Pope Francis heals from a respiratory infection while the Vatican hopes to breathe new life into its relationship with Native Americans.

"On this week's AP religion roundup of France's heels from a respiratory infection, while the Vatican hopes to breathe new life into its relationship with Native Americans. An infant is comforted by his mother as Pope Francis baptizes him at the gemelli hospital in Rome. Francis spent most of the week there, healing from bronchitis and was expected to be released Saturday. Meanwhile, the Vatican tried to heal its relationship with native tribes in North America. This week it rejected the doctrine of discovery based on 15th century decrees that legitimized the colonial era seizure of native lands. This goes beyond land. Michelle Shenandoah is a Professor of indigenous law at Syracuse university and a member of the oneida Indian nation. She says the Vatican's rejection of the doctrine should prompt governments like the United States to address past abuses. It really has created generation upon generation of genocidal policies directed towards indigenous peoples. Native groups have called on the Vatican to formally rescind the papal bulls that provided the Portuguese and Spanish kingdoms, the religious backing to expand their territories in Africa and the Americas for the sake of spreading Christianity. Those decrees underpin the doctrine of discovery, a legal concept coined in an 1823 U.S. Supreme Court decision, which was cited by the high court as recently as 2005. The repudiation of the doctrine marked a historic recognition of the Vatican's own complicity in colonial era abuses committed by European powers. Truly, it has been decades that indigenous peoples have been asking for attention to this. Father David McCallum says the post visit to Canada last year opened up a new opportunity to address the church's relationship with Native American tribes. This captured not only the Pope's attention, but also the wider Vatican's attention. Indigenous leaders welcomed the statement as a good first step. Even though they hoped the Vatican would acknowledge greater culpability for historic abuses. I'm Walter ratliff.

Pope Francis calls for peace on the anniversary of the War in Ukraine, Southern Baptists oust Saddleback Church over women pastors, and Iranian clerics say harsh crackdowns were a mistake.

"On this week's AP religion roundup, Pope Francis calls for peace on the anniversary of the war in Ukraine. Southern Baptist cut ties with saddleback church over women pastors, and Iranian clerics say harsh crackdowns were a mistake. The bells of saint Michael's church chimed at midnight in Ukraine's capital city to mark the beginning of the war one year ago. Pope Francis marked the anniversary of the war this week by appealing for a ceasefire and warning that Russia will never achieve true victory built on rubble. The Southern Baptist convention has disfellowshipped its second largest church for having a woman pastor. Saddleback is the renowned California mega church founded by pastor Rick Warren. The vote by the SBC's executive committee culminates growing tension between the nation's largest Protestant denomination, which officially opposes women as pastors and a congregation that has been one of the biggest church growth success stories of modern times. In 2021, Warren ordained three women has pastors, which began prompting discussions within the denomination to consider expelling the mega church. The executive committee also voted to oust 5 other congregations for over the issue of women as pastors and one over the issue of sexual abuse. Some Iranians and the sacred city of comb, a center of Shiite Muslim shrines and scholarship are quietly calling on the country's ruling clerics to reconsider how they deal with unrest. Clerics like Abu zar saw have desire on, say, the harsh crackdown was a mistake. "On this week's AP religion roundup, religious groups respond to the earthquake in turkey with prayers and action and Christian advertising makes a play for Super Bowl viewers. Muslims in Indonesia held special prayers Friday afternoon for earthquake victims in turkey and Syria. The service came four days after an earthquake hammered a sprawling border region that is home to more than 13.5 million people. In the city of antakya, historically known as Antioch, members of the olive branches Israeli government rescue team held a short burial service for members of the Jewish community killed in the quake. Pope Francis said Wednesday that he's praying for those affected by the devastating 7.8 magnitude earthquake. Super Bowl Sunday is advertising's biggest night, but faith rarely makes an appearance among the beer and fast food commercials. But this year, an ad campaign is promoting Jesus with the $20 million he gets us campaign. AP and FL writer rob mati says a group that includes wealthy Christian boosters is using the biggest megaphone TV marketing money can buy to spread the word. Their message really is to share Jesus as well as in compassion for people to the world. And they've organized a $1 billion campaign and they're going out there and doing everything they possibly can to share this message, whether it's through sports on commercials, whether it's at events, they're here at the Super Bowl in Arizona. Madi says Christianity has long permeated NFL culture and regular fans are accustomed to expressions of faith. Every week, every game we see players who get on a knee hold hands and pray in a circle at midfield or somewhere close to it. Opponents from both sides and it happens every week, but we don't highlight it. We don't see that on camera as often. But he gets those campaign is funded by hobby lobby CEO, David green, and other anonymous donors. "On this week's AP religion roundup. Pope Francis makes a historic trip to Africa and psychedelic churches are pushing the boundaries of law and religion. Pope Francis made a plea for peace in South Sudan as he began a mission Friday to the world's youngest country. Francis cited years of war and clashes on the eve of his arrival that killed 27. The overwhelmingly Christian South Sudan gained independence from the majority Muslim sedan in 2011, along with Civil War, flooding and other calamities have displaced more than 2 million people there. The Pope's visit to South Sudan follows his visit to the Democratic Republic of Congo. A highlight of his Congo visit was a rally in Kinshasa, where Francis led 65,000 young people in a rousing denunciation of political corruption. That Bill also increases teacher pay and benefits at a time when Utah is dealing with a teacher shortage. From the Vatican, Pope Francis has clarified his recent comments about homosexuality and sin. As correspondent Sarah nafa reports, the pontiff was saying he was merely referring to official Catholic moral teachings that any sexual act outside of marriage is a sin. Francis recalled that even his black and white teaching is subject to circumstances that might eliminate the sin altogether. Francis first made the comments in an interview January 24th with The Associated Press, in which he declared that laws criminalizing homosexuality were unjust and that being homosexual is not a crime. His comments calling for the decriminalization of homosexuality were hailed by LGBTQ advocates as a milestone that would help end harassment and violence against LGBTQ persons. His reference to sin raised questions about whether he believed that merely being gay was itself a sin. Some 67 countries or jurisdictions worldwide criminalized consensual same sex activity. 11 of which can or do impose a death penalty. Catholic teachings forbids gay marriage, holding that the sacrament of marriage is a lifelong bond between a man and a woman in his decade long pontificate, Francis has upheld that teaching, but has made outreach to LGBTQ people a priority. He is stressed a more merciful approach to applying church doctrine. I'm Sarah. America

