The Breakdown
A highlight from Visa Goes Deeper on Stablecoin Settlement
"Welcome back to The Breakdown with me, NLW. It's a daily podcast on macro, Bitcoin, and the big picture power shifts remaking our world. What's going on, guys? It is Wednesday, September 6th, and today we're talking about big news from Visa. Before we get into that, however, if you are enjoying The Breakdown, please go subscribe to it, give it a rating, give it a review, or if you want to dive deeper into the conversation, come join us on the Breakers Discord. You can find a link in the show notes or go to bit .ly slash breakdown pod. So yesterday's episode started with a very brief discussion of a nominally big thing for Solana that didn't push the price at all. What we're going to do today is talk about that thing, which is much bigger than just Solana, and also talk about what it says about the general state of the cycle that we're in. The specific news was that Visa has announced an expansion of their stablecoin settlement to include the Solana network. Visa will now settle some cross -border payments using USDC on Solana. The payments company began experimenting with USDC for treasury operations in 2021. The pilot began with Crypto .com's crypto -linked Visa cards issued in Australia. Visa set up a cross -border settlement channel with Crypto .com, which allowed the exchange to finalize customer purchases using USDC over Ethereum. The expansion of the USDC settlement pilot is being done in collaboration with merchant acquirers WorldPay and Nuvei. This will allow merchant customers to select USDC stablecoin settlement as an option instead of receiving fiat currencies. Now the upgrade to Visa's systems is entirely a back -end improvement, and it's designed to cut settlement times and costs. In a statement, they explained that at the moment, quote, But what they don't see is that the funds used for their purchases need to move between their bank, the issuer, and the merchant's bank, the acquirer. This is where Visa's treasury and settlement systems enable the clearing, settlement, and movement of billions in transactions a day, making sure the correct amount in the preferred currency is received from the issuer and sent to the acquirer, end quote. Now currently cross -border card payments rely on the SWIFT system, which can take several days to finalize. By switching to crypto rails, merchants can receive cleared payments much faster, which is obviously a huge boon when it comes to cash flow management. Visa head of crypto Kai Sheffield said in a Twitter thread, WorldPay and Nuvei enable card acceptance for a diverse set of merchants across the world, including a growing number of merchants interacting with the blockchain and crypto economy who may prefer to use USDC within their corporate treasuries over traditional fiat banking. Visa can now settle these payments to WorldPay and USDC, enabling WorldPay to more flexibly manage their own treasury infrastructure and route the USDC directly to their merchants with less worry about wire cutoff times and bank holidays. It's still early days, but Visa has already settled millions of dollars of USDC over the Ethereum and Solana blockchains between our clients. We are committed to continuing to innovate around how we move money and provide our clients modern options for settlement, end quote. Circle CEO Jeremy Allaire noted that the paradigm shift enabled by using USDC as a settlement currency and not just a payments currency. Also on Twitter, he wrote, One of the things that I am most excited about regarding this new expanded use of USDC by Visa is the fact that USDC is being used as a core settlement layer within the Visa network, a more real -time, global alternative to traversing SWIFT and various ACH rails. More often than not, everyone focuses on the purely retail uses like the Shopify USDC plugin. When in reality, USDC is a generic digital dollar protocol that spans from retail to wholesale across commerce and finance. Our existing mental models for payment systems are dated. An internet -native digital dollar and stablecoin network protocol scales from tiny micropayments in P2P transactions to multi -hundred million dollar capital market transactions, end quote. Now, while Visa has been experimenting with faster USDC settlement on the card issuer side of the business for some time, this pilot extends that functionality over to the merchant settlement side. Now, to bulls, this move seems like a significant step forward in the adoption of crypto networks as a global public and neutral end -to -end value transfer system. Visa currently settles $11 .6 trillion in global payments annually and this settlement use case is precisely what research firm Bernstein envisioned when they made their call in August that stablecoins could become a $2 .8 trillion market over the next five years. So in terms of community reactions, obviously for the Solana bulls, this was a huge deal. Anatoly Yakovenko, the founder at Solana Labs said, I want Solana to be so cheap that it saves Visa money to use it over its own in -house infrastructure. And I want Solana to be so fast that it improves the user experience as well. Lily Lu, president of the Solana Foundation said, We've had a long -standing thesis around payments being only possible on Solana. Fifteen years into the conception of cryptocurrencies and the gradual progression of this use case from forum post to proof of concept to DeFi adoption, Solana meets users where they are today. Click a button, something happens immediately and with infinitesimal cost. This is going to be demonstrated at scale with Visa building on Solana. Now, others focused on the significance from the Visa side of things. Terry Angelos, who formerly worked on crypto at Visa said, Visa is an authorization network and not a payment network. Merchants pay for real -time authorization, security and guaranteed payment. Settlement post -transaction is when Visa moves dollars from issuers to merchants and that can happen on Wires, ACH and now crypto rails. Nick Carter writes, This is a huge deal. Writing on the wall, stables would become de facto interbank settlement solution via card networks. Even my non -crypto fintech friends are fired up about this. This is one of the most important news items of the year. Caitlin Long puts it even more catchily saying, Visa debanks the banks by going around them to settle US dollar payments outside the US banking system and outside traditional USD payment rails. Pilot programs for now, but… Dennis Porter, the CEO of the Satoshi Action Fund wrote, Bitcoin -only people will hate this but it needs to be said. Stablecoins will play an important role in the next wave of financial technology. The dollar isn't going anywhere anytime soon. In fact, stables will strengthen the dollar. Banks will adopt quickly. Now I could and maybe will at some point do an entire show about why Bitcoin and stablecoins aren't at least in the short term competitive. One offers an improvement on the system that exists. The other offers an