Maybe with some garlic in balsamic vinegar or Bacon for the last few years. They've been huge on restaurant menus. That's apparently because like pickering's brings. Restaurateurs also get that yes. That's the cheap one starts at thirty five thousand dollars. The luxury model s started about seventy five thousand even if you can get a federal or state tax credit. These prices are out of range for many people and electric vehicles won't get a groundswell globally until prices. Come down way down. What's needed pundits? Say is an electric car for all which is why Renault is getting Kudos for its newest electric vehicle which breaks the price barrier arear. It's an all electric version of the quid and economical car with a reputation for being solidly built the quid. That's K. W. W I D I launched an India for the equivalent of about four thousand dollars this month. Renault introduced the Renault City KS E E in China. It starts at less than sixty two thousand one approximately eight thousand seven hundred. US dollars according to Dr Reporter Edward Neater Meyer the the car has a stated range of about one hundred fifty five miles before you have to recharge the battery most EVT's average one hundred miles or so these days but at least the eight models available in the US can go more than two hundred miles including Tesla's model three at two hundred forty miles still given the Renault city vs very decent range and extremely low price the drives Eric neater Meyer is hailing it as a rugged and reliable vehicle suited for millions of first time I am car buyers in the developing world which he says is exactly what's needed to transform electric vehicles from luxury products for the wealthy here that Tesla Portion Jaguar agw into accessible transportation for everyone and in so doing make true progress toward a world of zero emissions at least on the road Chinese drivers will be able to buy one of the vehicles by the end of the year it or something a lot like it should hit Europe within the next five years. Renault said this month a new European Model EVI will be priced at no more than ten thousand euros or about eleven thousand American dollars or about the US market so far only about about one percent of autos in America are all electric. China and Europe are racing ahead and ev adoption because both regions are raising emission standards to require zero emissions vehicles USA Today reports Renault is currently the number one ev seller in Europe with an electric hatchback called the Zoe but competition for the cheapest subcompact these there is heating up from automakers Opel Peugeot and Volkswagen. VW Launches Subcompact called the ID three next. We're only a few months ago. We told you about the race. PBA DOT com slash B W daily the from wonder I'm David Brown and this is business words daily on this Tuesday September twenty four remember this sorry Charlie Yep that's Charlie the famous starkist tuna who was wrong about everything he ever said we shared his famous phrase with you you late last October after star Kist pled guilty to federal felony charges of price-fixing along with competitors Bumblebee and chicken of the sea the company company had colluded to falsely keep prices high for two years between twenty eleven and twenty thirteen that was a real problem for retailers and consumers since the three companies any supply four fifths of all the canned tuna eaten in the US. The case has been under investigation for years last week. Federal judge finally handed star Kist a one one hundred million dollar fine for its actions one hundred million dollars. The maximum penalty allowed by law. The fine was a disappointment to star Kist which should complain to financial hardship and asked to pay only fifty million but the hardship argument didn't sway. US District Court Judge Edward Chen who said in effect sorry sorry Charlie. It's possible that greed was the motivation for the price fixing scheme but desperation may have also played a row remember when tuna sandwiches were almost as popular populars. PB and J. in school lunches will not so much anymore. Over the three decades that ended in twenty-six tuna sales declined by almost forty percent according to the Wall Street Journal title the paper reports that millennials are turning away from processed foods in droves last year star Kist Marketing and Innovation Executive told the journal a lot of millennials. Don't don't even own can openers with no can openers and millennials kitchen doors both star-kist the industry leader and Bumblebee are struggling Bumblebee which earlier paid twenty five million dollars in fines is reported to be considering bankruptcy. Both companies were allowed to pay their penalties interest free over five years but star. Kist which is a subsidiary of a Korean company called Dongwon group has also warned that it may lay off some of its twenty six hundred employees. It's also weighing whether to move a plant from American Samoa to Thailand Star. Kist says the investigation is now officially over but it is hardly the end of high profile price-fixing vice fixing investigations in the food business in July. The Department of Justice launched a criminal investigation into alleged price-fixing in the chicken industry. It is investigating instigating whether poultry giant Tyson foods and pilgrim's pride among others colluded to keep those prices artificially high if the allegations turn out to be true you the chicken industry doesn't have its tuna compatriots possible reasons for pushing prices higher chickens after all aren't processed food and so the poultry poultry providers can't blame their problems on the dearth of can openers and millennials kitchens. Try It free for thirty days and get a free ten pound scale when you visit. PBA DOT com slash B W