Breonna Taylor settlement is among largest payouts linked to a police shooting

"Gorman. If you wanna listen to it. Let's start with the settlements in Louisville with Briana Taylor's family a couple different things to run through of the next few minutes. Earlier this week, the Louisville metro government announced a $12 million settlement package with family of Briana Taylor. Of course, was 26 year old black woman who was shot in her own home by police officers serving a no knock warrant in March. The settlement also includes a Siri's of police reforms. Some of the reforms are changes to the approval process for an execution of search warrants. The hiring of social workers at the department a commitment to increase drug and alcohol testing of officers involved in any shooting, encouraging officers to perform at least two paid hours a week of community service in the communities they serve. And housing credits for officers toe live in certain low income parts of the city. And Felix, You took a look at the settlement. What stood out to you? Well, I think two things one. It was a record breaking settlement in and of itself. The $12 million payout. Briana Taylor's family's attorney, Benjamin Crump, represents George Floyd's family and multiple others in these situations, he said. It himself is the most money it's ever been paid for. A police involved shooting involving anyone, so that's significant itself. But Briana Taylor's mother, I said I think said it best. This is just the beginning the reform package they put together that was interesting that they the mirror who's got a vote of no confidence the other night. Apparently, you know, insisted that that was going to be part of the settlement agreement from the day one, which was good because they announced it together. It's not just about the money, but it's about the reform, which in one of these cases That's what is the driving factor, not necessarily the money. So you mentioned the key ones that are involved in this. It's interesting because we talked about the social worker aspect of Policing before because of a policy that sheriff Bob Altieri put in place here in Pinellas County, where he wanted social workers to go out to these mental health calls first on their own, try and de escalate them. And then if there's trouble than calling the police, which was You and I both thought that was a bad idea in this particular reform. Does that frothy area was that Holloway? That help earlier think that was. Yeah, I think it was cheap and also got a theory. But it's a same Pete initiative. So anyway, sorry about that. But in anyone what they will do in this case is social workers will go with The police officers on these calls or meet them out at the call, not endanger themselves. So it's kind of being that's what we thought should happen is that that's the more responsible, appropriate way to do it rather than just sending people out on their own. And then you know if the situation escalates. You got a problem on your hands. Yeah, exactly. Do you don't have time to wait for an officer to show up or say like, Hey, wait around the corner while I go talk to this person suicidal and walked in the bathroom of the gun. You know, and then ends up ends up shooting an unarmed social worker, and the other thing That's interesting is that we talked about the no knock warrants. They enacted a law in Louisville already doing away with down, But then they went one step further. Just like now, this is sheriff quality areas policy, which was the more hierarchy in terms of getting the warrant. So The way it used to work here in Fort is like you would have the detective's whether it's robbery homicide. Narcotics. Those are the ones that usually get the most warrants. They would review the case they would take their warrant to the state attorney's office. State attorney would review it and then they would be the ones to say Okay, you can go ahead and go to a judge. Well, what they done in Louisville and Penelas is that they built in another law of letter layer. Inside the department level, so supervisors will have to sign off on the warrants before they can Goth to get approval from prosecutors or the judges or accountability exactly within the department, So you don't have Because we've read the the warrants and the stories about what happened in Briana Taylor's case, and they were so thin in the connections they were trying to make Tio, the main suspect. They've lived on the other side of town, and the tenuous nature of it was the fact that she paid this guy's phone bill was an ex boyfriend of hers and also had his shoes delivered an Amazon package delivered and they immediately made the jump that that was somehow Drug trafficking activities, so that should be reviewed at a much higher level, and that's something I think I encourage. I think you'll see a lot more departments doing that. And like I said Florida, we have that additional level of the prosecutors by think it should go down one level more in order for the police involved to say, like hold on a second. Let's review this before. You go to a prosecutor with us because I got put into situations a lot of times where the detectives would get a thumbs down from a prosecutor on the case, and then they call another prosecutor in the prosecutor would say, Oh, no, This is perfectly fine. And so you have those sites of mixed messaging on stuff and that could get very dicey because not only if you go from one prosecutor, another And for example, I said, No, you don't have enough for a warrant, And then they go to another prosecutor that they're friends with. And they say, you know, they can approve the warrant that tire up to me, then you know, on Well at that point, So that's the thing the problem that they have with that so interesting reforms that they're going to do and the one I like the most. I think the most interesting is giving them the housing credits to move into. The neighborhoods that they are patrolling. So I want to see the follow up on that to see

US bans WeChat, TikTok from app stores, threatens shutdowns

"I A wrap up of the big economic stories of the week and let's just dive on in. Shall we on his Watson is with the New York Times Catherine Reimpell is at the Washington Post to. Hey There So. Let's actually start you heard at the top of this conversation about TIKTOK. And we chat what do we think are the potential ripple effects culturally economically and otherwise of something like this I'll start with that. I'm GonNa Picture Yeah of course of course I've been writing about this today. So this is the unprecedented ban on some really popular services in. So I think the potential ripple effects are really interesting. Know first of all these APPs will the government isn't going to go out police, people and make them delete the apps from their phones but these APPs will start to degrade for users here in the United States functionality will get weaker and you know so that will affect people of people's us There's questions about whether there will be Chinese retaliation at China already blocks of American services like twitter and facebook. But there are other things that the Chinese government could do to penalize American companies I think it raises questions that whether we'll see more bands like this on other Chinese companies, Alibaba. For example, and then Wesley just taking a big picture view we seem to be headed toward a situation in which what we think of as the global Internet is breaking down into a lot of different Internet's with different roles for the US for China for Europe and for a long time, we thought about the internet breath down borders, connecting people around the world. But actually now, it kind of seems to be fracturing both do the nationalism and security fears. Catherine I think that's you know. Moving on from just these two APPs in this conversation, this is this is a big precedent to set in some ways. It's the US government taking a stance very similar to the Chinese government, right? Saying these are the kinds of businesses that will be allowed to operate here. How does that send me look for the Global Economy Yeah Well there are a number of complications that could arise from this right I mean you have First Amendment legal challenges already arising here within the United States you have the risk of businesses not being able to conduct their normal operations, wherever they are, and so their businesses already complained obviously about having to deal with different regulatory regimes Once they cross borders even if they are a company that digital. Company. For example, that does not operate strictly within the fiscal borders of any one country this is this is going to complicate their lives much more. And you could imagine that is on points out there could be further retaliation that just adds even more uncertainty for businesses as they're trying to. figure out how to operate within China within the United States stay on the right side of the law avoid offending. Any minder as it might turn him. I mean that said on a are these concerns real even if the data collection part is overblown it, there's no question that we chat and take talk in some ways. Can represent the viewpoint. Of the Chinese. Government. Right. Yeah I think when it comes to data collection you know cybersecurity experts, kind of debating how much of a risk there is i. mean. It certainly does could give the Chinese government access to some data and Chinese laws require that you know Chinese individuals Chinese companies submit that data to the Chinese government if asked. So part of the issue is a Chinese laws on that subject but there a lot of mobile services that collect a lot of data you know about Americans. That we haven't maybe thought about systematically the other argue the other argument here though is about the Chinese. Government's ability to censor put out propaganda and I think when you look at, we had it is clear that it is a conduit for for censorship in for propaganda it's also vitally important a communication system for the global Chinese diaspora but the Chinese government definitely has a say in shaping what reality like on that platform.

Social media censorship in Egypt targets women on TikTok

"Has its sights on tick talk. It's cracking down on users arresting and charging a group of women with a range of tic tac enabled crimes from harming family values to inciting prostitution. Reporter Jod reporter Dad, Kaleel has our story. At least nine women have been arrested for their tic tac videos. But if you look through their accounts, it's hard to see why. And focus most ofit here. There's Henning has, um, talking about the story of Venus and Adonis and Adela doing what social Media influencers do Giveaway iPhones life living room doing, But mostly the accounts of the Egyptian women who's been arrested and jailed are full of dancing to Arabic pop songs in that tic tac style feet, planted emoting with your eyebrows and gesticulating. What they're doing is basically what everyone as 1000 social media, just singing and dancing and Andi thing and nothing as if you would dance. In Egyptian wedding. For example, some of Husaini is with the International Service for Human Rights based in Geneva, Switzerland. She says. What distinguishes this group of Egyptians is that they're from working class or middle class backgrounds and that their women or girls, you have social media influencers who come for a teeth, backgrounds or upper middle class or rich classes and injured who would post the same type of content. But would not be targeted because that is sort of permitted within their social class. But why these women are working class women they and they have stepped out of what is permitted for them because they were dancing and singing on tech talk. They were charged under a cyber crime law passed in 2018 Yes, Mean Omar, A researcher at the top here Institute for Middle East Policy in Washington, says that the law is vague when it comes to defining what's legal. And what isn't. It was written using very broad terms that could be very widely interpreted and criminalizing a lot of acts that are Originally considered as personal freedom. Looking at it. You would see that anything you might post on social media. Anything that you may use, the Internet could be criminalized under this very wide umbrella. Egypt cybercrime laws, part of a larger effort by the government to increase surveillance of online activities as Tic TAC became more popular during the pandemic. Prosecutors started looking there too, says Omar. The state is simply arresting whoever says anything that criticizes its policy its laws. It's practices, even if it's just joking. It's not even allowed. But this isn't just about political dissent. Yes, mean Omar points. In the case of mental Abdel Aziz, a 17 year old. One day men made a live video on Facebook. She had her face awfully bruised, and she was stating that she was raped. And she was asking for help. The police asked me to come in. When she did, Omar says they looked at her tech talk account and decided she was inciting debauchery and harming family values in Egypt. Over the summer, There was a series of rape and sexual assault accusations by Egyptian women. They got a lot of attention. One case was against a group of well connected men. Women in Egypt were shocked but not surprised by what they were seeing online, says someone who's Amy in Egypt. Sexual violence on violence in this woman is systematic is part ofthe daily life off of women and to be sexually harass women are often discouraged from reporting sexual harassment in Egypt. So when prosecutors started investigating the accused in that high profile case, it looked like a real progress. The state run National Council for Women even encourage victims and witnesses to come forward. Oh, yes mean, Omar says it did not go well. Somehow, the prosecution decided to a charge the witnesses once again. Egyptian authorities looked at women's social media accounts and then investigated the women for promoting homosexuality, drug use, inciting debauchery and publishing false news. Omar says one of the witnesses who was arrested is an American citizen. All these information were used against them and then pro state media how let's wait in. Husseini says that when they profile the women in the TIC tac case, the message was clear. You have the Egyptian me they're basically, you know, really sensational headlines, Putting the photos off the women Not not not blurred using, you know, focus that have sex it Ian, for example, while using their names, publishing the investigations that are supposed to be confidential. Social media has played an important role in Egyptian politics. In 2011 crowds toppled the regime of military dictator Hosni Mubarak. That uprising was in part organized online with Twitter and Facebook. In 2018, the former Army general and current President, Abdel Fattah el Sisi swore he would maintain stability in Egypt must You said whatever happened in 2011 is never going to happen again. Samir Shehadeh of the University of Oklahoma, says Egypt's military backed regime is wary of the implications of anything posted online, even if its just dancing I think there has been heightened paranoia as a result of hysteria, in fact, by subsequent regimes, particularly the current regime, the Sisi regime About the possible political consequences of social media. And there's a tremendous amount of policing a Facebook and other types of social media and now tic tac. Although this is not apparently an overtly political, I think that they certainly have those kinds of concerns in the back of their mind as well. Of the nine women, Four have been convicted and three have appeals in October. Menon Abdelaziz, the 17 year old, who called for help online was just released from detainment Wednesday and is being dismissed with no charges. For the world. I'm Jagga Khalil.

