"Twitter has been under new management for exactly 50 days today, and it has been a ride. Layoffs and leaks, suspensions and unsuspecting and headaches, and more headaches for brands and the people at those brands whose job it is to manage those perfectly crafted marketing and advertising tweets. Social media managers across the country are thus now getting some tough questions from their risk averse CEOs. What should we be tweeting right now? And more existentially, should we even be tweeting? Marketplace is Matt Levin has that one. Elites a gene Charles really didn't put that much thought into one of the most successful marketing campaigns. She's ever launched. I was just hanging out on my air mattress in my new apartment waiting for furniture. And I just sent this tweet out. Gene Charles is the 28 year old founder of healthy roots dolls. It makes dolls designed to give young black girls a toy that looks more like them. While waiting for her real bed to arrive, Jean Charles tweeted side by side photos of her headshot and one of her dolls. The dolls curly hair look just like hers. She captioned the tweet the founder, the product, a twist on a popular meme. I think I went about my business that day and I was like, why is my phone blowing up? The tweet got more than 815 thousand likes and a 107,000 retweets and from there. We got featured in The Oprah magazine. We got a Forbes feature, and a target buyer reached out. We ended up getting into target the next year. Jean Charles now spends about 9 hours a day on social media during weekly meetings with her marketing team, Twitter gets its own devoted conversation. Actually, since Elon Musk took over, those conversations about Twitter are now daily. They talk about what they see other brands talking about. So are we tweeting today? Are we supposed to, do we just keep talking? 'cause not only is all this negative energy going on on Twitter, but it's also Q four, which is when a lot of businesses are expecting to perform. And so it's like, what do we do? Muscaria Twitter is putting brands in a tough spot if you leave the platform because you think he's emboldening hate speech, you abandon an audience, you've spent lots of time and resources building, says Stacy smallen Schwartz at Rutgers business school. But if you stay, there's this possibility. You know, white extremist post is happening next to my posts for Oreos and someone takes a screenshot of that and it looks like I'm endorsing that. That's bad. That does sound bad. Alex burst decided the risk was just too high for his company to keep tweeting. We felt that what was happening on Twitter, hateful things. We felt we could not participate. Burch is the chief operating officer of playbill, the Broadway theater magazine. Playbill publicly announced it would stop tweeting a few weeks after must take over. Playbills Twitter account had more than 400,000 followers and accounted for more than a 100,000 visitors to its website every month. But in the theater community that playbill caters to getting off Twitter had an upside. We have honestly gotten just applause. Playbills decision is the exception, not the rule, while some brands have stopped advertising, most are staying on the platform. Because while certain people on the left have threatened mass exodus, the overall audience can't seem to quit. They may be leaving Twitter in moments in their soul, but based on the data that is not what we are seeing. Tonya Yuki tracks brands use of digital media at the analytics company comm score. Among those brands, tweets are down about two to 3% since the must take over, but engagement retweets quote tweaks, likes, that's up about the same amount. You know, usually when you see a platform in trouble, you'll see more posting and then less interaction per piece of creative. So this is actually really healthy. But for brands that have long struggled with nailing that delicately cheeky Twitter tone, must maybe the final straw. You know, it's sort of like at some point when you're in a party and people are all deep in conversation with another in your walking in and you're trying to break into it and it gets hotter and hotter as the evening progresses, right? Elites a Jean Charles says she's still enjoying the party. She and healthy roots dolls are staying on Twitter. The reach is just too valuable and she says she really hasn't seen anything too upsetting in her feeds yet. But she does draw a line at one new feature paying 8 bucks a month for the privilege of that blue verified check mark. She says it's always felt kind of elitist and now. I don't want people to think that I support the new management and the way that they've approached the platform and the actions that they're taking. Of course if Twitter ultimately follows the path of MySpace or friendster brands can still turn to Instagram and Facebook and TikTok, you know, those other social media platforms that have never caused divisiveness or misinformation or

