"Welcome to amateur traveler I'm your host Chris Christensen. Let's talk about Devon and Cornwall. I'd like to welcome to the show. Ryan Duffield from Devon who has come to talk to us about the city of Plymouth in southern England and also the surrounding area, including Devon and Cornwall. Ryan welcome to the show. Thank you very much. Thank you for having me Howie. Good well, you know and it's funny because we just talked about the English coast, but we've moved a little further to the West and talk. Talk about a different region of the coast than we did on the show recently when we talked about Suffolk and the the downs. Why should someone go to Plymouth Plymouth? Actually it's a fantastic city. It's a city that goes amazing maritime history and tradition that dates right back to the medieval times, but actress quite often overloaded when people think of cities in England. They think oh of Lunden Bama again. Manchester Liverpool perhaps. I think Plymouth is just as much. Interest is end if those cities, but it's just north of us so much, and I think particular twenty American. Listeners interested is also the city where the pilgrim father set sail on the mayflower. Sixteen twenty associated with the traditional thanksgiving. S Pre interesting point. Is also surrounded by beautiful coastline. It's right on the border of the county's of Devon and Cornwall these are two of the most popular tourist destinations in the UK down in the South West of England, said Scott lost offer. Willing we're looking for dividend cornwall if we go down to the English map and you go far bottom left. That's where we are, and if you go further bottom further left from there, you end up in the ocean. So we're. Right on the south coast of Devon Oklahoma so are literally facing out to the Atlantic okay well and facing out towards the south. Yes, excellent well, what? Are. You GonNa. Recommend Fourth Festival is obviously starting in the city centre, so the city is actually pretty much based around the coast and its large harbours, so I would say starting day Sutton Haba, which is the main harbor in the city and that so where the city spreads out from I'm from around the. You've all sorts of things to say side. You've got things like the mayflower steps. Steps, which is where there's the pilgrim fathers actually set sail from and this museum dedicated to that you've also got what's the Barbican? which is this old coupled street state specs, medieval periods, which is full of these is correct, slim pubs and bars, restaurants shops things like that, and it's one of the few passes cities. The city was actually bombed June. Sacramento War by the Nazis and the. The city was destroyed, and this is one of the well preserved areas of that city out, also recommend site just basically following the coastline of the city's known as Britain's Ocean City for good reason, because it will revolve around that and overlooking the area. What looks like is huge, fool trust, but what actually is actively operating? Royal Marines and Royal Navy base. That's right in the heart of. Of the city and they still have people that you can save people, training and things, and they actually do tours of that interestingly and I'm not sure how many military basis you can know many Abitur tour during the middle of the day. You can't do that well and it seems like one of the reasons they do that, too. Is You mentioned? This is not a new military base. Quite historical, so this is where the ships sailed out to fight the Spanish Armada for absolutely, and the city is very synonymous with Francis Drake. Who is the man who led the defeating of the Spanish the? He was from Plymouth. Things like the main shopping center in the city named optimus could drake circus, and you'll find lots of other places around the city named after him. You also have along. Along the Bob sell them this coupled medieval street. You have the Plymouth Gin distillery, which is actually the oldest gin distillery in the country, and of course you can go in then you can have tools that you can find out how the GIN is made. You can find out the botanic WHO's they use? Jin's at the end of that. So if you're GIN, Fan Pathak place to go we'll. Get into more detail on all these things. So in terms of the BARBICAN. For instance you mentioned the Plymouth Gin distillery. There are different pubs and things. Do you have a favorite pub? Is there someplace that we ought to check out? There is a place I feel bad commending it, but there's a web spins now Weber spins is a national chain across the country. If you live in the UK, you know about web of Spain's. They've actually got really nice bar that down on the Babacan. Babacan, which is right by the Plymouth Gin Distiller Selfish Nickel Jin from that, but they've got huge selection of our genes of a drinks there, but all the buildings there because they're all medieval style buildings that is then become ingrained within the actual itself garnered sovereignty. Highly recommend that this is places down the thyroid record. Think of any off the top of my head. Okay mix over a new kind of places and very traditional old pubs as well which great.

