"You look for. And he's like. I mean i've always always said on heater adjusted. I'll speed because that is the max of the jong board. I mean you're geared up for ninety eight and he throws eighty eight. You're going to be ready for the but if you're up eighty eight and he does ninety eight. You're not gonna touch it so I feel like just having that approach keeping it simple hitting the positive top part of the baseball and you know that's pretty much it. I mean i i feel like just being able to keep things simple as been the be the best thing for me. Does it make more sense to do that now. Even just because of the way that philosophy plays right now individually just because you see like everybody throws mid gosh. Yeah i think the. I think the biggest jump Yeah just being able to handle the lost city. But i mean i think everybody can kind of go and look at the data of what hitters had to go through with the sticky stuff and you know you see people spin rates falling jozef to understand that when you're hitting these heaters are spin rate of almost three thousand. It's like it almost looked like if the ball was coming out at his shoelaces ending up at your chest like the perceived velocity and the perceived Expansion is just ridiculous so now to see what. The numbers have been In dealing with all that stuff now. I feel like now you're seeing the home runs. Now you're seeing like okay. We're these aren't as bad as we thought they were. You know it's it's I feel like it's finally getting back to that true That your baseball. You know people are getting checked and yeah. I think it's good for the game. I mean we that seemed like such. It was such a big story for like the kind of few weeks leading up to it and there was just kind of swarming and it went away a little bit. Yeah but has there been a lasting effect from the hitter's perspective. Yeah i mean if you. I mean go look at everyone's numbers this year like when these pitchers had these sticky stuff. It was making like pitchers that you know maybe have like a five or six year ago started. Uc's he's got two or three you know and so You know. I'm sure you guys saw the articles about spinner rate and all that stuff and the decrease into the klein. And it's like you know that's why there's a hi pow bora because you're when you're hitting in. The guy has all sticky stuff. And he's going to heater and it looks like it's one place in you look down in. It's not it's you know pretty much you you have to swing over fastballs and it was like what like but that's in you know to survive that era of just the sticky stuff like you got to think about. The hitter. couldn't survive that time to make that adjustment of all right. a guy has a spin. Peter of twenty eight hundred. My aiming point has to be here on a heater rather than here. And you know auspey pitches where even better right like you guys are seeing this stuff so yeah i just feel like i feel like i'm happy that it's it's getting policed. I actually the the way that you described. I remember. I specifically remember match. One of the early season zunes because we were still on zoom with the players describing it that way where he had to learn to swing above where he thought he was going to be which that was really eye opening thing. But i don't know how long that have been going on like. How long had you had to hit like. Well i remember back in twenty eighteen learning about it and learning about spin ray heaters. Because you know you get that one fastball. You don't wanna miss it right. So that's why you see so many guys clip foul balls that behind him or back that way and it's because you know as both coming in with the revolutions were able to do is just like it was able to pretty much rise up a little more than what you thought it was and obviously we're trying to hit a round ball round bat. You know it's hard to do so Yeah i think it was back in. Two thousand eighteen is. When i kind of i heard about it. And then that's when i started paying attention to hitters or pitchers rpm so all all our scouting reports whenever. We're going up to the plate. There's a spot that says fastball. what is spin. Aarp usually like guys two thousand like okay. That's a that's a pretty standard teeter. But it's like twenty three twenty four. Okay that means you have to kind of make sure you really concentrate on staying on top of the ball even more because you stay on top of the ball even more. That's what kind of gives us. We have the direction that you want. The other thing that stood out At least in the first half was Seemed like you were being more selective. Generally what led into that. And is that something. You're going to carry for just intensively being more selective. Yeah when i was coming out we have the city sitting coach name Darryl robinson and one of his things was we all want like he always treats be selectively aggressive. And you know it's funny how you write things down in a journal and it comes back to you and those are the things that you kind of build your approach around. Speaking selectively aggressive is something that always rings in the back of my head. Is you know. Obviously you want to get a good fish but you wanna be aggressive. Because that's the that's the swing that's gonna you get to do damage on and Yeah i think it's just an approach. I've just been super simple this year. I don't have a. i don't have a big sling. It's very compact. it's very short. It's very boring as you know what. I mean it's You know i get up there. And that's my stance on my low too simple but you know i feel like i've been able to stay around the big leagues for as long as i've had is because Just know who i am. And i i'd like i said we talked about trying to finish at exit velocity again. I hit home runs but also struck out at like twenty percent clip. And i was like all right. That's not what i am so I at the end of the day. I can say i try. So was this an important year for you. Just kinda like get more comfortable with yours. A hitter mirrors player. Yeah and obviously super blessed as gave me some volume to work with and to be able to mix in with some of these guys. And i feel like this year having the year i am. I mean you have to manifest all this stuff and put out in the universe and say every year is a big year. Every year is going to be a good year. I feel like that's kind of what happened. And you know. I wouldn't mind being a for a couple more years. Nothing li- last thing to ask you about being that we're in kansas city. Right now The the negro leagues museum is here and understand. You guys went and visited a couple of days ago. A couple of guys from the team was that for some that you've been in. What were your sort of impressions. The yeah that was the first time i've been And my impressions was you know. I know that how what those guys went through to be able to play the game that i love today as they went through a lot. And you know i. I went with chris. Davis mark cana We also we also went with josh harrison. So's tour guide was unbelievable. He you know the whole place was shut down a private tour and Yeah you gotta go. Were there things that you learn or saw there that that even resonated still today or you say it. It was still familiar. I guess yeah. I mean just the the amount of money that they have you know spending one dollar a day two dollars a day and getting on hank aaron getting on a train. 