"I don't work for her anymore. And can't imagine i ever will again. She's way into donald trump these days. So i suppose. I can say that now and quote so i think we've actually reached out to earth low before to see you. She wanted to talk on our show. And i'm really glad that we did not have honor show. Because i didn't know any of the stuff about her. So good for us for dodging that bullet. Yeah i have a number of her book sexually as as does my father and thank you for that info. I had no idea. Is it time for a good old book burning getting. Maybe just donate them spencer last proud but yeah but it makes you wonder like how much of her books are. Just completely made up interesting. Very interesting i mean. Honestly though if you're writing about ghost you're you're probably going to You know fictionalized some of what you're writing about just to make it more interesting so you kind of need to take everything with a grain of salt anyways when you're reading those types of books but yeah wow i would maybe get rid of those all right so after all my research the terrifying room on the twelfth floor that has been sealed off to keep people out or to keep something in just doesn't seem to exist but the floor itself is supposed to be the most haunted part of the hotel so obviously when we go there we need to bring a we debarred spend the night and see what we can conjure up no easy boards but spend the night yes all right. That's a lot coming from her. That's debate and now you know i'm going to sneak away to. I don't trust them but there are other methods. Do you have one of those travel. We boards and do have a travel devoid. Yes that's actually a really good idea. Something that you fold up and take with you. You could make one of your own. That is very true. But who's got time to make their own words. Usually when you're traveling you should make would burn ouija board. I don't have. That is kind of a cool idea..

"Let's talk about the sealed room on the twelfth floor. You know basically the impetus for this entire episode. The twelfth floor of the north wing is considered to be the most haunted floor of the hotel causing some employees to refuse to work on it. The entire floor itself is said to give off a very creepy and heavy vibe. So is definitely the floor. We are going to stay on if we stay at the congress hotel where i'll be sleeping probably in between you and spencer going with that always leaving. There is a little boy who supposedly haunts the twelfth floor in his presumed to be the ghost of carl linger a six year old who is thrown out a window by his mother. Only god during world war one and to the congress plaza hotel was used to house immigrants and refugees from war torn countries. That's very nice in nineteen thirty nine forty three year old czech. Jewish woman named adele longer was staying at the hotel with her. Two sons yawning michel who is four. And carl tommy. Six they were in the country on a six month visa which was about to expire. Her husband was supposed to join them but was delayed and unreachable. Adele was anxious for her husband to arrive and became increasingly nervous that they would all be deported soon so she fell into a deep depression and eventually suffered a nervous breakdown on august. Fourth nineteen thirty nine. She and her children spent the day at the zoo and when they returned to the room on the twelfth floor that night adult through her two sons out the window before jumping herself homing. She died completely unaware that on that very day they had received a letter informing the entire family that they had been offered permanent refuge in canada. Now when mr longer received the news that his family was dead. He reportedly threatened to commit suicide himself Several security guards say they've seen the little boy and several employees have felt as though they were being chased down the hall. Not not a very happy story. No no wonder they might be haunting the floor right but back to the sealed off room on the twelfth floor. A room is so terrifying that it just had to be sealed off. Research has not turned up the actual room number some point to a room. That's padlocked and say that's the one other say is the one that's been boarded up still others claim. You can't even place it anymore. That it's been papered over to remove any sign that it was ever there and gas report that they can find the sealed off area by knocking on a wall. That sounds hollow as if there's a room behind it. So which room is the most haunted room at the congress hotel..

