"In april. Two thousand and twenty. I made what many perceive is a risky decision volunteered to be deliberately infected with covid nineteen. This infection would be part of what is cold. A human challenge show where young healthy people given a vaccine and then deliberately exposed to the virus that causes covid. Nineteen these trials help. Researchers figure out more quickly if a vaccine is working. I think this research is crucial. Because today i'm going to speak to you for six minutes in that time. Roughly twelve hundred and fifty people will be confirmed infected with covid nineteen twenty. One people will die and then this pot repeat hour after hour and day by day until we're able to vaccinate most of the eight billion people affected but squabble crisis. Scientists have been working around the clock to make those vaccine's reality. But what should we do when the human cost of waiting for vaccines is rising by the day. This is a human challenge shells. Come in the different from the traditional phase. Three bucks trials taking place now where people are given a vaccine or placebo. An oss to go about their everyday lives. Researchers have to wait to see how many people in each group become infected until enough of them get sick. We don't have enough data to know whether a vaccine is working. Finding effective vaccine with this method can take months sometimes years and it requires thousands of volunteers. A challenge tall works foster because research control exposure instead of waiting for people to get sick so instead of a year we could know in as little as a month whether a vaccine seems effective instead of thousands of volunteers a challenge shawl relies on just fifty to one hundred because we know if a sudden when people are exposed and develop disease. These trials also allow us together data about the early stages of infection and our response. This data is impossible together in any other way especially for people who become infected but never showed symptoms. This knowledge is important for designing policies. That limit covid nineteen transmission. The time saved translates into precious month's headstart on manufacturing getting a small working covid. Nineteen vaccines scenes foster. These trials are useful even their recent phase through results on encouraging. The arrival of the fuss vaccine is going to be a monumental breakthrough. it just isn't quite the fairy tale ending role harping full. We're going to need multiple vaccines because we just don't have the infrastructure needed to immunize eight billion people on the planet with just one kind. Each type of back seen requires its own special process and equipment to make store and deliver it if we had multiple working covid nineteen vaccines. We could make use of all of our equipment at the same time. Some of the leading candidates need to be kept extremely colds before they live limit to people. This can be really hard especially in countries where there isn't reliable electricity or a secure method to store them. Scientists have been using human challenge. Charles for hundreds of years. They've sped up the development vaccines against typhoid and cholera. And i've helped us better understand how immunity develops to things like the flu. Malaria and dengue gay with use them for other types of coronavirus. Before there's been a lot of debate about whether challenge charles a too risky. I happen to think that those risks of taking a challenge trial would recruit young and healthy participants think between the ages of twenty and twenty nine fewer than one percent of people in that age group need to be taken to hospital after becoming infected with covid nineteen likely even lower in a challenge trial because researchers check to make sure that participants have no pre existing conditions. The risk of a young healthy person dying of covid nineteen is around five thousandth of a percent

Sisters final from two thousand and two Venus Against Serena and we have just watched it, and it was the start of Serena Williams dominating and. It was it's been fascinating. We've watched little moments from all of their next three Grand Slam finals that would follow straight away as well, and it's just one of the great stories of tennis. The there's ever happened. Really the the Williams Sisters Story and it never ceases to intrigue me just to watch how they try to deal with the moments how to deal with the situation that they're in. And we're here to relive it with you on the tennis podcast Katherine how you doing I'm. Okay the same thanks David. In the same spot out there's. Nothing changes. In the same position as well. I'm so glad I bought my new office chair before. Episodes basically been here for. Ten straight days and Now. Beds right next door to it. Yes I two thousand and two. In two thousand two. What were you doing in two thousand and two things picks up on the family photo album front, Catherine O. F T. Year and I remember study leave coinciding exactly with the French Open. Which? Recouping Great. To treat. Filed for juggled manage that Juggling Act potentially better than you did in the lost years. I'm saying I didn't want to repeat any of my qualifications exactly ten years on from when from what I completely failed mine at. Two, thousand and two, you were six. Yeah, not too much to report