'em cross hitting his opposite hands hitting and all the stories and i feel like i just learned this. I think it was just being able to see visually. I'm a visual. Learn just to see visually as it was eye opening You know and like. I said you gotta definitely pay respects those guys. Because i wouldn't be here without warning. Kansas city next time together. "As accessible Where how much i guess. How would you describe or Qualified the efforts that that that organization has done in sort of what progress has been made there. Oh man i mean. I think it'll be in the players alliance degree to ten million a year some days donation for the next five years or something like that. I mean the next ten years. I think But yeah that just goes to show you. How much guys like curtis granderson c c sabathia Edwin jack's how much does guys really care about growing the game especially with you know in the black community and being able to provide these You know pieces of equipment that people who maybe can't afford it and you know i think one thing that stuck stuck with me as i was telling curtis granderson and he said you know there's gonna come a time where there's going to be a black kid in a community that gets a piece of like a glove or bat or some pleats and he's gonna make it to the big leagues and he's going to say. I remember at the pool up to her. When i got my first pair. And you know and that even if it's one person like that's what it's all about is like giving back in that way and To be a part of it's awesome ideas to talk to all these guys who've Obviously had great success in the game and also talked to him. You know through Instagram necessary been able to talk to see about the mental side and adversities of baseball. And how you deal with. The stresses and All these different things that you know. It's you know it's almost like killing two birds with one stone it almost feels like and Yeah they've done a lot for the game. And i you know it's not over yet one thing that you did and it was I think address was a local little league team or to say some literally athletes as it mentioned that what did you what was your message. So got a picture and they said hey. Our team name is the plus one affect our like man that is so freaking. Cool like You know to have a tavist sponsor to be able to do that. And it's i can't even put it into words. How cool it is and you know people might think it's like a lot of work or you have to do this. And honestly like my agencies helped me out with so much of it The boundary groups have been there at a dallas. They've been tremendous and helping me all this stuff. My wife's been you know tremendous and Because you certain line where you have to kind of cut it off and say i'm at the field i needed to concentrate on this and But honestly like people ask me about it and i said man giving back honestly feels natural natural. It feels like it's not that it has to be done but it just like yeah. I feel like the only. Have this platform this platform forever. You know so. Why not capitalize on helping people who can really help you back right. Was that the plus one affect team. Was that a bay area based team. Was that from someplace else. The plus one if they were in tennessee. They're intensive we where you're from frank. Lloyd brown and i know the i think the franklin school district kind of shouted you all the best school district tennessee. We'll be right back with more with tony camp. Or what was your route into this word against my definitely my brother Our just a little brother that big brother around and he played basketball. I played basketball baseball. We played three. We've played three sports for the longest time. I played three sports up until my sophomore year high school and then Baseball was kind of like okay. I'm not gonna go to the nba. i'm not gonna. I'm not gonna be a running back in the nfl like So i think that. I kind of gravitate toward baseball more because i feel like i saw more than once. I signed vandy. I was like okay. I think that there's a pretty good chance that you know i could make some of this so now here we are and your brother still an influence. I mean you referenced. Him earlier in the season with one of the home runs against the yankees. Yeah he He wants to get into coaching one day. He's got three kids so he's trying to figure out when he could do that but Right now coaching his son's little league team so he's enjoy it but he's he's he knows a lot about the game he's very knowledgeable and be able to bounce off hand. It was pretty cool skill for Just to shift gears a little bit. I mean you guys are obviously in the in the midst of a playoff push here coming in the last few weeks of the season. How the the last several weeks. I guess maybe month so probably hasn't gone as you guys would have hoped coming to the end here. But how would you sort of describe where you guys all right now. Yeah i think. I mean no doubt about it we definitely could be in a better spot but i think you know we've kind of put ourselves in a place of we need to win and nothing else matters and i'm gonna games are left. Eighteen eighteen games left. Eighteen games. Left gotta go eighteen kind of how it is but now you can't get it can't get ahead of yourself you've got to go to know and I think the good thing about it is is the clubhouse morale is still the same and People you ever certain respect for this game. 'cause you know how hard it is and you know you're plan at the highest level and You know things aren't always going to go your way we're still human and The thing about Today is brand new and we have a fresh nine today so Hopefully we can get some runs and get a win when you look around if you see the same amount of confidences maybe like a month ago two months ago or any of the season from. Yeah honestly think it's you know if it's if it's not high right now and it's it's pretty much the same thing you know. There's a lot of guys who've been in that playoff atmosphere and what it takes to get there. So there's no surprise in that regard. I just think that You know baseball's ugly it's ugly and it's beautiful at the same time when you look at your season We i think we talked back in seattle and something like may or june and modern colorado. And you had a really good kind of stretch to bring your on base percentage up. It said something like coming into the season. You really made a focus on looking for a certain pitch kind of selling out for that. It's just not trying to be defensive when you're at the point. Is that something that you continue. Throughout the year. because looking at the on-base percentage that you compiled over the course of the year. It's a sad from a little bit of a lull midseason. It stayed pretty strong. I think just talking with talking with approach and talking with jed lowrie. I mean we pretty much have the same approach and you know i. I never liked it. Really get off the fast ball You know if a guy wants to sit up there in three or four off. Speed pitches and get himself in a disadvantage count and then have to throw a fastball. That's kinda went. I'd take advantage and Yeah i think. I think the biggest thing this year is just being able to get your pitch and don't miss it And just being confident in yourself in you know this is the most volume i've got in my big league career and i feel like i've felt like this is what the production that i could give. If i was given a certain amount of time you know to get every day at that certain get at bats you know more than just you know to starts a week and you know even in the wrong and now i just think that you know were whatever it is. I know how good i am. I just know that given the volume. I know that.