"Rumor has it that capone and his cohorts ran their headquarters from the hotel and at one time owned the hotel for a while. Oh really well. Just wait okay. There have been whispers about capone's chicago outfit committing gruesome crimes at the hotel. His spirit is said to haunt the halls. But these claims have come under scrutiny. The truth capone never owned the hotel. So there's your answer mini-pig you. He never lived there stories. That he did are confusing. The congress with the metropoli and the lexington he probably was there a time or two and many members of his gang can be connected to the congress. Some of his gang even held a guy prisoner there for a while. Probably on capone's orders. And i don't know if you knew this but one of the best ways to connect capone to the saint valentine's day massacre. Was that someone called his place in florida from the lobby of the congress a bit before and also a bit after the shooting a number of gangsters from both his gangs and other local gangs did live there in the twenty s and there are occasional reports of people seeing a ghostly man dressed up like they're from the nineteen twenty s interesting. I told you we're going to separate fact from fiction. I love it. I like it and i get it would be weird of al capone. Ghost was there. Because it's not like i don't think he died in irs. He died in jail right. Yeah i don't know where he died honestly company but there's so many i mean that's also like people seeing teddy roosevelt goes there. I know fact. Teddy roosevelt did not die in the congress hotel. So why has ghost would be there when he didn't even he didn't even live in chicago right. He loved the congress so much. His soul traveled all across the country. This is why. I want to go have a drink at the bar. That must be one hell of a bar day. They'll all these ghosts. Wanna hang out the gungor since you go. If it's say. I wonder how old the bar is there. I wonder if it's just been remodeled. Or if it's like one of the original bars instigative work is in order. But we'll get there. We'll go have a drink and and talk with the bartender. and suet. they know another spirit said to haunt the hotel is named peg-leg johnny. It's thought that a hobo with a peg leg had been murdered in the hotel sometime in the early half of the nineteenth century. Not much else is known about the spirit but hotel staff and guests have reported sightings of a man with a peg leg lurking around the south tower in guest rooms on different floors the hotel lobby and also in dining areas. The mischievous spirit has been said to turn lights and electron on and off and he generally just scares and causes havoc for the guest. It is said that peg-leg johnny may have been a vagrant murdered at the hotel there are other speculations though that he was actually a murderer named. Are you ready for this up. Conway the one legged killer episode idea and great band name. I know right. We'll say that again. Since i was larry i think much to everyone's clear so everyone's clearer. This murder name is was conway..

"Yes. I'm very good possibility. Right away i go for the lowest common ones again. Spencer's the brains. Behind this whole kat we can make that arrangement pull out. Bad has three beds but they wanted to come. I ain't sleeping myself. It's obscene sleeping bag on the floor. All right and it's not just the guest who've been terrified by the things they've seen at the hotel hotel staff have encountered plenty of frightening occurrences that have ranged from shadow people to hands reaching out of walls dead bodies in bathtub screaming gunshots appliances being turned on and off carpet being ripped up furniture moving around the room pictures spinning on the walls and full-bodied apparitions including those of al capone and teddy roosevelt. Let's start with some of the most popular ghost stories surrounding the congress hotel. Most of this information comes from mysterious chicago. Dot com written by adam seltzer. Who is a tour guide and also a historian in chicago new york along with many other sources as always we include all the links to our research in the show notes. it seems like there are endless. Stories of tragedies that have taken place at the congress over the years for starters there is a story of james kennedy a. New york man who checked in alone in may of nineteen ten. He went to his room. Cut the dry cleaners identification tags out of his clothes burned. His papers walked to the lake and shot himself later that same year. An insurance salesman named andrew mack called on a friend at his congress plaza hotel room before also walking to the lake and drowning himself. At the foot of van buren street. There is also the salesman who threw himself down an elevator shaft. A drifter who jumped off the roof of the north tower and that the troubled family man who hung himself from a cupboard. Hook a cupboard. Hook a cupboard hook. How did that hold his weight. Well not well probably but it didn't really matter for that long. They built cupboard hooks a lot stronger back in the day. Now now it's all cheap at kia covered. Here's a story that surrounds one of chicago's most famous gangster. Al capone bring it. It said that al capone was one of the most notable and notorious residents of the congress hotel who supposedly resided in a suite on the eighth floor of the north tower..

