"In south western Pennsylvania, that continues to be one of our achilles heels and lagging areas in comparison with other parts of the country articles in the paper about it all the time. Exactly. And that's bad quality hair day. Should we be concerned? Absolutely. Everyone should be concerned that that happens. This is something that we have a legacy of problems Pittsburghers can come together and try to make a difference. So that's why we exist. We're trying to elevate the issue. So that change can happen document here. Look, I have to tell you that every time we talk about these issues on the radio added callers, a particular old time Pittsburghers. Crashes? When I was a kid. It's a lot better. Now. I don't know what they're talking about. What are you talking about? Well, I mean, just to an analog their telephones are a lot better than they were, you know, thirty years ago too. So that's that's kind of the deal. We could benchmark ourselves with other cities throughout the country and other areas are improving more than we are. And so if you're a young person, and you want to find a place to live raise a family in work, you can go anywhere nowadays. And why would you choose some place that has bad air? So that's why it's so important. It's for our future that we have to at least get up into a level will recoverable to other cities our size with air quality. But we are seriously lagging since we're talking about air quality. They've been a lot of stories about trains, the kind of material that they're moving through this area, including heavily populate populated areas. We wonder about the. The potential for pollution with these and the infrastructure we have to deal with I met you have a laundry list of things to talk about, sir. The. Norfolk Southern is in the process of applying to increase the volume of trains through Pittsburgh. And to the east end. And there is a capacity for them to be rooting seventy to eighty trains a day. Now analysts at the university of Pittsburgh center for environmental health and communities determined that for every ten trains. That equals six pollution related deaths. A year for every hour that a train idols. That's one pollution related death a year, and we have anecdotal evidence that there are trains idling in Manchester, an environmental Justice area. I two days in two nights, solid. We've trained idling for four days and four nights in the trough of allegany county next to a playground. So what do what do we do? We have to move all this stuff. A fossil fuel based economy, almost what do we do about these things that have to move all this material through through the country. There is existing technology to take care of that. There are tier for engines that are less pollutant work on four engines there also that they can put on the older, locomotives. But at this point Norfolk Southern is saying, we're not going to do anything that we are not required to do by the federal railroad administration because of the expense of it, or what of course, damn the environments. Full speed. And they have a route around the city. You don't have to take these trains through the densely populated city. Now in addition to the pollution. There's an extreme risk of derailment. And. That's the result of running. Double stack trains, which have a higher center of gravity are less stable next to extreme oil trains that are carrying volatile Bach in crude shale oil and tar sand oil along with other chemicals. So if this intermodal train that had derailed near downtown and toppled into one of those trains carrying that Balkan oil through our city could have happened. Besides having traffic disrupted the blast zone. On the route that they're proposing is one mile wide. And within that blast zone. There's all three stadiums. There's a convention center. There's all hospitals. There's the universities schools. It's it's a real concern Twitter is potential for a disaster. I don't think there's any doubt. But again, the question becomes what are we to do to avert that potential yet still move the material that the nation needs to to functional? Well, the first thing that we need to do is to make sure that Norfolk Southern is doing inspections doing them properly and not disregarding the results. Now that accident last August on the south side, they said they had inspected the tracks. Just prior to that accident and. A properly conducted inspection with properly maintained calibrated and certified equipment will catch track failure. Before crash occurs. If it's done properly. So. You've got a concern. And I've called for an investigation of whether these inspections are being done properly because that's a warning sign. Now the other warning sign came last week. I attended a PUC field investigation audit of the merchant street bridge and Norfolk Southern's chief engineer provided a picture of a sinkhole that is literally literally two feet from the rail track, and they have an obligation to repair promptly repair the bridges that they run their rails over that's near bridges may they that sinkhole they did cosmetically, but they didn't do anything to the infrastructure, and it should never gotten to be a sinkhole if it was regularly inspected. All right. So that's a concern. We.

