Fired State watchdog was probing Saudi arms sale, top Democrat says

"House Democrats are launching an investigation into the firing of another inspector general this time at the state department president trump dismissing Steve clinic late last Friday after secretary of state Mike Pompeii asked him to they've been reports for awhile of grumbling in the department about Pantera using taxpayer funds for personal services the state department watchdog was reportedly looking into those complaints NPR diplomatic correspondent Michele Kelemen is here and Michele so counting up in the past six weeks trump fired the intelligence community I G. the acting defense department I. G. and the acting health and Human Services IG a pattern for perhaps your sense of what's going on while Democrats are clearly seen a pattern and they're looking for ways now to strengthen the protections four inspector generals there been a few Republicans expressing concern senator Mitt Romney for instance over the weekends and the firing of multiple inspectors general is unprecedented and a threat to accountable democracy Susan Collins tweeted over the weekend that the president had not provided the kind of justification for the removal of the state department's IG as required by law that she helped author but for the most part Republicans have been pretty silent about this trend yeah well and we've known for a while that there were grumblings as we said about Mike Pompeo the secretary of state attention to using taxpayer money for personal purposes now reports that when it was looking into this what can you tell us about what he was looking at well we're hearing from Democrats on the hill that about a couple of things that he was investigating there's a report today from The Washington Post enough source did confirm it for me that the inspector general had mostly completed an investigation into the secretary's controversial decision to get around opposition in Congress and green light billions of dollars in arms sales to the Saudis he had this emergency declaration that raised a lot of eyebrows last year and the I. G. was looking into that democratic sources also say that the I. G. was looking into the misuse of a political appointee basically that Pompey had a U. S. government employee of do personal errands for him and for his wife things like picking up the dog at the groomers or things like that when I ask the inspector general's office over the weekend I was told that they can't confirm or deny any particular investigation and the state department has refused to comment on any of that moon what about other members of the state department what are your sources telling you about their thoughts about this well I I think there were you know Lynn it was a pretty well respected guy and they're kind of it some people said they were kind of numb at this point there is definitely a concern last year CNN did this whole report about some security agents feeling like they've become over eats with guns there were a lot of concerns last year that I heard about when that Mrs Fontana was on trips with the secretary so that these these have been things that have been growing yeah well and as you said the Democrats has certainly been vocal about this year's the speaker Nancy Pelosi on face the nation yesterday the president has the right to fire any federal employee but the fact is if it looks like it's in retaliation for something that the attorney the I. G. the inspector general is doing that could be unlawful so what is your sense of repercussions if upon pale of war you know president trump is as follows he just said he has the right to fire federal employees well the Democrats on the hill have opened an investigation they're asking for the state department to hold any documents that they have that are related to this they need to find out if it was in retaliation for any of these issues that that Steve when I had been investigating I'd also say that you know it's not that he was he was very controversial I mean he played kind of a minor role in the whole impeachment saga but there were a couple of IG reports that that he had done recently that sort of angered top management there were things about personnel matters dealing with the trump administration officials retaliating against those who they call Obama holdovers at the department one report led to the resignation of an Assistant Secretary of state for international organizations and another was critical of one of Pompey's top aides Iran guy Brian hook so you know if if it was in retaliation for any of these things then that could be a problem for them we'll see how this unfolds NPR diplomatic correspondent Michele Kelemen thanks as always sure thank thank