"Pope Francis, he had been delivering his final audience of the year and surprised people who had gathered their listening to him when he brought up his predecessor, former Pope Benedict XVI, said that he was very ill and he asked members of the Catholic Church to say a special prayer for him. The Vatican confirmed that the former Pope's health had been deteriorating in recent days. They said the situation was under control for now that that doctors are closely monitoring the situation. It's unclear what exactly the former Pope is dealing with. We know Benedict is 95 years old, so certainly age is a factor there. And he is, of course, remembered for being the first Pope in 600 years to step down as Pope, so he became the first Pope emeritus. He had cited his old age back in 2013 when he stepped down. He had said he didn't feel he was physically or mentally fit to keep going as leader of the Catholic Church. So his health had been a concern back then. It is a concern once again, but we're still still waiting to hear more from the Vatican. I will point out the Italian news agency ansa reported today that the Pope's health had been declining since Christmas since before Christmas in the days leading up to Christmas and that he was suffering from respiratory problems, but the Vatican has not confirmed that as of now. Now typically when we lose a pulp, the very first thing people are thinking about is picking a successor. But in this case, that's not the case. And so is there plans for a memorial or honoring Pope Benedict when he does pass away? That's right, that's what's so unusual about this situation is you're right in the past when Pope's health began to deteriorate. We start talking about who could be the successor. I mean, we just saw Pope Francis recently, there were concerns about his health. We had appeared in a wheelchair recently and there was some speculation that he might step down or that somewhere fearing the worst for him. But in this case, we already know who successor is. It's Pope Francis. So we won't have the Cardinals gathering to figure out who the new Pope should be. So that'll make this very unusual, but we will certainly see memorials and celebrations being held when Pope and dick does pass. They will point out that Pope Benedict and Pope Francis actually had quite a relationship Benedict lives on a Vatican browns still, you know, he spent Christmas there. And he would meet occasionally with Pope Francis, so they had very different ideologies, Pope Francis's liberal ideology, whereas Pope Benedict was more conservative, so he had to come out to condemn things like gay marriage or the ordination of women, but they had appeared together a number of times. And in fact, the last time we saw Pope Benedict photographed was at a Vatican event. So even though he's essentially retired and he's more behind the scenes position, he's still, I don't want to say he's active, but he's still around and certainly does maintain a relationship with Pope Francis. And we know that Pope Francis actually recently went to see Pope Benedict. Yeah, I think it's pretty cool too because Pope Francis has somebody he can talk to. He can get advice from something that no other Pope has been able to do in 600 years. That's right. That's certainly what's so fascinating about this. And so it was really powerful to see Pope Francis actually calling for prayers for Pope Benedict because they do have a personal relationship. So this is historic. It's uncharted territory. We haven't seen this happening in 600 years. It'll be interesting to see what Pope Francis says in the coming days how he reacts given that he has a personal relationship with Pope Benedict and of course people around the world praying for Pope Benedict to get better, but he is 95 years old. So in March, you took a cradle board to Pope Francis and presented him with a challenge to the Vatican, is the Pope delivering on that challenge. Well, we have yet to see, I was one of the delegates they served in position as a female spiritual adviser with the delegation and was one of the last persons to address the Pope in a private audience with the there were three different delegations and the one I was a part of was the first nation delegation. So that was I brought the cradle board in with me and provided provided the Pope with the opportunity to reflect upon all of the lives of the children were lost at residential schools. And to really consider the devastating impacts that have happened to all of our people and not only in Canada, but throughout the Americas. And to really sort of go back to the source of where this position, the church is taken and given access for the world to kind of take this position of superiority over our people over the lands and make determinations about us with without being really consultation with us at all as I've called it a long process of genocide. And that's bringing us back to the peoples that make up the doctrine of discovery. So within my address to the Pope was the presentation of this cradle board that I asked him to reflect on overnight and that I would come back the following day to retrieve the cradle board to be symbolic of us bringing

