"Okay, three, two, one. Oh my goodness. Good morning, good afternoon. Whatever it is for you, I hope you're having a fantastic day. My name is Zach Schumer. This is strong opinion sports episode 400 and 94. We have to start with this today. This is, I can't record a podcast and not talk about this topic, so Cleveland brown's quarterback deshaun Watson has been suspended or it would appear he's been suspended for 6 games. Former federal judge Sue L Robinson reviewed everything and made that decision, she stated that he violated the NFL's personal conduct policy, she ruled that he deserved a 6 game suspension, but there wasn't enough evidence for an indefinite suspension. And so honestly, I'm still kind of just waiting to see what happens. There's like a three day period where the NFL can decide to go with the 6 game suspension or do something different, different from the recommendation they were given. So it's very early in this decision, but we're still kind of waiting to see what happens, but it looks like deshaun Watson has given a 6 game suspension. And I am surprised. It is fewer games than I expected. The NFLPA, Players Association, made an announcement yesterday, Sunday. Saying that whatever the federal judge will decide, they will support. Which, to me, it was like, oh man, it must be really bad. They must be getting out in front of it. It must be like a two year suspension or something crazy. I think actually they knew it was going to be kind of a slap on the wrist. And we're afraid of getting backlash. And so they're getting out in front saying we support it, whatever it is. Which, hey, their job is to their job is to support the players. I guess I don't know. What do you say about this one, right? Deshaun Watson getting a 6 game suspension. Feels like too little. I'm also not a lawyer.

"Of sports I'm Michael darn I'm scarlet fu And I'm Mike lynch The lockout is over Major League Baseball and the Players Association reached a new collective bargaining agreement this past week ending the league's 99 day lockout MLB commissioner rob Manfred addressed the media after the deal was made I know that the last few months have been difficult There was a lot of uncertainty I am genuinely thrilled to be able to say that Major League Baseball's back and we're going to play a 162 games Let's get into the details now with Pedro Mora he is Fox Sports national baseball writer and author of how to beat a broken game the rise of the Dodgers and the league on the brink Pedro welcome to the show sir Thank you Appreciate that So what happened We went from I don't know They might not this might hold for months then all of a sudden bam okay we're in Let's go see ya April 7th opening day What happened Yeah yeah it's a great question I think what happened is the product of two things I think for one the two sides were inching closer as this week neared Slowly but surely over the last two to three weeks they progress toward a middle ground on several of the key issues that the player set out to negotiate in this agreement And so it was natural to some extent that they were getting closer and if they could reach this deal The other thing that happened is that there are Thursday represented a real deadline in a way that none of baseball's self imposed deadlines really really could The reason the reason that was the case is because if the players did not and the owners did not come to an agreement for a season it was going to get exponentially more complicated because they would run out of days to stage a full season And when there was no full season players would not get paid fully and that would create a whole separate huge discussion within the negotiations that was going to get much more complicated would have gotten more acrimonious as we saw during the 2020 pandemic shortened season They were going to argue about prorated pay for weeks to come And so I think everyone ultimately opted update against that and decided to stage a full seasons of benefit of both parties It will be a little rush to be a little condensed because the season was supposed to start March 31st But ultimately no one's going to be too upset about the season being delayed by one week So they salvage really a pretty good situation out of what looked like a pretty bad one But days weeks months ago And that's surprising in some ways but it also it also makes sense There's a lot of money on wine Yeah would have triggered a whole new round of negotiations about something that they wouldn't have to deal with if they just got something done What I'm curious about is the fact that the Players Association approved this deal by vote of 26 to 12 But all 8 members of the executive subcommittee voted to reject it What does that say to you that there's some level of ambivalence Quite a lot of ambivalence within the player's camp at a level of the players who are more highly compensated than the average player Yeah exactly I think that's also what I'm most curious about As you said those executive subcommittee players three of them have signed 9 figure contracts all of them are generally wealthy with $37 million plus in their bank accounts and their baseball careers And it's interesting that all 8 of them voted against it One thing worth noting is that Garrett Cole one of the members of the community told the athletic that the executive subcommittee decided to stay together on that vote So it may not be that all 8 of them actually felt that way but then it was a show of strength of the committee who had done the majority of the negotiation against the against the owners And so that might be what we're seeing there I've also curious about it I think maybe the facts will emerge in time but it seems like a couple of really prominent players thinking of Max Scherzer and Francisco Lindor on the match We're pretty against it in both of those players on that executive subcommittee both of them have signed massive contracts both are going to be on the New York mets who are going to probably