NFL Draft Rumors: Picks for the Raiders, Jets, and Giants

"Now. Let's get into the raiders because they are very very interesting. They've sent everybody away. It's like, it's like survivor. There's two guys on an island. You got Mayock. You got Gruden no one else is around anywhere near the organization right now. And I read something that they said for fear that you know, they're big plan. Could get thrown to the wolves. What what possibly could this dynamic huge groundbreaking attempt. Be for the Oakland Raiders got insane. As we heard everyone connected to them literally Quinton Williams Devon why at Oliver and now. The most recent name is to Wayne Haskins. Now, I know a lot of raiders spans laugh at thought of that. But this is where it gets really interesting division in Oakland right now is that there are coaches there that really liked main Haskins. They're also coaches there that are not sold their car is the future. So is Oakland sitting there four knowing that Wayne Haskins might fall into their lap or hoping he falls into their lap. There's a lot of rumors about that right now. Or are they trying to play someone to train up with the jets to Oakland gift Quinton Williams? That's kind of where I'm weaning right now. I do think they want the jets to get out of that pick in fear that if they don't the general take when Williams and that's been there guy all along. This is a team that needs stars on the defensive line because they traded Khalil Mack. They don't have any. I know they use a lot of picks Matt area last year. I think Mary's hers could be an okay player. PJ hall hasn't shown anything yet right now. So Oakland all options are on the table for them right now. And it's very very interesting. All right. So if Haskins goes three and Williams. Does four Naida Tampa at five with Devon white. And Josh Allen still on the board. I think it would be I think Todd Bowles, I know Todd Bowles pick their and Lee here when he was in New York that was Todd Bowles spic you want speed at linebacker. He wants leadership at linebacker Tampa has loved Devon white for months now. I think if he's sitting there at five they would celebrate with happiness that they didn't have to move to get him. So you were telling me now that the way we just went through the MacIntosh of the first five picks. There's a legitimate chance that my New York football giants are landing maybe an elite talent edge rusher. Sixth overall in Josh Allen. I wouldn't rule it out at all. I would not rule that out at all. They get the guy who originally originally from jersey. Now, the interesting thing was the giants here. I have a belief that they've Gettleman has done a really nice job for once here with the smokescreens. And that the giants wanna quarterback at six as much as we keep hearing. They are content taking one at seventeen there's not even the guaranteed that. There will be one is seventeen. I don't see how team can take that kind of risk. So who? Do you think he likes because you know, I'm based out of New York, and we try to break down the code every day. And we just we have no idea of what's going on half the time. Do you look at him and say he likes Jones, we've heard that lock. We've heard that everyone seems to be opposed. The fact that Dwayne Haskins if someone who's interested in then lately for the rumor keyed up and maybe Josh Rosen lands to the New York Giants at some point. Yeah. There's a lot of sect year. I think they, you know, obviously, Daniel Jones there was a lot of smoke around them taking him at seventeen.

"You know, I know they played the charge. Kind of close last week out there. But I think Paul through the former defense coordinator of the Bengals knows that knows how to play this Bengal offense. Really? Well, I think the raiders are can can really build off of that win against Pittsburgh was a big win for them. I think they'll be able to throw the football against his bad secondary. I think they'll be able to tax them. It's not going to be it's like playing on neutral field. I don't think Bengal fans, I think Bengal fans are gonna be out shopping. I don't think they're going to be there really passionate about the game. I don't think they're having trouble with the snap count. I don't think you're going to have any trouble whatsoever. So I think they keep the momentum going I I don't like the Bengals team. I think the Bengals team has kind of meld it in. They don't have enough weapons offensively. And you know, the raiders are going to have to handle Joe mixing. There's no doubt about that. But for the most part when you just really studied this Cincinnati team. The defense is not very good. They struggle. And I just think to me, you know, other than that five point loss. They had against the chargers. I mean, they've got beat double digits at home by the brought by the. Towns and the Broncos. So I like the raiders here. I especially if I'm getting points. I mean, why not take the raiders and get point seriously yet on this? I mean, they barely look when you really go back and look at them since they beat Miami by ten points. They lose at home to Pittsburgh. They get blown out in Kansas City by thirty five. They barely get a win against Tampa headed lead against Tampa Tampa comeback. New Orleans puts beats them by thirty seven the Braves at home beat them by three they go to the Cleveland beats them at home by fifteen Denver Beatson by fourteen. Then they go out they actually play better on the road than I do at home. And the interesting part to me about this whole game as the raiders start to win these games late in the year. And now people are getting upset because they may hurt their draft stock, and I may hit hurt some of their picks and same thing when you see the Cowboys won games, you know, raiders fans are upset about that. Because her some of their positioning when it comes to draft picks is that something that Gruden and these guys are thinking about I mean, obviously marriage MacKenzie is out at this point. So it is the Jon Gruden show officially, but is he worried about some of these games are as he just try. To win games. The prove that he knows what he's doing here in Oakland. I think that I don't think the NFL teams, really. I mean, first of all you can't think about taking. Yeah. This you're going to have a top ten pick. Right. So look, I mean, we all make mistakes and a top five pack of the draft. So you might get just a good player at eight as you get it to you know, what I'm saying once myth. Yeah. Yeah. There's no like oh my gosh. I'm Nina looked Bradley Chubb went six right or what did he go last year? Like, I think you just gotta play. And I think the fact that John's in control the organization and everybody knows that I think they're all play. It is an interesting situation that defense PJ hall some of these other guys are stepping up. So and talk about Paul Guenther going back. Punters revenge there in Cincinnati..