"This is national native news. I'm Antonio Gonzalez. The Inuit circumpolar council is holding its General Assembly this week on Wednesday delegates from the ICC's for member nations, her to report on how the organization has addressed food security among Inuit communities over the last four years. Emily schwing reports. The ICC is a non governmental organization that represents more than a 180,000 Inuit across the Arctic, including in Alaska, Canada, Greenland, and chukotka in the Russian far east. Natan obed is the head of Canada's delegation. We have some of the highest rates of food insecurity in the world between 60 and 70% in each of our Inuit regions. And we know that we need to do much more to ensure that innovate have enough food to eat. The delegations from Alaska and Canada developed the food sovereignty and self governance project to examine and better understand food sovereignty issues. The Alaskan delegations cultural sustainability adviser Verne angna bugak presented findings from the project to the ICC. The food sovereignty and self governance project builds upon the recommendation from the food security report where authors noted that a key threat to our food security is the lack of decision making power and management Vivian Cortes is the head of Alaska's ICC delegation. She noted that a changing climate has a heavy impact on food systems security. We are seeing immense changes in the oceans and on our rivers and in our land and weather, our animals in the regions that we live in are changing. They're moving around differently. We have experienced salmon crashes in our region and the impact of that is not just one or two years. It's going to be for generations. The ICC holds a General Assembly every four years. Because this year's meeting format is a hybrid in person and virtual meeting due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Leadership has opted to report on the progress made since its last meeting in 2018. Alaska will hand over its chairmanship to Greenland at the close of this year's meeting. For national native news, I'm Emily schwing. This story is supported by the climate justice resilience fund. Native American businesses and indigenous artists recently showcased their work in billings, Montana, Yellowstone public radio's Kayla deroche went to the first at big sky in digi fest, where one business owner talked about Native American made products. I love sweetgrass. Luanne belcourt holds up a C shaped braid of dried grass tied at each end. We grow it in we use every morning to pray. This is my favorite bell court and her daughters run creations. Selling items like healing boxes that include sweetgrass for smudging, jewelry, and tea. We only sell products that are made by Native Americans. Belcourt says her daughters are artists, like her mother was. She recalls growing up and seeing items manufactured abroad, and meant to look Native American. That's not Native American. You know, we have our own way of making things and we have our own philosophy behind some of the things we make. Bell court says it's critical for Native American creators and businesses to support and promote each other. The organizers of big sky in digi fest hope to make it an annual event. In billings, Montana, I'm Kayla deroche for national need news. And I'm Antonio Gonzalez.

