when to shut up. Karen angry at reggie for going where she didn't want to go but equally mad at herself for being angry at reggie hopped off the bed and disappeared into our walk in closet. It was easier to cool off when she couldn't see anyone when she couldn't feel the waves of emotion. Wafting off of them. She tugged the days. Close off hangers. What's that envelope you're holding. Don't know i grabbed your mail on the way up. Open it as she sifted through her denim. She heard the envelope rip. Then speak of the reggie caught himself and then finished. It's from your mom. She found him holding a leather bound. Bible and sheet of paper. Her note says god told me to send you this figures he cracked the bible's cover chuckled. What she asked. It's autographed by horace sinclair. The guy autographed bibles. The cynic in her nearly overloaded. Let me see. Reggie tossed it tour immediately. Took a turn for the worst. She felt the warmth immediately. The heat spread from her hands of her arms hit her chest and went supernova through the rest of her body. Reggie in her. Bedroom blinked away. There were people too many people. The aisles are choked. Some rush to the exits and others rushed the stage. There is already a crowd there though they huddle over someone she cannot see she can see. The blood drips over the edge of the stage. There's crying so much crying in the huddle. She sees her own face. Crows feet clutch the corners of her eyes and her mascara smeared. Karen doesn't wear makeup and she's yet to develop her first wrinkle. This is her mother's face horrified behind mom a banner of ten foot tall letters read power and purpose a sloppy bright red splatter fills the oh and power as if painted by child who hasn't yet learned to color inside the lines all becomes quiet the crowd at the stage including her mother turned to her and stare with pleading eyes she looks past them to what they conceal before a man with a ragged hole in his chest lies motionless gone from this world. Chorus sinclair the bible smack floor. Karen leapt backward banging her head against the closet door. She went lent in slid to her but her legs felt like cooked spaghetti and her breathing was ragged. Reggie knelt over her but did not touch not yet. What did you see. Someone's going to the images. Were still fresh in her mind. Still shocking ones going to kill horse and claire adrenaline flow through her. She sprang to her feet and sprinted around reggie in search of her cell had to call mom and her wake she heard reggie say why is it. Never the winning lotto numbers. The first time it happened she was eleven years old. They've been visiting her grandparents and in a small close knit community. Where most folks knew jessica manning and her precious little daughter. Karen it happens in the market when jessica bumped into an old friend from high school and began to chew the man's ear about her new church heavenly duty. Her is glossed over before he politely excused himself claiming a forgotten appointment. It was good to see you again. Jessica he shook moms hand then turned to karen you too little bear. He patted her head and she cringed not from the odd nickname but from the pictures flashing suddenly through her mind. She saw the man on a ladder trimming branches on a tree. An electrical line was tight rope through the foliage. He did not notice the wire until his trimmers into it and then it was too late. The man quickstep to the checkout line. "The european space agency's module columbus joined the iss. Now this was originally intended to be part of space station freedom more than a decade earlier. You know back when that was still a thing. Columbus launched aboard the space shuttle. Atlantis on february seventh. Two thousand eight. It is seven meters long twenty three feet and it's four and a half meters diameter or fifteen feet and they can hold up to ten. Isp ours for science experiments and then more for various systems the esa technically has fifty one percent operational control of columbus. Nasa has the rest of it that means that the two agencies actually split these racks between them so Usa as control of five racks for experiments and nasa has control of the other five and that they just share the space cohabitate like destiny. The activities on columbus are geared towards scientific experiments and expanding our knowledge particularly when it comes to space exploration columbus docked with the starboard port of harmony on february eleventh. Two thousand and eight so again that means if you were in the harmony module and you're right side up which is again a week distinction here in space and you have the destiny module behind you. That's to your raft. You're facing forward. That would mean that columbus would be on your right hand side. You need to go through the hatch on the right to get to the columbus module again. All these directions get pretty loosey-goosey when you start to lose reference points like up and down so your mileage may vary. I guess next up shortly. After columbus came the japanese experiment module or kibo. Now kibo is really big module. It's so big that it required three separate shuttle missions to bring all the major pieces of the module up to the iss like columbus kibo connected to harmony on the port portside south. The left side of harmony got destiny behind you. And you're right sign up and it has twenty three. Isp ours aboard it those racks. There's enormous experiment racks. Ten of those are reserved for science. The rest are for kibo systems and crew storage. Kibo has its own robotic arm. It also has its own communication system A hosts a ton of different science experiments and that includes stuff like earth science experiments that monitor. The co two content of the atmosphere of our planet has x ray astronomy experiments Electronic telescopes cosmic ray experiments. Lots of really super cool stuff. It also hosts various physics and biology experiments. and then there's an exposed facility. This is a part of the kibo module that attached to the far end of it This is a science platform. That's exposed to space for those kinds of experiments. You know the kind where there ain't no air out there It's a little tricky to talk about the size of key bill because of all these different pieces that came together..

