"Got to call me. And then Monty Williams can't have that same kind of approach to this. He's got to be like, I'm the coach. We find out where he is on this. I'm shocked. I truly am. Yeah, I read a little bit more about this. It appears that ayton wasn't just like back in The Bahamas and not available to be met with ayton was spent the past three or four weeks in the sun's facility leading up to training camp. William said he purposely decided to leave players alone this summer to give them space. So they could have even run each other at the facility, they didn't have that talk. No, how about I have one conversation with you and then I'll give you all the space you need. I got to address this. Is this something that, hey, we're just not going to talk about it? As we move forward, we're just not going to talk about it. Yeah, more. That means you're asking for a real big blow up on the bench during a game where they're not doing well. And Monte gets on Deandre one time. I just don't like that. Doesn't make sense. It does not make sense. Especially since, like you said, you had all of this time to just put if there is anything there, just put it to bed. And you could have done that months ago. Anytime you've ever had one of these moments with your wife, and then you don't talk about it? And then you don't talk about it. And then are we going to talk about this? It's gotten worse. It never gets better. You never go, you know what, forget about it. So what? You know, that happened, no big deal. It never happens that way. At least the Phoenix Suns revenue owner. Great. Okay. All right. Yeah. I think I'd rather have these problems on the sun. The coach and the fire too much in the summer. Those are somewhat mediocre problems. We've been talking about Aaron judge getting intentionally walked. He was walked four times last night, so he's homeless now, 7 consecutive games. And he's been walked 11 times in 30 plate appearances since his last home run. I've been saying all morning long. I'm not blaming the pitchers. I'm going to blame the hitter or hitters behind Aaron judge. Because if you're hitting, chances are they're going to pitch Aaron judge. Most career innings pitched without an intentional walk. Anybody want to guess which pitcher has the most innings where he never issued an intentional no way in hell Nolan Ryan is doing that garbage. Second on the list. Yeah. 5386 innings, Nolan Ryan never issued an intentional. No way. Hell no. Yeah. You walked enough guys without trying to win. Careful. That is true. And I love Nolan. He didn't have to intentionally. Okay. This picture. And you know, next time I talk to Nolan on, I'm going to have him drill you with a pitch. Thanks. And I'm going to guess he could still throw at least 85. All right. This pitcher pitched 5404 innings. Without issuing an intentional walk. Todd, I'm going to go to you first. Tom Seaver. No. Seat already gets Nolan Ryan. Marv. Cy Young is no, no, si young is not on there. Pauly, based off the Nolan Ryan rationale. I'm gonna go bob Gibson. Bob Gibson, no. Sandy Koufax? No. Rhubarb baker? No. Three finger Brown? No. Juan maruchan. No. So Nolan Ryan is second, Gaylord Perry is third, Don Sutton fourth, Steve Carlton 5th, Greg Maddux is 6th, all pitched over 5000 innings and never in never issued an intentional one. This is the era that I grew up in. Phil Negro had the most innings without issuing an intentional one. That of the day here comes that one. See, I grew up when pitchers were pitchers. Not throwers. Now Nolan Ryan was a thrower and he became a pitcher. Greg Maddux was a thrower, became a pitcher. Yes, yes. Yeah, but those guys are obviously selfish and didn't care about the game because if they had done the right thing for the team to win, they would have intentionally walked some of those great sluggers they faced. Yes, Nico is too busy trying out new types of sandpaper to worry about. No, that was his brother. His brother. Joe. Too soon. He just goes like this. He wasn't there. He had his hands in his pockets. And he went, like, I don't have anything to show you. I didn't put that nail file. And the umpire turns his head watching in slow motion hitting the ground. This video involved. It does float away like this nail file. And he's like, I don't have anything. Then all of a sudden, no, you don't. It's right there on the ground. I fall blue with nail file knights I went through it on the crib. Here's something for you to factor in. I know, you know, Pete Rose is not getting into the baseball Hall of Fame. But his all time hit record, for somebody to approach this. There are certain records where you go that'll never be broken. Let's say you get 200 hits per year for 21 years. You still wouldn't break Pete Rose's all time record. Only one baseball player has ever had ten years with 200 hits. That player, Pete Rose. So you're asking somebody to do it 21 years, getting at least 200 hits and you're still not going to be surpassing Pete Rose. I don't think anybody's going to get that record. I don't think so. Plus, you know, the home run era. Well, wait. Is the home run era over? Or is it bad? I don't know if it's over or back because, you know, we've talked to these baseball guys and they'll be like, no, no, they dead in the ball. They want more like hit and runs and stolen bases, and I'm like, does that make Aaron judge a season even more impressive? If they did try to deaden the ball? Dead ball era. Yeah. If they're not going to pitch to him, it doesn't matter how dead the ball is. Thank you, Tom. Yeah, I said. All right, man, you are tough today. You are picking on Nolan Ryan. You are. Imagine the walks and the intentional walks, how many no one Ryan would have if you did both. We have a thousands of walks. We didn't intentionally walk anybody. No. Because he was too busy. He struck out 19 and walked 14. On the infield and after it would just be sleeping because the balls never went play. Albert breer is going to join us coming up here. We'll talk some football with him. Back after this and the Dan Patrick show. If you own a business, we know it's been a bumpy ride. Fresh update on "phoenix suns" discussed on ESPN Daily