"Following program was taped before an audience of no one From NPR and WWE Z Chicago this is wait wait don't tell me the NPR news quiz I'm the little pamphlet that tells you the star you came to see won't be performing tonight I'm the playbill Bill Curtis and here's your host A man who hopes that people will stop showing up at the theater hoping to see his understudy Peter sagal Thank you Bill So for the past two years or so we here at great weight have done 85 shows without an audience at home over Zoom Today's show is number 86 which is appropriate because it is finally time to 86 the Zoom calls 86 is old timey slang meaning to end Now let me tell you the meaning of some of my other favorite numbers starting with four 20 Well hang on Bill we've got stuff to do Starting next week we will be back in front of a live audience at our new home in Chicago the studebaker theater and we need a little time to get ready There's so much to do There's wardrobe There's makeup There's vocal warm ups unique New York unique New York near day New York Now while we're busy doing that we thought we'd entertain you with some remarkable material we recorded over the last year including some things you have never heard before Let's start with country music star Casey musgraves who we spoke to in January Peter ask her about this start of her career when she went on a music competition show And lost For just a blip of a second you know just long enough to get my feelings hurt and go home Wow Is the show still going on if they invited you to come back No No No They figured out they couldn't pick talent They just sort of you know let the whole thing die We were looking into your background and your start and I found out something that is I hope is true that one of the things you did is a very young artist was to entertain at the sweet potato festival in golden Texas Oh hell yes I did Oh my gosh Huge gig Thank you so much I want to know everything about the sweet potato festival and gold in Texas The sweet potato festival happens every year It's in my tiny little hometown of gold in Texas All the old ladies do like bake offs with sweet potato casseroles and pies They crown a sweet potato queen Tell me it was a year No You know I tried out for so for the little kids they have little miss tater tot and little mister kid hot And I didn't win that freaking competition either okay Four subjects So but did you did you in fact get up as a child with your guitar and play So I did try out for little miss tater tot It did not fare well for me But it's funny though I do actually have this video of my mom walking me kind of across the stage I had this little Prairie dress on I was clutching a doll And the MC of the night said in such a country accident it's like it's really cute but she says this Casey musgraves She loves pizza sparkly dresses movies singing looking at books not even reading books She said looking at books She don't like bedtime She don't like bugs and she don't like the word no And I'm like still true Hey at least I'm still me Yeah I know I love looking at books and I hate the word now Were you one of those kids who like was just knew you were destined for stardom or has it all been sort of like a weird thing that you never expected to happen everything that's happened Well I lived in Austin before Nashville I think it was my parents way of saying all right you can give the music industry on your own kind of a shot And yeah I mean there were some really awkward time Just eating a bunch of ramen noodles and yeah trying to make some ends meet Did you have any really weird gigs as a struggling musician where you're like all right they're paying me I'll show up Oh I'm definitely played some very strange gigs for sure but I guess one of the most memorable things that I have done which it doesn't really pertain to music that much But when I came to Nashville I had this other friend who worked for this company who they did children's birthday parties like you would dress up in a costume as Cinderella or Ariel and come you know change the lives of these birthday children and faces and have the best time and make it like a hundred bucks and then get out of there And I was like okay hell yeah like I'll sign up for that Like that sounds really wholesome and fun So I sign up for this job The first gig that I got with him was to go to this park It was a kid's birthday party and they requested Miley Cyrus They requested Hannah Montana And I was like okay so they gave me this like terrible terrible wig And I had to put an outfit together that kind of looked like Hannah Montana I had a boom box and I had to the idea was that I'd get out of my car which was a really beat up Honda element from 2006 So I get out of my green Honda element I press play on the handle on Hannah theme song and I like go up to the kids it's the birthday party They're not impressed at all They're like you ain't the real Hannah Montana They're like tugging on my wig Paint a couple faces The mom pays me in chains and she's like I don't know here Tell me a bunch of change in a bag Change She gave you like coins It was like mostly changed Okay And I was like okay cool All right The next day actually I get a call From the same company and they're like all right we have another birthday party And I was like cool and fingers crossed It's like Ariel you know Snow White or bell or something And they're like so this one it's a little different They're looking for a French made to deliver balloons to a birthday boy It's like an industry birthday party down at the palm restaurant downtown A French maid And to deliver balloons Like a woman was this boy do you know I was like thank God that I had like a shred of dignity because I was like absolutely not And I said no and it turned out to be a birthday party for Blake Shelton who later on you know I would have like as I got into the Nashville industry I probably would have known a lot of people in that room Wow You almost and then I quit You should address you should address this Hannah Montana and be like hey I'm on the Internet I should have dressed as Blake Shelton.

