"And Ethel, she passed away a couple of years ago, she was going to be 14, Fred, again, that was in February. He was going to be 21 if he would have lived to be in July. And one of the things that I was obsessed with was I wanted my next pet to no Fred. So in October, I rescued my chihuahua mini. And that really kind of just relit that fire under my butt that I need to do more because after especially Fred passed away, many her love and affection and just simply being an animal that just wants to be cared for. It really helped me through that because again, my big fear is death and I had two really big anxieties. My grandma passing. I was always like, I called it my gram anxiety. I called my grandma every day to make sure she answered the phone, okay? She's alive. So when Fred was getting old, I always had this Fred anxiety. I was like, God, I don't know what I'm gonna do when he passes. And honestly, many love helped me get through that. And so it's like I have to do more with the charity stuff because I know what she did for me and there's so many different other stories out there. It's like I just, I have to. I have to do something, you know? So, 'cause I haven't really been focused on it too much in these last few years. So now that I've kind of figured out what I want in life, like figuring out my flow, I really feel now is the time to it's time to give back. I was giving back, but then I had to take time for myself because what good are you if you're not good to yourself? So now that I'm better now myself, it's time to give back. And so when you asked that question, I was like, oh my gosh, like how does she know I was just talking about, like, I need to get back into the charities of. That is so excellent. I love how you were able to talk about the animal rescues and how not only will it help other animals, of course, maybe find their homes and help other people, but it's also helping you heal parts of your soul and parts of your childhood and everything in between. So absolutely excellent that you are going to be continuing to stay involved with animal rescues. And these two episodes with you Shelley were absolutely fabulous. We learned so much about you. I'm sure the podcast bostick fanatics listeners are obsessing over these two episodes because you gave so many freaking details. Everything from Pittsburgh man to Hugh.

"Yourself, but also do it with other women and help boost their careers like jump start their careers in a safe zone. So I think that is awesome. I'm looking forward to keeping up with that through you and maybe have you back on this podcast in the future so you could speak about that even more. And as far as your charity work goes before we wrap up the show, how do you give back? And I know that you are involved with animal rescues. You do that in California, or where does this happen? Mostly in California, just because it's easy. You know, my sister and I have always been very passionate about my family is toxic as they were, whatever. They did try. And one of the things that they did try is they my grandma had a nonprofit organization where every year they would have a firework stand during 4th of July, and the money raised for that would go towards Christmas. And she would take application from the people in the hood that were low income and had kids. And we would go and buy presents for the kids based on their age and stuff and then put like a food basket together and this whole giving Christmas to people. So growing up with that, I just saw that there's just people in need. And even though my situation wasn't the best, there were still people out there worst off. So we were always involved in it growing up, but then when I became an adult and just more aware of things, that's when the charities for animals really started because you hear about them when you're a kid. Maybe you see the commercials. It makes you sad, but it's a really understand that,.

"Then when I got fired and I was totally broke, I started making good money doing that again because now I had this name of like, oh, she was Ariel or she was Selena, especially between customs. And that was the only way that I was making money, but then that kind of got shady, like the people that the producers involved. Of course. So I swore them off for many years. And then I ended up doing them again, like a couple years ago, but again, we're in a new era where we can take control over content and stuff. So I kind of morphed it to where I only work with a couple people, but I do my own customs. So what I see in the future is I want to have my own ring so I don't have to rent a ring when I do my videos. And produce enough content to where there is a budget to produce even more. And the reason why it's really important to me is it's not so much about the money, but that world is so tainted with not everyone but so many shady nickel and dime taking advantage egos get involved. And so this producer will try to get in this girl's ear to not like this girl. It's just stupid. And so I want to create an environment where girls and custom wrestling are going to have a good time shooting. We're all going to make some money and the uni feel good about themselves. There's this place I used to shoot at. The guy no offense, but he is a complete order. So it's hard to be in his house where the rings are and walk through it and have to be there and ignore that it's there. It's a lot, you know? And no offense, but you know it's a lot. And so it doesn't make you feel really good and then when you're out there in your wrestling and a bikini and you're trying to just make it fun and not seem creepy, it's hard when your downtime is in this Lake, very weird area. So it's like, I want the girls to feel good. And then on top of it, something that I haven't done, but a lot of girls that do customs do is they do this thing called Sessions where they actually will wrestle guys for real sometimes. And so the book times with these girls in a ring or whatever. And it's like a private session, whatever. And some of the girls that I'm Friends with, they'll do these sessions like in hotel rooms and stuff and.

