"A delta plane skins off the taxiway at pittsburgh international airport. No injuries reported. This is from the pittsburgh post gazette and for all of you out there. yes. I do fly An airplane very similar to this. One a boeing seven. One seven four A sister airline. And but there. I got a lot of Messages from people. You know kind of worried that could have been me inside this jet but it wasn't wrong airline this delta An airplane carrying nearly eighty passengers and crew slid off the taxiway at pittsburgh international airport on wednesday evening air last week. Airport officials said that. A delta airlines plane a boeing seven flight. Two to three one was departed for atlanta with seventy seven people on board when it quote exited a taxiway just prior to take off near a runway at about six thirty pm. And there's a picture in here of it kind of the nose wheel hanging over the edge of the tax away Officials said that no injuries were reported in the buses were dispatched to help. Passengers exit the plane the passengers were then shuttled to the airside terminal. Delta airlines released the following statement while on. Oh you want me to show that picture. You're saying oh i thought when you alluded to it you're gonna show it but that's okay. No i don't feel like all right okay. Pardon the interruption. When we're recording the show live. The only person who can hear me is captain jeff. Now he's decided to include my audio here in the post. Show edit lucky. You enjoy okay here. Share share screen and here we go and then boom except for do that okay. I'm just gonna leave it like that. Can you guys that no this. They see their got it. Okay for wonder. yeah actually. That picture isn't as bad as some of these others. This one makes it look a little worse and Here's the the back end of the jet details clan thing out the bank. Well rather not say. I don't go seven one. Seven five data a non inflated slide. That comes out of the telecom now. I don't know if you know. This is one of those pictures. Aftermath pictures after the passengers have already left the airplane I did see some pictures. What they had some stairs kind of butted up to get it taken by accident and Up to the back end here and sorry and passengers i keep. I'm really not doing that. The the rear portion of the is the anal portion of the jet They left via the stairs now. I don't know if they if the slide was inflated You know or if it wasn't played in the deflated. Or what. But i've got two things the first one i wonder i wonder if the The the slide The telecomms light there would be effective given the deck angle at the airplanes. Yeah that's that's a good question right. Because i don't think it would be. Maybe it would. I'm not sure what angle it you know. It has to have to be effective dangle dangling banks on the show title about liz you got that angle angle okay and then the other one is I know from from my previous airline. And mike kerner line in the You kind of have to be familiar with with the flight attendant manuals and all that stuff when you carry passengers durant. I know that it's in their manual. That if they well if they find the airplane or in in their in their estimation in a unusual position in the ground or after he rejected takeoff. And they don't hear from the crew in fifteen seconds they're supposed to automatically Beginning evacuation themselves. Because the the the cockpit crew flightdeck crew might be incapacitated and unable to command that evacuation. Yeah so it's you know it's it's it's the manuals as well so Maybe but i mean again again. We don't we don't know an app communication's very important Bring up a great point. And that's why immediately after this happened and you know we're we're just gonna have to like say we're not sure what happened because there's no official officially released Reason that The jet didn't make that final turn. I'm just on this tax away a couple of days before this and On a s airplane and it was in similar conditions as well and let me tell you what you know when the when they do all the snow removal and stuff on the usually do a really good job of of the runway snow removal. And making sure the frictions good and that kind of thing but once you get off on the taxiways and the ramps you gotta be really careful. Because they're usually very very slippery. So i mean i'm very deliberate now. I think we've talked about this. Before that i tend to like to taxi on the higher end of the speed scale But in these listen yeah you But in these conditions. I'm very very slow and deliberate because yeah you know. I'm just not sure what you're going to get and you don't want to end up. I'm not saying this is what happened here but it kind of looks like maybe they were going a little bit too fast for the conditions and tried to make that left. Turn the runways right there. You can see it behind it so it's just like a little bit of a ninety degree turn from the direction this airplanes facing right now and it looks like it just you know. It could have been a mechanical issue as well so i don't know

