"Would never do that job or something like that. Yeah, there does seem to be this yin and Yang, cosmic balance, full circle, so to speak. Dynamic here, Ryan, where the beer guy and the porta potty guy are two sides of the same coin except no one ever really thanks the porta potty guy. Yeah, they are the least thanked people I'll tell you though that a lot of the first responders, there's a whole there's a whole section of bathrooms and a lot of the cops and ambulance drivers and fire guys that were at the game. We're like, hey, thank you so much. I think they understand. I also think of like those scenes, you know, from like horse races, where like they're hijinks with these porta potties. What are the, what are the common hazards in that way that these guys have to deal with? People treat porta potties just like they treat them so badly. If somebody did in your bathroom, what you just did in that porta potty. I mean, you'd be livid, but people do it. And it's horrifying. And one of the big ones that I just mortified watching was at the Triple Crown races over the years, they have these rows of I don't know, maybe a hundred porta potties 50 back to back and people have begun, it's become like a sad porta potty tradition where they try to run across the entire 50 porta potties, right? Yes. And that is such a bad idea for like 5 different reasons. One is that the top of the porta potty, it's just plastic. And so it can maybe hold a hundred pounds, so you could easily go down through and people do go down through them. At the Triple Crown ones, what happens is when they run people throw things at them, like violently throw beer cans at them and hit them knock them off. I saw one where a guy took one of those plastic fold up chairs and lobbed it and took a guy out and knocked him right off the top of the porta potties and down onto the ground. I mean, it's a horror scene. So all of this has been thinking about what the future Ryan might be like for the porta potti industry because you rely on it, we need it, but it's also been like seemingly pretty unchanged for the last 50 years. I mean, I'm looking at a picture of a porta potty right now at Woodstock from 69 and it doesn't look demonstrably different to what you're describing your Sunday with Ben. To be like. So why hasn't it evolved? What innovations do you see coming to the portable bathroom industry in the near future? I see almost no innovation. There is no one in a lab coat thinking about this, unfortunately. The one expert that I spoke to, she said, you know, this is a fascinating interview 'cause I've never spent any time thinking about the future of porta potties, even though I spend large chunks of every day thinking about the future of bathrooms. And she has been the conferences around the world on all the innovations coming our way in the future of the bathroom. And she said, you know, I just don't think anybody has paid any attention to poor bodies. So I don't see big changes. The picture of the porta potty from Woodstock to now, I mean, there are just very slight differences. If I told you that one of the Woodstock porta potties was out at my kids soccer field, you wouldn't say no, that's from.

"College football fans. After an off season that felt a little more off than usual. Fans will and Dr Pepper invite you to celebrate because college football is back. And so are the fans. Yes, it is the most wonderful time of year again. The season of Saturdays. When rivalries run deep and Nacho cheese dip, runs even deeper. So crack open an ice cold Dr Pepper, warm up your corn hole tossing arm and return to glory with an all new season of fans ville. By Dr Pepper. The one fans deserve. So it is crucial, of course, to have this porta potty infrastructure at any given game day experience, I respect that now more than ever. But I want the numbers on this ride because around the country it feels like there are what, like hundreds, thousands of outdoor events that need porta potties and porta potty people. So how big of an industry is this? It's a monstrous industry. It's about $70 billion a year. And it's expected that it's going to be 5 to 10% growth in the next decade. So it is just going to grow bigger and bigger and bigger. The pandemic played a role, you know, more and more people wanted to do things outdoors and that expect to not change. I mean, outdoor weddings alone are up multiple times over what they were years ago. And so this is a huge business. The next time you are out and about in a park or near a school or at a just walk in the streets, if you look around for porta potties, you will see them. There is one almost around every corner, and there will continue to be. So how did Ben cansdale, your guide into this world, the porta potty guy who was steering you through this? How did he get into this in the first place? Well, he had a pretty good job as an electrician. He was making about $15 an hour and making an okay living, but you know he has a girlfriend. He has a young son and he wanted to look for something that paid a little bit more and so he put his resume out there and he got a call from modern disposal and at first he thought, oh my God, do I really want to be driving garbage trucks or clean and portable bathrooms? Like, do I really want to do that? The pay is really good. It is really good paying job. He jumped almost $10 an hour with all sorts of incentives and bonuses. And so part of that huge industry, it filters down to the workers. These guys make a good living. So, you know, you make this argument in your piece. Ryan, that we can't really have sports without the porta potty. So how important to you are they? What do people not understand about the delicate dynamic here? It's essential. You know, people did not use to go to stadiums and spend all day there and have breakfast lunch and dinner. The first reports of that kind of tailgating and game day experience were in the early 50s and into the 60s. And that's exactly when portable bathrooms began their spike in the United States. And those two things are not unrelated because the early returns on tailgating in 1950 and 1955 with 50, 60, 70,000 people, it was a nightmare scene of people just going to the bathroom in their cars outside their cars looking for Woods sneaking into the stadium early. We could not have the kind of big time sports that we have these days without the evolution of the portable bathroom. And so what I want to understand is like, what is the history of this thing? What's the history of sports and the toilet? Where does this all start? Well, weirdly enough, the first portable toilet was discovered in an ancient Egyptian tomb, sometime around the 14th century, and it was just a wooden stool with a hole in it with a piece of pottery underneath it. And you know, it kind of stayed that way for many, many, many hundreds of years, so the actual first porta potty in the United States. You know, there's not a lot of historians out there with great backgrounds in this, but it's believed to have been around the time during World War II whenever there was shipbuilding happening on the West Coast. And supervisors realized, boy, I got guys ducking off these ships that were building and going on land and going to the bathroom and coming back and losing 20 or 30 minutes every time. And they saw incredible spikes in worker productivity. And so that launched the porta potty into the 21st century. Okay, so when did the porta potty become like the 5th thing for these outdoor events for sports and otherwise that? Yeah, so we've had large gatherings at horse racing events and a lot of football games, even up in the early 1900s through 1950, but it was around 1950 that a confluence of factors popped up where people began to make game days a full day. It just didn't happen before about 1950, but a bunch of things came together. One is one is preservatives in food and the ability to kind of take food and have it all day and put it in a cooler. Another is bigger cars allowed more people to go to games and sort of camp out in their cars. And that's when tailgating culture really began and took off. And along with tailgating, you had to have bathrooms. It's one of the first things people are looking for when they go tailgating, even as far back as 75 years ago. And so that's when facilities and people realize we got to have a porta potty. Well, it provides me of like, you know, giant outdoor music festivals. Yeah. Yeah, that's really, I mean, I write in my story about how Woodstock is the first porta potty. It's like a seismic event in the porta potty history because it was the first gathering where just hundreds of thousands of people showed up. They expected a 100,000 and they ended up with 500,000, which means they had 600 toilets for half a million people. And let me just tell you it did not go well. Did not go well when it came to the bathroom. Think about that. It's 800 people waiting for each bathroom. I mean, it's bonkers. The recommendation these days is that you have about one porta potty for every 50 people, but it's interesting that there's always a caveat about alcohol. If you are serving alcohol, you should drop that by about 20% because people use the bathroom more. So it's about one porta potty for every 40 people or so if you're serving alcohol and this is a shocker, I'm sure Pablo, but at a Buffalo Bill's home game, there is some alcohol. Yeah, Ryan, I have heard that. So on that note in particular, now that we have the history,.