be the team that is hurt most by one new provision in the agreement which is a massive tax on TMC spend really well past the norm And that's really might only apply to the New York mets So that might be which is owned by Steve Cohen of course Yeah exactly And so and those players might be seeing that it might be worth it to them to wait three more weeks to get a 5% better deal But if you're a major league player who has a three or four year career making a couple $1 million over that career that you've let that you've worked for for years is it worth a month Is it worth a month to get a little bit more money or would you rather just play right now And as you said there's a disconnect in some ways between the finances of those guys on the committee The record file Can you declare a winner in the settlement Well I think the players did better than they have in a long time And so I guess you could say that's a win right If you're facing if you're facing the constant paying of defeat and you turn around and don't get totally obliterated and negotiations I suppose that's a win But ultimately I would have to say that the owners went because these are people that are in charge of profit machines and they did nothing They lost nothing that will take away from that profit machine What the players achieved in getting like arbitration pre arbitration pools $50 million for players who have accepted sales and aren't yet in the money making phase of their career That's $50 million That's less than 2 million bucks per owner And that's just not when you're talking about how much these teams get from their television deals and revenue sharing or teams that don't have significant television deals The stakes have just lowered that Yes the owners are going to keep profiting baseball is going to happen fully They're going to get all their money from television I think the owners win One thing too is that the minimum salary will increase from just over $570,000 to about $700,000 this year And there will be $20,000 annual increases Now I know that sounds like a lot of money Boy I wish I made 700,000 Oh I do wish I made $700,000 But when you are a baseball player you have to remember some of that money is going to your agent Obviously taxes and so on Yeah yeah and really minimum salary the way that MLB teams treat those sorts of players The minimum salary is more of a daily rate than it is in annual rate You could think of You could almost think of it like a studio paying paying their crew members to certain amount per day right Because these players a lot of them and one of the biggest wins for the players I would say is a new provision that limits the amount of time players can be optioned from the major lease to the minor league of 5 times in a given year When we've seen players have that happen to them 20 30 times in recent seasons And so what it means is when you say yeah the minimum value is going to be $710,000 but really that's about 4000 a day And so it's historically been used as like a daily rate And then the guide you get called up for two days and then you sent back down to the minor leagues where you made a one in 100th amount of that It's 2000 a month So it's really if you can spend a month in the bank that you can make a nicely livable wage Up next on the show stay tuned for more of our.

Riley financial on the line from Fort Lauderdale from us for us excuse me You're saying we're presently caught in a bear trap we did see the S&P 500 into correction territory Does it enter a bear market and if so how long until we see that I think we are in a correction I think it depends very much on what's going to take place in Ukraine and how far mister Putin is going to push into the Ukraine I also think that's going to affect what the fed is going to do in terms of interest rates and that's going to have an effect on the economy and the markets and it's clear to me that a lot of the appreciation type stocks that don't have dividends or have little dividends or under some severe pressure with many of my clients I use a strategy using funds closed in funds and exchange traded funds I follow about 70 and they all beat the American inflation rate the way I calculate that is I take the CPI index and the PPI index and average them It's about 8.7% currently So if you're making either through appreciation or through income more than that you're ahead of the game and if you're making less than that you're behind the game and getting affected by the inflation rates Mark one of the things I'm curious about is a point raised by Esther George before that perhaps the fed could be a little more aggressive on reducing the balance sheet and a little less aggressive on raising rates I'm not sure exactly whether that would lessen the flattening of the yield curve But that's the idea Do you like that idea It's an interesting idea that the questions there are where on the yield curve would they sell bonds and what that would do to the entire yield curve as you pointed out the yield curve today flattened to some extent with short rates rising and the ten year and the longer bonds remaining about flat but it would be a guess on the part of the fed and how that would affect the market now that would affect borrowing costs for both the United States government and for corporations in America All of this weighing into what we're seeing with regards to inflationary pressures to a new rightly pointing out the energy picture pointing into this We've got Brent crude options set up for a post $100 surge How much further room do you see in these markets and I guess what is the negative impact on the U.S. economy here if we continue to see these inflationary pressures The inflationary pressures are especially in fuel oil electricity and gasoline are quite severe they're up over 40% I think President Biden has made it giant mistake and restricting our own internal United States oil and gas production and I think it's put us in a position from being energy independent a few.