Literal Jock Sniffer - Season 3, Episode 4 - burst 1

"Question. How did he do? Okay. So here's the thing about Joe Brown. This is why I think you like him so much. Oh, it's a really great quarterback that just plays hockey team. So he's like your deck Prescott your a bitch. I thought you were like the light bulb in my head went off last night when I was watching it. I was like, well, he's a good little quarterback like Dak Prescott. He just plays for no wonder Jasmine likes them so much. By the way, I have you know you Optimus Prime Don the word shity so it cut out on you said shity team. That's all right. I show you going to say that we were going to like look we could be an item now. I'm just disappointed. Oh, I'm sorry. Now he's to you guys wouldn't match very well. He's back to blonde hair doughy eyed, you know, he still has his dreams and happiness. I was just that his way too innocent for you. You know, you just strip him of all of it off. I would fare. I tend to do this with all men though. Let's be real I tend to slowly take away their hopes dreams, you know their desk for Life their happiness any kind of happiness life. It's it's what I do to all the men that are in my life. Okay, so so that's your analysis which fuck off so that's no that's my analysis regards to jobber. Okay, my analysis in regards to the Browns. All right. Here's the thing about the Browns obj less. Always he had headlines Amy. Okay. This team has a boss ass offense page. There is no reason why they shouldn't be scoring touchdowns all the fucking time. I mean think about the players that they have Nick Chubb Fremont who both went off last night Jarvis Landry. I mean you couldn't get you can get that is a fantasy leagues dream right here, right? Yep. There is no reason why this team shouldn't be amazing because you know what their defense is really cool. Good to this team should be really competitive and making the playoffs and they're not understand now Grandma, who knows what's going to happen tell you what happened last night watching this game Baker Mayfield just he changed into a different person. Like when he like a human in a good way in a good way when he came off the field. He didn't go and sit down on the bench. He stood on the sidelines and watched his defense playing and then he I mean he rallied those guys. He was not going down to Joe burrow. I mean, you could totally he's like, there's no fucking way. This guy's going to show me up and there's no way I'm losing to the fucking bangles and you know what he totally carried his team. He really truly did stepped up it was offensive. Now if they can do that every single weekend this team is really like it has all the weapons that it takes to be a fantastic team which made me. Made me Ponder the fact that there's some teams that you just expect to lose and then there's some teams that you expect to win like the team's you expect to when you expect the steel real attacks right now. You expect the Cal you expect to win. You don't expect the Lions or the Bangles or the Browns. I mean the low-hanging fruit, you know, you don't expect those teams to win. So when they have when they have rosters long, the Browns have their own turning into a team that you they should be winning with what they have. So it sounds to me that the Browns are basically like if you're looking at it from a fantasy league point, it's the guy in league who basically cheese his way to get the best team because everybody else is internet either sucked or they were on auto draft or they forgot there was a draft right? That's the guy in the if you're equating it to a fantasy team roster birth. Okay. Number one. I liked it. You know I prematurely said shut up about the Cowboys cuz I thought you were going to say that you expect them to lose and I like that you're saying that you expect them to win because that's what you do you absolutely suck. Oh you that's what we do problem. That's where we are a we are an elite Lord team. Anyway, that's what you're going with I am. Well, I don't know the baker Mayfield is still a shitstain to me so good for him rallying his team. He's still a shitstain. I do love his Progressive commercials their home like the latest one. Yes. They are the latest one where he's like. Oh, it's getting ready to rain. Help me cover the furniture. And two guys like you mean the stance he's really good in those commercials. If you could only be as good a quarter as he is in those commercials. We would be set the dog pound would be set. Well, we are you a dog pound or now. I mean, I you know, I have a soft spot for the Browns just cuz they always lose. And ever since that movie came out draft day with Kevin Costner yet. Oh, I'm out. I'm done with you. done with you Amy. Your brown spot is showing. I know I know you know, I just I'm weird that way I don't understand it. Either it is I don't either try to figure you out every day and I just you know, I do too and since I'm like, oh I get myself today and then sometimes I'm like now he's nope don't understand myself today, but that's okay. That's most of us as well. Amy. So rest assured you're not in Company by yourself. I think it is twenty-twenty it is. Okay. Well that's sad because now Joe burrow Hollow be his name Falls 200 and two. Yeah, it does and but you know what this guy he's he's a good quarterback. He is is there he should be in his helmet I think time to get mr. Guys. Sometimes he tries to carry his offense which isn't great because then he gets pummeled by pencil like he got pummeled last night several times. Well, you sure. Why does LSU brain sure what he's trying to win? And I totally get it. But at the same time he needs careful because you know, oh, he's a starting quarterback in the NFL. Well getting them know and you just see a lot of what he was doing at LSU that worked and I think you know like every rookie has this learning curve right where you come out transition from college to the big leagues and it's like, oh, okay, it's funny cuz I was like really different style of football right? I said to Bruce last night. I'm like, surprised that they just threw this guy in the deep end. I mean they just started. Oh totally, I mean, they didn't granted he dangles. What else do they have? I'm. That's the problem. They don't have anything else but you know like places in my where to get backing up Fitzpatrick that makes sense. It makes sense for him to kind of, you know way into the NFL same thing with Dwayne Haskins, you know, he he was back up for a while until he kind of learned his name. Yeah, now Joe girl, man. They just threw him in the deep and they're like here you go, bro, you go bu. Yeah. Well, you know what gotta he is trying I mean, he's playing his ass off out there. No he is but he is and that's why I'm like super team Joe burrow like we gotta do this man. Like I'm telling you. It's the stogie. We'll do it get this guy that mean that you're a Bengals fan know how fucking no. No, I like. Oh bji in a Browns fan. I like Joe burrow Ina Bengals fan, you know, I will always bleed silver and blue Amy. That's the only color I would leave home. Anyway, let's move on to the Chiefs. Okay, love us and Pat Mahomes you love some Andy Reid do that cheaper mofo back, right? So Andy Reid's big old windshield mask that he had on. When was it last week? I can't remember. Yeah. We're only in week to segregated windshield wipers. Yeah, so people were like what the hell and so like it was fogging up. You couldn't see shit, but this may be a thing. This may be a thing coming to a coach near you because off on the first Sunday of the NFL season when this happened several coaches were seen either one not wearing masks or to not wearing them properly because the mask police were out and the league is not going to stand for that. It's currently vice president of football operations. Troy Vincent issued a memo this week saying protocol requires all individuals with bench area access including coaches and members of the club medical staff to wear face coverings at all times failure to adhere this requirement will result in accountability measures being imposed against offending individuals and or clubs. However, Amy, there is no word on what those accountability measures will be so that to me that phrase is what kind of sticks out to me. What does that mean? do you do find them? Probably I mean you can look dead. Here's the thing. They're coaching on the sidelines of talking into Mike's they have to be able bird they have to be able understood. It's really hard for all of the to happen on your face plus all these guys are around each other all the time. They're all you know, I practiced together around the field. They're hitting each other all in each other's faces, you know, I mean and how many people have tested positive since the start of season one? Yeah. They did a very good 2700 players so very good job with with that right off because like you said, they've been implementing measures. They've been following the rules, you know, they've been testing a lot, you know, we got into this, you know leading into this actual season. Jeez, how many coronavirus updates that we talked about on this podcast about hey, this is what the League's doing. This is what they're making them do kind of thing. So something is clearly working. It's really great to see that that's positive news that you know that they're only seeing that wage. Chat, I think I that they should I really think they should go with a handy read mask to be quite honest can still see the coaches face. The microphone can kind of be up underneath it. So they may be able to understand what the coaches saying and and you're shielded. You know, when somebody comes up to your face, you know, I mean, think that that's fine but having to wear them like when it's just, you know covering your face in your nose again, like it's hard for me to understand people when they're wearing a mask and talking to me. Yes, I mean, so imagine imagine being on the field the quarterback coaches saying the guys in booth coordinators up in the booth are trying to understand what the guys on the field coordinators on the field are trying to say, I mean, it's just it's a it's crazy. So it's a shitshow you gotta be able to walk. You gotta be able to your job. I would take that looking like I've got the windshield of a Camry in front of my face the whole time vs Lee having something on my mouth cuz that's frustrating me. Yeah. Give me the telephone number. Windshield all day long over the you know, suffocating face masks which by the way speaking of Tesla. Did you see that their reports of some them being janky like getting like parts that were like really cheap shity on some of the Tesla's that were falling apart marvelous. I know so yet twenty-twenty doesn't happen. Just wanted to put that in there for you. All right coming up next in offsides, you know fall like we said is upon us. Although you wouldn't know here in Texas. It's still like an anus outside but here's something for your home that will make it fall feel less anus e okay Mom handles some new ones that are coming out and they're actually already out and we'll explain to you with those candles our next. All right, let's get into offsides and we've got some candles to tell you about so Amy, yeah, you know football's back. So if you want to get a little piece so that game day experience at home along with fall. This might work. Okay. I know you love candles. There's a company that's owned by Anheuser-Busch call Babe wine. They just created three football scented candles one smells like an artificial turf field. Okay one smells like a Nachos not bad and one

Illegal Raves Fill 'Cultural Void' in Britain Amidst Coronavirus

"The night time economy has been hit hard by the pandemic nightclubs have been forced to close putting deejays and promoters out of. There that just because the clubs are closed, doesn't mean the party's destroyed. In Britain legal raves are enjoying something of a revival. Frankly right throughout Britain for the economist, the met police has recorded more than thousand raves in the last few months and many people are saying this is kind of a throwback to the late eighty s and early ninety s back. Then illegal acid house parties started happening all over the country. What are these raves actually like the traditional stereotype, his house techno music taking place in an abandoned warehouse or something things are a bit different. Now over the summer at least they've tended to happen in big outdoor spaces, kind of in the middle of nowhere, and the kind of music really varies depending on the event to so now do still play House and techno, but also are and be drum and bass a few weeks ago. There was a big rave in a tiny Welsh village called Babylon three and a half thousand people turned up but it's really all because of the closure of nightclubs. Choose to the pandemic lockdown as revive that spirit of acid house and really hard and Ravers who have nowhere else to go have turned to illegal parties again, and he's the revival of raving entirely result of the pandemic largely. But even before the pandemic rates for making a bit of a comeback covid of accelerated that trend, the revival was a result of expensive rents in big cities, which made it harder for nightclubs on cheap nights and also precarious operating licenses to big venues of how to pass that cost onto clubbers entry to print works, which is a big factory turned club in southeast London. Forty pounds just for a night and drugs and much less tolerated to oversee an illegal rave while they're much cheaper because have to deal with licensing and venue costs, and also there are no rules because it's illegal he can do whatever you like these ours you say illegal raves. So how the authorities cracking down on them authorities are having a really hard time trying to stop them because they will happening at such a low level. It wasn't too much for problem of there being A. Resurgence. Now, the approach, the the police and the government seems to be taking is deterrent in recent weeks new finds of being introduced by the government of up to ten thousand pounds for the organizers of these parties. But the big fines aren't having that much of an effect because it's very difficult to work out who's organizing them in the first place and that's because they're so secretive locations are often kept quiet until the last minute and even then details only shared with a ten dis. Through. Private channels like what's happened instagram messages, which is actually quite similar to the nineteen eighty s and ninety s when people would have to phone number from a phone box to find out where a policy was happening all the legal alternatives for UK Ravens than there aren't really at the moment. So in recent weeks, some music events have started up again but much more tame that kind of socially distance concerts happening in traditional venues, some promoters have tried to organize legal socially distance raves. I spoke to one organizer who said he put on the first, which is very early lockdown. He had seven hundred and fifty people applies account but could only let in forty people even then the police still turned up and try to shut it down until it was explained that it was going on legally this week actually new restrictions which limit social gatherings are the indoor or outdoors to six people have come in making it even more difficult to organize one of these events safely and legally. Six people doesn't sound like much of a rave. Is there a safe way to do this independent nick? Honestly not really it's obviously very hard socially distant set arrive. There have been the helping of criticism within the music industry of so-called Plague Raves in countries where venues have reopened as they haven't in Britain yet nightclubs have been criticized on any kind of events at all contributing to spikes in resurgences in the virus. One case of this is in south, Korea which did. Very well, it containing the virus. But when things thought reopened a number of cases with trace back to to some nightclubs in Seoul and that led to a huge amount of criticism within the press and in society as well. Just dougherty runs legal acid house parties in London, and he's one of the many deejays who calling people out for throwing playgroups