opt -out of the system as it exists. In other words, they are far from incompatible. Finally, Mert, the CEO at Helios Labs says, The Visa news today isn't just good for Solana, it's awesome news for all of crypto. Slowly the Overton window is shifting and more financial activity is moving on chain. So this must have caused a huge price run up, right? I mean, this is big news. Nick Carter called it one of the biggest pieces of news of the year. Alas, Solana was up just 2%. Crypto trader Gumshoe wrote, In a bull market, Solana would have jumped over 100 % with all the crazy news of the past two weeks lol. The other news that he's referring to was Solana Pay integrating with Shopify two weeks ago. Trader Horse writes, The sole response is a good indication of the current market environment. Imagine what this post would lead to during any other point. Instead, price is listless. This is not a supply issue. We just don't have any buyers. The news should excite long -term investors, however. Teams that are still grinding in the bear get rewarded in the bull. Now I weighed in on this yesterday as well, tweeting, People looking for prices to move up on good news right now are totally missing the part of the cycle we're in. Until new buyers come in, it's sideways or down only. Doesn't mean good news isn't still good. It's just not going to show up in price. Now in the particular case of Solana, there is a general and specific context. The general is what we just talked about and where we are in the cycle. The specific is that Solana is dealing with the overhang of the FTX estate having $1 .1 billion worth of Solana in their coffers right now. That's something like 13 % of the total supply. Reinforcing the contrast between news and energy, even as all this was happening, Solana's daily active addresses fell to around 204 ,000 at the end of August. That's the lowest level for the metric since the block began tracking it in late 2020. Rebecca Stevens, data analyst at The Block Research, put the reasons pretty crisply saying, The Solana ecosystem was already seeing a decline in active users prior to the collapse of FTX, but the fact that the blockchain had such strong ties to the exchange and Alameda Research hurt its reputation a bit. The SEC alleging that Sol is a security also hurt the token's price and has caused it to be delisted in the U .S. on several platforms like eToro and Robinhood. Now overall, the block's monthly exchange volume measurement hit its lowest point so far during this cycle in August. Just $423 billion in volume was moved through centralized exchanges last month, falling below other recent low points in May and December. The lack of trading on exchanges was punctuated by Binance falling below $200 billion in monthly volume for the first time since November 2020. Now this lack of activity extends to Bitcoin as well. Dylan LeClair tweeted, As a percentage of circulating supply, Bitcoin moved in the last 30 days is at an all -time low of 5 .4%. Meanwhile, spot volumes are at levels not seen since 2019. Saying this market is thin currently is an understatement. Reflexivity Research co -founder Will Clemente writes, Crypto aggregated trading volume is the lowest that it's been since 2020. Google's search trends for Bitcoin and crypto at multi -year lows. Realized volatility, implied volatility, weekly Bollinger Bands, all near record lows. This is exactly what apathy looks like. Now Kaleo pointed out that although this is brutal, it's not necessarily out of sync with the cycle. He wrote, Centralized exchange volumes haven't been this low since December 2020. Daily average volume is down from $164 billion at peak to around $13 billion now, a 92 % decline. For reference, the peak in the 2017 bull market was around $28 billion, with an average of $2 .5 billion per day six months prior to the 2020 halving, a 91 % decline. So after all of the centralized exchange trauma we've seen over the past year, we're still in line with a similar trend to what we saw last cycle, despite how rough it may feel. Still, I think it's worth noting comments from Kobe given during the height of the bull market. On the Up Only show, he said quote, You need to have the same level of interest when everything is really boring. The main way you have to make it is to try to perpetuate your interest through the boring bit. The boring bit is where the opportunity is. Now of course, one of the things that people anticipate could bring some new blood in is that fabled Bitcoin spot ETF. So an update on that front as well. After winning a comprehensive victory in court last week, lawyers for Grayscale have written to the SEC to ask them to get moving. According to Grayscale, the court ruling was so comprehensive that the SEC has quote no grounds for treating the Grayscale Bitcoin trust differently to Bitcoin futures ETFs. They wrote quote, Now the letter anticipates a change in tactics from the SEC who may choose to introduce new reasons to prevent Grayscale from converting GBTC into an ETF. The letter stated that quote, Grayscale pressed home the importance of resolving this conversion in a timely manner given the number of rival products clamoring for approval. The letter noted that the SEC may have now exceeded the time allowed to refuse an application, reserving their right to argue in court that the conversion should now be deemed approved. Grayscale argued that quote, Finally, they requested to meet with the SEC as soon as possible to discuss the path forward. James Safart, ETF analyst at Bloomberg said, Now even as the ETF situation works to be resolved, there is clearly some jockeying for positioning as it relates to renewed or new institutional interest in the crypto space. As a for example, Coinbase has launched a new crypto lending service aimed at U .S. institutional clients. The service looks to fill in the gap left by the Genesis and BlockFi bankruptcies. An under -the -radar SEC filing made last week disclosed the program already has $57 million in client funds. According to a person familiar with the service, clients can lend out their crypto assets on an over collateralized basis to Coinbase. The firm can then extend those crypto assets as loans to institutional trading firms. This is essentially the same business as prime brokerage in the traditional finance space. Now, unlike the canceled Coinbase Lend program, retail customers are explicitly excluded from this service. By catering exclusively to accredited and institutional clients, Coinbase is able to offer the service under less onerous regulatory requirements. Honestly, one of the big takeaways is just what a big gap has been left by Genesis in the U .S. institutional environment. However, as you'll hear in an interview coming out later this week or maybe even later today with Hani Rashwan from 21Shares, that institutional interest may be far less gone than it might currently seem. However, that is going to do it for today's episode. I appreciate you listening as always, and until tomorrow, be safe and take care of each other.