"As of December 26th, because they're anticipating more people spending time with family and stuff over Christmas. They are going to go to daily testing this in agreement between the NBA and the NBA Players Association, which they have to. The two sides have to agree if you're going to make any changes at this point. So daily testing between January or December 26th and January 8th, so the NBA is changing their rules, so to speak, they're not the only league that's doing that. The NFL is doing the same thing. By the way, Taylor heineke for the Washington football team just tested positive as well. He entered their protocols. So it's not just an NBA thing. This is hitting this is hitting everywhere, but college basketball has had multiple games canceled. As teams have had to kind of shut down briefly. But yeah, it's everywhere. So yeah, so kind of what Trevor was saying is the MBA has agreed to daily testing. They're going to, hey, I think you said it, but if you didn't masks are going to be required again for everybody. All the tier one people, which that's essentially anybody who's on the floor and interacting, what's curious is it's not like it was a year ago where in the open buildings of fans were pushed back. They weren't near the benches at all. That's can't imagine you can change that at this point. We'll see. The question that, I know, you've gotten I've gotten, I think everybody who covers the league has gotten is. Are they going to shut down? We don't know the answer for sure, right? So we can't say with certainty. But the belief from folks I've talked to within the league is no. A big chunk of it is last season. I think it's been kind of forgotten maybe some that they did the schedule in half. They did the first half schedule. And then we get the second half schedule and a big chunk of that second half schedule was a push to do what games we need to make up, how do we move things? How do we do schedules? We remember the grizzlies and spurs, both played a ton of games in the second half, including each had a back to back to back stretch. Scheduled because they had been shot down at a point in the first half. So what we're seeing is right now we've seen the bulls have two games postpone those have been the only postponements to this point..

You have any information any scuttle butt on. Espn feels about this schefter story. Espn put out a statement. And this doesn't work journalistically. But they see him as somebody that was in this scenario that was trying to get something right and so he was sort of passing it to make sure the facts were checked in that he was trying to get something right. That's their spin I think that they view this. And i think schefter probably uses as a you know what i i don't know if they let me let me restate that jimmy. They hope that this is a one. Maybe two maybe three day story. that'd be blown up blown away and they you know It'll be forgotten about into weeks. MLB To Try Experimental Rules This Year
"So here are some of the experimental rules that Major League baseball's tinker with this year. The minor league level. I think I'm about to say, like experimental drugs to help you deal with this situation. With the bank. So Major league Baseball is going to try. 15 2nd pitch clock. Let's start here. I mean, they've already been trying to tinker with this for a while. Pitch clock in the minors and trying to get this into the major leagues and the major League Players Association doesn't want it. But that's nothing new. I think it's a good idea. I don't see anything wrong with a pitch clock. Making sure pictures move quicker. Batters move quicker, and if you don't if you're not in the box or the pitches in off by 15 seconds, it's a ball or a strike, depending on the picture of the hitter. To me. I love the pitch clock. What do you think I do, too? It's just odd to me that here we are 2021. I feel like we've had the same pitch clock conversation for about five years. And I know the players association doesn't want it. But I don't even know why this is even being written about it. Still tinkering was they're changing the amount of seconds But we've been there. Done this with the pitch clock either. Make it happen, or don't Mortgage Ames govern to buying Elektronik Strike Zone So there was some light tinkering the last two seasons, I think, and now more expanded use of the Elektronik strikes only robot umpire now the way that this is Being implemented. It's not. There is a robot like Judy Jetson behind the plate or not. Judy Jetson, who's the robot from the Jetsons, the maid? Whatever the maid was. It's not like that's the robot behind the plate. It is an electronic strike zone and that a human empire behind the plate gets the read either Baller strike and calls it I guess they do have final say that the human Um, can override it but that he is getting fed the information from Elektronik Strike Zone again. I like this is well, considering how Much of a discrepancy There is with human Empire's I'm on board with this. What do you think? Well, two things number one. It's Rosie. The robot is bogus. Always out objections. I'd love the idea of robot umpires. My only question is when you start giving a guy like Angel Hernandez, let's say a chance to override Do empires. Egos get in the way, and they just don't care with robot is telling them And also is this going to be done quick enough where it's not going to slow down the game. All right away. You get something you're going strike Paul, and whatever Rosie the robot voice, and then they have to make that split decision whether to override it or not. I just I like the idea. But I think you're also giving umpires a chance to allow their egos to get in the way and make their own calls

