America Has a Drinking Problem
"Okay so when exactly did american start drinking. Was it at the start of america. Yeah literally so the reason sort of unbelievably or one of the reasons. I should say that. The mayflower landed at plymouth. Rock is because the ship was running low on beer people back then drink beer instead of water or they preferred it to water. Same and the sailors freaked out. And they thought that at the rate that they and pilgrims. We're drinking the beer. They won't have enough beer to get them back to england's so rather than sail on to the mouth of the hudson which had been the plan they pull the shore and kick the pilgrims off and that is why the pilgrims landed at plymouth rock. Of course the truth may have been a little more complicated than what was indicated in their diaries as they complained bitterly that winter about the beer and having been kicked off there were other things going on it was december. The weather was bad. The food was running low but the beer was a big part of the picture. People are dying in there. Like where's the booze yeah right. So william bradford who would go on to be the governor of the plymouth colony for thirty years that winter in his diary couldn't stop talking about the beer dearest diary. It has been another long and thirsty. Day here at the plymouth colony. How i long for the cool sweet feeling of a droplet of beer rolling down my throat part. That's not real. Almost half of the pilgrims were going to die that winter and the is what he was worried about now to be fair people back then. Were very leery of water. There had been problems with water. Purity in england and they thought that beer was safer nonetheless. They really enjoyed their liquor

"Would it is Joe Man Randy savage? This factor in there is no one that does it better now. Nobody does it better myself. Go ahead tell me something right down not a rate morning. Welcome to another episode of hard b-actor presented by the Barstool News Network. It is Tuesday February. Eighteenth Twenty Twenty and today is a long lightning round of headlines Covering Corona Virus Elections Plymouth Rock in the latest business news. And I'm going I so let's get started with corona virus as lightning bolt. And I do not apologize for that. So today's update some new stats since the US started turning a band passengers away at the border. We're up to total of one hundred and forty rejections of people trying to get into the US places with the corona virus so that's the trump administration keeping them out Tennessee Golden. Well it just a few feet away and die. What were they go? They just start. They're not allowed here. It's like you don't have to go home but you can't stay. Here's Cuba available. You do have to go home. We right I mean. Well we're putting you on a plane back to somewhere where it's like. Yeah we're like the the bouncers so anyway that's what that's what the trump administration is doing with that On top of that The current infection total worldwide is seventy one thousand with seventeen hundred and seventy-five reported deaths. Only five of those deaths so far have occurred outside of China so how can Iowa not fucking town caucus but we know how many people have corona around the world? It's a really great point. Question has a good question. I don't think we do know the number of. Yeah no no. Yeah these are wanted to just want to. Make Fun Iowa. These are bullshit numbers. And it's worse. It's gotta be were so but before we get to the bad part in good corona virus news the World Health Organization says quote more than eighty percent of patients have mild disease and will recover. Fourteen percent have severe disease including pneumonia and shortness of breath. Five percent have critical disease including respiratory failure. Septic shock and multi organ failure and two percent are fatal. So it's pretty beatable unless you're old and frail but the bad news is that the World Health Organization still has no clue how long the germs last on surfaces and how long the incubation period of the disease are well of the viruses. That's problem yes. They don't stop spread. You really need to know that. Let's that's like important for when you can have voyagers on the diamond princess again. Never when you can. I really believe that. Lysol is stepping up and doing something about this because this is this is nice all that would be expensive asked Lysol territory. This is their time. This is their super bowl. Germs on services. If you're in that business and you can add we'll ninety nine point nine percent chance of destroying corona. You'RE GONNA product that badge on your product flying off the shelves Chinese though is you get a giant Lysol can that you can just spray over the entire Globe disinfects the whole thing. Where is that? They have that in China. There was a rumor that it was bullshit. Talk the The big trucks that were spraying Hong Kongers and blue and put like the pesticide stuff. Inserted SPRAY MATT RE purposed. Yeah proud to be in America. You gotta you gotTa do it takes so speaking of the Diamond Princess cruise ship guys the forty four people they got Medevac Back to the USA for from the Princess Cruise ship that we talked about yesterday they got taken over to California military bases in California and then also San Antonio well. Fourteen of those people tested positive upon arrival for for a phone of ours. That's thirty two percent than of those forty four then. We reported Zik while they were on the ship. So it's safe to say that we were talking about earlier. The caseloads probably way higher in areas. Where the where. The