"Excellent customer service from the professional parts people at around the auto parts I'd have to. Ah, Got to see how the draft plays out a little bit here like I can't imagine they're looking at Mack Jones saying We need Mack Jones. There's no way they're doing that. So their list probably is feeling ready to win like that yet. Well, I don't even I mean, you think that Lance is that Max is ready. I'm just not a Mack Jones guy. I'm not could be dead wrong right now. I'm just you know, I'm not a huge fan. I'm not a huge believer. I'm a fan. I'm not a huge believers a difference, but I can't imagine that they're plotting any move to target Mack Jones, if they are at that would surprise me. I would think that you know in their building their thinking, either. They know that Lauren's going first, they strongly believe it not know Wilson's going to. So to me, it's got to be between fields. And trey lamps in terms of who they really like. Now, if they really like one of them, but are like lukewarm on the other, and I don't know who would be. I don't know the order. No, I wouldn't just blindly move up. Unless I know that that I'm getting some not just gonna move up to move up. I'm gonna move up to and I'll tell you something else. I'll move up and give up more. Then it would take to just move up. As long as I know that I'm getting the guy that I covered. I think what he's saying is, If there's a they'd have the pre prepare pre, like, bake a lot of these deals. You can trade it on draft day. Oh, I know so pre big. Yeah, So if if if my guys there at three or four Let's I'm prepared to give up the farm. Let's let's let's consummate this deal real quick while you're on the clock and let's go. Got it. Got it. All right. There you go. It's gonna be a wild night. It's gonna be awhile. Few days draft should be a lot of fun, and it's coming up. Quick. You ready for the blast? Teach you let's go. Let's go. So many topics so little time We give you five stories in five minutes, But don't take too long or you'll suffer the buzzer. It's time for the blast with TT and Tierney My partner settle a partner pick up, according to The Pittsburgh Post Gazette. The Steelers expected to address their void There is a big void of running battles will vote on the offensive line in the first or second round of next week's draft, although that was refuted by some today, we'll see. I don't think they're picking a running back in first round. That's just me but couldn't store running back. Put the steel There's over the top is the question. Oh, yeah, I mean, definitely, but I think you need do you need to shore up that office of line first? Exactly Right. I mean, if Nagy Harris is there and you if they had done some or in free agency, would it be more interesting for them? Offensive line Wise would be more interesting for them. Just say look at one of these really good running backs Travis ctn or or nausea Harris or gives a couple of these other guys as well. Um, I would say absolutely Thea, North Carolina Kid, definitely one of the North Carolina Devante Williams or Michael Williams before Williams before, agreed. He's bigger. Um But I don't think they're gonna do in the first round. But they do need to upgrade that run game like the one thing that held them back because they were good on the defensive side. They were good.

Thanks for making time. Have fun today. We appreciate it. Well, Dan, Nice chat with you, Gerry Dulac. Hey, covers the Steelers for the Pittsburgh Post Gazette. Michelle, too, for your first hour who was great, said that whether would not be an issue that if they had played this last night, whether would have been an issue, But I think the Ravens running game will be the one issue, the only issue for the Steelers this afternoon. Some phone calls here, Noah in Wisconsin. Hey, know what's on your mind today? Hey there, Dan. First time medium time on. I just want to point out regarding the college football selection process. You pointed out that Texas A and M is unlikely to make it in because of lack of viewership. Interest. Um A few years ago, Clemson was not a marquee team, and now they've risen to blue blood status. I was wondering from a award nominated broadcaster and actor like yourself. Um, how Clem's in or I'm sorry, Texas saying them or dare I say my Wisconsin Badgers could rise to become a marquee team. Well, I think you have to have you know when Johnny Menzel was there, Texas saying, and we wanted to see him. Texas A and M doesn't have that. Well, I want to see that guy. Wisconsin doesn't have Jonathan Taylor. You don't have that guy and it doesn't always come down to it. But I do think it helps with if you have, like Florida has Kyle Trask. Now they're good. But I got a guy who might win the Heisman Trophy here and go back to Clemson A couple of years ago. We didn't know the weapons. Clemson had In fairness to Clemson, we realized the talent that they had. We didn't know if it was on the same level as an L s U. R in Alabama, or some of these are Ohio State, But then we quickly realized it was, but Uh, Clemson, you know, with Trevor Laurence Alabama has marquee guys. Uh, you got next saving you throw in there a lot of this when you think of college athletics. It comes down to coaches. It's weird college basketball was about coaches. It's not about players. You're tuning in its Tom Izzo in Michigan State versus Mike She, Schakowsky and Duke. They're not playing. But you can sell that Rick Pitino. John Calipari. Bill self like you Can. That's how you sell it. College football. It was Urban Meyer. It was Steve Spurrier. It was Nick Saban. Now it's Davos swinging. That goes a long way. It resonates with viewers. For some reason. I want to know how good the football team is. But we assume if the coach is great His team is gonna be great. But Davos, Sweeney and Clemson If Urban Meyer was still in Ohio State, you know, we might look at Ohio State differently than Ryan Day. Yeah. You know, Tex Stamina has a good season. But in early October, they got housed