Banksy loses EU trademark fight with greeting card company

"Bad news for everyone's favorite little spray painting. "It's the device that will no longer hold a cable. You can't buy new cable. You can't just plug a new thing in. It's the whole device. That is now going to be loose and not hold logically logically to me that means that as soon as that spring wears out and as soon as the court goes bad you have to basically throw away the whole device. That's more carbon footprints more e-waste than throwing away a cable. I'm much more content throwing away a small cable then a whole phone just because a port goes bad. Yeah and you can imagine how much more difficult recycling a phone when be than a cable as like like if you tried to recycle both things. Yeah so I think apple understandably they push for lightning because there was no USB ABC back then they had a good incentive and good intent with this but they had a bad design and now they're trying to defend it and I think that is just the worst possible strategy in this case apple really should just give up on this one take the loss and move everything to USB see. They've removed a couple lie pads there. They've moved on their laptops. They're just take the hit and move phones. It is really funny that like now. Their phones are incompatible with their laptops yup and like now they have IOS devices on with both sports it. They have their ipad pros on the type C and everything else on lightning. It's just it's really if any it's like apple is still in that stage that most of the tech industry was three years ago when we were in this weird transition stage when some devices vices had that in some didn't and they've just stuck there they stuck themselves. They're so yeah there's going to be some I'm sure some one of the silliest controversies and unfortunately I think like I said earlier. I don't think they're taking very seriously the issue that USB standards are really anything but standards at this point but overall this will at least be a good move in something. That's kind of a right direction so Do you want to take the next one. Sure we'll just throw gills script out the window. Yeah it's fine it's it's like Like parts of the Caribbean where they're just guidelines. They're not rules but yeah so in this latest episode of the drama that keeps going on and on a while we representative in an interview was saying that while I wanted to get rid of all its dependence on. US companies which is understandable and and in the interview they actually said wow I would not return google services directly even if Google allowed them or if that political pressure they're under from the. US government went away overnight and he also talked about how the while a mobile services which is sort of their version of Google play services they already replaced twenty four out of six. API's that they deem essential. So I assume that stuff like locations and all that stuff that the place Ariza's are usually responsible for and they actually have three billion dollars in four thousand developers on staff for implementing that which again like it's just this hallway situation really rings How difficult now it is to pry google away from android where Google play services has become more and more critical part of the Os S.? And when you take it out you're left with the brick especially the he also talked about how they're inviting. US applications to publish on their APP store but anyway anyway so that that was the whole thing that made the rounds and then while I later stated it sort of kind of backpedaled but not really. They mentioned that they still preferred for to use a quote in open android quote which is actually what they wouldn't be using with Google services but let's ignore that point but that would be their first choice voice to use Google stuff. But they're continuing down this road. which again makes sense because it could very easily lose all their access to? US companies again. Dan and it doesn't really make sense to try to rely on that. Yeah so it. It is very interesting to see while we take the fundamentals of android read but try to replace every Google aspect of it and I like using Lennox on my desktops. I have an interest in in open source software off where and this is kind of something that the open software community has been trying to do for a long time is make android completely open source android a viable platform Like I remember there was a project a longtime ago called replicant d member that I know I've heard the name okay. It was like open source android but no no Google services and they also tried to reverse engineer all the proprietary device Bob so it only worked on like six phones but it was. It was an interesting project. So it's it's interesting to see like can this problem be solved if you're one of the largest companies on her and it turns out seems so they're doing an okay job You know they're still selling phones like hotcakes in China because Google services were never a problem there and who knows maybe maybe even a few months I mean they might have something. Nothing comparable to All Google Services is they're they're slowly closing all the feature gaps like we talked about earlier. podcast how they're now working with Tom Tom to create a Google maps equivalent. So they're slowly checking every box. I think they'll eventually get there. Yeah I think this is. This is an obvious move. I don't think Alway Eh. I'm obviously they have a choice but I don't think it was a very good choice with. US politics the way that they are. It would be risky to keep relying on Google even if you know. They obviously haven't been relying on Google for the last several months but to go back to a reliance on Google would be you possibly very dangerous error-prone so I get it. I don't think that there really was much of a good choice here. And honestly honestly I think the loser in this situation is Google because now it's one less partner that's paying licensing fees. It's one less partner. That is a data this source. It's one less partner that they could've used as an entry point into China. These are all really big losing points for Google at the stage and and it's unfortunate but I don't know that there's much that could really be done about it. I do think it's interesting that they're making such an open invitation to all the various services services like facebook and others. Because this is this is sort of opening the flood gates and you know that there are a lot of developers who are going to be looking at alternatives. Because they don't don't like the play store pay structure. They don't like various things about how Google is handled itself so this could be a pretty big hit over. All the other thing I thought was interesting. Is this news that while way. Intense open a proxy corporation Europe. Maybe I'm wrong. I'm not sure but I as far as I'm aware the entity list doesn't just preclude direct trading with the company. I believe it precludes all trading with company even via proxy Roxy. I'm not totally sure but I thought that was kind of a no no. It'd be sort of like how Not Alway but The other company. I'll think of of it later. How they got in trouble for trading with Iran even though they weren't really doing it directly yet they were doing the issue was the US had had a trade ban with Iran? They had some sub company that was trading with Iran or selling Something like that but yeah anyway so. I'm not sure that they. A proxy company is a viable option. Here to totally avoid trouble but now I think the US government would see that as as just while we're trying to get around and this could actually make it worse because it is such an obvious attempt to get around it. Yeah especially since wally has sort of like continued to say. Hey it's innocent Hasn't really done anything wrong. There's just all these allegations of up security against it would probably ruin that argument if they were trying trying really hard to get around these roles so speaking of okay spending money so Andrew Police is live on twitch four times a week. "It is Wednesday the twenty ninth of January. Welcome alongside cody tunes. I'm Julius Long. And let's get right down to it so talking about foldable. Let's talk about that Galaxy Z.. Flip that has been making the room around in the past a couple of weeks. Is that clam. Shell folder. That Samsung's doing to effectively compete with Motorola's razor. We got some new pictures coming from Roland. On quantum from when future one of the many leakers in the circle of leakers around are part of the industry and well it looks interesting testing. You see them to go The gods fold right. Well that's pretty much fall into design here with the Z.. Flip design language as they say a straight line. Line short radius curves for the coroner's and that's pretty much it lots let the gloss glass supposedly. This is going to be The first phone to feature that foldable glass solution that is being made a big deal of and Other than the specs that we already have known abouts Where you can probably just look them up on ANDROID POLICE DOT COM? We have plenty of stories. Going on there We also have this our first look at the display itself Maxwell Balk of XTA whether those leakers said that there might be a point in there and by the looks of what we have seen in this material. It's Kinda there I can sort of see it which I don't know maybe a good thing maybe about thing these media renders. Don't really tell any sort of accurate source story That you can say and I believe cody. You mentioned the something about that display that one inch external display which was just like an led a single color led that blends blends in. Or what's supposed to be the story of that okay. So if you're looking at the pictures we have on the website a little ways down. There's a render of the back of the phone in shows US space that slightly off color and it's about the size of the camera module just slightly larger. It's random through it right. Yeah basically. It's well on the opposing side of the phone. But yeah and that's supposed to be a tiny little display for showing theoretically like notifications. I guess so like text message such coming in or something like that that way. You don't have to physically open the phone to see if the message came in or if you've got new notifications it's not really clear yet. What's going to hear on that display normally? But it's supposed to be always on or at least it'll support always on. I knew who knows if it'll may be turned off when you open up the phone or something like that but point is it will be a tiny external display which is helpful sore looks like the external led display that. My mom has on her old. LG Flip on that she still uses. It's kind of it's very cute. It blends in and it's thought Mason stuff kind of the contrast that we WANNA go through here at the fold Actually it's not really contrast. It's comparison raised vessels protective displaying love. Some tolerances We saw those. I wouldn't suspected to feel much different than the galaxy fall that I held because it felt agent When you are heading it's it's folded position? I feel like I will be the same. But for the flip. It's going to me for that Extended folded out position. That's GonNa feel like that not feeling and I think the Mo- more important things there will be with the razor specs wise. It's going to be a massacre. We're talking snapdragon. Five plus with gigs of Ram to the razor snap seven ten with six gigabytes ally that has to do with the design is designed timelines and when Motorola and Samsung basically just planned out their release schedules and when they acquired the parts or well Samsung is able to buy a whole ton of stuff at a massive scale so and partly because they produce a lot of qualcomm chipsets sets. They're able to steal of well not steal but you know quite a lot of stock pretty easily. So there's that you know I I'm getting jump in in a bit of a prediction on this and we have no inside knowledge on this at. I'm just kind of spitballing here. But my hunch is Motorola started development on the razor with hardware that's going to be in the razor and they never bothered to change it a so. I think that was beginning to end single development. I would bet much sooner. That Samsung started development probably on an earlier chipset and once they got the display work out out and a lot of the other details than they upgraded the chipset to the fifty five plus. Perhaps just a hunch I You never know. Obviously things like that are fairly fluid. But it would make sense and explain why they've got this device coming out with substantially better specs. And it's not necessarily plug and play here. You can't can't just put in you know taking a seven ten and putting eight fifty five. Plus because there are some parts redundancies and some advancements You know it's it's it's a different class of chipset so there are more features. That could be taken out and you know that stuff to the price. Because we've been hearing the talk that is going to be the under thousand dollar flagship. Foldable phone that people will use. It's going to be the thing that will revolutionize denies the form factor Max Buck. XTA says it's going to be an eighteen exclusive fourteen hundred dollars in which case my argument at this point is well. I mean if the difference is going to be that small he is the thing that Reisen has exclusive on the razor and that pretty much limits the audience on either side of things in the US because writer go to at and T. and get your Samsung flippy flippy or you could get your moto. And that's pretty much it no soup for the rest of us and kind of stock but if we were to say all other things in terms of access like if I could just buy it and use it on my carrier hundred dollars I would go for the more usable design and I personally think that razor design is more usable. I so we've had this conversation before I'm personally against the flip flip phone style because to me. It's okay in some instances but the moment you try to use it landscape you're going to be facing just the most awkward design. It's not going to be very friendly to us and landscape so to me. I Still WanNa go with something more. You're in the design of the galaxy. Poll yeah so it to me. Both of these phones are bad designs fair. That's fair in terms of the modern use cases. This is in the more multimedia rich activities that we would like to do on our smartphones. That's fair but I think from me I'm a more conservative Spartan user. I'd be able to get by just well enough with Watching videos on these things the manager of honey in your hand and flipping in one one making sure it doesn't fall out your hand Easley and feel like the razer designed with its More ambitious curves all say as opposed to straight lines lines in short curves of this Z.. Flip would be more familiar to me and also it's just the new. If if it does fall I would also be more comfortable with the resin. The exterior resin that the razor has opted to use the more. I hate saying expendable and that sort of context because it's a fifteen hundred dollar phone but I wouldn't want to you know. Use a glass exterior steer your phone flip phone and have to deal with the cracks edges if I were to drop it on concrete or something like that that would be no. It's not a good time and to that point. It's really notable win. Future apparently has been able to confirm that this is made of and I'm air quoting this. Ultra thin glass. Yeah we've been talking about that. Yeah I'm not sure if that means that this is substantially thinner than lasts already in phones owns or not but either way just hearing it said that way makes me think we're about to get back to seeing a lot of practice plays and at least yeah well not that. They're going to be a lot of this particular phone going out there but if any sort of damage comes to it I have my suspicions. This will not very durable. Will you go back to last week. when we had Max wind back on the show and he said that I think you said it otherwise it might be a tweet that I just haven't a pass by but that bat flexible glasses going to be made of three substrates to plastic and then the middle being Glass which you know might be thicker or it's something that I I I don't know but I wouldn't be surprised to see scratch fest going on much as the some of the Motorola phones that shadow shield plastic cover style. Yes Fun I forgot about that. Those those droid maxx phones. Were pretty pretty interesting but yeah yeah in any case. I think you will have a lot to say about about this when I mean I was unfolded unfold events that unpacked event is the happening in San Francisco February eleventh getting ever so closer and supposedly. This will go up for preorder on Valentine's Day so we can't wait can't wait that's a Satan. Yeah Yeah I assume somebody on the team. We'll be reviewing it and that ought to be interesting. I'm curious just what the opinions will end up being speaking of opinions and how many people have them right right. Hey that nice nice transition so If you enjoy reading android police and wow is this ever going to sound like an ad and a kind of basically is if you enjoy reading Andrew Police but don't don't really enjoy the ads then there's actually kind of an answer to this coming up and it's called scroll is actually live now. I shouldn't say coming up but Scroll is is one of those services that basically offers you a subscription fee to enjoy a bunch of different websites ad free or mostly ad free and will explain that in a second scrolled just launched this week and it supports over three hundred sites currently including Andrew Police box media sites G. O. Media. I'm not actually familiar with that name. That's the former Is Moto that I had a feeling. That's what it was going to build the whole deadspin thing going on. Yeah that's a fun. Also insider media and a bunch of others. We've seen a full list. The Nets a lot of big names and also hold hot of names that you would really only know if you're an enthusiast easiest.