daily they from wondering I'm David Brown and this is business wars daily happy Friday everyone we've made it. I don't know about where you are but it's still awfully hot down here. In Austin the kind of heat that's best treated with the day the movies or a nice cool dip in the swimming pool boy. Does that sound good. The problem is most of us. Don't have swimming pools and most public pools get drained after Labor Day. So finding a spot to swim hasn't been the easiest task ask until recently when a startup named swiftly decided to take the airbnb approached pools using the swiftly APP. If you have a pool in your backyard and you want to make a little extra money you can offer strangers the opportunity to rent it out by the hour for feet considerate the sharing economy underwater order in a good way since I'm actively looking for weekend swim spot I thought at tested out went to the website plugged in my city Austin Texas and chose the same day hey to see what I could find. At the last minute. My search turned up seven pools ranging in price from twenty dollars an hour at the east side country club to one hundred dollars an hour or for a private pool with a hot tub in someone subdivision at it'd be fair. The Country Club looked pretty stark and that hundred dollar an hour pool looked clean and peaceful but all this begs the question. Do you trust swimming in a stranger's pool. How clean is it and who else might be there the CO founders twenty-two-year-old CEO Benhamlat skin and his business partner Asher Weinberger say they thought of that they contract with local pool maintenance companies to make sure you won't find anything Hickey in your rented pool as for Privacy in the New Yorker writer Bruce Handy reported that simply tries to ensure that is well L. for instance handy says owners are supposed to keep their window shades down no spying allowed but when handy made a test visit in Long Island the owner was laws peering out the window. That's pretty creepy but it could be worse. We imagine for those pools that are labeled. Nude friendly swim please. Origins is our humble more like a teenager snow shoveling or lawn mowing business than a Silicon Valley Gig Economy Startup home from college in Lakewood New Jersey a couple of summers ago last skin got the idea while swimming in a neighbor's unused pool his family had been paying the neighbor for the privilege as Handy writes in The New Yorker Alaskan thought it could be a real business using Google Earth lasker found eighty pools nearby and contacted their owners all but four refused to talk to him but those four will they agreed to list their APU for rent and swiftly was born though at the time last game had no idea that it would eventually be a real business with pools in so far thirty thirty six states swiftly took off fast on the back of a homemade website and a newspaper at the business grew more than thirty pools in just a couple of weeks and and then lastly told Handy. MSNBC mentioned simply and Alaskans website crashed a year later. Alaskan dropped out of college to go full time with the new business today he and Weinberger have a professional website liability insurance for hosts and even rental Porta potties for hosts who are really busy to afford all of this simply charges the pool owners commissions and takes a small fee from swimmers. The metrics around the business seem a little loosey Goosey in one of the many articles covering simply the founders say some hosts. You're making four thousand dollars a month renting out their pools in other that number climbed to ten thousand to fifteen thousand dollars a month regardless of what the true earnings really are one thing is most likely true for many families. The backyard Dr Pool begins as an enthusiasm and winds up as a wasteland swiftly turns it back into something thoroughly useful. How long will it take for a rival pool. Sharing during company to pop up possibly not very long but for now swiftly doesn't appear to have a head to head or should we say a pooled pool competitor but within the wider recreation industry will there are more and more airbnb like apps for almost anything you want to do you could choose a different recreation creation sharing. You know that Ole joke someone goes to a Cadillac Shin raises her hand to scratch your nose and all of a sudden she finds she's bid on and won a cow. That actually happened to my producer years ago. Although luckily she didn't have to take it home well think about that while you think about this. Amazon is testing out a system that would allow you to well will raise your hand to pay for stuff at the checkout counter instead of Swiping your credit card or waving your phone at a scanner you just hold up your hand nearest scanner without actually truly touching it. No you might not buy a cow by mistake but I can imagine a few things that could go wrong but let's get serious for a second the system. Amazon John is experimenting with his code named Orville. Maybe after one of the Wright brothers who knows according to popular mechanics hand geometry was first patented in Nineteen eighty-five five making it ancient by high tech innovation standards the F. B. I. Says Hand Geometry has been widely used for things like employee attendance and access excess to protected places from the residential village at the nineteen ninety six summer Olympics to Walt Disneyworld to create a profile you lay your hand down on on a flat surface and a camera captures several photos of your hand and the shadows it casts the system then analyzes thirty one thousand data points and ninety measurements and translates them into a new Miracle Algorithm and while Ah an in-depth geometric hand profile this biometric technology technology is currently accurate to within one ten thousand of one