by Alabama on national TV that really every pump the brakes there quarterback is a guy named Kellen, Mont. Who is can be very good. Not consistently enough. And so past couple weeks, they miss games against Tennessee Ole Miss Alice you game, which would have been a prime time big game was not relevant anymore cause l issues way down, So that's that's what kind of hurt them this season. And I have nothing against and I'm getting in there. I'm just telling you what the what The truth is what the reality is. I don't have a rooting interest in this. Couldn't care less. But I just want to be fair to the system and what they see. You know how you what you're factoring in and make no mistake about it. It's a TV show. All else fails. Who's got a bigger fan base. I always feel that that is the deciding factor. If you you have to team if you said Ohio State and A and M Then we can't really decide. Ohio State. And him against Notre Dame, Notre Dame. I mean that Just logic that I think is attached to this. Kyle in Ohio. Hi, Kyle. Hey, Dan. Great show. I just I agree on the college football playoff that, you know, Highest state. I'll listen to the A and M fans. Florida fans on you know if they deserve it, and I will not lessen the Cincinnati fans. No, it was a year ago. 2019 last summer. All we listened to was how they're going to come into Columbus and give a high state all they want and they didn't cross the 50 42 to nothing again. Two different. I get it somewhat two different teams. Not 42 point difference. Yeah, And I understand that, Kyle, I get it. It's just We don't allow any wiggle room for a great story. Thanks for the phone call. When you think about college football. How does the underdog the underdog gets a weekend Appellation state goes into Michigan and winds in the big house and go? Oh my God! North Dakota State takes on a Big 12 Big 10 school and we go. Oh, my God, and that's it. That's their moment. Their March Madness takes place in September or October or November. And that's part of the problem. I have with college football that we don't entertain the possibility of somebody doing something truly unique..

"What the heck is going on at the Pittsburgh Post Gazette. That is our question on this week's reliable sources podcast. Let's cue the music. I'm Brian Stelter, and this is our weekly podcast. Edition of reliable are tends to go in depth, media, leaders and newsmakers talking about how the news gets. And of course, the biggest story in the United States right now is the black lives matter movement Certainly it is intersecting with the coronavirus crisis and other stories, but we have seen this tremendous reckoning d newsrooms across America. About racial injustice about systemic racism, And about a lack of diversity in Vienna Gratien. In newsrooms far and wide Dan Kennedy in Boston tweeted on Friday June twelfth. He said what's happening at the Pittsburgh. Post Gazette is far more important than the recent ouster at the New York Times and affiliate quieter pay attention he said Kennedy was linking to a New York Times story headlined Post Gazette. Staff revolts over the sidelining of two black colleagues. These two journalists said they were kept from covering demonstrations. This is getting to be a bigger story. Each and every day in fact now, the union representing many journalists calling for the top leaders of the Post Gazette to resign. So. Let's talk about it with one of the reporters. WHO's in the middle of IT Alexis Johnson? She's doing me now from Pittsburgh. Alexis thanks for coming on. Brian! Thank you so much for having me I really appreciate. So we are talking here on the morning of Friday June twelve. This story is developing pretty rapidly. so Hope, listener will keep that in mind, but dates back to tweet. I can't put them saying this. Because it's all about tweet you posted, but this dates back to a tweet that you posted almost two weeks ago. Tell us about the tweet. Yeah the tweet that is now kind of embroidered history. Right I mean it's. This tweet of infamy now that happened on May thirty first on the protest in Pittsburgh against the death of George, fluid happened on May thirtieth, which was a Saturday in that Sunday I woke up being. Solve, the conversation was happening about some of the damage that had been done on the protests. And you know I'm very well versed than Internet. I like to say I speak twitter, millennial I grew up on the Internet, so it didn't take long to Kinda just think of this random tweet to post about Kenny Chesney in his fans Kinda the destruction that they bring to the city every single year I'm from Pittsburgh Pittsburgh native. Kind of like a running joke almost or you know it's a thing. Can you test needs fans, and you know he comes in sells out hands field where the steelers play in forty thousand people come and tailgate from sunup to sundown. We've had so much mess in their arrest every year and things like that so I just quickly Google Kenny Chesney photos, and it just happened. Actually. It was coincidentally on the weekend now he was supposed to come to Pittsburgh canceled because of the coronavirus and. I said you know who look at these scenes from these from these looters that don't care about the city. And then I was like Oh. Wait now. These are just Kenny Chesney pigs whoops. tweeted it and kind of went on about my day was. Meant to be this big political statement, it didn't take much thought and I read about it. You know and I I went on about mundane than by the end of that it had. Kind of viral, it has like