"I think I'm in agreement with selling a team. I think that's the best outcome for everyone involved. The players, the fans, the staffers, everyone that was impacted on so many levels. That's James Jones, general manager of the Phoenix Suns, speaking Monday for the first time. About the fact that his boss, Robert sarver, has announced that he's going to sell both the sons and the WNBA's Phoenix mercury. It brings some closure to a long period of discomfort and uneasiness. But it also gives us a pivot point to continue to focus on raising the standards of our organization and leading by example. Sarver had been the focus of a massive ESPN investigation that triggered an NBA investigation that finally triggered a one year suspension earlier this month. After the league confirmed a history of misogynistic and racist acts, which is why sons point guard Chris Paul immediately found that suspension insufficient. And why Paul spoke up again on Monday too. It was unfortunate. Stuff going on in the workplace, you know, is really unfortunate. It was tough to read, and it was disturbing. And so I called up my colleague Baxter homes, the ESPN journalist whose original reporting provided the entire basis for the NBA's investigation. Just to check in. If I go back to last November, 2021, when our initial investigation dropped, I remember in Phoenix, they kind of went into a bunker mode of, we'll see what happens, we'll see what the investigation finds. Our job is just to kind of focus on basketball. Watching the sun's media day, the tone felt kind of dark. I texted with a colleague there who described it as almost a funeral, and I was noticing how when the players and Monty Williams and James Jones were asked about the findings in the report that the NBA commission and about the specific language, the treatment of women, the use of the N word, the overall conduct. Some of them, it seemed really had a tough time squaring that with the person who they had interviewed with, who brought them into the organization who had been in charge, signed the checks, so to speak. Right, that's what Devin Booker, their star guard, basically admitted. You know, it's tough for me because, you know, that's not the Robert cyber that I know. It's not the robbers sorry that welcomed me to Phoenix to welcome with open arms. But at the same time, I'm not, you know, insensitive to everybody that's involved in this situation. While some of the players talked about not knowing that this kind of conduct was taking place or they didn't necessarily experience it, they spoke to staffers and employees who in the NBA's report and then our initial investigation described enduring levels of misconduct and trauma and the ways in which it upended their lives. Watching the sun's media day, you heard people use terms like disgusting in terms of describing some of the findings that were in the report. And I think employees were wanting to hear those kinds of things, you know, feeling that their voices were heard and that others on the court and who have much larger platforms would speak for them. And now, there is going to be a sale of two franchises that suns in the mercury. Expected to stretch deep into the billions and it's monumental. Robert sarver, the owner of the Phoenix mercury and the suns has begun the process of selling the teams. He said it in a statement. Server was suspended for a year and fined $10 million last week after an investigation found he used the N word at least 5 times, had been involved in unfair treatment of female employees and bullying behavior. So today, we go inside the latest twist in the Robert sarver saga. Why it happened. And why this story isn't over yet. I'm Pablo Torre, it's Wednesday, September 28th. This is ESPN daily. Traveling for business and don't know where to stay. Well, you could crash on your friend's couch for a solid, restless night's sleep. Or you could wake up on the bright side with la Quinta by Wyndham. Start your day with their free bright side breakfast featuring delicious baked goods, fruit, eggs, and waffles. Then fire off those critical work emails using their free high-speed Wi-Fi. And when you need a stress break, power up your buys tries, lats and traps at their well equipped fitness center. Tonight, la Quinta, tomorrow, you triumph. Book direct at LQ dot com. So back start, do you want to be very clear about this? Your reporting is the reason we're here today. It's the reason why this all unfolded as it did because you broke the story back in November and you reported after talking to more than 70 current and former employees of Robert sarver that this was a workplace that was not just toxic, not just hostile, but something that was staggering in its breath in all of these ways ranging from allegations of racism and misogyny. And it led to the sons themselves, the organization attacking your personal credibility. They said that the team had, quote, retained defamation council after it became clear that mister Holmes reporting was plagued by journalistic failures. End quote. And now a year later, Robert tarver was suspended, he was fined. He's selling both of the teams, the sons of the mercury, and I imagine you've been hearing from people that were your sources and possibly new ones since all of this news broke. What's it been like in terms of your inbox and those conversations that you've been having? Overwhelming, the amount of people that have reached out, both the day that the NBA's report came out, and then every time there was a development, and then the day that Robert announced he was going to be selling both franchises, there was certainly a state of shock, but there's kind of a range of emotions and it depended on the day. When the NBA announced their findings, some