"I also. There's he came off as KOMO mess. He's a quarter. But we've never seen a quarterback. Do a Baker Mayfield is doing. I don't here's a criticism because he responds everything. And it's when he starts playing bad is gonna Pol on them, alone minutes. How will he react how how will handle that? The what he's doing is almost Dion Sanders this quarterback. But that's a quarterback position. We've never seen anything. I think it's a lot harder. It's quarterback is for you to do that. Because you're relying lot of people to make sure that you're able to do your job back. And that that line in Cleveland is not really that Pittsburgh center line that's going to protect like they do with being. So he's he's adding pressure to them along with whatever he says. So it's kind of atom isn't that week? Like, we need to create likability to protect us from our fall. Like, that's all we're saying Baker Mayfield chill out a little bit. Because when if versity hits you will fall down a wrong or to make sure you have a software. I think the standards different in terms of some people just like, hey, man, do the right thing. Now, it has nothing to do with the fall is just like, hey, man. That thing you're doing Hugh Jackson is distracting us from the fact you're about to tie or break Peyton Manning's records. I don't know that. Yeah. You the little undis- undersized quarterback? Who's about to set the football world on fire. I don't need to be talking about your beef with Hugh Jackson, you beef and down. Okay. About to be the biggest star in the league. And you'd be in with a one in thirty to coach you beef. And I will challenge the audience to separate the signal from the noise and no real from fake. And also challenge the same audience that didn't know that as a fact to look at it like this Hugh Jackson, and I'm not just going to talk about him coaches in general have cut cut players midnight hours. I've seen a coach take a player star. Layer gonna go quarterback quarterback this Goto. Our let's go to our state of the union season ticket holder meeting. That's starting quarterback get on the bus cut him in that moment after they sales season tickets point being coaches, some roofless things. Well, there's no question Marcel, but you've just moved the goalpost. Because again, what I'm talking about is Baker Mayfield doing the right thing not protecting himself when there's adversity. He is diminishing Baker Mayfield this kids, and what he's done in Cleveland Cleveland hasn't had a winning record in a decade. And a rookie quarterback is about to take them. There would have Peyton Manning type performance as a rookie. We're not talking about. We're talking about all his little beefs and they asked him everyday. Were you staring down? Hugh Jackson, and all this other stuff. He's putting shine own Hugh Jackson, but I do Hanson's done the laughing stock. This would be like arguing with Rich Kotite. Look, this whole thing is interesting separate conversation. But I do like the does of of our world. I do like the I like the smoke givers. And then they just gotta go in there and say they nobody's like, I think I like that. It's not a fact of liking or disliking. It's as a quarterback, you don't do these type of things because adversely. He's gonna hit them. Now when adversity hitting he's gonna shut up now, you're gonna say, oh, he's not being himself now. But it's not about a he's the same guy. All he's not gonna stare anybody down. Yes. Throws Kelsey interception. Oh, yes. He will go check his college sister. This to me if I was advising viruses, dead, James, whomever. This. What is Baker Mayfield wanna be polarizing why doesn't he want to be?.

"The rescuers have not even been able to reach the worst hit places yet, many, thousands, probably. Dead or dying at this moment, professor comfort. There had been a lot of talk about prevention and international efforts after that huge soon. Nami in two thousand and four killed at quarter million people what happened after that did some some post two thousand four effort failing. No it didn't fail. This is a very hard problem. It's a very complex problem. A lot of international aid poured into Indonesia at the time Indonesia itself made a major effort to develop a better disaster management plan disaster warning efforts and the US contributed science technology. Bubis Germany, France Japan, most of the nations and the United Nations group contributed to developments in internet. But it's a difficult problem and Indonesia in an archipelago with seventeen thousand plus islands is hard to pretend. So we it also needs I think he continuing international collaboration to build the science. To develop the technology for undersea, measurements of Saddam is that will enable people to have better and more accurate knowledge of where the ce`namas are likely to occur. So the warning system in place in Indonesia, why did that not work was at a technological error human error? What went wrong? Well, again, it's difficult to do Indonesia has several different measurements in place. The seismometers network did function they were able to locate the epicenter and the magnitude of the earthquake what they did not have in place were Bubis would measure the displacement of the water in the ocean floor, and that's critical. It's expensive of the research project that I have lead in collaboration with Indonesian colleagues is still in. In the testing phase it was actually stalled, but we need to move that forward. And again, I think it takes an international effort ce`namas are not just a problem for Indonesia. They're a problem for coastal cities across the world. Give us a sense of what this anomaly warning system that you're working on would do and we're that project stance. Well, this project was ready for installation. This fall it consists of a network of underwater sensors that. Use a bottom pressure sensor to measure the change in the water column. The data are then communicated via communication center serves under the water and would go to a cable sure station that would transmit the data via satellite to the Indonesian agency became B M K G where the scientists would validate the records and indicate. Make a decision on his to NAMI warning and the level of the Sunni Barney of that information, then go out to the provinces in the city's emergency operation centers, and they would send communications to the neighborhoods, and the people we had also been working on a wireless network via electronic devices, essentially hand held devices that would create a temporary hotspot in the communities that would enable people to exchange information and essentially rescue themselves one of the difficulties and Paulo was that the electricity was out the cell towers were down. There was no means of communication and this made the evacuation on land very very difficult. Professor Louise comfort. "Love it. To death toll continues to rise. Now above thirteen hundred people rescue crews are still searching for survivors intentions are arising people are taking desperate actions to find food skirmishes between civilians and police have escalated because supplies are getting harder to come by journalists Rebecca Hinchey is in Palu for the BBC was tightly packed houses and shops all now reduced to rubble people. Here say they only had a few minutes warning after that strong quake on Friday to flee to higher ground when they saw huge