Despite virus, Pompeo in Israel to talk West Bank annexation

"Good morning a journey by secretary of state Mike Pompeii raises a question Pompey was in Israel to meet prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his new coalition partner Benny Gantz it's only Pompeii second trip abroad since the pandemic curtailed much travel so the question what is happening that made this trip essential NPR's Daniel Estrin joins us from Jerusalem Daniel good morning good morning Tim what's it like anyway when the secretary of state travels during a pandemic it's a lot of choreography to try to keep them in a bubble and this is visit is only six hours long Pompey was doctor is been checking the temperature of the staffers in the reporters on the plane one of those reporters said that many people wore masks on the plane but not all of them and Pompey was getting an exception from Israel's ban on foreign visitors no foreigners are allowed in Israel at all right now when he landed in Israel he was wearing a red white and blue face mask he then delivered remarks standing next to prime minister Netanyahu they stood about six feet away from each other they were not wearing masks but their advisors were and the US ambassador to Israel was not there at all because he has mild upper respiratory symptoms and even though he tested negative for the virus he's not meeting Pompeo just in case is it clear what made this trip so important that's the big question Steve you know why it's just not do it on zoom okay says there are issues he wanted to discuss face to face he mentioned a couple he mentioned keeping up the pressure on Iran Israel's successes in combating the corona virus he also alluded to China's connection to the virus all issues that maybe don't need a face to face meeting in the middle of a pandemic but there is one big topic that a lot of people here talking about that they could be seeking to coordinate on the two leaders and that is trump's Mideast peace plan here's what Pompeo said in a time now we'll get a chance to talk about the vision for peace for now some months on up from the day that you came to Washington with president trump announced that vision for peace when you were there there remains work yet to do and we need to make progress on that I'm looking forward to it and let's just be clear here trump's peace plan would have Israel expand its borders and annex every single Israeli settlements in the occupied west bank and and they tell me I want to do that as early as July what would the United States have to say about such a plan that is the other big question because there are mixed signals coming from the trump administration and from Israeli leaders on what exactly their positions are here I mean Pompeo says it's up to the Israelis decide on on whether to annex the Israelis say depends on U. S. approval but this is a very explosive issue most countries in the world oppose annexation and they want a Palestinian state to be created in the in the west bank instead and you know annexation would anger trump's Arab allies European countries are even considering sanctions on Israel if it annexes land you have that but then on the other hand the west bank is the land of the Bible and an annexation of that land would be very popular with trump's evangelical base especially in the run up to the November elections so I think the big question here is what does Israel want to do does it want to annex leaders here are divided on that the right wing Netanyahu seems to be pushing for it but his centrist partner Danny Gans it doesn't seem to be a Daniel very briefly some people who maybe don't follow the news every day out of Israel may hear you say prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu and that they're asking wait a minute he's prime minister again he is for the last year and a half the time now was struggling to win a new term but now he and his election rival Danny guns have agreed to a deal that's on you know gets eighteen more months in

