Spittin' Chiclets: Featuring Stanley Cup Champions Alex Killorn and Pat Maroon

"About confident free agents Biz while. Tab Maroon is once again an unrestricted free agent after winning back to back cups and I think we should send it over to him for his unique perspective on winning cup. Let's do it tied Maroon folks. Joy. now come on now is just the third guy of the expansion era to go back to back Stanley Cup champions with two different teams. He wanted of course last year at Saint. Louis. And he wanted again on Monday with the Tampa. Bay Lightning. Any certainly appears to be having one hell of a time celebrating down in Tampa congratulations on Stanley Cup number two, and thanks for joining us on spitting chocolates. Patty Maroon. Extra I appreciate it. Thanks Boys Arrived what an intro it's been a crazy couple few days as you can tell through my voice but. I still can't believe it. I it. It's nice to see you shared on first off. I thought there was no chance. You weren't to keep that going for the pod going to take it off, take it off of start. It off right but. You're speaking to your body. I heard you were having a sumo wrestling way offs with Ovechkin in the fucking. What's happened there? Who who had their? known everyone had me and and. I mean it was it was honestly what tonight that was to like. Doing way off with Ob and you know said there. Now of other boys I, mean it was not man like the whole the whole time. So it's good to hang out with those guys and actually have a couple of drinks get their personalities. Just who would ever thought I mean yourself. Acoustic. Saint Louis and to bring a cop to your hometown, and then you're you're not resigned which I trip them the other day I said, what we signed this guy fucking signed for nine hundred Tampa right like Jesus Christ but I digress. But then you go over to Tampa you've new John Cooper fifteen years ago whenever it was like just take me through your thought process on everything that's happened. If you really not even had the time to sit back and think about how special this has been. I mean I've had time but as you guys know the last. Few Days I've been. Pardons grank it. I've been bamboo go myself a couple days. So no I mean I had time. I mean when Kook got the call and he? When he called me, I got the call from it was you know he was like, Hey, what are you thinking about coming to Tampa let me talk to joy on Jimmy. Call Conversation with some other teams in the work but until then I wanted to go to a team that I wanted to win on and. And I thought Tampa. What they went through last year was I thought I can help their locker room I'm not going to help them on the scoresheet every single night but I know I can help them stick out from their teammates they can play a little bigger you know like Kuch can play bigger Tyler Johnson Stammer, Polat they can all play bigger and feel comfortable they have no No someone that can protect them that knew that a group That one at all and and I know I had history with winning Kooks. So was just icing on the cake. So I think he needed is good luck charm to win that cup for. You're too modest about the scoresheet thing because you're picking off sauce in the final game a mid air in the neutral zone. How good that one feel That felt good. How? Those are some Sekhmet Sarah, you look like, Kucherov on every single fucking bad pass that goes around him. He's like he's like the video game. If you just put it in his vicinity, he's going to find a way to get it on a stick in order to make a play. That guy is ridiculous. Kucherov in when he's in warm ups. Going like sixty percent and then that's a game. percent. Sean areas give me a shout out to about my stick. So. I can't complain about that. Now I mean fuck I don't know I black out there they go ahead my hands up in their bitching at the bench is you're telling me to get off and I was. Still made the places like shut up I know how long should be here. This long enough best partners I thought Volkov. It his first game and I was going nuts. Now's like who scored that I go to the pilots Coleman I was like Oh shit maybe I should have changed. Unreal that we've talked to other guys about the day to day aspect of the bubble and obviously you guys one in a great view guys. But how challenging did a gift? Not necessarily you but just the daily day to day grind of every day the same thing over and over again. I'm in it was a grind for sure. Are I think the problem is like? I'm so used to. An old but I'm used to leave an anthony every single year obviously the year before stayed in St Louis but I always used to being away from family. And I know some guys were asking me questions you know what it's like and it's GonNa hit home for you when you're two weeks and then a month and in a bubble that. You're a month and a half man and your family you can't see your kids and. And then when you get into. Yourself closer to the Stanley. Cup or the conference finals here trying to get your family Americans can't come in, but the Canadians can. Kinda sucks, and but we came together as a group during that whole time Toronto. We had Polka Ball. We had We had tennis courts. We had a pool outdoor We had like five restaurants. We had the beam oldfield where you can go over and play Spike Ball. Soccer football play catch. You know there's kind of a bar outside there's a restaurant open there at five o'clock. So we had we had thanks to do and trial. Then when you got the advertisement was kind of. The we call it the prison yard, which it wasn't, but it was a cement concrete where you can tell why guys in Edmonton were struggling probably more than the guys who? got the free ice caps. So I heard. Horton's. Best the. A free double doubles in the front. And So yeah, I mean it was. It was tough at times for sure when you're sitting there grinding your way, but we're fortunate to have a good team. So we never felt like we were out of it and I know you guys touched on a bit like when the teams down three one, three two or you kinda thrown in the towel just to get home like we didn't have that feeling we had a feeling. We're like we were wedding every single game and we're never done in this series resides in Boston down beside besides Dallas and so we always knew we'd find a way so. We're going home mentality attitude we came together. You know obviously. You guys know hotels you you. You have a few drinks, but it's Kind of hanging out and you really don't have anyone Cannellino beside yourself and your body is at your part of the team. So you kind of have to make make ends meet and I thought we did a good job with that.