That's what really stinks is that smelly arrogant shot out of there. My first 3D and I was like, you know, how bad could it really be? I mean, I got three kids. I've changed a lot of diapers and I was like, you know, seriously. And so he fired it up and it was so much worse than I could have expected. Have you gotten splashed? Oh my God. "Thomas brian steaming or stem was sentenced to ten years in prison for first and second degree assault. He pleaded guilty. In june of justice is not that swift is it was like. Yeah i did it. Put me behind bars. Whoa wha- oh we're going to wait a few months really think about this three months to sentence this guy who pleaded guilty. I feel like if you plead guilty. Things should be expedited quickly. This guy obviously didn't want to go to trial. Whatever i did it. Just gimme my punishment giving my sentencing so we can get this over with. They can get on with my life. stephen attack. Katy peters in february at christopher's fine foods at shady side road in church ted. The incident was caught on surveillance video. According to investigators. Stephen tried to attack to other people. He was really loaded up enough semen for three or four injections. All right Yes he tried to attack to other people. Before peter's stephen had recently moved from ohio of course of florida of the north and had six prior convictions on his record from one thousand nine hundred eighty six to nineteen ninety six so he took a break you know. He hasn't been in trouble since nineteen ninety-six. It's almost. He went into semen. Retirement had a good ten year. Run from eighty six to ninety six jabbing. People with my judges. And i thought i'd hang up after that but after the craziness of last year. I thought i'd get out of retirement. You know i was cooped up in the house. I go back to stick and people with my semen syringes part-time part-time. That's right. you blame this all on the pandemic being cooped up in the house. What is the corona virus. Not responsible for i. You all right Second story we have for you today. Here's a dumb one. This one comes from new mexico. Oh woman using a porta. Potty and gallup new mexico was locked inside the porta-pottys from outside their me blake said. It was saturday. I went to gallup to sell at the flea market. You know as one does. I don't go there often. She's blake and her mom. We're feeling cook phone to make some sales and everything was going fine until you know she started cramping like yet and this is like not an indoor flea market. It's an outdoor flea market. I guess the only shedders where the porta-pottys sheep popped into one of the potties were quick break and she said my lord. I felt the door tug you now the leverage on the porta potties. It shows if it's red or green and obviously if it's read it means it locked. Blake said she immediately tried to open the door but but couldn't at first. She thought the door was just jammed. She kept tugging kept pulling trying to unjam the door and that didn't work and then she started to freak out and she started yelling. A man came by to help In told her there was a lock on the door. Like a physical luck. I'm guessing someone walked by like a kid or something came by with a lock and lock the door. She was freed using a bolt cutter. Now i understand this is this would be a frustrating only scary event. I think after you call for help someone was there to hear you. And they're like all right. I'm going to help you get out of this. I think some of the panic should subside. Because now people on the outside are aware of your situation. You're gonna get out of the porta-pottys eventually the whole reason. There's a new story is because this woman wants to warn others now about the porta potty she. She's she's considering this a near death situation which is kind of pushing it now. You're just being dramatic. She said my lord.

"I don't know. I got a gross porta potty at my house, for it was like $100 a day. Yes, one is gross for some reason. And, uh And whoever is in charge of Los Angeles, producing tiny rental units for 500,000 Pop will appreciate this. It costs from just over $100,000 to $632,000 a year to staff and rent a toilet, depending on the kind of bathroom and how many hours it's open a day one. Yes, yes, Toilet. Who knows and point lead dollars a day. How could that possibly be the total price tag for the program for toilets set up for Covid relief was $10.5 million. Yeah. FEMA reimbursed 2.5 million of them. Evidently the among the emergencies that FEMA takes care of this. I got to go now. It's an emergency. So from 100,000 to nearly $632,000 a year to staff and rent a toilet. How much staffed you need near toilet? I don't I think that would be kind of off putting I think they mean cleaning it and that sort of thing. So unbelievable Homeless industrial complex. When I was in Moscow, they had the great public toilet situation and they were all pay. I think that's the key to public toilets is you gotta you gotta make them You have to pay a little bit. That doesn't help the bombs. But nothing is going to help with the bomb situation. They don't care. But just for regular people. They'd be able to use the bathroom and it is pretty cheap. I'll be went in there. It was basic. It was all cement floor. It was very clean. It was basically just a hole in the cement. And then I got to believe there is some sort of receptacle underneath that they changed regularly. I see parallels of that in an online gaming where, if a gaming costs even a dollar to get The level of toxicity and like the public general chat room areas is infinitely better than a free to play. It doesn't surprise me have been advocating for years back when I used to go to festivals all the time, the asparagus Festival or the Bratwurst festival, however, The ones that were free were disgusting. If they charged a dollar to get in. It was a whole different world in terms of the crowd. Yeah, isn't that something is sound like a little bit like an elitist by charging a dollar? Yes. Yes. What about poor people? Don't they have rights to eat asparagus in a fair on a stick and listen to a cover band play taking care of business. And eat fried novelties. And finally, our final stop in Seattle. Nobody saw this coming the unintended consequences of rent control an eviction moratoriums. This is actually an editorial by somebody in the property management business. State and local lawmakers are creating a problem that they do not or perhaps refused to understand. And that's the erosion of the single family rental house supply. This editorial actually appeared in the Seattle Times, which gives me hope. That the great city of Seattle may return to at least some measure of sanity. In my more than 10 years of experience. Never have. I seen so many people searching for a new rental house because the one they live and now is being sold. The reality is not that the owners of these rental houses necessarily want to take advantage of the hot sellers market and it is a hot market. No, unfortunately, a sweeping trend among housing providers is that they are selling the rental houses due to policies handed down. From state lawmakers in Seattle City Hall. I should be happy that this is precisely what we said would happen. And anybody who seriously has like 1/7 grade understanding of economics can comprehend this, but They mentioned that especially among lower income families, um at the section eight voucher housing crowd, Um it places strict guidelines on location in bedroom count and in my experience, writes this person. Many voucher holding families are of large enough size that a single family house with three plus bedrooms as the only viable option. Where are these families to turn when such houses are no longer offered as rentals? The typical two bedroom apartment does not work for them, and he goes into some detail. Um, which Seattleites probably recognize of how the utopian desire to make every unfortunate family. Not only give them housing but make it impossible to come to the victim make it impossible for for homeowners to sell. If somebody was living there, there was an explosion in dumping rental property property. So now they have this incredible crisis. On the available of rental availability and rental properties. "The with kevin mason actually kidding here but they always say you know some of the worst jobs available in the world. The guy who drives around and cleans up porta-pottys heck these days people on the front line working in hospitals. But i joke when i say the worst job in the world has being a sports referee. Because you wanna talk about thankless job running up and down doing all the hustle and having all the protocols these days and not getting any fame and glory and more importantly having to deal with a lot of rude people. I watched some of the college basketball games over the weekend the tournament championships and was amazed. At how many times coaches took timeouts and instead of talking to their players in the huddle sat there and basically browbeat the referee. And what's funny. Of course they all had their masks down around their chin which drove me crazy. I remember those few years when i did some umpiring some refereeing for organized baseball leagues and also for basketball back in the day when i was younger and i hated the job i hated the people complaining. All the time never satisfied. I hated the browbeating. It's a thankless job. Maybe not the worst job. But i'll tell you what it's a no win situation.