Mitchell has big slam, 31 points as Cavs beat Nets 115-109
"Donovan Mitchell scored 31 points to lead the Cavaliers over the nets one 15 to one O 9. Mitchell hit 5 three porters and a fourth quarter highlight reel slam dunk in the cas 46 win, but says it could have been better. You know, we don't win by 6 or 8, whatever it is. It's a one point game. I think it's the entire offensive rebounds. They missed a few of the shots. It was much three tonight. They may make something. You know, and that's ultimately what's the separator. So they don't continue to be consistent with what we do. Care is the word added 18 points. While Darius Garland and Edmund mobley scored 17 apiece, they run sharp, led Brooklyn with 20 points and 11 rebounds off the bench as the nets dropped their four straight game. So, of course, you know, John Molina, you know, so being in the ring with those type of fighters, I didn't seen it on before. You know, Sean might have a little more of this or a little more of that. You know, but it's nothing that I haven't seen before. This is a cross promotional fight, John Porter, affiliate with BBC. You, of course, with top rank. Did you think the day would come when we'd see that happen for you where you get across promotion against the top welterweight? Well, it's not a cross promotion, you know, this is a fairly, you know, one promote promoter promotion R 5. And that's ESPN taught rank. You know, I don't know if those two could have came together, like they did with Deontay Wilder Tyson Fury and I made the fight across promotion. But then that, you know, the WBO has demanded to fight, you know, I think, you know, that was the best thing that could have happened. How did you feel about that Terrence, like the WBO stepping in and mandating that this might happen? Well, at first, I was just like, okay, you know what I mean? I'm wearing whatever, you know, but then, you know, the 60 40 split, you know, I was like, okay, you know what I mean? But I probably got the bad shake of that deal being that, you know, the numbers, you know, don't add up. But it is what it is, you know, we hear now. And, you know, we both making a lot of money. We're going to put on a great show coming November 20 of. Do you feel like or do you hope this is the first of many, maybe you're right, it's not a cross promotion necessarily, but the first of many fights where you fight some of the guys that everybody wants to see you fight. Yeah, for sure. You know, this is the stepping stone. You know, this is what everybody been waiting on. And this is what everybody doesn't call them for. And so have I, you know, I particularly probably haven't been calling for Sean Porter and direct. But all the other guys in the PVC are very colorful and, you know, this is the start of, you know, a bright end of a career. It's been widely reported terrance that this is the last fight of your top ranked contract. What do you think your future is in 2022? Well, my future is bright. Like I always said, you know, I'm not thinking about, you know, too much or anything right now, but how important, you know, he's my top priority, that's on my mind and everything else can wait to other this fight. Do you feel like you can get what you want under your current circumstances? Like I said, you know, this is something that we're going to discuss after the fight. You know, we're going to map everything out and see what's best for terms Crawford. So last question for you. How obnoxious is Beau Mac going to be at the way in for this fight? What are we going to hear from him yelling in the corner at Sean Porter in this fight? I don't know, you know? Is this moment, you know? He's unpredictable. Yeah, awesome. He might not, you know, we gotta watch and see. It's kind of weird watching him yell at Stevenson, given how much he likes shiko Stevenson. That was a weird that was a weird situation there. Hey, you know it is what it is. You know, trying to mail to the best of Jamal ability and, you know, see if you can get that victory. You're a guy that's moved up and wait several times. What did you think of Shakur at one 30? I know you and him are have a good relationship as well. It was nothing that I wasn't telling everybody about Shakur in the past. You know, like I told everybody, you know, he's gonna be the next superstar unboxing. I don't see nobody being right now. I thought he filled out really well. I mean, that happens, of course, it's happened with you as well, but like going up and wait, he looks stronger than he did at one 26. Yeah, for sure, for sure. And he's capable of going up to one 35 and one 40 as well. Yeah, that'd be fun to see a lot of good fights for him at both those weight classes. Starts. Good to talk to you, man. "Porter in this one? You talk about Sean Porter. You're talking about a man that's only lost to champions and by split decision, majority decision. Now khal Brooke, I think it wasn't a close fight, but it was still a competitive fight in those early in his career. Anything or anyone that weighs a 147 pounds shampoo can beat or compete against, including Terence Crawford, who is arguably the best fighter pump for pound in the world. And the reason he'll do it not only because he has that manhandling style, but the switching back and forth from lefty to righty won't throw him off because Sean Porter does that. He does it in a wrestling fashion. Errol Spence said he struggled not struggled, but he called them a Street Fighter. He called them a tough guy in a Street Fighter. That's what you need against a style like butt Crawford. Whenever you have perfection, you beat it by being imperfect. You know, you need imperfection to beat someone that's so just unflawed and clean and mean like bud Crawford, so you need a tough guy a wrestler, a mall or a brawler. You need a champ Porter. I think this is gonna be just another one of these Sean Porter type fights where he will hurt Crawford. He will get his respect. Crawford will probably win, but after the fight Crawford likes Spence will say, man, that was a lot tougher than I thought. This guy is a real deal. And that's why Porter is always excited to watch. I think that's the key, right? Can Porter muck it up in the same way did in the losses to key Thurman to Errol Spence and the same way he did in wins over what Danny Garcia was a big one for him. Can he make it the kind of wrestling match he needs it to be to win this fight? Or is Crawford's so good and so technically proficient that he catches them on one of those rushes? That's how I'm very correctly. And I think as good as Spence is great with the jab uses his size, Crawford faster. And I think Crawford's more explosive with some of these shots. So I think coming in, that's a big risk for Sean poor. He's got to be real careful. He doesn't walk into a bomb. But if he's able to wrestle with Crawford and maybe tire him a little bit, he's gonna be the physically bigger fighter in the ring. He's a career welterweight, basically. And I think he was at middleweight. He has a middleweight Danny Jacobson, it's a big guy. So you don't think. So I think if he's able to do that, he's gonna give himself half a chance. I just think Crawford's so good, man. Like Crawford is so, so talented that as long as he hasn't lost a step that what we saw against the likes of meme machine, where he got dropped, even though it wasn't called. As long as he's at the peak of his power, I think he's going to catch on board something big. I think this fight ends at a stoppage with Crawford winning. Can you really imagine anyone stopping a Mack truck like pulled out? I don't think anyone stops him. I won't 47. No one stops. No one stops at shampoo at one 47, including Crawford's Crawford moving up in weight if you look at them. I