It's just crazy thing that we're watching in baseball right now and on paper each team is great but they've just underperformed all season and you know it's like parody in the worst way like who wants it. The least in the east is like the question. They got another series against the dodgers. Coming up here. They got another series against the giants. Coming up here this is. This is the teams got a hell of a road to make this playoff and they have to beat these teams to get in. The question is what can this team due to not lose any more ground. They've had so many injuries on the mound both on the bullpen side and the starting staff side. They've haven't really hit well as of late It seems like the entire city of san diego's completely turned on eric hosmer. It's just it. It seems like a really interesting time for the padres right now. All of that is true. At although i think lately starting pitching starting to come around the health has has returned. You've seen quality starts. I think in Four out of the last by may in five of the last five were guys have given innings. They have necessarily won. I mean blake. Snell had a perfect game through seven. Padres ended up losing that game four So Offense has been inconsistent But they do seem to be at least in my for my viewpoint playing a better brand of baseball. Here's what we've learned about this. 'cause we've been schedule started like this at the beginning of this month and we'll learn here early is that you still got a platies. Games has the the reds. Have an easy schedule. They lost two three to the marlins they lost two or three to detroit Who by the way is is not having a portable. You're like everybody thought. But there's certainly a team to read should be beating There are three and seven in last ten. And so the pie. They've had a chance to kinda put some separation between them in the padres. They weren't able to do so. Padres ended up getting a victory last night. They lose on the walk off so the padres are are one game up but they are going into the no. They don't play a team from this point on net isn't above. Five hundred isn't in playoff contention. They have the the giants are excuse. Me got the dodgers in this order. Dodgers giants Cardinals braves dodgers giants. That's how they ended the season right there so They've they've now. They've shown play their best baseball against those types of teams. They're going to have to do it in order to win this second wildcard spot and i'm excited for it. I think the city of san diego deserves it. And i man you just got understand fans out there. Petco park when that place is packed and the padres are good. That is the most electric place on planet earth. It is just so loud so loud and so much fun. I'm really really hoping the padres can hold onto this going to be staying. Well informed about the wildcard probably all the way to the final game of the season can't wait to see where this baseball season's gonna take us but one more we gotta talk about where we wrap it up. Let's talk a little bit about player spotlights because we've always talked about for years and i think about the ninety s growing up the first player. I think there's a fair amount of blame kind of be spread a decent amount all over the place but looking at what major league baseball the players that are in the game right now not to mention the young stars that are playing right now pita lonzo a guy you know. He hit his first. His has hundred home. Run the other day and it took kim the second fewest amount of games major league baseball history to do that like fernando tat junior twenty two years old having a monster. "I think it was yesterday. I was saying. I don't need to hear him say anything. Necessarily i need to know that he actually gets it because we've been down this road already with him before the in the raccoon stuff the fans booing it. What i heard from him yesterday. I believed i actually felt okay. I get you. He's frustrated because he basically came out and said nobody wants to be like this. I don't wanna start. Our relationship is going to be in for another ten years this to happen to me. I don't know what that was going on here. Nobody's ever booed me before. This is new to me but he took it the wrong way. But i think we're all on the same page. He wants to be loved by the fans. He wants to raise the city. He wants to win the fans in new york. Wanna love him. Want him to win. Want him to be the focal point and our team so he kind of admits it wasn't it wasn't the right thing. It was the wrong thing to do. I'm sorry by offended anybody. I did it. It's never really nasty. And on twitter on social media it becomes nasty. And i think that players come together and say these people on social media ripping us all day and lump the paying customers who go to city field or the media. Lump them all together where really. It's it's not one and the same. No it's in the people that are doing or is a very and i do believe this too is a small majority right. You know if that makes sense. I don't think it's everyone in the stadium. Yeah i mean the ones that do it. They're loud but there's many that just sit there and watch the game and to me silences. Deafening i mean. I think if you are urine happy you can. You can show your your Your animosity whatever. The right word is your pleasure for what you're