Homeless in the winter, in a pandemic. A deadly combination.

"Jordan heath rawlings. This is the big story. Jacob launch is a reporter and writer based in toronto who looked into exactly how deadly this winter can be for vice. Hello dick how are you. I'm doing well thanks I'm glad you're looking at this topic. I know this is not a usual winter for people who live on the streets. Why don't you just start By telling me about the man who who started the story for you a who is raphael. Andrei and what happened to him. So i don't know much about rafael. A been to the shelter where he stays. I have spoken to some people there. And the general sense that i got was that In this happens with a lot of folks who pass away in the street You know is that. They're very caring very helpful. People the communities that they are part of they love being part of anti in this case Mr andre was certainly a friend of the shelter in the shelter is a friend of him. But because of the covid nineteen That was given for the shelter to shut down He was forced to sleep at side. Instead of being able to stay in stores following the death of an indigenous homeless man on the streets of montreal his body was found in a portable toilet. Just meters away from a shelter that had been forced to close its overnight services because a pandemic restrictions and it's it's not uncommon to you know many people i talked to who are harm reduction workers Or otherwise work with homeless people It's definitely not uncommon to For homeless folks who are using drugs to go into a porta potty because usually it is the only sort of Private space that they have available to them Albeit it is not a a healthier or safe place to be. Can you explain just a bit. Maybe about the circumstances surrounding his death before we move on to to the bigger issue you mentioned that he was part of a shelter community but he was not in the shelter. Why not an and how do those rules. Impact shelter yes so essentially. What happened was shelter had had an outbreak of covid nineteen in december. And so they were told that they could reopen the beginning of the year but they would not be able to stay open past nine thirty presumably this because people would be saying sleeping indoors spending more time indoors together Maybe during the day to coming in and out and there's less There's less of a chance of a spread of the virus. That seems to be what the municipal health authority believes So there was that nine thirty curfew way. It should be noted that it's this Nine thirty closing time is different than the provincial curfew that is currently Enforcing a being enforced in quebec and there has been calls to the premier Francois ago To give homeless people in exemption from this curfew. I don't know if that would have made a difference here. But i certainly think that. Some of the recent lockdown measures are Are certainly backfiring much. More than they did during the first wave on people who are homeless or otherwise experiencing some form of Lack of shelter right. Well as you mentioned. There's a pretty hard curfew in quebec right now in and it does apply to homeless people as well. What are homeless people supposed to do in a curfew that orders them off the streets so for my understanding that the general the german general message being sent by the premier by the police is that homeless people will be fine. They're not going to be ticketed. Although we've seen some instances were homeless. People have been ticketed. This this happens all the time. Even pre covid homeless people being ticketed for sleeping inside of bus shelters or being ticketed for sleeping on the street corner. So it's not really a covid specific thing but certainly the only people probably going to be outside during a curfew are people who don't have a home to stay in and so right now. Francois's logo the premier has said that there is no exemptions He said that his concern with allowing exemption for homeless people is that it would create incentive for people to break curfew in then saying that they're homeless When approached by police officer. Which i think there are a number of reasons why. That's not a strong argument. I mean you know someone. S i'm sure someone who's going to their friends house or partying or whatever they're doing you know trying to do after eight pm is not going to go through the trouble of disguising themselves as a homeless person That's the that's the premier said that that that they would disguise themselves as homeless people so It's i think it's a bit absurd. Also the other issue here which is that. This is coming at a time when a lot of people are not Other encampments everywhere because of not being able to stay in shelters but more and more people are kind of facing homelessness a now in the at least here in toronto in in terms of the frontline workers that i've spoken to They're meeting a lot of first timers. A lot of people who've never been homeless before some people who are in their mid to late twenties And for those kind of people especially these situations are are really destabilizing because You know you're you're trying to figure out how to get by day today And you're also now trying to avoid running into problems with the law running into problems with perhaps other folks that are outside so it.