thirty thousand retweets I think by the end Sunday night, and then by Monday morning I got a call from my. In saying that that they felt like that sweet show bias in that I would no longer be cover the protests or any protests coverage, regarding the black lives matter movement because of that. They say bias against who, or by about what is this note bias against white people or no Kenny Chesney. Yeah! It's like do I. Cover Kenny Chesney and I'm not allowed to speak about Kenny Chesney. Like what exactly is the bias here? You know they. They hearken back to the social media guidelines. That management put out I guess a few years ago, probably before I even started working here in twenty eighteen, but it's not a policy that we have. It's not any type of rules that the guild has signed off on any way you know there's nothing in these guidelines about the Larry Action or protocol or anything like that they kind of just like hey, like be smarter while which are tweeting and don't endorse politicians in things like that. And like you said I pushed back. This wasn't a quick conversation. By any means we spoke for about twenty twenty five minutes and I'm like. Can you please explain to me how this shows bias? What about shows bias and they kind of just said where your opinion comes through in the tweet, because you're comparing lueders to Kenny Chesney concert, goers and I'm like okay, you know, and you know I still don't see what what opinion what side you think. I'm taking here so I can only conclude that it was because I was a black woman and I was speaking on I, involved black lives matter. That was I said to them at that moment. Acid I feel like it's because it's a black issue that she felt like I had this bias and I. Don't think this tweet. It was kind of insulting. Because it's like this whole civil rights, movement is going on, and there's so much I can't say know because of my position. There's so much I was feeling in those moments and seeing that video of George Floyd..
Can black journalists cover the Black Lives Matter movement objectively?
"Is a partisan for the press to say black lives matter news rooms across the country are debating the role that journalists should be playing and particularly when it comes to talking about race in America the twenty sixteen conversation with NPR's code switch then Washington post reporter Wesley Lowery had this to say about the idea of objectivity I don't like the word when we talk about how to be objective we begin the conversation with a lot like we did begin the conversation with the lie that we don't have biases and that we don't receive the welterweights right I strive to be fair and that means I have to interrogate my own biases that fairness means I have to go out of my way to make sure I'm giving a fair critique hearing the people who I know I disagree with journalists at The New York Times revolted over an op ed which many said threatened black lives that same week the Pittsburgh post Gazette barred some of its black reporters from covering the protests over fears that they'd be quote too biased and on the other hand just yesterday the news organization Axios announced that its reporters can participate in protests and that the company fund would cover bail for any employee who is arrested some news rooms across the country appear to be changing fast what could that mean for journalism as a possible to be fair and transparent without being objective I'll tell you this is a conversation that the one eighteen is having a lot and we should note that we reached out to NPR whose standards and guidelines we have bye bye but they declined to take part in the program joining us is Ricardo Sandoval Palos public editor for PBS Ricardo welcome to when I thank you thank you for having me also here is Nicole Hannah Jones reporter for The New York Times magazine covering racial injustice the call welcome back thank you the call start with you in the past couple of weeks past two weeks we've seen several incidents involving newsrooms scrutinizing journalists of color over their inability to be objective here's that word again talk to us about some of those incidents well we saying really three major incidents and and who knows how many others where journalists haven't spoken out about them but we have the case in Pittsburgh and that was where of course to black journalists wonderful one photo journalists want to print journalists were taken off of the beat to be able to cover the protests of the black journalist had posted on social media images of trash everywhere of garbage everywhere and said oh look at you know these looters and then said actually it's it's a Kenny Chesney the end of a Kenny Chesney tail gate and I guess her bosses thought that that was inappropriate to pull her off of the coverage we still have no explanation about why the photo journalist who is also a a black journalists was pulled off of the coverage and then go ahead of well tell me about what happened at your paper the senator Tom cotton's op ed sure so we ran online and op ed written by Tom cotton that was basically calling out for the U. S. military to be imposed on cities and states where the governors did not want that help in order to put down a protest that they felt were violent there was a huge pushback amongst journalists at The New York Times a book of more than a thousand journalists signed a letter put forth by our our our union I'm saying we oppose that in a lot of journalists went and spoke online about it and it was for it was for two reasons one this