Ravens Measure Up to Great Apes on Intelligence
"Ravens are known for their exceptional intelligence. In fact there are sometimes referred to as flying primates. We knew they are very smart but nobody ever really tested this using a big and comprehensive test battery which also then really enabled us to say is the Performance similar to those of great apes or not simona. Pika is a cognitive scientist at the university of osnabruck in germany. She and her colleagues wanted to see how ravens would measure up primates across a wide array of tasks so they subjected eight ravens. To something called the primate cognition test battery. It's a series of thirty three different tasks. Designed to assess various aspects of intelligence among primates. For example one test is a game of cups. You may have seen it affair. He put an object under one of three cups. Move the cups around. And then guess which cup. The objects under other tasks tested the ravens ability to determine cause and effect or to understand different quantities. Peanuts were popular test item to keep the birds motivated overall. The researchers found that four month old ravens which you might think of as teenage ravens did just as well on most tasks as adult chimps and orangutans except on tests of spatial skills. Net was a little bit surprising for us but we use attests better. Which was designed to test primate cognition and these tasks which may make sense for human children may be great apes right now. We use this for a species which is very different. They are flying. they have speaks they. Communicate was a beacon. That don't have hands whatever so i would say. Yeah that may be the past. We used to test. The spatial skills could be improved. The results appear in the journal. Scientific reports kaley swift behavioral ecologist. Who studies crows and other corvettes at the university of washington. She says she was impressed by the results. In how comprehensive the tests were but says it can be hard to assess intelligence by comparing across species. I'd like to see a sort of shift in our language from comparing ravens to primates like calling them flying primates to rethinking like how we scale animals and not putting them on such a linear scale. Right we're like wow birds are smart as apes. It's amazing who would have thought it's like well. There's just a bunch of different release meeting all day. Their natural history informs different aspects of their physical and social cognition in like. It's much less linear than the narrative. We often tell. Intelligence she says is much more complex and variable and we think think.

The centre of pizza yous is goingto pass on 120 miles to our West. Is going to come up through just west of New York City, and then come right up along that Massachusetts New York border. So if the center of that storm is way over there 120 miles to our east with not being that strong a storm. Yeah, we're gonna have some effects. What you're going to see. Look at those showers and thunderstorms in New York City. Right now. Those are the ones that you will start to see come up towards us here mid the late afternoon, and that's the band of some showers and thunderstorms. And so I expect you were expecting a watch box to come out here for our area. Terms of a Tornado watch was already one down around the New York City area. But again, I think that's in terms of the rain. A couple of rounds of showers and thunderstorms afternoon very early evening, and then the rains out the wind is going to pick up but being that far away from us over land weakening. We're expecting Gust 40 to 50 miles per hour up until later the sanding this evening at their peak and then start to diminish overnight. This is a lot like Faye. It's not as much for us because it's gone so far to the west of us in terms of its track, But we'll see some problems.

Media Surprised by Tesla Registrations Despite Shutdown
"Everybody robbing our here today we were talking about a number of different reports on tests registrations in the united. States in the month of April and May tussle stock, despite some of these reports finished the day up one percent to nine hundred ninety one dollars, seventy nine cents that compared to the Nasdaq up zero point two percent all right so as much as I would love to skip this topic because I think a lot of us know where this is. Is Heading. Most of the Tesla headlines today are related to a Wall Street Journal article published this morning titled Quote Tessa Registrations Plunge in California data tracker, says and quote, then leading off the article with quote, registrations of newly purchased Tesla vehicles plunged critical California market over the past two months according to new data underlining the challenge chief executive Elon, Musk faces to keep investor enthusiasm that has helped propel the company's share price and quote the Wall Street Journal Journal cites data from Dominion Enterprises which apparently tracks registrations in twenty four states that make up about sixty five percents of the US market, and in those twenty four states they say that Tesla registrations declined thirty three percent to fourteen, thousand, one, hundred and fifty one vehicles during the first two months off cue to the media, then seemed to go full, shocked Pika Chew Mon and read a whole bunch of articles about this highlighting Tesla's quote, unquote plunging registrations so. So I thought had a little bit of fun with that with the today. Apologies for that, but the point here is that this should not be surprising at all. People seem to have forgotten that Tesla. Had Their factory shut down for seven weeks from late March to early May as we know. Tesla is somewhat unique in that their registration or sales, information correlates strongly to their production rather than simply being an indication of demand like we might see from. Cars we can easily see this in the inventory numbers. If we look at Tesla, they had twenty days of inventory at the end of Q. on of March that comes right from their shareholder letter, and if we look at a company like Ford, for example, they said that at the march they had one hundred days of inventory so twenty days of inventory doesn't get. Get you too far when you're factories, shut down for fifty days compared to if you had