"And that seemed just fine. I was at a wedding once with a deluxe Porta potty and And I don't even know why I'm telling this story. Well, I hope that we don't either. Yeah, Let's forget you start to go now. Any questions? Okay, so we can't get him on because Kevin has a story about it waiting. He went to that head Porta potties. What? It was a very nice Porta potty. It was just is kind of big field. There's a big house on the top of the hill. So they put one down. There certainly didn't have to walk up the hill. But anyway, some They walked out of the port. A potty in the Porta Potty had your typical toilet And then there was also like a urinal to the left of it right and the person came out. And we started talking about this soap. They thought that was that was a saint. Yeah. Oh, Was it a girl? Yeah, we're like, OK, the real bathrooms up in the house on top of the hill. You might wanna head up to get there immediately. Now that kind of happened at a burn wedding. I was at a swell now that I think about is a common story, huh? Yeah. Outdoor portable bathrooms or you? No see, it's funny. We thought it was a big breakthrough that you add the urinal to the port a potty, So the men don't just make a mess for the ladies. It's still always a mask the whole situation. Well, of course it is. But at least it's a mess over by urinal. Maybe not all over the seat like it would be otherwise because we're too lazy and lift. Let's go in the woods. I think Mary's right if I have that option and really take that one married, but you can't find that good puck soap in the woods 3 14 on 7 20 diligent that took us boys. So I asked. What do you guys doing to celebrate the holidays differently? And Kevin said, You know, that time I went to a wedding with a porta potty. I can take you back if you want, because I did something really fun this weekend. Q. I took my granddaughter to saga Nash to see the lights of a nol Those streets. There is absolutely beautiful. I've never seen it before. There are so many people driving through and people walking. It's just it feels so festive. I can't imagine how popular those are this year because we've got nothing else to do. It was great, but I bet the line of cars was a little bit maddening. It wasn't terrible. People were moving along, and it's good. Yeah, it wasn't Careful. See there's fun things to be had people. All right, 3 15. Let's get a check of the cars now with Mary Vandeveld and this is an interesting situation We have going on north bound on the tri state and accident on the westbound. I 80 exit ramp. It's objective Semi reportedly had a load of pigs on it that are now traveling the roadway in that area. This is to 94 North and the West Moon. I 80 exit ramp have more on that in the next report, South bounded Ogden. There's an exit as well. Album Bishop Ford Accident. A cottage girl has just been cleared. Still, some heavy up on Ryan delays because of that, though, from the sky way out to 95th south bone on 55 exit between us 30 and Kate infirm road that's blocking the two right lanes. Vandevelde to be GM Traffic center. I'm sorry. Married you just lead with, um, an accident, A semi accident and other a bunch of piggy's on the loose. Yeah, and I'm trying to get this confirmed. This is this is going on. Actually, it's it's just reported right now that this semi lost its load of pigs all over the roadway on this exit ramp on the Tri state. Westbourne. I 80 lot of semis in that area as well. So I'm sure they're rounded up by now. Hopefully, we don't need you know, bacon situation. Whatever going on here on westbound. I 80 there's ham and bacon available and we don't need all the puns to start up now, E I seem to remember erected This is I feel like that. You care..

"Armstrong and getting this is the best of Armstrong and Daddy before we get to. How much would it take to get Joe to gain £30? Because of our home? Problem on having we got mold in our bathroom? We might have mold in that entire side of the house. Good man. That could be dangerous. No, it's gonna be many tens of thousands of dollars. Um, insurance says it's ah. Whatever it called sudden, unexpected act of God or something, they're going to cover it. But I don't know what the limit is there for different companies have different limits. Anyway, that aside, we're not going to know we have two full bathrooms in our small house, and they're both going to be out of Mission like a month, maybe on and tickle a train. So we need to get a cure an army camp Porta potty, which comes really growth. That's another option tree just have Just like they're just sit on over a ditch. This is what they used to do on my kids out there with a shovel. Let's play civil war. Um, I'm gonna get it out house and they're thinking I'll get to get that You've been to places where they have the fans were where we had the nicest outhouse have never been. Was that the Republican National Emergency? They were my God, Those outhouses were nicer than my bathroom. They're incredible. I practically expected one of the guys. They hand me like a paper towel As I was walking out. You need a breath mint. So those we have really nice portable bathrooms, and they kept them so clean. I've been to a couple of golf tournaments where Like in the sponsor, section. The where the rich people go there. Unbelievable. They're just they're luxurious. They're clean. They're pleasant there well lit. What you like. You got like 80 square feet for one person and really stretch out on the lighting. I remember in the really nice fan, so it's like real lighting instead of, but the idea of using a porta potty in our in our own yard just Not looking forward to it. Well, they Private one, I think takes away a lot of the variables right with the mental image that is conjured when you just mentioned Porta Potty is like, you know, on a hot summer day at the Asparagus fest. I'm not having a particularly loathsome example. I have actually done that. The number of times I've summer day at the Asparagus festival might actually be the last time I was willing to go to a free festival where I realized, OK, the difference between the festivals where they charge a couple of bucks in the free ones are just Night and day. Yeah, that's amazing for the Porta potty. My concern Here is so the surgery. I'm not having a music festival my backyard with Randall's going in there, spraying it all over the place. But removing some gross the commodity is buddy. Single use of the modern bathroom. Are you guys gonna be doing like the solar showers outside like how they do camping wise? I think about that We have to clean ourselves. Also easy yourself. We get that horse that horse tank finger? Yeah. Throw the kids in there a couple times a week. There's soap in the water. Yeah, have a bathroom out in our shop, but it be away a little bit of a walk out and drank. And our instant tank. Don't get him mixed up with a fire set under each one of them to give the water When we cook the boil the potatoes in Don't get mixed up. You're in the potato. Thank boy Get the Washington anyway. So back to the How about what I say $100 a pound We? We got on the conversation with Joe. $100 a pound on how much we'd have to give him to gain weight. No. No $1000 a pound. So what if I did it with you, Joe? How did we get started on this? So you gained £4 in four days over the weekend, So it would seem And you think you think you could get upon today? Could you get a pound a day for a month? And how much money would it take to get you to do that? And before and we won't get to a number because everybody's on financial situation..