"So it's like I'm not trying to dog on wrestling. It's just like that's just that's just the black and white facts of it all. There's ugliness there and when I saw the ugliness just with making me be not good version of myself and the hard work that I have done to try to be a better version was taking many steps back. It's like, dude, this is not. It's like, I always refer to wrestling like a relationship, a romantic relationship, how your first love and it's hard to break up and then you think you can just be Friends and then like when they had me come and do that thing and I just did the edible and drank. It's like that's like an equivalent of, oh, we can go have dinner and hang out. You know, we're just Friends. We're just Friends and they're like, oh, I got drunk. Like, no, we're not just Friends, it's not good. I'm glad that you were able to speak about those topics because you were able to essentially tell the boss games fanatics. Why you decided to ultimately retire what happened after you retiring and why you don't even really like to go to comic cons or be associated with that industry that much anymore, which kind of leads up to my next question of what do you see yourself doing in the future? I know you have your dot coms and you work alongside only fans and you have a podcast and I'm sure you make money still modeling. But what do you see yourself doing in the future? And I guess currently, what are you doing now? And then I want to wrap up the show being able to talk a little bit about charity because a big part of our boss famous lifestyle sports podcast is all about charity and I know you are highly involved with animal rescues. So let's talk about the future, the now and animal rescues..

"And at the time, I was thinking, oh yay, they're giving me another chance. But then later in life, I realized dude that was like a slap to my face because I've already been with the company. They were just seeing if I was going to fall in line and I didn't because I immediately got triggered. The first person I saw was somebody I have huge beef with. So I went into the bathroom and I said, the only way I'm gonna survive this is this and I popped the edible and I put vodka in my Gatorade. I ended up confronting like four people and I'm pretty sure they were like, this girl's out of control. She can't be doing this and look at what she's doing. But I'm grateful for that because I would have taken anything they would have given me just so I wasn't broke anymore and I can get back on my feet because the way I looked at it was while social media is the way it is, even if I just go back for a few months, I'll get my name back out there to people who don't know who I am because they weren't watching when I was around. So that's when I was just when the bubbles in China passed away, I was just like, dude, I don't want to go back. Look what happened when I did. It's not good for me. That time is gone. So I had a booking already that had committed to that was in Germany. And that company in Germany, they had had me there a couple times. And they always treat me so good. So good. And I was like, that's a perfect place to retire because I have fun when I go there. So if I'm going to retire, I want to at least my last match to be fun. And it totally was. And that's when I was just like, I'm not doing it..

"It's like find your WrestleMania moment. What's your WrestleMania moment? What that means is, as a wrestler, you like the ultimate is to main event at WrestleMania and have the good match and just get the audience. Your WrestleMania moment. So to me, that was my WrestleMania moment and it's so crazy because I wasn't Ariel and you would think that's what it would be. It was just like the three of us were working so hard to try to make this act work because we knew it would work and we can make money. We were friends, so it would be really cool to be in that group together. And so it's just this WrestleMania moment. And then my second WrestleMania moment was when I was on the independent scene after I had been in WWE and TNA. And a friend of mine, Serena Dee shot out. I met her in Kentucky. "A lot of really awesome talent came out of there. And for me, more importantly, I learned that I was stronger than I thought when I went to that school, including how I left. I didn't make a big stink at the time, and I should have maybe, but I was just like, whatever the lord's going to deal with him, I'm just going to keep moving forward and I did. Wow, that is such a powerful answer, and I apologize for bringing it up. I obviously did not know that anything negative had happens. I just, again, with just like a quick search online, I happen to see that new train there, so I wanted to learn about it. But thank you for shedding light on the fact that Hollywood and any type of entertainment industry in general, there are both good and bad people and not just men. I mean, there's women probably in the industry that are just as terrible as some of the guys in the industry. So I applaud you for being so freaking open and honest throughout this whole lifestyle sports podcast. Thank you guys for listening. I'm your host Britney Baldwin and joining me today is chili Martinez. Wrestler and model and this is part two, but we are diving into what exactly does it take to become a pro wrestler in how everybody has their own method and way of getting to the top. In her case, when we spoke about, she just happened to be an independent film, she went to the school of hard knocks. She had both good experiences and unfortunately, that experience was there as well. But she also got to have a really cool persona. She got to rock some vampire fangs, colorful wigs, dark makeup. She was known as Halloween Barbie. Let's discuss a little bit more about your wrestling career and are there any top memories that you can think of like any specific memory that sticks out. I know you joked around about Vince McMahon and how people kind of walked on eggshells around him, but you kind of had a good work relationship with him, where you would just in passing, he would congratulate you on doing well and you kind of just owns the show, it sounds like. So let's discuss some of your positive experiences that you've had working alongside Vince McMahon and maybe some of your tag team partners while being with the WWE. Absolutely. "The things that he had said that leading up to her being on the munsters because she was reading actress. It was almost like she was preparing to be Willie Munster before lily Munster even existed before the show existed. The different literature she would be reading about folklore and vampires and things like that. So no wonder why she was so good at it. So I thought this is my lily Munster moment here. I'm gonna be a vampire with freaking gangrel. This is awesome. Well, I came back the next day and we were gonna film a bunch of promos and character. And I found out that everyone in that group that I was gonna be with got fired with the WrestleMania sweeps. And I'm like, what? So what's so crazy is I was so disappointed that they didn't use me, Aryan and best together. But what it allowed to happen was a year after I'd been already signed, I ended up becoming a vampire when they revamped no pun intended. ECW, and they had the ECW brand with WWE. So I ended up being the vampire after all. I remember when they asked me what name I wanted, it wasn't like, give us a name. It was more like, here's a list of names. Which one do you want? And I suggested star because star was the name of the vampire on lost boys, but they're like, no, you had to look on the list. So I looked on the list and I saw Ariel and I am a Disney girl. "I think every girl and I can't speak for everybody, but I would say most girls when we were younger, especially after watching that TV show, the girls next door, we all lightly low key fantasize about one and go to the Playboy mansion. Absolutely absolutely. So we will wrap up the talk on modeling girl. It sounds like you crushed it and you're still crushing it because you are still currently modeling in the present. We will talk about wrestling. So guys, for those of you that do not know, this is a sports podcast. As you all know, the lifestyle sports podcast, so of course we are going to talk about Shelley's sports career. You are now listening to Shelly Martinez. This is part two of the episode, part one was all about her family, modeling, everything and anything in between that God her to her wrestling career. So she actually got involved with the sport of wrestling by doing an independent film. So we will first start by having her talk all about being involved with that independent film. Were you casted for a role? Were you doing extra work? Was it a friend's project? How did this come about? So, after I graduated high school, again, Ontario Chino is about 40 miles east of LA. So this first chance I got, I was always driving out here to LA. And he said, any gig I would get, I would always talk about how much I loved wrestling because I figured that one day the right person will hear it and like I could figure out how to be a wrestler. Now, back then, especially here on the West Coast, it was different in the east coast and Midwest, but on the West Coast, it was not very straightforward how you become a wrestler. It's just not. And I just didn't know how to do it. So I just would blah, blah, blah, blah about wrestling, so I became like known as that weird wrestler girl. And a casting director remembered that shout out to sandy Lisa casting. And they put me in this independent film that was centered around wrestling called backyard dogs..