one hundred days of inventory in stock like four does according to Cox Automotive, many brands actually had more than one hundred days of inventory at the end of March including Honda, jeep, Cadillac, an Acura and many others, and then even on the low end. They have KIA as. As the lowest brand at forty three days, so Tesla's inventory is about twenty to twenty five percent of the average and half of that of the lowest other brand in the US. The other important consideration here when we look at April and May specifically for the United States is that because Tesla restarted production in early, may that only gave them a couple or A. A few weeks to be able to produce vehicles ship them over to Europe and have them delivered within Q. Two, so with that being the case, obviously a very small amount of vehicles produced in May are going to actually be allocated for the North American market, so yeah plenty of reasons for us to expect registrations to have been down year over year in April. April and May in the US definitely not shocked Pichu type of situation, even with all that being the case in the same article, The Wall Street Journal says that Dominion Research says that the industry fell forty three percent in April and may remember. They have tussled down thirty three percent, so even without much inventory, Tesla is still outperforming the broader industry. You actually interpret. Interpret this as relatively bullish report. The other thing that I want to talk about briefly is the actual number here. So they said that registrations were fourteen thousand, or so in the first two months of the quarter and remember that's four states that make up about sixty five percents of the total US auto market. Tesla probably penetrates a little bit higher in those markets. Markets, because it does include California, so if we assume that that's about seventy five percent, then that can point to a number of about eighteen thousand five hundred vehicles registered in the United States in April, and met now I'm not putting much weight into these numbers, but that number does seem extremely reasonable. We know that Tesla began the quarter with about thirty thousand vehicles. Vehicles in inventory, so if we assume about half of that inventory, or about fifteen thousand vehicles were in the United States at the end of March then for us to have eighteen thousand vehicles registered in the US in April, and may sounds like a pretty reasonable number, if tussle were to sell off some of that inventory mentor, and then we add in deliveries from. That are probably not entirely allocated for Europe as well as Mata. Why if anything I see this report? As a low weight indicator that things are roughly on track. One less thing. I wanted to point out on this. The street did run article separate from my page on this topic and I didn't really love the headline. They reach out me, gave me the opportunity to add some context, and then actually included all of my comments in the article on this

So the first set is a BRA and panty set. It is like a Sweetheart Pink. A light blush color and it's got like a darker pink for the embroidery thread. It looks like it's got embroidery like from a distance. Right now out there in the Pokemon community your thoughts on Gr- Ninja getting the top spot and other pokemon Cario Mimic. You Charles ARD umbrella there. The top five but Pika chewed the most recognizable of the mall is barely even the top twenty and Evey is just barely twenty there so I asked him a friend. What's going on with people's changes in taste in what they love about. Pok Mon I duNNo. I feel like the older generation of Pokemon fans have kind of fallen off the wagon such as you and I and a newer generation of pokemon fans is there and the ones that are from older games. That are recognizable are only because they still take up so much spotlight in the newer games. Too like for example the POKEMON. Let's go e V pokemon. Let's go peek. At you like you could fly your charter around right like you still got those Pokemon and they were still fun to play with and you needed to use them to get to certain parts of the map like they still take up centerfold in the newer pokemon games and I think that's what keeps them alive especially like Ginga gingas. Always in the cartoons. He's in the movies. He's got a bunch of plush toys of gang are everywhere you go? And it's it's they've done a good job of marketing. They market the POKEMON that they want to be front and center right the and you know they. They have a certain set. So we're not gonNA see like a d glit- or something you know making that top list were just gonNa see the ones that pokemon decides to focus on in the new
Live From The HIBT Summit: Stewart Butterfield
"Hey everyone so today. We've got another one of my conversations from the how I built this summit. That happened in San Francisco last October. And you don't in the world of startups. Most difficult moves to pull off is a pivot to maneuver out of your first idea into something that might have more potential and Stewart Butterfield. He pulled this off not once but twice about seventy years ago. Out of the ashes of failed video game. Stewart launched slack an office collaboration tool that now has twelve million daily users but before slack back in two thousand four Stewart was struggling to get traction Shen with another video game called game never ending. He wound up shedding that one down too but out of that failure he was able to launch a photo sharing site called liquor which he sold just a year later for around twenty million dollars so when I sat down with Stewart onstage. I asked him about both of those pivots. Starting starting with the first one from game. Never ending to flicker there was a point and you talked about this in the podcast where you had to decide whether to drop all this work on this computer game like more than a year. I think two years of work on this game and pivot to the photo sharing site and there was a debate in internal debate. I wonder how did you know that that was the right thing to do. Because our instinct would tell us to push forward Gordon to keep going right like. That's what we think we're supposed to do to just carry on and March forward. Yeah there's a lot of advice that's just persevere grit grit