85 in the British pound a dollar 30 46 That is a Bloomberg business flash Bloomberg markets continues now with a host of characters including Matt Miller Paul Sweeney and all of our news forces out in the streets of New York City and Brooklyn Greg Jarrett thank you so much We appreciate that Michael Barr joins us here on a Bloomberg interactive broker studio Michael I'm just looking at the screens but we've got a bank of screens up here I just see lots and lots of flashing lights I see a C of first responders FDNY NYPD EMT New York knows how to do this What's the latest Like you said a host of police presence We have at least 13 people who were heard at least 5 hit by gunshots in the subway stations along the north end train line in Brooklyn this morning A manhunt is reportedly underway for the gunman He was described according to several reports according to ABC 7 as wearing a gas mask and an orange construction vest Now there were also reports that as many as four packages initially were deemed suspicious but according to the NYPD they were later determined to be unfounded according to these reports Again so far no arrests have been made mayor Eric Adams who has COVID he is monitoring the situation but he can not respond again because of his diagnosis but he is keeping up on the situation Governor Kathy hochul said she has also been briefed on what's going on in Brooklyn So the latest we have right now 13 heard at least 5 shot I want to point out just quickly something that is probably obvious to most but worth saying he's the suspect is very unlikely to still be wearing a gas mask in an orange vest So if that's all we know about him in terms of a description it's really not helpful Do we know if there were other suspects or is this thought to be the work of one man or a group of people So far we have just one person and now we're going by reports of what we are seeing from outlets all around and coming in that the suspect is described as a black male 5 foot 5 about a 175 pounds That's as much as we have in your exactly right Matt it's going to be pretty useless to say he was wearing a mask because he probably has taken that gas mask off and the vest as well So this is where we are right now So far again no fatalities That's amazing but there's so many cameras around the city My guess would be that there are probably some footage That's what the police may be reviewing now around and in the subway station itself so perhaps that could be a hit Yeah I'll tell you the cameras aren't as easy to access as you would think It's not like London where there's a CCTV network That security forces have a handle on what we have here is kind of a hodgepodge of cameras on storefronts cameras at residential buildings some of them are working Many of them are not and police will have to do a lot of work in order to get that footage Now clearly we've got the officers on the ground to do that As Paul said we have a bank of screens in front of us We're looking live at the scene right now And there are at least I'm going to say 15 first responder vehicles in our field of view and probably many others that we can not see New York police department New York fire department are clearly there and you're going to probably expect federal agencies to be on the scene soon as well Yeah absolutely The EMT folks are some video footage of EMT folks dealing with some of the wounded people First responders in New York were used to seeing our first responders on the scene very quickly and helping out fellow New Yorkers So again the New York police FDNY the EMTs day are trained in this of course Right now let's go to Bloomberg's Patricia Herta She covers Manhattan federal courthouse for Bloomberg news Patricia what's the latest that you know of the situation right now I'm not sure we have Patricia She was on the ground Do we have Patricia tano No it doesn't look like we've got it right now but we will try and get her on the line as soon as possible Just to recap for you right now several people were shot as Michael Barr was saying reports that 13 people have been injured and 5 people have been hit with gunshot wounded in a possible explosion as well inside a subway station in sunset park Brooklyn So authorities initially responded to the scene because of billowing smoke at about 8 30 a.m. at the 36th street station I want to get this right so everyone knows the 36th street station It serves the D the N and the R lines of the New York City subway Once inside first responders encountered multiple people shot and at least according to an FDNY spokesperson undetonated devices Now we've since heard reports that there are no more undetonated devices at the scene I don't know if that means they've moved them out or that the initial report was wrong but we've got Patricia or I guess on the line now Patricia what do we know any updates Well there's some preliminary reports that apparently one indication is that around 8 45 one of the subway trains was pulling into the 24th street station it's an NR train And the doors open and someone throughout what was like a smoke bomb onto the tracks or onto the train and started shooting And then people ran off the train and then the subway continued to 36th street where this incident where people poured out of the train and were injured Unclear if there was undetonated bombs found on the train or in the subway station but they're still sorting this out So Patricia just seems that I guess the reporting we have now is one suspect and the suspect was described as wearing a perhaps a construction vest and a gas mask Anything new on the suspect are we hearing No it seems like it's still being sorted out It seems to be event chaotic situation including trying to evacuate the people that were injured We understand that or at least 13 people were injured and 5 were shot on clear how the injured people where they were injured in some kind of explosion or some other event Yeah you can imagine if a train was filled with smoke and everybody wanted to exit at the same time Injuries are likely just in the stampede we don't know though if anyone was killed yet Is that right Patricia Yeah we are not hearing yet of any fatalities but apparently the situation on the platform was chaotic and unclear how seriously injured those that people were that were shot I mean there's images and people are tweeting out photographs of people with apparently look like gunshot wounds to their legs and into the torso line on the subway platform and people scurrying off the train and the chaos Patricia what's the status of just the subway system in general Is it just that line that is shut down or do we have more shutdowns It seems like it's cascading now affecting all the other stations And that's a major traffic artery for subway systems which occurred during morning rush hour And the other system rest of the system seems to be now impacted and slowing down Yeah you could imagine that they would want to even pause the entire system while they make sure I mean I ride the end of the hour every day between Bloomberg headquarters and Penn station and it is a it's a heavily travel line It's a popular line and it's Manhattan Brooklyn queens So it's really one of the key lines here And as Caleb Melbourne has been reporting the station.