"She has nice long, pretty, I don't know if it's black hair or dark brown here and she has a really pretty matching flower on the side of her head, which I love because I'm all about the chill, beachy vibe. So Shelley, we are going to before we even talk about the fact that you grew up in the California area. Let's just break the ice for the boss waves fanatics. One of your superpowers, if you could have a superpower, you said you wish you could freeze and unfreeze time. So let's discuss that. Okay, so I'm an old fart. As Carrie Bradshaw says, a hot old fart, but I'm an old fart. So back in my day, there was this show called out of this world. And it was like one of those saved by the bell esque kind of shows. And the main character she was half alien half human. And she could freeze and unfreeze time all the time. And I was just so mesmerized by that because not to bring the party down, but my whole life, I have this whole phobia about death. So for me, when I would watch that show and I saw that her powers were that, I thought it was so cool because you could control time and before someone dies before you. It's this whole thing. So that kind of just stuck with me after I saw that show back in the 80s because I was like, man, and then I kind of took it to the next level, and I'd be like, wow. If I really had this power, I would freeze time right now. And I would just imagine all the stuff I would do. I was like, one of my past time. Kind of in a way I've had this superpower. And you know, I thought it was really cool when you asked that question. I was like, man, I know what the answer is. That's freeze and unfreeze time. Super cool. Are you able to sort of talk a little bit about why you are afraid of dying? I know normally we don't talk about these types of topics, but I think it's so interesting. Did you have something happen in the past or you have bad dreams about it? Do you know where that fear might syndrome? Yeah, well, a big portion of my family and my mom's side. There was just a lot of toxic environments. There and a lot of it had to do with a game. I think my relationship with death at such a young age was these like gnarly things that happened that just shouldn't happen and it really messed me up. And I grew up in a Christian church and it was I grew up pretty in this strict household as well. So fear was really pushed upon me..

But I don't regret wanting to be in Playboy, be associated with Playboy. And I don't even regret saying, you know what? I want to live at the mansion. What do I have to do to be a girlfriend? I don't even regret that because all of that gave me all these different experiences. Like whether or not I like Hugh Hefner or not, it's a freaking awesome to go with the Playboy mansion. It's beautiful. And it seems like you're in a dream. And I mean, it's designed to be that way. I've never had a bad time at the Playboy mansion. And I think for me, with the Playboy mansion, from going from a girl with stars in her eyes to especially after I was in WWE and TNA wrestling. So I was on TV. So that opened up different doors to where I was invited to be around different.