"All the audience interaction. And that's what we did last year. Two thousand fifteen I decided to produce it. I never produced anything before. But i said what the hell so I found a great space brooklyn. Bushwick we did it there for months. we got a lot of notice. Your times actually came very cool and and You know it was sort of a a I shot and see what it will but it was in the people liked it. People did like it. We decided that. Made sense to move into manhattan and i was fortunate enough to connect with parkside lounge on the house in st Where we started playing every wednesday Back in september two thousand sixteen and then as the As christmas time got closer they came back and said you know. It's doing very well when we moved to the weekend. So that's where we are right and Is there a. is there an end date. Are you guys going to be playing for awhile on weekends. We are gonna. We're actually right now clinton every other weekend which is a little confusing our audience. Frankly people never sure which we were playing. So we're actually in some discussion right now about that right now. We are We're we're playing. We are contracted to play through. March the eighteenth the weekend of of saint patrick's day and then after that it's a little up in the air but There is definitely discussion. Going around about about Continuing on some fashion ad. Also doing it every week rather than ever now. is this a set. Cast or does the cast rotate. It's changed several of about three of the people in the show now for four people in the show now were in the brooklyn version but One of them had dropped out for a while and came back. And you. it's definitely rotated casper. Were always always bringing in new actors and You know people can only do so much so so We we're we're we're lucky to have the amount the amazing talent that we do and i'm happy to have had a several of the of the actors stick with us for a while but we're we're Periodically find new people to determine sure and How how did the casting process work from this just Mostly just put out in the ads on backstage playbill Traditional theater casting process where You know initially when we didn't brooklyn we put out a casting call. We got had a three hundred responses which was amazing And you know these days with youtube and You know a lot of building to watch Figs online. I was actually my director and choreographer. I looked at as many of those. We couldn't before we met people made sure we were there. Were some women who wants me and then we narrowed that down to about one hundred people who met with and then eventually chose eight And some of the people that we didn't use the first time around but we really liked the lot nevertheless we actually asked to come back later. Another version so there's been some cool. The music i i was really pleasantly surprised. It was really is really kind of a toe tapping score in. How did that originate. I mean that's to do a play is one thing but to do a musical. That's a whole nother animal. I i wrote the. I'm i'm the composer on so thank you And i've written a number of musicals. Warm is actually my first. But you know. I think it's been an interesting challenge to do a musical as an immersive play. There aren't a lot of them. There's one right now on broadway. Called the tasha guarantee greg car which is structured a different way than us We are really free flow. You know every week. You never know what's going to happen or who's been saying. Why are someone's going to stand in your way. You gotta move the the actress running across the ruben subtleties. Someone is there. Didn't expect to be there. They gotta move them out of the way or worried or include them in the show out so that's was an. I wasn't sure how that was all going to work if they were singing songs. Because that's not really Have there been other things like tony. Tina's wedding for example. Pretty well pretty well known one but they weren't. They weren't performing songs like we are at dansk routines so there was a lot more improv. Going with that. This is much more structured situation so it was challenged. We weren't sure how has been work but it works You know somehow or other. The cast never loses their their focus. Ablaze said they know where they are usually remember the lyrics. And it's all fine you know so so it's worked. It's worked out all right. I also the show you know. It's it's about half as long as what it originally was we. We kind of we a lot of songs out of it to make it simpler and easier to understand and also we had game shows like i saw that so so it so it's now You know it's not as it's not as complicated musicals originally was we try to keep it simple. Their website is planet. Wando dot com. You can get tickets. And that is time capsule episode to seventy four. I'm tony tomato. Thanks so much for listening. Hi i'm vm. "I go backstage almost every time i go to the theater now which by the way as a fan is a wild experienced. Be like this is my norm. It's as if i'm going to like my best friends. High school production of like waiting for them to come out. And now it's broadway. And i'm doing that are what are you kidding. But that is crucial in that tells me that like i actually think that tells me that and doing something right but because of the very specific style of writing i do again this goes into like editor writer territory and it also goes to like the platform that i was writing four and how. I am renovating this question. Now that i am not at playbill because for those who don't know i was there for five years and it was incredibly rewarding. I am so grateful to that place for all of the opportunities that were presented to me. That i you know took advantage of every single one. I started out as the features editor became the senior features editor. And then right. Before leaving was the executive editor of features in branded content to kind of incorporate the executive producing that i started doing and so playbill not only is like a big one stop shop and a very small staff like. There's a reason why playbill print reviews playbill. Prince you know the like the roundup of reviews when reviews come out so that we are providing like playboy was providing that resource to its audiences without taking its own stand because playbill's are distributed in the theaters so it acknowledges the fact that like quote. We can't be unbiased But we're not going to deprive audiences of reviews altogether so that's how that was handled. In the same way features it features a very liberating place to be. Because i only had to write about things that i found interesting. And i think that's the thing too about you know when you're reading a magazine and you read the letter from the editor. The reason that page exists is because it is important for you to understand. Who's point of view you're buying into an editor is a point of view..