resilience gotta keep going in the face of adversity over and over but there is definitely a point where you either you know. It can't work or kind of like the reverse verse manifesting of I don't believe anymore this could work. which makes it very unlikely? If if the person leading the project doesn't believe it can work. It's it will be a weird fluke for it actually to work out but we were just out of money and it would have been much more difficult complex project. Complete Games would have taken us a minimum of another year but probably realistic closer to two more years. And we didn't have that kind of time. Whereas flicker we figured we can get version of this out in A couple of months and it actually was. I don't remember the exact dates anymore but some time in December two thousand and two that we decided to do it and early February two thousand three launched. So you guys ended up selling flicker to Yahoo and you described yourself as briefly Internet famous. You you actually were on the cover of Newsweek magazine with with some of the people at one point which. I'm assuming Gotcha some attention to allow you to kind of think about the next project kicked you decide to go back and start another company. That was going to be a computer game called glitch. What was driving you then I I mean did you think okay? Now I've failed failed the first time now. I know how to do it right. We can talk about the reasons that we used to convince ourselves that it would work this time. There was actually a lot of realistic realistic stuff. There the cost of hardware so servers in the background had fallen by at least ninety percent and bunch of things change by a factor of ten the number of people online line change by a factor of ten the availability of great open source software tools but stepping back when I got in line in Nineteen Ninety two and I grew up in Victoria British Columbia. which is a pretty small town actually provincial? It's on the edge of the continent and then it's on an island so it feels very remote and cut off from the rest of the world world to kind of an an observer and when I got to college I got an account on the school's unique machine and that meant I had access to the Internet and this is maybe six or nine months before the web really started to take off so the Internet at that time was a thing called newsgroup which is hierarchical directory of kind. Hi discussion boards for more or less everything in the world's hugely popular in the scientific community and academic communities but also recreational in fact kind of mind blowing looming but wreck dot music dot g dead. The grateful dead Newsgroup was the most popular thing on the entire Internet is like in terms of traffic it was the net flicks of its day. Just like the text postings going back and forth and I just really remember that as being one of the most revelatory mind-blowing experiences in my life that even though we were on the edge of the world at felt like and kind of really outside of everything that was really happening. I can connect anyone and that kind of the possibilities for computer technology to facilitate human interaction to me are endlessly fascinating and I think when we you look back. Tens of thousands of years to this time it will seem as significant as the development of written language because it just allows this accretive knowledge allows allows the accessibility allows US instant communication coordination between people. And we're still like one percent of the way into exploring the possibilities. So I mean with with glitch right. This is a beautiful game. Raise money around it. You had great developers. You convince people to move across the country work on this what happened. It just didn't so in this case we had the money in fact acme of money leftover when we decided to shut it down but it was apparent that it wouldn't work and I think this is a if there's one thing that's an actual like practical lesson for entrepreneurs in in all of this history besides the sometimes pivots work it's It's hard if it's really really hard to explain your at an enormous disadvantage wjr. And so what does the way games are marketed. Generally as there's kind of two by two Matrix and in one access it's the kind of veneer. Looks like the World War. Two or post apocalyptic sci fi or it looks like Bennigan's and dragons or it looks like Pika chew or something like that like cutesy cartoon. There's that the flavor of it and then there's the the the mechanics of the game first person shooter real time strategy and puzzle games and stuff like that and games are marketed is. It's like their position on this grid so it's a World War Two first person shooter. Game an instantly people can see like at least I understand what that is and maybe I'm interested in. Maybe I'm not. We tried to sell the world a massively multiplayer game with no combat cooperative. It was kind of Monty Python meets Dr Dr seuss surreal absurd literally. This is the game with you. Would milk butterflies collect milk. You would squeeze eggs. Squeezed chickens to get eggs anyway was very How did you raise? Money are around that I think the fact that we had been successful before but is also right at this interesting juncture where it was around round the year that android came out around the year that iphones actually started to take off and suddenly. There's this massive shift in people's discretionary Internet time from desktop and laptop stopping heaters to mobile's we had made a bat on Flash AS TECHNOLOGY FOR DELIVERING The game which wasn't going to work on mobile's and in the end that that really was the nail in the coffin. If it hadn't been for that I think it would have been worth trying a little bit more but I was committed in everyday came in with optimism and that was sure that this next thing that we were going to try it was going to work and then we did it and it didn't work but by the end I think the kind of technological dead end we had find or sounds going down the fact that it was desktop only a world that was going increasingly mobile the fact that it was already so hard to explain made it really tough. Despite the fact that there it was a super committed very enthusiastic audience I just lost faith and I realized then like once I had done that it was now.