"So the defense to be honest doesn't have anything to really get excited about. And I'm sorry. This is a boring podcast because the team is fun to watch. And they're not very good. In fact, this might not even be very long podcast because there's a ton to talk about because there isn't a lot of town. On this team. But for me on defense, the raiders have two or three players. I like, obviously, the rookie MAURICE Hurst. He's been playing outstanding football in the interior loved what I've seen from him. So far Jonathan hankins the other raiders defensive tackle had a slow start. But he's kinda ramped back up, but he's still becoming a tough nosed run-defender. So the interior that defensive line is pretty good. Not great. But they're pretty good at least has some potential with Marie. I the PJ hall pick though that everybody was crazy about because he looked so good preseason has not worked out PJ hall hasn't look great. Now, the third guy that have been oppressed. With is the former Panthers corner Dera Worley now the charter didn't see Worley in week five he signed with the raiders in the off season, but he had a services spending. So he's only started the last three games. But in those games, he's record nineteen tackle. Nls four. Pass defense an interception, which you got against the Seahawks. Even though it's a small sample size three games a lot. But Darryl Worley sits atop the league right now in disrupted dropbacks, which is the percentage of passing down with a sack interception pass deflections or defense. So Darryl Worley making the most of his playing time so far. So when week five Philip rivers threw for three hundred thirty nine yards two touchdowns. One at tight end Virgil green, the other two awesome Eker that he just took off and broke for forty plus yards. Keenan Allen eight up the middle of the field because the raiders linebackers are a very poor unit, though, one guy that I think has outplayed his draft stock as the linebacker Marquel? Lee is the fifth round pick. He's probably the best linebacker that group right now if he asked me I've been oppressed with him so far, but obviously not part of my two or three players that I liked on that defense but Markelle lease got some talent for sure q now lead the chargers. Receiving he had ninety yards that day Tyra Williams and Melvin Gordon each had sixty yards receiving and chargers, basically dominated all phases. Now, Caleb Sturgis. Of course missed field goal. He missed an extra point. And I was the real low light of that game. But never really played a factor. So it didn't really matter. Now, they're kicker crane. Also missed the kick butt Sturgis. Of course, missed one more mccranie did both of them unemployed at the moment. And the chargers now have Michael badgley? So that's the minor turnover on the charter side talked about turnover with the raiders there's a small turnover. Michael badgley kicking this week there returner? Dwayne Harris is a good kick returner. But he only returned one punt for two yards week five. He had two kickoff returns for twenty two yards. Each return teams did their jobs, and we five now the big question is how's Michael badgley? Gonna do on kickoffs. Because that was a major knock on him. He was putting a lot of the balls at the goal line. Or inside the five didn't get a lot of touch Bax. There are a lot of returns into an Harris is a dangerous returner. So special teams is something we're gonna have to watch on Sunday. I know everybody's gonna be watching badgley. Not only because of the field goals hoping that the chargers are finally rid of this kicker curse that they've had for last few seasons. But kick will be another thing we'll have to watch closely because if he's not getting it in the end zone, and there's gonna be a lot more returns..

"It it set up. This is what you've been dealing with all season long. You'd be great if you were ten games up, he didn't have to worry about any of this, but if you had to be in a fight, this other findings. Good. It's like going and working on in gem. You know, if you start using weights that are pushing to your MAC, you never gonna build muscle. You got to be pushed. And so it's good for us to get pushing this way because we weren't pushed season ago and maybe. Those situations that we found ourselves in a postseason particular during the World Series may have been a little less stressful if we had to work a little bit harder to get there. But because it was easy, not the games are easy, but we have such a huge cushion. That pressure wasn't really there. I like the fact that they are being able to not only hit home runs, but manufacturer runs at the same that three dogs last night, three to jock Peterson at one by month's eaten. I think when you when you look at given your pitcher, that type of cushion, it just relax it. You know, you pitched it. It relaxes them from any or catching right. You know in in is a pitcher catcher. So the dodgers or a really good team, the studio, good news too. As the positions you guys. I was a pitcher, the dodgers. Are that t. Can come in and get into a series and beat anybody. You're not one of the best teams in baseball. This year. They're just not their record tells you that they're not, but what they are, they're, they're could, but they're not the Astros. They're not the Red Sox. They're not the as they're not one of these teams, but what they are is a team that the way that they hit home runs and the fact that their starting pitching is as good as it is you go into best to seven. I can have two or three games where I get my my one or two or zero, but the other game, if I get my internet and I'm going to win because the dodgers be hot team, meaning that all of a sudden, you know the last five games of the season plus into the playoffs. They just catch fire because they certainly can. They're good enough to do that just because their record says that they're, you know, what do they have like the seventh best record in major league baseball on one eighty three games behind Chicago, the same in Atlanta and the behind all the division there behind Oakland there behind Houston, Cleveland, Boston's New York. So we're Tanta. Tampa. Yeah, but it is. Patrick. Bottom half of the top ten doesn't mean that they can't catch fire. Right. I mean, you know what? I'm saying? Baseball. You can just remember because they are a good team. Yes. Baseball's the only sport where the team that is the best team, the course of the season is it doesn't do anything. It doesn't mean the thin basketball. The best team usually wins in football. The best team usually usually get users because you heat the baseball. Anybody that's in has almost an equal shot to get to the championship. Yes, and it's because it's too, but but I will. You made a nice little list of all the teams with better records, but only one of those teams that you mentioned action the National League with us. So we don't have to go through all those Oakland's and Houston's. We just gotta go through one of those and maybe the cubs. I'm like our chance. Yeah, no, so do I so do I think they're in a good spot assuming that they get in a half. We're, we're, we're hearing. We're taking some plants, but we're here for exactly hour and a half. Khalil Mack was doing Khalil Mack things last night in Chicago, and Jon Gruden was doing well, Johnny boy things in Oakland. We'll get into it next morning show Keyshawn l z Travis. Now that doesn't make me regret treatment, and we made a trait. There's going to be hindsight fifty fifty all that stuff, but we would love to have him here and I'm not gonna keep rehashing this. I would love to coach him. Love to have buddies not here and you know somebody's got to step up. We gotta keep building our football team. That's what we're gonna do. Hopefully we see more from PJ hall when he gets healthy and hopefully hopefully we proved that in a long-term we did too right. Seventeen..