"Partially because Motorola doesn't really make high in phones anymore orbit anyway And we don't know if this would be like a passive stylus like. LG has on its budget stilo phones or with this be like a fully active stylists similar to that Samsung has on their galaxy notes. And also you get from like a surface tablet so if it's the ladder sadder that could be really interesting to get on a mid range phone and also it remains to be seen if Motorola would build all the cool style a soffer features. It has like Samsung even has stuff. Where like you can clip a screen shot with the stylus and even record stuff all using the pen? And of course I I think last year they tried to add a couple more things to it. Where like you can take a picture by pressing the button on the STYLUS? I don't see on this one but like they could still awesome stuff like that. So it'd be interesting to see if Motorola has again. They haven't really done that and they're still not a whole lot of competition for phones with stylised it's really just the galaxy note and then LG's budget line at at least in the US. I don't I'm not sure if maybe there are other options in India and other regions like that yet. So have you ever used a phone with a active stylus because honestly I liked it on the galaxy note. I I was really happy with it. I didn't use it a lot but when I did to have reasons to use it it was great. I haven't I've only used it With an older surface tablets and a windows up I had a while back but yeah now when they when they work is really fun. Well and it's such a good thing in cold environments if you know if you're wearing gloves or you're it just in general like the cold causes your hand to be a little bit less Responsive with the screen a stylus is fantastic in situations like that It's also obviously is league. Good if you're just trying to do anything precision drawing anything like that. Yeah if you're playing bridge constructor yeah exactly. I'd like it to see Motorola do this. But at the same time. It's a big commitment to start doing software and features related to a stylus. So I'm not sure at. This is the company I expect to do. A good job on something. Like this Yeah I mean Motorola soffer features are usually okay. The problem is that they. They don't update their phones ever are when they do. It's very slow. I think only a handful of their phones on Android ten already and I know at at least one of those is like the early roll outs in Brazil. So you know it's going to be another couple months before that comes to the US. Yeah so one thing that I do notice from the picture is the stylist does not seem to have a button on it and it can just be an issue where is not showing but I I think if this was going to be a press render. They're they're going to include a button if there's a button so that to me is a little bit of a sign that this may may not be inactive Stylus. I would put money down. This is a passive stylist. I don't think they put inactive on a presumably budget on. Yeah it'd be cool if they would. I'd be very interested in that but I don't think they will. Yeah and obviously in order to in order to act of silence they would have to commit to including the digitize her herb getting the technology that they could include with the screen. Digitize that way you can actually use an active styles was with it and again this all seems like a lot for Motorola it just seems like Motorola's kind of out of that side of the business but you never know I mean it's it's interesting because this is something we wouldn't expect for Motorola Yep and yet again at Beatrice it AC- There's not a whole lot of competition so maybe they can bring something to the table and speaking of something cool how I was going to interject and say and another thing that we don't expect expect from Motorola is being live four times a week on twitch as he had replaced. PODCAST is but we can't do that without your support. "Little faster and obviously or for Stadia. This is going to be a much bigger deal or android devices. I think it's going to be. It'll be interesting it'll be helpful certainly but yeah probably not gonNA see like any immediate changes out of this. We're GONNA see stuff just happening down the road. Plus we're going to see like device exclusives So you know some device comes out with this and then they partner up with a game company and say hey. Can you release this on on our phone. And they're like yeah. We'll totally do that. That's about it Jeff yes some new. API's not not terribly exciting for the average person But it's it's still need to see this technology progressing end. Volkan is still volk in general is still pretty underutilized. I I think a lot of major games coming out especially on windows still used direct X. Because you've been the standard for twenty years or whatever so this it's very gradual. Slow slow moving but it's nice to see Lee's changes in of course Volkan is completely open standard and everything so there's a lot of companies and groups contributing to to make it better Including Google I would assume well so what are largely depends on is the game engines. People are using so. Yeah Yeah obviously obviously if somebody is pulling out unreal engine if unreal. Engine is currently focused on direct X. It runs direct x when when they've got Vulcan sport in there to replace it or as an alternate option. Whatever the case may be? That's when the switch over happens for most games and if we've learned learned anything from Bethesda it's that companies love to use their engine for as long as humanly possible without changing it very punch. Oh Wow oh almost brought tear to my eye on that one. I really wanted to like fall at seventy six. Yeah I really do I. Actually I had that conversation in real life. I was getting like a drink from starbucks and I happen to you wearing my vault boy shirt that I got at some point and someone asks me. Oh did you play all seventy six hours. IOS was real bad and they agreed and we had like this shared moment of of distaste for this game I had with this complete stranger. That's how terrible the experience variance. What's I haven't played it but I've yet to hear anyone say positive things? It's not good. It's not but fortunately produce a positive things about the Andrew Police Police podcast which happens to live on twitch four times a week But we honestly can't do that without your support and we would appreciate it if you could throw us a little bit of love in the form of subscriptions you can do that with the Andrew Police Channel on twitch twitch dot TV slash Andrew police as a subscriber you gain access to the Ryan Emoji where he is a slightly knee braided and showing copious amounts of joy. He's more than slightly in the back. You will also gain extra entries into Andrew Police giveaways we know we have one coming up soon. Subscriptions Start Art at five dollars a month and As or you can also subscribe using. which prime are I'm reading a super super out of order in its boggling? My brain jewels will cut that as I say. Subscriptions start at five does the month or if you're an Amazon prime subscriber you will also have a free subscription that you can give to us at no cost Just drop by and subscribe each month. you do have to do that manually. Unfortunately Joel says he has nothing I- disbelieved role to disbelieve and Jones is trying as hard to make us look like complete buffoons. I mean it doesn't have to try that now. He doesn't if if you'd like to help out and support we also of course always appreciate Donation in the form of bits or drop by the android police page and the donate button and subscriptions go onto which has dropped by twitch dot TV slash android. Police look for that. Subscribe Button and help us out and with that. Let's talk a little bit about gaming away just well we were just here. But let's do. This is is not cloud based gaming so all you people at tuned out when you heard stadia you can come back in now. We're done we're done with stadia. Well I mean moment. We'll see what happens now. Anyway If you prefer cloud based computers but not cloud cloud based gaming you may have found yourself using chrome Os Gimme on chrome Os hasn't really been a super big thing but that something apparently Google and valve into the change. Those of you out there who know anything about gaming probably know steam It is basically the ultimate and game um delivery in the form of kind of package manager. It makes it easy to buy and download games install them without too much of a hassle and play a gain achievements the whole nine yards. well as it turns out. Google has Kinda let slip that They're working with valve to bring steam two stadia media semi natively. What they're basically going to do is you said come to stadia? It's coming to chrome Os. Oh sorry yeah you're right. I said removing thing remove. I said we're moving on from studio. Oh come on like they're not going to try to stuff sadie. It's not but anyway yeah chrome Os. It's a thing. Yeah so so this is this is kind of weird. So the the idea behind this is that Google would run steam on top of the links container on Chrome Os. which which can you can install steam right now? I did do it but the problem is that right now. The links container has no support for graphics acceleration. So they have to finish I that I before any games become playable. This is so bizarre because everything Google has done up to this point has been saying the Lennox container is only for developers like they've made that very clear when you set up the lyrics container it doesn't sound like a Lennox after you get the terminal and that's it. This is not meant to be like super user friendly but now I guess they'll utilize it and turn it into something that kind of user your friendly. I guess I don't know but it is a very strange move again. This is still like presumably in the early stages. This might not even happen urban. It's something that Google's working towards rain right now. At the very least steam compatibility would be a good benchmark for their Lennox container to see what it's it's a truly capable of but this is also exciting because steamed for Lennox. Last year I believe Added a new feature feature called Proton. which is valves a customized version of the wine compatibility layer That actually translates direct decks calls falls into Volkan to work well under Lennox so the end result is that you can download steam for Lennox or in this case would be st on chrome O s and just hit a button. Pardon and it will download your windows games as if they were native and run them in this. Compatibility layer really without US noticing. It's kind kind of like on the back in the day when apple switched Max to Intel processors and they built this whole subsystem for running power. PC APPS on Intel and you didn't notice it was writing. That's kind of what this is like. I've tried it with a few windows. Games is pretty cool. And they're they're they've actually added official support for a lot of game so you don't even have to enable this in some cases like you just go to Dallas in says. Oh we'll run this layer for you and said everything so if this does has come out than it should have a pretty good cain library. Yeah so it's definitely a good move and seeing his Google even acknowledge college one of the biggest downloads on chrome os devices from in the form of Android apps was almost always gains. So it makes a lot of sense is that they are trying to bring a little bit more of a native experience and obviously bigger repertoire games but that breaks in a new issue performance. It's man you're I fully believe that this is a good thing in the sense that you'll be able to open up your steam library and I don't know about you. I don't know about most people people but man I see my is like eighty ninety percent old games that honestly could play on a ten year old computer perfectly smoothly him. mm-hmm yeah well for the longest time didn't have a PC with dedicated graphics. So I just had you know. I kept buying all the old games I knew would run on like my Mac mini. Yeah so well in most my library admittedly does come from humble bundle purchases that the like you know twenty games. I don't know five. Ten of them are the earliest partisan franchise and they're so old. It's not even a thought a lot of that stuff. I'm sure is going to play actually really well on a chromebook even with minimal or no real graphic graphics acceleration. But I don't think it's GonNa be very good for anything. New and part of that is crumbling. Just don't half the hardware yet very very few of them actually have anything resembling a good. GPA You most of them are pretty low in storage. Relatively hello and Ram Ramos. Probably the biggest issue storage. I've noticed most new chromebook. Now come with like sixty sixty four gigs. At least you could put a couple indie games on that But yet it will come down to what the overhead is like like with both chrome and the links environment and steam all running at once. I know the I know the Lennox environment like it's not it's not like a full virtual virtual machine so it doesn't have a huge performance overhead. It's it's pretty lean. But they're still compatibility layers and sandboxes going on Not including whatever else he might be running at the same time on your chromebook. If you've got a tab open or like an android APP in the background maybe maybe this will even be something that they white-list to only devices with like a moderately powerful processor inside. Oh Man I I hadn't even we consider that and I'm already picturing kind of his same bad experience that happened with Running android APPs initially and then Lennox.