"That father reese feels is in short supply in the church today. Yes exactly and and the pope has appointed many of these prelates to to these positions who do follow those sort of Reformist positions and that that certainly is the case. with the with cardinal holler. He's he's also supportive expressed the sutton sympathy towards ending will ending the man celibacy mandate for for priests but at least openness to that as well And and Other things very much. Some consistent with pope francis but this is a very important position that he's that he's being appointed to because the general related of the senate tends to be basically the one who runs the senate very quite influential. Cardinal cloudier whom is ryan ran. This the amazon's senate in two thousand nineteen and was really Everything went according to his wishes at least in the run-up to it during although not in the final document so So they do have quite a lot of influence and they're also seem to seem to be stepping stones to the papacy in cases cardinal. Wate were karate. Were and cardinal. Joseph ratzinger both being general related to and of course they became a jumbled a second than bennett and so there is so there is that in that that could be a sign that he could be. Also papa in the future before we run out of time It was thought that the pope's document on some more on pacifica m- that that would touch on the traditional latin mass might be released this week. you'll remember. It was pope benedict just to remind the audience who liberated that old mass allowing any priest. Say it at any time with no permission at all needed from the local ordinary. This new document by pope francis could change that. Are you hearing. that's in the offing it. Yes i mean there's talk about it possibly coming out tomorrow and friday with that's not being confirmed but it does seem to be imminent What i'm hearing is in its third draft and that that it's third draft also says that it could be included the fact that does in clergy might have to get permission from the bishop all the holy see in order to celebrate the traditional latin mass. Which of course would be quite a difference to the to what was in some more which has been the which said that if you if a staple late group wants it to have the mass. They just need to ask priest and the bishop would have to comply basically where you're talking about. Here's a return to the inbuilt mass. Which was any priests that wanted to celebrate the old latin right. The roman rite had to get permission from his local ordinary. We may be returning to that situation. It could well. Yes and as i said that would be ready cutting back. What's more important. It had been advocating on a stressed and that was the key part of that which was very much liberal liberalizing. The the traditional added mass. Yeah and i'm puzzled before i let you go. Why why even poke this bear if you will. You know there are traditionalist. There are a lot of young people who've gravitated to the old mass. A lot of young priests who are learning both rights and benedict's vision..

"Ed pope francis has now appointed the lion's share of the college of cardinals who will vote to elect the next pope. You've written a book about this so considering the glacial pace of the vatican changes have been pretty fast and furious. What is trying to say between the lines here. Well i think he feels that the general culture and the vatican and in the hierarchy generally has not changed that. It's still very much. The hierarchy is still very much of benedict john. Paul the second in terms of their approach to to the judge and the governance the church instead they feel and also undocumented cases and so they feel that he fails and others like him feel that the pace doesn't mean fast enough and in fact he says does he say that taty made a dent in that What it calls the clerical establishment now others would beg to different feel that The has been quite a dent and and that has been quite serious changes also within the hierarchy as you say. The pope has appointed The the majority in the college of cardinals So so his successor will be elected by them and they will certainly be sympathetic to to him and suddenly dicey position is called to him. We'll we'll probably vote. According to his wishes and we know kind of vaguely how the pope his sutton favorites within the college but with the conclave is always a surprise. Then you just do not know Who they got for on the day. Certainly if it's a few is off yet coudl be. Do you get the feeling. This is an opening salvo to lobby for the kind of man that who is obviously. A progressive believe is needed to succeed. Francis is that what this is jockeying for position in the next conclave. Before it's even begun. I think that's possible. Yes i think there is. There's always that before conclave. And suddenly when the pope gets ill there's some sort of medical issue then this discussion always stop. And there's always a sort of guessing game of of who could be the next pope. And and as you say a certain jockeying for position that does seem to have started in in a certain way as as that article showed but also there are other examples to also that sandra magister referred to an article on his in his column. This week Regarding to books have been written which he's he believes also point to To the next conclave. Even though they don't talk about it he said that the very much That signal that giving in these two books one written by andrea riccardi. Who's the founder of the studio community and very close to pope francis. Now well my take is personally just watching this and reading many of the things you. You're referencing there. My take is. This is all premature. The pope himself. Pope francis thought he was going to have a four five year pontificate. I know a number of cardinals who had the same idea when they elected him. But he's beating the clock and the odds here. I mean you have to say that. Yes no i agree and and he seems to be still full of energy and still able to To continue these reforms that he started. So i think it is. I agree with you. i think it is rather premature. I think there's plenty more to come..