moved up and wait what three years ago? And cropper was telling me Trump was not a big guy. He's not the thin, very strong fighter. I mean, I see him in person. Right. And he's more muscular than I thought. It's not the same, but you remember how Crawford won his title against Jeff horne. Jeff horn tried to make it a street fight too, Crawford had any of that. He was battered him around towards the end. Jeff horn is no shit. He's not Trump orders league. I get that. But he tried to make it physical. Jeff horns successfully did that against Manny Pacquiao. That's how he won his title over in Australia. He's been able to do it at a reasonably high level. Crawford wouldn't let him. Crawford's too good. Too great, choose your words right. You don't want great. Okay, butt Crawford is we're watching greatness. I mean, what he does is so hard to do. And he does it so effortlessly. And the way the way they've been letting them be himself, you know, just whatever style he wants from whatever position whatever stands, he's a mean, mean fighter, and he can box and sit back and pick you apart. But Porter makes guys like that. Look human. So shampoo definitely has a chance to mock this up like you would say, but to win, I think that's a little bit out of his reach. We know what Sean Porter is on the lead level with the thurmans and the spences. And this is just another one of those fights. So this is Crawford's last contracted fight with top rank. If you or him, what would you do? I already told you this on jabs on our show. I told you everybody listens to or they should watch it every Tuesday. Well, listen. I'll repeat it. I'm gonna regurgitate exactly what I say on that show. I'm not sure if that's kind of the right word. I'm not sure if that was a word. But I'm going to throw me off. I'm going to repeat what I said on the show. Third time's the charm. Any great fighter, everything all the great fighters in the past 20 years that have made the most amount of money have ventured off from being champions with a promoter to making their own promotional company. Golden boy promotions will also the lawyer Mayweather promotions with Floyd Mayweather. Coda did it in his own fashion as well. I think that's what book Crawford needs to do while Canelo, of course. But promotions, that's what needs to happen when he becomes a free agent. But promotions and association with whatever promoter they're going to work with. And then that's how he makes the money he wants. That's how he still has the control and he still has the finger on the button, and that's how he gets paid and makes that pound for pound money that he's looking for. But promotions. And he's 34 years old. He's at that point where he should be doing that. He should be going fight by fight or no more than a two fight contract. Canelo Álvarez is proof that it works. And before that, Miguel cauda did it successfully in the twilight of his career. A lot of fighters have done it. Not as many as they should. Not there haven't been many successful fighters that are coming to try promoting. No sugary letter actually was trying to promote sugar juniors a promoter, but successfully. Roy Jones junior for a while tied himself to HBO and like, you know, that's basically the same as tying yourself to promote. I think these fighters the top ones should be as free as they could possibly be. You know what young guy's doing it that I love? Boots Ennis. Boot status is not tied to anybody. Smart. And he's fighting regularly on showtime. He's getting paid. He's rising the ranking. So he was going to get a title shot no matter what. Boots and his is if he stays the course on this, is going to put himself in position where he can ping Pong between matchroom, top rank, PBC, wherever those big fights are. I take some balls to do that, Sergio, because there's guaranteed money you're leaving on the table. When you don't sign any great business decision ever made was scary. And that's how you, that's how you maximize the money that's on the table by taking chance to take risks. Any billionaire will tell you that. You need risk and balls. You would know you come from money once again. I don't come from a privilege. 9 months. Well, I don't come from generational Boston generational Boston wealth. Maybe you should have thought about that before you signed a rematch clause with forest, okay? Maybe that's what you thought of. I'm incorporated land snake promotions. That's my corporation bras. No. All right, let's finish with Demetrius and raid against Jason quickly. You heard Sergio at the fighter meeting, Android. He blames everybody for his lack of notable fights. He has been the middleweight champion for over three years now. And he has yet to have a signature fight. His last fight a win over Liam Williams was broadcast in the afternoon on Saturday. This coming to provide against Jay quigley, very good fighter, one loss on his resume coming off the biggest win of his career of Shane Mosley junior, but it's not the marquee fight against Gennady Golovkin against Jamal Charlotte against hybe mongia. "That orange and take it to the shower. And get the shower like steaming hot and the steam and the heat kind of like opens up your pores and your nostrils and your taste buds. Then you get to peeling that orange. And then eating it. It's just such a pure little moment of absolute sensual wonder and joy. First thing in the morning, right when you get up and have to face the day. And then an episode two O two with Lauren pasil, her sour routine is silly and incredible. Okay, this thing that I do every single day since I was 5 years old and I didn't even tell anyone about it until I was 21. It was like a secret I had with myself. But I college shower belly and every single morning, I get it has to be bar soap. You get bar soap and you lather it on your stomach for a long time until there's a layer of soap. It has to be like a true layer. And then I draw in it and I call it my shower belly creations and it makes me really happy and it's like a little ritual I have with myself. What did you draw today? Pizza. And now today I'm going to give you one more nugget of shower advice with an actual nugget. Yeah, my name is Michael Porter junior. I'm gonna be a player I play for the Denver Nuggets. And I go by curious Mike. And one of the first things curious, Mike does in the morning. Cold shower. Well, I start off. It's really hard to do, but it's like, for two reasons. It just, it gets you going for the day. There's a lot of research about cold showers. I would affect, you know, your mental, your happiness, all those things. And then also, like, facing a fear, first thing in the morning, which is like, you know, cold showers. That's tough. So if you can kind of conquer that it kind of sets you up for the day to try to win that day. I love that. So you start hot and then how do you kind of phase into the cold? Yeah, so this kind of couple ways that I'll do it. First, I'll just kind of start with the normal shower. And wash my body, get all that out of the way. And then before I get out, I'll just turn it all the way cold. All the way. It was only a few seconds at first, but now like I can just chill in there and I'll do some breathing in there. But you just all over your body, I do it on the back of my neck, my head, and I'm a whole body and it just awakes you up, bro. When you get out of the shower, you're gonna feel invigorated, ready to go. And so it started off by just a few seconds. Now I kind of work my way up to a couple minutes, or you can do it to where you go hot for like 15 seconds and you turn it all the way cold for 15 seconds and back hot and then cold for like a few cycles and you'll feel really good when you get out. I love that that it becomes a symbol for facing fear. Yeah, yeah, exactly. That's kind of how I do it. Face a fear first thing in the morning and to just get you off to the right start. I wonder if trying all three of these strategies during the same shower is flying too close to the sun and wings of bar soap and orange peels. I'm gonna try it. If you want to hear some more from Michael Porter junior, check out his podcast. It's called curious Mike. I would love to keep adding to the shower strategy archive. 2021 Emmys: Winner Predictions for Outstanding Drama Series