"One of these days. We'll get a phone. That has it all the quad camera. Leather bound foldable phone with Pumpkin huge removable battery but until that day was a CS. Twenty twenty the F.. This is the average. It is Wednesday January eight. Welcome I'm Ryan. Hager alongside cody tombs. It's finally time to talk about the phones in Las Vegas and so we've seen we've seen so far. There's that whole pilot cell phones. There's a Samsung phone that we saw today What else is there? Been in a light. You know it's honestly a lot of junk Because that's pretty much how. CBS operates is like like ninety five percent junk. And you know five percent maybe stuff. That's coming out someday. Yeah and I guess it was holding on Sept as well but everyone who is is big enough to release phones now does their events so they don't really need to show stuff off. CSC more yeah but we did at least get a few interesting things and one thing I do. I love and we're obviously going to be talking about this in a moment but the concept phone though the one plus eight you know you go to an auto show and they have concept cars And this is something people under the comments have been throwing around a lot anyway. So you know cheers commenters Kinda got this right But concept cars are a big thing. Companies build something. Show off something really interesting. It's not anything that they were doing. Mass production of or even necessarily something. They have it on on race track yet but you know they build interesting things and show off what they're doing. Cs took a really big departure from that for like a decade. And now we're seeing companies popping up saying. Hey we're working on something. We don't know that we'll ever sell it or ship it but we're working on it and we think it's neat. That's been happening more in recent years I remember. It was the Vivo concept from last year and the year before right with the last year we had the one with the screen camera and the year before that was at the first pop up. Yeah so what was the first in display. Fingerprint Sense. That was it. We ended had a pop-up Camper if I'm remembering correctly so it is like this returned to concept phones like the newest thing but it's definitely a more recent recent trend there were there was a period where we didn't see weird experimental stuff that didn't land tapping again. Yeah so good times. Good Times so I'll I'll l.. Let you take this opening volley right so the One plus concept one. which is the phones? Name is a Concept phone in case you weren't having followed the news it's concept from which means you can't buy it It's been the product of eighteen months of development one plus says with McLaren. WHO's the There's there's sort of a like a racing company either. Their name is used for a lot of different products. I would call it the closest to A fashion brand that the automobile industry has yeah. It's a fashion brand. That's that's actually. I think pretty apt. I'm so the big deal about this phone. In the fact it's one pluses new. Whatever is that on the back The triple camera setup that it has they can disappear. There is a Sort of neutral cruel density filter that I believe is actually forget what it's called after comic electric chrome like finish material inside of the glass. That hides hides it when it's not in use although I understand it doesn't hide it perfectly or entirely successfully in strong light. I think you can still like Kinda see through. It's not perfectly opaque but it's it's not there air when you don't want it to be there and I guess you can also act as sort of neutral density filter when you're taking photos which doesn't at all sound useful to me on a smartphone camera with tiny sensor and a tiny any lands and mediocre aperture lights already a problem but whatever. Well we don't have to get into it here but There's there's definitely a purpose for it all. I'll all just say that is not a useless thing but unfortunately in the case of at least this implementation and very likely anyone that would be based on this. It's going to impose a A huge shift basically. It's GonNa Really Super Super Emphasize purples. Deep Blue's lose anything in that color range and you're going to have to correct a lot of color in software if you were to try to use this as an actual neutral density filter but apart from the filter it also has kind of an interesting bill of materials. So the back is leather piece weather on the left. Peace letter on the right with this Superfluous Louis metrical stitch running down each side. That bothers me really really badly And I like into sort of pants zipper. UNZIP in there with the cameras just dangling out but I don't think it's the most attractive design myself but around the sides the frame is a PDD gold which is Physical Vapor deposition. It's a A an even finish of sort of very very very very thin thin gold on the metal frame surrounding the edge and this is basically just an exercise in what they can build rather than a consumer product mixing together these intense interesting materials in this weird wacky camera hiding design. But it's this is not coming into your pocket anytime soon right so oh To be fair the leather stitching thing we saw Samsung. Of course do it is like just a fake plastic texture And I think it was the LG not for that had something very similar to this so the leather isn't super new. But that's I think probably just the touch that McLaren wanted to have they're kind of a Look at us. We're different because we're different and is someone who likes leather in electronics doesn't happen. I've been very often. It's been a while since we saw in a commercially shipping products. His kind of cool. Yeah and I don't know that this is necessarily real leather. But I'm going to assume assume it is which cheers to that as long as it's not a creepy plastic kind of thing that's always a good sign but as many people pointed out Dan. I happen to agree. Chances Are you're gonNA throw a case on this so I don't know that really leather is that much of a benefit and it's not gonna be it's not gonna be any by any means us. Oh one of the things. She was just asking chatted. assizes vegetable tanned as android Henrik polices resident expert because I- hobbyist letter worker. I don't think it is that looks like chrome Tanzania based on the color. You don't often see bright colors like this in vegetable sultan's especially lighter colors because they tend to absorb oil and age very quickly based on just the color I would bet this chrome town. They're also less likely sustain. They're not as long term durable when it comes to things like stretching and abrasion but they age more gracefully over a period of their shorter lifespan. Is I guess one way of putting it on so it's not not that Unfortunately which I would like and it's not going to make the phone cohn anymore. The rebels neither will the DVD gold on the frame. Because that's a very very thin layer. Even just I'm sure taking it in and out of your pocket enough times over a couple of years could probably wear it away in spots so this is not going to be super durable advice. I'd even go so far as to say that Just holding it in your hands enough may actually wear it away Again over time. It's not something that's going to happen immediately. After two years how many phones actually do look brand new out of the box. Almighty cody old minute at some of mine do but Yes so cheers to them for experimenting with stuff. It's awesome seen any sort. Lord of like new motion in that field I am very interested in the electric chrome it lasts. I will admit I see absolutely no no reason whatsoever to hide your camera. Lenses That to me is kind of like a a novelty just to be able to say you can do it but but I I don't see a purpose behind it. I don't think anyone wants that or cares about that. It might look kind of neat if you're doing like a fashion photo kind of the situation but outside of that don't care but the possibility of using it as an indie filter is at least kind of clever it's interesting hoses hoses potential use but on another note of things that pose potential use. I guess to someone but not so far Dr. TCL's foldable indeed so tcl has shown.