"Yeah this the only thing that was one of the things that was great with seen like all the security and heinsohn's people especially the people that we didn't see last year when there was cove it so that was actually really really wonderful. The only thing that was weird wasn't weird being on the field which i thought it might be. It was weird when the game started. And i realized i was covering the team that was hitting first and that for some reason. That was the one where it's like. Whoa whoa wait. What's oh cover that team that that was a weird thing for me being covered the rangers for two years. So i've covered the the visiting team here before. So i guess obviously a million years go but shouldn't be that weird but i was. I was it was. I thought it was going to be strange. Not sitting in my old seat. But i was delighted to get there and find that they had given my old seat to the late. Pedro gomez. there's a little spot there. For pedro and i love that so somebody else's got my seat. I'm absolutely thrilled. That it's pedro officer matt kawahara That was always wonderful to talk to you on our joint podcasts and we will talk again closely into the season and figure out where both of these teams are heading. That could be very exciting. Or hey. We'll talk again. And maybe an october before bainbridge serious. That's my plan. I have another bay bridge series. And then maybe they can give back that little weird trophy. Do if there's a world series between the as the giants do they also have to give back the bay bridge. The commissioner's trophy. "As far as i know our trips plan he did say that. They are intending to plan a trip at some point but But the sense that i got from the language it was used was that they are looking. I mean they're working with the city of oakland to see if they can hammer at some of the differences there or at least the way that it was portrayed by cal was that there are working for working on some of the other aspects of the proposal like the environmental aspect and some of the other approvals that would need to get done anyway before maybe going circling back in trying to hammer out the last differences in the economic terms. So i don't know that there is. I don't know exactly what the timeline is there. We i asked If there's like a point at which the economic terms need to be agreed on And his answer was that he doesn't think that another vote would be possible until late or toward the end of the year so they have some time to to hammer out that kind of stuff and obviously the negotiations are ongoing and knows what goes on there but But you at least got the sense that they're still talking so i mean not to get too into the weeds but essentially it boils down to how much the infrastructure costs oakland pays. And that's the issues there. Some of the issues were about creating to texts districts to pay for it versus one and then there was a an issue about the affordable housing. That would be included. Yeah i think it's the the two major hangups were who would pay for off-site infrastructure costs that were totalling about three hundred fifty million dollars and then Yes the amount of affordable housing was included in the proposal. And the last that. I mean the city had come out and said that The idea of to infrastructure tax financing districts was not going to happen But i think they had suggested that the offset infrastructure costs could be covered in another way..

"A row and they get off with new york atlanta so that is not an easy road trip and then play the padres a ton down the stretch and you know the padres are in third place but this is still a t and obviously they've got some injuries and some issues and you know they've underperformed from what was expected but this is a very good team in f. I'm a team like the padres. i'm like. Hey we've had a rotten season but we can turn it around right now with with all of these games against the giants so Those are all going to be key and the giants are going to be going into those potentially a little bit tired about morte edition his brand bid for them You know he's had his. He's had some big moments here and there. It's not to the point where he is carrying them and it's not that kind of team anyway. There's such a a team that relies sort of on everybody And it seems like like you know a lot of their role player. So the guys that you know you've seen from all these pinch hit home runs so the guys that kind of wind up really playing playing major roles but yeah Especially as first week he was making a lot of noise. I suspect he's going to have a lot to do with how they do. Down the stretch. longoria coming back to Same thing i think he's going to be fairly significant Tommy lewis stella has been a little on the quiet side and we know that he really kind of pushed the as into the playoffs himself last year and then was probably their best player in that playoff series. So i think he will have something to to say with all of this but Yeah they are certainly a very you know at this point. I think we can. We can stop talking about how they're exceeding expectations. They're just a good team. If proven at time and time again and it's funny because it seems like the fans just keep waiting for the wheels to fall off in june. I spent so much time. Well try and ignore people going to swoon june swoon. And it's late august and they lose two in a row. The slogan webb said after the game today we lost two in a row. People were going crazy like what like what it was nuts like. We were panicking. I don't get it so Yeah i think this is a team. That's proven their playoff team. They just need to make sure they hang onto that top spot and and avoid the wildcard although the giants history as a wildcard team is not poor. Unlike the ace. I was gonna say the west in the race between johnson..