"Last night, Monday night football, something happened of all the things that happened over the course of Monday night football last night. And I think we learned a lot about both of these teams trajectories at this point, and what's gonna limit them. And it's ironic because on one side the only part of the solution is really the only part of the problem for the other team. What do I mean by that? Exactly. So you've got the Seahawks and the bears that play on Monday night football. And on one side you've seemingly had last night. Russell Wilson and the island of misfit toys because that defense is an absolute mash unit right now, you've got a guy starting at linebacker. That's worried more about impending jail time where everyone shout out to everyone. Michael kendricks got in last night made a play behind the line of scrimmage. You all had your insider trading jokes ready. I mean, it was the swiftness with which Twitter. Unloaded. What had to be just drafts full of those jokes? None of which were original after the first ten seconds of that ready to go. So you had that on one side of the ball. You've gotta Brian Schottenheimer lead offense that seemed to struggle to get any traction going. I think one point last night at something like twelve or thirteen straight passing plays over the course of a couple of Dr just completely abandoned the run until the end of that game, which when they got close as they had. Been but you had a game in which Russell Wilson threw for just his second pick six in his career last night near -ception by album prince amukamara that ultimately put this game on ice. So you had that on one side or Seahawks team that seems so dependent on Russell Wilson who was running for his life majority of the night against that bears defense. And then the other side you had a bears team than in all three phases was the better football team. The only exception being at the quarterback position where Mitchell Trubisky will have a stat line that certainly will still look good. I give that much more to coaching than anything. I saw for Mitch at most points last night. And so with a young quarterback that's not necessarily a revolutionary thought. But for he bears team that looks so ready in these other phases. You could see how frustrating that's gotta be in a very competitive division in one word. They're still probably year away based on the two teams that we know are above them. But the way this bears defense is playing has to be frustrating. Although matinee you would know it listening to him talk because as he assesses the performance last night one thing he seemed very happy with was the way that his young quarterback. Mr. Bisky was able to handle himself. The thing that we're learning in this process is that we're on this next play mentality. And so I'm I'm really proud with how he handled himself from play one until the end of that fourth quarter every time after any play good or bad on that series. Were after the series. He was phenomenal. I mean, his his attitude was great. He didn't he didn't worry about anything. And so that's growth rate there. And that makes me happy to know that that he understands that. Hey, there's gonna be interceptions. And there's better at least we're doing this thing. And we're talking with stretching and let's make them make a good play, and, you know, more so than not we'll make better place first and last Michael junior here on ESPN radio and the ESPN app. Mitch trubisky. Threw two touchdown passes in a game for the first time. And if this is NFL career on Monday both off play action throws. He had two touchdowns on play action throws all of last season. And that to me is coaching. Right. A lot of what we saw last night. Even to the layperson. You could see what Matt Nagy was doing with that offense all the misdirection all of the fly sweeps using the weapons like Taylor Taylor. Gabriel. Like Tariq Cohen who you knew based off the way. Andy Reid used a guy. Like tyreek hill in Kansas City was going to be something of an offense that Matt Nagy was a part of you knew was going to be part of this offense. But to still see it in practice to see all the creativity to see the day one. The Andy Reid football one. Oh, one play the goal line. Read shovel pass that ends up going to Trey Burton for touchdown. You understand that this coaching tree in particular seems adept at grooming. Young quarterbacks Doug Peterson who is getting ready to get his young star quarterback back in Philadelphia. Carson Wentz is cleared for contact likely going to be the starter this weekend. He's a guy who helped weaned Carson Wentz onto the field is rookie season with what short area passes easy read throws stuff that wasn't going to put his quarterback in a compromising situation because last night Mitchell Trubisky when he was put in situations where they even schemed. Open wide open throws down the field. He was overthrowing them. He was inaccurate. And so that led Mitchell Trubisky to kind of echo as coaches thought. Which is he needs to make sure that he's forgetting these bad plays quickly and trying to get over just doing on plays too much. I think it's it's hurt me more than it's helped me so getting overplays and just building on what I did good. And forget about what I did bad and continue to improve and get better. Learn this offense and coach keep saying it is going to be a process we get we want meat it results. But finding ways to win is very important. And we did that tonight. And maybe that's where the focus needs to be. Because this is also a group of coaches, I that should get our trust in developing young quarterbacks. I mean, you look at it going on right now in Kansas City with Patrick Mahomes, albeit an entirely different level because I think everywhere where the bears are talented on offense. And there are a lot of places. I think the chiefs are that much more talented across the board at all those spots. And so it makes sense that the production who also I mean, you've got Andy Reid who is the one of the patriarchs in this, obviously, not this all falls under. I think Mike Holmgren coaching tree and even more. You can always trace it back further. But of this current iteration of newly minted NFL head coaches Andy Reid, the guy that's been weaning everybody through here. And so, of course, that group should be producing more. It's a group that's been together longer across the board. But you Congo's putting together a hell of a group that tandem in the backfield Jordan Howard into Rico and his deadly that offensive line was protecting. Well last night. Mitchell Trubisky wasn't under a tremendous amount of duress during the course of that game. But they also schemed it up for right? He attempted thirty four passes twenty nine travel within ten yards of the line of scrimmage and people are going to say that's an NFL trend to certainly but in the second half four point four yards per attempt twelve of fourteen passing in that time period. This was the plan for Mitchell Trubisky last night. And it's because you're just not trying at this point to