"I think he is the best Sophomore in the state But as far as other newcomers. I you know there was a couple of the ones i thought. You know. peers clarkson certainly Impress me this year coming on it as a sophomore quarterback at at bosko through for five hundred thirty six yards nine touchdowns zero interceptions completed. Seventy three percent of his passes also ran for over two hundred yards and a touchdown. So can't pierce clarkson's a guy that really impressed me. And other break-up guys. I saw ben. Florentine was a guy that came on for for servite at d. Line every game. I was watched him play. He made a sack. I think against bosco against modern day and santa margarita. He was always in the backfield. Making big plays ben flooring team and then of course i mentioned kingston the number twenty seven linebacker freshman for saint john bosco. He was another one. That i was impressed. Me but who was your newcomer of the year sky in the in the eternity one was a very tough one for me I kept weighing back and forth. You know. I didn't co this one. But i have a lot of automations but i ended up with pierce clarkson okay and so basically for what he said. I made like if he you know basically if i think if boston wins and he has you know maybe a couple of you know bigger plays he ends up being the mvp. I know he shared duty with with hauser of but it just seems like with his dual threat of building. He just seemed to be you know eight. I'll like we had said we talked about. How at ease you know he would roll out to offer. Run huge step back re connecting. He was nine of ten. You know up until This modern day game. He was nine of ten infers. Last with five touchdown passes so you know that that should be interesting to see where they go With with this system but as far as the rest of my newcomers you know there's you know obviously mccain was right there you know the thing with matteo yes he you know he makes playbill for me..

The circumstantial evidence is pretty Pretty substantial. Yeah. I mean, I think the reason is because he refuses to come to America to go to court. Yeah, you know, Yeah, German, But there's no criminal prosecutions. All civil is far as I understand. Yeah, I think that's the case. Epic-Apple battle finds new judge

"I'm starting to think we're GONNA need a playbill to keep up with WHO's doing what and apples fight against fortnight publisher epic Games. The judge is already presiding over to class action lawsuits against apple that are similar to what epic is suing the company over. Convenience for the court with a heaping helping of inconvenience for. Because of the change, the be says the game maker will now have to resubmit its motion for a temporary restraining order. That's the move I told you about earlier this week that would keep up from kicking epic games out of the APP store and new king it's developer account. Hamilton's Choreographer Explains The Secret Messages In Its Dance Moves

"Many people nationwide have been waiting for Hamilton to hit Disney plus with the hit Broadway musical, fittingly arriving right before Independence Day, and when the country could really use an uplifting and patriotic story about resilience. Lin Manuel Miranda has obviously been celebrated and deservedly so for his wide ranging contributions to the musical. There's a lot of other creative minds at upbringing choreographer. Andy Plankton Beulah. WanNa Tony for his work on it so when you're watching Hamilton. Pay Close attention to the movements of both Alexander Hamilton and Aaron Burr. Every gesture is designed to highlight the personalities or foreshadow the story Hamilton was a free thinker while Burr was rigid. That's why Andy explains to playbill quote. Every movement Aaron makes is linear while everything with Hamilton is circular. If either characters falling into his cycle of fate, they turn to the left, and if they're resisting fate, they turn to the right fascinating

Ashley Blaker: Goy Friendly

"Talk about some. I'm pretty heavy issues. Israel Iran Patriot of Jews. So our next guest is a pretty big leap for us. Ashley Blaker is Jewish standup comedian. He is the first Orthodox Fox Jewish comedian to be given his own BBC. Show Ashley Blaker. GOYA's guide to Judaism which returned to the air in October. Two Thousand Nineteen. Now he's in New York for his latest off off Broadway. Show Ashley Blaker Goi friendly which premieres at the Soho playhouse. On February third and runs through February twenty third. While his previous off-broadway production strictly unorthodox was tailored for Jewish audiences. This one he says is not just for the Jews. It tells the story of how Ashley's close friendship with Muslim. Comedian Imron on. UCS completely changed his life with antisemitic incidents on the rise around the globe and even here in New York actually hopes to make the audience laugh but also understand stand a little bit more about their Jewish neighbors Ashley. Welcome to our studio. Thank you for having me so I have to ask you right out of the gate. anti-semitism is not funny. So