percent but that's not good enough for Amazon which is trying to tune it up and make it accurate for it to within a millionth of one percent. Amazon is hoping to Roll Orville out at whole foods within months to use it an Amazon prime customer would create a hand profile and link it to their Amazon account once that's done to check out. You'd hold up your hand to a special scanner. Checking out would take only three three hundred milliseconds. Give or take a millisecond. If you're truly time starved you'll appreciate the dramatic improvement. A typical checkout now takes a full three to four seconds. According to the New York Post right now. Amazon workers are testing out old Orville by hand scanning snacks from a handful of vending machines in Amazon's John's New York offices why use hand geometry rather than say facial recognition concerns over surveillance make most consumers rather rather wary of being tracked that way but Amazon may be banking on the notion that we've gotten so used to using our fingerprints to unlock our phones or access APPs. We won't worry about sharing our hand. Profiles still a privacy expert interviewed by The New York Post warned that if someone hacks stores system they they could steal the stored hand profiles solving that identity theft problem would be an even greater nightmare than the ones. We're already familiar with. She said dead according to an email newsletter called the Hustle Amazon is far from the only tech company interested in using our physical bodies to make shopping easier this week apple patented a watch strap that can identify US via the skin on our wrists and use that skin data to speed up the checkout process as the hustled says it's all part of a plan to take all of the friction out of paying for things the easier and faster it is to check out of a store. The less we feel the pain of paying they tell us and when we don't feel the pain of paying you guessed it we spend more money. I'm wondering this business daily would pay raise your hands. Would you use your hand to check out a whole foods or any other store. Why or why not tweet at business we'd love to hear from. I'm David Brown back back with you tomorrow. The Amazon is he's burning as we now know in late August aerial photographs showing Sao Paulo plunged into darkness in the middle of the day stunned the world that day turn night eclipse lips was a mystery at first but soon it became clear that the cause was some eighty thousand fires burning thousands of miles away in the Amazon rainforest the F. Corporation the multibillion dollar owner of Timberland vans shoes and the north face does not want any part of it late last month it announced that it will stop buying vying Brazilian leather. It won't start again the company said until quote we have the confidence and assurance that the materials used in our products do not contribute due to environmental harm in the country so what does footwear have to do with fires well. The fires on the edges of the Amazon are result of deforestation the station in drought loggers farmers and ranchers cut down trees often illegally they also set fires to clear vast swaths of ranchland mostly to fulfill the world's growing demand for beef. There are fires in the Amazon every year but the number of blazes this year is up about eighty percent over last year according to CNN the news outlet reports that the growth in the blazes is purposeful a result of pro beef industry policies promoted by Brazil's president gyroscope scenario Brazil is the world's largest exporter of beef Bolsonaro says he is not to blame the Amazon rainforest plays a huge role in mitigating climate change. The area is so enormous that unharmed it produces about twenty percent of the world's oxygen BEF Corp says it makes about five hundred million products a year making it one of the largest users of raw all materials in its industry in its effort to improve the company sustainability. VF Corp has been overhauling its supply chain by twenty twenty one. The company claims it will reduce the environmental impact of its raw materials by thirty five percent. Now one of those materials is leather Timberland. You know the Conic Yellow Boot Company is. VF's largest leather user leather is a significant contributor to greenhouse gas emissions. That's because of land-use changes like clearing parts parts of the rainforest. It's also do the copious amounts of methane made by the cattle themselves v F says fifteen percent of its greenhouse gas emissions come from leather weather. It's largest contributors cotton at more than forty percent given its public commitment to cleaning up the supply chain. It's response to the Amazon fires. This makes sense. One of Timberland's biggest rivals is doc Martin maker of the iconic Black boot. The British brand earned revenues news of about three hundred fifty million pounds last year up twenty percent from the year before the much smaller brand has made no public supply chain commitment similar to those of the F. Corp but like the F. It belongs to a consortium called the leather working group which sources materials from tanneries that attempt to reduce the environmental impact of leather processing icing on its own the corpse decision isn't likely to have much effect on Brazil's commitment to fighting fires in the Amazon but often where one company goes rose so go others and when they do together they have an impact so to do shoppers who as we pointed out here more and more lately are increasingly concerned about where their products come from and what effects they may be causing. Colorado giants Vail Resorts and Altarum Mountain Company has been doing two things each has been buying up resorts across the country country and abroad and they've been creating huge season pass programs the