virus is being actively transmitted than what's being reported because anyone on why San Antonio like why why San Antonio military base they gotta go somewhere and we feel bad for these people. We hope they recovered but fuck so close. Yeah it's not not knocking for Texas so you guys have. I don't know how many of the fourteen of of the sick ones are. Just GonNa assume eleven. Yeah there's my my fucked up brain just jumped to eleven and I'm sure you're because there's no way. Krona virus could sustain itself over the mountain Nevada climate. Oh yeah no it's okay. They're not bringing it over here. I think all the way down in San Diego. It's they got a mountain chain. It's a long. That's a long way way far south digging into the Internet American lawyer Matthew Smith. This is the man who refused to leave the diamond princess cruise ship. We talked about yesterday who he may call. This is different guy different guy. His name is Kent and his wife was Rebecca Kennel. My Yeah Different Guy. This New Guy New Guy Matthew Smith anyways. He's an American lawyer who staying on the Diamond Princess cruise ship. He refused to leave because he said that it was. GonNa be a bad idea and that you could probably catch it on the flight home whereas he can stay on the ship for just a couple more days and get cleared of not having the virus then leave if he stays on the ship and so he says on twitter. Omg US government Said they would not put anyone on. The plains was symptomatic and they ended up knowingly and intentionally putting on fourteen people who actually have the virus decision not to be evacuated equals best decision ever. Okay now that's smart. And if it was fourteen people they were all on the same plane like unless all of them went to California Alderman at San Antonio. He's right that means most likely the a lot of those people are pro probably symptomatic now on those planes but sleigh correction. He will have to do a fourteen day quarantine in Japan before he goes home. No matter what still safer I gotta take your guys. I think you said he's a lawyer. I bet he's a personal injury attorney and he's probably hanging back on the ship to get some cases the way he's talking sounds like he's trying to class action together. This is ripe for a suit. He could be doing that. He's really Hammered up though on the ship because like after that Brag about how he he made a great great choice and fuck the other people who got the crow virus on the plane He he Then started posting all of his awesome meals that he's eating in solitary confinement. He's really Kinda I duNNo. Matthew Smith is very very proud of himself for this choice and I you know Kudos to him. So he's got he's got like a bloody palm and has nothing to do with the Free Webcam Horn. George James Whoa look at the big brain on Brad Nice. They sound like Boston holes instead. They don't have they sound like the original cruise destination. Year right exactly. Yeah the Nina. The PINTA was the other one. Santa Maria there you go. "Zero four. In the. Listeners. We don't know if Plymouth rock exist in your time, presumably the rock will be there. But maybe the succession of because egos Muslims have fallen over one of the namesakes of the rock. So there are a lot of things named after the Plymouth rock, and one of Plymouth rocks namesake's is the Plymouth rock chicken. There's a chicken named for Plymouth rock, which is one of the most popular chickens, it's a sort of grey, barred chicken, that lays Brown eggs and for a time was, I think maybe the most popular egg-laying chicken in America. And again, it was sort of bread developed in the in the late eighteen hundreds and it's entirely possible that future lanes are all descended from Plymouth rock, chickens. They're great singer. Are they going to be insulted that we tell them that they are amazing chickens, but named for crappie rock? Well, for all we know by the time those chickens ruled the roost. They may have developed technology to actually get the rock in, in its entirety in its cemented together in tire out of the harbor. They can move things with their mind. Yeah. That's right there. Like they raise up the x wing fighter out of the swamp and actually put the rock somewhere, where their fellow chickens can see in that case Plymouth rock would have literally landed on, like, Malcolm X set. That's right. We didn't land on Plymouth rocket landed on us. I can't believe we got through episode about seventies patriotism, in civics, and you did not mention schoolhouse rock, once well, and that's where school house rock is where I learned the preamble to the constitution. It's where I learned the whole process of Bill going through congress. Is there a schoolhouse rock about the pilgrim stuff? I'm not actually. Sure if there is me, I'm going to do the tro while you what you get yourself. Okay. Go ahead. Even Plymouth rock has been levitated to a different place by super intelligent chickens. Social media. We assume will be dead and gone. Another crappy sofa sized relic of our time. There is a plume of there is a schoolhouse rock about just, just in its called, no more kings. Do you remember that one kings rocketed a role in split in splashing over the horizon? What can it be I get complaints? When I don't validate your schoolhouse rock, nostalgia. Did you know that right? Yeah. People right? You and say, how dare you not be older generation xer? It's like when people think you don't appreciate the puns, and it's really or you didn't get the no I get all your just like do, do I try from the beginning of the show. I've tried not to validate your punning and it I