make the big mistake. That's still where we're at Mitchell Trubisky, not going to be winning football games for you at this point. Because the other side that defense good night. Every step of the way so far. And I know it's still early but the early returns on Khalil Mack have been nothing short of extraordinary book and McFarland ESPN Monday night football analysts talking about what makes this player. So special is outstanding. He doesn't a different way. He's not just a speed. Maybe like a von Miller. He's a powerful guy. He can do it all in a number one thing. I love about him. He makes his teammates better. They knew Khalil Mack got here. He was going to be a defensive player of the year type guy. Everyone is Chicago has elevated their level down tempo. He's a dominant player that every office coordinator that goes against him has to know where he is. And they have to have a game plan farm first. And last Michael junior here on ESPN radio and the ESPN app and clue MAC miked up last night. Had never heard him talk before has been one of the biggest forces in the NFL since he stepped foot in the league is an all pro at two positions defensive player of the year. Kind of guy hadn't heard him talk show last night. He is what he's the voice of toughness if tough. Got personified and had a voice that made noise. It would be the low gravel of Khalil Mack. A guy who again was active against the quarterback this bears defense in general six sacks last night. Only pressured the quarterback with more than four rushers six times last night six bliss is but when they did three sacks and pressure on five of those dropbox they made it count when it happened Vic Fangio in that defense showing up and showing out and it keeps begging the question. We look at Khalil Mack. And what he's done. We will be doing this all year. This is the John Gruden regret tracker. John do you yet regret the decision to trade Khalil Mack? No. It doesn't make me regret. A we made a trade. There's got to be hindsight. Fifty fifty all that stuff. But we would loved to have him here. I'm not gonna keep rehashing this. I would love to coach them love to hammer. But he's not here. And you know, somebody's got to step up. We gotta keep building our football team. That's what we're gonna do. Hopefully, we see more from PJ hall when he gets healthy. And hopefully, hopefully, we proved that in a long term. We did the right thing. Poor PJ hall, man. What did he do to get lumped into this? You all had your insider trading jokes ready. I mean, it was the swiftness with which Twitter. Unloaded. What had to be just drafts full of those jokes? None of which were original after the first ten seconds of that ready to go. So you had that on one side of the ball. You've got Brian Schottenheimer lead offense that seem to struggle to get any traction going. I think at one point last night at something like twelve or thirteen straight passing plays over the course of a couple of Dr just completely abandoned the run until the end of that game. Which is ironically when they got close as. They had been. Had a game in which Russell Wilson threw for just his second pick six in his career. Last night. Option by Alvin prince amukamara that ultimately put this game on ice. So you had that on one side of Seahawks team that seems so dependent on Russell Wilson who was running for his life majority of the night against that bears defense. And then the other side you had a bears team that in all three phases was the better football team. The only exception being at the quarterback position where Mitchell Trubisky will have a stat line that certainly will still look good. But you I give that much more to coaching than anything. I saw for Mitch at most points last night. And so with a young quarterback that's not necessarily a revolutionary thought. But for he bears team that looks so ready in these other phases. You could see how frustrating that's got to be in a very competitive division in one word, there's still probably a year away based on the two teams that we know we're above them. But the way this bears defense playing has to be frustrating. Although matinee you would know it listening to him talk because as he assesses the performance last night one thing he seemed very happy with was the way that his young quarterback. Mitch Trubisky was able to handle himself. The thing that we're learning in this process is that we're on this next play mentality. And so I'm I'm really proud with how he handled himself from play one until the end of that fourth quarter every time after any play good or bad on that series. We're after the series. He was phenomenal. I mean, his his attitude was great. He didn't worry about anything. And so that's growth rate there. And that makes me happy to know that that he understands that. Hey, there's gonna be interceptions and there's been better. At least we're doing this thing. And we're talking with stretching and let's make them make a good play. And and more so than not we'll make better place first and last Michael junior here on ESPN radio and the ESPN app. Mitch trubisky. Threw two touchdown passes in a game for the first time in his NFL career on Monday both off play action throws. Read shovel pass that ends up going to trade Burton for a touchdown. You understand that this coaching tree in particular seems adept at grooming. Young quarterbacks Doug Peterson who is getting ready to get his young star quarterback back in Philadelphia. Carson Wentz is cleared for contact like they're going to be the starter this weekend. And so that led Mitchell Trubisky to kind of echo was coaches thought. Which is he needs to make sure that he's forgetting these bad plays quickly and trying to get over just Dolly on plays too much. I think it's it's hurting me more than it tells me so again overplays and just building on what I did good. And forget about what I did bad and continue to improve and get better and learn this offense and coach keeps saying it is going to be a process we we want media results, but finding ways to win is very important. And we did that tonight. And maybe that's where the focus needs to be. Because this is also a group of coaches, I ate that should get our trust in developing young quarterbacks. I mean, you look at it going on right now in Kansas City with Patrick Mahomes, albeit an entirely different level because I think everywhere where the bears are talented on offense. And there are a lot of places. I think the chiefs are that much more talented across the board at all those spots. And so it makes sense that the production who also I mean, you've got Andy Reid who is the one of the patriarchs. And that's obviously, not you know, this all falls under. I think the Mike Holmgren coaching tree. And even more you can always trace it back further. But of this current iteration of newly minted NFL head coaches, Andy Reed's, the guy that's been weaning everybody through here. And so, of course, that group should be producing more. It's a group that's been together longer across the board. But you cargo is putting