"You're listening to weekend edition from NPR News and from the news. I'm Queenie Kim Piedmont School District is planning on reopening its elementary schools. Kindergarten to fifth grade students will be going back in early December and the upper grades will be back in school in January. That is if the pandemic remains under control in Alameda County here to tell us about help Piedmont is planning to do this is DS Julia McAvoy and Julia Piedmont is a small district, and that gives him an advantage in terms of reopening for in person learning. Definitely. We're talking about a district of some 2500 students. They have just six schools. So yeah, Size makes a huge difference when it comes to logistics of reopening when compared to say, you know, Oakland, which has 36,000 students. And how they're planning to reopen is they've used the cares act money from the feds and the state to redo their H vac system. They have plans for outdoor classrooms. One teacher plans to have kids use clipboards and walk across the street to the park, for example. They're using the same disinfecting methods in their school bathrooms that the airlines are using to clean their airplanes. And, you know, of course, they're going to pee pee in the masks and the testing all in places well. We're going to see cohorts, a small cohort of maybe 13 students attending in the morning and then the other cohort of 13 students attends in the afternoon, and each spends the other half of the day doing distance learning. Now the reopening was pushed by a group of parents, but it's not without controversy. Yes, Oh, board member Corey Smigel said that they decided to survey their elementary school families and that 74% of those families said they wanted their students to go back into school in person. And that's kind of what built up. I think this pressure on the board and the superintendent to really focus on how they could make it happen. One of those parents who was in favor of sending her kid back was Lindsay Thomason, what his teacher has been able to do over the computer. I just don't have words for how impressed I am That said, I do think that the in person learning environment for my kids is best and I Understand that their other families who don't feel the same way for a huge variety of needs, she said. Look, this is absolutely no indictment on the quality of schooling that the teachers were delivering. They were amazing. But her kid really needed more. And I don't mean to say that that's best for everyone, especially right now with different people's concerns, But for my kids, that's the best. Learning environment. So you mentioned the survey, and that began a Siri's of really intense conversations with parents and teachers to figure out how to make this happen. Can you walk us through that timeline a little bit, you know, listen. In September, the district finally signed a work agreement with teachers to return to in person teaching and Before that they had met for months and they'd had many emotional board meetings, trying to figure out how this was going to come together and the fact that they have an agreement right now the teachers are coming back into the classroom is something that a lot of school district's larger districts have not been able to accomplish just yet. And what if you're a parent who doesn't feel comfortable was sending your kid to school? Yeah. Parents who don't want their kids to go back, do not have to send them. They can continue with distance learning. I would add that teachers who don't feel comfortable going back who can make the case. With their health that they should not be back in the classroom can also continue to teach with distance learning. So you mentioned that the teachers union is on board with this plan. Yeah, I spoke with one teacher who said, Look, you know, I'm uncertain of how this is gonna work out, but I'm going to go back in the classroom and see how it goes. Her objection at this point is not so much the safety issue as it is this sort of moral consideration of furthering the inequities that exist in house schooling happens in America, where one set of kids with money and privilege gets ahead and the other set of Children have to scramble for resource is That was Ed's Julia.

This Am a Minstrel Stereotype, Right?

