"The election campaign with ten days to go. That's plenty of time for him to make up lost ground. Thanks very much for joining us. James thank you jason pleasure. An hour outside polic- the capital of georgia. A group of women discuss being pregnant with boys. It's very strange. One says the attitudes from doctors when you go get an ultrasound and it's a boy. Some of the doctors expected tip or encouragement money. That's because until recently sex. Selective abortion in favor of boys was common in the country. Rica khordad z. From the united nations population fund has been working with women in georgia and says doctors will often express pity if the baby is female because if he goes to get an ultrasound and they already have two girls in advance and the third one is also grow this as they say for you Sort of showing sympathy that but there are signs at less than such attitudes in. Georgia are changing. There's been a preference for sons in georgia. For centuries writes about foreign affairs for the economist. But when georgia was a part of the soviet union they didn't have access to sex detecting ultrasounds. That was in part because people couldn't afford them and in part because the west restricted export of the machines because some of their parts had military uses so once the soviet union collapsed about thirty years ago sex selective abortion and georgia really took off. But where did the underlying preference to giving birth to sons. Get it start. Well some traditional families feel like they need a male child to either carry on the bloodline and family name or they believed that sons will be the ones to take care of parents in their old age whereas daughters are going to be taking care of their husbands parents. I spoke with maka taverna and economist at to boise state. University's policy institute about. Why son preference persisted after the fall of the soviet union. And she told me that it's really connected the poverty in georgia poor. And when you don't trust your government when you are uncertain about your old age you try to make sure that you have some who will take care of you. And the since how. It is linked to power but in recent years the preference for sons has been decreasing. And why is that. There's a couple of reasons. I after the initial post-communist economic turmoil women's wages rosen georgia. That's beneficial and a couple of ways i. It can increase women's bargaining power at home so say a woman might be able to overrule her husband. Who wants to abort a girl and that's relevant because in georgia preference for sons is more widespread among men than it is among women when women earn money as well. It might change parents minds so that they think that daughters will be able to take care of them and old age as well to by now there are invite more girls being born yes so in the past few years the sex ratio at birth and georgia has basically gotten back to normal. It's hovered around one hundred seven boys born for every one hundred girls and if nature takes chorus one hundred and five boys are born for every one hundred girls. So for instance in neighboring azerbaijan. Where sex selective abortion is still. Rife a hundred fourteen. Boys are born for every one hundred girls and in china which is probably the most famous country for sex selective abortion. It's one hundred twelve. And what does this tell you given that. Those kinds of statistics are got a proxy for how women are viewed in society. When it with that. Tell you about georgia these days. Well it's not yet. A feminist paradise the sex ratio is still skewed for third children and in some rural communities. I spoke to a group of women about the issue and not one of them could convince her husband to join the conversation. So that shows that there's still some work to be done when it comes to son preference especially among men and even if attitudes do grow less sexist jordan's still are going to have to face the consequences of previous diocese in nineteen ninety. The average georgian woman had two point two children but that really decreased throughout the turmoil of the nineteen nineties because parents were just nervous about the future and sex selective abortion and georgia took off by two thousand one. The average georgian woman was having one point six children and next year georgians. Born into the most skewed birth cohort are going to turn eighteen. Some of those men may need to emigrate if they wanna find a bride. Thanks very much for your time jason. Thanks for having me. That's all for this episode of the intelligence if you like us leaders rating at review and see back here tomorrow..