together a hell of a group that tandem in the backfield. Jordan Howard into Rico is deadly that offensive line was protecting. Well last night. Mitchell Trubisky wasn't under a tremendous amount of duress during the course of that game. But they also schemed it up form, right? He tempted thirty four passes twenty nine travel within ten yards of the line of scrimmage and people were going to say that's an NFL trend, certainly. But in the second half four point four yards per attempt twelve of fourteen passing in that time period. This was the plan for Mitchell Trubisky last night. And it's because you're just not trying at this point to make the big mistake. That's still where we're at Mitchell Trubisky, not going to be winning football games for you at this point. Because on the other side that defense good night. Every step of the way so far. And I know it's still early but the early returns on Khalil Mack have been nothing. Short of extraordinary book MacFarlane ESPN, Monday night football analysts talking about what makes this player. So special Khalil Mack is outstanding. He doesn't a different way. He's not just a speed. Maybe like a von Miller. He's a power guy. He can do it all and the number one thing I love about him. He makes his teammates better. They knew Khalil Mack got here. He was going to be a defensive player of the year type guy. Everyone is Chicago has elevated their level temple. He's a dominant player that every office coordinator that goes against him has to know where he is. And they have to have a game plan farm first. And last Michael junior here on ESPN radio and the ESPN app and clue MAC miked up last night. Had never heard him talk before has been one of the biggest forces in the NFL since he stepped foot in the league. There's an all pro at two positions defensive player of the year kind of guy hadn't heard him talk to last night. He is what he's the voice of toughness if tough. Got personified and had a voice that made noise. It would be the low gravel of Khalil Mack. A guy who again was active against the quarterback this bears defense in general six sacks last night. Only pressured the quarterback with more than four rushers six times last night six bliss when they did three sacks and pressure on five of those dropbox they made it count when it happened Vic Fangio in that defense showing up and showing out and it keeps begging the question. When we look at Khalil Mack. And what he's done we will be doing this all year. This is the John Gruden regret tracker, John. Do you regret the decision to trade Khalil Mack? No. It doesn't make me regret. We made a trade. There's going to be hindsight. Fifty fifty all that stuff. But we would love to have him here. And I'm not gonna keep rehashing this. I would have loved to have coached him loved her. Like, you're asking PJ hall to be the rebound off that. Off Khalil Mack. PJ halls. Gotta be waking up this morning. Like really you had to put me side by side with that guy. You and your fifty fifty hindsight John so Jon Gruden still on the tracker still not regretting that trade right now, we'll keep you guys posted on the update levels of regret as the season progresses and the raiders have to watch their bay. Go ahead on the other side and keep doing big things with their new girlfriend. They look real happy there Instagram picture Coolmax, not even putting filters on these Instagram's with his new girlfriend. It's appalling the level of disdain for John gruden's feelings that gloom ACA showing right now. But that's where we're at a dominant performance by that bears defense a solid win for bears team that we're going to watch with great interest to see if they can bring their gun quarterback a long enough to let the rest of his team having impact because the rest of the team looks ready coming up next. We'll tell you why this all works because it's the patriots. And if dad rant that I will surely never forget, it's all Mexicans first and last here on ESPN radio and the ESPN app..

"Dean tweets in question of the day for you, we'll Jon Gruden willfully admitted mistake. Khalil Mack goes on and wins defensive player of the year. Let's go alive tracker of our Jon Gruden regret tracker here on first and last John questions about regretting the Khalil Mack trade. Now that doesn't make me regret in a. We made a trait. There's gonna be hindsight fifty fifty all that stuff, but we would love to have him here and I'm not gonna keep rehashing this. I would love to coach him. Love to have buddies not here. You know, somebody's gotta step up. We gotta keep building our football team. That's what we're gonna do. Hopefully, we see more from PJ hall when he gets healthy and hopefully hopefully we proved that in a long-term we did the right thing. I just see John looking off in the distance like misty eyed, poor PJ PJ hall has to be the one that gets mentioned as the replacement level for Khalil Mack. Put that on that poor guy just because that was the name you pull out of the hat for the press conference seems cruel and unusual. So they were our live tracker of John gruden's regret or lack thereof so far in the season, and this is the beauty of the patriots move. Now what they did because there's no room for regret in this because they can't be wrong. So Josh Gordon, as we all heard the other day announce by the Cleveland Browns that they'd be releasing Josh Gordon. He aggravated a hamstring injury at a promotional shoot. That was not team related. And for the Browns that ended up being sort of last straw scenario. We talked to Adam Schefter on golick and wingo yesterday said it was sort of the final bit of what had been a long process involving the Browns, trying to put Josh Gordon in the best position exceed a process that ended with according reported by Ian Rapoport. Originally, the patriots are sending a fifth round pick to Cleveland in exchange for Josh Gordon, who if he isn't active for ten games will then net the patriots late round, pick from the Browns. So obviously built in conditions to protect them. If Josh Gordon is not successful in this trip to New England, and that's just it. This is a complete upside play on the part of New England, a New England offense. The right now is still down Julian. That'll men for another two games, a New England offense that against Jacksonville did not look to be fully itself OB. Against one of the better defenses in the NFL. But one that we know on its best day had a game-breaker the likes of which the league never seen in Randy moss back when this offense and Tom Brady were having their banner years and usually never has this dynamic of a weapon athletically in their arsenal on that offense. So on the off chance, it hits great, the patriots give back something they haven't had since Randy moss and if it doesn't hit great, they're still the patriots and Tom Brady still make some guy. You've never heard of look like a star. Our own field Yates filling in yesterday on Spain and fits here on ESPN radio, six to nine PM eastern Monday through Friday said it is nothing short of brilliant..