"From New York City this is Lexicon Valley. A podcast about language I'm John Mc, water and this week you know what I'm going to do frankly what I usually do, which is just bring you in what was I thinking about over the past week or two? And it was a bunch of things but I happened to be revising an academic paper that I'm writing and that paper happens to be about black English I don't usually do those but I mean exception with this one because it's a topic that really grabs me and you know when deciding what to do the show about I thought you know I'm going to do what I'm thinking about I. Don't WanNa, do it about Comma Harris or something like that I'm not. Sure. What I could get out of that I wanNA do me and so I'm gonNA share with you some stuff about the always fascinating dialect of American English black. English. It's called by academics usually. African American vernacular English but I have a hard time saying that so we're just going to call it black English and we're GONNA, look at it from various angles that I have been sitting around laying around still in semi quarantine these days and one of the things is. GonNa be the lost. Am That's what my papers about, and this is something that I've brought up on this show before, and that is the question as to whether actual black. American people ever as linguists call it over generalized an in two persons and numbers beyond where it would go and standard English and so for example, I'll tell you I am a person but in characters of black speech back in the day, the idea was that black people used am with all. Pronouns, and so you am this he am that we and the other thing that's something associated with minstrel shows and comic strips, and you would think you would quite reasonably think that that's something that white performers made up as a way of making fun of black people. That's what I thought for a very long time. But after a while various indications seem to suggest to me that actually wait a minute black people did once us am in a different way than mainstream. English does, and of course, it wasn't all black people but there have always been different ways of speaking even here in America and it seemed to me that well, you know as I'm always telling all of you language always changes and black English is no exception and so it seemed to me maybe actually the minstrels overdid it they were characterizing but maybe there was that different usage of an because all these things seemed indicated and in a show that I did. Probably back in about nineteen forty seven remember when I used to be sponsored by kraft macaroni and cheese way back. Then I said that one evidence of this is that there are vernacular British dialects. The US am in just that way you am we am the black country in Britain is sometimes called the people who are the Yam yams and what they mean by that is that they say you am saw gave you some evidence of that but that was that was. Back right after the Second World War and so what about newer evidence? Well, first of all, what do I mean by this as you might call it over generalized am well, here is one of the latest examples of it in pop culture. This is a highly insignificant. Hollywood. Cartoon from the studio that gave us such indelible characterizations as Casper, the friendly ghost and Herman and Catnip who were about the closest thing in real life to itchy and scratchy on the simpsons in. Any case, one of their other indelible characters was buzzy the Crow Buzzy. The Crow was supposed to clearly supposed to be this this black American little character remember the Dumbo crows while Buzzy was an extension of that, and so buzzy uses reflections of the old minstrel dialect. This is a cartoon called no IFS ands or buts, but spelled with two t's it's about smoking and this is what buzzy says about a cat who seems to have a smoking addiction listened closely. Tobacco smoking. To know. That Cat am Am Can am smokin fiend. Okay. So that's the character. But what's interesting is how often you see black American people depicted as speaking that way in many sources that you might think of authoritative and I have something even better than this is going to build up to a big fine. We're we're circling in. We're we're about to find the real thing but some other stuff. That I've found. So for example, there is a novel written by a Black Man, very conscious as we used to say black man eighteen, ninety, nine it's called imperium in Imperio, and the guy's name is Sutton griggs and for whatever it's worth his father was a Georgia slave. So Sutton griggs eighteen nine, he's post emancipation but he would have heard authentic black speech, the speech of. People who were denied education and what's interesting is that in one of his novels he is writing in very serious vain. We would today call him a black nationalist and he has seen where there's a black mother who is being humiliated by a racist white schoolteacher and she's trying to present her child and defend her child and what she says, and this is a black. Writer of black nationalist stamp who grew up with a father who had been at slave and not in New York City but in Georgia so we're talking about wear black English really arose and I WANNA say throws but that's not the were because it's thrived and so he has the mother saying about her child her son, his name and Belton Piedmont arteries, granddaddy arteries after so. Not His name is built in Piedmont his name and Belton Piedmont and she's a character of dignity. His name in Belton Piedmont not is built in Piedmont am. Arteries. granddaddy. What's Ardour ardor is after and shows how authentic this depiction of speech is in that we know that not only black people but also again regional vernacular speaking British people used arter and explains that problem with Jack and Jill. So Jack and Jill went up the hill to get a pail of water jack fell down and broke his Crown Jill. Came Tumbling after what the Hell is. That is that the best they can do of course, not it was Jack and Jill went up the hill to fetch a pail of water jack fell down and broke his crown and Jill came tumbling out. After, because, after can become after. After that is the way many people in for example, Yorkshire still say after October it's dialectal after and so they're always many people who said after and he came here and often they were either slave owners or they worked alongside slaves and so early biking, which has

S. N. B. C. about the president of the United States cut to we have to understand the adversary in the threat we're dealing with and if we don't understand how they think will never understand how to counter them so it's a little things and language and messaging that matters the president said that we will fly our flags at half mast until August eighth that's eight eight well I'm not going to apply that she did this deliberately but I am using it as an example of the ignorance of the adversary that's being demonstrated by the White House the numbers eight eight are very significant in neo **** and white supremacy movement why because the letter H. is the eighth letter of the alphabet and the numbers eight eight together stand for Heil Hitler so we're gonna be raising the flag back up at dusk on eight eight no one's thinking about this no one's thinking about this because it's an idiotic idea that's why they're not thinking about this not thinking about it because it's stupid that's why Frank fickle use either not thinking about it also if you have your white supremacist decoder which I believe I got in it might have been lucky charms I forget well I think was corn flakes I was a captain crunch you got it made crackerjack you got that member this white supremacist secret decoder ring eight eight hi Hitler that right you this is on MSNBC this kind of crazy conspiracy not job this is now on MSNBC acceptable in the course the debate and don't you love to the guy goes I mean I'm not going to suggest but then he completely suggested the president is throwing out secret code to neo **** is rejecting the advice so understand your adversary to counter the adversary I know you're keeping your options open there Frank but as chilling as that is really here yeah Hey it's chilling the fact you let this go on television on an actual news station called what news station that's what's showing about this is that this idiot goes on there with this idiotic conspiracy theory and you Brian Williams don't go get out of here you go chilling amazing that somebody would let the secret **** symbol go this is what I mean about the media and why you got to read by the way and freedom of the press because if you've ever thought that the media was on by a store in the middle or anything like this how can you possibly say that after hearing this clip how can you possibly think there's an objective medium this country when they allow god to come on to suggest the president of United States have the flag to go back up to full staff on August eighth as a secret decoder Mestre draining super double secret probation to a neo **** white supremacists okay that's all the evidence you need right now that the media is absolutely in the tank for the left and insane and also completely hates the president with zero objectivity all right which is the only in for the great one your call straight ahead then it's time to check the roads in that Kate on traffic.