The Snubs and Surprises of the 92nd Academy Award Nominations
"I'm Shawn Fantasy and and this is the big picture. A conversation show about the Academy Awards. They're here. Amanda the Ninety Second Oscar. Nominations have arrived. How are you feeling bright and early on this Monday morning he I do love it? I don't I don't love being here this early. I was saying to you before before we started recording and it just felt like a disclosure before we get into this podcast. My outlook at this hour of the morning is never the best. WE'RE ARE GONNA be flying fast and loose. That's what happens when you record it seven thirty in the morning. We're going to do our best to not make any mistakes. Some mistakes were made by the academy however will be talking about some of them the snubs the surprises houses. Some of the Nice things that happened with the nominations this morning. It's it'll be a robust conversation about what will be happening on February ninth the Academy Awards. Yeah there are some good do things absolutely absolutely some baffling things. Where do you WANNA start? We start with the big picture. Big Picture let's do it okay. Problem in the big picture do you. Yeah I mean maybe we'll start with the most honored movies that seems like the safest place to start first and foremost first and foremost the joker comes to us with eleven nominations now. Were you surprised now. I wasn't either. Let me tell you something about joker people in the academy love. I love that movie actors. They love it directors. We learned clearly. They love it craftspeople. They love it. Composers there in up and down the board and you've only got one acting nomination for this for walking Phoenix. So you can see how it's it's diversely. Spread across the entire voting body any significant takeaways from joker being the leading vote getter so to speak in this in this race. I didn't expect it to be the leading nomination. I think I expected that to go in nineteen seventeen which is a little bit recency bias and also just because I expected nineteen seventeen to grab every single technical nomination because that's it is Zayd technically accomplished movie so joker winning denominations thing is not what you want it is. It certainly changes the narrative. Maybe I mean it'll change what we talk about this morning. I don't know how much it changes the results on the on Oscar night. It's interesting. How as you prepared to speak about joker you pulled your hair back to a pony tail resignedly? I people know what I think about best and I want to stay right here and right now. It ain't going to change. I think that this is an intellectually bankrupt movie. I think it is the emperor's new clothes. I think that anyone and who thinks that this movie is better than parasite or once upon a time in Hollywood or little women are uncut gems has bad taste and doesn't know things about movies straight up and we can do that for for five weeks or we cannot. I'm at I don't really have the energy to do it for that long. Yeah I don't think that that's I don't think we'll be negotiating that until the movie potentially wins Best Picture which you know not always as the most nominated film the likely best picture winner but sometimes it does happen. Tends to happen with noisy movies. Like Lord of the Rings the return it at King Joker ochre is kind of a noisy movie. This is a billion dollar movie and having this many nominations having this kind of box office having this kind of awareness and having this kind of admiration from from the screen actors is. That's a pretty significant thing. So if we saw a joke best picture win on February ninth. I wouldn't be shocked. I don't know if that's what I'm ready ready to predict at this point but I wouldn't be shocked. I neither and in a lot of ways. It makes a huge amount of sense in terms of the academy has refused to WHO ACKNOWLEDGE COMIC book movies or Superhero Movies for years the academy has been trying to update itself to chew reward new types of movies too like to be current to be younger and that the end of the day the score says he caused play. Look it's tiny. Batman man movie winning Best Picture would be academy esque thing to do. It's true and it would be one year after Black Panther which sort of ushered in a lot of these conversations. What else has been honored here once upon a time in Hollywood and parasite the Irishman? You've mentioned those ten nominations for each movie. I don't think a huge surprise there for once upon a time in the Irish Ryan parasite is excuse me once upon a time in the Irishman ten as nineteen seventeen. Let's just talk about those first four gets parasite and I think that is. This is kind of standard operating procedure seizure. What we've got here is three people who made films who have been hugely recognized in the past Quentin Tarantino? Martin Scorsese Mendis as you said the reasons he buys of nineteen seventeen creeping innocent all weekend thinking nineteen seventeen the presumptive frontrunner for best picture. I don't know if I still feel that way right now. A couple of little chinks in the armor that will take a look at identify whether or not that's still the case any big time takeaways from the ten NAM's for all three of those movies are taking things for granted I am. I know that I'm taking granted. It's fantastic once upon a time in Hollywood got ten nominations. It's fantastic. They