"You can go there to get up to speed on all your race. Car needs from Chuck and Matthew Before we sign off I do have a little segment of direct connections that I like to call the six pack and it's just a speed round of a I don't know if this makes any sense but this or that question so I want both you guys to answer these so it's really simple. It'll only take a couple minutes. You can go in-depth with your answers or you can just give me a one word answer. It'll be pretty quick and pretty fun so the For all right okay. Ready all right. The first one dodge or Plymouth Plymouth Plymouth. Alright Four twenty-six Hemi or Hellbent Elsa four twenty six twenty. Six nine nice okay. Here's here's a good one hurst. Hemi DART or Hurst Hemi Barracuda. I'll say dirt absolutely Barracuda. Love it. Love it now. This one is a little controversial. Because there's so many different opinions six point one. Hemi or six point four Hemi. I'll have to go patchy six point four all day. I I guess I think I gotTa go six four. Because I've I don't have a whole lot of experience to six. I've I've heard I've heard rumors that the six point. Four dozen handle boost very well. Now I don't know how true that is because I'm not as experienced as a lot of those guys involved with that but I've seen these six point one emmys get crazy amount of power in some of these like for example the W K one grand Cherokee. Rta's I've seen these guys. There's a couple of companies out there that have hundreds of thousands of miles on these jeeps was stock bottom ends putting out you know four digit wheel horse. Our which is insane to me and the and I've heard through the grapevine that six point four don't handle the crazy amount of boost like that as easily so I don't have you heard now it's actually true the the cast aspect of the Pistons and the powdered rods are really the biggest enemy. But if you go with a good h beam rod and a forge piston in a six four and especially if it's be BG block. It's is in some cases as good as hell cat stuff but the good part for all of us is that the markets continuing to make a lot of aftermarket choices. So that we'll have million hemmings to start working from And I think that's the part we need to rejoice is that we've now we've got quantity absolutely. I agree with you on our percents. Okay next one modern challenger or modern charger modern charger. I I like the modern charger because I I like the idea of the four doors and still having a ton of power. It's just it's it's been a cool idea to be ever. Since they came out. I thought it was so awesome. I'd I'd have to go challenger only because I feel like we're still celebrating the e body designed by supporting that car but given I've got so many children actually should be choosing four door. You know I I. I'm kind of torn. I at first when the charger I came out. Of course I was like afford. Or what are we doing here than the Challenger followed and I was like okay. Well that fills my need for the two-door and I love them. Both I think that the designs of just gotten better with time. I think they're doing a great job. Actually sit here. I'm scared when they decide to go outside the box a bit. I don't know when that's going to be. I heard in twenty twenty one or two or three something like that. They're going to redefine the car. That's scary to me. But hopefully they don't change it too much but I've been saying since the start of this podcast. I want to see a new KHUDA but You know with Challenger. I've always thought. Maybe you guys can give me your opinion on this with the if they came out with a new cooed. I would wanna see something completely different than the Challenger and I. I wouldn't mind I went. I thought that something similar to the sixty seven to sixty nine Barracuda a little bit smaller a little bit more compact especially with these power plants that they're talking about you know the turbocharged four cylinders and the six cylinders and things like that. I think there's a lot of room to work there. If you had the option of you can kind of like with the The new challenges and so you can get a v. Six or you can get all the way up to you. Know a six point zero Aamir. A six point two supercharged. Hell cat engine so I would like to see a car that speaks to more than just the muscle heads. Because I know that there's a market out there that just for some reason. I don't think that Lopez has gotten to yet. You know as far as the tuner market goes and I think the Barracuda or the KHUDA would be a pretty good foot in the door for that now. What do you guys think about that? Yeah I like that idea. I think too in the absence of the viper that they would they would have an opportunity to be able to fill. Where the where. The hole in the market exists today because I would agree with you heartedly the Challenger and in many cases the charge are very very much feel like muscle cars and back there labelled as such but they don't necessarily have a sports car and they've got the power plants to make it work so I'd say go after it and makes something unique to agree with you feel. I definitely say one thing I think would be really nice to too is the fact that they could go with an entirely different platform. Instead of like the traditional fastback looked.