"And today at the congress collazo hotel has retained its unique character by blending the old with the new. And we're going to have to take a field trip to the hotel. Maybe you know this month. What a better time to go. I would love to. I've actually never been inside of it. And i didn't know it had this whole history. This is really fascinating. I'm sure i've been inside to use the bathroom at some point in my life but yeah that's probably that's probably it all right. So let's move on to y. This hotel is considered to be the most haunted hotel in chicago. Yes please let's start with a more recent story. In two thousand fourteen celebrity chef pete evans posted a spooky encounter. He had at the congress hotel he wrote about his trip to chicago on social media and said quote. This has to be the strangest post. I've ever written after arriving in chicago. Tonight i had a quick bite at the girl nego- and checked into my hotel quite late. The walk from the elevator to room. Four four seven was one of the weirdest experiences it suddenly felt early cold. And i sense that something just wasn't quite right with the energy not only in the hallway but even more so once i was inside my room. I've always been super skeptical about the paranormal. Or at least i was. I tried to shake it off and tell myself it was all in my head but the extremely uneasy feeling didn't go away if anything became more intense so i grabbed my bags in pretty much ran out. I bypass checkout. Jump straight in a cab and got the fuck out of there while on the way to a new hotel. I asked the cabdriver if he knew anything about that particular hotel being hunted and he said he hadn't heard anything. So i googled. congress plaza. hotel chicago haunted. Numerous stories came up about other people's gravely bizarre experiences in the hotel. And i got some serious goosebumps. Wow i know it was what she does for. Two thousand fourteen and supposedly. There's a story about two marines who wants flood the hotel in their underwear at three. Am hello claiming that a powering. Black figure came out of the closet and headed straight for their beds. Although when i tried to google to marines in their underwear to find the story i got a lot of weird hits for that search but was not able to find the original story so that story is unconfirmed. Although i'd be interested to see if we could post some of the hits that you did good. I'm sure they were very interesting. But the pizza ovens uri. I did google that. And that i did find a lot of Information corroborating that so that that one. I believe okay. There is also one reviewer untrimmed adviser who stayed at the hotel in two thousand nine in wrote of lying in their bed and seeing the curtains. Move as someone who's peaking at them from behind the curtains and the reviewers friend hurt someone whistling in the room. While she was in the bathroom on three separate occasions they also complain of the room being extremely cold even though it was really really hot when they were saying they're outside it was very very hot and they even had servicemen. Come up to see if there is a problem with the air conditioning or something. Nothing they do could make it warmer in there. So i'm going to say as if we decide to stay. There are not to be weird but we're all three of assurance room like we're gonna do the old like get caught for the kid thing. But i ain't sleeping by myself. You're the kid as you're the kid mini. Yeah it is something scary happen. They'll probably like move over. Both of you might have rooms with two beds..

"It was an underground marble passageway. That connected the new annex with sullivan's building cool. that sounds. Yeah that sounds really interesting. And i unfortunately do not think it exists anymore. I was picturing something unlike marble underground when you said peacock kelly will. There is a mall on the south side of chicago ford city mall member. They had an underground alley. Which i also believe was called peacock alley. I don't remember that it was like a strip of stores that was under the parking lot and it was very spooky which yeah no comment. I mean that malls spooky for other reasons. That underground shopping area was spooky. Spooky reasons and kinda creepy. I remember you. And i got in trouble for going to that mall by ourselves when we were little to go see a movie. My mom's still talks about that and claims we lied to her which we did not oops. I want to know what movie you saw. It wasn't about the movie it was no but can you remember what movie. Yeah i think it was oscar. The movie with successor delone and mercer till may. I'm pretty sure we went to go. See oscar forgot that movie existed. It's a good movie. i really liked it anyway. Back to the history of the congress hotel so the south tower was constructed later between nineteen o to nineteen ninety seven in was designed by renowned architectural firm halberd and roach the cell tower house a magnificent banquet hall known now as the gold room. Another ballroom called. The florentine room was added to the north tower in nineteen o nine. These two famous public rooms combined with the elizabethan room and the pump pain room were used to host many of the chicago's elite social events of the day. Many famous people have stayed at the hotel including many us presidents. gerber cleveland william mckinley teddy roosevelt william. Howard taft woodrow wilson. Warren harding calvin coolidge and franklin roosevelt. All made the congress their base of operations while in chicago. Leading to the hotel's longtime moniker the home of presidents and then it ended with franklin roosevelt. I had no. This is so educational share. And then i know. I'm trying not be super educational. But we gotta go through this to get the spooky over the years. Various owners have updated. The hotel in continuous efforts to keep up with the modern conveniences offered by other hotels and accommodation properties of the times by nineteen ninety. Eight the hotel had created and identity of its own as it housed more than one thousand guest rooms. That is a lot of people's energies. No wonder it's haunted as fuck in nineteen eleven in order to differentiate the now successful hotel from its original form. The owners renamed it the congress hotel derived from its location on congress street across from the celebrated congress plaza section of grant park during world war. Two the hotel was purchased by the government in use as a headquarters for us. Army officers in nineteen forty. Five group. Chicagoans banded together to purchase the hotel and reopened to the public throughout the last one hundred plus years. The hotel has made many updates.