really. Just getting on with it properties. Getting on. Roy David vs your this must have been your first years of freelance. Yeah left the ATP by this time, and I was going off to tournaments on my Just trying to wet for anybody you'd have me and yes I remember covering Rome shortly before this French. Open that. We're talking about right now. member covering Serena in interviewing hair and yeah is it was an interesting time? To be covering the sports in that way. And I. What's My I in that year for BBC Radio Five Live? So yeah, it was the start of a very different chapter. For me! And Yeah. There's so much going on in the tennis world. There was this crossover Rivera's, wasn't it? Because we we we still saying these head to head rivalries, but this one became more and more prevalent with every passing tournaments, and just to give you an idea of what else was going on in the world at that time in two thousand to the Queen Mother died. The all spoons premiered on MTV. Tamil Tigers in Sri Lanka. Government signed ceasefire ending nineteen years of civil war. And fifty percent of the UK population by now have Internet access. That one's for you Catherine thirty. Keep it partridge. What would I need to save for it? NOT TO BE PARTRIDGE? I was just thinking before you said the Internet thing always thinking Oh. This is on tricky today. Of taking a step up. and. Go my favorite bit. Getting used to it. So tennis wise. At this point, we have moved on a year from yesterday. Show when Jennifer Capriati when the French Open title, the rest of that year was dominated by Venus Williams. Who Won Wimbledon and the US Open beating Serena in the final? What has happened so far in two thousand and two Matt Well Jennifer kept `priority has defended her Australian Open title a tournament which Serena had to miss through injury and Venus Williams loss of the first ever to Monica salish. still whenever I see that Monica was still going strong in two thousand and two. That always kind of amazes me. Yes? Then they get on the hull courts and Serena really starts dominating. She doesn't actually she doesn't actually lose. A match competed national hard court in two thousand and two to start the season both sisters. Boycott Indian Wells for the first time following the racists incident in two thousand and one. That's a boycott that would go on until Twenty fifteen for Serena Twenty sixteen for Venus. And, then Serena gets her first tore level where against Venus in the Miami semifinals, six two six two and then announces a South was one of the favorites full the French, open by winning Rome beating Justyna non Jennifer Cat `priority so. That definitely you know. Venus is obviously dominated the before Serena's now really becoming a force Worth I'm actually wrote that they were threatening to tiger is. I think that being in terms of what tiger woods was doing. Ingolf at that stage just become such a dominant force and they were the they were. They were the driving force in the game. They were the biggest stoves, the biggest stories getting the biggest crowds and actually align i. read his that. Talks of combining the tools though bit like we've been talking about recently with this with this merger idea, but it was very much. Kind of the pay and coaching the Women's tool to relocate Ponte Vedra where they had their head offices and. Thinking that, it made sense for the ATP. Jomo thumbs alliant. Is that boils down to this on AC- went be around for much longer, and no other male player comes close to the international stardom of the Williams sisters. Why not try to get in on the action?

"Right. Where do we did party? You were just complaining. Hanging out in Finland like no one goes do winter outdoor. So you think it's going to be a party in March. When yes reason blowing thirty I don't think so because you know, it's also a party the waste management open, which is nowhere near Erez state, which is in January bre, and that's all not only I gotta school you about animals now. I gotta school you about. Yes. School me on school me on a place where I went to school. Go ahead. Yeah. That's hold on man. What is the temperature like there when we are out there in January comparatively to what the temperature and conditions are like in Jacksonville beach in March. Well, different. I'm glad you asked because two of the mornings. There was a little frost delay in Scottsdale. You showed up and pants because it was cold in the morning, and then one of the afternoon there was hail and cold and it was a cold weekend. And what did the crowd what? It was the crowd like on that Sunday when it was a HALE in cold awesome. They still showed up because college kids show point, you know, matter when it is. So you're telling me. You've never been more wrong. Your college kids in the big ten don't party because it's cold outside. I did not say that. And we're not talking about the big ten. I'm telling you that. Here's the thing. How many times has the tournament in how many times has the waste management? Switch dates. It's been Super Bowl weekend. Forever. Thank you. Thank you. You're well, guess what? The crowd knows exactly when that thing's going to be they and every so that part like look there are times at the Players Championship. When it was in may that it was, you know, sixty which down there