"So Mark You were just getting into the story about. What was the town that this happened? Bradford was the governor it was. I don't know it's mentioned in here somewhere but it was governor Bradford and I think this was Jamestown. Maybe it was the other one. I don't know the less industrious members of the colony came late to the to their work in the fields and were slow and easy okay. This is where he died. At least the other was split Plymouth colony than that sounds knowing that they and their families were to receive an equal share of whatever the group produced. They saw little reason to be more diligent in their efforts efforts the harder working among the colonists became resentful that their efforts would be redistributed to the more lingering members of the group right. So what do they do if they're resentful. They're going to cut back on their effort soon. They too were coming late to work and were less energetic in the fields. I mean anybody who's been the manager Jour- knows that you've got to keep some kind of integrity around the start time for work. Sure because if you don't then you know some people people for being late. Somebody's coming in fifteen minutes late if somebody can come in fifteen minutes late and still has their job and everything's fine and twenty right twenty half an hour our pretty soon Just show up when you want work as long as you want Leave when you want and that's not gonNA work in most businesses Komo. Somebody's gotta be there to open the doors. Otherwise the customers are GONNA get mad. That absolutely true I Worked at a Health Club at one point and those people that come in at six. Am I overslept. It's a bad idea to have a twenty year old opening your business up at six o'clock in the morning but I was doing my best and I did find for weeks but there was one day. It's just late. And what are you GONNA do. So the less industrious members of the colony Excuse me the fun. You're twenty and you're in prison. Yeah when you were twenty. I was in my twenties okay. Gotcha Yep The collective work created individual resentment has governor Bradford Bradford explained in his old English though with spelling modernized for the young men that were able and fit for labor and service did re pine that they should spend their time and strength to work for other men's wives and children without recompense The strong or men of parts had no more division of food clothes etc.. Then he was that he was leaking not able to do a quarter the other. What the other could this was thought? What in injustice? I'm adding a little bit here. And they're trying to make it more palatable. To a modern audience the age you'd engraver men to be ranked equalised way way labor labor and the food and clothes and etcetera with the meaner and younger sort Thought it some indignation disrespect unto them and for men's his wife to be commanded to do service for other men as dressing their meat and washing their clothes etc they deemed it a kind of slavery neither could husband's bracket it because of the disincentives and resentments that spread among the population crops. Were sparse in the rationed. Equal shares from the collective harvest were not not enough to ward off starvation and death. Two years of communism in practice had left alive. Only a fraction of the original number of Plymouth Plymouth colonists so it wasn't necessarily that they were randomly struck by some bad luck or whatever that the growing season didn't work out. It was that their political organisation. The station was a failure right economic organizations matter. They matter a lot and it's because economics is about human behavior and you can can see here that some people that are able to do more work don't like it that they are doing their work to take care of other people and people don't like it that their family unit has to help other people's family that they WANNA do it on their own. We can see human nature says that people WANNA share but but they only want to share as much as they want to share And they don't want to be forced to share once you're forcing people to share. Then it's just theft. I mean I don't know what else to call it. So that's what was going on here. Y- conscription yeah that's a form of slavery and that's what they were complaining about the part of the thing that you know communists have to eventually I mean if they're paying attention to there being honest with themselves is that they can't go against human nature nature they want to they. You know they have this grand vision for this massive sharing this experiment and this is like a you know a an experiment that they attempted in in this plymouth colony. The Communists think that you know they can they can if they can just change human nature that they can have this this system work and it. You can't yeah well there's also it's understood that it's not gonNa work if you start with no money right. You have to have some money to make things work and and the rich people don't WanNa come join and share even when you can look at the colts where people join and give their life savings well a lot of times. They just gives their life savings away to their parents or something like that and then they decide later whether or not they want if they really have some money they don't bring it in usually they might bring some But they're not bringing it all and you know the poor people can bring their whole life savings and here's five dollars and thirty five cents. I've got leftover from this week's Labor Labor and here I am to Start to join your cult so you know well the airport with you to try to give away paper flowers for money And I I remember reading an article like this about Thanksgiving and I liked the one line that said the Thanksgiving for the Plymouth Colony was less a celebration of a bountiful harvest and more