"To Maggie we're almost there there's also in Piedmont aids a completely quiet room one thing to note there please don't go into that space with anything that's like an aggressive sense for instance right try to be chill right take a deep breath before you say anything aggressive sense as in too much Cologne aftershave too much right guard don't do it I'm going there I don't talk to anybody they never quit I don't know yes it's depressing these people are out there but they are and these these are your classic these these these little socialist here we had a caller yes have a great point if these people actually met a real live communist socialist dictator they would be scared out of their shows if they actually encountered a Vladimir Putin they think pulled would come into their convention and implored dominate brace them and welcome them to the movement put would come in and laughs himself silly and send the KGB after all is making a lot more but look bad saving was still Hugo Chavez if these people ran into people who are genuinely communism dictatorial thugs I think they they have fainting spells yeah am heart attacks over the crudeness and the camera violence what are your back to the phones let's see Kate Bremerton Washington great to have you on the EIB network hello thank you you just made my heart leap just a few minutes ago when US game trump the suggestion about what how to include his followers in his in his rallies I've been wondering for a long time how to best support him I can't donate to his campaign I guess I'm not an activist and I've really been kind of at a loss I feel sorry for my pray for and that when used suggested that he include that in that kind of in the attacks that are being waged against him it just made my heart sore because I finally know how I can support him and when he does that when he brings us all and together we can kind of share the burden for him and I don't it just made me feel so good well that's you know that's actually a great way to wa to put it let let let me expand on that a little since I'm I'm I'm actually getting other emails from people who are have have the similar reaction to your which which means it must have hit a nerve by the way this is not a criticism the first thing I want to say it is this is not a criticism what's it in context here in the comments every day about white supremacy and white nationalism and racism and we are mass shooters we are responsible for mass shooters it's it's my theory of that all of us are saving about this we're seething with a controlled rage and anger we're really really ticked off about it but not just because they're saying about trump they're saying about us and there is there are no limits to it there's no sense of responsibility they are the media and these are whipping up Jan your when uncontrolled rage and hatred with us is the focal point we're the enemy were being made out as and and when none of it is anywhere near the truth now in trump's case one of the things that he had going for him is something that he has naturally when he came down the escalator in two thousand fifteen began his campaign started doing the rallies you've heard me speak of the bond it's a it's an intangible thing you can't see it you can see the results of the C. smiling faces long crowds people lining up hours in advance tolerance support understanding support and trump was returning it trump wise letting everybody know how appreciative he was it might spend thirty seconds in a rally acknowledging people you might expect two minutes but there was a point in every rally where he let everybody know that in the deepest part of his heart and soul he loved them and appreciated them and know that none of this would be happening without them and they all knew it everybody at the rally everybody in the trump support system understood that and got it he has that ability just silently charismatically communicate with people well now we are two two and a half years in and there's not I I would submit to you there's not a human being and electoral politics today who could have with stored even a small percentage of what Donald Trump has gotten and he gets it all day every day and there's not a break and after two and a half years of this he would not be in and nobody could blame him for thinking that all of this is a one way thing that everybody's out to get him you couldn't I mean it didn't he he would be a fool not to think that because it happens to be true but in in this instance I think the fact that all of this incoming all of these attempts to literally wrote in and destroying his family his businesses his presidency his wife are also being used on all of his supporters and not that he has forgotten at night and not that he has begun to take anybody for granted don't even think of going there I'm just saying after two and a half years put yourself in his shoes and every day you wake up and you know what's coming and you and if you could be forgiven if you thought that you were the sole target you'd be forgiven if you thought everybody had it out for you all I am saying is that if the president can once again begin to speak up for the people supporting him an act outraged as we all are mad as hell over the injustice of categorizing sixty million people the way they are categorizing him it would rally people it would revive if there is any of that necessary but more than that it would it would it would send a signal that that that trump and his supporters are still bonded everybody's Emma and on the same page and motivated and armed if you will for the future to continue what he was elected to do in two thousand sixteen I look I'm long I'm gonna take a break one more thing maybe a different way of saying this but let me let me take.