Giga Texas Timeline Update, and the TSLA stock rebound

"Everybody. Robin our here, and today is kind of a Giga Day. We have news from gigafactory Shanghai Gigafactory, Texas gigafactory New York, and then we'll talk a little bit more about lucid ahead of their livestream unveil of the lucid air tonight, and of course, the stock which we can start out with dessel stock on the day to day finishing up eleven percent to three hundred, sixty, six dollars twenty eight cents on the back of a rising macaroni Environment Nasdaq for the day up two point seven percent. So as I said, yesterday, I, hate, stop-loss orders. This is exhibit a for why that is as Tesla today without much news swung back significantly in the. Other. Direction. That's really my only thought on the stock today. So let's move into the news. There was an interesting post this morning on Tesla Motors Clubs Forum by Ridge. Twenty twenty about a possible time line for Tesla's gigafactory in Texas. This user writes quote have some information on the tear factory build schedule. Tesla is sourcing how vendors slash contractors to bid on work at the site and quote this user then shares some screen shots presumably of some documents involved in that bidding, the most interesting of which lays out a project schedule in that project schedule not a first substantial completion date of May I twenty twenty one according to the American Institute of Architects. Substantial completion is quote the stage in the progress of the work when the work or designated portion thereof is sufficiently complete in accordance with the contract documents so that the owner can occupy or utilize the work for its intended use and quote the schedule also notes that the first dry in what happened on December thirtieth twenty twenty I xdrive just means that everything is sort of sealed up with the building shell so that interior work can commence without having to be exposed to the elements, and then in a separate page here that has also included. There's a more detailed schedule noting that in September they'll be doing things like underground electrical, mechanical plumbing, etc.. October would be fencing porta-pottys waste removal metals, recycling recycling removal, and then November would be architectural interiors which based on the dry and date assume would be non weather sensitive into your stuff. So obviously take this for what it's worth. It has just forum posts, but the documents to me look like they would be pretty legitimate I. Don't think there's a ton of reason to doubt it. I. Think for those of us that follow closely this would be pretty much in line with our expectations. This will be going from breaking ground to possibly production ready in under a year which we know Tesla is targeting based on their work active factory Shanghai originally and now With gigafactory Berlin as well. Speaking of Shanghai Tesla continues to make rapid progress at the gigafactory. They're the global times earlier. This Week reported that Tesla has completed the main section of phase two, which is for the Mata why and they write quote at present interior decoration and electromechanical testing being carried out and are expected to be completed on schedule in October and November and quote not exactly sure what interior decoration needs to be carried out and completed. I'm guessing that's probably something that's lost in translation probably more equivalent you interior design meaning, functional interior design. But regardless, we continue to see these reports about phase two in Shanghai though the Global Times appears. To also expect production to begin for the Monterey in one though they do cite other media reports on that which we have talked about. Personally, I'm still expecting some motto is to come out of gigafactory Shanghai. This you're probably not enough to be immaterial to quarterly results or the financials but more. So again, sign heading into twenty twenty one which cannot believe were that close to you already shifting back to the US and over to the energy side of the business with Peissel's gigafactory. In New, York a different type of gigafactory Tesla. Roddy today posted an article with the headline of quote vessel energy ramps hiring AC in New York for accelerated solar production and. Quote you on did actually re tweet this article in which Tesla Roddy writes quote a source familiar with the matter who spoke to Tessa. Roddy talk to employees at the plant who indicated the facility is currently operating on a twenty four hour schedule six days a week to keep up with demand. Altogether, this move seems to confirm the eighty eight acre location is accelerating solar production and installation insignificant way which coincides with the company's growth and the energy sector and quote while energy storage has definitely grown historically solar has actually been quite slow Tusla recently, which I think was correctly pointed out by Gordon Johnson in our bowl baird debate. So if we go. Back to two, thousand, seventeen, for example, cutie, Tesla deployed one, hundred, seventy, six megawatts of solar energy versus this most recent you only twenty seven megawatts of solar. There are a lot of reasons for that. The business model has shifted significantly but right now it's not at the point that at once what's Tesla's hope? Of course is that the solar roof changes that about which started in their cute you letter that quote solar roof installations roughly tripled in Q. to compare to key one, we continue to expand our installation team to increase the deployment rate and quote of course, this is a new product so to starting from a very low base for Tesla from. But hopefully, that growth rate continues we've also recently seen tesla cut their prices significantly for rooftop solar. Now, offering the lowest price systems in the United States at least at a dollar forty, nine per watt after incentives under cutting other systems and the US by about thirty percent on average. So plenty of reasons to be hopeful that Tesla is on the precipice returning to growth for the solar business and are on their way to finding a business model that works for them consistently for solar going forward. Next today on into provide an update to yesterday's discussion on delivery wait times. I've seen a few comments noting that those have changed for people today they have actually changed for me as well. So the model y currently sets for the all wheel drive version at seven to eleven weeks for me here in the Midwest two to four weeks for the performance for the Model S. and the Model X. Both of those currently sit at eight to twelve weeks versus yesterday's ten to fourteen. Weeks and the model three has held steady for all trims at two to four weeks.