"Let's talk about some of the nights. Toughest categories the emmy for outstanding drama series goes to margin. Which show do you think is going to take it. I hate to be so predictable. But i honestly think the crown i know. Aaron doesn't like it which tells me it's the only thing we've ever really disagreed on show. Well written is so well active. It's so well depicted. You get a sense that you are in one of the most iconic and well known families and what they have gone through so i just think that. They deserve their roses. I'm not gonna say fully dislike it with the full. Stop a man. He just hasn't evolved yet. Let me let me let me. Give you the pallet cleanser. You need less fresh. let's night. I will turn you onto the crowd. I'm gonna make sure that. I took four naps that day. Prior and then i'll be fully energized and ready. And maybe maybe i should do it post pregnancy so i really don't falsely anyway moving on as we're snoozing on the and made stale like handmaid's him when they're up for a nomination they take it home. They sweep in many categories. So i'm just excited that they're back on this platform to again. Really good picks. I'm leaning more towards handmaid's tale because it was so action packed. And i felt like elizabeth. Moss's directing debut was unbelievable. However we love to give a sendoff. We love to give a proper send-off pose this final season. The cast the story lines. What was written on that paper and what came to screen was so unbelievable. Right and it was life imitating art and art imitating life with billy porter storyline. So i think if you weren't oppose fan when you heard it was a final season. I feel like a lot of people got into it and i think they're going to be able to take it and they did already take home. Some creative arts emmys. the word drove. I mean it was to die for. That show was fully entertaining. You went through all the fields with that so don't really anyone's game. Houston Rockets, John Wall Working to Find Trade Deal
"Keith, let's start things off with John wall, a Houston rocket for now. But will not be a Houston rocket into the future. It sounds like he is going to be treatable. The rockets are hoping. They're hoping anyway. Let's get into that. What's going to happen here? The rockets, John wall working together to try to find a trade and he will not play any more games for Houston. Yeah, so this is that working together part is where it's very different from the 76ers and Ben Simmons who are not exactly working together. They're kind of working apart right now. So it sounds like by all accounts John wall has been very good in his time in Houston. He's been somebody that the younger players have really come to rely on for leadership. He's been a great leader for them. In the rockets are looking at insane. Look, we have a ton of guards that we want to play young guards to Kevin Porter junior, jaylen green, Josh Christopher, just adding in the last couple of years. Kyrie Thomas, who we picked up on a late season edition last year and he played quite well for them. So they want to play those guys. They don't necessarily want to play John wall, nor do they want to have John wall get hurt in kind of completely ruined maybe whatever little tiny modicum of trade value he may have left. There's no other way to slice this. It's 91.6 million. That he is owed. It's bad money. There's John wall would probably say at the same thing. Good for John wall for getting him what he did. And this is why you should never criticize a pointer for taking a max contract when it's offered to him. Team, other story we can have there. But at the time this contract was offered, wasn't necessarily as a bad contract. And either he's one of the first class of supermax guys to get it. So yeah, so what they're going to do is they're going to have them come to camp. He sounds like he's going to be there to kind of almost be like a glorified assistant coach. While they continue to try to work on

"Think eighty partners the real salt queen. I mean that was incredible calling out her democratic colleagues for engaging in the per formative social media posts while failing to fight for the very policies that they claim to be in favor of in said social media. Posts i i love the fact that she called that out. I want more of that more of that. It's amazing what was that. That was amazing porter unchain so yeah like this never happens guys if you're new to politics. Democrats never criticize other. Democrats let alone in a personal way. We got open warfare And that's a good thing. It's not a bad thing. It depends on how you do it. And why you do it if you're should strategic about it and you're trying to get enough pressure so that we can actually pass three and a half trillion dollar bill which actually helps america's with childcare family's healthcare climbing all those things that Representative porter laid out. Then that's worth the fight. You're not doing it to vent. You're not doing unproductive way. You're doing an perfectly productive way and so now the genie's out of the bottle. Afc saying go back to primary look. After she won her primary. It was sometimes a little hard to get her to support other primaries. Now they're saying okay. Fine primaries the we're in open warfare and that's good that's good it's an immediate. We'll tell you generally owner that's bad. Oh you just follow whatever. The corporate democrats say otherwise nobody. In this case the democratic position is the three and half trillion bill so katie. Puerto see all the rest of the progressives are the side of the democratic proposed not just the progressive proposal the democratic proposal. So the other democrats. I guess would be disloyal and biggest unity if they fought back against that by the way instantly are members reacting official kofi card rights and katie porter for president. Twenty twenty four. She seems to be the most obvious. Thanks bernie quality candidate and this is getting pretty regular airtime. Look you fight. We appreciate it and it's for good cause and in the right way. That's how you do good politics so you help the american people they noticed the district she represents is orange county california. I mean clearly. She has the ability to appeal to voter. Say both parties Now orange county has become a less read over the years but nonetheless. I mean She's she's clearly speaking to the issues that matter to people regardless of their political affiliation. Because as we've talked about so many times on the show if you look at polling it shows you that whether you're talking about democrats or republicans progressive policies pull incredibly well. People want their lives to improve materially. And the reason why there's so much distrust toward the government and our institutions is because it's been such a long time since they've actually looked out for the Livelihood of americans. So i'm gonna say one last thing about that because politics oba strength. And so she is. She's purple district a lot of the conservative democrats who purple districts ran away from every progressive priority. And then lost. She did not. She stood her ground on medicare for all in a purple district in a reelection where they spent a ton of money against.