"Partly cloudy, low 56 degrees tomorrow Sunny high of 78 Thursday Sunny warm a high of 80 Friday Sunny warm a high of 84 on Saturday. Sunny, breezy. A high of 88 degrees. It is currently 63. If you're feeling a little more forgetful lately, you are not alone. There is growing research that shows that the pandemic has impacted our memory. A recently spoke with memory development expert at UW Madison Haley Block about how pandemics stress and social isolation have negatively impacted our memory. And how we can get it back. About that The pandemic is pretty much a perfect storm for forgetting Many of the experiences that we've been going through over the past year caused forgetting, for example. Anything our normal routine. Our normal routine served as the basis for a lot of memory cues. Like what? To remember when such as one of my home or when I'm at the office. We had to create a new routine that takes a lot of cognitive effort and creates forgetting. Many of us have been multitasking. We've been challenged with care, taking and working all the same time. We've been socially isolated humans. They love us, but they also serve as cute for memories. And then finally, unfortunately, many of us are experiencing mental health issues, and that also He's up the rate at which we forget. So researchers have long studied how all these different factors speed up forgetting, and unfortunately, the pandemic has just thrown all of the Mattis at the same time, bottom line and guess what can we do? We're kind of coming out of the pandemic right now. What can we do to sort of ease our way in back to society and sort of lesson that stress and increase our memory? Good news is there's lots of things you can do. Some of them will probably be obvious because there's lots of research on it. And it's been a public announcement everywhere is to get outside exercise. Then time with people if you can. Those are all really important factors for improving our general health, but also our memory, more specific things that you couldn't do ours to start creating new memories. Practice getting out there being in a new context with new people or new places, whatever it is, do something new to get practice acquiring new memories Because if you do that, when you go back to your new normal, you'll be better prepared to create those new memories. And then finally, he is a good news here, which is that you won't have to do a lot to get your old routine back when you go back to the office or when you go to where you used to go all the time that that old routine it's gonna serve as a memory. Q. It will come back. The memories are still in there somewhere. So that muscle memory it will come back quickly. If maybe you were at home. Working from home and you're coming back to the office. Don't worry. Memories will come back. And that memory that his memory development expert at UW Madison Haley Block, All right. I feel a little better. Experts I've been talking to the last couple weeks can imagine. And I think Donald Trump with that much spoilt e. Among 70 80 million voters has a lot of options, and I'm the first thing I would look forward to see if he starts a political action committee that will give us a sign that He's going to stay in the game. How do you interpret it? Joel Polic. It's interesting. I think he wants to stand with his supporters He wants to advocate for his policies and It's also an outcome of the reality that he may face an impeachment trial in the Senate. We don't know if they're actually gonna hold that trial, but the White House has certainly preparing for it, and I think one of his defense strategies will be To argue that the article of impeachment which by the way is deeply flawed. It suggests a cause and effect relationship between the speech and the riot When the riot started before the speech, and there's a new article in The Washington Post that the people who launched the riot had been planning to do so for days, so it wasn't Trump's speech. That incited them to do what they did know Mitch McConnell apparently is siding with the Democrats on this. What did you make that Which is why you know what? I think Mitch is time as the leaders come and gone. Yeah, Look, he's gonna Play the spotlight for a while, Mitch McConnell, maybe trying to use his quickly dwindling leverage to extract some concessions out of Democrats. Or maybe even out of the White House is Trump departs, But I think Trump knows he's going to be in the spotlight for quite some time, and he's going to portray this entire impeachment as a political exercise. You heard. Chuck Schumer just today, saying Trump can never be allowed to hold political office ever again. That's why the Democrats are doing this. There's no reason to impeach a president who's out of office, especially on such a flimsy basis. Nobody likes the fact that the capital riot happened and there are people on the conservative side even Trump supporters who disagreed with the challenge to the electoral college results. But the charge itself in the impeachment article is so flimsy Chuck Schumer, let the cat out of the bag. This is about taking trump out politically. Jo Pollock. Thank you. Off limits. Okay, he'll take them. All right. Joel Polic, our guest tonight, author of one of the preeminent books. On the election of 2020. It's called neither free nor fair. The 2020 U S presidential election. The Kindle edition is out there now. Senior editor at large, Bright Bart Mr Pollock Happy New Year Welcome back to the show. Thank you so much and happy New Year to you, Joel. Tonight you'll join us live and we'll take some questions. What e guess now, with some time and distance, we talked about your book and obviously the election. E think shortly after. What now with some time and space from it is your kind