got ten movies. Nineteen seventeen very impressive movie. We're GONNA talk more about it later this week. It is less surprising that got ten nominations. You know I I saw someone on twitter describing this as a real like wars and cars years which every year at the academy is that you know the nineteen seventeen is the war part of that but very well made movie I it. So that's good. We shouldn't immediately jumped to all of the griping even though I certainly have and the reason I did that is because Joe got eleven nominations and I really don't WanNa talk about it this early in the morning but there are a great films that are being recognized there are among them is also parasite and little women both of which pulled in six nominations. Yes which is interesting. I am not surprised by either of those things but it is. It is a credible accomplishment. And I think a Lotta people on any kind of film. Twitter sense are frustrated by some of the joker recognition ignition but parasite getting six Oscar. Nominations is insane it is. There is no precedent in ninety one consecutive Oscar categories or excuse me ninety one consecutive Oscars for something like this happening so I take some solace in parasites success. So far I live is my favorite film of the year or was it. Yeah I think I put it at number one very early. It's definitely up there and put it on my decade. Let's no this is an amazing film and like and Bongino hoping direct nominated for best director. That's very exciting. And you are completely right that it was it has become such a quote lock or we we we were so sure of it that we are not like Kinda rejoicing especially in the parasite of it. All little women is the same way. There are a a couple notable omissions in the little women. Nominations that maybe put a sleigh damper on it which we will talk more about but you know it did get nominated for best picture. Sure thank the Lord. I thought that was the one where I was. Just GonNa not show up this morning. Yes so there's something interesting about the parasite. Nominations to be one is that the film was recognized in both best editing and best production design. which are you know? Chris categories and on the one hand that's kind of impressive and shows a broad sense of support amongst the academy. No acting nominations for the movie though. Oh No song-ho none of the other actors in the film were recognized. There's a maybe a case to be made that this is a kind of acknowledgement of like a film mastery mastery but maybe not the same kind of Hollywood is star mastery. That movie like the Irishman or once upon a time in Hollywood receives. I'm not sure where I fall on that. I think it does feel like progress to me to some extent the little women thing you make a fair point which is that on the one hand brilliantly made movie with wonderful performances. It's great that it's nominated for best picture as well. The absence of Greta Gerwig In the best director category something. We'll talk about a little bit more here on kind of what that means. It's kind of dangerous to draw mega conclusions from the Academy Awards. There's only eight thousand people in this group and a lot of them are old and weird so you can't we don't this is even though. This is the sort of the definitive document of movie history story in terms of achievement. It is one of the wonkfest award recognizing bodies in the in the world Academy President David Rubin noted that what makes makes this special is that this is the people who make movies voting on. What is the best movies? And that's part of what makes the ostrich great that's part of what makes them kind of terrible is because there's an insularity into some of this. The parasite recognition is something that makes me think. Maybe this isn't such an insular body anymore. Maybe there are a lot of international voters. Maybe this is changing changing. Maybe the the way that we look at international movies changing in our American culture. I think that's certainly true. And I and I do think that the economy trying to change itself and how we talked about the movies has evolved enough that we were starting in a place where we expected parasite to be nominated expected. Little women to be nominated we were talking about whether uncut cut gems would make an end and the fact that. We're all kind of bummed out about the fact that uncut gems got snubbed. which it your? Maybe you're not supposed to use the word snob in that context. But let's use it always it got snuck. Uncut gems was snubbed and that I think that that in does indicate some some progress wrestle. Change some different lineup than we would have had five years ago and a different approach to the movies on the flip side we can. We can only only addressed the world that we live in. And I do feel because we've been having these conversations for awhile and because it was such an exciting year in a year that has parasite parasite the Irishman once upon a time in Hollywood uncut gems. Little women the farewell. What am I forgetting? I mean all kinds of movie. Sure but you know all vendors and games okay shirt KAZAM. Great Active Pika Chew. Well that was this does I can't help but feel that. This is a disappointing configuration of of that list of movies. It's not totally disappointing. But there is something of. We got our hopes up enough. They are kind of like. Oh yeah this is still the academy. And they're still going to be a lots of nominations for the more traditional types of movies