"O'clock easter all right Casper taken away all right. Progressives like representative katie porter are pushing back. Corporate clowns in the senate like senator joe manchin who claims that he thinks. We should put a pause on the three point. Five trillion dollar budget reconciliation bill which would include incredibly important provisions including childcare universal pre-k mandatory family leave and an expansion of the medicare program to include things like hearing and vision or vision and dental. I should say now with that. Said katie porter honestly said something during an interview on cable news. That needs to be said moore what is actually motivating or fueling the arguments. Coming from people. Like senator joe manchin. Well let's see what she has to say with. Regard to senator manchin others. Who want to talk about the price tag for this. Let me be clear. Your business person. You get it. You can do math if something costs a then. You have two options. You can negotiate down from a or you can find the money. We have revenue options on the table. There are huge number of corporations that pay zero taxes and by making savvy revenue choices for example using a will corporate profit approach to dealing with those corporations that pay zero we can generate seven hundred billion if we use the corporate minimum tax approach. We're going to generate forty billion right there right there senator mansion right there anyone who's worried about spending we can generate the revenue on. This isn't about three point five trillion. spending it's not even now three point five trillion end spending because we're going to generate the revenue pay for these days. I have the will to do it. The question is does senator mansion or is he more concerned about his corporate donors including large corporations the oil and gas industries the big pharmaceutical industry and others who are getting away with paying nothing under our current tax system. Listen that was a presi for jank uber. So shanks away your american hero katie porter. Okay so look guys. The dams broken this a full scale rebellion in my lifetime. I've been begging progressives. Will you please fight back against corporate democrats and when you do. Can you please point out there. Corporate donors in the entire country would-be hind. You if you did that. Because even republicans go on and like the donors The looks like corruption. It looks like you know. We legalized bribery. Because we did okay. And so. I wouldn't do it. They wouldn't do. They wouldn't do it. And then a new wave came in boccia. Democrats are forty wasn't in. She was in the same class. She's not technically in the squatter. Just democrats provoke cares. She's a world-beater and so as she always comes with facts he comes so well prepared and the other thing is she's so strong steady enrolls actually a bit of a corporate is to say the least. We're showing you other clips that overwhelmingly proves it represented. Puerto came in so strong there. That seventy we'll kind of admire it. So she was sitting there. Okay i mean you get ruled to bob. Her head right ongoing f for corporations and making sure they pay their fair share and et cetera. I mean that was great work by canine. Puerto any guys by the way when they finally did it. Go house fall into the k. k. The cave in the roof. No it's totally fine. I told you like it's okay. You're supposed to challenge. Yes your democratic colleagues. If they're the ones standing in the way of actually getting the bills passed otherwise. We're not gonna get anything done and then this all about ego and not actually helping exactly. There needs to be strong pressure campaign by democrats directed toward the corporate democrats in the senate who are hiring regarding the reconciliation. Bill now I do want to go to one additional portion of the interview that Representative porter had wit stephanie role and in this portion she specifically talking about the need for childcare. And it gives you a sense of just how important it is to pass the reconciliation bill because aside from childcare it includes so many provisions that would just fundamentally and materially improve the lives of americans and their families. Let's check this two separate pieces. The first piece is why should childcare be part of this. Bill is partially addressed. This let me just make a practical point to us that we had the man who have run this country for hundreds of years. The wealthy men herbs wives and others are taken care of childcare so convinced that it was important we would have done something about childcare. Ten twenty thirty forty fifty years ago when other countries debt. So i'm not today. All of a sudden convinced that we have the will to deal with childcare. Put off this issue decade after decade after decade. People tweet my colleagues tweet. A women's payday. Women are falling behind glass ceilings. Guess what childcare is the solution. It's a crisis improved economic productivity in this country. And it's one we have to solve as part of building back better. I.

Okay so you said it before. All of a sudden you're doing was call you. Fortunately all right. Last thing is managed just democrats than other progressives in congress finally starting to fight back in a real way so we mentioned it earlier about how they're pushing back against joe mansion on all this stuff but i wanted add one of the. Afc the other day where she talked about. Hey some of these folks are purposely some of these democratic. Legislators are very blue states and she hinted that they could be just like her race when she defeated crowley in a very blue district. Now talking about primary your democratic colleagues was once the third rail in washington and no one was allowed to touch it and it was nuclear and it was toxic and is scared honestly even the progressives in congress from ever say anything now looks like finally. The dam is broken. And they're saying you wanna play hardball. Joe manchin we can play hard ball and by the way you know all the others that are in those safe blue seats. Let's see how it turns out for you and that's how you win and actually things past to the american people. You don't just ask pretty please. You play hard ball pressure on them so we can get the votes to win. Well one of the progressive lawmakers playing hardball is katie. Quarter and when we come back from the break. "Economy. They can't buy homes. They can't buy goods and services that money ends up going toward paying off their debts for college debts that they shouldn't even have to begin with. Yeah and then. Of course there's the healthcare provision abilities tried to kill and of course. His daughter is robber. Baron healthcare and she's made tens of millions of dollars overcharging. Americans shipping their jobs abroad from west virginia actually and destroying the healthcare system for her own profit so when mansion says hey. I don't want our rank. It's paying off this debt well. His grandkids would literally lose money. If you let his daughter stop robbing us and so he's like don't i want the robbery to continue because i suppose straight to my grandkids and so and is right to point out consistently his conflicts of interest but again in washington viewed as perfectly normal. It's just a matter of who's robbing us like. And then the reporter's treated as normal but not outrageous they don't even cover it. That's the problem. Look honestly the only outlet. I've seen do original reporting on mansions. Conflicts of interest is the intercept ryan. Grim has been killing it on this topic and you know just yesterday. We were covering the fact that mylan pharmaceuticals while heather brush. Mansions daughter was the ceo very intentionally created a monopoly for the epi pen by conspiring with visor to ensure that pfizer didn't come out with a competitor to the epi pen so they can inflict prices even further and share profits with pfizer. People are asking well. Does it really make sense to go after his daughter. Yes yes it does make sense to go after his daughter because when mansion claims that he's against the reconciliation bill because. Oh does doesn't bipartisan support. Or i'm worried about how much money it's going to spend all. It's not really about that. It's about his personal interest about the interests of his own daughter right. Because what does the Budget reconciliation bill include. It includes a provision that allows for medicare to negotiate directly with pharmaceutical companies. Something that his daughter does not want so it is a problem. It is a conflict of interest. And that's the reason why we're talking about it. Don't other publication. that's talked about it by. The way is not investigates. We did a story about inches. Personal wealth being affected By his decisions in congress but the thing about the golden parachute that his daughter got in the last transaction over thirty million dollars and that was so that she would play along and not only keep up the gigantic prices. We're all paying but shifting. Show the jobs in west virginia abroad and wipe out those jobs but sh- but the family gets stinking rich right now. Why do you think they paid her session. China amount on her way out right and so then when you say hey could you not have your family members participate in this robbery. May she goes. Oh you're told me about my daughter. I was using affirmative. These illicit purposes smerch star. I can't believe you made it personal. You made it personal when your family members go out and you protect them the law as they do outrageous things cost the rest of us. Money and our jobs and by the way is an interesting conservatives that loved to pick on hunter biden. Don't say anything about mansions daughter. Because they love the robber barons So they're like oh he's helping us destroy democratic bills and his daughter one of us the elites rob money from average americans. Yes all of a sudden not. Don't touch the family. In fact i love that. You brought that up. Apparently senate minority leader mitch. Mcconnell is praying for cinema and mansion so direct you to a tweet by frank Thaw thorpe from nbc mcconnell on the three point five trillion dollar reconciliation bill. We're down to two. Who are resisting. Joe manchin from west virginia and curzon cinema from arizona. I pray for them every night. I wish them well we give them lots of love who do disgusting and then finally i just want to remind you. All of how mansion has really changed his messaging on the infrastructure. Bill remember the budget reconciliation. Bill includes everything that was stripped out of the infrastructure. Bill so all the human infrastructure components are in the budget reconciliation bill but back in january of this year mentioned claim that he was in favor of this. Kind of spending senator joe. Manchin calls for.