give pass holders access to the mountains they own as well as to partner resorts all over the globe globe as the two fierce rivals focus on selling more and more season passes daily lift ticket prices get ever more jaw-dropping last season season daily passes to vail or beaver creek another high end. Colorado resort broke two hundred dollars for the first time making those to Vail owned resorts the most expensive in the US. That's a hefty fee especially. If you want to bring the kids why so pricey will impart the strategies to force you to make the comparison and determined that a pass is far more economical than buying daily lift tickets why spend two hundred nine dollars to ski for a Single Day at Vale when you could good spent about a thousand dollars to ski all winter whether you're in Vermont or Utah even Japan for people who are sure they want to ski at least a few days this it's winter a pass from one company or the other can save you a bunch of money. Veils epoch pass is good at sixty nine different resorts the icon which Altera Tehrik created just last year will get you into forty one resorts from Colorado steamboat to the icons newest European Destination Zermatt in Switzerland. It's not easy to give a head to head comparison on prices because the potential combinations are dizzying. Do you want ski in only one state while there's a price for that. I want unlimited skiing including over holidays everywhere. That's different current prices unveils season passes range from about four hundred dollars for local resorts to nine hundred sixty nine dollars to ski anywhere including new resorts in Japan and Australia. Alturas cost around five hundred dollars for local resort pass say Colorado's winter park to just over a thousand bucks for access to all forty. One destinations and there are discounts for veterans teran's in children and for people who can skip the most popular holiday times. If you're shopping get actress spreadsheets depending on how much you ski either pass could save you megabucks compared to a single day lift ticket but you knew this was coming. There's a catch to get these discounts. You have to be a planner owner low prices and before Thanksgiving that's because a few years ago the rivals parent companies realized it would be smart to book revenue while Violets still warm out there rather than waiting for unpredictable Mother Nature to deliver customers early season pass revenue wooden just smooth out the bumpy nature of the ski a business it would give each company predictable revenue stream and for Vail boost share prices just like subscription businesses everywhere of course if you're an individualist. They're still bumper stickers on old vehicles in the Colorado rockies that say F- Vale you can still find an independent independent mountain or to those family mountains whether in Colorado or any other mountain state or often more down to earth not to mention cheaper than the glitzy resorts. That's a virtually untapped market for razor makers and those sales have to come from somewhere schick sells its razors through brick and mortar retailers and and those sales have been losing ground to online razor makers harry's and the dollar shave club of course schick parent edge well now owns harry's a shrewd move but the company is still trying trying to support chicks brick and mortar sales shit claims that people who shave their heads shaved three times as often as men who shave their beards and mustaches by targeting getting a market that looks on the face of it anyway to offer a ton of opportunity schick is trying to stave off gillette speight. The legacy razor company is so weekday its owner proctor and gamble runoff eight billion dollars from its books essentially that means p. and g. adjusted gillette's value downward citing what we already know that fewer men are shaving their facial hair just because those relatively few men who already shaved their head shave often however does not mean that ships bald important important people initiative will catch on will be able to transform baldness from frustrating too fashionable well. The washington post reported that customers were grabbing for portions of pork while the butcher was still slicing it new stores overwhelming popularity may not have come as a surprise to costco leadership however which planned the launched launched religiously and took their time but its magnitude came as a surprise to observers of the chinese grocery business say foreign operators have struggled there until until recently chinese shoppers preferred local stores forcing foreign supermarket chains to concede defeat britain's tesco spain's dea and france's dances carrefour have all left china according to the financial times. First chick-fil-a wanted to remind everyone politely of course since since chick-fil-a must protect its reputation for stellar customer service it wouldn't do to be snarky well as twitter wars do this one blew up feeling thing henpecked twitter's had to respond and they did in huge flocks so popeye's which originated in louisiana and is now headquartered in florida fought back with just two carefully chosen southern words words which in other circumstances could inside a schoolyard brawl over a re tweet of chick-fil-a fillets math problem popeye's asked y'all good and with that as buzzfeed wrote the gauntlet was thrown twitter became a buzz as it is wont to do and for a few minutes there the heat was not about political fights but about who makes the best fried chicken sandwich naturally lesser chicken sandwich sellers wendy's shake shack rush to join the fight and every poultry player benefited gaining likes re tweets and followers but none more so ban popeye's which picked up twenty five thousand new followers in just a few days c._n._b._c. reported