seeing and a lot of different ways but the social media aspect because of what and this goes to a gary was talking about. I believe. I remember correctly the disconnect between the players and the media and the fans the fact. That the media's not. I mean he was great with the whole idea of. And you don't realize it until you hear him say those but he hasn't been in the mid clubhouse in two seasons who years since he's been in the clubhouse and while i don't think we notice because they're great i think gary ron keith or outstanding doesn't need to be set anymore. We all know that they feel a difference not being connected to the team the way they once were and we'll be again and so when you have that then you talk about the media on the zoom calls. Even keith was talking about. How if i was a player. Be enough with these conferences. And i gotta do this again. Annoying like i just want to be my locker. Come talk to me right. So there is a big disconnect and at the club. That's a big new sitting home in a dark stadium when the teams out in san francisco arable and then the idea of and we may not know it from experience with major league baseball teams but obvious even doing ruckers a columbia for sure when you travel with the team. There's a bonding that goes on there. Just as simple as that you learn a lot. Yeah of one hundred percent you learn. I mean even just in passing in the hallway and whatever it may be it feels totally different so for these guys were so used to traveling with the ball club every step of the way going in the clubhouse before the game you do so there is a little bit of disconnect there has to be and it was a lonzo right that shut down his social media for the other thing. I want to bring up. Now what would you do see for me. I think it's unhealthy to have that. You ought to shut it down. No no i think it's healthy to have social media especially in season necessary to do. They need it though. Why do they need it. you different. They they're making millions of dollars to professionals. I get that sometimes. You wanna connect with the fence. They really be if they want to get a message across could do it or have somebody else. Run their account. I would my guess would be someone in their camp telling them. Popularity is cash but there's pita lonzo's not he's not making he's not making thirty million dollars a kid but you're right. I mean well let me. This is a guy like. I'm sure there's a lotta guys making a ton of money on it but guy giancarlo stanton on twitter. I don't know. I don't believe he is if he is. "Have you know a lot of the shows. A lot of the network shows. They don't cover major league baseball. Which really rare when that's a that's a topic for you. That people around the country are interested in. Because if i'm going to be talking about something unless it's really specific and i know it's specific then i'm trying to have something that will appeal to a mass audience. You know where this show is on in nearly four hundred cities around america. You're trying to appease a lot of people with and more people would be interested in the patriots. Preseason game last night against washington then maybe the field of dreams game last night not fair to the sport. It's an exhibition. A preseason game but is mack jones going to start how cam newton look is washington's defense going to be one of the best in football we're going to check in with the patriots coming up here in a little bit and what we saw last night. How important those games are and then you got a whole slate of football games. Coming up baseball has its moment and it was a moment. It was the all star break because you had otani in the In the homerun derby had the game itself. Pita lonzo winning the homerun derby. But you know didn't use to be that way. Just football is taken up eleven months of the year and if they could take up twelve they would. It's almost like they let baseball have july or at least a couple of weeks like they. But i would say jordan love absolutely because i think when you think of the preseason his his performance here can tell you a whole lot about where the packers are with with aaron rodgers their quarterback for the future because i think if they knew a little more about jordan love this past year then maybe they make a different decision if they felt good about jordan love. I think there's still a big question mark with him. So what do you look for in those moments. Then like with jordan love out there because people a lotta time players analysts are like look if you're judging teams off the preseason you're crazy okay because as don't mean anything but you're looking at individual performances. How do you sort of separate that out the valuable stuff from the like well. Not so important. I like to see how teammates respond to you. When you're on the field your command are you in control. Are you getting the playoff on time. Does it feel like you. The game is coming to you like you're not trying to force things in there. How're your throws. So it's it's more of just. There's probably there's tangible 's but there's in intangibles is well leadership if you throw an interception. What do you do the next time you get on. "Transplant or something that he had on ice speaking of organs. My buddy jerry kale. I had liver and kidney transplant this weekend or two