of 30,000 ft view if you were to summarize it. I mean, the issue is your word. Yeah, I'll just give you my quick take at least here in Pennsylvania. I think it was so violently mismanaged and unconstitutionally managed the words stolen. I'm sort of uncomfortable with only because it was almost white out in the open abused from a constitutional perspective. It's hard for me to use the word stolen because it was just so obvious. It was such an obvious abuse before you could even call it stolen. Does that make sense? Yes. I mean, I would almost call it legally stolen sense because the changes to the law That were made. Democrats a huge advantage, and some of those changes happened in Pennsylvania before the election. But of course many of them happened during the election while things were still ongoing, while people were campaigning, and they happen through the courts, rather than the state Legislature, and that's one of the things I talk about, But I also zoom out from this question of Voting procedures and voting fraud and then look at the environment more generally and You really can't have a free and fair election in a climate of political violence. You can't have a free and fair election when there's censorship of key information, as happened down the home stretch in this election, so I go through all of the other factors as well that made this election. Neither free nor fair. Now I think it will obviously be remained remembered also for the capital right, which happened last week, which I think was really unfortunate, and I think President Trump after the Electoral college. Let's vote on December. 14th really ought to have conceded and I said at the time, but we'll also have to look at this election in a larger sense as an experience never to be repeated because of the many, many abuses as you put it, that took place along the way. So, Joe the events of Wednesday, huh? Yeah. Are you Are you satisfied? Um How do I put this? Are you satisfied with the story that this is strictly? I don't. I don't like I'll just lied again with the statement. I don't dismiss or throw out the idea that there were there were people that just lost their ever loving minds that were legitimately trump supporters that did bad things. That is true. They've been found. It's a fact it just happened. But I do believe there were subversive elements there that have either not not been found or having. I mean, I've taken phone calls from People that were there that were on the ground that were said Chris. They were just They were bad people. They're doing bad things that were not part of that day. I just believe that's true. Do you Well, I think it's like some of the black lives matter. Protests. I mean, I heard Friends, liberal friends here in Los Angeles. How are well meaning people who went to black lives matter? Protests, you know, and I disagree with them on the issue. I don't know that it's offensive by the way, and I don't think people should. I think people should try to Personal relationship separate from politics, but I don't hold them accountable for the riots. Nevertheless, There were people who came in and rioted and destroyed my town and destroyed. Doors and vandalized synagogues. Now I could hold my friends accountable for that and say you were part of this demonstration. You're part of this movement that was Destructive and violent and caused billions of dollars in damage. And it's probably going toe hollow out America's cities for for decades to come because People are moving out to get away not just from Corona virus that they're moving out to get away from this. You know? A lot of people were well meaning and they just had a different idea. I guess then you and I might and I think that's the case. Unfortunately with the capital riot, I think 95% of the people Went to Washington are passionate about democracy. Passionate about the Constitution really believe that something bad happened and wanted to have their voices heard. It probably didn't really even expect to see a change in the electoral college vote, But they wanted to show this work for the president to support for our Constitution. And yeah, it was hijacked by people who See that they're Trump supporters and you know they associated themselves with Trump. Some of these rioters who smashed through the capital doors are wearing maga hats and so forth. It's a complete discredit to the rest of The movement behind Donald Trump, and unfortunately, what both political sides have to learn. I think Republicans are the only ones really doing any introspection on this point, but what both sides have to learn is that You really do have to organize protests Better? You have to take responsibility. That's what an organ high school used to do. You know the old civil rights marches they had monitors. Make sure that the participants Were well ordered that they were well behaved that they did not get out of hand and also that they want about the source. I have to say this also, you don't know what party did. When the tea party would have rallies if he party got wise very quickly to the fact that there were provocateurs who would show up. And you know, MSNBC cameras would follow them around and try to say, Hey, this guy with the skinhead tattoo, he's part of the tea party. It's just a bunch of white supremacists and the tea party activists. Got clued up real quickly, and they would follow these provocateurs around with giant arrows. You know, saying this guy doesn't belong here, and that kind of discipline and organization is needed. In protest. If you're going to make sure that we don't lose control that you don't give into The kind of element that shows up to any large gathering and tries to take it in the wrong direction. I think the difference is that you're seeing Republicans..