in the real world popeye's was loving this twitter war and the sales it spurred knowing that a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush. Some customers tried to sell their sandwiches for hundreds of dollars. The washington post reported popeye's ran out of chicken sandwiches in some locations and began warning that they could soon become as scarce as hen's teeth then had happened. They ran out store by store and they had to post handwritten signs on their windows. Telling anxious diners that there were no more of the sandwiches by august twenty six six just fourteen days after launch there was nary a popeye sandwich to be found from coast to coast and that of course spark yet more tweets by customers clucking clucking their disapproval to that popeye's tweeted it will soon bring back the sandwich permanently this time now this being twitter in two thousand nineteen the controversy he did spark a lot of serious discussion and a superbly written piece in vox about the health of factory farmed poultry the labor conditions on those farms and in fast food restaurants and the exhaustion of popeye's workers toiling sixty hours a week because of our love of batter fried birds and it spawned a lot of other political talk to along with discussion about the racial racial differences in the markets for chick-fil-a popeye's but we won't get any of that here instead for the final say or we should call it the final cluck perhaps we'll turn to food writer and soul food scholar adrienne miller who says i thought it was a very fun food fight and nothing deeper than that although like the thousands on twitter miller miller couldn't resist weighing in i've had both sandwiches. You may have heard our story in february about fitbit and apple watch users who said their lives were saved when they're smart watches alerted them to very fast or very slow heartbeats and they sought medical help will now fit bid is transforming its devices into accessories that do everything from tracking your heart rate to your weight loss to your sleep and beyond last week it announced a new ten dollars a month subscription service called fitbit premium. The service offers workouts access to health coaches and personalized health reports but you can and bring to your doctor. The company also announced the next version of its smartwatch the versa too in a humorous ad campaign called. What else could they do. Fit bit implied that diversity versity can do pretty much anything. One of the most significant changes is that you can now talk to the versa using amazon's alexa voice technology the fitbit ad campaign shows users ranging from herod workers to sweaty exercisers commanding the versa to to delay a meeting call up a spotify playlist ensured that they're entree really is begin even provide conversation fodder for a first date. The implication is that the verse two is essential to helping you get through your days as the campaigns punchline. The versa too can do virtually everything you could want but it can't predict whether you'll get a second date. The two hundred dollar our watch will go on sale. App and a fall detector hector up against such tough competition fitbit has had a tough time. Its stock price was down to less than three dollars. A share prior to this announcement so fitbit's bits leaders are attempting to morph the device maker into a software and services company that will generate profits from subscriptions starting with the new fitbit premium sure sure the initial service offers consumer wellness services but i wonder whether fitbit's devices and future smart watches from all companies will continue to be seen as fun consumer boomer trackers or were they'll cross the line and become outright medical devices after all fitbit promises that subscription service will eventually help you manage of chronic conditions like diabetes heart disease high blood pressure and sleep apnea and fitbit claims all of the data you'll be able to track will help your physician improve. Dot com slash b w daily the uh for i'm wondering i'm david brown and this is business wars daily happy friday everyone well. It's every manager's nightmare chimaera public mistake one so obvious factually inaccurate but there's just no hiding it. That's exactly what happened to the marketing department. At mountain dew the iconic connick soda brand owned by pepsico back in june. The brand launched a campaign called the do nited states intending to celebrate the uniqueness of all fifty states is it designed bottle specific to each state and promised prizes to soda drinkers who collected all fifty but it made one glaring geographical error over on one map. It mistakenly assigned ownership of the upper peninsula to wisconsin for the record. The upper peninsula belongs to michigan. That's the twenty six thousand thousand acres of land that separates lakes michigan and superior as fast company notes yeah. It's hardly a priority for most fortune five hundred companies but not surprisingly residents of the upper peninsula or the u._p. Is the call. The region were quite miffed. The guy who runs the u._p._s. twitter handle a man named bugsy sailor triple triple dog dared the brand to come out with a special upper peninsula branded mountain dew and to give a free case to every u._p. Resident well. We wouldn't be too surprised to find business schools using this case as an example of what to do when you're caught in a blender pepsico took bugsy sailor seriously asli that's right within a day mountain dew vice president of marketing nico- portwood got in touch with sailor assured him the brand would make a special upper peninsula salah bottle now. They needed suggestions for what to put on it. Portwood asked residents of the u._p. They're called uber's to tell pepsi co. What