"It's not anything that we need immediately as there's a labor shortage because women don't know what to do about childcare so they literally can't go back to work so anything that we need right now. Because you know. I'm a multimillionaire and a good. I'm totally good. Earn half a million dollars a year from the coal industry. But you know not anything we need right now. Real quick Just to note democratic leadership wants to get these issues resolved by september fifteenth so The next week next two weeks possibly Will really show us. It's going to test the progressives in the house and and how hard they're willing to fight right and so i wanna provide positive reinforcement and luckily we do have some progressives or speaking out. And they're saying no to leave for instance tweeted that three point five trillion dollars. Is the floor okay. She's not going to lower than that and montier. Jones says the idea of a one point five trillion dollar price tag. Being sufficient to accomplish those goals for the people is fanciful but isn't really care about achieving those goals. That's the problem. yes so First couple of comments on that video by mansion he also he's developed a problem with the debt when trump was in office and the republicans are spending drunk sailors on rich people cut taxes cut taxes a couple of trillion dollars. Joe manchin can't find any concern for the debt and nobody in washington again. Nobody ever talks about the media. Talks about it as soon as you're going to do something for the american people all the dead bayport. How would it be. How many times you see the scam. Remember joe manchin. Not a republican. He's technically a democrat running this camp and then he's all my god things we need it for. Of course the military to protect us. We'll send you to be protected from climate change which is devastating. The country floods everywhere. Fires everywhere extreme weather exactly as a scientist predicted. That is a much graver threat then. Some rando taliban dude in a valley in kandahar okay. So it's absurd. It's all of these. Talking points are corporate trash talking points. That just accepted in washington. Because there's nobody intelligent to say. Wait a minute. You're saying something ridiculous. I hey shelley moore capito the republican senator from west virginia. You voted for trump's tax cuts using worried about the debt then and that was two trillion that was handed to the rich. Now you're worried about the debt okay. Don't be ridiculous now on the core. Should this reconciliation bill one. That has all the positive progress priorities and look when you see people publicly negotiating with joe. Manchin the other democrats understand. They're not negotiating with joe manchin showmanship as a proxy for all of their donors so route democrats control the house and the senate and the white house. They can pass anything they want tomorrow. But they're having a negotiation with themselves because it isn't about mansion it's about the donors and that's who he represents and that's why anna started the story with remember he just went to the chamber of commerce literally goes and takes notes from their bosses then comes back and says hey boss says this. He's just an errand boy. He's a sad pathetic errand boy and everybody pumps them up to be something. He isn't let alone the fact that at some point cinemas going to ruin all this but by the way i've seen mentioned this one hundred times throughout the last several decades. I've been covering politics in for as long as he's been in the senate and what he does he push all the way until somebody pushes back and then wants. His bluff is called. He goes okay. Apparently that's the best get and he does the deal. That's right so you know what that means push forward don't give in to him cinemas a different store yes. Cinema seems to almost be aroused by going against what her constituents want. In fact her constituents push back against her she decides to troll them on twitter which blows my mind. I mean it's it's clear to me that she actually doesn't really care about the opinions or the the needs of her own constituents and it's pretty disgusting But back to mansion. I agree with you. I really do. Think that mansion Despite a how vociferous. He is pushing back against the reconciliation bill. He's not unbreakable. And you know when push comes to shove at the end of the day. He is more likely to vote along with democratic priorities. Then not but. I do wanna also talk about the fact that this goes beyond his corporate donors because there are conflicts of interest with mansion. That i'm actually more concerned about than even his donors right. Because he himself is a multimillionaire who's invested in the very industries. That would be impacted by the reconciliation. Bill so i'll give you some examples mansion by the way and his staff have been consistent talks with senate finance chairman ron wyden of oregon a committee where the two powerful democrats have clashed over several key. Provisions central to financing the proposal including on corporate tax hikes according to multiple people familiar with the matter. Now it's true that mansions corporate donors do not want corporate tax hikes. They don't want to pay for the bill. They don't want to pay their fair share of taxes. But neither someone like joe manchin who makes house a million dollars a year which.

"He says That you know I i it's just too much for me. Want one point five trillion max so he also recently during talk before the. Us chamber of commerce wanted to put a halt to the reconciliation bill. Let's take a quick look at that video. I would ask my colleagues all of the senate to hit the button on the three point. Five it to pause button. let's back. Let's see what happened. We've got so much on our plate. We really have an awful lot. I i think that would be the prudent wise thing to do. I know they're going to go nuts right now because it's probably being what i just said is going to all my caucus in washington here. They come. I'm i'm thinking of it from the standpoint of where we are as a nation today that we weren't here a week ago or two weeks ago everything has changed and i don't know what the unknown is. I don't know what the future on this is. I know one thing. I'm going to be prepared for it. I wanna be able to take care of our military that can defend this anywhere in the world. if it's called upon. I wanna make sure. Our economy is still robust. I wanna make sure we're bringing manufacturing back and opportunities don't wanna have debt over our heads where we basically can service the debt that we have all those things are very much concerning to me and with all that hanging in limbo right now shelia tell you the three point five turns a lot of good stuff in those things in there at a certain would light the democrats and republicans can agree on. But it's not anything that we need immediately..