Washington Capitals' Tom Wilson suspended seven games by NHL for hit on Boston Bruins' Brandon Carlo
"Elliot seven game suspension for tom wilson. I don't wanna go over. They can prejudice a jury here. I don't want to go over the usual arguments here about did he. Didn't he intention all that kind of stuff. That always gets itself played out hysterically on twitter and we saw that fire tonight and over the weekend and no these conversations going to happen. But what are some of the questions that you had going into the tom wilson hearing and are you surprised that he had one in the first place and does any part of a seven game suspension. Surprise you you know. I think the most interesting thing i've found is that you know there are a lot of people who believed that. He only got suspended. Because he's tom wilson And that if it was just about any other player in the nhl who delivered that hit. We wouldn't be talking about anything here. And i think the capitals believe that. I mean you heard peter laviolette save. I saw the the hit. I mean his feet round the ice. He stayed down with everything. Looks like a hard hit in the corner of not not exactly sure what happened but to me. It looked like just a hit. You heard ovechkin call it a joke And one of the things we talked about on. Fridays podcast was. How frederick drove the capitals crazy on the wednesday night game the night to game two nights earlier when he was all over ovechkin than ovechkin spirit him and you were the one who asked okay. How was he allowed to do this. And then two days later they play again and on the shift with carlo. Wilson tries to engage frederick a couple of times. And frederick's noah got a constant winning a game here and he runs over carlo you know. Maybe he was frustrated. I don't know i i. I don't know how wilson would explain it but you know. Saturday is a day. I make a of my phone calls and i asked around legalized and people are just generic conversation. It came up. What do you think about wilson how bad you think he's gonna get it and i did have a lot of people say to me if this was anyone other than number forty three on the capital's nobody would even be talking about this. Nobody would be if it was a hit that anyone else delivered. It wouldn't be a penalty or suspension. A lot of people felt them. But that's what happens when you have the history right. All of a sudden people look at you differently. You don't get the benefit of the doubt name Four hundred other players in the league if they throw that hit they get nothing but because of his history. That's what happened in this case. Like i really believe probably looked at elliot. Moore's while that was a tough hit with a bad outcome. But because his tom. But but i think generally predisposed to assume the worst when it comes to tom wilson but that's a reputation that earned so on friday night. He throws the hit because there was head contact. The first thing everybody looks at is rule forty eight yep illegal check to the head and is the head the main point of contact and the answer there is no this is my guess. My guess is that the people in the nhl department of players safety said this is not a rule forty eight and then when they started thinking about it they looked at it and they're like we don't like this. Is there anything else it is and if you read rule forty one which is boarding. You know it's there you can make that argument. And i think that's exactly what happened. Is they made that argument. And they said that's boarding. Now it's new president's you know that's not the way boarding tends to get called boarding tends to get called when a guy has hit from behind and carl wasn't hit from behind i think that's one of the things that the capitals and possibly the players association discussed wise. You guys don't call boarding like this and at the end of the day that's why it wasn't also like thirty or forty games because boarding doesn't carry those kinds of suspensions historically the highest boarding penalty i could find. I suspension was zac. Rinaldo in two thousand fifteen. It was eight games. Right and wilson gets seven. So i think that's why he got less. You know the other thing. Is you know the capitals argued. It was a clean hit like some other people had said to me and the league just felt the totality of it all was illegal.