how how do you address that topic with humor. Well the reality is I think he's anything can be funny. So I'll let you come to Louis showing judge whether I make. It isn't about antisemitism. I should say that there is actually a section is a band. Semitism thought. I think the more interesting is the fact that that when antisemitism is on the rise there are two ways of dealing with. This is a way of kind of hunkering down. Just going. We're we're now gonNA stick to ourselves and and try and protect ourselves and put up the security barriers and let's have lots of armed guards on the on the door in social ones bags and all of that stuff all you can kind of outreach. As it were and try and engage with the outside world and that's what my shows about about the latter it's about reaching out to the outside world and in a way this makes wants a comedy show. You know hopefully nonstop funny. Sound sound incredibly dry but Hopefully demystify Judaism a little bit. That's certainly one of the aims. Okay well I would say you could do both right. Do the security see the undercover getting having no security either. All kind of you know very good at that accused but I actually my playbill. I wrote a Performance note and for Bates Him. But I said something about how you know very good dividing ourselves as a as an in one of the things into I enjoy doing you mentioned my show strictly and also those I I love bringing choose together because we figured it kind of separating ourselves in so many different ways you know on the whole joke about the Jewish man who lands on a desert island and he builds two synagogues one ones that he'll go to one that he wouldn't ever be seen dead and that's like what we're like but I do think that there is it is an important time to actually reach out a little bit and we can. I think sometimes certainly not in any way suggesting that we. We are in any way a foot four and symptom of course but I sometimes think that actually being too insular. Isn't that helpful. Listen so now you are from the UK so well the Labor Party. I have to ask you about the Labor Party. I'm afraid But it's often regarded as the political liberal party of choice by many Jews in Great Britain. And I'm curious how you dealt with the last election and whether or not you felt politically homeless as I kept had reading about the Jewish community. There didn't myself but I'm sure other people did and I think that yes certainly in the post for many Jews the Labor faulty will have. I've been there home by just as much as the Conservative Party would be for many Liberal Democrat. We have quite a different political system. Should know to to to the Americans as many but yes I mean. It was incredible. What happened over the last few years and how symtas I'm just rose and seem to not be dealt with toll within the Labor Party in? Yeah it was a terrible thing we still really really been dealt with properly gone away. Yeah I know there were. There were several vile things said many vile things said ed by Labour politicians but then also Jeremy Corbyn himself was talking about the lack of irony that many British Jews seem to have. I don't know if you recall that particular. Yes it was Avia. Yeah it was a video I think from a while ago. Actually but he had yes he had said something. And there's a lot of these kind of allusions I think is because they. They caught clever then. They don't outright. This isn't the foul right then marking the street saying killed the Jews. It's a very allusive. Quite clever thing of of Hinson these particular weight alluding that Jews and Israel inflating the to and to you know the whole talking about antisemitism and anti Zionism also that that things that really came along with the Labor Party and I saw something videos of people saying no no we. We're not intimately to we like the right to choose. I think there's that thing of the good news and the bad news and I think that's a really good. Jews has ones March against Israel and kind of write letters to the Guardian saying that we support Sanctioned bedia smell that kind of thing uh-huh and then the ninety five percent of the badges. I mean that's clearly terrible things so it's been a really dark period and I didn't know it'll be interesting to see in the the next four five years. How things change? Have you tried to address it with humor. There over showed. I just did a toll in opened in in May with my friend Imran you mentioned draymond so imminent. He did a tour together called profit sharing actually breaking news in profit sharing seek clever title. And it's not address head on there are other people addressing this head on and the the truth is the way to look on twitter five minutes especially around the time the election to see that kind of Echo Chamber people. Don't WanNa hear they. You know you you tweet. Something about Labor Jeremy Corbyn and immediately comes back. This prepared list of twenty times. Jeremy Corbyn has both a motion ocean in parliament. That's been helpful to community Blah Blah Blah say. No one listens to each