"Komo morning. Aubier all stained safe. Just wanted to start off with just just with a reminder. I mean obviously we're going through the the Calvin. That doesn't seem to be. Easing Polat, but our attention is more drawn by the. Protests the the murdering. George! Floyd many many other people. Many people get in a stood up by this year. Myself included. I just wanted to bring up the basis of Buddhism So we don't lose sight of it, because that not basis is going on twenty, four seven. No matter where the circumstances or good or not somebody. was saying to me. You know why why you doing these practices. The China appreciate these excetera. To appreciate peace but it goes a lot further than that The, Buddhists, basic teaching, which obviously Zen is an outgrowth. Auburn hasn't changed since the time of the day really hasn't changed for religion either. doesn't matter what religion you are. They're still. The fact of of suffering. As a Buddha. Apparently said the implication of suffering in Sanskrit Pali. Was this one here is stuck axel wheel? In other words. There's something not quite right you know, so go to look at look was actually going on. Internally, we also we do the eggs to fairly easily but it's important to see what's going on and to check. The at that. Suffering can be either accepted or even more importantly if it can be a mechanism to change, which is the the most important thing acceptance is one thing. A lot of people miss Categorized, but his same was just about acceptance of the way things are what no change to so without current situation you know with the Covid retreive mitigate, try and prevent the spread These we see we see what's actually going on. And we do it, we can. Then we obviously change with a new information's comes in information that we find we try and innovate wherever we can't and communicate in various ways. with the with the protests which? our right as citizens of the United States for those of you in Europe. maybe doesn't quite appealed to you at a p to you in the same way as well we go in through over here right now, but that that is right in constitutionists amendment. We have a right to protest we have. That we won't. BE targeted all have violence against us. is human beings. Being in this country. We have a right to protest. Those rights have been threatened right now. Sensible van that goes around so. police bed that in mind. This is a right in our constitutional constitutions threat. I don't take that lightly. And their amendments further on about black lives matter. Those should be respected. Those should be upheld and practised so that you ought my political stance on political in the sense that I feel evil. Guy Never goes, and there is a sense sense of sadness with with all of this. We have a constitution. The many of us we think will yeah. Now we did it. We did it, but asked to be hauled, appalled and practice. That's one of the hardest things. Of It. You know that practices twenty, four seven. We can enter into many different ways. So anyway going back to the second pot as a cause of suffering. You know there's a cause of suffering then this possibility of an end of suffering, and this is what we can do, but the important thing is to engage in that process the first thing. is to look at why that suffering is a rising. To put into into process those practices that really help us through this. Remember religions, which when I say religions a main. the original meaning that they think rely the would. Religion comes from which is religio which is bringing back. Thoughts are all over the place and then bring him back that energy, so he can really see and appreciate what we have. In the in Buddhism, we say that. Nirvana is some Sahra or This? Piece the we live is the will that is occurring twenty four seven. The reason that we don't see is the we think it should be away.