it I feel like it only encourages you. It's getting the same thing about squirrels route, and I'm trying not to encourage you to, to references to take everything go out. John, and I were on social media. He was at John Roderick that Ken Jennings on Twitter and Instagram, collectively, we were at omnibus project just about everywhere. You can think of not on Facebook, but we did support the future. Ling's fan group, we are not carved into the face of Plymouth rock. I wonder if someone ever will be. Like little mini mount rush- man William Bradford. And, and elder. Have their little heads carved into the future Ling's Facebook group, currently arguing about the French revolutionary calendar. And telling me that there are there's cocaine in shrimps in rivers rooms now because it's filtering down through all the cocaine on hundred dollar bills. I would assume so getting into the rivers, it's getting into the shrimp. And you could Email us in our time at the end of a project at g mail dot com to send physical artifacts chips of Plymouth rock you that you think John or should I wonder if there's a secondary market. Now, I wonder if these are now prized items since you have been able to do it for one hundred million how you'd have to have quite a considerable documentation of Plymouth rock. Absolutely right. Surpri lot of spurious tips of Plymouth. Rock out there do not fall for that future Ling's but you can send us physical objects of any kind by mailing them to the project. "Thomas Pons, who is the son of a colonist who arrived in sixteen twenty two. So not one of the very first but within a given. Yeah, but I mean if he's ninety five he's probably one of the last links at this point to the to the generation. That's right. When he was a kid growing up there were, I mean all around him in his community were original pilgrims and his father was very early on. Thomas says, wait, the place you're going to build this peer covers up that great rock. And let me tell you that my father, he's got lower. My father said that. That's the big rock the rock where the pilgrims I touched land. And he said, I'm going to send this very long story. He's telling where he mentions a lot of people, the listeners don't know, because I have met people in their nineties, he does a better job than that. He says, before I die. I would like to see the rock won last time. Oh, and so. So the young men of the colony in seventeen forty one put him in a chair a regular probably an eastern Ellen chair that would be worth eighty thousand dollars. Now, the original Adirondack chairs and they lift him up, and they carry him quite a distance down to Plymouth harbor, and you can imagine word goes out, and everybody says, oh, this is great like elder phones is going down to touch the great rock before he does doing transparent. And so they carry him down. And he. Reportedly, like sheds some tears upon the rock touch though, the rock elder Thomas, and they and they decide then that they're not going to build the peer over the rock. They're going to build the peer slightly down from the Robert again not from any actual thing. They remember from this very touching thing of an old man sharing story. He heard right from his father, who heard it from original Mayflower, colonist sure his father arrived, and they were like, oh, yeah, CO alerts the rock. So if we're keeping track here original colonists, tell his father who tell probably. They're just sitting in sixteen twenty two there aren't that many of them, right? So they're sitting around telling their stories, according to elder phones, Thomas's father tells him decades later, the town father, nobody else mentions it in all that time, it is now four degrees of separation from any possible. I witness and everyone's like, oh boy. Plymouth rock. He's ninety four and he's sitting around by fire thinking, no one ever come. To visit attention to Thomas anymore. So he's sitting on his porch and some young guy walks by and says, how are ya elder fonts and he goes, well, not so good. I'd like to see the old rock one last time. What are talking about? So at that point, it becomes a celebrated rock, within Plymouth, and in the great style of America after a while the residents of Plymouth, not content to have their great emblematic rock just sitting out way down at the beach ninety percent buried under sand decide that they're gonna move the rock. This is the American spirit. This is it this. We're going to improve this in seventeen seventy four. So these are revolutionary times. And there's a new fervor of patriotism patriots. The symbolism of the rock is very meaningful now. It is. And we're now one hundred and fifty year one hundred yeah, fifty years later and in breaking away from England. Where now very interested in this kind of symbolism and I'm not interested in the Susko centennial of Plymouth pilgrims, like in seventeen seventy was there, a big thing and did that help inspire a lot of the kind of fervor for independence. Right. You can only imagine that it probably would have been true. There were, there would have been tall ships, of course. But because they're always there already. They just ran a different standard of the poll. They were just no osmond's. They went over to province town. It wasn't yet a gay summer mecca. Or maybe it was it was gay in the whole time or both, but in seventeen seventy four. You can imagine there giant rock moving technology was still in its infancy a. How do you what do you do with Iraq that, so they dug it out and attempted to move it into the town square where they, you know, of course, this was the shining rock..