"Like that. Bears. Get the victory their first win against Seattle since two thousand nine they lost the previous four meetings twenty four seventeen the final in the Monday night game. Khalil Mack new to the bears after being traded by the raiders Oakland. Coach Jon Gruden incidentally, Owen to since trading MAC away. Now that doesn't make me regret. In a we made a trade. There's gotta be hindsight. Fifty fifty all that stuff. But we would loved to have have him here. Keep rehashing this. I would love to have coached him love her. But he's not here. And you know, somebody's got to step up. We gotta keep building our football team. That's what we're gonna do. Hopefully, we see more from PJ hall when he gets healthy. And hopefully, hopefully, we proved that in a long term, we did the right thing. Sportscenter allnight, ESPN radio and the ESPN app. Speaking of trading players Browns making it clear over the weekend. The Josh Gordon would be shown the door in Cleveland in the end the Browns are able to find a trade partner. Gordon going to the patriots in exchange for a fifth round pick Cleveland coach, hue Jackson. Got the best deal that he could get he's gone now we've got to move on and coach team here and get ourselves ready to play Thursday night. Again, we've done all we can do for Josh. And again, I I just stay thank being gimme Adam for doing everything that they could you know, we tried to create the right environment, just a workout. Sometimes I just doesn't work out. Sometimes you just need a different change of scenery. Hopefully, things work out. The Josh I'm glad that there's closure probably say, let's just say it that way. I'm glad that we're now in a in a space where we're not thinking of those things what could be what could not be in that we're coaching the guys that are here and trying to get these guys the play at a high level win football games. Josh, Gordon is of course, been the subject of NFL suspensions for a good chunk of his NFL. Career took a leave of absence to battle substance abuse before playing Cleveland season opener Browns decided to cut ties with him. But he reported to the team Saturday with a hamstring injury. After practicing all week now. Hell the however it could be another offensive weapon. At Tom Brady's disposal. Hate to make projections and expectations. That's not fair. I've never met. Josh personally. Just like I have met some of the guys that have come in the last couple of weeks. So we'll see how it goes this week. Hopefully, he can work hard with the team. I and end up helping us in any role that he could find himself on the team. I always think trust is whatever receivers out there. You know, you tell them to run a survey, and they run it the way that you talked about it, you know, the balls thrown it's caught positive play. And then you do it again. You know, if it's a flip of the coin and fifty fifty sometimes it's right sometimes it's wrong. I mean, nobody can really depend on that coaches. Don't want to see that the players. Don't wanna see that you want to know that the guys are lining up next to that. They got it. They got their responsibility taken care of. And that frees you up to think about what your responsibilities, but if you're worried about this guy that guard this or that, you know, it just takes away from what your focus needs to be as an individual. So everybody wants good teammates that can focus on as an individual. What they have to do in order to help the team Tom Brady with Jim. On the Westwood One. Monday night football pregame speaking of quarterbacks Carson Wentz. He is going to be making his season debut. The eagles quarterback cleared. The place has coach Doug Peterson gonna be maybe an issue or to just gonna take some time to get back into the rhythm of the flow the game the speed of the game is different than the speed practice. And so we do everything we can to try to simulate that during the week. And and try to compare him that way, and listen, he's a guy that will be totally prepared. He comes in early. Studies a tape as do all the quarterbacks stays obviously late in the day. A lot of questions has lot of ideas. You know? So he's he's gonna be he's going to be prepared mentally now. It's just a matter of the physical partaking scared. I'm not gonna coach paranoid. I'm not gonna go in thinking. Oh, no. We can't do this. We can't do that. We just.

"Council. Yup. On KCBS, this is why Cole butcher dog park in San Jose. Which is a need of an upgrade terrorists. Getting more. Now. Let's talk on the case CVS sportsline with Kevin the rats are looking at the raiders this weekend. Well, they're banged up at defensive tackle rookie. PJ hall will miss Sunday's game against Denver with an ankle injury fellow starter. Justin Ellis put on I r this week with a foot injury. So the raiders thin at tackle with rookie. Mar Maria Hurst, the only player who was with the team before this week the raiders signed veterans Jonathan hankins and Clinton McDonald this week and expect and replay a role at Denver kickoff, by the way, one twenty-five Sunday afternoon here on KCBS. Meanwhile, the forty Niners banged up as well. As it gets set to host Detroit guard, Joshua Garnett. Our the toe injury guard Mike person questionable with a sore foot, so rookie nausea, Tehran could get the start Sunday against the lions Markey's Goodwin. The wide receiver out with a quad rookie Dante Pettis will start at that position. Pettus made a great play and a TD catch filling in for Goodwin in week one. It seems like the U dub star was not overwhelmed this week. I think that experience should help. And I I think pedestal benefit a lot from it. And I think he's a guy who the game isn't too big for. I think he's very relaxed. He's very confident being himself. All the time. So is okay with this cat celebration. Doesn't bother him. He he is who he is. And he goes out to that first game. And I don't think it was too big for him. But I think he did see how quickly things can change Kyle Shanahan on Dante Pettis who had to catch it for sixty one yards including a beautiful twenty two yard TD grabbing the back of the end zone on a scramble play Minnesota baseball. "Where you calling on that last drive? I mean, you gotta just under two minutes. A little more tax. Just forty. Yeah. A little little conserve Doug absurd. I hang up on a bit of a connection issue. But I wanted to get your point. So yeah, I do I love that. How conservative the bears were Matt Nagy the new head coach was the offensive coordinator. No. I didn't love it. And I think one of the guys made the point on the broadcast, and I think it was right on. I think it was. I think it told you less about Nagy's. Guts and more about his view of Mitchell Trubisky, and where he thinks Trubisky is at how do you trust your Trubisky? There was a there was a second and ten or second long play where it seemed like if he trusts his quarterback. He would go for it. And that's before the Rajabhai before the Rogers Randall Cobb, Dr Anne, and he just ran the ball ran the ball. So yeah, I didn't love they were conservative certainly after the Packers took the lead. I also think it told you something about their view of where Trubisky is at Trubisky wasn't bad yesterday. But he wasn't astounding