It's Been a Super Busy Week for the Switch
"Welcome to Nintendo voice chat My name is Tom Marks temporary host again this week joining me today is Mr Brennan Graber Hey what's up and Mr Jonathan Dornbush hey just give us a minute all right yeah give it some time let will grow on you this episode four seventy nine it's kind of weird week this week because there's much going on we're getting into the busy fall season so a pair isn't here. Brian is busy with a preview Casey just got back from Japan shoes at Nintendo Live Zach is in La Janet is in Seattle it's just like everyone is when we wish him well there but yeah a busy busy week so I got some good good friends we're going to be we've got a good show for you still we're GONNA be talking about some recent news older there's not a ton this week we're also talking about a would there has been attend this week is review news so we're GONNA be talking about recent reviews for switch or the biggest ones of this week sorry Jonathan did you have a point to make up oh thumbs up even a thumbs up domino is off to a great start already got a busy week for releases there's a lot coming out so be sure to stick around we just got a lot of great stuff talk about this laid back episode and for the first thing we want to talk about let's talk to start jumping in with with news because there's there's not a ton but there are some cool things to discuss here the first being I feel like it's become a weekly tradition on this show Tuesday hey there's new pokemon stuff were in that cycle where there unreleased things every week they're really getting people going hype and people up by adding just need a little bits and pieces this week we got fat peak itchy Cha end long mouth hand along we also got a weird flaming charred I think somebody pointed out this is the fourth alternate a fourth version because there's the charred mega ex mega y and then now this guy which is gigantic Max journalists more than Lynn and farm heroes game your summer chart here's a winter charges charter just having like an identity crisis trying to figure out like who's the true Char's are I think people I just really like buying Char's dragon yeah people like charter charter school so these gigantic tax forms which basically means if certain pokemon that dynamex which means getting really big if you have a and this is the weird thing a specific po come on that can gigantic Max will show up with a different look to the so pika chew if you have data and this is the kind of interesting to me if you have data from let's go Pika Chew you can transfer that and get a p get you bet gigantic Max's into this very fat Pika Chew reminiscent of its first Iteration Husky boy yeah like pokemon yellow box art yeah yeah exactly similarly if you have data from let's go easy you get this very flu fee ev that gigantic taxes lucky boy yeah there's also chart I don't think they mentioned how you get that charge hard if you have let's go with the mouth is not exactly like a preorder bonus it's like if you play at the beginning of the game klay early you get this meow that will turn into basically long we had like mystery gifts that they would send out a mail and so it's probably me some of them like hey tune in for the next two months to get your you know crazy haunts the forearms right answers Cuban who's always not depressed finally happy happy it would be the saddest thing to skulls the other thing they showed was butter free that just kind of look like it had bigger prettier wings so it'll be interesting to see I like that they're doing ask that they're shaking up the the Dinah maxing tickets flavor yeah nice yeah it's not just we took the model and we stretched a right it was my worry when they showed that something like it's just GonNa look weird doing fun stuff with it especially when you're introducing a new thing that all of the previous pokemon generation and have added bells and whistles and tried to shake things up especially recently when it comes to battles but there can always be a little bit of trepidation so I think giving this nice visual incentive to for yeah to get something different out of it I like a lot I don't necessarily think it's going to convince any of the people who were not convinced by dynamex her show but it it at least is a nice little added touch it's interesting to see this this thing where it's like only specific only this mouth can do this only this Pika chew that is from the let's go peek data can do this not just any Piquiachu that's an interesting little mechanic that they're adding in the other thing I wanted to call out is our very own Janika who's away right now did a hands on preview gone up as a Thursday morning when we posted this show she got to play the first ninety minutes of Sword Shield and did a big old hands on on so go check out I G M dot com to read her thoughts on on her time with game after having spent some actually significant time with because we have played at three but it was just real brief of a gym yeah it was simple and so she she got some genuine time from what I hear is a major player in this game yeah as blue should be but yeah I talked to Janet a bit too not to like speak on her behalf please go check out our preview but yeah as she was telling me about what she saw she seemed pretty positive on like the