normally may we're in the eighties in the nineties by then and that didn't stop people from coming out because you had these anomalies of you want. Do you want the average temperature in Jacksonville for the dates of the players now, you sure positive because it don't matter seventy five seventy four seventy three sixty eight that sound awful God. I hope the college kids are okay. Hope for the wearing their Patagonia north face to get through the treacherous conditions. It's going to keep them from partying and mid March at Ponte Vedra. All right. All right, and they didn't ever rains in southern California either. Yeah. Like that we can LA. I'm so glad that happened to you. Well, yeah. Because it never rains in southern California. So you're. What's the average temperature LA that time of year? Perfect and one time one time, look, here's the thing. What happened to the crowds at Ponta Vija when they went from March to me day exploded. The crowd size was huge. It turned into a community event. Exactly what you had at the waste management open. It. That's what it turned into. Now. You think because you move at the March that that crowds come a with you got bad news for you partner. That's not gonna happen. Okay. So can we get is there a way and be like, look, I have a party every Friday night. And then you like man, we got a great crowd that comes every Friday night when we throw our parties. Hey, everybody were moving the party Tuesday. Oh, understand where everybody went your allergies. Today are awful. They're waylon. You went from salmon to wildebeest migrating. Yes. We'll we'll talk about the migration of animals, and that's exactly what this is. You are changing a pattern that you. You taught a crowd of pattern. And now, you're changing the pattern. And you think the same crowd is going to show up. You are going to be very disappointed if that's the case. All right. So. We'll do is towards the end of will at the end the conclusion of the players this year. We will do a crowd comparison. Also now, I will say this. I of we should take a picture..

"My dog digs dirt his back. We're talking about a wonderful organization. Canine four warriors. Let me ask you something. Is it hard to choose the match I should say 'cause I always wonder about that. I know you're carefully plays. Yes. It is it is a very careful placement. And what happens is the the warrior operations team, which does all the interviews and working on getting everyone scheduled and checking on them because we have a fifteen month waiting list right now for veterans coming into the program and the whole goal is to keep working harder to get more dog. So we can train them and get that list down. But so they work really hard on knowing the person in the veteran coming in with that application and talking with them in the screenings, and and then they work carefully with the kennel staff on finding the dog that they think is going to work best for that home and that person's personality and every once in a while you'll have one that isn't the right match, and they will do a switch really quick. They usually within a day. And now, it's not gonna work out. But it it is pretty amazing how well they have it to a fine tune science there. And I mean what a win win situation when I began where people skeptical thinking will really how can this work? Yeah. I heard from our founder that people did say it's gonna fail. This isn't gonna work. There's no way it's gonna work that, you know, the shelter dogs or too scarred. And himselves they've been through trauma. And you know, it's just there's there's no way that you're ever going to make this work at, but you know, what we find. It's almost like the fact that you're rescuing the dog, and they rescue the words they heal and bond together, and they save each other. I love that. And who are the trainers are trainers. They're fantastic. We brought them in from all over and the you know to ramp up to get more trainers. We've actually started an apprentice program where if a person wants to have that end goal of being a canine trainer. Just so we can, you know, get more and they're hard to find. They can start out just kind of working with the dog. And walking them and doing the canine exercising cleaning, the kennels, and they can flow only move them way up to where they start getting more and more apprentice hours work nice training with the other trainer. And then that is that's become our new way of finding and training additional trainers. So we can ramp up the program listeners should know that too because that's something they might want to get involved in and out of the Lutely, right? Or the ways we ask people to help if you're in our area Ponte Vedra, and that kind of thing we could use your help in in being an ambassador to our program or the kindle enrichment and seeing the kennel if you have a special talent we look for that need as well. But treasure is always needed. That is your financial support. We do not take government money. So we're completely. Supported by the wonderful generosity of private donors. So make a Danish or come a guard dog that is where twenty two dollars a month. And that number twenty two is very significant to us because that's how many veterans are committing suicide each and every day you could become a guard dog, and that's