was special about the remote region then the brand designed new label and plastered on nine hundred six bottles of mountain dew gave the sodas away at the upper peninsula state fair where by the way they also gave the ninety thousand attendees chance to dunk mountain dew employees in a dunk tank talk about eating crow more seriously. The brand also redid digital t._v. commercials commercials giving the upper peninsula back to its rightful state on the map. What pepsico couldn't do was to sell the branded soda to come out with quickly one thing to navigate the tricky approval processes and regulations necessary to put it on store shelves well that would have taken too long portwood told fast company in the process mountain dew grew hundreds of thousands of new fans on social media mostly from the u._p. And got a boatload of publicity so what could have been an embarrassing flop turned into a refreshing win for a brand that unlike most sodas is still doing well rival coke as the country's most popular soda but surprisingly mountain dew is the fourth most popular soda in the country. That's according to the motley fool which says its success. Ass is largely regional mountain. Dew is particularly popular in appalachia. "Of seven pro online from Pitney bowes okay so the thing about this interest rate drop. It's not just trump who thinks we should do it plenty of other people whole thing. We should like Janet Yellen someone told me A._F._C.. Yeah everyone ever you know everyone at this point and this is the thing it's a little bit uncomfortable. Comfortable <hes> because trump has been demanding this over and over again right unless I get really uncomfortable whenever an agreed with trump yeah well. It's also because historically the Federal Reserve likes to to protect its independence it. It doesn't like to give the impression that it's responding to political pressures but we we've reached a point where pretty much everyone does agree with Donald Trump to some extent that it's probably time to cut rates. Jenny yelling recently gave a statement saying I would do it to kind of back up Durham Pal and give him cover are saying listen. This is not a political thing like if I were still fed chair. I would be in favor of this so basically everyone's surrounding Jerome Powell with reasons to do this. He's also it's. It's pretty clear that he feels this way as well. He seems so come to the conclusion that the economy is in a bit of a fragile place to and the Fed is not hitting its benchmarks and this is now now. I guess the question of why does everything it's time to cut and one of the answers just very simply is that inflation has been really low technically. The Fed has a two percent that inflation target. That's like that's. It's official goal and they are not having it for years now. They've been missing the two percent target. They have not been able to get it up to two percent. Why is that bad well. A some people think inflation is just healthy. It encourages investors to go out and invest in things that might have a slightly higher return. <hes> <hes> take more risks instead of leaving the money in the bank. You have to do something more productive with it because you can make more eats away. That's they're all sorts of reasons. Why you want some amount of inflation just kind of keep the economy going but it's also just when you have really really low inflation? If something goes wrong then you can risk falling into deflation and deflation is scary when when prices start to fall that can really just like grind economy entirely to a halt once you end up in a deflationary trap it can be really hard to get out of it and so you want to have a little bit of a buffer see. The idea is will lower interest rates. Yeah it'll basically make money more available you lower interest rates and the ideas it spurs some amount of economic activity in eventually Ashley. That's going to push up prices that that's the hope that you you can spur some sort of inflation. I guess it's helpful actually to go back to why they start raising rates in the first place right during the recession we cut interest rates zero was part of effort to try save the economy and the first time they raised rates after that was two thousand fifteen and V idea there at the time was too slowly and kind of responsibly raise interest rates so that if inflation did suddenly tick up they wouldn't have to like really rapidly race them in order to put out the fire. The idea was to kind of gradually go back to normal but it sounds like what you're saying. Is People expected affected some inflation to come when we raised interest rates but did that happen. This was the thing there was this idea that inflation is just around the corner growths just around the corner. All of their model suggested re rising wages. Were just around the corner. It's GonNa Happen. Any Day now tomorrow and we just have to get a little bit ahead of the curve that was the idea and and then none of the happened. We never got that inflation. They never got that son there was there was no not even close to a sudden spike in inflation. You know wage. Growth has improved over time. I'm as the as the labor market has gotten better. There was no suddenly they didn't really took off on a tear right and what's become obvious over time. Is that a lot of the models the the Fed was sort of relying on old standbys. Old Warhorses of the profession weren't really working anymore and so when I say like cutting rates now is is sort of a big oops are like we fucked up. It's because it's the culmination of all this. It's like all the decisions they made over the past. You know five years. Essentially I have not gone according to plan and instead. Were at this very fragile point in the economy where it's like oh well. Maybe