this editorial did not go through the proper normal fact checking process that any thing that appears in the time should go through but we also felt you we were getting kind of free space to a sitting U. "Eighty well. The guy is certainly been making all kinds of headlines on Wednesday Antonio Brown. If you checked out the mask singer on Wednesday night, he turned out to be the first one revealed. Antonio Brown was the hippo character on the debut show, professionally now the question surrounding him. What will he be worrying season on the field? There were the reports the Brown went off at a team setting during the week last week. Pittsburgh post gazette. I reporting Browns skipped meetings after throwing a football team may nutty wasn't actually injured Wednesday during his year end press conference Steelers coach Mike Tomlin saying Antonio Brown was benched Sunday against Cincinnati after failing to show up for work on Saturday. It was no big deal from that perspective it happens. Some with veteran players, I give them a day off. I worked younger guys. It's not only about their protection and preservation. But it's also about the growth and development of younger guys. So that was not a big deal for us woke up Sunday morning and got a call from his agent. Drew Rosenhaus drool express that he was feeling better. And he would potentially be able to participate outlined drew that decisions were made like that. But I would be interested in visiting with him in person at stadium prior to the game but playing on the menu so drew related to him. I met with AB prior to the game he asked what he can do. I said the best thing he can do in terms of helping us win the game support his teammates. He agreed to do that. And we had a general conversation about his overall health. I send them to the training staff to visit with those guys who were at the stadium ready and people for play. And that was the last conversation that he and I had I haven't spoken with him since that meeting. I had with him prior to the game at the stadium on Sunday. Obviously, I'm going to address it. We're going to address him and the circumstance, but to be quite honest with you, you know, we're going to hear for Mason gathering us all the time at our disposal and wish to do. So I'm not gonna speculate on trays and things of that nature. We haven't formally received their requests in that regard. So I'm not gonna speculate. I'm not going to speculate in terms of where to discipline my go and things of that nature. Just know that is going to be addressed. And it will be addressing needs to be addressed for obvious reasons, you can describe it in whatever ways you want to describe it. But there was a lack of communication there that can lead to thoughts and things of that nature that can go in many directions. The bottom line is that we're playing a significant game. He didn't do a good enough job. Communicating or being available in the hours leading up to that performance. So we needed to make decisions pertinent in prepared to play in that performance. Tomlin citing a lack of communication between Tonio Brown and the team didn't hide from the troubles that Brown has caused over the years. He was asked if he thought Brown at quit on the Steelers. And that was the response where you heard Tom and say, you can describe it in whatever ways you want to describe it the reaction Wednesday from NFL live. Well, first of all hope Mike Tomlin has a great.

"Let's start off today with the latest Antonio Brown. Saga thoughts on Mike Tomlin's comments? While you were driving yesterday as well as in Tonio Brown's social media post. Yeah. Who man? You know, I think the more people I talk to whether it was at bouchette from the Pittsburgh post gazette or today, I talked to a d king Kabbalah from NFL network of people that are there every day. It just seems like this is a really bad situation. And it was made even worse. I thought Bri by Antonio Brown. You know, posting this whatever it was message about, you know, he's gonna live his life, and he's not going to let other people affected his life, blah, blah, blah, whatever that was right. I thought that you know for him to do that. While Tomlin was talking to the media was was surprising to me. I was not expecting that. But that's what he did. It just seems like a really bad situation. I still don't believe that he'll end up getting traded. I just think they're going to realize the window with rothlisburger is small. All two or three more years and that to essentially throw away a year with rothlisburger because twenty one and a half million dollars of dead money from Tonio Brown, and then you have to replace the player. I just don't I just don't see them doing that. I could tell from Mike Tomlin that he's not happy about it. There's clearly some culture issues there some accountability issues there. I think a lot of the responsibility does fall on Mike Tomlin. And they gotta figure out a way. I don't know if you need to be more disciplined. Maybe it's known her ship thing. I don't know. Maybe ownership doesn't wanna doesn't want to suspend the players or whatever. But the Levy on bell and the Big Ben and all being Tonio Brown stuff this year. It's just it's been a lot. I mean to use a Marvin Lewis term it's been a lot. And I truly believe that it affects them on the field. I think they'll end up, you You know. know kissing hugging and making up so to speak. As we get closer to March. But I've been wrong before we'll see. Jeez. Couple of firings from the bills front office..

