"Be an issue. Watch for roads to be slick, coming temperature 45 degrees here. Come on. This is great to see this one follow up to a story here. A coma news of fund raising event was put together to support street musicians in the downtown area. We were speaking of the pike Place market. So much talented people. In fact, if you're familiar with the artist Jule This is where she started. She used to play down around the market there in living in her car. During the pandemic. This fund is now like $7000 has been raised. The idea was to give out between 102 $100 to each of the Artists here who were told to stay away as a precaution against Cove in 19, the two musicians who started the fun decided to donate the last $100 to the Pike Place Market Foundation to support vendors and business owners as they cope with the downturn. The success of the funds is an example of how the market community pulls together with each other here, a great effort to see that to Kathy Casey, local chef has a feature here on coma, called dishing with Kathy Casey got some ideas here with maple syrup on excited for this is a kid. Maple syrup on everything. I'm not kidding fact they used to call me Marquis Maple. When I think of maple syrup. I can't help but think of warm and fuzzy slipper memories, especially around breakfast. So where does this sweet elixir come from? The mighty sugar Maple Tree and Quebec is by far the largest producer of the sticky syrup generating 70% of the world's supply. Thanks, Canada. There are several grades of syrup, each with their own flavor, profile and characteristics. But maple syrup isn't just for breakfast and desserts. That's right. Maple syrup is delicious in savory dishes, too. Add it to a pot, a slow simmering baked beans in a salad vinaigrette or even a marinade. It's also great in a whiskey old fashioned or used as a sweetener for fresh lemonade, so branch out and discover all that maple syrup has to offer. For more delish maple syrup, ideas and recipes. "I've done everything I can for you have to help me out when the city really rallied and you saw signs up on all the houses instead of iHeart Blue Goose. I would say I it was an apple apple glucose. Anyway that I rallied his ass off. I mean the guy the guy anything you could he was up with two of them were working in markets and buying fruits vegetables and he always has hand sanitizers and toilet paper. Nobody else did he was out there pounding the pavement and he had it in his customers rallied form, but it was really interesting and I were in there last Thursday what we saw. He sells ice cream from the local ice cream shop. He sells fresh hummus from Eden on the river which is a wonderful restaurant in Saint Charles. So what's happening is the retailers in the community are getting together in their cross-merchandising. They're looking for ways to support one another instead of just you know, hey, Jason your stores on your own and he reached out to your buddy Emily. I don't know I'll see you on this is over there looking for new revenue streams by by bonding together. Anyone or right? Yeah, and you know, we had a similar story that we featured we started this series called behind the business where we were just talking to different businesses in different Industries. When covid-19. What are you doing? And there was this food tour group in Seattle who always started in Pike Place Market, they would kind of hit up a few places there and they would go see some cool famous spots in the city, but it was like walking tours, you know, right when this happened obviously all their revenue is just like hemorrhaging and refunds to anyone that had anything planned for the the tourism season and they decided to go to these vendors from Pike Place and say, hey, we're going to put together a Pike Place box office will deliver it to people all in the Seattle area. It'll have wires from this vendor cheese spender, right? Yeah, so they do that they are getting hundreds and hundreds of hours. Need to do a box program that you can mail. So now you can ship it across the country depending on where it's going. They have different things available if it'll travel in the heat Etc, but am not only have been able to bring some of their tour guides back to work and pack these boxes..