we need to double back and try to now suddenly kind of stimulant. It is a little bit more the stimulus even though a lot of people agree that we need it now. Jordan says we actually needed it a long time ago. One of the great and very bitter ironies of the trump administration in this kind of predictable was that Republicans have totally given up worrying about the deficit and are now just spending and spending and spending and that's probably a lot of what what is actually made the economy as good as it is. We've been living on a lot of stimulus recently which is fine. We needed that. We needed that earlier. During tax cut the yeah we all get a tax cut but it's also also they've lifted spending caps. They've basically eviscerated the old tea party era budget agreements like they're spending the opening the wallet and you know the heartbreaking part of that. Is We needed that. It to happen in two thousand eleven twelve thirteen when the economy was in much worse shape and now we're getting it kind of when the economy's and better overall shape than it was then was so it sounds like what you're saying though is that the wallets already open an so lowering interest rates. Will that actually make that big of a difference because that's the this is a profound on question. Actually the you're actually poking at a is like how responsive is the economy to a small cut in interest rates. I don't know if there's really I don't know if there's a scientific consensus on what a quarter point cutting rates is actually going to do for the economy and there's no way we'll ever know because there's so many confounding factors but it's what we've got. It's what we got exactly. Most people expect to a small cut. They don't expect like a big dramatic cut today. It's almost just as important though about the signal they're sending for the future the ideas they're not going to tighten further. Probably they're not going to keep hiking. They're saying says okay. We're cutting back and and were were trying.

It created a fake boutique called Polisi, and it used it to convince social media influencers and purportedly shoe shoppers everywhere that a thirty dollar discount shoe is tractive and well-made as designer footwear sold for hundreds of dollars. Well, policy made headlines and a lot of laughs. But it apparently didn't convince the shoppers who matter PayLess filed for chapter eleven bankruptcy protection on Monday. By may, it will close twenty one hundred locations in the US and Puerto Rico about sixteen thousand workers will lose their jobs. Payless owes one point three million dollars in severance to workers laid off before this new filing. And according to CNN has said, it doesn't know whether it'll be able to come up with the money that obviously put severance for the sixteen thousand workers in jeopardy. This is the company's second trip to bankruptcy court. It file chapter eleven protection in April of twenty seventeen emerging in the summer with fewer stories and its debt cut in have PayLess, which is sixty three years old is one of the largest footwear change in the western hemisphere. Stay tuned to the end of the show to find out how Pitney Bowes and send pro online can save you time and money and to get a special offer just for listeners of the show. From wondering, I'm David Brown and this business worse daily. Happy Monday, everyone the last remaining newspaper conglomerates are playing a furious game of chess and much like a real game of chess. It's not always easy to follow. What's happening who's buying whom who's selling the strategy seemed to change daily just last month? We reported that digital first media had made an unsolicited one point three billion dollar bid to buy Gannett, the nation's largest regional newspaper chain media observers and journalists everywhere raise alarm bells at that bid since digital. I has a reputation as a destroyer of newspapers that is layoffs. Typically, followed digital first acquisitions as the hedge fund owned company hollows out newsrooms in order to increase profits. But journalists got some good news last week when genetic officially said hell, no to the hostile takeover bid. At least the news seemed good. But while the rebuff. May have something to do with protecting journalism. The real reason nets board rejected the offer. It seemed too low by at least two dollars a share tough times for Gannett are hardly over. The company is searching for a new CEO in last month laid off about four hundred journalists it recently hired an investment banker and rumors are that it is now actively seeking a buyer, but it could also be considering acquiring another media company the bottom line digital. I move last month set off a merger frenzy in the ailing newspaper business, that's creating a sort of who's on first scenario that questions the future's not just of Gannett and digital I. But also of Tribune media and McClatchy newspapers. Now, if you can't keep up with the details, don't worry. It's the broader picture that's more important here. Slate published a deep analysis of media industry problems and surprisingly. Slates analysts say those difficulties didn't begin with the internet as many claim slate says the industry's issues began back in the nineteen eighties. When investors I began going into debt to buy papers an amer- with their high profit margins and seemingly infinite potential for growth. It's then that they should have invested in strengthening newsrooms, but didn't. And so when online competition showed up and ended newspapers local monopolies over their readers. Newspapers were already weakened Craigslist defectively killed classified advertising known as newspapers golden goose between two thousand and two thousand eight slate reports newspaper revenues dropped by sixty