"Well griff yeah. Oh me anything about ship to ship combat in this in this world. Sure i mean you take turns. It's a lot like sorta sword combat but with cannons and stuff instead. Are you asking like you rolling out speed as you're like okay. I'm looking at this boat. Like how nasty is. That's that's the question. Are you calling them right. Let's say that. I'm calling them roll aged. Let's see aural perception check or an investigation. Check either one. I got a little bit better. Perceptions got eighteen. oh that's great So this ship you can see is a little bit beat up it is. It is well armed you can see but also you can also see. It's only armed on the portside. So with some clever maneuvering you can find edge battle there but moreover like it got bashed up in whatever sort of scuffle it got into with you assume this other destroyed ship that is sort of nearby so you feel pretty confident that despite appearances this thing is not cutting quite as imposing. Silhouette is as you. I thought would make an extensive to go kind of scout. I think that at this point where like they're watching us right and we are approaching and they said and in fact it's been a while yes my new friends again. Do you want me to want to talk now. Go ahead but i say we make proposal. Okay go florida you okay yes hello hi. I'm so sorry. Y'all haven't started turnaround yet just wondering if there's going to be problem well i would like to say we have to yourself into my name is devora lemon and we have double dibs own. That's a real good Rate not leave. We will be forced to blow you out of the water. How how la just hold on one second down this. I know i know that's great. That's are you sure okay. You shouldn't have to say okay triple. Dmz be ready with dibs infinity. Okay okay i'll all right fine. Why don't we split it. Why don't we split it. And then that way. We don't even have to worry about dibs. That seems reasonable. All right come on over in park on a long art cider. Portside and we'll yeah that's perfect. We'll park on your starve and It'll be real nice. We got some valuable cargo in here real valuable and we wouldn't wanna get rattled so we'll we'll be you don't have to worry about us. Getting clever kappa. Yep that sounds equitable and you see the just out of the corner of your eye. You see the canons start to move around. And guthrie says other they're aiming they're they're aiming at us. guess. Obviously i ain't gonna let's Let's roll initiative now. How to turn. Sa- is this a shared initiative to know everybody's going to roll initiative initiative Fifteen for me eighteen for me eighteen. Okay nice so here is how ship combat works. It's time for a tutorial At the taj do like i do with every judicial in this of zone house national. I'm going to hammer the x. By skip through all this journey at the top of each round of ship combat. The very first thing that happens is the pilots of the two ships role for position. Position is essentially a buff. That one of the two ships will will have in combat. When your ship is in position it is in an advantageous position. You will be able to use certain weapons that will only be able to fire when your ship is in the right position to fire them Your pilot can take on cooler maneuvers when your ship is in position that will further benefit the ship if your ship is not in position. That's a bad thing and the way that we rectify that is that the pilots of both ships at the top of the turn role a speed role. So you're going to roll plus six. Which is the dreams of deborah's speed role and i will roll for this pirate bartsch. I got at ten plus six sixteen. Kate which is admittedly of the best i could do out of fifty percent fifty percent That was very good. I got a ten and so the dreams of deborah is in position Now the pilots act next the pilot that one the position role gets to go first now on the pilots. turn travis. A pilot can execute a gambit that is a special sort of maneuver that pilots of these ships can take and each of these gambits have different sort of benefits that they provide for the rest of the ship Some of them can only be used while in position. Some of them can be attempted whenever some of them are risky. And if you fail them they could damage the ship's engines or put you in a bad position for the next round So just as a few examples you can ready fire. That can be your gambit and once you've ready fire you can grant advantage to a single ship attack. Roll this round. You can broadside so bring the sort of stronger sight of your ship around and take fire there and gained plus two. Ac against attacks to your ship this round There is a list of actions here that you can see And.

"The tax were witnessed going into the water And the the folks. We spoke to down there. See these all the time It's a very interesting situation down there. But what we encountered that week was unlike anything we had ever seen before Towards the end of the exercise after the night that the pilots returned with a gun camera footage before we had seen it on board princeton. I was out on the portside bridge wing with the the port. Watch or you had to watch At approximately forty five degrees up in the sky two thousand two thousand feet off the port bow. I saw five to seven lights. In a completely clear and cloudless sky those about ten o'clock at night these five to seven light all moved towards the center of the circle of the or the center of their formation that they ran in each instantaneously disappeared. I say that they blinked out but they didn't show any kind of movement of propulsion. This action completely matched what we were seeing on radar and completely matched with the pilots. Returned with On the gun camera footage the next morning when myself and the chief petty officers and the chiefs enough witness that that video we were astonished. We knew immediately what we were looking at. We had the chain of emails that came with it where the operations officers on the ships were. Were immediately debunking everything we know what birds look like we know what Balloons look like we know what other aircraft look like. You know what the lighting configurations are. These things did stuff that we just can't do and we had the electrical optical data the eyewitness testimony and the infrared data to to tell us about it not to mention the radar data. Okay standby for just second. We're going to take a one minute break and then be back on this. I have some follow questions. Just on that I let me tell you about norman.