How to Introduce Customers to Specialty Coffee
"In order for specialty coffee to land and become exciting and accessible. You have to do that. Make it accessible so We created intentionally a blend that works very well in milk. It is not overly sour is not overly crazy is not overly fruity it is a very balanced and delicious. Cup of coffee that anybody in the world could grab onto. Now you might be in love with coffee and be like. That's not what we should do. We shouldn't share. Just a coffee is balanced in great with the with the world we need to share with them. The most exciting coffee I'm so passionate about coffee. If you do not create a connection point for people who do not care about the nuances of a natural or a Kenyan coffee or an Ethiopian. Coffee. You will never get them to a place where they're open to try those coffees. So what we did is we created something that was just different enough from that dark roasted Pike's place or Major Dickinson's or whatever the case and we made it just a little. Bit, more nuance, and we drew out these flavors and we made milk drinks that tasted unlike anything they had had before just addicting and delicious to drink, and we made it easy for people to try that. Why if they came in and you could tell they were disinterested or afraid to try the coffee, we offer them a first time on us or we said, give it a try. You don't like it. I'll make you anything else you want and you have to be willing to be adaptable. This is all with the pretense that you care enough about the long play that you want your specialty coffee company to. Survive. If you are comfortable with potentially taking a long slow road, you can be ice cold and only offered the basics. Black coffee only super fruity coffee only only light roasts, etc etc.. That can work in there's absolutely nothing wrong with that. But if you want to bring specialty coffee to a place that has never have it had it before you must bring it with grace and care, and you must look through the guests is if everybody is telling you that your coffee isn't good because X, Y and Z. It's okay for you to know that your coffee is good and the guests do not understand yet. What is not okay for you to ignore everybody who comes through your doors and ask for something else it's especially sad if people tell you that they would prefer to come to your shop, but you don't offer something that they love. So my advice to anybody starting especially coffee in a place that has never seen specialty coffee is to start small. meaning. A bunch of safe coffees blended, maybe slightly darker roasted, and then give yourself a couple of banger exciting coffees will happen over time as people will fall in love with you and your group if you give amazing service in a safe atmosphere. If you do that. People will fall in love with you. They will not your coffee's good. They will notice that it's a trusted source of something that is great. They'll come back for the dark. They'll come back for the simple comeback for the bounce, and as that happens day after day after day, you need to show that you are drinking something different than them and you're excited about it do not force it down their throats but you do this and they will respond over time.

Looting and fires continue in downtown Seattle as protests turn violent
"Nick tell us where you are and what you can see well it since about three this afternoon we've been here in the west like pause over near Westlake park and behind us you can see still demonstrators that have been we're essentially the epicenter of this entire day going to began with all this frustration at being pent up against law enforcement over at fifth and behind those car fires obviously been put out but Kane county sheriffs and tactical gear made their way through the area just I'd say about ten minutes ago but right now it seems that a lot of people just been standing around and have just been continuing to demonstrate despite many people moving on to different locations all we've seen a couple different businesses being broken into the doc martens on fourth Avenue we saw people running in there about five or six people but aside from that and the gap store over at the corner of fifth and pine demonstrators continue to just stand down and protest and show their frustration over what's happened with what happened in Minneapolis and several other different locations obviously a lot of frustration continues to grow and people continuing to want to demonstrate that whether it's on TV or whether it's here on the streets of Seattle on but either way and this is been the scene that we've been seeing for I'd say the last ten fifteen minutes with only a couple walking away you could see people walking away with a mannequin pieces of mannequins and also came from stores it's it's it's been quite a scene in the last twenty to thirty minutes you're located at Westlake center that's where the rally he organized a rally was held it was supposed to be peaceful there are pastors people speaking on the stage so from where you are right now from the vantage point where you are at any sort of organized assembly it's over now correct yeah there there is no organized assembly that that ship sailed a while ago in this area they have that organized protests that happened from at Westlake park but as soon as that March when all they had made their way away from this area and I was to ride out where that fire had taken place spent lining up all right up against those demonstrators who are still here over at fifteen point Nick thank you very much I'm gonna ask your camera man if I can to zoom in back over to the right Justin this down being saying we just saw moments ago a group of people walking through downtown Seattle with legs and arms of mannequins that they've stolen from looting in the store there's an obscene gesture Fauria but really an astounding and just incredibly sad thing to see that is happening in downtown Seattle tonight you mentioned the doc martens store looted the north face store looted the Old Navy store was looted earlier tonight the poly clinic set on fire police vehicles burned and it we've talked most of the night about these two separate groups there was the peaceful protest