"We're going to be tackling different wise to become a better person so in time right now where it's perfect to be. Y- doing some reflection himself work with a lot more time on her hands at the moment I believe that journey becoming better. Every day often talk about today better than yesterday tomorrow better than today and listeners rechanneled say well you keep talking about smarter better than tonight he. Can you give us a few tips on how you do that yourself and go? So What Pink Gum Tommy with? What's happening moment with most of the world in Lockdown Oscillation? It's a great way to sit down. And say hey. Can I become a better person hacking on? Be Better tomorrow than what I am today. I WANNA share a bit of a framework for people to be able to make the most of the time right now to become the best versions of themselves and to become the best that they can be and remember that we talk about this in terms of personal professional and family that lives broken into the three areas of personal professional and family And as a person constantly on this journey of growing and I keep talking about. Journalists destination is a bit of a journey and today. I WanNa talk of what life is a journey full. Stop and I want to talk about fifteen ways to become a better person through the journey. So He's a ten point. I'll try not to talk too quickly. Which someone listening to say I do. And that's that's that might be strategy. Because I want you to listen to a few times that you know. Try and keep it at a good tempa. Pathetic number one compliment itself. It all goes with the positivity of your mind it's it's all about complementing yourself meter. We were very harsh. Inner Selves said of people that? I can actually on on myself at times and have high expectations of myself But we need to make sure that we're complementing ourselves if we WANNA grow every day and become a bit of vision we need to complement. Esso's doesn't mean that we're GONNA be fake until ourselves laws. We're going to be honest and authentic with ourselves but definitely make sure that we're taking the time to complimenting assets. Number two is making excuses. I talk about this little time. Speak Hannibal we're GONNA make mistakes. I've met plenty of them but I said of people united so make a mistake. I put my hand up in our own it. I don't make excuses. It's it's all about making sure that we're a cannibal note blaming other people united somebody else's fault. It's it's take. Take our ship and this will help you grow as a person number three is something that's is. I've been in a bit of a journey over. The years is letting go of Anga. There's going to be things that happen in our lives. That really upset. Us and anger is no more in logs. It's normal emotion however I am not a setup being on best and being able to grow as a human. When I'm able to let go of Inca and what I do there is see the problem. Take the problem on. I write it down. I love using pen and paper. You said that I write down what the problem is brought them. What is making me angry? So why what's leading to the emotion of anger and then I start dealing with. It helps me let go and if I can let go INGA QUICKLY. And then it helps me grow It doesn't hold me back at number four goes with obesity. Number three is practice forgiveness. It doesn't mean that we forget things but I do believe this comes with having a strong faith in in in practicing forgiveness. A lot easier said than done. Meditation has helped me a lot with. This enables me pause and reflect and really think about you. Know The positivity in practicing forgiveness because it helps me get rid of that anger or it helps me get rid of the negative emotions into being the best that I can be number. Five is all about being honest and direct. I mean I don't know any other way I set of people. You might not look what. I've decided that you can trust them. Telling you what I think you need to hear and I want people to tell me what I need to hear. Not what I want to hear. It won't people to be honest and direct with me just as I want to be honest and direct with them. Number six is all about being helpful. this is something from a book called the God giver from an Early Age. I read the book Cuba. And it's all about helping as many people as possible. It's all about. What can I do for you? Being in service being hospitality industry has helped me. A LOT IN. That area is being helpful. What can I do for you and I find that? I grow as a person when I'm constantly putting myself in a position to be helpful for this Or Two honors. The other one is listening. Thomas you know in a world where we do a lot of talking fund that it's important that we will send listen making sure that we listen to people and giving everyone a voice and making people feel valued and heard It's important to allow others to feel valued and hood and if they're not being within valued and I think that being a good listener changes your loss in a positive manner. Over the years I've worked on becoming a much better listener to others And this is something that I've had to work on very hard because you're in a position of leadership you constantly during a lot of talking but actually when I beat focused more on listening to others that it actually made me that a person that made me later and it also helped me grow as a person. Listening to others is important. Number eight locally. It might not seem like a big deal but if everyone does a little bit species current terms we're talking about everyone does something act larkhall in urine becca on whether it's donating clothes cooking for somebody helping somebody get their shopping out. Whatever it is is just do something for the community to show them that you K- And that starts locally it has to be tackling. The big things acting luckily doing something doing a good date of some sort whether it's buying somebody coughing. The line behind you whether it's dating close to the local charity or going shopping is a sit before these are things that can help you and we'll help you grow as a person a number on his be polite said to people that. I can tell what somebody's like when I take him to. Lunch or dinner and have that trickle white staff always be. Polat is is you know. Being thankful grateful holding elevator doors letting people through just a kindness to sit a lot about a person when they're being Polat Rudeness is not is not something