He had one year and I could have had some of those wide receivers. I think in the game against Michigan, so I don't know how you can assess somebody for the next level based off of the talent around them. That's that's the hardest part, like the hardest part is understanding that just like Justin Herbert, I think is the best example. You mentioned because Justin Herbert played in the scheme that sucked And by the way, you look you look at Justin Herbert. He is. He's just like Trevor Laurence, Including the hair like Big, tall, strong, athletic. You watch him throw a football You like Yeah. Yeah, I'll take it and then you watch the system and how it was built the hell is creating? You're like no, This is an awful system. They don't let him play free. It was all our pose, and he's really good at it. You don't live on that in the NFL. Joe Burrow played quarterback like an NFL quarterback like so and then Herbert played the system. Ohio State veteran receiver like Ohio State they have all these checks and all these all this athleticism on the offensive side of football. Justin Field just wasn't using it. If Justin Fields plays like that, we're in for a heck of a show down. He just has a tendency to play. Different than that and more aggressive and make more mistakes and not see things as clearly. Freelance work grows amid Covid-19
"Going around these days, The future of work is now the pandemic has turned million's of us into virtual workers. And there's another trend that's been less obvious permanent full time jobs, going freelance that severing ties between companies and employees as NPR's Orry, Berliner reports. Diana Gil was having her early morning coffee at her New York apartment when the messages started coming in from the boss's office. Can you get on a call this morning with the president? And then, of course, I knew what that meant. She was being laid off from her job as executive editor at Tour books. Gil was given a month's notice, and she had plenty of projects to keep occupied. So the new reality didn't register at first, but then May and I was like Well, there's Cove. It's so there's certainly not jobs right this minute. That's when it sank in. She was a freelancer. Her 24 year career as an editor at New York's top publishers was over. Now editing book, like Manuscript is a specialized skill. So Gil has been pretty busy so far. But she was thrown into the much less secure world of freelancing where the money and gigs are unpredictable, freelancing this feast or famine so kind of comes in waves, and I know at some point there'll be less of it, So I'm looking at that sort of what to do. I had to sort of make it. Work is a business making it work is a business becoming a free agent. That's the challenge predicament, however, you want to phrase it. Facing many Americans. The percentage increases are alarmingly big. That's Julia Pollock labor economists with the job site's IP recruiter. Zip recruiter tracks the proportion of job postings that are temporary rather than permanent, And it's kind of dramatically during the pandemic. The share of temporary job postings in communications, for example, was was only 12% prior to Kobe. It jumped up to 48% in April and May and though it's come down a bit, it's still very, very high. A similar story and feels like HR, and advertising and marketing. The junk was from about 8% historically, to 28% Post Cove. It part of the shift is predictable. When the economy is shaky and the outlook uncertain. Employers are reluctant to hire permanent workers and now tools like Zoom are creating more flexibility in the workplace. White collar jobs can be done anytime, anyplace by any capable person with a phone and a laptop work is untethered from the office. So workers don't build personal connections with their bosses. I think now you know, lots of companies are starting to think like, Hey, maybe we don't really need these full time employees. Stephanie Coddle is the founder of Black Girl Group of Freelance staffing agency. I think now you know these cos they're starting to see like, Hey, having these folks at home is saving me money. Hey, I don't see those people. So do I really need to be given them benefits as the recession dragged on the axis, fallen on a wide range of workers. And some workplace experts say a lot more white collar jobs will be done by contractors probably forever. But starting a freelance career after getting laid off isn't something people do by choice, says Connell. You almost begin a freelance out of necessity. You don't have time Tio, you know, cry or be down or depressed because you lost your job used to have bills to pay. And those bills don't care that you lost your job. The freelance economy was enormous before the pandemic. And has grown even larger during it. Two million freelancers have been added in just the past year. That's according to the freelancing platform upward upward study claims a majority of freelancers who started since the pandemic say no amount of money would convince them to take a traditional job.