"He almost sitting credulously to the media's rebound the Pittsburgh post gazette this morning. What do you want me to do not play them? And it is an interesting point. Like, what do you do? When a player is this good is consistently this productive. He's fourteen hundred yards basically every single year. It's tough not to play them it. He had to go to these extent. This extent to not play him. And even then the team was covering up for him. They were calling this a need in dry up until it got out after the game. How does a team reacted us? How does the rest of the your lock remaining I wonder going into Sunday's game? How much the whole team actually knew what was going on. And how they reacted and how he comes back from this. If he financially camping moved how you move on. From this and get back on the same page with both Big Ben and the rest of the team. He's going to have one of those Jesus moments and understand and he can get in front. I mean, the fact that he wasn't even there when the team were were exiting yesterday. He knew was show up yesterday. The fact that Rooney reached out to him turnover olders calls. I mean, I don't know how you come back from this. I mean, sometimes you gotta eat that money is more important for you to have a culture because you know, how do you empower ill Tomlin to be able to discipline everybody when we know the AB has set of rules, and at the end of the day, this thing is if no FAS only one being at three Bs it's time to rebuild and start to think about doing something different in Pittsburgh, anyway, especially looking at the rest of the division San where the ravens are saying where the browser what the Browns are doing. We could be witnessing the end of the Pittsburgh still is on top. We may see more the early cower years as opposed to what we become accustomed to seeing. And build real quick suffering Bill with a quarterback going into your sixteen of quarterback that is not one of these cheap young quarterbacks where you can add a ton of talent. And we're if you do movie Tonio Brown, you know, cap relief from it. But you're in you're in a rough spot. And I listened Tomlin's going to catch a lot of strays on this one understandably, but the guy through the football at is a culture center why because he didn't play him don't run a route well known she's asking why Tomlin's gonna catch. No, I think people understand him not playing. I think people are going to blame Tomlin that that situation could get to this point. Now, I don't know how you control a grown, man. I don't know how VIN Tonio brownie Tomlin again couple years ago when he was asked Tonio in zone celebrations and the penalties. I don't know what you want me to do. Like, what do you want me to do other than not play the guy, and I'm obviously going to play the guy, but culture is set typically by two people in an organization if you're fortunate enough to have two of. These people in the organization and established head coach they have that and a hall of fame quarterback. They have that big bins never been held accountable. And that predates Tomlin that predates Tomlin coming there. Whether it was the whether it was the motorcycle, whether it was the horrifying allegations at the bar, a couple of those whatever whether it was continually throwing teammates on the bus and in coaches onto the bus, and I'm Jerry big Ben's going to say about four and a half hours from now when he does that radio show 'cause I'm sure he'll sound off on this..
Who is eligible to be a US citizen?
"Some of those loopholes are like catch and release some of those some of those loopholes are are in other categories. There are things that human traffickers actually used to entice vulnerable families to make the long and dangerous trip north of the peninsula often at great risk to themselves. And and frankly birthright citizenship is a part of that. And what I think the president's made clear is that we are looking at action. That would reconsider birthright citizenship, we all know what the fourteenth amendment says we all terrorists the language of the fourteenth amendment. But the supreme court of the United States has never ruled on whether or not the language of the fourteenth amendment subject to the jurisdiction thereof applies specifically to people who are in the country. Illegally. And I think the president's looking at executive action under the Congress's looked at legislative action to reconsider that. But but are broad objective. Here is we need to we need to fix a broken immigration system. That that's being used by by people who literally are exploiting vulnerable. People enticing them to make this long journey north to our border in the hopes of coming into our country illegally. And we need to have a system where people know how to come into the United States legally, and that we have a system that's working for the American people first, and that it's working on an orderly way like it did for my grandfather when he came through asylum when he was twenty three years of age from Ireland. We the system isn't working today. Jake and we've got to reform it it pretty drastic action to to do that unilaterally. The president doing the by himself. Well, I'll leave it to the president too. Announced whatever actions, we'll take another president yesterday. Made the decision that we're deploying fifty two hundred troops to our southern border. There's already two thousand national guard there now we're gonna we're gonna have the troops there to support border patrol agents says his caravan continues to make its way north, but also as the crisis of illegal immigration on our southern border continues. But in terms of changes in the law in terms of executive action. I don't want to get ahead of the president. But you can look back at that famous speech in Phoenix that he gave about immigration reform, and he spoke about us taking on this issue and taking on other issues in a way that we can we can have a debate about having an immigration system in America. That's working this working for the American people first, and that includes reexamining this whole issue of birthright citizenship from earlier in the day here in Washington, vice President Mike Pence and join us on the phone