New York City beaches open for holiday weekend, no swimming allowed

"A few days at the beach is typically a no brainer for Memorial Day weekend needless to say it is a little bit more complicated this year some beaches are open some are restricting who can go others are restricting what you can do there here to tell us where new Yorkers and new Jerseyans can go to welcome the summer wireless socially distancing is WNYC's Karen Yi and the Jake often hearts of Gothamist Karen Jake hello hi David it it it there is still so much we don't know about cope with nineteen but many epidemiologists say that with social distancing precautions in place heading to the beach does not pose a large threat for people in low risk groups Cameron let's start with you governor Murphy said beaches would re open for the holiday weekend is that right yes that's right so Murphy has said if speech is re opened they need to limit the amount of people on the beach and enforced social distancing so it's really gonna be up to each municipality to decide how to do that and what parts of the beaches or boardwalks to re open so remember not all of the beach is closed during the pandemic some have already re opened and some remain partially close and it's equally as complicated in New York City right Jake governor Cuomo joined New Jersey Connecticut and Delaware to open up the beaches but mayor bill de Blasio technically won't open up city beaches that's right David New York City is fourteen miles on public beaches are technically close what that really means is the beaches are closed to swimming sports picnics many of the social things people go to the beach for but you can still walk sit on the beach or even dip your feet into the water up to your ankles the idea is to discourage nothing Yorkers from going to the beach so it's not over crowded what about beaches on Long Island to Jones beach the Hamptons these are very popular spots for new Yorkers or they could be an option many all island beaches will be open this weekend but they're not exactly rolling out the red carpet for us New York City residents several towns including East Hampton have plans to limit or entirely banned outsiders from their shores that's led to some regional contentions of Nassau County official had to walk back in down and out of towners on Nickerson beach after my colleague Sylvia Chang points out that beaches that receive federal funding must be open to the public the state run beaches like Robert Moses in Jones beach will be open to everyone but they're restricting capacity to fifty percent and governor Cuomo says people could be turned away from parking lot as early as ten AM single parking is always a problem and beaches in both states Karen tell us about the Jersey Shore is parking to be restricted even more than usual yes so again it's gonna come down to home rule it's New Jersey right so it's gonna be up to each town since sandy hook which is run by the National Park Service is limiting parking to fifty percent and so is island beach state park which is run by the state mayors have told me that they're gonna be announcing reminders on loudspeakers there's gonna be civilian ambassadors patrolling the boardwalk there's gonna be a lot of signage but really it's gonna have to come down to trust trust that people will do the right thing and act responsibly what Jake in New York City you have reported on members of the NYPD enforcing social distancing measures in physically aggressive ways in the subways and on city streets can new Yorkers expect a large police presence on the beaches what is the plan for monitoring resource can definitely expect to see a major law enforcement presence this weekend and why PDP stale has been up thirty percent they'll be joined by parks police and thousands of social distancing ambassadors similar to New Jersey if things get too crowded the mayor says they may even put up fencing literally barricading the beaches anyone who tries to swim will be ordered out well in New Jersey some mayors are concerned about not enough police presence on the beaches Cameron that what are you hearing I spoke two point pleasant beach mayor Paul Kenitra and he's very concerned about this so his speech is partially open not the boardwalk so this means that Jenkins beach is also gonna be close but the biggest problem for him and re opening everything is that he says he can't hire the seasonal officers who normally boost up as police force during the summer because all the training academies are closed so for the things that are open for the part of each that is open he says this weekend will be a test run for whether the precautions they've implemented will work we need to see how realistic it is to have our badge checkers wearing the mask and gloves and in hot weather we need to make sure that our lifeguards are able to you know the date people and do things appropriately with the set up that we have one up one down on the lifeguard stands in with the new half the filters for their resuscitation devices so the mayor said there's really no playbook for this I mean everybody is really trying out what works for their particular beach okay so if people can solve the puzzle of finding an open beach what happens when they get there will there be open public restrooms or boardwalk restaurants open for food pickup so curbside pickup is allowed for nonessential businesses take out is going to continue for restaurants a New Jersey recently allowed to go cocktails on the public restroom issue again that's going to depend on the town whether they decide to open those or how they apply limits to that the one thing that the state is encouraging is that everyone wear a mask right and it's the same thing in New York there will be some to go through the options available re sparked beaches are is open many of the vendors on Coney Island and they'll be some bathrooms and Porta potties starting this weekend and finally you keep in mind the water's going to be fifty five degrees not exactly swimming weather even if you are out yeah I think that's gonna keep a lot of people out of the water we'll have to hear much more about how it goes this weekend WNYC's SXSW Will Go On Despite Coronavirus Concerns

"Welcome to the frame. I'm John Horn every year. A few hundred thousand people gathered in Austin Texas for south by southwest. It's an international festival of music film and Technology but with the threat of the corona virus at hand. Some people are saying that bringing massive crowds into one place could be a very bad idea. Facebook twitter Amazon and a few other tech and media companies. Already have dropped out of the festival which starts on March thirteenth. South by southwest organizers. Say they're nevertheless moving ahead. Dan Sullivan is a writer for Texas monthly and he joins us from Austin Dan. Welcome to the show for having me so before we get into the impact of the corona virus. Let's talk a little bit about just. How big south by South West is in terms of its physical presence in Austin? How much are people's lives affected when the festival comes to town? Well it's huge. It takes over a giant chunk of the city several miles especially the downtown area but also beyond that it does have a huge impact. Let's talk about some health. Concerns from people who live in Austin and online petition calling for a total cancellation of south by southwest. West has more than forty thousand signatures. I've been to south by southwest. It's been a number of years but like any popular gathering. There are a lot of people in a lot of lines it can be getting into a movie can be getting into a club getting into a restaurant. You are very much cheek to jowl with a lot of your fellow festival guests and I guess that's something that a lot of people might be concerned about. It's not just that you're inside venue with a lot of people. But they're massive crowds basically wherever you go on all the streets and a lot of public spaces. Yeah that is a very real part of the concern is that it's just going to put a lot of people in close quarters. The festival did talk today about potentially encouraging people to be further physically apart from each other whether that means capping the capacity at venues or starting a standing in line protocol. I don't know specifically but it's something that seemed to be aware of the head of twitter. Jack Dorsey was scheduled to speak but he's since cancelled. Because of the company's concerns about the corona virus in fact twitter said in a statement that it was cancelling all quote non critical business travel and events unquote. Who else has bowed out so far. We've seen twitter facebook Amazon Amazon Entertainment Amazon studios when out today. Tick Tock went out today. A measurable which usually has a pretty sizeable south by South West presence. Cancel yesterday. There's probably more to. We're talking with Texas monthly writer. Dan Solomon about south by southwest and concerns over the corona virus. I WanNa talk a little bit about the economic impact of south by southwest. Obviously there are a lot of hotels and restaurants that benefit but it seems from your own reporting. There are a lot of smaller businesses. That really rely on south by Southwest Festival didn't happen they'd be in a big amount of trouble. Yeah that's absolutely true. One thing that it's kind of hard to break apart is south by southwest rise with the rise of Austin Austin city of that is rapidly growing population and that growth has coincided with the rise of south by southwest. And so you've seen a lot of people and a lot of businesses that factor south by South West heavily into their business models. So you've got caterers. Who opened up operations because they knew that every march they could pay a third of their monthly bills. Off of one week I talked to all sorts of people who have jobs that you wouldn't think of as a south by southwest thing carpenters and pedicab drivers and people who rent Porta potties. And all of those people really do count on South by southwest as a huge part of their annual income. I think it's also important to note that south by southwest can be an important launching point for musical acts and for movies right now. I think there's about one hundred world premiere films including new movies from Judd Appetito. There's a documentary. About the Beastie Boys New King Arthur movie with Patel. I'm wondering in terms of its impact in the conversation about art and artists. How important would you say south by southwest has become? It's huge. I mean especially. The film festival has been growing every year and people like John. Appetite Tau like if he can't premier his movie at South by southwest any other film festival in the world would be happy to have him but there are a lot of people who get a benefit from small filmmakers independent filmmakers short filmmakers who get a benefit from premiering their phone at the same festival judd appetite out of festival with the prestige of south by southwest. And that would be. It'd be really difficult for people who are counting on that premiere to make connections to launch their careers to lose it as far as musicians. Go The festival itself doesn't pay very well but there are all of these events. Historically that happened around the festival often paid for by companies like Amazon and facebook and twitter. Who Get pretty good paychecks? And you'll see bands who wrote their entire tours around going south by South West so they can play. Fourteen shows in Austin that week including official showcase and without that economy happening it really does have a huge disruptive effect on a lot of Art Creativity. That's at the core of the festival the organizers of MIB TV which was set for later this month in France just cancelled that annual television convention. I'm wondering if you have any idea of what the organizers of south by southwest are trying to wrestle with now what is the balance they're trying to strike? I mean. I think that they do have a real concern. Certainly the city of Austin has a real concern if it makes more sense to have everything under the control of south by southwest which can at least institute hand washing protocols and recommended safe distances and have some authority over the people who who come to town for the festival versus just having sort of a chaos festival because all of those bands who booked their tors to Austin. Most of them are hand to Mouth. Starts Musicians. Who CAN'T AFFORD TO CANCEL? Literally they already took time off of work. They're going to be coming anyway. You know people who aren't traveling on badges people who are just coming to south by South West to have a good time a lot of them are still gonna come so I think that a big part of the concern right now is. Is it more useful for south by South West to continue to have control over what happens in Austin or is it more useful to just say everybody stay home? This isn't a safe place to be. And I think that they're legitimately struggling with that. And I'm sure there are also struggling with some very real financial considerations it will be hard to me bound from cancelling something that they've worked on all year. I think that there's a real resistance to that. Just because this is all they do south by southwest project of another organization. They put on this festival for ten days in March and having to cancel it just days before it's supposed to begin. It's supposed to start a week from Friday. I think that's something that they're just resistant to do. Because they've been working on it for a year then Solomon is a writer for Texas monthly. He joined us from Austin Dan. Thanks so much for coming on the