the peaceful demonstration speeches made our prayers prayed that's all said and done what's happening now from here on out the people that are downtown now or are there I'm guessing for reasons of raging of violence of looting and pillaging the downtown core of Seattle and this is going to be interesting to see if and when the National Guard gets here how they're going to put a stop to that the mayor said the National Guard should be in place sometime tonight and this is an unarmed National Guard coming in possibly if necessary to protect citizens it's also interesting to note that earlier when protesters and demonstrators and riders were marching towards the police precinct there was a line of police officers protecting that building just an hour ago mayor Jenny Durkan addressing the city she said quote we will take all steps necessary to protect residents and property in the city but Eric as you mentioned we have seen live images of people actively looting vandalizing stealing from the downtown shopping corridor and this live look right here right now so bold maybe this is where Nordstrom is near right near Pacific place a couple blocks away from pike place market we have yet to see police activity protecting the stores or standing guard to protect the property in the downtown area on those police are stretched so thin because these groups have splintered off into several different areas and of course they have they have set up a line around police headquarters are trying to protect that they are trying to protect the stores and and the citizens but they are stretched so thin at this point but it's almost impossible without some more help and again I'm worried about when darkness comes here in another hour hour and a half what's going to happen under the cover of darkness as as this chaos continues in downtown Seattle again the speeches have been spoken in the prayers have been prayed in the protests have been protested now this is ugliness in our city this is sheer chaotic ugliness and we can only hope that order is restored just as soon as

Coronavirus Latest: Testing Challenges And Protecting At-Risk Elderly
"Hey everybody emily here so obviously. The biggest story in science is the corona virus and rising cases of its disease cove in nineteen. In the coming weeks. We're going to cover it a little more with regular updates on the latest news and science and today to help us do that. We are lucky to have not one but two colleagues from the NPR science desk correspondent Nell Greenfieldboyce. Hainault Hi Emily and correspondent John Hamilton page on high so krona virus. It's already impacting American society. And you're each going to focus on one part of the Krona virus story this week. Now why do you got for us? So one of the things I've been thinking about a lot is who is most at risk of severe illness from this virus and while there's a lot we don't know about exactly how deadly it is overall. We do know there are some things that we need to do for the most at risk people to keep them safe yes and John. You're recently in Washington state in Seattle. Which is the site of one of the biggest outbreaks in the nation? Votes rate is where the first use case of corona virus appeared back in January. Now it has hundreds of cases dozens of deaths and no efforts to slow down. The Corona virus have have really largely. Shut down the entire Seattle area. It's not quite a ghost town but it's pretty quiet there all right so in this episode. We'll talk about all of that efforts to get tested for the virus up and running in Washington state amid the slow roll out of testing kits by the Federal Government. And how we can help people who might be the most vulnerable to the virus. Okay now before. We dive into some of the details from the week. What's the latest on the virus and it spread and I should say we're taping on Thursday morning and things are moving. Pretty fast they are they are. I mean just in the past twenty four hours. There have been some pretty dramatic developments and you can kind of feel a shift. In tone as the nation grapples with this president. Trump has this travel ban for visitors from Europe that he unveiled in an Oval Office address the NBA has suspended its season here in the US in Germany. You've got soccer leagues just playing to empty stadiums. Even Tom Hanks and his wife announced that they had corona virus. And so you can see as testing increases cases across the. Us are going up. There's this real sense that things are accelerating here and people are paying attention in a new way. Yeah and we should say that neither of US actually here in the studio with us right now. Yeah so I'm feeling sick with the kind of sickness that like normally you might sort of like you know take some cold drugs and go to work but like these days they say to stay home so I'm staying home will. I'm feeling fine but because I was around people who might have been exposed to the virus during the time I was reporting in Seattle I have been encouraged to stay home for a couple of weeks just to make sure I'm not contagious. So now I want to ask you. Oh I hear a dog. Yeah that would be. This is Bella. Bella Bella has been wanting to be on shortwave for most of my life. This was an opportunity and she sees did so John Yourself Quarantine Nell. You're keeping yourself home to make sure you don't get anyone sick. You're both so responsible. Thank you So John. We mentioned earlier that Seattle. It's the center of something called a community outbreak. There's a few of those right now in the US. Tell us what that means. All it really means is that the virus is spreading in the general population. Right so in Seattle you know the first case was brought in from China and then there were a bunch of cases related to a single nursing home but those are both sort of isolated. Now it's all over the place so while I was in Seattle. I saw the public health system stop focusing on tracing individual cases. Start looking at clusters of cases and they are also emphasizing community wide efforts to slow down the spread so that Seattle's response and hosts a little more of what it all looked like when you were there. He used to live in the Seattle area. And I never saw the traffic so light