"In an event called king Philip's war, a local tribal leader was like, wait a minute, like and not motivated to push them off the off the beaches and back into the sea as much as realizing that they were making alliances with some tribes that were in competition with him for resources and you know, and, and that series of skirmishes lasted for, for really a couple hundred years up through the war eighteen twelve rider, the French and Indian wars, at least through the revolutionary war, but Plymouth colony survived, and only survived by the skin of its teeth. But by the time fifty or sixty years had passed it, they the colonists had established of a strong foothold they built a lasting community. They had made. Row relative alliances. There were now at an an archipelago of other villages up and down the coast. The Dutch arrived, the Acadians arrived. I mean there were there were a lot of there was a whole network. Boston was flourishing a colony had been established, and it wasn't until seventeen fifteen almost one hundred years later, then ninety five years later, that the first mention of climate rock appeared in any of the many, many documents generated by this, this initial, we have plenty of records of the Plymouth poems. But for a hundred years, nobody mentions Plymouth route nobody mentions it. It's not a suspicion. It's not really a thing among the colonists themselves. And in seventeen fifteen it is mentioned as a feature of the Plymouth harbor, but only as a great rock, which is. Is on the beach in Plymouth harbor. There's no connection to the landing, so even even people bringing it up or not, like, and as we all know they're just describing the age. And and, you know, also there's a, you know, over to the left of the great rock behind the big fern is where I hid the eastern. And again, if you were heading a lunch toward the beach, you would not aim for the big rock know exactly the rock itself is one of these sort of glacial anomalous, Roth. What do they call us an accidental? Is that what? Glacial. Yeah. Accidents, right. A rock just deposited by retreating down there. And that's where it stayed when the snow melted. So it's not like a particularly rocky beach. There's not a ton of these, it is a landmark, but it's only in seventeen forty one now a hundred and twenty one years later, no one can remember. No one remembers there's no surviving colonists. But in seventeen forty one there's a suggestion that at Plymouth, they build a peer or there's a plan to. Build a peer because at this point boats no longer wash up on the beach, nor do they dock at a at a rock. They were they would like a big peer there in order to show, silicate, commerce gotta have appear even though Boston harbor's just right up the way and is a proper harbour Plymouth is always make is always sort of vying for status probably fishing boats leaving from there. And it makes sense but during this project to build this peer of an elderly resident of Plymouth town by the name of Thomas fonts, who's an elder in the community who's ninety four years old short for rally. Yeah. No found like the fonts. I think it's. Yeah. When I when I see it spilled. FAU NC. What french? Yeah. But it's probably so some old crusty new Englander name. Thomas Pons, who is the son of a colonist who arrived in sixteen twenty two. So not one of the very first but within a given. Yeah, but I mean if he's ninety five he's probably.