things it's maintaining but also trying to off the formula right she caught it I think she called it like their most ambitious game in the series which is cool here adding digital we'll do that go straight to I'm telling you early in the first five minutes I will roll you out of here on that very easy on this floor it really is it's very slippy you guys don't see this but we fight a battle every moment on this show now just not slipping away from that so yeah go check out our program on previous preview on Dot com right now another of news that dropped that I was really interested to see God people more excited than I was expecting manufacturable analog who are known for making these super not which is a system that hardware emulates so that you can play Super Nintendo Games on it it's not essentially it mimics a super nintendo oh to play Super Nintendo games properly but you still need the game right you still need the games they're very against emulating games they WANNA make hardware that will run those games they just announced something called the analog pocket which is looks like a fancy little gameboy pretty much and it will play Gameboy Games game boy color games and homeboy advanced games and you again you need the cartridges this is actually playing these things but it'll play these systems or these games just out of the gate you just plug in the Trajan works except it has three point five inch LCD screen that's sixteen hundred by fourteen forty resolution and the whole thing is to hun everydollar what excited I do have a an sp on my desk that cannot hold a charge for battery I lost the chargers it and I really WanNa play one of the Games but I can't so this is like ooh this could be a workaround that will be nice the one thing I'm kind of like if the design it's making that that original gameboy look but it's a lot more sleeker but I would have almost wanted a an SP version or an advanced version words or horizontal vertical right I mean DSP is the undisputed best game boy so I my gameboy advance S. P. it's one of my great childhood tragedies that I had to throw it out at some point in a move yeah I like the design of how sleek it is but I don't know if I will buy it for two hundred dollars mostly because like my gameboy advance S. P. I don't have any of my gameboy library anymore right and that's like the big sticking point for me is like if these games are more easily accessible in a legal way to buy and obviously you know a lot of game stops and other stores have older libraries but man I would play so many of my old games like I spent so much time on my gameboy advance foundational to my love of games but this is a really cool tool for collectors or people held onto all these things to play these games easily on a piece of tack that's not you know decades old at this time and the really nice for yeah so this is another the thing is this is coming in two thousand twenty some time and it's going to have a separate thing that you can buy also that is a doc like the switch where you can plug your gameboy game into the analog pocket and then you plug the analog pocket into a doc and you can connect a bluetooth controller to that and then play your game boy color or Gameboy advance or gameboy games on a t we like a switch basically it's much more elegantly than the Gamecube gameboy adapter young into the bottom of the system. So funny I still have one of those I I had service yeah so goofy yes so that's it I mean I don't know if I'd ever want to play a game boy game on a four K. TV but it's cool that they're just taking that extremely accessible to do yeah yeah I think like ten game boy games on me so the price point is an issue boy also have pairs giant Goodie bag true game boy games steel for oil there's just get a bag of game boy games in a pile and like picking one out it's like oh wow castle or like oh well beauty and the beast for gameboy color copies of Sri Castle the castle real I didn't know this was a thing way back yeah oh teddy release system the Gameboy back the analog pocket you can check it out for yourself we've got more details on Jan well it's very it's very cool I just like elected they're doing this I I really appreciate analog doing stuff even if the price point is our above the range that I would be paying WanNa pay for it it's a it's still going to be really nice thing for the people who do go after that and can't afford it price point like I understand it especially for the people who probably do have collections and are like willing to shell out because of how useful and modern of piece of equipment this is moving on there's a couple of other things sonic is coming to super monkey ball banana blitz hd this is the master of the we