that's going to get people very much in the sent me doesn't allow people to grow so being polite will help you grow as a person ten is all about being yourself making sure that you're always yourself your authentic self This is something that's really really important and yourself will be based on your values and your beliefs This is what shapes your identity. So you really need to know what your values and beliefs because this is what shakes your identity and is important in being the best version of yourself. Eleven is always about being open to change so the pointer at number eleven is to me is about be open to change. The world is constantly changing things in our personal professional and family life change constantly. We need to be open to challenge for not open to change. Then we can't grow and that's why we talk about journeys versus destinations. Everything's about journey. Every day is going to be different. Some highs some lows. I'm better some worse but constantly a journey and life is mission in moments so being a change will ensure that you can adapt and grow as a person. "We look specifically at a controversial Isreaeli company called the NS. Oh group valued at nearly a billion dollars. That says it developed a hacking tool that can break into just about any smartphone on earth. NS oh licenses. This software called Pegasus to intelligence and law enforcement agencies worldwide. So they can infiltrate the encrypted phones and apps of criminals and terrorists problem is this same tool can also be deployed by government to crush dissent. And so it is the Pegasus has been linked to human rights, abuses, unethical surveillance, and even to the notoriously brutal murder of the Saudi Arabian critic, Jamal kashogi. Headquartered in the Israeli city of hurts. Leah NS oh group operates in strict secrecy, and I said to them but co founder and CEO Shalev Julio has been forced out of the shadows. And not into a good light accused of selling Pegasus to Saudi Arabia despite its abysmal record on human rights and the word is that useful Pegasus to them. And then they turned it around to get kashogi how she'll get murder is horrible, really horrible. And therefore when? I I heard they're accused nations that our technology been used on Jamaica Shuki or on his relatives. I started an immediate check about it. And I can tell you very clear we had nothing to do with this horrible murder. It's been reported that you yourself went to Riyadh and Saudi Arabia. You yourself sold Pegasus to the Saudis fifty five million dollars. Don't believe newspapers. It's that a denial. No Pegasus is so expensive because it lets thirties do what they long couldn't break into smartphones remotely making everything in them completely visible all emails contacts and texts new old encrypted or not Pegasus allows detectives and agents to track locations, listen into an record conversations, basically turning the phone against its user in the company's eight year history. They have never let cameras in. But they wanted to show us. They're like any high tech company. Playstations and Polat. But there was a lot. We couldn't show notice. No faces the work is top secret. And some employees are ex military intelligence and Mossad Pegasus is such a sensitive spy tool. NS oh has to get approval before it can be licensed to any client. Let alone Saudi Arabia from the Rayleigh defense ministry as though it's an arms deal. Why would the government of Israel want? You know, what seems to be an enemy to have this technology a mobile talk about specific customer. But I can can you say that you won't and haven't sold Pegasus to a country that is known to violate human rights and imprisoned journalists and go after activists, I only say that we are sending Vegas in order to prevent crime until. So he moved to the left side of the ice to try to help kucherov breaking the puck out and it force Coburn to play. On the right side. And there was some mix up there, and they weren't able to get the puck up the ice and break it out cleanly, and it resulted icing. Pointed Monaghan the rate of domestic. We're in kind of a similar spot as to the other night in Winnipeg Kelly lighting up one on the road in the third period. As we reach the second half of the third period. Let's see how this one unfolds. Stamkos. Seen a lot of the brain point line. Now, it's going to be stamkos that he's matching up maybe with more in this period. Stammer won the draw again, but they false started. Now one. You guys are allowed to stay in their stamkos gets tossed. So it's Tyler Johnson. And more of that. This is the union. Stamkos Johnson and gourd Johnson wins the drop more about stalled into the right point. Sweeps of the Yanni, Gordon the debt. Protects it walking to the left circle uses for headman left corner. Tampa Bay with thirteen getting a couple of good looks to from the point because have hit the crossbar came at seventeen thirty one early on in the game. Then seconds after that, Steven stamkos missed it. Right over the net. But he was getting some chances, and you could tell stamkos really looking to shoot the puck. Early and often which is a good sign. He's had great career numbers against Detroit. So isn't the key kucherov? Those two guys looking to fill the net a little bit more here in Detroit who's had some experience on the back end. You think that is a a match made for those two. "Lightning radio nine seventy f- LA, Tampa, and w wax TB HD two Clearwater. Well, Phil has left Greg. We're gonna be talking or hearing from said downstairs in a minute. But look the game aside. It is what it is. Frightening played. Better than the Panthers in the first two periods in the Panthers. Play better the lightning in the third period. And they ended up winning by one. But really I think the question coming out of this game. The first question is what's the status of couture off with his injury. He left only played in the first period. The second is did any players help their opening night 'cause there were on the bubble tonight. And did any players hurt their opening a cause? And and I think Phil made some various observe Asians, Matthew Joseph slotted lake. The thing about Joseph that we hear is like he's kind of a guy who can be used in variety of situations. So he's played kind of a bottom six role in some of these preseason games. When kucherov went out he went onto the line with Polat and point