"It's coming up my own. Y'all know I love some good champagne. And a good true crime drama and my latest obsession besides the champagne is the girl from plainville. The Hulu series is inspired by the texting suicide case. Francesca spoke to Elle Fanning about taking on the emotional role. Ma'am, who are you wearing? You know, I'm actually wearing vintage. It's yeah, from shrimpton couture and from 1987 givenchy. We should be like Romeo and Juliet. I'd love to be your Juliet. But you do know what happens in the end. He did a wonderful portrayal. This is a very serious topic, you know, your boyfriend, he commits suicide. The character that you played, how do you prepare for something so deep, so dark, so passionate. Yeah, I think, you know, this story is very intense and I think all of us that were involved wanted to make sure that we handled the story with as much sensitivity and we really felt the weight of that responsibility, especially knowing that, you know, these families are still alive and then and also Conrad's, you know, his life was lost. And so every day we kind of carried that with us, but we, you know, we hope that this show kind of shows an unbiased point of view. I keep finding things out about him. It's like I didn't even know him. Tell me about your character. I mean, you are now a new mom. You just had a son in May 2020. Did this change your entire perspective about how helicopter mom you're gonna be on his text messages and who his friends are. You did actually at my plate in a lot of moms throughout my career but having a son now the material really resonated in a different way and yeah, I mean I'm nervous about the future and what new technologies will advance by the time he's a teenager. Who knows, you know? I mean everything's rapidly changing and I hope to just like, you know, give him a strong base and learn how to read the signs and hopefully have a relationship. I mean, even Lynn Roy had a wonderful relationship with her son and I mean you never know. So it's really, yeah, we have to look out for our youth..

"It was a project that came to me an idea that was had from the esquire article and the documentary when that came out that UCP and Patrick they got it and had wanted me to play her, but it was a real they had to talk to me a lot. I didn't know if I wanted, I didn't know if it was going to be told in the right way because I think it can be really it could be done really poorly and really without sensitivity and kind of I didn't want to romanticize or sensationalize this case when these people, these families are alive and a young man's life is gone and so it was something I had to deliberate on for a while. I think then talking with everyone and also being able to be a producer, I did feel like, okay, you know, that's an added pressure, but I also had more say in kind of the delicacy of how we would handle this and write the scripts and everything. And I think we all agreed on this. We were all trying to make the same show. Every cast member, you know, everyone behind the scenes, we wanted to show an unbiased kind of perspective and show what the media didn't. I think the media they love to do this, but they really painted it very one dimensionally. And I think with the documentary and the article kind of seeing a different side and it's not a side that's Michelle's side. It's just, it's deeper, it's learning more about Conrad and his backstory and who he was as a person. It's going through lens grief. I think Chloe is she's so phenomenal showing that journey. It's so real of what she's experiencing. And then Michelle, it's such an it's real balance of how to calibrate a character like that because you don't have to agree with what she did or think it's okay, but you have to have an understanding in order to play her. You can't really judge a character. That you're playing because then it's not going to be fleshed out properly. And I think there's a moment where you have to remove yourself from the public figure and just create kind of another being because I never I never spoke with her and we weren't there. We don't know the 100% truth, but so at some point you kind of have to create your own fantasy and their own reality. So what this show is about and the blurred lines between that, especially with technology. So it was a real real challenge. And I mean, I had two weeks between the great and plainville. Oh my God,.

"And that means that there's a lot of stuff that is dependent on the actors that is not dialog. Had you ever had to lean so much on other things or just communicating in other ways? Was that daunting? Was that fun? Yeah, I'd never, yeah, I definitely never have done a script, like that was, it really was, like, 47 pages. It was like so thin. And it would be, you know, it would be like Johnny sits on the couch smoking and then but then when you watch the film like that ends up being a good minute, you know. The whole scenario. So I remember early on though, Sophia, like when she was explaining the part to me, she was like, I want you to be you and it's gonna be loose and we're going to kind of just capture moments and I was free to like, you know, but things were things were written, but like with Chris pontius or like, we're sitting there and like drawing on the guitar and having conversation, that was all like ad libbed and there'd be moments where Cleo like cooking eggs Benedict. It was like, okay, so then we're gonna watch you really cook eggs Benedict actually from start to finish. I'm like, okay, it was just felt like a very, it was such a relaxed, I mean, we were feeling the chateau, I mean, it's so aw, but it did feel like home, like I would go there and I knew all everyone that worked there and she used all the real staff and everyone that really worked at the hotel and we just kind of moved in for those weeks. And it was definitely more free. Probably, maybe one of the freest like, just like, you know, we could kind of create little things on the fly, very flexible. Yeah. Well, so that obviously was so well received..

"Franks says it's also notable that while Carter's story has become known as the texting suicide case, juvenile court judge Lawrence Moniz ultimately rested his decision on the final phone call between Carter and Roy rather than the text that preceded it. Instructing mister Roy to get back in the truck constituted wanton and reckless conduct Moniz said in his verdict. Why assigning blame is a legal gray area. Society tends to want a clear cut explanation for a why a person and particularly a young person would end their own life. That helps explain the national outrage over Carter's actions, says Stephanie Frederick, associate director of the university at buffalo wild Bernie center for bullying abuse prevention. When it comes to cases involving youth suicide, we tend to want to boil them down to one factor that caused the suicide to take place, she says, but it's usually much more complex than that. Carter is guilty verdict highlighted the legal gray area surrounding the idea that words alone can cause a suicide. Critics of the guilty verdict, including the American civil liberties union of Massachusetts, ACLU, expressed concern that Carter's conviction could set a dangerous legal precedent. It could expand criminal culpability to include speech rather than action alone. ACLU legal director Matthew Siegel said in a statement that the verdict imperils free speech and could chill important and worthwhile end of life discussions between loved ones. Carter's verdict has already been referred by prosecutors in the case of in young you, a then 21 year old Boston college student who encouraged her 22 year old boyfriend, Alexander or Tula, to kill himself in 2019. You pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter as part of a plea deal that allowed her to avoid jail time. In the years since Carter's conviction Roy's parents have also been pushing to pass Conrad's law, a proposed bill that would make suicide coercion punishable by up to 5 years in prison in Massachusetts. What does the case mean for how teens communicate digitally? In real life, as in the series, the troubled teens exchanged thousands of texts and Facebook messages without their parents knowledge, and these messages became part of the court case. To Franks, this deluge of digital communication was a large part of why the case was so controversial and compelling. There's a sense that there was panic over a generational divide, she says, a lot of the older generation seemed to be particularly alarmed over the idea that texting and technology could be such powerful weapons. It also underscores the importance of getting young people to consider the implications of what they say over texts and online, especially as the popularity of digital communication among teens rises. The pandemic had a particularly startling impact on teens use of texting and electronic devices. In 2020, statista reported that texting was the preferred method of virtual communication for over 80% of teens in the U.S. and teens use of electronic devices had doubled since the start of the pandemic. Frederick says that it's the responsibility of parents and other trusted adults to talk to young people from an early age about what they say online and stress that things they say digitally hold just as much weight as things they say to someone's face. Unlike how we see Carter react and the girl from plainville, teens should also know how to appropriately respond if a friend or Peter expresses a desire to harm themselves or end their own life. There's not as much adult supervision in most of these digital spaces Frederick says. So we need to be able to say, here's what you should do if you have a friend who is experiencing mental health difficulties and is.