I've never met any of these people before. This is based off of stuff that I've read and listened to from one of the top girlfriends, Holly Madison, so Shelly, I applaud you for bringing that up. Well, here's the thing. I kind of, I'm not gonna lie. Sometimes I want to say things like online, but I just, you gotta pick and choose and I just don't want negative energy throw away. And I still was okay with it. I was okay with it. I was going to be very transactional about it. I was okay with it. And the reason why I was okay with it is because I thought, well, he's a guy and makes sense whatever, but he's still trying to get these girls opportunities and blah blah blah blah blah. And then it's like something I remind people with when I do talk about it is people want to associate will Marilyn Monroe and this and that but dude, he bought her pictures. He didn't even shoot her. And I want to know what Marilyn Monroe thought of all that because you don't see any pictures of them hanging out together. It's very not connected. And I guess like naively, I just growing up thought he was just this amazing guy that was like just totally for women empowerment, totally about trying to make a difference, change how things are. And it's like, okay, yeah, Playboy helped bring some awareness to certain things..

"On, as soon as half opened the mansion gates for parties, I was always invited. And it was awesome. I sometimes say that after a while, whenever you got those invitations in the mail, which were beautiful artistic invitations, whether it was a new year's party, a Halloween party, a midsummer night's dream party. After a while you go, do I really want to go to this party, I gotta get an outfit, I gotta maybe get a date, I gotta go, I'm not gonna go. And then about four or 5 hours before the party, you go, what am I doing? I have to go. It's the greatest place on earth. And I have to go for all those guys who can't go. And I would take, I took all my buddies. My nephew is my best Friends, a lot of girls I knew. I invited everybody with me and the best night ever was rosalie and Jack, my sister and brother in law were in town and they came to LA for whatever party or something. We're at mister Chalice. And as dinner was ending, I said, okay, well, you and Joey and Jackie, you're gonna go back to the hotel, but I'm taking Jack to Playboy mansion. And he was like, what? I said, yeah, we're going. He's like, what do you mean? I can't say you're going. Why don't you why? I said, there's a party. We're going. I'm invited. And rel is like, good, go, have fun. "A bad case of rheumatoid arthritis, but I'll tell you what, there were very few women sexier than she was when she hit the scene. I saw what the Playboy mansion one night, which was weird. She was actually leaving as I was walking in. I remember thinking, wait, who is that again? Because she looks so different. And then it hit me. Oh my God, that's Kathleen Turner. What the fuck happened? I'm not the only guy who said that. Even women said that. Now's a good time for me to tell you some stories about the mansion, many of you, but not many, several of you asked me hey, AJ on free ball Friday. Can you talk about the mansion stories? There's so many stories to talk about, whether it's meeting celebrities for the first time or how amazing it was to go, I can tell you that the nights at the Playboy mansion were a lot of fun. If I'm being honest, I got a bigger kick out of writing articles for Playboy than actually going to the mansion. I know some of you will believe that, but it's true. 'cause when I was a kid and I grew up with playboys all around me. I told you my father plastered the walls around my crib with center falls when I was a baby. My mother and my sister couldn't stop him. He said, no. He was right. Not only did I love the mansion, I was friends would have, if I were a lot of people should play boy, you know, he saw the future. But I loved it. I had a thing for words and writers. Don't get me wrong, I love the center falls, but I love words and write it as I always wanted to see my name on the playbill as one of Playboy's writers. Yeah, when I was young and never saw a parent, yes, I love the xenophobes, and I take them in the bathroom all alone. Trust me. But when I got older and writing became my passion, I read these articles by Pete Hamill, Norman mail or Kurt Vonnegut, I'm like, I gotta write for this magazine. To me, it was a status thing. And I always wanted to see my name on that play Bill as one of the Playboy writers. So that was a dream come true. And I wrote about Playboy so much as a daily news gossip columnist. That, you know, I would always report who was gonna be on the cover. You know, what celebrity or who was gonna be playmate of the year. Which was always a huge secret that they kept from everybody. And I would spoil that a week or so before they announced it. I had really good sources within Playboy. Two of them were the Barbie twins. Remember the Barbie twins? Shane and see a Barbie. A lot of you ask whatever happened to them. I can tell you that Shane, who I got really close to. Shane ended up marrying Ken wolf. Remember Ken wall? That cool actor from wise guy? He had a bad, a lot of bad shit happening, Ken wall, but they're very happy. They live in New Mexico or Arizona. They take care of animals. They're not Hollywood at all. They've invited me down to the ranch and shit. Ken had a really bad motorcycle accident, then he split his head open on a pair of marble steps or something and he got really weird about it and injured. So he stopped working, but I had a big crush on Shane in like 92 93. And I met up with her in LA one trip and I only met her because she got mad one day that I wrote in my column that the both of them used to binge and purge to stay thin and that they would only eat Gerber baby food. I figured it would tell me, but it was a true story. So after they called me to give me shit, we ended up getting along famously and became more than Friends. And then, you know, they would give me great stuff about Playboy. They had something to do with so many rumors out in LA. Kenny Rogers was racking up tens of thousands of dollars on phone sex lines, they tell me so many great stories. I can't even this is kind of gross, but he's dead now, but Kenny Rogers used to call them. And just listen to them, talk, and he'd whack off. I mean, Shane and Sia have this way of talking that it's sexy. And back in the 90s, they're posters, they're calendars where everywhere. I think they're way out in Playboy, the bolt, and I'm one of the biggest selling issues ever. They're a trip. They would tell me do you think, but they got mad at me 'cause I figured out somebody told me about binging and purging and the Gerber baby food. Then we got three Friends. And they got to be great sources of mine about what happened inside a Playboy, and they would never wrong. They know all the photographers all the makeup ladies. Everybody loved them. So one day Playboy's publicist, Cindy rakowitz, call me so pissed off about always ruining the secrets and playmate of the year before the announced it. All that shit. And finally, I said, you know what? If you want this to stop, there is some things you need to do. Choose anything. I said, from now on, when you send a celebrity who posed on your cover to New York City, they don't just get to see Howard Stern. They get to see me too. Because I write about Playboy as much as he talks about Playboy, so you gotta feed the beast. There's no reason Cindy Adams gets to see the fucking playmate. No one cares if his 70 year old woman talks to a playmate. Put it with a 35 year old guy. They said, fine, done. I said, I get to have a night on the town with whatever playmate that you sent in New York City. They see me first. Done. That's how I met all these playmates. You went out with fucking comment Electra. You name it. It was a lot of fun. And one more thing. I want to write for Playboy and I want to go to the mansion parties. And they gave me everything I asked for. And my first article I pitched was which one of the actresses on Friends, I like to sleep with. It was basically my version of fuck marry kill before that ever came out. And I Courtney Cox won, I think I fucked Jennifer Mary Courtney and kill Lisa Kudrow. I wouldn't kill it. I like her, but that was the whole gist of the column. And my endless Steve Randall loved the idea and he bought it and that was followed by another 5 or 6 articles. But after that first piece, they flew me out to LA to meet you hefner. We had a nice lunch alone at the mansion and what do you think we did? We talked about girls. And back then I took my Colorado on the column Michael a witness with me. He'd never been to LA, so he was dying with what he saw. And half liked me a lot. He used to say to me, I know you share the dream. I said, yes, I do. So right after I met him, we had nice lunch. I said, I'd like to take a dip in the grotto nude. This was before the mansion parties were back up. This is like 94. He said, knock yourself out. And me and Michael went in the grotto, naked, Cindy rack was the publicist was taking pictures. I have them in storage. I'll post them one of these days. And from that point on, as soon as half opened the mansion gates for parties, I was always invited. European Super League: What It Means for UEFA, Other Leagues