NBA Players Won't Be Mandated to Get COVID Vaccine

"You know if we have to wear a mask and do all this For a regular game. Then what's the point of bringing all start getting back? But obviously, you know, money makes the world go around so It is what it is, but I'm not really worried about it. So earlier this week, it was reported that the MBA in the National Basketball Players Association, they were working toward an agreement for the All Star Game to be on March 7th that state for Marina in Atlanta. The bronze. Not happy about it Ya honest last night, said he doesn't care about the game. So, Robin, Is it stupid to hold the All Star game this season? Mm. No, I wouldn't go that far. Look Any time you're dealing with the current circumstances, I said before, there's no Perfect solution. If you wanted to avoid the All Star game out of caution, understood if you wanted to avoid the All Star game to give players of break more than understood, and I think In fact, the frustration you're hearing for most of the players I've heard it from is Maura about the break aspect in the pandemic. Fox just reference the pandemic specifically LeBron Talked about it when he made his comments, but it was sort of the secondary topic he had talked about, you know, expecting a break at that time. The quick turnaround on this season s O Yonas Discuss the breakup of Chris Paul is the president of the Players Association say It's a time where guys get to see their families when they don't a lot of the season, so I think Most of the frustration. To be honest with you is coming from star players who are you know, we're expecting that break. They were told there wasn't gonna be an all Star breaker. They assumed there was gonna be an All Star break. They're playing a condensed schedule, and particularly in like LeBron's case, there was such a quick turnaround that I get that frustration. Obviously. There, you know is the same safety risk that you have. For Every other game, and it's thrown into another level, perhaps with the number of players who would be there and in Atlanta in any gatherings and everything like that. What the MBA does have a set of protocols in place They are already conducting this season, and Chris Paul had said in the negotiation. Remember, the players agreed to this. If it gets done, it's not happening without the agreement, the players union Said. He has to look after the entire group of the league, and the league is not just made up of star players and whatever revenue that comes in from the All Star Game, whether that's from TV partners your sponsors or what have you That gets split with the players so there could be a big financial incentive for the quote unquote rank and file players in the MBA. Personally, I'm a fan of the All Star.

I think we can make a Cincinnati topic tonight in the eight o'clock hour is about Tom Brady being one of the most one of America's most polarizing athletes Today in You know me, I'm always looking to localize it tied in and I thought, well, then who would be the most polarizing Cincinnati sports figures through the years? Round here will do that and more. Let's get to it. We begin with the Reds. Couple of different things developing. We'll see what we make out of it. I was I was struck by a tweet I got last night after the show. I want to say it was who moves from a Rob Mueller. Who said the Reds have created absolutely zero Or even negative interest in their product since a team that's sorely underperformed most of last year. It was his tweet. The redhead created absolutely zero or even negative interest in the product since the team that sorely under performed most of last year, and my response to him was it's striking. That's one word. Another might be frustrating, but I'm going to go back to this well again because of where they were for six years of losing. What they did last offseason at this time. What? We were talking about it This time I go back and look, I keep the show sheets of every show. I do. I go back and look at what we were talking about it in like this week a year ago. And I looked at all the stuff we were talking about involving Mike Moose, Takis and show Go Akiyama and Nick Castano's and figuring out the batting order and figuring out how this team fit in comparison to the rest of the National League Central. We were talking about the starting rotation and how good it would be. And I think now of what I've spent time Topic wise on this offseason. And it hasn't added up. Much at all. There's been very little reaction to the whole shortstop conversation. I think, in some cases because either some don't even know who the names are or have reached the point of Disappointment. And I was talking about this lunch today. They ended last season closer to Winning the division being a winning team than being closer to a rebuilding team. Yet how have they approached this off season? The end of the year on the scale of Ready tow win versus rebuild it. They ended it closer to ready to win, but not good enough. They got in because of it expanded playoffs, and then they were quickly dismissed. And I think the frustrating thing is, I used the analogy over the weekend. It has been a fence straddle this offseason. Straddled the fence. They've really done nothing of significance. Either way in the in the last place you wanna be in sports is fence straddling. You're either going forward or you're rebuilding because staying in the middle, does you? No good. None whatsoever. And this team has tried to fence straddle and just kind of piecemeal it together and then cross their fingers and then hope things are okay. That's frustrating. And I would imagine that indecisiveness has frustrated Reds specifically Dick Williams in years past when he was the general manager of this team. What do you want? Which direction do you want to go? Pick one and go there. A year ago. At this time, they had picked one and they had gone there. Remember how we were feeling and what you were what we were thinking what we were discussing. And one year later. Consider where we are. Up next we'll get into Sean do little what