"Morning said skype to total. Sf wherever you. Listen to podcasts. I'm really against the idea that. Mlb is floated about moving the mount bath and all. It changes the nature of the game for me. But i do. I do get concerned now when we see the exit philosophies the game now between the maple bats and how hard pitchers throw you know. You can see velocities off the bat. Sometimes over one hundred ten miles. An hour chris. Bassett is a great fielding pitcher. He could not get his glove up time and it was. I mean that was one hundred miles an hour with the bat and he tried. I mean you could see like both hands went up yet and it just snuck through the two hands and cut him in the face and it's just not the do. Yeah so yeah. It was extremely scary and he was down for a long time and it was super quiet in that stadium. Obviously we couldn't i. It was really hard to tell them. And you could see the you know the towel that they were holding to. His face was bloody but you couldn't see the extent of the injuries because they kept the towel over his face and he had his hands to his face the whole time. Really the scariest thing. 'cause you see it happened in the moment and he goes down and you're not really sure what's going on there but it's really the reactions of teammates like sean murphy was the first guy.

"Yeah i thought that was a really interesting quote that he gave you about guys having a book on him now just knowing what is going to do so i don't know how much of a concern that is on. The logan web was really good. Today it's kind of an logan web and then a bunch of question marks recently which is crazy because guzman's an all star but yeah guzman's split finger doesn't have the action. He he's used to and guys are laying off at anyway so he has to hit the corners with it Which is not doing quite as well. And he's still. He's not kind of getting that late movement that he's used to on it so yeah he's a little bit of a concern. He's so good even with you know. He's essentially a to pitch pitcher sometimes even as a one pitch pitcher. He's still been effective. That's how good he is but Yeah it's not The starting pitching carried them for a long time. And right now. I would say that's the one biggest area of concern but You know the fact that they are not manufacturing runs and they are stranding runners. These are the sort of things that we've seen in oakland for a long time can hurt a team. Big time in september and certainly in a short playoff series over relying on the home room. When you're not hitting them keep telling me like what are you talking about over reliance. i love this runs. That's great like this. I don't know. I don't know if the.

Chronicle and with me as matt kawahara who was our as beat writer and we are just finishing up the giants and as series the second installment of the bering bridge series sierra. The giants take two of three at oakland first of all matt. What were your impressions of the series particularly of think giants fans look at it and go. Wow look at all that great late pinch hitting from the giants are the as perspective. I'm guessing the bullpen is becoming. Maybe a little bit of a question mark. Yeah i think they have to be really kind of frustrated with the series because they could have swept the series from the best team in baseball. There were a few outs away from it and the bullpen has been sort of like periodic issue for them Obviously it struggled kind of in the middle of the year but really for the last month and a half the bullpen has been really good andrew chafe and they brought in has been really good for them and he gave up two home runs yesterday after giving them one the entire.

"He'll they have a handful of their top prospects. Shortstops between logan david. Sanan a gallon. Who's off the olympics right now. Playing virginia say robert hassan. And and you know they just drafted another high school kid shortstop in In the first round this year so they have a little bit more depth coming through us. So yeah i mean. I think you know if you look throughout the entirety of assists in. I'm sure that they have some guys would be attracted to other teams if that's that's the way they wanted to go but yeah i think it probably has to be the right fit in always. There's kind of that That financial consideration for them too well to wrap it up. Let's let's just drop some names and obviously you start with the teams that are not doing well and willing to give up players and you know for prospects. I mean the twins in by the way doesn't josh donaldson play for the twins with all the move chapman. Too short put taylor rogers. Is there the the twin of tyler. Rogers with net be cool in. San francisco's bullpen. A mentioned the diamond backs but the cubs have all kinds of kimberly mentioned. kris bryant. You know boy if he goes The southern california kid. But i imagine he'd be willing to go to the west coast as well. You know you hear about joey gallo. And somehow the padres are all in on him even though their rotation is probably the the bigger need the rockies You mentioned trevor story. The marlins They have startling. Morte Trae man sania. The orioles tigers have guys robbie grossman about him in the outfield coming back to oakland but And and of course beyond scherzer. There's plenty of other Pitchers cale gibson. You've mentioned susan mentioned. You know the sunny gray susan. You mentioned danny duffy. But there's quite a few but he'd be he'd be my second choice. Actually maybe after even sure sir there are a lot of guys that are available. Just gonna cost so it's gonna be really interesting few days. John i wanted to kind of go back and this is also include. Somme stuff to what i mentioned about sadie which is interesting mentioning that he does not want to offend. Sort of the clubhouse chemistry. Can you imagine a bay area analytics Baseball team president of operations saying anything about team chemistry but he one of the ways he learned that was the suspect is trade. Which i'm not sure they will admit but It's you know that gutted that team And as a in both ways you know took the heart out of the lineup. And then lester came in and it was not a fit mc clubhouse i don't you know no matter what the higher ups say so They're going to be careful with that and that that alone can be you want. A guy you know will fit in. And that's i think for the giants is a primo consideration. Because this is unselfish. A-team as i've ever seen maybe the most unselfish team and that You know even just adding aaron sanchez. back which i expect to happen today in the bullpen or role. He's not really all that crazy about even something like that could be something..