Trump Ally Tom Barrack Charged With Acting as Foreign Agent

"One of former President Donald Trump's old friends, who also advised him has been charged with trying to steer American policy in favor of a foreign country. Federal prosecutors say Tom Barrack lobbied for the United Arab Emirates between 2000 and 16 and 2000 and 18. But he did not register as an agent of a foreign country with us now is NPR contributor Ilian Marital Alia. Good morning. You've been covering the relationship between barrack and Trump for a very long time. What is their deal? Tom Barrack is a 74 year old private equity investor based in California. He's very successful. He was on the cover of Forbes. Once in 2000 and five They called him the world's best real estate investor. And in his personal style. He is smooth and gracious and self facing. He connected with Donald Trump a long time ago, 1988 when Barrack was handling the sale of the Plaza Hotel, and Trump wanted it. Trump bought the hotel for $390 million but ended up selling it a few years later at a loss but listen to how Tom Barrack described that transaction at the Republican National Convention in 2016, he says it was Trump who got the better of the deal. Barrack said Trump told him You just tell me the things that I should know? And how to fix it, and I'll do this deal. He played me like a Steinway piano. Mm. So the two men became friends. Baruch became one of the few major business leaders to endorse Trump early in 2016, and that's the point in time where this indictment picks up, Okay. And so what do prosecutors say? Baruch did According to the indictment, right around the time that Tom Barrack started raising money for the Trump campaign and vouching for Trump with the business community, he also embarked on a conspiracy to influence the candidates take positions favorable to the United Arab Emirates. "At the cousin pageants of Luck Sixteen. I think it's called the the the Mafia you the on call it a food court for me. You see the one down at a union central Los Angeles really popular Popula riot markets but. That's one idea that so many ideas bowling. It's a long narrow space. Bowling would fit that so that we're exploring a lot of ideas for that space and severely verily really compelling really interesting. Yeah all that now. My my wheels are going to look Could you gotta be come. It's and and when you think that the station will leave the golden gates remodeled itself recently on the other side clauses completely new redone this and then soccer over there. You basis the corner of Main Street downtown Las Vegas. The whole corner is going to be renovated. Epicenter of everything has that that would be twenty twenty one right. That would be the one when the lease actually I you know I. I don't know if I'm legally bound to not disclose the least I don't know when did open the open in July nineteen seventy-one Ninety okay interesting. It's a valid civic question believe. Let's let us talk about You've got that showroom downstairs. Yes it's classic classically appointed and what are your. What is your vision for that? You've got a comedy that goes was on and there the main thing right now incredibly. We're getting a lot of increase for movie shoots and music videos. Really of late but comedies the focus. Right now I think you are this probably come to more openings in that showroom only after me and I remember little whorehouse in Texas. You around yeah. I was half of that. Yeah that was me as I have. It's it's been nothing but a challenge and I think in you. You agree with me on this. That shows downtown just really out the way to go full production shows. They just don't like I mean mob story was incredible show. Yeah it were payment quality production value. The room was puffing up and it were work is an entertainment experience at work really well great dancers great story great set. It did a good job renovating route. And yet it didn't work out and We just saw that comedy eighty and we've had big bands in there as well. We've tried music in that Not Easy we had. MGM T performing. Their life is beautiful night. It's it's it's had too many steps dots. Comedy is something we can really get behind. We found a couple of COMEDIANS. That really work. Well Doug Santo Green or another Nick Dipaolo. Yeah funny Jamie Kennedy those guys have really done well in the room and now that was signed to identify which comedians walking down here. It's allowing us to say. Well let's do more of a residency style of comedy with those guys because we have different. Comedians it's been clubhouses. They hit and miss some walk somewhat better But comedy can work on a regular basis and there really isn't a great comedy programme club in the city. So you could you you could grow to. I mean those could be a rotating headliners conceivably that all those names you mentioned with Tom. Tom Has had a history in Las Vegas. He's a nationally. He was amazing here. He's funny I mean Thomas. He's smart funny. Yeah and and I know that stanhope wipes place out almost instantly guy like nobody else. He sells himself. He sells tickets. It gets himself more than anyone in more than any other comedian. We've had in this building. That guy has a loyal following uh-huh and he likes the room he likes