"The bags back on the road. There and read it's go real good pass board. Temperature traveler sewed six hundred and sixty two today, the amateur traveler talks about wineries and wolfing hilltop villages and truffles vespers, and the dukes of several as we go to Barreau and the Piedmont region of Italy. Walk over the amateur traveler, your host, Chris Christensen. Let's talk about the Piedmont. I like to welcome to show Betsy and Greg ball from euro travel coach dot com who've come to talk to us about a region. A city wine region in the Piedmont in Italy called Berlow. Betsy in Gregg, welcome to the show. Thank you so much. You having you're welcome. And did I get everything? Right. So far, are we on the right track Sunday? Absolutely. And can you put Berlow on a map for us? Sure. It's up in the northwest part of Italy South of Torino a little ways, and it's a little bit isolated, but it's up in the north west of Italy. And Piedmont itself means the foothills of the Alps, so from that region from our area that we're talking about on nice cleared as you can see the snowcapped peaks of the Alps in the distance excellent. And why are we going to suggest that people think about going here with their precious vague? -cation days. It has battle has the most spectacular food and the most amazing why the most incredible vineyards. The scenery is amazing, the combination of all those things makes you wanna visit amend stay for as long as you possibly can. If you have gone back as I recall, you've just done one trip there. We have gone back a couple times, and then betting I retired. If you wanna call it that from university teaching after many years, one of our primary goals was to big gripe, somewhere after we stopped teaching. And so the last two years we've picked gripes in, in this area harvest. Yeah. So we volunteered in exchange for room and board through Feng. We spent two harvest seasons picking grapes, on inorganic winery, inbetween battle end Donny. Will in case people don't know what I know we have at least one article about whipping that happens to also, I think it'd be about Italy on the amateur travel sites. We're talking about worldwide organization of organic farmers. If I've got the right acronym, their ears super close worldwide opportunities on organic farms, so close. Exactly. It's the exchange labor for and quite often, which are exchanging four would be for housing. Excellent, exactly. Where we state they fed us so well, in addition to having a bed to sleep in a place to shower. We ate very, very well will, I think we'll get to that. But where we gonna start what kind of tenor, we recommending for people in this area this particular area. There are five specific hill towns commune's that make up the wine region. And that's the area that we're going to concentrate on it's easy to take day trips from there. But what I really like to do is find your place and stay put for five or six days at men explore from there. There are these five towns, but I would choose to stay in battle or Amman at or import day, and they're all very close, but their tidily whiny road. So it takes time to get between them all but. For our purposes. Let's say we're gonna stay in buffalo or in the surrounding area, you could stay at Agra trees mall. Stay at a bed breakfast. There are some hotels, I think that the closer, you can get to staying with someone who's from there, someone who lives there, someone who has a farm, they are. I think it makes the experience all the better. I wanna make sure that people understand when we see an Agra trees, move very big in Italy. We're talking about basically in Airbnb with a form someplace where you can stay that is doing tourism, as well as still actively farming. And I think that's the requirements to be in the Italy's agritourism oh program. It is a requirement and more and more. They're heading toward the luxury end of things. So many of them have a nice big pool and things in the farming is is a small part of. But we like the ones where you actually get to see some stuff being down some cheese being made or or wind being. Made or whatever it is. So do you have a particular one that you wanna recommend to people or a couple of them? I'm going to actually recommend a bed and breakfast Ohka has. That's where we stay every time we go to roll. There are lots of options that this is our favorite, and it is called logically. And it is a woman who has three bedrooms on than she has apartment. And she manages some apartments that we met her in two thousand four the first time we went to Parola and her name is Daniela. And she just takes the best care of her guests her breakfast are amazing. Her combinations are not expensive, but they're terrific. They have everything that you want beautifully located in the little village. And I just think it's right to stay in choose also very good at making recommendations in helping get reservations at restaurants, or wineries, that you may wanna visit and stuff, she's very helpful. It's a great spot. We love it. Excellent. And then what are we going to do with? You said, we're gonna do. Five days, staying here in this home base. And what are we gonna do, so we're going to start in Rolo you're going arrive get settled into your bed on breakfast? And then start wandering around the town. It doesn't take very long Berlow is not a