"Jason you mentioned sherzer. So let's go there and my feeling is if surgery comes to the nfl west. Whichever team gets him the padres. The dodgers giants will win. The division needs that much of an impact pitcher now. He's thirty seven but he still in his prime He be a free agent. After the season there's a little money deferred that the new team would have to pick up. His agent is scott boras. He's talking about an extension but sir is making it clear that if he were to waive his no trade clause it would be to a west coast team bingo so I mean the dodgers really aren't the same without kershaw and that guy. Trevor bauer Who might never never pitch again in this league Or the other league for that matter and you know beyond walker bueller there. They might be a little thin and the padres have yu darvish but some other guys who've scuffled the so it seems like all three teams especially the dodgers and padres Maybe those certain extent the giants are in on starting pitchers so sherzer by just Change the balance of that division by showing up to one of these three cities but Susan do do you. I mean we talked about maybe not so much. I'm hitting side but the pitching side. How realistic is somebody like that. And their futures still the focus right with all these prospects coming up next year the the year after that would they give it a top dog away for two months of exercer- well i mean that you've kind of hit on one of the other reasons to do that. If nothing else it keeps them away from the other teams in the division. He is a difference maker. Yeah okay as the starter. He's going one out of every five games but his presence alone is going to give a big boost to a team. And i i mean he's he is absolutely the creamier clearer available regardless of position this trade deadline if he is indeed available or they're not just You know the nationals were like are we sellers buyers for a long time until they had the bad weekend so a little bit remains to be seen but If i'm the giants i am all in..

"In san francisco and belt but those guys are all shelled. Did you know one day. They're all going to be back then. That's going to be sooner rather than later. And i'm wondering how that factors into the mindset of our hans eighty and and company and and on the on the flip side in in. Oakland i mean betty is is ma- maybe just getting chapman right is is a great acquisition at the deadline. But susan. how about that. yeah. I mean you're talking about four big bats in the lineup. I mean you know. Crawford has been the mvp. He could be back as soon as thursday so By the time you're listening to this could be close to or even maybe even back in the lineup Longoria was one of their biggest bats. The first six seven weeks to the season he will be back august fifth Analysts still on a rehab assignment and honestly he could be back sometime this week. You start looking at things like that. You know belt. Maybe the next week week after that you're going to have to make a lot of roster moves just to get these guys back onto the roster in no List fellas on the sixty day. I l you're gonna have to make a move there longoria on the sixty day i'll so bringing in another bat that starts to get your starting to talk about a lot of roster spots on the forty man and back gets a little complicated plus your riffing floor buried. Good bats in so. I don't necessarily go with the idea that they need to to add that. Of course if there's a deal that works for them you know something they absolutely love. They jump on it. Sure why. not but That's a little bit like the relief situation very well. You're kind of talk. Me around on. Kimbrel john i got to say but You know they are willing to take on payroll. I think more so than giving up top prospect in the obvious main target for anybody if if if he's available is max scherzer hundred percent like who wouldn't especially team with playoff aspirations. The guy has experienced snails But he's going to cost a lot in terms of prospects. Maybe you get another you know. Kind of mid line starter. I mentioned danny duffy. In whose price tag has gone down. Because he's on the i l. You know somebody like that or somebody where you're mostly picking up payroll and not giving up prospects Like kimbrel so Yeah they have a number of different ways to go. But i just don't see a bat for for exactly the reasons you mentioned. They've got all these guys coming back with the as makeup And the fact that maybe the third basement isn't having a career year. Could there be things done in house. That would kinda elevate them beyond the trade deadline for instance chapman hitting like he normally hits and A lot of people not elvis andrus. But i think he's been playing offensive than defensive sides of the ball. Much better lately right. Yeah i mean a lot of the what. Susan just described about the giants. It's complete opposite as his right now as they stand. They're pretty healthy. They only have three guys on the aisle and one of strategy rosenbaum. Who's out for the rest of the year. That was. I think that was one thing that they were holding out. Hope that they might be able to get him back. Is like a second half boost in the In the bullpen. And obviously the hip surgery. So he's not gonna piss this year But other than that it's Mike myers on the injured list..