PBA DOT com slash B W daily they from wondering I'm David Brown and this is business wars daily happy Friday everyone we've made it. I don't know about where you are but it's still awfully hot down here. In Austin the kind of heat that's best treated with the day the movies or a nice cool dip in the swimming pool boy. Does that sound good. The problem is most of us. Don't have swimming pools and most public pools get drained after Labor Day. So finding a spot to swim hasn't been the easiest task ask until recently when a startup named swiftly decided to take the airbnb approached pools using the swiftly APP. If you have a pool in your backyard and you want to make a little extra money you can offer strangers the opportunity to rent it out by the hour for feet considerate the sharing economy underwater order in a good way since I'm actively looking for weekend swim spot I thought at tested out went to the website plugged in my city Austin Texas and chose the same day hey to see what I could find. At the last minute. My search turned up seven pools ranging in price from twenty dollars an hour at the east side country club to one hundred dollars an hour or for a private pool with a hot tub in someone subdivision at it'd be fair. The Country Club looked pretty stark and that hundred dollar an hour pool looked clean and peaceful but all this begs the question. Do you trust swimming in a stranger's pool. How clean is it and who else might be there the CO founders twenty-two-year-old CEO Benhamlat skin and his business partner Asher Weinberger say they thought of that they contract with local pool maintenance companies to make sure you won't find anything Hickey in your rented pool as for Privacy in the New Yorker writer Bruce Handy reported that simply tries to ensure that is well L. for instance handy says owners are supposed to keep their window shades down no spying allowed but when handy made a test visit in Long Island the owner was laws peering out the window. That's pretty creepy but it could be worse. We imagine for those pools that are labeled. Nude friendly swim please. Origins is our humble more like a teenager snow shoveling or lawn mowing business than a Silicon Valley Gig Economy Startup home from college in Lakewood New Jersey a couple of summers ago last skin got the idea while swimming in a neighbor's unused pool his family had been paying the neighbor for the privilege as Handy writes in The New Yorker Alaskan thought it could be a real business using Google Earth lasker found eighty pools nearby and contacted their owners all but four refused to talk to him but those four will they agreed to list their APU for rent and swiftly was born though at the time last game had no idea that it would eventually be a real business with pools in so far thirty thirty six states swiftly took off fast on the back of a homemade website and a newspaper at the business grew more than thirty pools in just a couple of weeks and and then lastly told Handy. MSNBC mentioned simply and Alaskans website crashed a year later. Alaskan dropped out of college to go full time with the new business today he and Weinberger have a professional website liability insurance for hosts and even rental Porta potties for hosts who are really busy to afford all of this simply charges the pool owners commissions and takes a small fee from swimmers. The metrics around the business seem a little loosey Goosey in one of the many articles covering simply the founders say some hosts. You're making four thousand dollars a month renting out their pools in other that number climbed to ten thousand to fifteen thousand dollars a month regardless of what the true earnings really are one thing is most likely true for many families. The backyard Dr Pool begins as an enthusiasm and winds up as a wasteland swiftly turns it back into something thoroughly useful. How long will it take for a rival pool. Sharing during company to pop up possibly not very long but for now swiftly doesn't appear to have a head to head or should we say a pooled pool competitor but within the wider recreation industry will there are more and more airbnb like apps for almost anything you want to do you could choose a different recreation creation sharing. Amid Homelessness Crisis, Los Angeles Restricts Living In Vehicles