big city. There's not a lot. But you're gonna love the cobblestone streets in the narrow little alleyways in the views of the vineyards the hills are close together. And there are so many buying said it really looks like a patchwork quilt when you're standing on one of these terraces in one of these villages, you're gonna explore what you see you're going to see winemakers with tasting rooms, if you'd like to stop in that great thing to do. You're gonna see little cafes where you can stop in an have glass of wine, a little cheese, a little salty meat. But the best thing to do on the first day in our opinion, is to go to a wine shop. In Barolle called Levy carcase and stuff. No. And Elizabeth ta will teach you about wine in a way that I've never experienced any other wine shop anywhere, and we go to a lot of wind job. He brings out a map. So if you order a wine, he will recommend different things that you might try than when he serves a line. He brings out a map and shows you where you are where the grapes were grown and talk about the terroirs how the sun hits it, how the soil effects, the grapes and things. It's a really good idea to get a good feel for where you are. In how important the grapes, are there. He's fantastic we go back and back and it's a great winning. Kick off your stay. If you're trying to get a feel for the area feel for the winds important there. And so BA Rollo small village really there's not a ton of shopping or stuff to do there. Several an attacker's places where you go taste wine. But the regional ano- tech is there. So a lot of these villages have castles, and Barreau does have a castle in the basement of this castle is where the regional ano- Teke is saw NO tech, as a place that sells wine they have all the winds in the region, and then up above the castle. There's a little wine museum, and there's a cafe up there. And we love it as our spot where we stay in go out from me where there in may twenty fourteen and we did not know at the time that it. It was the same week as the release of two thousand ten baruelo wine, the bro of integer, and we didn't know, but we haven't upon this, and someone said, you should go to be tech us. Oh, we took their advice, and there were over a hundred but Rollo producers represented with their open bottles of wine on the tables, and the attack. And all we had to do was to go to the counter and for fifteen euro, they gave us a glass, and we could try all of the wind that we wanted to try. Over the course of this, and a nap the first day as really. That is exactly what we did. But it was great because we could taste them all. And I think it's the first time we started spitting wine. We weren't very good spinners until that point. But we would taste it. And if we didn't love it than we actually would don't vote out. And then when we found one that we did love, we would pour a glass and actually sit down at enjoy it. So it was really special experience. Excellent. Where we're gonna go to mixed after we've done our tasting are nap. The first day where we go on the second. So the thing is you can explore each one of these other hill town, so they're four others that are part of this specific wine region. And what we absolutely love to do is to hike to another hill town, you sort of have to choose, which one you wanna go to next. But if you hike to the beautiful little hill town of more, it's the highest town. So you're going to have spectacular views in the five. It's is probably the biggest town in this got this beautiful panoramic view from it. So from the top of you can see the five towns that we're talking of plus several others, you can see down into the valleys, you can almost the whole albuque- on a clear day is just spectacular. It's really, really nice. And this town is big enough that there's a little shopping to be done. Beautiful restaurants. Again, there's a, a nice church. There's an older church. It's not used as church. Anymore that always has artwork in it. There's communal NO Teke, there that just has wines that have grown around the city of Laura. They're really knowledgeable in Kentucky about wine from their specific area. Favorite wineries is located air. So you could ran a tour to visit at the also have a tasting room that you actually can walk into a lot of the wineries. Really? It's best to make a reservation ULA to before you go. But this one you can actually walk in into they will host a tasting right there. Mark rainy is the name, and it's kinda special for us because on a very first, visit the first night when he sat down to dinner. This was the wind that served than suggested for that night. We loved it. Then we still love it than a great place to visit. When you're in the more, I will mention that. If you hike from Rollo to Lamar, it's uphill. Okay. Very seriously. I mean, it's a great high, but you just need to know. And then, of course, very steep down on the way back. But if you're at the right time of year, there are cherry trees, and we've been known to them ago, tears off of the cherry trees, that end there they have fruit trees by the great fines, because the diversity in agriculture helps the grapes ruling. Oh my gosh. Those chairs delicious. Limit looks like we're talking about something like an hour long hike loose Google maps thinks it's an hour long. Okay. Our on the way up our coming back..