"European soccer league. This was trending on sunday. Basically it's a league that's in the works that would take the best teams from the english. Premier league la liga. which is the spanish league syria. Which is the italian league in the bundesliga. The german league and had them play in a top tier superleague which would be like a season. Long uefa champions league rather than those teams playing their regular leagues the other teams. Just fight it out for the top spot. What does that do to the regular leagues. So critics say it's gonna kill the regular leagues does so well. This is the one positive is it gives leads a fighting chance to win the mvp l. Yeah le- ot that you take the six best teams from england out and lead susan like ninth place right now. The top of it yeah. They're finishing top of the table. So go ahead. I don't like hate on this from kids. That never made the all star team. I wanna see a super league owners of teams like maybe not leads but like fulham's or not on the all star team they're like oh we don't wanna be destitute. Don't lost about invited the playboy mansion right. it's like the teams in laliga. That only sell tickets when real madrid comes to town. Those are the teams. "Playboy Mansion. Tell us about that? Well, that's an interesting track. How did Batman come to be on ABC TV in the first place? Okay, so that's very interesting. So We got its which, you know, you brought up the Playboy mansion in Chicago at the time or it moved to l A in like 72. I think in the sixties you have dinner comes out of Chicago. And you have dinner grew up reading the comics. He loved the comics, and he remembered seeing as a kid the Batman cereals. In the forties. And if you've seen them or seen pictures of them, you know they're ridiculous looking versions of Batman and Robin. I mean, Robin's masters like a domino mask, You'd buy it wars. You know what I mean? Batman and one of those films looks like he's got devil horns. And they're not exactly built like strong. Let's traumas that list. They were lovey Batman. I mean again. When I say ridiculous. There are people that love this stuff. Everybody, You know, because of the Internet. There are fans of everything, both great and bad. You know what I mean? The bad and the rifle. I just saw that movie on TV on TCM. Becar Douglas, You know the bad and the beautiful, you know, but that's that. That's what they were. And and Hefner. Starting in the mid sixties around 64. Aren't showing in his private screening room of the Playboy Mansion. For the entertainment of his very glitterati. Guess which were the height of what was hit back then Tony Bennett would be on. You know, Playboy after dark, you know, you have to, you know? Yeah, I am Piety, Bruce. But You know, he had that late night TV show and you know he was what was hip, You know, you know, this is in the early sixties, you know, right around the time the Beatles You know, in 64, you know, again, Bond mania. You know, these were there was the three B's in the sixties, you know, Bond mania, Beatlemania and bat mania. And, um so Hafner. Is showing these cereals late at night. Who is guests while they're all drinking and partying, and it's like you know what happened with Rocky Horror picture show in the mid seventies, when people would yell back at the screen and dress up all that? And kept in a sense, make fun of the thing that they're watching, and that's what they were doing with Batman. Because they are ridiculous. Old fashioned.