and particularly in the second period. He looked like he slotted in very nicely there. In addition to being a guy who can kill penalties, which is something they've used him in that role during the preseason. So I thought that personally he had another very strong game tonight as did Cherniak who again game wasn't perfect yet icing. I remember the third period, and you know, he took a penalty. But he's engaged. And I think when you're engaged you're noticeable in in a good way, he was noticeable tonight, at least to me, I think regardless of who they keep their fourth line is going to be drastically different than the one that ended game seven against the cap race. You're going to get pot cat Kunitz Callahan. You're going to get you're going to get some grit. You're also gonna get a lot of speed. And you're going to get some guys that maybe have more of an upside offense now with that maybe come some stakes because they're younger players. But in today's NHL you need four. Lines that can get up and down and to your point Joseph's kind of a hybrid right him. He can play third fourth line. But he also can plan a first and second line, which is really interesting and Ernie continues to fill the net. I mean, that's that. That's important part of the game. They don't consider him a bubble player, but he would require waivers to go out and all of that. But but he's a guy that clearly I mean, he has an established himself in the NHL consistently does. And it looks like he is well on his way to at least having an opportunity to start on the fourth line when I say play consistently. I don't mean his level of play be consistent. I mean, he needs to be in the line of Sicily. That's kind of what I was. I mean, he's even talked about that. He's like look I haven't really established myself at the NHL level yet. I I need to to be consistent and to your point about the questions just going to become a defenseman. Did they wanna keep and be if he does stick is he gonna play right? And I think that's what's best for development is to play. Whether it's in a more sheltered rolled the NHL level or is playing regularly or playing a lot at the age level. But maybe not maybe the feeling is that you know, he's a guy can help team. Ultimately, it's about who's get your team win also developing, and maybe you know, he's in a situation where he does sit for some. But also is utilizing NHL practice time in NHL coaching, and you know, doing the video work and getting into games as well. But it's almost those all those questions will get answered well with time and it's feast or famine I think with defenseman right because a young guy it's either all in or go down to the Syracuse pressure play with a forward. You can play it to ten minutes tonight. Maybe you're not playing eighteen but you're still playing that different. Well, we know John Cooper sometimes does dressed seven defensemen some create that opportunity, and I kind of feel that this conversation about Cherniak in some ways similar to the one. We were having this point last year about surrogate have kind of like what's best for him. And that was much more black and white because he would have had to go back to his junior team. And clearly there would have been no benefit to him going to his junior team. So we started the year with lightning, but he played regularly wasn't like a situation he was playing for one sitting for two or anything like that. And he got off to a great start as well, which helped kind of push that narrative for you. And I were talking about this, and we want to go to the next segment here, but they really don't have a defenseman. Like a back though. I mean, he's big physical. I mean carbon. Maybe it's the side though over I mean, right handed shot. I mean, he's in some ways unique circuit was unique in some ways. Turn well, Greg. We'll talk to you in Orlando. We'll call it a road game a home game. But it's a road game. You'll be you'll be there. So look forward to talking to you for sure the Amway center would be fun for me. My third preseason game. Are so nice location or to have great. All right. That'll do it for me will step aside. Come back. Greg all the rest of our post game show along with Eric girl and said thanks to everyone involved in tonight's broadcast back in the lightning radio network studios. Jason Barringer and Reggie Davis. "Goals on the power play that's a pretty high rate but at the same time mad you can't go in worrying about that i mean you don't know how the referees you're gonna call but i just think the devils have overcome their power play lake you can't shut down everything that tampa bay's doing well okay so they're going to score a couple on the parkway better know let them score five on five and that was the key the other night it was as the line that had given the devils a lot of trouble during the first two games was limited brayden point into andre polat were not as dynamic as they had been in those first two games and so the devils lean don leaned on the travis jack line at points but john heinz set this morning that while jack line gets credit everyone must contribute kook twitches lines around a lot in the in the second and third so i think it was a really a collective team effort and so that's something we have to be aware of is that sometimes the line matching works it's and it's good but if the opposing coach you know we switched our lines around a little bit sometimes in tampa and he did the same thing on the road to try to get the mismatches or or or get the players away from it if they possibly can so it's about the players playing through it but it's also having your team collectively they need to understand when certain guys are on the ice and there's certain decisions you have to make or the attention to detail you have to play with when certain guys are there and i thought our group did a pretty good job of that when we didn't get certain matchups and that's one of the things i love about john hi data's counterpart john cooper yeah they can motivate their teams but they're pretty good tacticians too and so it's an interesting chess matches you pull one player off a line just to give the other guy something to think about home ice advantage helping as the home team has won all three games you get that last change things like that it's been marvelous to watch it has i make john sing with the coaches are saying okay you media whoever.