"For the good guys. I will have back. God damn right you will okay. That's a good bad. Not all right so far shaking his head like good music anyways so now a serious stuff for a second on on all these proposals so overall love it He's actually backing up his tough words with actually good strong action. And you know we tell you if it was otherwise but there's there's one portion of it to portions that i wanna mention was a fun theory that i have you know how the other day he kicked off much. People from the military advisory boards the kellyanne conway the sean spicer's and they are all do this. You guys were political appointments by donald trump. there's a new president Shut up and go home right so but when you combine these two actions. I don't think he means this. But i like it anyway. So if you're crazy trump guy there we're gonna give new bug me. Well now. you can't government job. Oh that cleans out the trump people from the government And then hey. All the political appointments. We kind of told you time to go. I don't know if you know this. But he's getting reinstated so even if you're on an advisory board. We no longer need your advice okay. So that kind of flushes at the system a little bit. And i like it a lot. One small caveat on all this really small but some of the rules now apply to medicaid and medicare you gotta get vaccinated and on medicaid. Okay that's the the largest of the american government and we can set the rules for that and oftentimes republicans terrible rules on. Here's democrats sitting. Good rules for your health for medicaid but for medicare that's a lot of that is our money that we contributed to that program. So i kind of i have this philosophical point against that that you're not allowed to touch our medicare money because that's our money even if you're trying to do a program that i'm in favor of like this so i'd be a stickler for that but i'm probably the only one otherwise really great strong work all right. Well we're going to take a break when we come back we've got more news for you including an update on corporate democrats in the senate attempting to block the budget. Reconciliation bill that includes all the human infrastructure provision that restrict out of biden's infrastructure deal. We'll.

"So now we wanted to turn to questions of money and influence and corruption government. It's one of those topics. We used to cover exhaustively back at the start of the trump era when nobody could get enough of that word emoluments but despite the hatch act violations and the self dealing and the promotions of big donors to prominent roles in the government. The entire conversation kind of faded away when joe biden took office this year. Perhaps because these problems of big money foreign money directed at inaugural events directed at campaigns. All felt like maybe it would be less urgent but evidently the urgency is as real today as it's always been this past thursday. The biden administration issued a national security. Study memorandum arguing. That corruption quote makes government less effective and quote attacks. The foundations of democratic institutions in effect biden is asking federal agencies to crack down on corruption quote as part of the core national security interests of the united states for representative katie porter. She represents the forty fifth congressional district in orange county california. This fight to get rid of foreign funds and big money interests in washington. Didn't stop with the twenty twenty election either porter and her great white board of doom has been calling out big pharma big banking big money for years now but she's also been one of the loudest voices in congress demanding ethics reform and congressional oversight as a member of the house oversight and reform committee. She's proposing all these legislative fixes that would prevent corruption and increase transparency. And she wants these fixes to be permanent. I spoke to representative porter last week. At an online event organized by crew that stands for citizens for responsibility and ethics in washington crew. As you probably know has been a leading. Nonprofit watchdog focused on ethics accountability. Getting dark money out of politics. The sound quality here is a tiny bit zoo me. But i just really wanted to share this important conversation with you. So thanks for bearing with us representative porter in is started with the proposition that there's a pair of cliches that more or less us for the past four years of the trump era. One norms aren't laws. We thought they were enforceable but they were always just soft norms. The second was that sometimes even when you have laws they cannot be enforced against people who simply believe that. The law doesn't affect them. So i started out by asking representative porter to set the table about some of the key weaknesses. She had identified in the trump era ethics and accountability systems. The area's where laws and norms utterly failed the american people. Just at the moment. We needed them most so table set for my perspective on this important question about laws norms. Two things here have really been driving factors in this work and then how about doing this work and one is that before. I keep the congress. I was a consumer protection advocate. Professor and i took this big wall of trying to help make sure her. The big banks sign a binding legal agreement promising to change their practices. Actually were doing that in real people's lives and so it always been as Doing that on the ground in some protection really interested in the gap between what we think is the wall or what the law says. And then what's really happening. And i think that dow and the recognition of that gap is real is a lot of really important. Work crew does exist. Is people think there should be a law. What that's legal they say. How can that be. But there are a lot of scouts. And there are lots of different ways to to close those gaps whether it's through straightening arms or creating enforceable happy end of my first year in congress opening emerged on the on oversight and reform and i had gone to congress wanting to financial services committee. I absolutely love serving mayor. Ut giving my work on whole big base accountable but one of the things that i very quickly saw in congress is there is sort of special interest playbook same arguments that bankers may about unintended consequences and over-regulation than you know we shouldn't waiters decide the at all of these things that some arguments i begin to hear from farm industry would get again to hear arguments. I heard trump officials about why they couldn't actually help. People were some of the same arguments. Her from officials in president obama's administration a why they couldn't help people during the foreclosure crisis mostly arguments during the dot. So i asked to join a privilege to be selected to join the committee. On oversight and reform on this is congress's name investigative body. So it's rare. We do a lot of the thinking about where are these gaps The law doesn't say it's illegal but we need to do an investigation to understand what happened and then decided to make a law to address that. And so i really really liked not respect of being able to do that. Investigatory work and say. I'm not saying this is a legal. I'm saying did you do it. And bannon opens up the debate to citizens who care about responsibility and ethics to advocate for watching h. Look i don't want to spend our time to talk all about the things. The president did To put his own personal and political interests ahead of national i think the important takeaway here is the one that your question drags out which is before president from engaged in some conduct. I think a lot of us had a sense of it. That wasn't what presents did use can't do it. That's not a fame you can't campaign rallies of the white house lawn you can't you.

Why don't we just dive in really quick and share a story that you have experienced in life that you feel like would be pertinent to people listening. Okay so i feel like my whole life faithful obstacles and trials and had to overcome and entered the end and it started when i was young. Clear back when i was in fourth grade. We lived on my grandpa's little dairy farm and the little farmhouse we lived in caught on fire and displaced our family. So we had to move and i had to change schools and that was kind of hard for me because i was not outgoing. I was very shy as a little girl. So that definitely a bunch of trials and hardships new for little girl. That was kind of hard for me especially at shy little girl and in high school i was a junior actually was on a day date. That's what they caught even what they call it now. We actually went snowmobiling and on the day. Date might date thought that there was this rabin and looked really cool and had all fresh patterns is like there's no snow mobile tracks down there. That would be kind of fun to go down there and there was some like big power..