the property. He stays here all of his or the COMEDIANS. It's funded enough stay here. They always hang out with try to make them feel like this is their home for comedy and this is where they can come and hang out a good time and we and we've been doing that and what I love love to see. Someone like Tom Green finishes his show comes outside. It's fifty sixty fans wave him and all they're doing is having a drink at the bar hanging out the girls flirting with him. It's a fun on-time and that's what you want. The comedians have a good time. And then they'll tell friends about it in downtown Vegas Oversea. Let's see lemon SEDONA ARIZON- it's smaller Bisbee Bisbee pops over in the denigrate job. That's old biggest. Also drive into your GIG and and hang out afterwards Hung uh-huh hang out with the people. Yeah comedy seems to be walking for us. It's a great room If comedy doesn't long-term who knows but for now I think comedy's ask sweet spot. It's it's working nicely there. Yeah there's a lot of comedies you know around Las Vegas Anyway. That's one of the things that we do. Have that works as a as clubs and the headliners of they have places like the Mirage or some the mother you know they've got the encore seater does a series listen pleadings. Yeah they have some big names. Yeah they have. I saw. This is probably controversial to say. Did you like Jim Ghanaian. I didn't find him funny. I didn't find it funny. I know it's funny able no. I have not seen his live back on the moment in his Netflix shows. Yeah that's yes shows as he's the famous for the Puckett hot pockets assisting that's his You might be a redneck routine gene. The hawks yeah exactly. Sometimes you know who else wasn't a great live comedian. Who have really liked otherwise Sarah Silverman all she did the the palm's the few years ago wasn't a good set? It was not good interesting. Yeah I don't know it's hit and miss just wise wreckage obeys. Come to Las Vegas. Somebody's question I remember sue small. He'd have to run the square garden. He's doing fifty two series of shows that have a good question Somebody should get him so. We're now Planning Fiftieth Anniversary celebration in a show. We'll a big part of that was good music well. The killers did their video here. Did they did the man cameo and yeah that's right. They did the man in the showroom and in the casino and the Dome We've had a lot of music videos so show everything's going to be lit up for that EXPECTA- to at its in July right around July fourth fireworks may be when I was I love fireworks. Yeah Yeah we'll have did lineup for that. Already talk about it yet but when we are are are you looking for Headliners just an overall. Yeah I think so. Yep something that has a tie into the plaza and the history of on on the corner of Main Street. I guess the Fabulous Union Plaza. I I was introduced the Union the Union Plaza in the old days when I used to listen to Los Angeles dodgers the Baseball Games in Idaho and the signal. "And you're gonna get it. But before I start he is a California businessman. He and Donald Trump have known each other since the late eighties. When barrack was involved in selling the plaza hotel to Donald Trump in addition Barrick is interesting because of his business empire. So he founded a company called colony capital two private equity group, but Tom barrack is particularly involved in the Middle East. He's of Lebanese descent. He speaks Arabic. He knows all of the key people in the Persian Gulf. So when you add that all up, you see this really interesting figure being chosen to plan Donald Trump's party, and in many ways, he's an unusual choice. Previous inaugural leaders. Have been kind of Washington strivers types. And if they were going to benefit from the inauguration, you know, it was maybe because they could eventually get a job on K street and buy a bigger house in the DC suburbs. Or get a good job in the White House, and you know, enhance their prestige Tom barrack gets chosen and I asked the same question. What does he have to gain from this? He's helping his friend, and I'm sure that that gave him satisfaction. But this is a busy guy with like access to a private jet. He's taking three months out of his busy private equity business career managing tens of billions of dollars to plan this party. So what is he doing to make it worth his while? And the very first event the inauguration week was this global dinner, he hosted right? Yeah. It's an this is an event that has never happened before. But it really put Tom barrack front and center, it's called the chairman's global dinner. Tom barrack was the host the entire diplomatic corps. All the ambassadors were in. Invited. And we figured out WNYC and propublica we got access to a guest list there. And we saw that Tom barrack had over one hundred guests of his own on his list. Right. So people from the worlds of business international business. There's an Emirati property developer ambassadors from the Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. I see the event as a moment when the spotlight really shown on Tom barrack for a small group of people who make big investments people who make big decisions in their eyes were on Tom. And they were seeing how close Tom barrack is to Donald Trump in the