Bored? Games!

"A lot of playing board games these days and that's pretty fitting human making board games for a long time like a long longtime seven thousand years or more for a bit of historical context. We stopped hunter-gathering and settled down to be farmers about ten thousand years ago rather than try to cram seven thousand years in six occupied continents worth of history into a half hour podcast. I'll hit some of the high points. Especially the less well-known once the earliest gaming pieces ever found are forty nine. Small carved painted stones found a five thousand year old burial mound in southeast Turkey. Similar pieces have been found in Syria and Iraq and seemed to point devoid games originating in the Fertile Crescent. You remember the Fertile Crescent from the first week of world history class. It's the same region discovered alcohol invented papyrus and made calendars all of which you need. If you're hosting game night other early dice games were created by painting a single side of a flat. Stick these sticks would be tossed at once and that would be your role Mesopotamia. Dice were made from a variety of materials including carved knuckle bones would painted stones and turtle shells. No wonder folks used to say roll them bones dice from the Roman era. Looks like the six sided die. We use today though. Some of them had their corners. Cut off to be able to reach a higher number not unlike dungeons and dragons dice. Imagine excavating a distant Roman out host and finding a D twenty serious cricket board games became popular among the Pharaohs of Ancient Egypt. And that shouldn't surprise. That board games were a bigger part of life for upper class people since they have both money for entertainment and time to play. Even before the first dynasty Egypt loved a game called Senate. It's even seen on. The walls of tombs and copies of the game are buried with noble people. Ancient Egyptians were strong believers in the concept of fate. And that your luck in the game of Senate meant that you were under the protection of the major gods of the Pantheon raw toe to toe Cyrus. The significance of the game is clear. The game play not as clear. Historians have made educated guesses as to the rules more on that later and Board Game. Companies have used those guesses as a jumping off place to make modern versions. Four Games also became tied into religious beliefs. One such game was Mahan played around three thousand. B C e Mahan was a protective God depicted as a snake with coils around the Sun God raw during his journey through the night the game and the God became intertwined. Tim Kendall and ancient Egyptian historian believes that it's not possible to know for sure with the information we have available whether the game was inspired by an existing deity or the Deity was inspired by the game. Many people think backgammon is the longest plate of all the board games with evidence that it existed around two thousand B C but there is an extant game. That is a little bit older. Relatively speaking the royal game of for the game gets its name from being found in the royal tombs of in Iraq. There was also a set found in Pharaoh. Tutankhamun tune the game. Play is simple but very familiar. You're trying to get all of your pieces around the board first thumping off your opponent's pieces along the way again. Proving there's nothing new under the Sun. The royal game of herb was played with four sided or tetrahedral dice. A D Four for the tabletop games out there. Even though the game's over four thousand years old amazingly we found a copy of the rules Irving Finkel the British museum deciphered cuneiform tablet and discovered. It was the rules for the Royal Game of Earth. He then saw a photograph of a nearly identical board game being played in modern India. That makes the Royal Game of Earth. The longest played game in history and there is a great video of Irving Finkel. Who has ever so pleasantly mad teaching youtuber or Tom Scott how to play Lincoln the show notes and a little clip right here. Because I just couldn't help myself. All sorts of evidence has come to live so that we know how this game was played and we can play it now with a great deal of excitement. Sometimes it brings out violence. Come Times it brings out savagery. I have to say that this so we've decided to bring in a member of the public. I can't remember the name on Tom. Scott I make videos about science technology in the world. Who's never paid this game before? I have never played this game before. I'm Gandhi swift overview of the walls. Hope he masses and I'm getting to play of course play gently at first because I don't say hi to hang I'm to wipe the floor with it wouldn't do it for me even discovered these rules and I'll throw in his mind. Game listing whitlow. Marta is similar to that question of modern. There were some minor differences s today. Each player has fifteen checkers and uses six sided dice to be the first to bear off. All of one's checkers. I confess that I am reading that. From a website verbatim. I know less about that. Yemen do cricket. Backgammon had a renewed surge of popularity in the nineteen sixties which is held longtime for a comeback. Thanks in part to the charisma of Prince Alexis. Obolensky the father of modern backgammon cigarette liquor and car. Companies began to sponsor tournaments and Hugh Hefner held backgammon parties at the Playboy Mansion. At the same time that the Romans were playing Latin backgammon. The Chinese were play. We she or you may have heard of it. Go Que- she may even predate the game of twelve markings and the royal game of Earth. According to legend which has a pesky habit of morphing into history quay g was created by the ancient Chinese. Emperor Yell to teach his son on Ju discipline. Concentration and balance the popularity of wage e grew throughout Eastern Asia especially in Japan. Which is where the name go comes from another ancient game which is still out there and a favourite of nearly every household in my family is the African game of Mangala in our modern parlance. Munkala refers to a specific game. But the name actually belongs to an entire genre of games a genre eight hundred traditional games strong. This family of Board Games is played around. The world is referred to as Sewing Games S. O. W. I N. G. Devotes the way that you pick up and drop the stones playing pieces like you were sowing seeds in the ground. The word Mukalla comes from the Arabic Nicola to move most one college games share a common structure where each player has gained pieces in divots on the board and moves them to capture their opponent's pieces leading them to also be called count and capture games. The boards can be wooden clay even just little holes in the dirt playing pieces of everything from seeds. Stones shells anything near at hand that fits in the holes. The earliest evidence of the game are fragments of pottery. Board found in Eritrea dated to the sixth century CE. Though if the games were played with seeds on wooden boards or pebbles in divots in the dirt the game could be even older. The absence of evidence is not evidence of absence after all that particular logical fallacy is called argument from ignorance at ignorant him. And it's not a good look now. We go to the land of ice and snow of the Midnight Sun. Where the hot springs flow Scandinavians played chess. Like game called. Nevin tough at least as early as four hundred see. Let's call it. Unexpected cultural exchange archaeologists have also discovered that it was popular as far to the east as Ukraine.