the final meal of condemned men. And that's kind of what they're showing here with You know the fact that they they were moving into starvation going on realize who years later it said they were starving out realizing that another season like those that had just passed would mean the extinction at the entire community. The elders of the colony decided to try something radically different the introduction of private property and the right of the individual families to keep the fruits of their labor as governor. Bradford put it because it used to go into a common storehouse from was then distributed and that makes a lot of sense when you're setting up this colony. Let's just try to everybody. Everybody will work and everybody'll eat and it'll be fine but but it wasn't now because people don't WanNa work that way and so it's not to say they don't want to work. They certainly do want to work when they can be rewarded concomitant to the effort that they're putting into thing that doesn't mean they're not willing to help sick person or you know somebody else. Who for whatever reason can't Can't assist with the work that has to be chosen right and it's not virtual certainly don't like it when somebody else looks like. They're doing less work and they can work compare able bodied. And they're they're shirking their duties. This just drives down innovation and drive down productivity the toll. "Been engaged in a attention since the seventh century, but what happens when you invite in this is lamb assed ideology, which undermines all of western liberalism, which undermines religious tolerance itself. G k Chesterton said there's a thought that stops thought. And that's the only thought that ought to be stopped will the left understand that tension that essential conflict. There's so many others. We can talk about them all day. We don't have time 'cause thanksgiving's coming up but food for thought if we can get them to reconsider their feminist premises. What other premises will the left have to reconsider? We're living in the best time line. I tell you this all the time on thanks giving the university of Oregon is hosting an event called, thanks. But no, thanks. Wchs giving they hate thanksgiving. Why is it? They call it decolonizing. An American holiday the the description of the event the main messages of thanksgiving or that of gratitude food and family. However thanksgiving is foundation Lee speaking, a celebration of the ongoing genocide against native peoples and cultures across the globe. You knew that. Right. That's what you do. Go to your thanksgiving table, you sit down. Oh, it's so nice to see you anti may. All right. Well, let's raise a glass to the ongoing genocide of native peoples all around the globe. Let's Chin-chin huzzahs launch. No. I don't think. So that's not what happens. It's just not true. This is what happens when an entire generation is deprived of an historical education. And instead that historical education is replaced with ideology, the pilgrim's did not commit any genocide against the native Americans. It did not happen. In fact, the opposite happened. The real story is much more. Interesting. Christopher Columbus did not committed genocide against the native peoples. He adopted his Indian friends son is what he did. He didn't commit any genocide it just simply didn't happen. So from a an historical standpoint, their main premise is bunk. The real story that was so much more interesting. I have four ancestors who were on the Mayflower. I had one was a pilgrim doctor Samuel fuller. The other three were derelict's. They were strangers, you know, half the Mayflower were of these pilgrims who were godly men religious separatists wanted to start their own religious commun- and the other half were just guys who wanted to go into the new world. So three of the four were were those guys one of them eleven years before the Mayflower sailed Stephen Hopkins was actually shipwrecked in the new world. And that shipwreck was the basis of Shakespeare's the tempest he was a mutineer another one of my Gregory grandfathers. John Billington was the first man in America executed for murder. The francis. Eaton was another mutineer another troublemaker. So those three kind of shady fellas. But one of them was good in a godly, man. Doctor Samuel fuller. And so they came over the story of them arriving is a miracle. It is pure providence. There is no other way to explain it. They were separatists living in England. They then moved to Leiden in the Netherlands because they wanted to escape persecution. They were there for about a decade. And they started to get a little nervous though, because their children became a little too Dutch. They didn't like Dutch their kids were becoming. So they decided they're going to sail for the new world start their new their new community. Okay. They hire a captain, they hire crews and everything, but because of the religious tension between them and King James between them and the church of England there there were there was an attempted sabotage to stop the ships from sailing out. This delayed them by months, they finally make it out of England. But they're many months late. They sail across and they veer way. Off course, they were headed for Manhattan. They ended up around Cape Cod. So they had no land grant to that area. They land there. It's not nearly as spit -able. As Manhattan was they land, and they they couldn't find a good place to park the boat. So, but they get out there looking around. They immediately are approached by group of thirty Indians who start hurling arrows at them and miraculously, none of them was hurt. None of them had even a scratch on them after this encounter. They're wandering around. They finally end up at Plymouth Plymouth Horbert, they pull into Plymouth, and they find fields that are totally cleared..