weeks ago. I talked to him last night. It's amazing so he had the double lung transplant. And because of all the anti rejection drugs that everything delivering the kidneys overworked and He got put to the top of the list because he was failing after his bike to breed them. Yeah he put himself on a bike and rode from new hampshire brooklyn. She's and then right after that it was like right into the hospital and the only reason i'm saying this because he's put it out there and he has an amazing amazing human being so he got a liver and kidney and i talked to him yesterday. Like man i'm doing great everything's fantastic. That's great yeah. I tell this story all the time. That forty mile bike tour when we were with jerry. I was like i haven't done this. Jerry's double lung transplant. A little older. I'll just hang with him the whole time me and him. We'll go because i didn't want overstressed myself soon. As soon as that gun went off you see him for four hours. You don't here's the thing with him. He lives life to the fullest. And he's all about what Jimmy johnson said and what jimmy johnson said was cutie. And i'm sitting out there going. What the hell's kjell me. Let me tell you about this first of all over the place. That's all we want. We want to compete. And when you tell somebody not to compete you're sending a horrific message and then of course there's a double plan the next back off right. "We got a fantastic show lined up for you guys here today a lot to talk about. Of course we had the home run. Derby play out the all star game finishing up the major league baseball draft so a lot going on across major league baseball. Even though there weren't any regular season games or action on the field still a ton to get into an attended discuss with you guys here today. So let's jump right into it. Let's talk about the home run. Derby i mean when electric television. This was out there at coors field and honestly just dive into the format of the home run derby and what a positive change. This has been over the past handful of years. I mean the change to the timing. Letting guys just swing. Swing swing is so much better than playing the ten out particular version that we grew up on for the home run. Derby were guys. Were taking pitches waiting for their perfect pitch trying to hit as many out as they can. At bats rounds would take fifteen minutes. Just because guys again didn't wanna swing at a bad pitch and make sure it turns into a home run and not a particular out so this new format has been fantastic. This started back in two thousand and fifteen back in cincinnati where the added the clock and ever since. Then it's been an absolute gem of an event. I mean back in two thousand fifteen. We saw reds third baseman. Todd frazier dramatically walk things off with cincinnati fans going nuts so the hometown kid in two thousand and fifteen won the event in. You're thinking hey man maybe we're onto something with this new format in two thousand sixteen. Jean carlos stanton put on an absolute show in petco park out there in san diego in two thousand seventeen marlin slugger just in bore please. The hometown crowd there in miami with twenty two home runs in the first round. Only see aaron judge come out moments later in storm through the gates with twenty three to eliminate him in the first round in what was an electric back and forth in two thousand and eighteen. Bryce harper walk things off in front of his hometown. Dc crowd at that particular time so the hometown kids certainly have themselves some fun. And it's been absolutely awesome to watch. I mean and twenty nine thousand nine. Maybe the best event of all time when it came to the home. Run derby vlad guerrero. Junior made history. He had a three swing off win over jock. Peterson in the semifinals to make the finals only to fall to pete alonso who walked him off in the finals so again two thousand twenty did not have a home run derby but fifteen through nineteen. We saw each of these events. Come down to the final swing. Come down to the very end and be absolutely awesome television and twenty twenty. One certainly did not disappoint. Having a great first half here and twenty twenty one leading that right into a great performance in the home run derby in the second match up of the night. You add number seven trevor story. Defeat the number two seed. Joey dalo by a score of twenty two nineteen and joey gallo getting eliminated in the first round. Certainly i had him winning the entire thing. And i wasn't alone in that particular prediction because he had come in one of the hottest hitters. Eleven home runs in his last. Fifteen or sixteen games coming into the derby. He has light tower power and honestly the hometown kid he got hot in the first round the energy of the crowd behind him and he was able to eliminate joey. Gallo there in the first matchup. Then you had number five. Pete alonzo go first and hit thirty. Five home runs which was a record for the first round. The most in the first round in the third most in any round of homerun derby history in jeff. You add up the distance of those thirty five home runs. You get just shy of three miles alone for pete alonso. So not only was he hitting home runs but he wasn't hitting any cheap once. I mean this guy was absolutely launching them into the crowd out there and salvador perez. He