What Else Did Shel Silverstein Write?

"Decades ago in the evenings around closing time a man with a very bald head and a very dark beard used to come sloping into the mysterious bookshop in New York City. His shoulders hunched is the warding off a perpetual cold wind. The proprietor auto pens ler had come to expect these visits indeed. He looked forward to them. He would close up the shop and guide the man back to his. Inner Sanctum. A book lined study with floor-to-ceiling shelves there the bearded man would deliver a Sheaf of papers containing a new freshly penned mystery story to be added to the theology. That Pencil publishing the writer refused to take any money for his efforts. Even though pens lawyer was paying well. He craved compensation. His eyes gleamed as pennsly- slid his payment across the desk between them. It was a stack of used books containing dozens of stories written in the mystery genre later that night he would devour them one by one but first pens lawyer and the bearded man would talk and talk. They talked about books about life. Auto pens layer was just recovering from a devastating break-up and so they spoke about battling in a recent phone interview for this article. Pennsly- remembered that at a certain juncture. His guests said something so piercingly insightful and eloquent about the break up that it took his breath away Henseler said I wish I could remember what he said but I failed to write it down what I do remember. Is that when I expressed my amazement at his facility with words he just shrugged and said I guess that's why they call me a poet. He could've added among many other things because our bald and bearded man was Shel Silverstein a true renaissance man. Of course many of us know him as the author and illustrator of the giving tree a light in the attic and where the sidewalk ends among many of the other wildly successful books that he wrote Andrew for children. That's only the tip of the proverbial Iceberg Silverstein also drew cartoons and wrote plays for adults and penned numerous songs especially country songs. In fact he won. Two grammys for song. Writing one of them for the Johnny Cash. Hit A boy named Sue Sheldon Allen. Shel Silverstein was born into a Jewish family in Chicago in nineteen thirty his father and a bakery which only began to thrive in the wake of the Great Depression. After high school. Shell spent some time studying at the Art Institute of Chicago and later Roosevelt University but was drafted into the US army serving in Korea and Japan. Silverstein began working for the military periodical. Stars and Stripes and it was there that he began regularly publishing his idiosyncratic cartoons after his military service Silverstein got a job as a cartoonist. For the fledgling magazine. Playboy for his playboy gig. He traveled the world sending cartoon dispatches from Bahrein wide in nineteen sixty three Silverstein. Met Book Editor Ursula Nordstrom. Who prodded him into writing books for Children? And that same year he wrote the giving tree a book about the nature of Altruism and selfishness there would become his most famous and popular work his sense of the absurd and the whimsical cartoon line drawings that illustrated this and all of his books would become his hallmarks in deceptively simple language. His exploration of the innocence and imagination of childhood made him one of the most celebrated and widely read authors for generations of children and adults like Auto Penn's lair recall Silverstein telling him that he spent a year living at the playboy mansion as a guest of Hugh Hefner. "Designing women just took a big step closer to its TV return twenty-five years, wrapping it's seventies and run on ABC. It looks like it has handed out a script commitment on. What is being billed as a sequel to the CBS comedy? The new designing women will follow the next generation of sugarbakers with a crop of new young female designers at an Atlanta interior design for the project, which has been in the works for several months of ABC looks like it comes from the same studio that produced the original and Sony Pictures television and sources say original cast member full occasionally, stop by and to take on new roles in the series. AJ Talks Cameras, Privacy and Hefner Relationship Advice