"Yeah it's it's been it's been a day with C.. So it has been I think some some tripping over words was to be expected. Now we're shifting gears There's probably going to be more chromebooks coming Out But but we'll save those for another time. Yes it looks Ero S. Yeah we've got some watches the talk about super exciting. So the I I watch will talk about. Is the son toes. Seven which is a new where was watched from a Finnish brand and it looks it. It Looks Pretty Nice. So again this episode where you're going to have to click on the links and look at the pictures because I'm not good at were pictures but it looks kind of like fossils watches a little bit but most the ones have this cool outline around the screen the two different material than the rest of the watch such so that's neat Under the hood. It sounds like pretty much like most other where it was watches. It's got a Snapdragon where thirty one hundred and one GIG of Ram. I'm glad more watches. Have One Giga Fram. After the fossils gen five. Show me that you really need that for good wireless experience so this watch should perform fine. Probably the watch also has a few proprietary features so they're claiming more than seventy sports modes once once you install their APP and it also has built in GPS tracking which is fairly common on on where West watches now. But it's still nice. It's also got a amulets. Emily screen that goes up to one thousand of brightness Built in Heart Rate Sensor. Google fit support all that fun stuff so looks like a nice little watch. I I think this is one of the first sort of fitness. Smart Washes have seen. That looks like it'd be good for both fitness in regular wearing like a lot of the a lot of the the Fit where watches are sort of like plastic glass icke. They typically have the non interchangeable bands which drives me crazy because they're always very stiff very rigid bans on the eight. That I'm a little worried that has this one looks like it's a replaceable band. But I am not sure and with a lot of it. It's like hit and miss with. GPS models twos only about half of them seemed to have have interchangeable bands. Yeah we'll have to see. I know all fossils. Recent watches have replaceable standard. Vans which I really appreciate But Ah pre-ordered watcher open now and it costs five hundred dollars which is a lot but you wanted. It's there so one of the other other unique features to is it's going to have fully off line maps so presumably. You're going to be able to go just about anywhere. Leave your phone behind. Signed and still have at least some basic navigation which is an interesting twist. Yeah and As far as I'm aware they didn't say where the maps were coming from though At least I don't believe that this is Google maps that they're doing or if it is the I don't believe they said so yet doesn't look like Google maps so I would guess either like open maps or Here maps I think that's still owned by Nokia hokey. I'm not sure one of those. Yeah I which this Seeing as how it's also going to be coming with one gig of Ram that that was probably kind of a necessity says it to be able to keep maps running at a decent clip. At this point I wouldn't recommend buying aware West Watch with less than a GIG There's just a night and day difference. So speaking of watches of fossil group also had a few new watches to show off so one of their brands diesel. The the original diesel smartwatch came out a few years ago and it was like this massive watch. They came up with another one last year. That was a think a little bit smaller smaller had a different design. And they've made a new one with another design this here and this is the Diesel Fade light and I think this is definitely the most this unique where I've ever seen like I. It's the design subjective. I don't know if it's for everyone. I don't think I could pull this off uh-huh but it's again you have to look at the pictures but it's got like this cool translucent frame the sort of looks like the transparent colored plastic ask a lot of nineties electronics so like if you can think of like the the transparent in sixty four this kind of looks like that so What I saw this my immediate? The thought is if you love the look and art style of the ready player one movie this is for you this one sentece. Yeah Yeah It comes in a couple colors. So there's like a bright red and a gray on a blue and then there's one that's just like white translucent plastic and there's a pretty wild ban that comes with all of them that's like a bunch of different colors and patterns so anyway this is extremely loud. Watch but I. I'm a Fan Donovan. I don't know if I'd wear it but I like it. I like how this looks and thankfully Again they they didn't tell us a lot of technical details about this watch. It sounds like it's just the fossil Jin five and a different frame because it does have a snapdragon thirty one hundred They said more storage space. So I'm assuming that's eight gigs. Just like the Gen five Google pay support. Gps Fun stuff so This watch will be released in March twenty nine. I put March Twenty nineteen crap. That's March twenty twenty. I'm sorry I need to go fix that. It will cost two hundred seventy five dollars which was the same. Ms Ms Rpm the Gen five so maybe they'll come down in price too audibly. But I have to say for diesel to come out with anything. It's it's I guess average price or normal price. That's rare diesel is a is a true fashion brand and everything I've ever seen from them is usually good like five to ten times what you would expect it to be from anybody else. Yeah this is cool watch I I like this more of this please. So moving on from where Wes With things is that how you pronounce their name. I always things with ings okay. We'll go with. Yeah that sounds right with things so This company has made sort of hybrid watches for a long time where it's a regular design but with Like an eating screen I think or maybe it's LCD something On top of the physical face and they came out with a new model called the a fib web no way no no the the. It's called the scan. Watch the scan watch area very good name. They they really wrap their brains around trying to come up with that name Well you know in this market you have to. You got to work around all the other names. People have already thrown around in in fairness diesels watch was the Fayed Light. So I'm uh-huh not picking favorites here exactly. But the the main selling point for this watch is that it has a lot of sensors in it so it has a Heart Rate Sensor in SPO to censor three electrodes and an ulta meter so it can give you lots of fun health data and it it also has a it just tells you about your heart rate so fundamentally though the big thing here is this is going to be the first watch just to come out that actually in some fashion kind of competes with apple for For having an E C G built in Yom so we can track Ichiro fibrillation Or sorry fibrillation always say that wrong. Anyway also known for colloquially as a fib so yeah eight eight can better track your health signals than pretty much any other watch out there. That's on the consumer market get which up till now apple has pretty much held all of the Glamour for that one? I liked the so so on the twitter chat. I want my watch to tell me exactly the moment I get diabetes from terrible Diet your watch well shame you for eating cheeseburger. Burger live so Yeah again because the Apple Watch obviously does not work with android. It's definitely worth Checking out any any watches compatible with android that can offer the same features and there because again this is still like like a hybrid. Watch where the whole screen gene is not a digital. They're saying it should still get around thirty days of battery life which is really good. And if you're interested in getting the small no one is should be available for two hundred forty nine dollars and there is a. I'm sorry no you have it right. The small one is nine and and the larger one is going to be two ninety nine. I'm sorry that is typically for thirty eight millimeter and a forty two millimeter version. Yeah and they're going to be available in Q.. Two twenty twenty. So you know. Spring may be going into summer. Yeah and it still looks like a really nice watch awesome awesome now. There's there's a little bit of more competition in this space. Now because fossil released their hybrid smart watches last month or the month before. But they don't half half ECJ e anything fancy like that just alright censor yeah. This is This is certainly great thing in that sense The only let's see. I honestly cannot remember but I believe it does have some decent integration with Google fit. So I that's probably going to be the one and only Real way that you you can do much tracking with it outside of using weddings own apps so this will on the plus side it is at least going to be decently portable in terms of data. You're going to have access to it but this also isn't going to have some of the features of android wear in case anyone was really that concerned about that. Yeah it is not aware watch so lots of funds deficits Eso far. There's more fun stuff on the way. And Cody you WanNa you WANNA take us out. "We had a post Corbin posted this earlier today Samsung basically has a really bad habit. It's had this for quite awhile. Wile basically what happens is if you take a screen shot. It goes into a sub folder within the DECEM older Those who may not know or have never never looked at it. The decent folder is where all of your photos go And it kind of makes sense. You know if you take a screen shot. It's another image. You're you're you're putting on your phone the problem. is you combine this with Google photos which also likes to back up the decent folder and any sub folders. I so the end result is anytime you take a picture or a screen shot on a Samsung phone. Both those are going to get backed up to Google fotos does now. Why does this not happen anywhere else? And actually it to be clear it actually definitely does happen on some other phones but The reason this doesn't happen happen on most other phones is most other phones. Puts your screen shots into a completely separate older. It actually goes under pictures slash screen shots instead of December slash screen shots so Yeah basically as a result jake clutter up your Google photos. Backups Seeing as is your on a Samsung phone you probably don't have re unlimited photos or original quality unlimited so this could actually be cluttering up and taking up storage basically. It's kind of a bad habit and the real problem here is Samsung. Doesn't give you any way to control where your screen shots go. Yeah Samsung still takes exchange screen shots too doesn't it. Oh yeah that's true it does. Yes yeah that I think is a bigger problem than the Google photos backup Burmese. Personally I mean I I actually kind of liked to have all of my screen shots backed up automatically like one of those important things for my workflows actually dropbox Back because it'll it grabs screen shots like in addition to photos and they and they backup so fast. It's so it's so convenient. I need to take a bunch of screen shots for us by Google the go-to slower. So I don't really use that anyway. Yeah for for those of us who work in this and we're taking screen shots on literally like dozens of times each day honestly like backup in this case is both annoying and awesome because we really want the sinking. We really want fast access. So so we're not just manually. Moving every screen shot from the phone to our computers. I'm not sure how much this necessarily applies to everybody I I think there are a lot of people out there who probably never take screen shots. I mean I feel like I feel like a lot of people do like just to like to like share things that have happened because that's easier for them then like like getting some sort of like the like shit like sharing a the original content from facebook post. They'll just take a screen shot of facebook post. I and like put it on some other network Okay yeah that you hit at also. IRA had two ideas in my head for where people took screen shots all talk. One was text messaging APPs. which is that The other one very weirdly. I've seen a lot of people take screen shots of Google maps and share those. I feel like that I could see that too. Yeah I mean did they. Were like links. You can share and Google mattress. They're not super assessable screeching retried. Surcharges can be but I think most people don't take enough of them for this to be a serious problem. It's just like it's like an ongoing annoyance and has been for years and it would be it would be very easy for Samsung to to excess. Yeah in general. This is another one of those examples of settings while you should always have smart defaults. There's nothing better than having having setting so you can just control all of these things from the start and plus It is notable Google photos will actually ask you if you WANNA start start backing up additional folders when it sees them so This is one case where Samsung really could. Just move the screen shots to another sub folder. And it wouldn't really heard anything. At least not for Google photos. There may be other APPS. The care but I I can't think of too many that that won't take something outside of the Dean Sim folder. All right well this wrap it up Cody what you WANNA WANNA take out. "A banana you. He didn't think we were GONNA go there today. Did you So this was one of those things. Where if you were on twitter in the past week you probably couldn't escape the story that everyone oh sharing there was a art show in Miami Beach the art basil and one of the pieces aces? I use that term very loosely was a banana duct taped to a wall. It is the the piece was called. Comedian I guess it was supposed to be a satire or something. I write about phones for a living. So I'm not the person to try to describe this but it was a banana duct taped to a wall and it sold for one hundred in twenty thousand dollars which might have been money laundering but again. I'm not sure I write about phones for a living but the reason we're talking about it is Nokia. Did a smart little a PR thing in. They posted a tweet. That says bananas are delicious but a banana that can make calls now. That's a masterpiece. And and they attached a picture of their Nokia banana phone duct tape to the wall which is very clever. Yeah just just a fun stupid thing. Yeah it it's a certainly bizarre i. I'm not really part of the art world either so I really don't know what to make of it but I guess cheers to them for finding a really interesting way to make a lot of money. Yeah it's just a fun dumping Nokia did that. I I appreciate also someone later. Ripped the banana off the wall and ate it and they had to replace the banana so that was that was the thing it's been a week and that's what I'm trying to get across. It's been it's been very. It's been a week that it has Speaking of weird stuff. Because why would why would. Why wouldn't you want this? Why would you want this? I don't know Roland made Roland by the way in case you are familiar with that name. They make keyboards musical instrument keyboards. And they now have one called the go Fokino that has Alexa. So basically what you can do. Is I guess while you're talking to your keyboard you can tell it to do things. Those those things could involve watering food because as a musician of course you know you got to eat other things you might do. which apparently he's the actual purpose of this is to change settings on the keyboard so instead of going through the menus which we're talking keyboard that has a pre tiny screen the button configuration is never going to be that fast? You're never going to want to change things that quickly So what you can do here is tell the keyboard to chain certain settings or open certain. Sounds it's things like that and it will do this by voice so I guess that's a bit more convenient. You can also do things like Toronto metronome. Tell it to start recording things like that so I get the purpose for it. It makes sense but at the same time. It just seems so strange that you're going to have a keyboard with a built-in Invoice Assistant. Yeah but I mean. We're only a couple weeks away from CBS. And that's when we see Alexa in everything you could possibly imagine Alexa being so I think this is just a precursor to warm us up for all of the strange home electronics. That will have Alexa in the next among certainly will. I'm sure that this year is going to be another one. That's nothing but CAS with every gadget every assistant except maybe Cortana. Yeah doesn't really no no record. Hana yeah no one's looking for I'd still missing. Oh Hey crunchy. Goodness and chat brought up a great little comment Sam Jackson Imagine this Sam Jackson speaking to you from your keyboard now that this is something I actually feel like we need. That's a selling point. Put that on the box hells. Yeah should come. What the the one dollar Samuel Jackson Voice? Yes greatest crossover anyway. So moving on from silly keyboard We are doing a reader's choice award for the the best smartphone of twenty nineteen. So the editors Andrew Please already picked their favourite fun of the year. which was the pixel three which I wholeheartedly agree with? That's an excellent phone. But we're also doing a reader's choice. So we have a poll in the show notes and in the twitter chatman wherever. You're listening to this that you can vote in and you have until twelve. PM Pacific this Friday to vote. That would be the the twentieth. So we have a phones nominated from Samsung Google oneplus while way Xiaomi and really I'm surprised the galaxy AC- full didn't make it into the list that didn't get enough votes in the The initial round like we. We actually started this off. We asked people in the comments to suggest phones in we. Would I would put like the top ten or so. into the this actual pulp surprisingly galaxy. Full didn't get that many votes but not many people well had the chance to try a two thousand dollar phone. I can kind of understand that. Yeah well at the very least it could be considered most interesting phone of a year. Oh and kill bought also brings up the Moto fold which wit or that's the modo razor right. Yeah been a good one to have to. Let's not even out yet. I don't think that qualifies. Oh good point. I think it's not out. I don't think it's how now I'm I'm sure you're right. It's not out yet but yeah kind of like what Joel Joel says in chat. The folding phones are probably going to be a thing for next year come next year. We'll have to actually take them semi seriously and I'm sorry for my dog in the background. She's getting very upset. cushy years people hallway so it's okay that'll get edited out. It probably won't 'cause you were talking while it's fine it's okay we're all good here. Daisies our special guests. I'm GonNa go let her out real quick all right well on that note because Why why not so? I have to agree. The three a was definitely the phone of the year for us. I think we all agreed and we even had this conversation on the queue in a a couple of weeks ago the three really just set a good bar for almost every phone. It wasn't the best phone in any particular regard for the most part but it didn't have too many compromises and the price was actually very reasonable as long as you live in the US or one of those other countries that didn't get it overpriced iced but Yeah Yeah so Now it's definitely time for people to join in and give their opinions as well so so all. "It's Friday the thirteenth of December welcome. I'm Corwin Davenport along with cody teams. And we've got some stuff to talk about this week. Oh I'm sorry. Did I interrupt you. I was just go figure it would be Friday the thirteenth. Somehow we the first something to go wrong this episode. Yeah I guess it is cursed. I did notice yesterday was twelve twelve because I saw a funny tweet where someone you said. I picked a bad day to set up this APP and it was a screen shot of the calendar APP showing options for calendar format and so all the options were twelve. Twelve twelve twenty nine. He was funny awesome. Yeah so anyway. Speaking of unlucky galaxy fold sales. Yeah so there. There was a little bit of a kerfuffle earlier this week at Samsung because the head of Samsung Electronics claimed over one million galaxy phones were sold which would have been pretty impressive considering that it's designed to be a niche product sampling said multiple times. This was not intended for the masses asses. This is just an experimental phone for the people who have lots of expendable income and want to try it out So one million would have been pretty impressive and and it would have been double what most analysts said which was five hundred thousand but Samsung just put out a statement. Either last night later early this morning that they did not sell a million units the person who said that might have been confusing it with the sales goal from before it was delayed so they don't have a real number to give us so we don't we're we're back to not knowing how many of these galaxy phones have been sold. Yeah so oh we obviously especially on this podcast. We've taken a few shots at Samsung over the fold We've we've certainly made fun of how many we expect they're selling. I'm sure the number is is actually not terrible. But judging by the fact that they didn't give us any real number or even confirm whether it was close to the actual estimates that they were. You're calling for. I have a feeling it probably fell pretty short. If it was well over that estimate like now that this is the conversation they would have said so if it hit the estimate they would have said. Yeah no we were about their. We're doing okay. So in all likelihood I suspect they probably had to come in pretty significantly only below what they were aiming for yes. I'm sure it definitely took a huge nosedive when they cancelled the pre orders. Because then you're also telling people like we need you to be really sure you're buying this and that's not something you do if he wants something to sell very well we'll wait. Did Samsung actually cancel those pre orders or was the carriers. I thought the carriers at least ordered carriers I thought those were cancelled by the carriers and then Samsung Bolts with air unlocked unlocked models. Yeah I think that might have been. I Know Samsung made the decision to cancel its own People who ordered through Samsung Dot Com. Those were cancelled right. I know because Max from expiate complained about it. A Lot. PREORDER was canceled. But yeah and again. I don't think the sales numbers really manner honor for this phone because Samsung made it clear like this is an experiment. We're not super concerned about making 'cause like even if this was a mass market phones they wouldn't make back the amount of money spent on. RND for this kind of form factor. So it's probably going to be a while before this line is super profitable which just fine is Samsung. Seems like it wants to take time to get it right instead of. If they didn't want to do that then they wouldn't have canceled all the pre orders and there would have been lots of AH angry customer reviews from people getting their phones that they weren't prepared to have with all the issues right and even presence on basically said that they want to release this sort of thing so that they can have it out in the market people can put it through different tests so to speak speak and basically break the phone in different ways so you know it to their credit. They are saying exactly the right thing in that regard even though they are still still putting out a Beta test for two thousand dollars Yep but so. You hasn't sold a million phones but it's probably not an insignificant amount of money that they've made already so as a quick update. We're really not going to make much of a topic out of this. But for those who may need the information mation or would like to give the information to others the FCC has created a short code or rather short number for the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline. Here in the United States. So if you're feeling depressed or any need to speak with somebody please dial nine eight eight. It's basically a quick simple three digit number pretty easy to remember Certainly easier than the full INC number that they had in the past. which was? It's not live yet. Yeah they're voting on it and then carriers will have eighteen months to connected. So Oh okay I wanted this I I had read all the other stuff about this but I missed. Your heart is anyway so yeah. It's the same number the current number actually one eight hundred two seven three eight two five five and they're shortening that two nine nine eight or I'm sorry nine eight. This was always one of those sort of hotline numbers. That I was shocked didn't have a easier to remember version. Yeah this is like if nine one one was like a ten digit number. Yeah it's it's generally speaking. A lot of their hotlines probably just should have short numbers. The only thing is there aren't too many of those already. So yeah so this is good stuff hopefully Carriers sort this out quickly so don't have to remember a big long number. Yeah exactly so like I said. I don't think there's really much much to say on this but for those who are interested That number will probably go into effect in the relatively near future. I cannot imagine carriers taking eighteen months actually implement this WanNa passes if you enjoy the podcast. You're listening to including our mistakes and various blunders. And whatever other crypto currency. I guess is popular these days. I can't keep track anymore. Short version help us out. Yeah please please give money. That's that's the short version anyway I I don't not really have a good transition to this but I wrote a fun thing this morning. Actually I wrote it over the course of the weekend and it went live this morning about android tins missing features so entry ten. I think was probably the most interesting released from new standpoint because I think they were definitely more Betas for Andrew attend than any previous release and they're on top of that there were sort of leaked. AP KS and builds. That came out between them or before. The official Beta process began So there was a lot of stuff that showed up in Betas and then vanished in the wind at some point or stuff that was promised and never showed up at all or some stuff that looked like it might have been coming to android ten but just ended up being a picture before feature. BIRT's saying some reason I wanted to quickly talk about some of these a lot of these. I'd actually forgotten about two and now I'm annoyed. They're not an android ten special because I'm probably not getting a pixels. Not Getting all the pixel four features so the first one that just completely vanished was the screen recorder. I I know probably not a lot of people super care about this. I care about it obviously because I write about android so it helps to have a nice screen recorder. That isn't like a third party APP. I am especially one that could record system audio which no screener court has been able to do on Android for at least a few years. I don't remember if it was previously possible I I know there were ways with rude APPs. I don't you can do it with through Yeah I don't believe it was ever technically part of the API though yeah so there. There was a screen recorder in early android and Betas and didn't really work at all but it showed Google was kind of working on one which was exciting itself But it was part of the Flags flags toggles in the settings APP and the final version of Andrew. Ten doesn't have those flags visible anymore. Which means there's no way to enable the screener quarter because the screen recorder was never taken out of the flags? Maybe we'll see this android eleven. I I really hope so because I'm really tired of waiting for it Another one this is tactically android ten. But it happened while Andrew Ten was in Beta and it's related SORTA I included anyway. Not Not just because I already written two paragraphs before I realized it wasn't part of Android. That's not the reason at all So showed up was fast share so andrew. Ten removed moved Something called Android Bean. which was the thing where you can tap your phone to another phone to transfer Alec your elbows in context that sort of thing? It was not suited for file sharing hearing at all because NFC is just the lowest possible protocol for sending data so there was evidence a couple of months ago that Google was adding something like Apple. Oh airdrop to Google play services. But it's hasn't it hasn't been released yet now. Some of the folks that have shown that it's still in development and they're still working on it to probably still come at some point but it's part of play services so maybe fingers crossed come to older versions possibly yeah. That's that's definitely something that we could use because Like sharing photos and things like that especially if you're using any any like anything hi Rez. That's that's going to be so valuables and also between Phones and chromebooks hopefully fast share actually becomes functional on chromebooks in books. Because then you could legitimately use them for things at that point. Yeah I'd I'd love it if maybe they could extend this too. I know Google's allergic due to making desktop software but having a win like a windows or Lennox companion for Fachet or like a whip or something would be Kinda cool. The I was just thinking that I want at this. I want to be able.