it means for this team and what it means for their payroll. Your rookie year was against Dallas on a Hard is Iraq. I bet Astro Turf Stadium in ST Louis. And you went for 1 93 against Dallas went for over 1600 as a rookie. Do you remember that first game, though, against Dallas? Absolutely. It was above what Castille was my my head coach, which was the great coach, Oklahoma gym swimming with my, um with my position, coach and Remember, but what was coming into the office the meeting when I was a look it and said Anderson doesn't block he just run and check on. That's all I needed to hear. So that sound a lot like Moose statement. I wouldn't Held at the University of Miami. Hey, was my coach for two years, and that's kind of what he had me doing, but he may be blocked up. Yeah, and you could do it all that Obviously you went on to play for Coach Parcells and Bill Belichick was on that staff. And you know you're you're most known. I think for your great performance and Super Bowl 25 21 carries for one or two on the touchdown. But I want to go back because we are in the Bay Area, obviously, and we are the flagship of the 40 Niners to the game the week before and the NFC Championship game and the game plan that that Bella check had To stay in the nickel the whole game and that obviously which did the K gone and you're a big part of that. Just taking the air out of the ball and running it down their throats and playing keep away But just tell me about when you look at the game plans that you you're a big part of And the defense executed tiptoe win the championship game at Candlestick over the 40 Niners and then come back two weeks later and do what you did to Buffalo is, you know, two of the greatest offenses and you are a big part of that. So just tell me about those the championship Sunday Win and Super Sunday, Okay? Well, you know, way have played 40 minutes early that year, and we kind of had an idea who we're playing again, saying I'm not mistaken. I don't think there was any touchdown school in the game. At least I know we didn't have into three Monday night game 7 to 3. And then the second. I think we school field goals that whole game and you know, and I think the highlight of that game was when Gary Riesen did that fake punt. I think that changed the game and put us in a position to possibly win it. And then having Roger Craig, one of the finest running back you've got planned for you guys. You know how to hook up where Eric. I'll hit him in the ball came loose and large, was able to recover it and gave us a chance to keep the winning field goal. But it was a tough battle. Man. We had always played each other tough. We knew each other. That was a mutual respect between the two teams is Forrest Talent level. We always equal if you look at, uh every position had Individual that can make plays, even though you have more name players on your team, with better and bigger resume that our offensive players had, but But we just played in the team. And when we got lucky, you guys we're going for a three peat, which had never been done before, And it was. It was history to be great. Auggie Anderson is joining a Super Bowl week continues here on the sports leader. So you're trading for the ST Louis Cardinals middle of the 86 season in the state with the Giants through 92. So it was obviously, as you talked about those battles with the 40 Niners or some great NFC teams. The Chicago Bears. What was it like just battling with all those the Redskins those historic teams? In the regular season in the playoffs. Yeah, well, you know, the regular season is one type of intensity. And as you get into the playoff it changes in each game of the playoffs brings a different type of intensity level. That concentration has to be second in on because you want to go home, so you have to really concentrate and focus and after We'll decide that that night life are that extra curricular activity that would normally go on during the regular season, and it was his business a zone Lee where you had to just concentrate and focus on your job, and And we're about part and everything else after everything's said and done. Yeah, We don't have to worry about that this year. That usually is a concern, but we're in the middle of a pandemic, so I don't think the guys he's Kansas City's flight in the night before the game. J. But s so go ahead and tell me about Super Bowl 25. That was right after The first Iraq war. Whitney Houston had a thrilling national anthem and that's one of the greatest Super Bowls in history came down to a field goal. But again, your your game plan was so well executed. Coach Bela check and silencing the K gun and you running the ball. So what do you remember about that First Super Bowl champion when it was Bill's and Giants back and Super Bowl 25, Where do you have that Super Bowl M v P trophy? Down in my man cave for sure. But what was unique about the two game plans. I'm gonna give you the defensive game plan, and then I'm taking off. There's a game playing different game plan was that a gun was by far the highest Most opponents office you can face so I was like that miles back in the day running Shoot, man. I'll say this. Miles Davis Shelby, you gambit back then with Kelly. Yeah, the USFL. Yeah. Even make that same type of setup and you notice under that system, they don't run the ball, the floating ball. So Della Chick The last we were blessed. We're gonna rush. We're gonna pair rushed three. We're gonna drop nine. Wow. So that, um Protect against the past and make every throw. He makes. Make it underneath. And then we just go knock the heck out of receivers that we first implemented that philosophy Banks and T and little martial air. Kyle would pepper There was not feeling that because you're saying let them run and thermostat rough over 200 yards, but You can't beat us by running killer can't be this with his arm. So they had to buy into that philosophy. I did. Then you take the slip of that, then, uh, there for ourselves and my position. Coach Ray Handley and an office coordinator. Um Run Erhard to listen. This is what we want to do..