incoming administration. So sounds like we still have a lot of questions. We don't know where this hundred seven million dollars really went. We don't know who was maybe lining their pockets with an occupation donations. We don't know if foreign interests were paying to sort of get policy favors, and it sounds like what you're saying. Is that the? Inauguration is a little bit of a microcosm of how the business of Trump and the politics of Trump intersect and what happens when they do. Yeah. It's a snapshot. Because remember Trump's win was unexpected. And so what we see when we look at this snapshot at this moment in time. We we see a key Trump ally, Tom barrack, we see key Trump donors who thought this is the moment for me to do this thing right now, I want to support this guy. Maybe I want to get his attention. Maybe I want to engender a feeling of gratitude, maybe I just want to celebrate the fact that he won, and I have the money to do it. It's a really interesting snapshot of a moment in time, but we're continuing to fill in a lot of information. Elliot. Thank you so much for telling me more about this. It was a real pleasure. "But later you look at things like when he bought part of Eastern Airlines and rebranded it as the Trump shuttle or the plaza hotel. He was terrible at making those deals and even worse at executing them. So over time, I think he came to regard his own abilities. As maybe something like what people read in the art of the deal. Now, most took what's in the art of the deal was not from the president. It was from Tony Schwartz even the title came from Tony. So we have to wonder at every step of the way. What is Donald Trump really responsible for and how much is just hype? That's the development of is reputation. And none of which would really matter if he wasn't present the United States and meeting one on one with Latimer Putin multiple times meeting one on one with Kim Jong UN with no one else present in the room, which is highly unusual. I mean, he for whatever reason he insists on meeting with these people alone. The the plight. Explanation is that he feels so confident in his deal making that the by force of personality. He can somehow make something happen. Yes. But that wouldn't explain the fact that he doesn't want you want to know, what was said. I'm very worried about that to be honest. Yes. But going back to what Michael said he he did have a lot of skills in the beginning. And one of the things that he doesn't boast about where we think this is greatest skill. This is salesmanship he could sell ice in the winter to us, and he he built his reputation on him selling himself. And this deal thing is part of that. And he has sold themselves to people in that looking back at it. And they said, well some deals will. But why launch most of them were not so good, especially the later ones that Michael mentioned like the plaza and the shadow I mean, he just paid Eskin price and he casino stuff that didn't end and well, right? No, no. It didn't especially the Taj Mahal which was probably his downfall. He had to have it. It was the biggest casino. In Atlantic City. And that's when I say is ego took over is that Michael part of the Rodney think his ego. Oh, it definitely is. I remember when I discussed with then businessman Trump the site of negotiating so that everyone wins and. Experts on negotiation will say that the key to it is having an empathy for the other party to understand where they're when is located and then get to a place where everybody wins. And so I said to him what do you think of this concept of win win? And he said I prefer the concept of I win. So that's really where he's at when it comes to negotiation. And it's I think why he has so much trouble on the world stage. There are so many moving parts so many bilateral relationships, and he can't keep track of on Michael dantonio Barbarez. Great davick. Thank you, the pleasure on this Martin Luther King day, some lawmakers or letting loose on President Trump during sharp contrast between the president and the lead civil rights icon. And Mary Louise Kelley President Trump's sit down with Vladimir Putin looked set to go ahead on the sidelines of the g twenty summit this week. Then Trump threatened to call it off yesterday. He said it was probably on. And then from Air Force One on route to Argentina Trump tweeted. He was pulling out the bottom line is they may have an impromptu chat in Buenos Aires who knows there's nothing on the formal schedule. What we do know is that hanging over any meeting between the leaders of the United States and Russia is Robert Mueller, the special counsel who has been investigating ties between Russia and Trump and who this week showed his hand in a number of interesting ways, prompting journalist Garrett Graff to ask is Robert Muller's in game. Incite graph explores that question in wired magazine this week, and he joins me now hither Garrett by now as is prone to happen in two thousand eighteen there have been twists and turns even since you file. This story, and we're gonna get to some of those but to travel far far back in time all the way to Monday this week forgotten the dark ages. This was the day that Muller's team alleged that Paul Manafort, former Trump campaign chair