"Yeah missing the other day story craig. Kimbrel would be like my guy for perfect fit on that team because really only jake mckee has postseason experience. I mean yeah. There are a lot of great moving parts here But a lot of young and maybe inexperienced down the stretch on. And that's where kimberly who has You know contract through next season at money the giant certainly can afford would like solidify that bullpen but matty how about the as their needs already turned to the cubs bullpen to adjust one of them. i think you know if you had looked at it about a month ago and we did Ask david forced two weeks ago. Just kind of to allow what they were looking at before. The deadline and relief felt was a big one And the last night they weren't trade for andrew shaking left-hander from the coutts Who i would guess is gonna come in as sort of a setup guy Another left-hander they've gone through most of the season with jake diekmann is the primary left-hander And just another guy who can he. He's been together. Good season for the cubs can pitch some of those late inning high leverage situations. They have done all right in for the most part of the season but used a lot of the same guys and and those guys have been well used between the deepened trevino and he's married petite trio So i think they could definitely probably use another another bullpen arm. But now you're looking at the last month and the their offense has been quiet for For some time now. So i think if you're looking at this specific i mean if they could get potentially another bat in the outfield. Some that one of those corner outfield spots Would help a lot They haven't gotten a whole lot of production from the h. Spot throughout the season. So i mean if they were to bring in somebody who was corner outfielder could also take some h. Bats potentially left handed hitter through going down the list That would probably be a really really good fit for them but obviously the financial considerations are always a big thing. They do seem pretty for route throughout the Hundred games or so. They've been pretty stable in the rotation so it's always risky. Maybe too Too soon that's gonna to happen. But in terms of position groups it seems like rotations may be at the the lower end of the needs list. Right now yeah. I you know bob. Melvin is not going to be critical of the roster as is but i bet if you bought a a cocktail or two and sat him down he would say yeah the give me more relievers and and safin is absolutely as a lefty really nice fit and fits financially into what they do in oakland. But how 'bout and susan you reference this You know you might be getting some guys back here. How how would that factor into the trade deadline because the giants entire infield the projected infield is on the injured list of crawford short and longoria in on the right side Estella who really has done much yet..

"The astros in our the astros gonna come back down to earth lot of question. Probably i mean they. They i think they already did a little bit in this last series. Where were they detroit. Detroit yeah i think they split a doubleheader something then that being lost the finale anyway. They're i mean they're lost. They weren't like eleven games in a row. So they'll probably cool off a little bit though orange wagon But they still have to show that they can quite the lineup. That offense is incredible right now and they've played a couple of few series against the as and the pitching is just not been able to hold them down even oakland Which is strange. Because last year they are was lights out against them in oakland So it's i think they go there go to houston for a series before the all star break. So that'll be a chance to maybe even things out A little bit before they get to the break but In terms of what they need to do both of the bullpen. For sure. that's number one because yeah right. Now they have lou trevino at the back end and a lot of question marks. And how you it's to you know if your starter gets like five or six i mean because you saw you saw that on saturday like Montefusco five four to you in the seventh inning and became even get through the eighth without losing the lead And jake diekman was so good last year. He's given up a lot of home runs right now which is strange so he went. I think i forget what the exact number but it was something one hundred fifty games he'd given up giving up sixteen seventeen something like that petite Shaky and other than that. Those guys you know romo has been okay but the other options are just like not as reliable as you would hope so. I think they could definitely add arm or two or more back there. i mean hastings. Lozada's still kind of a wild card As to even as to what they're going to do with him because they're using it as a starter in the minors. And i think the long term goal is for him to start still. But is that this year. I don't know so yeah Pity staff definitely ask some questions And you know the offense. Their offense kind of comes and goes sometimes but they haven't gotten a lot of production out of the eight spot They signed mitch moreland. Who was going to be there left handed guy. That's really mostly what he's done. He's back to madison senate first base couple of times but he hasn't produced a whole lot And they've been using jed lowrie as they were kind of right handed Da's guy and his numbers against left handers are markedly better than his numbers. Right handers so So that's not as much of an issue but yeah maybe some. Maybe another left handed bat interesting. That's that's not quite as easy to acquire at the deadline You and i are both addressing the trade deadline in this weeks paper And the giants Far on this podcast. A couple of weekends ago for said The giants have The ability of the financial ability to take on extra payroll which is in. This price is one of the main differences. I think matt. I'm learning about covering the giants as opposed to the as they say dick and and i think they would prefer to take on salary rather than part with like a bigger prospect in if if deal but they would really like i think to get another starter who doesn't start up But particularly the way injuries are going they would love to get another starter and particularly one that maybe has some club control beyond this year Which might cost them. A you know a decent prospector to but certainly if there's a lot of salary involved the giants can handle that The question is going to be. I think belt. And if they learned something here in the next week or two about belts availability the rest of the way do they need to go out and get another bat they might have to. They have enough flexibility Among their their players their roster's constructed with so many utility guys. That doesn't necessarily have to be a first baseman. They could get a second baseman. And you save. Thomas i weighed. I got a lot of different options at first but you know without F- longoria for the short term and potentially built for much longer. I you know. I wouldn't have said about a couple of weeks ago but now i'm saying that and like everybody they'll probably be looking