"Android police yes and so our next story here is about stadia and it's a doozy like google cannot have many more things go wrong this launch and it just found another one cell apparently the crow culture which is the sort of the streaming endpoint for stadia on your tv it's not dealing with the heat generated by a biologist dreaming very well so apparently some people's are just shutting off in the middle of a game which is pretty bad that's that's not that's not a good thing i mean in salt lake a comcast ultra has never had a problem like this before i i hear at least occasionally about people having chrome casters overheat and shut down to streaming regular like netflix video or something but state yet can be a pretty serious obvious amount of of streaming i think if you're doing four k. like that it's pulling down thirty five megabits like continuously while you're playing it really doesn't you know really doesn't have a lot of a lot of time to rest while you're playing but i mean when i so i hat stadia to test before it came out and it it was fine for me when i was playing at i i played for probably an hour max and it didn't you know oh it didn't shut down for me but i mean google has had a lot more problems a status since it actually launched to everybody i think people have complained more about how about lag latency which didn't seem like a big problem for me when i used it but there were also like you know a hundred people using it at the time yeah but i mean the chrome culture doesn't have a fan so like if you know if it just can't handle that much heat and it's it's gonna shut down yeah and i think the the.

"That. I think I think they really did I. I like a lot of the gawker properties. I don't think as Moto got enough credit. For the way they shape the world of technology reporting early on like Gawker itself else shape the world of like you know investigative reporting and a lot of ways modern Lee you know Gawker took a lot of risks Gizmodo Gizmodo and product technology. Nobody's going to say they were like a beacon of investigative journalism but in the space of product journalism where accesses everything is motivated. Take a lot of risks like they pissed. Most people off constantly iphone. Four is the peak of that. I mean was it was Jason Chan who got his door. Knock Down Salaam. I don't and they lost access to apple for a long time. I think they got it back a few years later after Tim Cook took over. But like you. You can't say they weren't willing to Piss the company's off and like this was in that era where like readers didn't necessarily want that but now like you want want someone who's willing to say like yeah I wanna I'll cover the story. That makes Mark Zuckerberg kicked down my door lake. You want reporters who are going to do. That and Gizmodo was doing that before kind of before it became cool. I guess yeah they really were so Speaking going back to android police police a little bit like so. I don't honestly remember when you started like I had so many people come and go and it's you know I barely have enough functioning. Brains means all last week. Yeah I'm looking at here. Remembers me from Right now so just your college fling. I lifted up by the way I started in January. Two thousand twelve twelve and left in July two thousand thirteen. Yup did not did not last crazy long but they were. They were memorable memorable mice Full Year Eric. Eric was I what I do. Remember about. Eric was that for a brief overlap period. When Airing Gingrich still worked for us and you could not have found two people who did not doc get along worse than like Eric and Erin like it was the most ridiculous thing? It was like putting literally putting a cat in a bathtub full of water like it was just. It was a violent reaction. That's granted I did not get along with Aaron very well at the time either but didn't get along with me very well back then either. We argued all the time. But that's what that's what we do everybody at injury police argues. It's like what makes we really steal you for your your future work so I mean and what do you like if you look back. Is there any like thing you posted for us that you're like I'm really. I was the one thing where I really felt like. This is what I WANNA do. Now this is the EH. This is obviously like where I wanNA take my career. Well okay the direction I want to take my career. I'm trying to think 'cause I wrote a lot of stuff that I loved loved writing for android police that I don't even know if I could make my career now like okay. Well you can poop joke in one. That's like Well there was one. I know you said this is a swearing podcast. But it's on your website. I can say it. I wrote a review of Taint Wrangler. Yeah it was because like article. Just find bad games like they're not games. You want to recommend to anyone and I think the headline was something along. The lines of taint wrangler is a bad game. That will be pulled before you finish reading this story and it was. It was minutes after the story. Went up wrangler. There is a gross perverse horrible game will be pulled before you finish reading this article. The thumbnail is a blurred penis had to blur it and and like I loved writing those though because they like it was it was just fun to take the piss out of well on the store stores those like I don't know if they did well but like they like they were. They did well with our audience. The people who talk to us because I'm guessing there's like one hundred comments on that or at least some article like that like I love doing those were so much fun. I'm like I actually wanted to for my career and wish I could do that for my career But like I think they were. There were some bigger articles. Where like I did some editorial stuff I know in twenty twelve? I did one of the articles that was like it's okay if your phone isn't revolutionary like I was like like look at I remember. I had a really pretentious section about punctuated equilibrium or something whereas like look things are going to change a lot really quickly and then not change for a while and then they didn't like it's been six seven years since I wrote that article and I I think more changed in the four years leading up to it then in the seven years since then for smartphones. Because like you don't like it you don't need them to change and like I love love looking at like those high level views of of technology and really any area that ended up writing for more than just technology now but like I love take like taking a step back can going like. Hey let's look at what's really going on which I think puts me at odds sometimes with the phone review community Every once in a while every once in a while I think that's fair to say definitely I mean I. It's it's we're in this business where you know like a lot of people. Have you know I admittedly us to to an extent of resigned to the fact that well there is this ocean of never ending tidal wave of products. And you just gotTa sit there with a bucket and like spe- Belan water the whole time and there's there's not a lot of time for reflection on their frankly it can be hard. I think that's changed slowly a little bit Eh. But I I think that you know like you said back in the day you know the whole blog spam thing was really going strong and really was a lot of regurgitation. Today I think in company you know we were being a little more thoughtful. But you know since you've been doing this you now almost as long as I have What are what are the biggest changes you feel like you've scene you know In the world of technology in the way people talk about products and lay companies. Like you know present products because I think there have been some pretty monumental so shifting since like twenty eleven twenty two while yeah I mean I will say I think that especially since at least the time I was at Andrew. Police people are a lot more privacy conscious even if they don't think they can do anything about it like I think there's a lot of people who are like. Yeah Google's got my data. There's nothing I can do about it but I don't like it whereas especially in twenty eleven two thousand twelve. It was your Google. Take my data and I don't think I don't think people knew quite what Google can do or any company could do with it. My favorite example that I use is a google voice when it first came out Asked for permission into analyze your voice data to transcribe. Emails are not humid force meals rather and people were like. Yeah sure like I'm sure no no one's listening to my. My voice mails and I don't think too. Many humans were but google took that data and used it to build the first versions. The Google assistant that we have today and that wasn't like the key but Google got a big head start invoice assistance because of impart part that data. I don't think people like saw that far ahead back then but now I think people are more aware of like you know Google could get this data and I don't know what they can do with it but I know they could do something with it seeing them do so many anything with data. I'm not. They knew what they were going to do with identity. Yeah yeah I I just recently did a piece on stadia or I talked to a privacy privacy researcher who was talking about like stadium people talk about. Google is GonNa Kill Stadium Year. No they're not. Google is never going to kill stadium. I think I bet I shouldn't say that. And the reason I think though the reason I think they have a vested interest in keeping it is because you can learn a lot about how people think think from how they behave in a video game like. There was a researcher who was talking about. How in an emo they could tell how shy or outgoing person was based on how close they stand to another player? And that's just the kind of data that you just don't think about when you're playing a video game and if Google has Ten thousand people who ever played their games. That's enough for a sample size. That's enough to get like performed studies on how players behave and extrapolate that out of something. That's an I sound conspiratorial because I'd like I don't know how they would translate whether or not you choose the shotgun versus the pistol game into usable data for advertisers. But I also couldn't predict how they could turn a voicemail service into an ever present voice assistant in your. We're home so like I think people are more aware of how companies like Google can do things with data that they would never dream them and they're nervous about it they can do. Yeah I honestly have not heard anybody I think yet. Excuse me I may not have seen articles people have written about this. But I've read read anything about people and study a- As far as privacy concerns because you say you stadium is a stadium. I don't know I don't I always yeah. I think it's actually I think it stadium. I've been corrected on Multiple Times because people look at me like I'm having a stroke when I say the other way I soon. Yeah Yeah So. That's interesting so I I've not read sadie as Privacy policy but I do wonder how much insight Google can get into what people are doing the stadium as far as like how they're playing games. I think that's also probably fairly expensive data to track Even even captures would be pretty pricey stuff but but mark could be very valuable data to sell back to came publishers to understand how people playing their games like two games Welch. There's a lot of data but getting that level of data would be a step beyond i. I would actually say the opposite. Because game developers have had this data for years like by aware released stats about like which path people took in mass effect. You know do they want to play paragon or renegade or whatever game developers have been tracking data about customers for years but game developers have a hard time with revenue..