had a fantastic first round. He had twenty eight home runs but just happened to go up against the monster. That was pita lonzo so no thin sneeze with salvador perez hitting twenty eight homers but Alonzo just showed. He was here to be messed with in this derby. Next you had the match up the first round that pin number eight one soto against number one shohei otani and this one went to extra time then went to a three swing. Swing off with ultimately one soto advancing with thirty one home runs to shohei ohtani twenty eight and some people look at this. As a disappointment for otani everybody was tuning in to see what he can do and honestly he didn't disappoint even though he was eliminated in the first round. I mean honestly. He had his chances to win. Right knee tied sodo in the first round or the initial round because he had some time to ultimately win the event but over the past hour the last ten to fifteen seconds he was able to unable to launch one out of the park then went to a three swing swing off where sodo hit off three of his swings for home runs and that certainly spelled trouble for shohei ohtani. I swing rolled one over and ultimately was eliminated so one soto stepping up rising to the occasion rising to the challenge in sending home. Shohei ohtani though fans of otani's should not have been disappointed with his early exit just because again. He put on an absolute show in the first round in the second round. And then in the other semi-final matchup one soto against pete. Alonso we're one soda. Went first and it looked like he was a bit tire with fifteen home. Runs and alonzo was able to defeat him with some time remaining and he even wanted to keep going. He hit his sixteenth home run and he was like man keep on throwing them keep doing your thing bring him in here but ultimately we got to the finals. Then of pete alonso versus trae man seaney where manzini started things off with twenty two runs so a nice round again for trae manzini but pete lonzo. Oh my gosh this guy got hot and joe he's one of the best power hitters in the entire world right now and honestly watching this derby and knowing this now i have to remember it for next year when i talked to you guys about betting favorites but the pace of the swings and the home run derby itself lens the advantage to the guys who have the shorter more compact homerun swings like you have matt olsen and shohei otani who have a much more violent longer larger powerful swing and to have these guys go rapid fire swing rapid fire back and forth back and forth..

They're not actually concerned about who best baseball inning guy in the world his right they're concerned about selling a whole bunch of ford trucks or nike shoes or whatever. That's the whole point to a couple of breaking news stories. That are kinda interesting so the defense lawyers have have filings in court. Now their argument is do you remember when those the bearded lunatics claimed they were going to kidnap the governor of michigan. And take you to wisconsin and put on or something like that and then perhaps execute or maybe maybe not. i don't know but the the briefings have been filed in court and so this is now known. They're arguing that the fbi used at least twelve informants in the alleged plot and lead them that direction in induced or persuaded the defense to go along with the kidnapping scheme this reminds me of. I was always wondering this about the various terrorists that they arrested. You know in the years after nine. Eleven there always arrest in this guy that and they'd come across some lunatic. Who is you know On the internet is bedroom and they would be an fbi agent and start. Hey kinda interested in pulling off a plot oriented get a bomb and the next thing you know they want to get a bomb and they get a bomb and it's a fake bomb and they arrest him for getting a bomb and you just wonder you know how far down the road would. If if i'm sitting around reading a book or something and a friend proposes i mean. I'm trying to come up with the right metaphor. I think plato said that are of your ancient thinkers said that on the other hand one of my favorites is because it made me stop and think liberals want deal to be in control conservatives want republicans to be in control libertarians. "His career already and he'd be on pace to break his career high that he set back in twenty eighteen. He's the only guy in the major leagues with more than twenty this season. He doesn't strike out. He's only strike out twelve point seven percent of the time. Ten percentage points lower than the league average. he's walking seven percent of the time on base percentage of three thirty seven. Eight home runs in eighty three games this year which certainly makes him one of the best offensive weapons so far for kansas city. This year you'll on mon kedah. Third baseman for the white sox. I mean yes. Numbers are particularly flashy. But it's two point. Seven war is the highest among qualified position players to miss the all star game this year and it's higher than a considerable number of starters. I mean man. He's trimmed his career his strikeout rate to a career low at twenty five point eight percent. He's got his highest average jetta to eighty career-best four zero three on base percentage. And i mean gosh for the white sox. He's one of their best offensive