either. And there were a couple of times where the bears quarterback missed open receivers. There was a I wish I could rather I think it was to the left. There was basically a play where he had a he had his running. I think it was Howard was still out there during our it might have been Cohen was out there. And he's said to throw it over the defender, and he just skied it. He could Trubisky at times nerves or whatever it was wasn't able to complete. Beat passes to open receivers. He certainly was gonna struggle. I think with the Packers pressure on him. What was going on? So I I didn't love Nagy's play calling. I also think it tells you something about they're going to try to break down and rebuild Mitchell Trubisky. Everything that happened last year they're starting from scratch, and that's the Andy Reid way. And that's where you come from. Andy Reid actually, change Mahomed Patrick Mahomes throwing motion little bit and they had a pretty pared-down offense yesterday for Kansas City because they're going to build them up. Slowly, it's what redoes it's what they're gonna do in. Chicago is think they didn't probably expect to be in that position Peden Syracuse. Thanks for listening to buddy, you're on CBS sports radio. Hey, what's up, brother? Oh, I just wanna talk about quilt. Macro quick huge Oakland raider fan been that way since eighty eight not. I mean, I think John gruden's always is a genius. I mean, the only thing we're gonna mess with Quayle maxes forty sacks. But the thing we have to remember is. I mean, you're going to get some sunshine Kaiser quarterback Aaron Rodgers now. I know that the bears wanted to limited snap count on defense. They kind of did that. But he was he disappeared. And that was an Aaron Rodgers the last quarter. Green bay. Is is that. Yes, great. Chicago did boost who's their defense up with the coil max signing, but I do believe that Chicago is still dumpster fire on defense that offense not the only way that this guy. Go bears team is actually going to do anything that the NFC north completely crafts out and Minnesota Vikings and Detroit Lions I think are a better team Chicago Bears. However with open coming up tonight against the Los Angeles. Rams. I think we have lots of see with mo- Hearst PJ hall and RT who is not starting today. But if Jon Gruden does believe in this defense, and you know, I think we can get things rolling on offense. I think that Oakland has a good chance of, you know, not only just destroying the odds against Vegas. But you know, showing the NFL that they are they actually are contender. And they can, you know, go back to the Jon Gruden ways. I mean when we're going to agree to disagree about it. And I love the call. I I gotta. I got address the the Cleal MAC thing MAC was supposed to play twenty five possessions yesterday that was limitation where they thought he was at in terms of his conditioning. And he was so good. Once he got out there. They let him out there. I think I mean the bears defense was not a dumpster fire last year. It was a top ten defense in the National Football League. In depends on the stats. Some people would argue the more saber magically inclined would argue more of a top five or six events. And that was with an offense. That was brutal. And that left him on the field. All the time. I think you're gonna see a bears offense this dynamic and incredible. And I think going up against Aaron Rodgers what you saw was just Aaron Rodgers excellence. But I love the call, man. I don't see what you're seeing from the raiders. But if I'm wrong, I will own it throughout the course of the year in large part because that's what we do here in large part because to her Kovacs will make sure it's so as a raiders fan who comes in every day, and it's just angry at the universe. "It was wait. I have it right here. I wrote the headline. It was no. Yup. How an NFL defense is built if Gunther had the choice between a breakout season for Gary and Conley the cornerback or MAURICE Hurst the defensive tackle, who would he pick both position seem essential in gutters event. So I, I guess just in theory, Andy, if he could have a superstar cornerback a young guy emerges reserve cornerback or young guy emerged as a superstar defensive tackle. Which which would prefer if you gave him the truth serum? Well, his so the, here's the, here's the case for both. His base defense is baseline approach is too deep zone coverage, but we'll save these back if they don't play exceptionally deep, but they're there to safeties back. Split safety coverage. A call that when you do that, your nickel or nine, your three technique defensive tackle. Lines up between the guard the tackle, he usually gets double team by the nature of the rest of alignments. It usually leaves two guys on them, so you need a big time, three technique to offset that. That's why they pay Gino Atkins all that money and Cincinnati. They got what they needed in him. So that's the case. But then when Gunther goes into some packages, he does those AA gap blitzes he'll use that detangle to cover the center, which really controls the protections you really become in in control as defense when you do that. But if you're going to play that way, you got, you need to even if you're not a man to Mandy and they really is not much of a main demand defensive play caller. You still need guys who can win one on one outside in coverage, so you need you need a Garin Conley type. So that's the case for both sides my answers. I think that three techniques the most important spot for them overall and Oakland's case. So they are so weak at cornerback and they've got some other guys at d. line. It's, we don't know how great it is, but like Hester, for example, last year that I think is six. Round pick Trayvon history. He, he flashed at times, they drafted PJ hall earlier rounds issues. They, they have some other guys at defensive tackle. They don't have any other guys at corner. They are very vulnerable there. So if Garin Conley does not have a quality season that teams got almost no chance to festively because you just can't be that weak on the back end. So I would imagine the answer to the questions Conley, but in the conceptual sense, the answer very well might be marines Hearst or whoever they have it the tackle. Yeah, PJ hall is my God out of the way, and I, I wanna know just real quick MAURICE Hurst. I'll look a lot of teams obviously had him off their draft boards because of the heart condition. We certainly hope he has a long career, but a lot of teams said, absolutely not. They couldn't take the risk with him and we'll see what happens going forward here. I was the only guy I saw from the team when I did the Gunther article by the way gun early afternoon with Gunther. And as we were walking out Maria. I was a walk into his car. Whatever was he was doing. So that's the. That's the one player I met when I did this very Paul Guenther article and I'm sure that's what what policy pronounce his name I? Oh, yeah, sure. Yeah. Yeah. Well, I'm sure there's some part of him subconsciously that could sense net. He knew he knew it was a, it was burned into your brain. But yeah, Hearst, obviously a really good prospect, you know, aside from the health stuff, but a lot of teams said, absolutely not..