for a little relief help if they added one reliever. I wouldn't be shocked for on tends to do a lot of things similar to what the as front office does. And we have the front office pretty much every trade deadline. When they're in it will pick up at least one reliever so And they'll probably be fighting over some of the same guys there because those guys come a little cheaper in terms of prospects. So i think it'll be fascinating but i think the one thing i think is pretty clear is this is the first time that Citing will be running the giants when they're in a position to make a major move at the trade deadline and he's gonna do something and i think he's going to do something know i who knows yet. What big names might be out there. But i would not speed surprised to see him right in the middle of it so that should be fun. Yeah so you had something fun ish with a guy who's well known to both giants fans and and as fans and sergio romo was one of the few guys who did not particularly enjoy the first go round of spot checks more than everybody else. Maybe he did enjoy more seriously or not as serious. Did take it to the next level. what was what was that like. And what did he say. After dropping trowel on the first day was much. It was weird it was like after the first few. What's the first few like really intently. And you've i mean you've been. Have you been a globally field the globe global so you know how high up the press box boxes. It's like you're at the top of airplane. Hangar and all the players look like ants. Yes so like we watched the first few checks pretty intently just to see what was going right and no big deal so you kind of looking at a corner of your eye. So he finishes the sending. It's a it's a real lopsided game too so you know you're kinda turn right at the same time so i'm just kinda having to look up and just seem like drop the pants and like i think surgery And i don't think there was the tv like had cut away. I think at that point. So i wasn't like seeing any immediate replays but it's like i think he's traffic and he did In he explained we didn't talk to the game but the next on the field and he explained like. I said like i didn't plan on doing that I was kind of pissed kind of angry. Because i gave up a home run and i like made a bad pitch. Give up a home run. And then i'm walking off the mountain and all of a sudden the part comes up and says let me see your gloves. So he was like a glove. Here's my hat. Here's bill and let me just go ahead and open up the rest so i think it's been an isolated incident so far. Yeah i have. No i have not seen any other actual pants dropping. Um which is probably the best But yeah he.

jake diekman Thomas five six Detroit last year sergio romo two eighth eleven games Montefusco saturday Lozada earth one hundred fifty games next week houston this year seventh inning first time

"I'd say that committee takeaways or any next steps the action items that you want those listening today. What do you want people to do today. Based on this conversation. So i hope this conversation. It's helped merchants all levels potentially get a couple of snippets here and there through my my ranting about what they can do to improve what they're doing from a marketing perspective with the tools and resources that they take advantage of as well as the setup of their website. And you know the the resources that are there at at all different plan levels even if they're not on chopper five plus and really to just keep in mind the importance of all of these different resources and this is kind of a message almost to some of the bigger companies. That are out there that you know. They have that one or two person team. That's handling different things. That is maybe a bit just not ill-equipped but burnt out frankly with all the different areas of businesses that they have touched. So you're just to really understand the importance of what. They're doing digitally on their website through their marketing. I hope i've given a glimpse into what people can really prioritize. Definitely have some great recommendations for awesome tools and i just really some mindset around how you need to attack your website and really take a step back and talk about what the problem. You're trying to solve and understand the customer journey and building retention marketing into it and owned media. We talk a lot about that. So i think that's really. These are great. Great great topics. So how can people learn more about your agency and kind of the next steps. Yeah absolutely so. I try to keep it simple. Just go to ben's settlers dot com b. e. n. z. e. t. t. l. e. r. dot com. I'm super active on twitter. Lincoln instagram all. My hands are at ben settler. That we definitely are in alignment about. What can we do to help. Brands grow and scale. And i think we are both shop perspective but then from an agency perspective. It sounds like you're aligning yourself with the right partners and the right strategy and i really appreciate that one thing that i think you know already that. Want to make sure we're clear into the show. Is that shop. I really is on a mission to make commerce better for everyone obviously almost even democratize it and it seems very clear to me based on this recording today that you are also entitled entitlement really wanting to help a fight brands meeting coming on the show and forty five minutes later. We're getting into. There's a lot of great insights that you've shared today. I'm just want to thank you for that. I wanted to thank you for sharing your vision. And i guess most importantly just giving back the shop by ecosystem. Lots of in different maturity's and i think there's some great value in this recording today. Like i said before i started my sunglasses. Business sort of out of necessity kind of had this issue. Which i always wanted to maybe do something. Be fun to own my own business. My great grandfather owned his own business. You under five and ten. My grandfather under dry cleaners my father who is still going the party decorating events business. Entrepreneurship is very much in my blood but never really expected to be honest with you that it would turn into what it has turned into today and i really have shop to thank for that. I can remember a very specific conversation. That i had with a partner manager a few years ago i always give her a shoutout lauren health stab and she asked she was my partner at the time and very very forward with everything and ask. What would it take for you to take your consulting work. Full-time like what what would it take to get there. And she's for whatever reason she was very interested in the growth of my business and i really appreciated that and to be honest with you up until her asking. That question had never even thought about it. I had never thought that this was something that i could turn into a career and it very much has and with that anytime. I get opportunities to get on a podcast like this or do a webinar or give feedback on the the shop if fight partner portal or on different offerings within chapa fi or work with different app developers or whatever it might