"You're going to get a premium for that but then what the heck do you do on that tiny screen. I'm just thinking about like are kind of project the productivity like what we do. I'm constantly moving windows around. I'm just I need to be able like when you're crafting for instance with physical media like you need to be able to have paper strewn about and like whatever strings scissors all the tools that you have just around and that's how I write and produce sent. He's like I've got a window here and a window. There and I've got a file behind this window and I just let me be messy because that's how my brain is trying to put all this stuff together and can't do that on a sixteen by nine resolution. You really can't like this sixty-nine guarantees who have one window in front of you thirteen inch display yeah on the Pixel Book. I can eat picks bring pixelbook. It's tall enough that I occasionally. I'll stack windows a little bit not get done but it's got so much more room and I just who who does Google think the customer. That's my thing who does think once this I don. I Love I love. I love my pixelbook ideal with chrome. Os Chrome less good at certain things but mostly I deal with chromos because I love the pixelbook so much because it's so portable it so light and you know the layout to me is perfect got a great keyboard board tall screen. I can get real work half and half screen. If you need to like all right I'll do research another another window and half that available to me so batter. I still think it's for gaming and sure I'm sure Google will include that in the keynote presentation. I'm sure they'll say in run study as a you can play you know overwatch on on the go and it's like well okay like every other naming laptop that all the cool kids are buying now gaming laptop sales apparently are through the roof. also gaming laptops tend to hover around the fifteen point six screen resolution because like that's what you WanNa play a game at. You have some some frigging increase greenspace. You want to be able to live and be your Merson the land that you're in. I'm sorry I can't do that at thirteen inches. sues thirteen inch laptop is not good for gaming unless you're like way a appear like it's just the it's not. It's not gonNA work very well. You're going to be hunched over lake. Who's where's the. Where's the bad guy there. He is okay. Also nobody's playing games the track pad this thing God. No I just don't even put the track pat and I think they should sell them out of it exactly like if you're a Gamer and you WANNA mouse well. You don't want Bluetooth mouse because there's too much latency you want a Wifi dungle mouse because it's basically zero latency like these like so. I think the game angle I do think I do think like Badger says I think they're going to push that at the at the event but I think that as a product point like someone's to mobile some sorry someone's to mobile about that they need to call on some gamers and I mean maybe I'm sure they did because Google does is research but that doesn't feel like like Gamer think to me like I don't think like that yeah. I think that what Google Google's whatever happened in the product planning for this this we haven't technically seen it yet. I know that there could be new chrome. Os features debuted on it. going to try to make the case on the merits but it's very hard for me to see this as anything dead on arrival as it stands they were. I'm not even sure what Google could do to make this. Make this workable me either. I I'm so happy with my pixelbook. What else you got to give me something that tops that and the suspect you're not a and I even a pixel pen user? Okay just to like put it put it out there so give me something yeah so. I mean this is why I waited for a little bit to see what's going to happen because I love my pixel book. The battery is starting to degrade a little bit and I'm at the point. Where also I am deciding. Do I want to stick it out with chrome. Os and sticking out you really do. I'm sorry I love certain things about Chromos but you are without a doubt sticking it out by being a crow you were making compromises their inherent compromises and those compromises have you now generally google done very little the mitigate some of them which is frustrating like local media handling pamphlet local files on chrome. Os is a nightmare it. It is the worst especially if you bring android absence in the mix who is an unorganized closet as how I look at it is just pasta files in there and the Mike and find it later exactly yeah. It's just it's not a good system. I mean I know windows has many many many many faults especially actually you've just relating to how much legacy they have to support and how things used to work with computers and they don't really work that way anymore but windows so good at organizing things letting you set up a workflow. Get you back to where you're going. It's not as instant on his chroma and that's what I love about chrome. It's always always there for me like as soon as I turned it on like everything's ready to nuke yet but when I decided to order the surface laptop. I'd just as soon as I started thinking about. I can run photoshop shop. I can run late room. I can have icons on my desktop. I can have organized folders on my desktop. I can have access natively to my dropbox. I'm like I'm an idiot. If I stick with chromos at this point like it's just not it's not the right platform if you're going to be making investment in productivity device like just doesn't make sense. That's a wish it got there but never did jewels was highlighting my Easter egg in in the notes which is a tweet beat that I made this last weekend which was back to my chromebook after weaken away with a windows laptop as like coming home to reliable friend. That isn't so good at crafty things. It's like it's a friend that comes over and is like hey. What are you going through like the listen to you. Comfort you like they'll watch movies with you and like maybe make some soup but when you need help like installing siding on your house or maybe you need to clean the backyard like they're not really the person that you call to do that. That's accurate. That's good because I last weekend I went to La to work so I wanted to bring my windows laptop with me the little the old one that I told you that I have around because the normal one that I use too big to to travel with even though it is done me so well it's Adele. INSPIR- on which I know is was like flow. What are you doing. You know better than that. You know what people have a lot of money I pay a mortgage. We we have to wait wait things sometimes and that that XPS like did everything that I needed it to do and he made me miss the chromebook the pixelbook keyboard so much like it was so hard to do any writing on that thing so this is a conversation. I really wanted to have with this. Week's like history of computers personally personally and just what his lettuce decisions. We have so like my first laptop. I didn't have a laptop until two thousand nine. I had never owned one before. I barely early ever even used a laptop before building them beforehand. I had I'd tower. PC's growing up you know for years like I think my dad got us us. Our family like a way too expensive like four eighty six and nineteen ninety two or three. Don't quote me on the years I don't know my Intel processors re very well but and then we just kind of kept going and I always had tarp keys and I always play desktop games but when it came time to have my own computer you know flow you and I are kind of like the same generation reason that we're so we probably went to college like right around the same time and we were part of that. We're generation where college had not quite become a place where you needed a laptop yet but but by the time I was finishing college. You need a laptop. That's when it started like so I'd finished in my last year two thousand nine ten and by the time is midway through a two thousand nine. Everybody had laptops. We're this come from. I don't have one of these desktop and my dorm so I have a lot of money in high school but I did website work on the side which apparently people paid me to do. Thanks to all those people. turns out a few go to church. There's a lot of people there who you pay you to do things so he can't so that really helps. I don't go to church anymore but my freelance business still thriving so I'm okay but I I did. I had I bought myself. I worked three jobs when winter because I wanted three retail jobs because I wanted to buy presents for people and I ended up making enough money. God I see back then we were young. We could like work. Autonet was is like now. I can't do that now. I can barely work like eight hours. Oh my God Adam so tired so I save enough money and I bought myself a gateway at best buy no at FRY's I bought it at FRY's and that's the laptop that carried me through college because they needed something portable before I ended up building a tower for gaming but that was that was my trusty steed for quite many years of listening to music and doing work on the go. I never brought it with me to class. It was too heavy and clunky. I still do paper notes these days. I just run with a lot of laptops because that's all I have room for. I'm looking forward to moving into a bigger house. Oh speaks to build a computer. Oh my God that's where I'm at so when I when I got my first laptop I was dumb college student who did not understand money. My apparently did not teach me much about personal finance when I was a kid and honestly my parents made some pretty poor financial decisions when I was child anyway so I was in college I into the the computer store in the library or the bookstore. We had a separate computer store inside the bookstore with Davis huge school so there is a bookstores massive and I started looking at macbooks and I'm like I wish I really wish I could get one of these because that was when apple still did student discounts counts percent yeah so I'm like I want that totally fully loaded fifteen inch macbook pro with the discrete reach. CPU and it was like twenty five hundred dollars or something ridiculous and I'm like and then some told me Oh you know you just put down your student account right and and I'm like what you can you can just put things on your student account and just pay for them later and I'm like sold so yes. I was not good good with money in my early twenties. I was very bad at it. I just for somebody. WHO's mathematically minded. I was real stupid anyway. Don't don't feel bad about it. It's it's the world that we lived in two and back then everybody had Mac books and college to that was I always felt like an outlier with my. I didn't get until I had a salary the job and they gave me one and I was back to pay for it. This is great was apple and so on one of my coworkers convinced me. I was doing a part time job. He's gotta you gotTa get back. GotTa Mac you gotTa get a Mac and I'm like okay events and so I got it and I loved it and and that was when Snow Leopard had just come out that was really peak Mac. Os In my opinion never but I only kept it for a year because hey hey I looked at my student account balance and I'm like Oh. I have to pay this off after I'm done with school. Apparently that's a thing so I sold some guy. I actually didn't take that much of a hit on it. It Max really retain their value very that's the one good thing about them. They're like yeah I think I sold it to him for like fifteen hundred bucks and I paid twenty three hundred four which depreciation yeah yeah. It was pretty good. I was totally happy with that and so I got to. I went to law school and I need the laptop again and I was broke and so so I'm sitting there thinking all right. I mean you went to law school. I need a laptop and so eventually basically the first year of law school. I held out. I did did not buy a laptop and I wrote all of my notes by hand. I took all of my exams by hand which was a nightmare like had right. Everything in blue books in these writing about Russia and China hand is like Ni- it's not fun. He's like two thousand word essays by hand. I mean people who used to do that all the time too but and then I broke down and bought a crappy little refurbish del that book and that was my first experience with the net book and it was so bad it was so you couldn't believe how slow it was like that thing was tiny but it ran the exam software and that's all I needed to do and it worked and I didn't have another laptop until I think by the time a couple of years after I dropped out of law school I got Adele. XP has thirteen which was like the super futuristic the new style the one that was like borderless and had the stupid bottom Webcam that made you look like you yeah yeah me and my Chin look even fatter than it is and that was that was really bill that laptop I end up hating it in the end I really I I was like so cool..

"Motorola's was last year. They had they had a fingerprint sensor on the right side where the power button should be. But it was just a sensor and the power button was on the left side, which I thought was really dumb. Our button is on the right side. But but yeah, but I don't see any fingerprint sensor. So I don't know like what if this doesn't have one, and they just rely on garbage Arab Canberra-based face unlock. I don't I don't think they would do that though. I mean, even for Motorola standards. I don't know. I have little fade Motorola, makes some pretty bad errors in judgment. Oh, actually, you know, what it's going to be the fingerprint sensor is another modem on. They can do it. That's what they're gonna do. So instead of bundling a battery motto motto in the box like last time though bundle the fingerprint sensor mud, and then they'll they'll also bundle. The headphone Jack mind lets you have to switch mid for this. This has a headphone Jack though, because it's a place those those do 'cause they're cheap. And you know, that's just what they do. Okay. But yeah. So that's the thing. Did anybody else have thoughts about this phone? I just really didn't think they would make another see phone. I thought after that weird Z three that that was it that was that was a weird that was a weird choice. And I don't know. I Motorola, she doesn't want it that it was wrong. Should though. They absolutely should. That'd be. No. So. We have been talking a little bit about our twitch schilling situation. But we can we can do the regular the full twitch chill. Yeah. "Yeah agc apples teaser agents the ipad in the iphone so getting they had one for the ipod touch too but noone used yeah it's true so i'm getting on android funds though perhaps unsurprisingly the next to six p still the most popular device on android police really really cyprus a little combine out yet internal on i would not be surprised if the histogram for that is a general downward trend as they by but still the most popular at five point three six percent and most popular by a wide margin by the way uh the next most popular is you probably would eagle be unsurprised learn is the pixel xl so the trick is here if he can bind the first generation pixel and pixel excellent one they do beat out the next to six feet but if you combine the next is five accent sixty they did out the pixels so the the pixel and picked selects l are very popular on site and you have to take into account the fact there significantly more expensive than the five x and six p were so you will newfound clearly still did pretty well among enthusiasts i would say of of android despite a lot of balking at the prices and the you know purported major issues thumbs at which were really overblown um i would say as we go down the list here the one plus three is behind the ipad technically at one plus three is the number seven device i guess you would say counting the apple stuff i'm at two point one three percent and then from there we get problematic so um oh there's actually a broken use region for the pixels i forgot so actually the pixels.