just the twenty two dollars a month pledge to our program. Really folks, you have to log on because the pictures you have pictures of your graduates win their partner, and they're just I mean, really that says it all it's just a wonderful wonderful, you know, just wonderful wonderful organization. It's throwback Thursday. This way back Wednesday was flashback Friday. There's a milestone Monday, I saw picture I think from us at the baseball game the game seven World Series. I think. Theory baseball game. Isn't it? Rugby? No, no, not a baseball the baseball game. Yeah. It was a baseball game. And then also on Instagram if you're following Bryce Harper. And if not you should be he is either trolling or just, you know, having a day with the bulls hat on. Right. Right. Right. Look, I've read people saying one of my buddies who I tweet with on Twitter were saying the bulls had as the Yankee hat of NBA hat. Yes. Everyone has it. But I get it. I'm not telling you that. He's telling you that he's coming to Chicago. He intentionally did that the first day of free agency to make people say he's having fun with this. He knows the cubs fans are tweeting trolling you. He's trolling. I believe. Think he's trolling. I think he I think he's just having fun with okay? Fine. I think there's a distinct different. I think trolling is like I'm doing this on purpose to get a reaction. I think he's doing this just because he knows he's like look I got a bull's hat on. People are going to say some things by dogs. Neighbors wrigley. I think. Stat. You ever mean your dog Wrigley? If you have no connection to the cops. Dave things like that. I have a friend whose family him way from Boston. They've named their kids states. Like, it's weird. I don't think it's weird. But it's like it's that they don't have a reason for it. They just like the name would be one, right? Yeah. You can have kid named Montana. Yes. So my point. Pennsylvania. Cities not state cities cities. Austin as Montana. My point is that there's sometimes there's no reason for things sometimes maybe they're just like maybe they were at gum. Come at Wrigley daughter, Ponte Vedra and his lady friend was like you don't want that name Wrigley. Let's name our dog Wrigley. And he goes, all right, whatever. Name the dog Wrigley. I don't care. Name the dog, whatever you want to name the dog. He's totally having. Do you think Bryce Harper will be signed? But if you had to put on the cops. Yeah. These last couple of days about the money talk has been worried. It has been trying to get their ducks in a row. So that they can offer a giant deal. Maybe maybe so I don't know what to think, I don't know. Put a percentage on it. What percentage are you confident that they're going to sign would you think it would be more Bryce Harper than Machado? Now more that you know about Machado's. Yes. Yes. Knowing what they're looking for to like Cole hamels use the term gret. You know, why if you feel like you need to take things more seriously? Why would you sign the guy doesn't like to run? You know, I take his talent. Don't get me wrong. I'm just telling you that. If if the choice play the guy pay the guy who plays the game like his hair on fire, so three. A lot of hair good hair as well. Dave Robinson will join us next. Wiles in for the northwestern Notre Dame rivers going to Penn State Michigan. We've got lots of college football. "Yeah mother's day i always golfed on mother's day because you could walk up anywhere and walk right on so i'll be doing that today here to keeping that tradition yes speaking of traditions of course the us senior open happens here at the broadmoor broadmoor east it starts on june the twenty fifth and it'll be here before you know it kenny perry is that he fending champion and as they always do on these big events they bring the defending champion in ahead of time a month or two ahead of time for a media day and they did that this week we played some golf we sat down with kenny perry did a really fun interview with them talk about a really really genuine down to earth guy and we're going to play that interview so long we cut it into two parts we're gonna play that for you on the show today beginning with our next segment and then wrapping it up with the segment after that but what a fun guy in a fun time talking to kenny perry this week well he's one of those small town rural kind of country dudes that you know doesn't isn't full of himself never has been and had a couple of good stories about you know part of his career and stuff like that and good good talking with a guy like that fifty seven years old now playing the tour champions after a long regular pga tour career and he'll be here defending his title starting june twentyfifth along with the rest of the best senior golfers in the world everybody knows that golf especially if you play golf you know it's not the easiest sport in the world for further proof of that look at what's going on this week in ponte vedra florida at the players championship they annually brag about the players having the best field in golf and it's no brag it's fact they do draw the best field in golf you're in iraq they all show up at teepee sawgrass and they all get to seventeen and the first couple of days they hit a lot of balls in the water and if the best field in golf it's a lot of.