waves coming in those that could survive did. So by clinging onto trees and buildings now families a camping out in the open this family over here. That's collected. What they can and a surviving off the food. They have. There's no power here and very little fresh food or fresh water people are saying that they desperately need to get in. That's the BBC's Indonesia editor Rebecca Henchi now reports suggest people on shore did not get adequate warnings about the soon NAMI but earthquakes in Sioux nominees, typically go together. So how could such a massive natural disaster. Take so many people by surprise. Let's discuss it with professor Louise comfort. The former director of the university of Pittsburgh's center for disaster management. She's been working on the US side to develop a su- NAMI warning system for the area with grant from the National Science Foundation, professor comfort. Welcome to one A. Thank you for having me. I should note. We'll be discussing this for just the first part of our program before we move on. So if you have questions or thoughts about the Indonesia quake or sue NAMI, now's the time to send them in one at W A M U dot org. Comment on our Facebook page or tweet us at one A before we talk about Indonesia's, specifically give us just kind of a basic size Malla g lesson. Why do earthquakes and soon nominees go together? Well, the cinema is caused by an undersea either earthquake or landslide, and that is a rupture of the ocean floor where part of the ocean floor goes up. The other part goes down in it displaces, a huge volume of water, and that causes the Sonani kind of like if you stop your foot in the bathtub, and it makes a wave. Exactly exactly very big wave. Exactly you do. We have a better sense geologically size. Seismological what happened in Indonesia this weekend? What it was with in and on top of the earth that caused all this devastation. Well, actually, the geologists are still searching for an explanation. One explanation was that there was a very large body of sediment that was located under the earthquake and that would be consistent with an undersea landslide. So they don't know yet. The epicenter itself. Trick likely triggered this movement. And the displacing the water is what caused the cinema. Can you? Give us a sense of what it takes to investigate something. Like, this will be talking about satellite, imagery, or divers or what kinds of data are being collected right now. Satellite imagery, is certainly being collected in that's available. But that only shows you the top of the ocean. And what you really need is a depth sounding. It's called the imagery. And this would take a ship that would do soundings to reach the depth of the ocean. Enter try to identify exactly where the rupture occurred, and where the shift of the ocean floor occurred, the generated the anomaly professor it seems like the size of the soon. Nami caught some people by surprise. Why was this? So apparently unexpected. I'm sorry to say earthquakes and ce`namas are not unexpected in Indonesia it lies on the ring of fire. And there is a major earthquake somewhere in Indonesia every year an earthquake above seven points on the Richter scale. So that part is not a surprise of the actual event..

"Last year when president trump pulled out of the paris climate accord he famously said i was elected to represent the citizens of pittsburg not paris but pittsburgh's mayor bill purdue wasn't having it he laid out a plan to cut greenhouse gas emissions in half by twenty thirty one big part of that renewable energy and green building but there are concerns that lower income predominantly african american communities in pittsburgh could get left behind from the marketplace desk w esa in pittsburgh eric embarrass reports it's freezing outside and not a whole lot warmer in eighty seven year old barbara williams house even with a new furnace and added insulation some rooms are still so cold she avoids them all together and things used to be even worse her daughter brenda pain i remember seeing a few times in three hundred dollar gas bills if not higher for a month and house was still be freezing cold derek morris with pittsburgh's habitat for humanity gets thousands of calls from people like this all over the country lower income families spend more on utilities than families with higher incomes here in pittsburgh they spend about three times more most of the housing is old and lunka families can't afford to do these type of projects to to make their homes more efficient it's just it's outside of their realm projects like installing solar panels and as more city residents and businesses produce their own energy they pay less into traditional systems and that shifts a bigger burden per person to those left behind who i saw this happen to lower income residents in two thousand fifteen the cost to that group began to rise in terms of having to pay for their electricity consumption because it needed to be spread out over fewer customers that's gregory read he runs the university of pittsburgh center for energy it's working with the city and utility companies to build independent migrants that generate electricity he says they'll keep energy concentrated and spread costs evenly whether it's someone living in older.

"Cuba have the feeling that you're stuck in a time loop on autopilot just doing the same thing day after day after day hopefully you've never experienced at literally the way bill murray did in groundhog day herald ramos directed the film which came at a 1993 danny rubin wrote the screenplay and doug gordon sat down to talk with him and at the center view sounds familiar that's because this is a reprot cast which seems appropriate danny for those few people out there who haven't seen groundhog day the one or two and even for those who have seen it it's probably only fitting to be reminded can you give us a summary of the story line a cynical selfcentred pittsburgh centered whether man is sent to cover the the annual groundhog festival in punxsutawney which is something he does not look forward to and winds up repeating that same day waking up every morning in punxsutawney against his and and defying any explanation so how did you come up with the idea i was just trying to come up with an idea for a movie everywhere i looked i was thinking about would that be a moving on there's a guy with a shovel of that a story and i was in a movie theater waiting for the lights to come down ahead of book about vampires and i was just sort of thinking about things and i was musing about what's cool about vampires is they're like people only some of the rules are different and one of the cool rules is that they can live forever so i started thinking i wonder what would be like to live forever and would a person change differently than if they had only had one lifetime and what about one of these arrested development kinda guys who can't quite grow up maybe one lifetime isn't enough so i was really trying to tell a story about eternity and and how that affected a person it was just a very cumbersome idea even though i thought it was kind of interesting and then i remembered at one of a gazillion ideas i'd scratched out over the last couple of years and it was a guy repeats the same day over and over again which seems like that's the whole movie right there but it really isn't it had to be about a human life and had to be about something and.