other anymore. People just spout the same thing. So I'm not sure engaging in that kind of way addressing head on is that helpful she because people just don't want to listen right. I'm sure it's the same here with trump and I'm sure there are people who are vehemently say one one thing you don't want to listen to the side. Yes that is. That is a problem that area. So I think that's something we've seen a lot particular around brexit and all these issues as we've had in the UK and the F. But so my show anyway. Mike show look comedy show. That's the the the main PARV. So I'll tell you briefly I mean essence shows. It's about yeah. Tell us about the show but then I also want to hear more about Enron and your friendship so the show about my friend she was Enron said. So that's the kind of I think in film in terms they call that the macguffin. He's kind of you know that you heard that term. I'm not familiar with that. So it's like using the original star wars. I think C. Three Po an onto d two of the macguffin that they're the ones like sent off into onto the desert and enter tattooing. They've got the messages item. Thank you the whole plot revolves from. Then there's no actually about them but it starts from them so in a way money's the macguffin hit because is a true story we're good friends we went untold together. And he's very interested custody my life he didn't know much about Judaism me belly of June. We spent many hours together in the call. He was always drawing because he he's Muslim. Couldn't in claiming been drinking and he's always asked me questions and I kind of wanted to teach him about Judaism. But where do you start. We've got six hundred thirteen commandments. It's too long to the call I didn't want to spend money on guests so I thought well I teach him about the Ten Commandments. And we started looking at the Ten Commandments. And I unrealized. They're not that practical you know he doesn't have an ox next all so there's no need to worry about not coveting it and I so I could. Maybe set myself challenge of coming up with my own ten commandments. That I could be a bit more practical. But they could actually explain what it's like to be an Orthodox Jew in two thousand twenty and in a way. It was my friendship with him. That made me reconsider my Judaism. Because she had I've been living as an Orthodox Jew for the best part of twenty years but it's only when an outside comes along install challenging us at you start having to think about it you start thinking about your love. So that's what the shows about and it's about me going through these ten commandments. My New Ten Commandments. antiquing this to him okay. So do you mind sharing a few of the talk commanded if you're the one of them is thou shalt develop obsessive compulsive disorder okay. She's an integral Paulsville so shoot as But we cover branch of Judy. Check that box right exactly. So we cover a lot of these areas we cover kosher food and living in a Jewish area. We talk about the curse of praying public and this covers a lot of ground really comes a lot of ground in the show and then And then the story I keep finished. The story has a continuation because of how Im- reacted and then what we went off did something together which I don't want to spoil because that's the narrative But it's a pretty funny chairman. I it really is. I'm super proud of it. So you say I did. This show could street Lennox. It was aimed at a Jewish audience. All Jews knock. He's also dogs. Reform Perform Conservative unaffiliated. But Still Jews and I think it's a really. I really wanted to do something. Everyone could cutting joy That would be in a language WIGGs. Everyone can understand but the is serious does not scrimp on the jokes atone. It's the funniest show of ever done this by miles miles because I've already but still called the serious stuff when we do discuss antisemitism and there are some real takeaways well foam it excellent zone. The New Amsterdam Theater

"Edward hated theater like really hated it but he loved anthea when it was her turn to choose the location of their next date. She said they were going to see a Latin so he went. He had to admit the new Amsterdam campus beautiful all read gold and classical murals. She'd gotten them front row mezzanine tickets so it was a great view but he couldn't help feel a little unsteady as they walked down the steps to their seats. He was reading the playbill. When anthea decided it would be better to buy her merch rich? Now skip the line at intermission. He wanted to point out that it would be marked up but he bit his tongue. This was her night. Don't let her out to the aisle as he settled back into a seat he felt a tap on his shoulder. A woman was standing there in in a slinky green dress her vintage headdress. Made your look like some strange bird. He stood up to get out of her way leaning against against the balcony railing but she only smiled at him asking if he was excited for the show he tried to muster up a half-hearted yes she laughed whimsically she always dragged her husband.