percent. The trouble is as we've said here before the newspapers serve two masters. Yes, they are in business to make money for shareholders, but many feel they are also fundamental to our democracy in January. Some two thousand journalists from Gannett, but also from a classy Huffington Post BuzzFeed and vice received pink slips or buyout offers. That's a lot of reporters and editors out of the small pool of remaining professionals, many of whom are trained to hold politicians and other leaders accountable. So the competition here is an only Gannett versus digital. I it may in fact, be democracy versus profits. From wondering this is business wars daily. We appreciate you listening. But usually when I'm planning travel for my family, I'm searching for the lowest fares and hoping I don't have to leave at five o'clock in the morning to get them. But there's a class of travelers for whom low fares are less important than luxuries. We're talking about corporate employees who travel a lot they tend to want privacy. High quality wine and spirits, a better than average chance at sleeping, and she she a meal, and they're willing to pay for it. Well, the country's biggest airlines want these high end travelers and they're going to great lengths to fight over them, particularly when it comes to long transcontinental flights witness United Airlines latest move. It's deployed the first Boeing Dreamliner to be used for nonstop coast to coast flights in this country. The Dreamliner officially the seventy seven ten is Boeing's largest plane, initially the Dreamliner will. Fly a handful of round trips from Los Angeles to Newark each week. The Dreamliner is huge it seats three hundred eighteen passengers including forty four in first class those first class passengers get Polaris seats, which reclined flat into six foot long beds. Well heeled customers are also plied with amenities ranging from noise cancelling headphones two meals made by celebrity chefs, those cushy extras aren't new to the airline business considered Elta which last year began offering its delta one cabins on some transcontinental flights first class. Amenities include beds that lie flat fancy toiletry kits and custom booked meals. Airlines are upping their luxury offerings for solid business reasons. Today we have Elizabeth done is a writer who focuses on food and dining. Uh, which sounds like a dream job. I I read about technology. I wish I could focus on food in dining, climbing a Yeah, It's not bad at their worst Pete. Thank So that is so what's so, what was the it was the career path for that you start out like reviewing like chicken and then go into uh, go into something fancier of right, like working your way up. I also I actually don't review. I usually write about tragedy send innovation and actually started out as business writer. Yeah. So. But this is a great segment of the business world to write about I think it's such a big part of the economy and it's just it's a It gets a really interesting topic. Everybody has, uh, has opinions about food. So I've been I've been looking into things that looks like so that the restaurant industries had its. Last year since two thousand eight and the couple of years. What what's happening? I mean, because w- where we all have to eat. Yeah, It's it's funny, the DEA, It is really kind of contradictory and so on, You've got on the one hand, people are actually spending a greater proportion of their food dollars on dining out than ever, uh, by its On the other hand, there's this glut of restaurants. I mean, if you think about the number restaurant options, you have basically anywhere in America today verses fifteen years ago. I mean, I live in New York, I think about New York. They're someplace new opening every single day. Uh, they're just too many restaurants, and even though people are sending more of their dollars towards dining out, It's not enough for everybody to be a winner anger. So what is a sewage Susan and very easy diverse, too? It's got taken off guard because that's really interesting. So is it a glut problem? Is there too much out there? Just like literally there's too many restaurants, What's what happened in the past a ex-number years that caused this? Yeah. I mean, there's been a lot of investment in restaurants, both in terms of just small individual investors who food got trendy, right? And if you think about. On the food network which launched Internet, but maybe 25 years ago, it that might not be right twenty five thirty years ago driving this interest in food. And so people used to invest in in big cities like New York in theater in productions. And then people started investing in restaurants. So you have you know, individuals funding, small independent restaurants at this enormous pace. And then you've also got, you know, private equity firms that are poor, our money into big chains. So really across the spectrum this, this glut is not just it's not just an independent tiny restaurants. It's not just in chains. It's kind of all across the board. The Times had a a story on the New York Times had a story on this on three weeks ago. That actually had talked about the the the sort of ratio of population to the number of restaurants in that it's just that ratio has changed tremendously in the past decade. So they're definitely just too many options And somebody will win, But there are going to be a lot of closures. You know, in the near future, If you're so big Is it doesn't make sense to open a restaurant now. Oh God, no To make It's funny, everybody went, Yeah. When you write about food, everybody asks you If you've ever thought about opening restaurant in what I always tell, people is the number one thing that I've learned writing about food who'd is that you should you should never your shirt on