"Was a common theme on Wednesday, and there were plenty of responses. ESPN insider agent Ward Janowski. They spoke with Michelle Robert. She's the executive director of the Players Association, and she had been in contact with a lot of her players today around the N B. A. And you know the contrast that many of them made where the findings yesterday in Wisconsin of the justifying of the shooting. Jacob Blake. There contrasted with the scene in Washington today, where hundreds and thousands of Maga supporters came and essentially went into the capital unchecked by police and how different that scene may have looked as Doc Rivers also said if those were black and Brown people headed in to the Capitol in Washington and certainly the players association the players is Milica said they had been on the forefront. Of this issue in this fight throughout this past year, and one thing Michelle Roberts told me to today there had been no conversation with the league office about postponing any of the games. The riot at the Capitol left four people dead. The woman who was fatally shot inside the building and D C. Police say there were three others who died of unspecified medical emergencies. On the grounds of the capital. The only sporting event that was scheduled to take place in Washington, D C Wednesday was the college basketball game between U Mass and George Washington. But with Washington D. C under a curfew as a result of the riot, the game was postponed. A 10 will work to reschedule that game SportsCenter all night ESPN radio. "In Thursday's practice. Just a regular drill went down, and that was it. You know, it's the Packers Conduce. Something's to rejigger their offensive line. But this is not a blow that they can recover from. They're still gonna play. I think they're gonna be okay. But This hurts. You take a look at the NFC East and in all honesty, none of us really want to spend too much time looking at the NFC East because of how bad a division it has been this year, but it's still up for grabs. And on Sunday night football. The Washington football team still has a chance to win claim the division title. If they were to lose that game. The winner of the Cowboys Giants game earlier in the day would be the division champion. But Washington. It has been a bizarre year and they separate from Dwayne Haskins this week and Alex Smith. Progressed during the course of the week to be able to come back and start this game, which, I guess has to be the best news that Ron Rivera could have. Yeah. I mean, he you know it was. I think last week he was really, really close. I thought at around. Let's say Friday afternoon last week that Alex Smith, there's going to be the starter and then he came in Saturday and was sore. So then he wasn't the start, And then it was doing Askins and then he got benched. And then, as we reported, he got released waved. And now he's a free agent, and then Alex Smith. You know some really positive developments after that. On Thursday, he took first team raps in individual drills and was able to participate in some team Reps. Very, very good son. Obviously they enough to keep monitoring and make sure that he is going to be monitoring and make sure that he does not have any soreness. But they do believe he's gonna be in there as the starter. What I ask you one more thing from this week because, as you know, I do have an unhealthy fixation on what ends up happening in the off season in the National Football League. We're still trying to figure out what it's gonna look like moving ahead next year. But Players association coming out this week and suggesting that there be no more O t A's or many camps. Are we going to see a major change in what ends up happening and footballs off season soon? I think we may. I don't know what those changes they're gonna look like, But Jacey Traitor is a very respected voice. You someone. Pretty recently the owners did a deal with kind of redoing things as it related to the health and safety agreements for covert. It worked very closely with him the fact that he came out and said He doesn't think there's to be offseason conditioning is noted. I know the NFL expects you to be some changes well, and you know what it might look like is this This is just sort of reading the tea leaves and offering a guest. You might see teams and players meeting virtually so they can still get in their meetings. They can still talk football. You might see players on their own for conditioning and say, April. Do players need to be in there in April and then come in for seven on seven and sort of O T A's in May and June and have that be it. I think that would be fine. I think everyone's comfortable doing virtual things now, so that would be a a pretty good compromise. We will find out as we move forward and once again happy New Year Thanks to talk to you next week. All right, look forward to a happy New year. That's Westwood one weekly contributor and NFL Network Insider. Ian Rapoport up next one of the newest members of the pro Football Hall of Fame. Cliff Harris, This is NFL insider. Oh, all right.