"I'm not really sure that they did enough to address that oak this year in the draft they spent one two three four five picks on defense and the rest on offense or special teams right i think they should have spent their first round pick on her when james because i don't like the really the way their secondary plays secondary was getting burnt gave after game last year right safety came up with keep up with the deep route players i think jerry james would have been someone who could have helped defense i think they could have also went tremaine edmonds if they weren't going james all right do they need linebacker help but they go off line and for some they were saying that that was a retread there in the first round to get cold miller i'd say was too second round take pj hall defensive tackle at sam houston state third round they take brennan parker offense of talk what north carolina state second pick of the third round they take arden key defensive end outta lsu i actually liked that pick i think it'd be a good player for this team all right fourth fourthround take note nelson cornerback out of wisconsin fifth round they take more is hearst defensive tackle outta michigan he's the one who had the heart condition that's why he felt so much seen as a first round talent but again the first round the heart condition is what drop them so far and it's hard conditioning something where it's not really gonna him and the nfl then i think a very good pick for oakland there but it's just a matter of i mean the guys that you took with your first couple of picks you could have taken better players i think all right but either way like art in kenmore easter's pick and they say johnny townsend punter out of florida has victor inside linebacker at washington and then marcel eightman wide receiver at oklahoma state so i guess my favorite pigs would be.

"All right and there's the oakland raiders we're gonna go from one good to one bat all right the raiders obviously their defense last year was brutal okay terrible is one way to put it and they addressed in this draft but i feel that taking offense of linemen in the first round hurts okay you could have taken derwin james who i feel would have been a bigger help to that team rather than colin miller the offense of wada ucla all right i mean i don't if cole miller works out then it's great but it's like you could have got there when james with the fifteenth pick and you could have just stayed at number ten and took me fits pageant i don't understand taking offense of talk will in the first round when your biggest need is a player and the secondary okay and like i said if bill works out then he works out and there's no problem but it's just a matter of you had bigger needs there all right and they take pj hall defensive tackle at sam houston state i mean again yeah you address the defensive line but you still needed needed reinforcements at the secondary spot and linebacker all right and they still think they could have gone josh jackson at that spot unless the packers before where they were picking unless i mean there were still other corner actually you could have taken you go with another offense lineman around three i mean they should've spent their first three droppings on defense.

"Most part the line of scrimmage they bring in miller to be a tackle they draft pj hall out of sam houston state and i'll tell you this at the level when you dominate the way pj hall did and look at the numbers and watch some of the tape this guy was a killer at that level but that's what you have to do with the fcs level to be a high level top sixty seventy draft pick got dominate this guy was a crusher and a killer pj halls got a motor he's gonna have a little something to prove coming from a smaller school but i i like him a lot i think the guy can play and then they turn around and grab themselves another offense alignment at the top of the third round and then another defensive end in arden key which is pretty good value there in the third round then they slide in a corner then they get a guy that people thought was going to be a big time draft pick this year and mo hurst from michigan and the raiders getting with the third pick of the fifth round so the raiders bring in a couple of offensive linemen and a bunch of defensive lineman that's a good way to go to start to build your football team especially when you have the quarterback that the oakland raiders do derek carr and i'm a big fan of him so what are you know what they did was they brought people in defensively who in theory should be able to get on the field in some way shape or form and if for anything else be the guys that get blocked while khalil mack runs free because to me that's what you're looking to do get people on that line of scrimmage who have the ability to gobble up blockers or to push the pocket so you can let khalil mack turn around and be khalil mack but if you look at what the.

"Not even on their draft board i mean look i i just pop them up really quick to to look at what they pick but it's really it's just philosophical maybe raiders are going to outsmart everybody and they're going to be right it's just you get a little nervous that early even if the kid is has been productive he was productive of sam houston state would he'd been productive at sc would he'd been productive at alabama would i don't know but we're talking about the twenty fifth pick of the second round that guy has to be a starter but if you're in the second and third round those guys have to be starters let me just say one thing on this i think that every year in the nfl team the team that wins the super bowl is studied and analyzed and copied and i think there's going to be the eagles are going to be no different and tepe teams are going look at a couple of different factors with the eagles they went forward a ton on fourth down i think you're gonna see more teams going forward on fourth down next year than ever before because of the eagles that's one two is every single guy on their defensive front can rush the passer you in a pass happy league where you've got people passing all the times and sub packages and and it's just more and more passes every single year you can't have the three hundred fifty pound hasn't rush the passer guy on the field very much you have to have interior guys who can get up the field and and rush the passer that's why pj hall i think has value because now he gives you an interior rush the raiders have the best outside rush man in the game they need to come up with some inside up the field rush not not run stuffer stopper stoppers pj hall will do it he'll get up the field he'll push the pocket and if you're khalil mack you've got to be doing high fives right now because the quarterbacks can be running into your lap one of my biggest issues with their just last three weeks you can't win the super bowl which is much choirboy so that's history of the league you need some edgy guys with some red flags but the last couple of years you know.