"I remember walking into the mansion one night, and I see this poster, this sign. I think it was 2005, but basically the sign was a warning, letting everybody know you're going to be filmed once you walk past this gate. And I'm thinking, that's fucked up. Why would anybody want their actions or their image at the Playboy mansion to be displayed anywhere? It was the moment when it became apparent to me. And crystal clear that you have there wasn't the only person making decisions of the mansion. Because I just sat down with him several years earlier when I needed his insight about a relationship I had with a girl that was going bad. And I went to the mansion and sat down, had a nice lunch with a guy, was 1996, and I laid out my problems. And I said this girl wants to get serious. And I was telling him my career is just starting to take off. I can't do that. Because of what I do, I can not settle down. And I honestly sought advice from him because sale you want about the guy, but there's nobody on earth who knows more about women than hef. And he was very calm, very enlightening. And he didn't blow me away with his intellect. He just basically told me, look, you can't settle down, but you can't let that girl think for a second that you maybe want to settle down. He told me it was time for complete honesty. And if she really loved me, she'd understand and respect what I said. Of course, when I told her that we should take a break, she didn't quite take it the way he anticipated. She punched me in the jaw and locked herself in the closet with a bottle of pills. But I got her out of there. And it kind of worked out. Just like have set. But what also happened at lunch that day was me looking around the grounds at the mansion and just shooting the shit with the guy about the greatest stories in the world of what those parties must have been like in the 70s and 80s. And when he told me some tales, a lot of which included James Caan naked in the grotto, he always made it a point to mention how important privacy was to the people who came there. At one point, he said privacy is a great tonic and truth serum. I love that line, privacy is a great tonic and truth

Hugh Hefner's Aging Is the End of a Beautiful Era

"I've lived a nomadic lifestyle since my divorce in 1991. Over the last 25 years, I've lived in like ten different houses or apartments. As a result, with all those moves, I've lost I've lost a lot of great personal effects to mark a lot of memories along the way. Some got stolen from movers with sticky fingers, a lot got destroyed when the stripper who lived above me in Hollywood had a leaky bathtub and gallons of water rained down inside my closet and destroyed a lot of stuff. But some of those memories are buried in a box somewhere in my backyard shed. And the one box I'm dying to find is a great has a great big stuffed envelope inside that contains about 50 beautiful invites to the Playboy mansion parties. Anybody who's received these in the mail can tell you they are meticulously done. And they're all beautiful art pieces on their own. And I've always thought about making a giant frame with all those in fights inside one day because sadly an invite to a party at the Playboy mansion is a thing of the past. As are the memories that come from a night spent there amid the beautiful grounds, the gorgeous pool, the myriad of zoo animals surrounded by your favorite celebrities and the most ball aching beautiful girls you've ever seen. I mean, where else can you hang out with Jack Nicholson or play pinball with Leonardo DiCaprio? And then have a peacock watch you bang miss November behind the monkey cage. The answer is both nowhere and not anywhere ever again. Because sadly, you have to can't live forever. In fact, at 91 years old, it's kind of common knowledge that is health is pretty much failing. What's not common knowledge is that he's been pulled away from the day to today operations at the mansion. And where it has it, he no longer shall we say is allowed to take every phone call or receive personal visits from some friends. And there are people close to the situation that charring crossroad and holmby hills that are almost calling it a case of elder abuse. And while I can't unequivocally say that is the case, I can say that it's a special kind of crime when the man who was so responsible for allowing a generation to feel and express love can no longer be the recipient of both love and admiration when he most