is John Wagner, national political reporter for the Washington Post can the president do this. Well, that's been the question of the day. I suppose. An interesting development. Is that house speaker Paul Ryan kind of way down essentially saying, no that this is not something you can do by executive order. Democrats have been pretty United in saying that as well. And among other Republicans there's been a bit of advice, then why is the president doing this? What is this all about? Well, I think it's fair to view it in the context of midterm election being. About a week away. Now, and this is certainly consistent with other things. The president has done to try to put the immigration issue front and center, the White House, really believe. So this is an issue that will drive car out among the president's base. And that's something they feel they truly need to boost their numbers in a number of competitive house district. So that they have a chance of Republicans have a chance of maintaining the house and has this been tested by the courts. Not the precise question. I mean, there have been cases strongly suggesting that the fourteenth amendment does offer. This status to children born in the United States of legal permanent residents. There's a more more of a question, I suppose among those of undocumented immigrants that that question has never been specifically ruled upon van allusions to it in some of the previous rulings. So. Goes it doesn't look like there would be a quick solution. Either. The president would issue the executive order and that would get litigated litigated through the courts. Or if you try to amend the constitution that is obviously a fairly cumbersome process, and in that interview with axes, which will be airing on HBO this weekend. He said, basically, the US the only country that does this calling it ridiculous. Is that the case is that true or false? That is not the case. There are thirty three countries with similar policies including the United States in Canada. So it's certainly not majority of nations, but the United States is in in good company on that count. So bottom line where does this debate head next? I think that's a really good question. You know, there are certainly those who think that this is a debate that the the White House wants for the next week to try and turn the conversation back from some of the terrible events of the past couple of weeks to immigration, which the Republicans believe is is their strong suit. Whether it content continues and artists beyond that. I think is anyone's guess at this point and more details at Washington Post dot com. John Wagner, national political reporter thank you for being with us. And we'll have more on the border issue. And the caravan coming up in the program more than a thousand people though pouring into one of Pittsburgh's largest synagogues to mourn, the two intellectually disabled brothers who were killed in Saturday's massacre rabbi Jeffrey Meyers says seasonal David Rosenthal, where the very definition of beautiful souls at their funeral. "Have the presence of mind to call nine one one and stayed on that line for twenty agonizing minutes felt like an eternity. I learned. We had a session back in August with our community security advisor. And I learned a number of important things from him one of them was to to carry my cellphone. I normally don't carry it on the Jewish Sabbath. But I learned from him as he said rabbi, it's a different world you need to carry it. And I'm so grateful for his presence and teaching. So I knew right away needed to call nine one one. So I stayed on the phone with them until the swat team extricated me from the synagogue joining us on the phone from Pittsburgh is Peter Smith. He is religion editor for the Pittsburgh post gazette. And let me begin by asking you how the community that you cover is dealing with all of this. You can imagine. The shock the. The grief the. Defensive. Paradox because it's a terrorizing and yet it really people also really drew together in a sense of solidarity. You know, people just everyone saying, I hope you're okay. Okay. Even though people were nowhere near the scene. They just pick. They mean emotionally as much as anything and one of the things I found intriguing from your reporting at post gazette dot com is how rabbi's religious leaders and worshipers prepared for this type of scenario. Oh, yeah. The. This really is not that new. I would say it goes back at least maybe even before nine eleven. Back during the debates over the second intifada where really heated. Where? And then after nine eleven. Increasingly having security at like high holy day services, having buzzers at the door. So that you have to be buzzed in during business hours during the week. That's a routine thing. What I what I go to. Visit synagogues during the week to cover stories. It's absolutely routine things that you know. The buzzer. They I announced by going through the intercom. So that in itself is not a new thing. I'd say currently in recent years the Jewish community federation of greater Pittsburgh, higher security cult consultant a couple of years ago. One of those trainings. Synagogue was for a social service agency. Local Jewish social service agency, which does incidentally, refugee resettlement among other things, and they went to the whole thing active shooter training. What do you do run? Hide fight. You know, the the whole scenario there. They went through. They introduced to stop the bleed kit, which is a crucial piece of medical equipment during events like this. So they were very keyed up on the security consultant, whose former FBI agent reviewed almost as not every synagogue in the Pittsburgh area there quite a number of them. So it would be. That'd be quite a number of reviews, but certainly was available and did a number of these consultations just say, okay. You know, what what does your facility look like what kinds of entrance Negras? Do you have what has a security? Do you want some of them at least at least two of the congregations where I visited in recent days just to gauge reaction in both mentioned that there are members who actually do have do carry weapons. Just in case a case, there is an intruder, but it's