as I did the past ten days at rush hour on I five you know. It was a breeze and a couple of days ago I was. I was walking through Seattle's Chinatown the Pike Place Market. These are both big tourist areas and it was strangely quiet. A lot of the restaurants were closed. There were signs explaining that Kobe. Nineteen is the reason and I should also say people's behavior Seattle has changed You know they keep their distance. They wash their hands. I passed a couple of bars that were still open. And you could see people sitting there but it was every other barstool. Yeah our people trying to get tested for corona virus in Seattle. Yeah definitely I mean everybody wants to be tested in a whether the symptoms or not and the problem is it is really taken a while to set up the system to provide all that testing. And why is that? Well you know my my colleague. Richard Harris has been reporting on that and one reason he's found is that testing for the kroner virus. It's not that simple. You have to extract viruses from samples taken from patients. Then you have to use this device that creates lots of copies of the virus. Then you need another instrument that looks to see if the virus is a genetic match with the corona virus so this is something that is sophisticated lab can do but a doctor's office really can't and John. Why is testing so important with a couple of reasons is really important? It's how you pinpoint an outbreak. You need it for contact tracing because you have to know somebody has it to go and look for other people who might have got it from them and later on as as things spread it tells you which communities are getting infected that sort of the point where Seattle for instance is right now within Seattle. What areas is the virus showing up and finally it tells you what percentage of people who have symptoms actually have corona virus if percentage were to go up over time. It would tell you that you're not winning but the testing is what gives you clues that allows you to follow the spread phillies have a trail. You now what do you think about that? I think it's interesting. It's a different way of thinking about diagnostic testing than most people. Normally think about it. Like normally you feel sick you go to the doctor. And the reason you're getting a test is so the doctor can determine your treatment like maybe you have strep throat in that. Means you need antibiotics. But in this case we have no proven antiviral treatment against this new virus. We don't have vaccine. All the treatment is basically the same kind of supportive treatment you would give someone with another respiratory virus. So it's kind of weird situation. Where the testing that sort of everyone's clamoring for is really of most use for protecting the community and giving public health workers information about what they need to do on a community-wide basis rather than individual patient basis. Yeah and initially the CDC. It wasn't even permitting private labs and universities to do testing that dramatically reduced available capacity for testing. But that's changed recently right. It has and now certain labs so called high complexity labs are they are allowed to run their own tests. But that's not really actually the biggest problem. The biggest problem is setting up the system to collect samples for testing because they have to be sent in for a lab. You don't want people to sort of descend on some doctor's office or a clinic where they might spread the disease yet. You have to test a lot of people really quickly so one solution I saw. Seattle is What they call drive through testing. It's something that they used in Asia and the idea is that you can get tested for corona virus without leaving your car and I actually spent a morning watching this happen. I it was in one of these multilevel level. Parking lots you know next to a hospital in northwest Seattle. So the morning I was there a nurse named Jeff. Cates would walk up to each car. He was in full protective gear. You know with the disposable gown the Globes a clear plastic face mask and he would greet each person as they arrived by name. Jeff and then play health. Now we're going to be doing your swabs today. So he takes these these two swabs one from each nostril. Lean your head back with a little so you know he. He collects these samples and seals them up in plastic tubes and they will be processed by a lab. That's only a few miles away so we're going to be testing for flu. Ab IN SV when we're also testing for covert wriggles. Back to you as soon as we can. Thank you feel better soon now. Only healthcare workers are being tested his way right now but it's important because they're the people that are on the frontlines of fighting the virus and so you gotTa make sure they're not sick still they don't take the infection to other staff or patients in healthcare system. Also there has been talk of expanding this kind of drive through testing to for instance first responders who might have been in contact with somebody who had the virus and eventually even to

closing of of businesses businesses and and schools schools Gottlieb Gottlieb did did offer offer reassurance reassurance saying saying quote quote we'll we'll get get through through this this another another former former democratic democratic presidential presidential candidate candidate is is endorsing endorsing Joe Joe Biden Biden in a video on Twitter California senator Kamilla Harris threw her support behind the former vice president saying quote I believe in joke we need a leader who really does care about the people and who can therefore unify the people and I believe Joe can do that and with us right now was ABC news political analyst Steve Roberts Steve what a difference a week makes it did you anticipate Joe Biden picking up this mode the momentum this quickly no I have not I don't think anybody did I I think what we're what we're seeing though is a fascinating phenomena based on one word and that word is fear it's fear of Donald Trump and fear of Bernie Sanders Joe Biden has not been reborn as some useful charismatics move talking energetic candidates Joe Biden today is still the same Joe Biden that people have a lot of doubts about two weeks ago two months ago