had lied to the FBI. And you argue in your piece in wired that this day Monday may end up breaking among the most consequential days yet of the Muller probe. Why it's an incredibly hard, obviously to read the tea leaves of this investigation surprised us at every turn and often surprises us multiple times within a single day. But it seemed like Monday was the beginning of the end that the decision to declare Paul Manafort as non-cooperative and move forward with his sentencing appears to be perhaps a way that Muller is trying to move forward with publishing something that could. Look like the Muller report that he plans to file sometime presumably next week. A document outlining with the court all of Paul manafort's lies in crimes. So if that is one way that Mueller may be showing his hand or about to show his hand. Let me fast forward you now to yesterday, which is when longtime Trump lawyer Michael Cohen pleads guilty again this time of lying to congress about a proposed Trump Tower in Moscow. How does it that shift the picture? It's one of the most significant moves that we've seen so far from Muller because what it does is connects Donald Trump and the Trump organization directly to Russia in directly to Russian President Vladimir Putin during the course of the two thousand sixteen campaign and how so how are they now coming together? We'll what you have is Michael Cohen trying to contact in game the assistance of Ladimir Putin himself. To secure the funding and the approval for Trump Tower Moscow as late as the spring of two thousand sixteen well into the period where Donald Trump has secured the GOP nomination for president of the United States. One of the aspects of Muller strategy appears to have been he's kind of rating, whatever final report he's going to produce at the end of this as he goes, I mean, he's been producing these very detailed court filings. Exactly. And people seem to be waiting for there to be some hard back book that gets published at the end of this. That is labeled the Muller report like nine eleven commission style. Exactly. And I think most people are missing that. He is writing a lot of that report in public with every court filing where the details that he puts into these are far more than is strictly necessary for the criminal prosecution that he's attempting to pursue. So when you look at the. Totality of what? Bob Muller has published in these indictments in these plea agreements, there's a lot there. Well, it's about three hundred pages of what a Bob Muller report would look like at the end. So to your key question is Bob Muller's in game. And I think it is it's incredibly hard as I said to understand where this investigation is going day to day. But Bob Muller has to know that his investigation was under threat, potentially after the election, and after attorney general Jeff Sessions being fired. Absolutely. And that he I think appears to be ready for some rapid movement in the weeks ahead now that doesn't necessarily mean this is going to come to a quick conclusion. The prosecution's for Watergate stretched out over the course of almost a decade. But this is I think a case where George popadopoulos went to prison for his. Fourteen days sentence last Monday, another former trumpet, we should mention. Yes. And that I think by the time George popadopoulos comes out of prison. We're gonna know a lot more about this case, journalist and Muller biographer Garrett Graff Garrett. Thank you. My pleasure. So as we just heard one of the most significant developments in the Muller probe this week was President Trump's former lawyer and fix Michael Cohen pleading guilty to lying to congress about efforts to build a Trump Tower in Russia during the two thousand sixteen campaign and that effort came after decades of President Trump trying to build in Russia to be NYC's. Ilya marritz, co host the Trump Inc podcast. He joins me now to give us a more of the long view. Welcome to the program. Thanks for having me. I should say Trump Inc. Right. I have to get to Trump Inc. So we know some about Michael Cohen's work during the presidential campaign. How does this week's news ads what we already knew about Trump's efforts to build in Russia? Well, we now know because Trump's former lawyer said it in court that Trump was actively pursuing a tower in Moscow while he was campaigning for the Republican nomination for president. This is something Donald Trump has long denied what history tells us is that Trump has long wanted to put his name on a building in Moscow. So in one thousand nine hundred seven he visits the US. Czar the Soviet Union, and he talks about how they need luxury hotels in Moscow and Leningrad. He makes another trip in one thousand nine hundred ninety s doesn't get anywhere. And then in the two thousand Trump's starts to lend his name to developers around the world. And there's a there deals around Russia. There's one in Azerbaijan there's one in the Republic of Georgia which Michael Cohen helps to arrange in twenty thirteen Trump's comes to Moscow again for the Miss Universe pageant. He owns the pageant, and he says again that he's in talks with developers. And then finally we see a renewed effort in two thousand fifteen and two thousand sixteen to build in Moscow.