"This message comes from n._p._r. Sponsor xfinity some things are slow like a snail races. Other things are fast like xfinity x. by get get fast speeds. Even when everyone is online working to make wifi simple easy awesome more at xfinity dot com restrictions apply around the country cities with big homeless populations have passed laws banning things like panhandling or sleeping in public areas here in los angeles. Officials are cracking being down on people living in vehicles but as anna scott from member station k._c._r._w. Reports the rules create their own problems. It's not unusual in l._a. To come across clusters of motorhomes like on this big commercial street in north hollywood this area right here thank god they're not following the signs. It's only for two hour parking but they're not bothering us right now. Edith graze is one of nearly ten thousand people who live in vehicles inside l._a. City limits some live in cars ars others and vans but campers. R._v.'s are the most visible and the hardest to park grayson. Her husband ran a window washing business until her husband in had several strokes and couldn't work that put us where we could make rant saw so we bought the motorhome but it's been tough. L._a.'s city council recently reinstated a ban on sleeping in vehicles overnight in residential areas. The rules also forbid living vehicles within a block of a park or a school school. I asked grays how much of her time is spent looking for parking. All of it and it's very difficult it causes a lot of stress in my life today evade. The parking people went by. They looked at us because we're only supposed to be here for three days. But where do you move to within the last couple of years. We started order to have <hes> campers. Mobile homes parked along cold water here. Walter hall owns a home near coldwater canyon avenue close to where the grades are parked and he says vehicle encampments have caused parking shortages and sanitation issues arbitrage and public urination. That's the type of the thing that we really would prefer not to see all supports. The city's rules even though they aren't strictly enforced and mostly just shuffle people around you know this. This type of thing is described as a whack a mole they disappear one plays only to reappear someplace else. One thing that could help is safe parking that is lots designated for overnight camping with security and porta-pottys l._a. Only has about one hundred safe parking spots for more than five thousand thousand vehicles. A tiny fraction of the need officials have promised to expand that but in the meantime critic say having strict parking rules is inhumane at this is a stupid law this law if passed is gonna directly contribute to these people being on the street several of the families as at my children's elementary school are struggling with homelessness and it's unconscionable that they would be criminalized erica ferston and mel tillakaratne. E were two of dozens who showed up at city hall recently when the parking rules came up for renewal laws restricting living in vehicles are on the rise around the country according to the national law center on homelessness and poverty and when l._a. City council voted thirteen to zero to extend its version protesters temporarily early shutdown the meeting during the break councilmember mcqueen harris dawson said he agrees is that the cities small safe parking program and widespread restrictions aren't a sufficient solution of course it's inappropriate. It's inappropriate to have thirty thousand people living on the st. I agree but the city needs time to get ahead of this problem. City council will take up. "Hey. Oh, hey, oh with that. With me you. Holy okay. But it was it's not a place that I would think here's a safe place to go to the restroom. Yeah. But they understand that you're gonna have to take shit like again, coffee houses or self aware. Like, they will equip you for the the deed ahead. You know, like, I've never had a bad experience on a coffee shop bathroom ever. They've always been very nice. The only problem is if it's like, a mom and pop coffee shop because then it's like, a great somebody's uncle built this, you know. Those are kind of shitty. It feels like shitting area. Worst polices are the mom and pop gas gestation. Yep. Those tough probably the worst bathrooms I've ever been to that is one step up from porta potty. Yes. Honestly. They're pretty bad the lowest let's go lowest highest so shitting outdoors in elements and then having people on the camping trip. See you is the worst possible way that sounds, but pretty terribly bad the next rung above that is shitting outdoors in elements. But no, one sees you. Right. So a little better. Cain shitting in a porta potty is the next one. So not quite on the elements, but still pretty bad. I would switch the last two. You just said really, you think shooting at a potties pretty is worse elements in not getting caught. Yes. One thousand person. Yeah. But you won't get caught like they'll own. The worst is getting caught like people seeing you know, worst is getting cut next porta-pottys. Okay. Next is not getting outside. Okay. I think that we should have Paul why Arias calling at some point and talk this over with us because he's the only person I know who shit outside multiple times and has different. Versions that. Okay. See now. We're okay. If you have might change my answer. Okay. Specifically about shitting. Then you're right porta-pottys just was just shitting paying easy shit pants. No big deal such patriarchal comment, pure pants. Do it all the time. It's fine. Thanks for doing the laundry this week, by the way. I appreciate that. So like, okay. So in terms of shitting, though, it goes outdoors and people see you in elementary outdoors in the elements. No, one sees you in a porta potty at like a festival or something still horrifically bad experience. Right. But at least you can sit down you have something to support your hiney while you're doing your business rate. Probably some toilet paper. Like, it's okay. You know? Next worst experiences a gas station because at least you've got four solid walls and a roof. Right. Maybe the door doesn't lock can put your foot up against it. Right. Yeah. Probably still cold. Maybe not climate controlled. The worst though is if you have to go get the key from inside. Right. If you have to go use the bathroom like, what are you protecting gas station. It's always garbage, especially well that doesn't mean people are going to be any more respect. No, they'd be less respectful because it's like a boo-boo got the key to worst part is when they attach it to something enormous. Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah. It's like, hey, guys. I'm shitting. Here's your. Walking away with two by four. Shame. It's so true. It's terrible. Imagine if somebody that's that's the plot to sitcom someone steals a two by four like, they take it with them. Anyway. They just are like you people deserve dignity, man..

You've heard of the oil cartel or the drug cartel but what about the poop cartel?

You've heard of the oil cartel or the drug cartel but what about the poop cartel?

"Obsessions. Mine is cartels. I will admit it. I am fascinated by cartels when businesses get together and decide not to compete, decide that they are too powerful and too special for the law of supply and demand like OPEC does for oil. And what I love about cartels is that they are set up because of greed. I mean, who wouldn't love to charge more for your product, but then someone always gets too greedy and starts to cheat. They stab each other in the back Femi. Those thinking about this, the life and death of cartels. When I heard a story from my friend Jeff placentas he worked for this group called innovations for poverty action. You could call it nerds without borders, nerds, without borders. It's a nonprofit that helps get economists to help out with problems in poor countries. And Jeff was telling me about this one particular cartel that his group had encountered in Senegal. The poop cartel yet, who is this poop cartel that you speak of? So you've seen in the way porta-pottys get serviced here. When you're porta potty is full, you've probably seen the trucks that come by with a tanker truck with the big homes and they suck it out and clean it. And it's the same thing in Senegal. Like households have a latrine pit. That's, you know, kind of like a big port, a potty and gets full. You need to get it cleaned out, but it looked like these trucks were perhaps fixing their prices. They looked like they were crisis were permanently high instead of maybe a competitive market that you'd expect to see. And obviously that put it out of the reach of a lot of people who needed it move over OPEC because there's price-fixing and Senegalese poop. Innovations for poverty action sent a rag tag team of economists to Senegal each with their own skills each with a single mission. Could you create a more efficient market by turning the poop, cartel truckers against each other. Ah, poop war. This this I had to see.