"Don and saw him. Once were there. It may not. This. How old were you in nineteen seventy six our nation's bicentennial love talking about the bicentennial? I was only two years old. I don't remember the tall ships. I don't remember the whole ships in Boston Harbor. What else would I not remember? Well, it car, probably car salesman in Sam outfits. It was a celebration that lasted the entire year. But in particular, the nonstop party, nobody slept. It was America was just going wild. We want a year fervor and grand funk railroad. It was in particular the lead up to the fourth of July starting early in the spring of that year. It really consumed the attention of the nation, you would have been six or seven years old. I was I turned eight that year. So I was seven and I was in second grade, the perfect age for a big national party. Right. And one that was as clean cut as the nation's bicentennial. You know, we had come out of the sixty. De's and Nixon. And we had Jimmy Carter nail. And we just wanted the osmond's and the Mandrell sisters to sing the songs of this great land. We really hoped that our great national nightmare nightmare was behind us. But as part of that there was a lot of revisiting kind of fetish ising the revolutionary war, the, the pilgrims and the colonial period, do you think this is one of the seventy year old tea party guys from early two thousands? Bought those three corner half, ho entrance. They had those in their addicts from the by centennial. That's why they had all the gear they could just go get it down from their boxes says bicentennial. I feel like a lot. Maybe some of that reenactment stuff started. Then I mean, there was quite a bit of that Paul reveres ride one, if by land two if by sea. I mean, I feel like kids were top that stuff in school as a matter, of course, up until that point, but they the country itself really doubled down on, like I say, I was in second grade in seventy five seventy six powder wings made a comeback. So we really were choking on that stuff. Well, that's that's big in elementary schools anywhere. Maybe not so much now, maybe it was more our air where you got a lot of Paul revere. Ethan Allen check it out. Daughter is learning about Harriet Tubman. She has never heard of Paul revere. That's an improvement actually reveres over hyped. He got caught. He did. It was his buddy. William does that actually got through? We just Paul revere scans betters along. Fellow made us remember this guy who, who did nothing basically, although not to disparage the memory of Harriet Tubman. But she probably saved as. People as Oscar Schindler rights. I mean escorted that number of people but it's we're talking about a thousand or tears thing. Paul revere ride around on a horse for what ninety minutes, Harriet Tubman riding around the south for a year. Under underground trains, for years. Well, three years three. Oh, no. Wait a minute. No. I guess she was doing that before the war. Right. So. Yeah. For a while, I would assume this an I believe that my daughter should be. Nathan HALE a little. Yeah. We didn't learn about Harriet, Tubman as much now, maybe if maybe at the bicentennial of the civil war in two thousand sixty one or while haven't thought about that there's gonna be a civil war by sentinel. Probably in my lifetime. Well, yeah, there's like a lot of by Centennial's that are going by all the time like the honest odd bicentennial. We. What did you guys you for the advice intending? We, we had a barbecue. I mean we missed the war of eighteen twelve bicentennial although you missed it. I didn't miss it. I was I was out of town. Yeah. There are a lot of I mean, really what you're seeing now because the boomers still control the media's the fifty year of everything or the sixty. Here's the fiftieth year of sergeant pepper. Your pets downs. Woodstock. They tried to do the sixtieth Woodstock, right. And it just felt it's not cannot go in well, I are festival, but all of those little talismanic emblems of the revolution all were kind of elevated again into the national consciousness during this by centennial, the radios, just five music. It ruined percent of the time. No, no. That was a civil war reference. Two..

"And so I'm expecting like this massive cliff with like a massive boulder, and some sort of plaque in a monument in something like, you know, you hear about this in the history books, and it's sort of there's this mythology about Plymouth rock in the Mayflower. And of course, you know, that that mythology has a different connotation depending on how the pilgrims interacted with folks who who arrived, but seeing the actual thing. I don't know if if any of y'all have seen it, but it was so tiny and disappointing. Like, I don't even know how to it's probably going to say like eight feet across and maybe like two feet wide, and it has a sixteen twenty on it because the year of the Mayflower, and that's it. Right. Like, that's that's Plymouth rock. And I don't know why haven't seen any pictures of it until now, but I was just as appointed always thought Plymouth rock was a metaphor. It seems like a metaphor for all colonizers. That they have delusions of grandeur and things may be smaller than they appear when it comes to. I don't know folks taking over your land and engaging in genocide, and in slaving, people, etc. Etc. The really crappy part about maybe not Plymouth rock. But certainly the snow is that there are furloughed workers all across DC who just got hit with the snow. And so like for folks who are already having trouble making their bills having to stock up on groceries being stuck in the house kids being out of school, all of that really racks up and here, we are at the point where I do believe we're now in the air of the longest shutdown in history. Is that right? It is officially the longest government shutdown ever. Yeah. Yup. Which is indeed shameful especially given that it's over made up crisis fueled by racism and xenophobia, and that Britney because many news outlets says we have been talking about the shutdown and who the shutdown has been affecting how it's been affecting them. And we're hearing all these stories about tens of thousand. Hundreds of thousands of people who were struggling who are going without a paycheck who might suffer from like, very real material ramifications in terms of not being able to feed their family people will be victim from their homes people already making choices between food and medical bills so on and so forth. So I think it's important that we know if this is having a real impact on people's lives and one of the spaces that it is continuing to impact people that we do not often hear about is prisons. So for my news. I'm talking about some great reporting that's been done by the Marshall project and they've been bringing attention to an eliminating how the Federal Bureau of prisons is currently operating without funding because the government shutdown. It is furloughed up to half of his thirty six thousand person staff, including.