"There has been this there has been this change it's not one you're gonna hear a much the press is not when you're gonna hear about much from the rest of the media but I'm here to tell you that Pompey was the eighteen I mean these guys not when it comes to foreign policy these guys know what they're doing they understand how to pursue the president's goal the president gives them a very free hand operate and in a look I'm I'm very critical of the sclerotic ossified bureaucracy of the state department because I think it does need to be shaken up but that's gonna take a long time it's been around forever right presidents come and go but the department is forever that's their unofficial motto they are way too hierarchical it's way too stuffy and you know this person that person you know they they they have it's it's almost like they have a paramilitary organization wherever just sitting around you know drinking cheating crumpets all the time but they don't need to be a paramilitary organization because they're really just talking that other part of it does it does need to be there so that the state department itself there's a lot that I think I think should just be change institutionally an attitudinal Lee but Pompeii in his team the senior people that I saw on action that I got to talk to and speak on an off the record in they're pursuing this president's objectives and they're turning Latin America into a direction that'll be far more positive for them and for us now are they gonna solve the migrant crisis the real linchpin and wall that is Mexico New Mexico is not a small country that's just been wracked by socialism for a long time and and had very it has very little in there in terms of resources I don't know if I'll Salvador could stop the migrant crisis even if it wanted to they just don't have state resources to throw at this and remember magnet its age they got a traverse it's like a two hour car ride to get out of El Salvador and Guatemala for most of the folks there it's a thousand miles across Mexico to get the US Mexico border so there's a lot more room for Mexico to do something about this than there is for all Salvador or world for Guatemala first and then for us all the door and you know what I'm on that for Mexico so I do think that this is a eight a turning point in our relationship with the reason I don't know if it'll be permanent along last but there has been a change in an attitude mixing up still being a little because they have a little more leverage they know there's a large Mexican the asper community United States they know that there's a lot of border trade there there's a lot more leverage the Mexican government but trump's got leverage juice so and this this though I just want to share these much that could you know on today show and if you have any other questions or any other thoughts about this by all means email me or or some in a Facebook message but it was out well worth it to have this experience of seeing and diplomacy in action this way and I really enjoyed it I want to thank the team that brought me out there too I thank sectors the pump although we're not done because I got a pump Hey interview coming up and then we'll get in the news the day and I don't think I haven't thought about the squad folks and trump and fighting with them until we're gonna dig in because that's so guess what they're still gonna be fighting with trump tomorrow I I assure you that's not going away there's still going to be all kinds of trump is a racist tomorrow I thought today we spend more time on the trip foreign policy we don't do it a Ron I know they seize this British how this this British ship people are very concerned this it would just expect this continued this behavior from Iran for for a while but they actually don't have if we're gonna talk before policy I felt like I should mention this the Iranians don't have the time here time is not on their side their economy is imploding are they are feeling the pain grabbing a ship you're there that's just optics that's just tryna to quiet their critics internally and trying to see if they can rattle us and our European allies and create divisions and separation grabbing a ship here there is not gonna get the Iranians are the buying the right now remember the fundamental mistake the Obama administration made was the Iranians are under so much pressure let's bail them out now and give them a life line of a deal that's way too favorable for them that was the mistake they made this administration will not do that we get the Pompeii we need you to talk about a moment then I've got was it this this woman who made a race hoax charge about being a Lima too many items and all this I'll get into that we had young grill drive got I've got a fantastic show no more Latin America that we usually do is well least south of Mexico but I'm just there's a figure one out we'll be right back the.

"There, and they learn how to use it really quickly and those have been wildly successful. Tens of thousands of animals moved across those crossing structures. Is there an element of your work where you interface with historians who are familiar with oral tradition. To try to piece together loss bits of knowledge about animal movements. We've we've been interested in doing that. And especially and allied interstate eighty project where we're trying to. You know, try we can't use sort of we we can call her the animals today. But those animals can't show us Lou. Right. So we're trying to get a hold of old timers who might have known where you know, where some of those movements were. We've also done we've done some work here on the wind river reservation and have done some interviews with tribal elders. Trying to understand what they knew about historical migrations. And as you can imagine it's it's challenging, I guess we don't have any examples yet where and I'd love to add love to to stumble upon this one. Yeah. With Pompey's pillar lawn the tone river east of billings, Montana. No, people would always run into stuff there. But you go look at it. Make sense fuel is run into Elkin bison there because the north side of the river, just giant sandstone bluffs. And there's a creek comes down that forms a pass through the bluffs. And it was like people having shootouts their people hunting their people get their under described like as far as I can see you to the right and the left, and even let's does not there's still they're not doing it now. But it's like very definite. But it's funny because you go there, and look I can totally see it. Right, right. It's almost it's reflected again. And again in the journals of people who traveled through to this is like the spot, right, right? Yeah. And so what what would be nice would be to uncover some of that information, which points to a historical corridor that the week, and then work can increase our confidence in knowing that that's the right place to restore and a related example is at this that path of the pronghorns where where that overpass was built is that the is a place called trappers point, which was a historical rendezvous site. Oh, and and also when they wide and that highway. Two thousand eight thousand nine I think now earlier in that they anyways they they had to do an archaeological survey and they discovered a pronghorns kill site. You kidding me? I'm not and and what was unique. So they basically.