players. So it's certainly interesting to see him being kept off this list. You have freddie peralta. Starting pitcher the brewers. I mean yes the national league. This year is ridiculously deep with pitching. So it certainly made sense. One of the top starters was gonna be left out from the rotation and the brewers already have two guys from their rotation being represented in the all star game but peralta is one of the best even though he's milwaukee's number three his two point. Two three era is seventh lowest in the national league among qualified starters. His hundred and twenty nine strikeouts his fourth most and so far only jacob degrom is holding opposing hitters to a lower batting average. Peralta is at one thirty two so far this season he's got walk rate of only eleven point five percent his home run rate nine point seven percent so again i mean you go with the top two guys from milwaukee one one guy certainly going to be left out but peralta any other year would absolutely be representing his team in the all star game. Y'all have max scherzer. Another starting pitcher from the national league. He's he spent a seven straight all star appearances. This breaks in impressive streak dating back to twenty thirteen and in twenty twenty one. He's been very good again. I mean he's averaging more than twelve strikeouts per nine innings. He's brought his walk rate down to two walks per nine innings. That's the third lowest of his thirteen year career. More impressively ziara is at two point one zero which a guy with three cy. Young awards is certainly very impressive. That would be his lowest mark ever for his career. He's gonna be thirty eight here soon and for a guy having the lowest dra of his career at the age of thirty eight again. That's somebody who should be on the all star team but just the depth in the national league. Pitching side of things made it extremely difficult for these guys to get on the squad. And then. Lastly i have justin turner of the dodgers. I mean again. The dodgers thir- absolutely loaded right. They got a bunch of guys who can make strong case clayton. Kershaw was left off the team. Kenley jansen was left off the team this year but turner who's only got one all star appearance in his career just seems like a guy. Who's this good. Should have more all star appearances than that. I mean again. Among qualified players only mon- kedah's as a higher war among position players mccain was at two point seven turner's at two point six. He's been a force offensively hitting two ninety five thirteen home runs. He only has fifty seven. Strikeouts to thirty nine walks. He's got a forty four point. Two hard hit rates which is the best of his career is average. Exit velocity is ninety one miles an hour so he certainly had an all star first half for the dodgers but the depth in the national league again. Leave some guys out when it comes to the mid summer classic. So let me know who you guys think should have made the all star team that maybe i left off this list. Who is the biggest snub that you guys ad that i leave anybody out but wrapping up all our all star segment here and segment number two talking about the homerun derby we now know who the final eight contestants are we have. We know all eight of them here when it comes to the derby we of course new shohei ohtani. We talked about him in great detail and segment number one. You also have pita lonzo who was listed we talked about trae manzini matt olsen of the oakland. Athletics was the last ones we know. But the final four. we're also recently released. We have trevor story of the colorado rockies. Sin how much longer are we going to say of the colorado rockies. He's one of the biggest rumored participants in the trade deadline coming up and we'll discuss that in a little more detail here in our fourth and final segment but the final three guys one soto of the washington nationals super excited to see one sodo in the homerun derby. I mean that guy's natural power is absolutely going to be on display when it comes to being in denver and being above sea level and just watching the ball fly. You also have. Salvador perez of the kansas city royals peres just continues to make all star team after all star team. And he's got some pop offensively so it's certainly going to be fun to watch. And then the last participation guy we got here is joey gallo. He announced he's got twenty. Twenty one home run. So far this season and it will be the eighth and final contestant so from the left side at the plate shohei ohtani matt olsen. One sotto joey gallo. I mean if you're getting tickets to this event you may want to get some in the third deck out there in right field and if you're in left field pita lonzo trevor. Sewri salvador perez trae manzini. It's an even split. Lefty righty here. So it's certainly going to be a ton of fun to watch. And i mean i don't know the bracket yet that ultimately who's going up against two but it's tough to bet again shohei otani and juan soto even with pita lonzo being a previous champion of the event. Robert gazelle machine comes on to pitch I battery faces. Hey, Seuss Aguilar. He strikes out. But then Ben gambled. Doubles Lorenzo Cain lined up to the second hour of the day intentionally walked Christian yelich to get to Mike loose dacas. Basell brings home the pitch and Mushtaq is ground.