"So then we have mentoring, and we stay in touch via Facebook. And so we've tracked these women. In time, and we've learned a lot about college women and their experiences. And so what we found is that you can dramatically increase, the mentoring networks of undergraduate women. If you try. If you show women more women, they increase their science identity and their intention to stay in the sciences. And the coolest thing that we found is that for every vol model that an undergraduate women can identify her odds of staying in the earth sciences. Doubles. So women find out that there are other women them that really helps it really. And the best part is these are role models. They're not necessarily a mentor. Right. So making more visible to younger women seems to really help at least on the earth, and environmental sciences Myra Plato, this science Friday from WNYC studios. I know you're running a related project on sexual harassment in the sciences. We've done segments on science Friday about how pervasive daddy's, how are you working to turn that around to improve the ASO? This started about a year ago when I was getting ready for my wildfire sampling campaign. There was a National Academy report that came out on sexual harassment. Right. And so when that came out, one of the key findings with that this was a cultural issue. And so I decided, okay, I'm leading a big team. I need to follow best practices. So in doing that I had to figure out what best practices were actually. And so what we. With support from the National Science Foundation. I partnered with gender psychologist and another NSF funded team. And what we did was we. Surveyed my entire team on weekend, which is about one hundred people prior to the field campaign. Then we did a training where we did scenarios that are very real to field programs and conference settings. Things typical to academic scientists, and then we ran our flu around in the smoke, as we just talked about, and then we surveyed them again post campaign. And so do you want me to tell you what we found? I have. No. I'll tell you. I found. Okay. So as it turns out, it happens and it happens here. So fifty percent of the women on my field team had had experienced sexual harassment and field settings. Five oh you got it. And so the men are experiencing at to they're experiencing it differently than the women and hostile work climate, is the biggest the biggest issue that we have in our field, but we had things reported that we're very, very far from hostile work climate, where we're very bad, and then most people are not reporting, it, they're avoiding the situation or have other type of social coping, and then what was good news was that people were much more comfortable intervening and discussing it after the training. And so every science team meeting that I have we revisit sexual harassment and we think about how as community we can lead. So. Feel feel teams in particular, I think have to lead on this issue because they have science leaders across multiple universities and national labs and government agencies, and so it's, it's should be a very effective way to spread best practices. You train other field teams how to do with your doing. That's the eventual outcome of this project is to make basically a recipe book for other principal. Investigators on field team so that they can follow the lead. And there's a really awesome project called advanced GIO that has developed materials for training, a variety of different groups on sexual harassment grew I guess one last question here, so about your work with women in science. Got really lucky my role model. My mom has a page and a little go chemistry. So she was very excited. What she heard about all the instruments. What can I do as an undergrad in chemistry and scientists to help other women in science? Stick together and give back to the high schoolers. Okay, thank you. But I'd rank these hitman and then hitman agent forty seven, but by a hair, I mean, they're pretty much equally bad to me. I I don't know that a movie like this deserves to have a good leap performance. It's not like I want someone I really respect as an actor to take this role. I mean, Paul Walker rest in peace. But I don't know that he was very good actor either. I don't think he would have blown us out of the water if he had been able to play this role that they got some nondescript guide to play clone. Fine. I mean, it's just not a movie franchise, that's begging me to return again. And again, so the fact that this is going to right now it's in development to being a TV series on Hulu seems like the perfect conception of how to take this video game episodic every episode. He goes somewhere else on a different mission to kill somebody else. And you can make what's interesting about it. The people he interacts with that seems much more appealing. Than the idea following agent forty-seven or agent ninety through future sequel right because after all it is a video game world. And it's trying to live in an action. Movie spy thriller universe without earning. Either of those things, but yeah, you're right TV might be the perfect place for this. Like, you said weekly missions with an overall overarching mission to figure out who he is essentially that he can find out at the end of season three fine. I'm not going to be chomping at the bit for something like that. But it feels more appropriate there. Yeah. TV's great. Because that means I don't have to watch it. I mean, we weren't outside the blast radius of sequel for this. I was very upset when I realized it came out in twenty fifteen and I'm like, I think we need two more years to be really sure they aren't gonna do agent. Forty seven part two. I felt like it was a little too close for comfort. And so yes, go to Hulu, stay out of theaters. Like, I said, it's a bad property to adapt. Because the whole point is. Is not you. It's a puzzle game where you need to go in and be inventive and use cunning and use your wits and be smart and kill somebody and get out and you do it again. And again, and again, that's fun.