two years ago the difference is that Democrats have so desperate so frantic to find somebody who can beat Donald Trump that they decided that day either as a group and individually as voters and as candidates they'll camel Harris being an example of of having to rally around somebody and then choosing between Biden and Sanders the fear of Bernie Sanders is pulling the party too far to the left so there's a lot of energy around the Biden candidacy right now but in my view it's largely negative energy it's driven by fear it's driven by desperation there are not a lot of Democrats even this morning jumping up and down in Saint Joe Biden's gonna be a great candidate a great president but this negative energy is very powerful and that's what's driving this trend do you think it's now his to lose or is it too early to say that definitely has to lose end up and I think it's gonna be very difficult for Bernie Sanders to rebound here the one variable of course the one no wild card is by himself as I say he has not been report he's still the guy who can show astounding lapses of judgment he's still the guy who could make gaffes he's still the guy who can show his age very clearly he's still the guy who can appear fumbling and uncertain and in debates with Bernie Sanders and interviews it's still entirely possible for him to make damaging mistakes I think a lot of Democrats even if they rally around by they're holding their breath and hoping that Biden will get its act together and I've seen some signs a few signs of Byton improving on the stop I think he's shown a little bit more energy I think the campaign line about I'm the candidate of those who have been left behind it counted out is a defective and powerful line really echoes of a bill to written of nineteen ninety two the comeback kid although Biden's hardly a kid he's more the comeback teaser than the comeback kid and also this line of of of appealing to the concepts of dignity and civility and normalcy I think they provide a fairly stark contrast to the president who's in the oval office now but Biden is still Biden it was all of his flaws but at this point he's the Democrats best hope and it's gonna be very difficult for Sanders to capture Steve thanks for your thoughts again this morning ABC news political analyst Steve Roberts it's also worth noting that this morning one of the former "Dungeons and dragons player's handbook and monster manual covers from like the second edition like the early eighties because these are like totemic images like I never actually successfully played dungeons and dragons because it sounded amazing. Did you try yet? Because it seemed amazing like it seemed totally creative like amateur create a story, and you could create characters, and you know, even wanting to be a writer at a young age that would be the greatest thing. To do. But then ultimately, which is rolling dice was rolling dice and being dependent on someone who is the dungeon master making the story, and I never ever really found the right DM, if you know what I mean, never really slid into your life, honestly. But what it represents still what's interesting and pizzicato for all our obviously obvious differences in state of differences were more or less the same age raise maybe couple years older. I think yeah hair. But these books like you just would see them in these weird covers, and they felt like portals as you said Chris into other realities, and almost that's enough that mystery of the sliding doors like you could chase down that thing. And it makes you feel certain way because it felt so strange and foreign and other it was only in the back row of the Walden books or the older the friend's older, brother bookshelf, and that the mystery of opportunity of childhood is so fascinated. Yeah. And selling I did a really good job with that. Because initially he just presents will is this like kid who rides his bike and has a boy scouts backpack. Taking care of sister. And just seems like nothing nothing to see here. It's a great point. But ultimately, I think the thing that remains the most successful to me about the season versus other seasons. And versus other shows that might the Netflix might also suggest to you. "In texas a you consider yourself a texan before you consider yourself a united states citizen people are more proud of being born and raised in texas than they are being i think they're really the difference would be though and i would agree with that they're really proud to share it same thing where i was born in chicago people that are locals there they love sharing chicago with you here in the pacific northwest i don't get the feeling that's right from you they don't wanna share with you get back lanes right i agree with that i think there are just okay just coming from me and this is just off the top of my head right now i feel like if there's there's these things that you don't know them or you don't say them right then you are not local you have to know what a gooey doc is and you have to know how to pronounce it when you see it's spelled out because it looks like geo duck you do have to be able to say squirm and puyallup when i first moved here i was on the air and i said and eight hundred octogenarians call been very angry with me and also oh i just forgot my other one oh it was the big o huge pet peeve amongst locals it is not pike's place market it is pike place market right and you're not sending the my thing is the puget sound or going into puget sound puget sound is a body of water area is the landmass around the body of water and so like but yeah i i think both things can be true i think local in the sense of what you're saying if someone stopped you on the street and they're like where's where's the market you can go oh you're on fourth now it's three blocks over that way or which ways ballard you know a point but being born somewhere where i think your identity as well the thing is you look at it you go back and you look at native americans who are the real locals and they never put their steaks and set up shop they were nomads and they shared their land and they shared their abundance with everyone maybe we could still learn a lesson from them in two thousand eighteen what else is going on.