be i always take advantage of those opportunities a symbiotic relationship. Certainly the more. I do the more i can get out of it the more i could potentially help merchants the merchants helping me grow my business like it helps everybody but i very much have chiappa fight to thank for what my career is and even but what my non work life is and it's something that i'm i'm very grateful for for sure so the flywheel is going. "The ceo of a company called fast simon formerly known as instant search plus. You'll see why they've changed name and moment but they really are shopping optimization platform there for the small businesses but they also really help enterprise brands you all the way through onto shop a flight plus and other is cms and things like that and ecommerce you know. They're app provides a water features. We'll talk a lot about on the show for sure. Ai search visual search collection filters the problems a lot of shop. If i- brands are experiencing merchandising is key and not to mention other personalization features that are built into their platform. I believe it's going to be a conversation. I think it's timely was jumping and learn more about maybe how fast. Simon is assisting With growth and scale on chiappa fai so highs zohar. Welcome to e commerce. Battling as steve. Thanks for having me my pleasure. So i mentioned a bit at the top of choice. Wanna thank you number one for coming on the show for a second time. I think just it's really important to get founders on and talking about how they're making impact. I'm in the shop by ecosystem yet. A lot of very significant shop if five plus brands that are wildly successful because of your technology and so i wanna make sure that you have an opportunity to tell your story and so let's talk on a high level. I some people may not know instant search plus or the fast simon company. So let's talk about the problems that you're solving for shop. If by brands terrific thank it past. Simon provides a shopping position platform for merchants to improve shopper experience conversion rate than average order value and this includes as you said search visual discovery. Smart collections. filter marchandise crossover combination of personalization. We work with great brands including steve madden natural. Live bali motherhood feature targets scandinavian design mastermind and thousands of others now. We saw three big problems for merchants. The first is how to enable an inspired a shopper product discovery journey and this would include all the ways that shoppers interact with the shoppers that would include search collection filters product. Finders visual discovery or accommodation's the second problem is how to optimize shopper. Journey for the merchant. And that would include the merchandising personalization and even hyper tagging and the third which is really kind of for the scaling off. The fast growing brands is how to scale both online and with physical stores and hopefully will be ending the kobe teen nightmare and go back to physical stores. So this is where things like. How do you do multi store merchandising. Which is you know merchandising. On one store and push those campaigns do your other stores overseas or how do you deal with shop fi. Pos integration into your physical store. Or how'd you take into account multiple location inventory which is relative to shop. If i so not only would provide an automated solution to each individual use case but also because our engines are using multiple vectors. The end result is actually better than any single point solution so when brands are growing they need about dozens of point apps to run their business and this difficult so our platform that only solved a array of these use cases with better results. It also makes like manageable for fast growing brad because you have one class for so many different areas and member of ray back in the beginning you really like you know your core superpower really was in the search hence the name instant search plus And that was kind of the core. But i think i recall way back in the day you doing a quick demo for me saying hey steve. Here's what we're doing on magento. Or here's we're doing other platforms and we're thinking that there's an opportunity for the shop if i were to get involved in the merchandising site so it seems that there's been quite a bit of iteration over the last year and a half and now here we are with a lot of amazing features all bundled into one solution. Definitely there is a lot been going on. Deke is really to focus on the merchants. Our goal is really kind of the online ecommerce. Merchants and our mission is to provide them with anything. They need to optimize convert better and make use of all the traffic. There are getting so. Let's talk about your journey a bit. Because i think it's interesting. You know an. I understand your interview in the past but just for those that are new to you and new too fast simon. I just would love to understand the journey of what i guess positions you in the founding team on a couple of points number one to have the desire to want to build this platform and the number two to have the technical expertise and then the team together to build this all. I think what's what's really kind of is interesting for every founder founders. Just especially me with to build something out of nothing that's really gonna wear. The the motivation comes from. I personally started out as a software engineer. I wrote a lot of code in my days. image processing computer aided design and medical imaging after receiving my mba. I products marketing business management. The space i was in was enterprise software so i became an entrepreneur which means it's basically an entrepreneur working the same company so i was envisioning and bringing products and solution to markets and product. Lines business units. You know cross company initiative after twenty years in enterprise software. I switched ecommerce so My co-founder dark greenspun. I founded a fast simon and launched in search for e commerce and our initial edge. Back then was a patented lightning fast autocomplete for e-commerce now unlike typical startups that focus on technology platform. Api we focused on the ecommerce merchants and the mission was as i said earlier to provide them everything. They need to optimize shopping. So this is where we started with search. We added the merchandising personalization of visual search and grew into a full of dems asian platform. Now it's a combination of two things on one hand working closely with merchants and translating their needs into solution and on the other is leveraging deep cutting edge technology to create a new solution that was beyond most merchants reach just as an example. Our team developed our e commerce basically from scratch. As far as i know they are only a handful of games worldwide. That actually do that. And that speaks volume of our teams deep technology expertise.

simon Simon fast simon first magento Deke two things steve third madden last year and a half one class Api one store one solution second problem scandinavian second time both five plus brands