up to each congregation to do that or decide to do that. And you know, one of the rabbi said important thing. He's trained. You don't want anybody? You were they ain't gonna in. There you want someone who knows what they're doing. She was saying that in a room full of families with kids. So yeah, you can see what he's getting out of that. But yes, this is not. You say people there's a sense of people say you, I couldn't imagine it ever happening here. But really, they did they did imagine it happening Aaron effect. We had a pretty severe hate crime here back in two thousand where a man went on a racist and antisemitic rampage and shot and killed a number of people. And as I understand, at least, targeted one synagogue. I don't think anyone was hurt in the synagogue was during a business day. But. So. Yeah. One rabbi said, yeah. We really past the point of saying it can't happen here years ago. Peter Smith, can you give us a sense of just how large the Jewish population is in the greater Pittsburgh area. And then in particular in squirrel hill, where this synagogue is located in where the shooting took place Saturday morning. Well, I don't have the figures in front of me. But just earlier this year that tax they released their latest demographic study, which showed. It's a growing and vibrant community. It's in the greater Pittsburgh area about fifty thousand almost. The Jewish residents. Fair number of them. Maybe more than a quarter are in squirrel hill. And that's traditionally been a Jewish neighborhood for generations. What's distinctive is among American urban areas is that remained one? That's you often see a trend, and you do have a trend of suburbanization here. Well, there are a growing number of synagogues in in the suburbs. But squirrel hill still remains very much the hub of Jewish life here. The the main Jewish community centers here. They're probably. Give or take a dozen synagogues in the area. It's it's it's an older neighborhood. It's it's a much luck to neighborhood and not just by the Jewish community, which is important to note. It's a very diverse neighborhood large Asian population, for example. It's a it's a very walkable neighborhood where you can walk down to the corner store and things like that. It's particularly appealing to the orthodox Jewish community because they observe laws that restrict the amount of travel. You can do by car. So on the Chabad, so they're all within walking distance of of a number of synagogues. But it's not just orthodox. There are a number of of the more. Moderate to liberal denominations that had a presence here as well. And that was the case. That's that describes more the synagogue that was targeted there were it was a building that housed two synagogues in the conservative denomination and one in the reconstruction s they were all what you might call more modern branches of Judaism. But they're all. Yeah. So it it even diverse within the Jewish community very diverse there in squirrel hill, everyone felt targeted by this. And you know, the the even though it was a particular strain. Steam of Judaism that happened to practice in that building. I think that was of no consequence to this. This gunman whatsoever and the entire Jewish community. Come together and strong solidarity. He went to the vigils. You saw large number of of orthodox Theros. Well, Peter Smith is joining us from Pittsburgh. He is religion editor for the post gazette in one final question because we heard from the White House earlier today, the president and first lady will be in your community tomorrow. How is that thing received? Well, the announcement just came through. So I have not spoken to anyone since the announcement. Officially I certainly I speak anecdotally that the people that I spoke to at vigils were generally post to him coming there. They they felt the is. Comments after Charlottesville. Were they felt how the question that was asked by one of the speakers at the Saturday night visuals. How can you equivocate over the people marching they're saying there's some good people in some bad people? So yeah. But I'm speaking anecdotally. What I would say is he will be arriving at you know, certainly a very emotionally charged moment. Tuesday's the day of the first scheduled funerals for a pair of brothers who were among those that were killed so emotions will be. Hi, Peter Smith, joining us from Pittsburgh. He's a religion editor for the post gazette. We thank you for your time. Thank you. On Twitter this morning. The president writing the following quote. Was the media not there on Monday. Mike Tomlin is going to speak in fourteen minutes from now. I'm going to guess that might be one of the first couple of questions here. Have you seen in Tonio Brown coach. Really? Yeah, paulie more of this. He was also upset during the law shocker on the day. And then there was a bit of a Twitter back and forth with a former Steeler employees where this employee was criticizing Tonio Brown. And how would he do with the offense? Well, he said that he's lucky that he's got Ben Rothlisberger. Yes and Antonio proudly kidding said, we'll trade me and find out, but then he tweeted that out yesterday whilst missing work. Why don't think he wants to be traded, but I think he was saying, you know, hey, you're, you really want to question me on my value with his team. That becomes bigger here, but you're, you're tweeting. Do you really believe that if Antonio Brown didn't play in Pittsburgh that we would know about until Neo Brown or he would suddenly be a average better than average wide receiver, instead of e said, what four consecutive one hundred yard catches catch seasons. I'm going to guess in Tonio Brown would be able to replicate this in a lot of places. I feel like Ben's lucky to have Antonio Brown at this stage bench career. I think Ben is lucky that he has into Neo Brown. I think Ben is benefited from having good players. He had bus and Hines, ward, and those are hall of fame players. Antonio Brown appears to be headed to the hall of fame lady on bell. First round draft pick has been a very good running back when he was playing for the Steelers. So I think Ben has been very fortunate that they have surrounded him with very good offensive help.