"Theme whenever they get that done. And I don't think they have the rule in place that you can't play if you're a part owner of the team. But we've seen the league get around this and all these different ways. I don't think expansion will happen until after the probably probably the year after the meteorite still, but it's happening. It's going to happen. So if you look at the league right now, the talent says, yes. But there's room for expansion. Yes. But the economics don't really, because there's still teams that are taking a lot of revenue sharing money. There are not 30 healthy markets. And so the other thing is, and I had an owner explain this to me and this is not a financial podcast and I'm not, I don't have an MBA. I don't work for Goldman Sachs, but the NBA owners have been able to borrow money pretty effectively in a pretty favorable rate. And so when they've needed access to financing, they've been able to get it. Yeah. And so to them, the even if they get the Phoenix Suns are going to from what I can tell from talking to folks are going to blow people's doors off what they sell for. I said that last week on the pod, I predicted four. What did you say? Four four. I am not going to dispute that. It's going to be over 4 million. Or 4 billion. So when I first came out, I thought it would be, I thought it would be three. And I have been educated that I, I mean, there are people who are like, oh, you know, they may go for over two. And I was like, you're not going to over two, they're not even going to take return your phone call. It's four or 5, four or 5 range. I did four four to be safe, but I think it's between four four and four 7. I'm not disputing that with you. So if that's the going rate for the Phoenix Suns, the price for expansion, you know, which, you know, this makes the league very nervous. They get upset when you talk about expansion. But obviously there's a huge thing about expansion, which is that you don't have to share the money with the players. It's not referred to as basketball related income. So yes, sir. If you get $4 billion from two expansion teams, let me just do a little math. No, let's go, let's say, let's say four and 5. Let's go crazy. Let's say 9 million for the two teams and they cut it up 300 million a team and they don't have to share that with the players. Right, so it's voting. A lot of the teams. But so here's the thing though, like, yeah, but they're diluting their shares of the league. They are, but not if they put stuff in where you don't get the stuff until 5 years, you get to participate in the meteor. There's ways to do it to make it favorable. So I think like a year or 18 months ago, when money was really cheap when these guys were borrow, were able to borrow now that now borrowing isn't as cheap. Yeah. And we're about to see, I think, and you think that we're about to see another big burst in franchise values. Like we saw the big burst with the Clippers, but then we haven't really, I mean, obviously the franchises are still going from very high and these hedge funds are buying in for good numbers. But we haven't seen like the big jump. Well, we haven't seen one of the major teams hasn't been for sale. I said on Thursday's pod, there's 18 teams that are just different than the other 22. And Phoenix is one of the 8 and plus you get all the people that they can live in LA and they can fly an hour and they're at the game. That's right. You can fly back and forth. So you're getting all this California money. That's a whole different animal. Yeah, the really rich guys did not want to buy the Timberwolves. No. They just didn't want to buy them. They were more than the one 5 though. Hold on, we got to take a break and then I have a couple more things for you quick and then we'll go.

Why the Markets Are Falling Like Flies

"The Dow has plunged over 800 points after hotter than expected inflation data. I don't understand why people still lying about Biden in the inflation reduction act or whatever they call it. These people lying to you, man. They don't know what they doing. It's like, it's like that kid that's steady crying, I could do better than this person if they just give me a chance. That person ain't even doing y'all right. I could win the game if they just put me in the game. They haven't prepared. They haven't done nothing. They have no skills, they just talking. Then you put them in the game and get burned for an 80 yard touchdown. This is what the Biden administration is. Oh, Donald Trump is not doing right by the cut. Oh, so he's so divisive. But instead of them actually being good at what they do and preparing and having an actual message other than I hate Trump, I hate Trump, I hate Trump. Then we wouldn't be in this situation. They came in with no message, no method, unproven tactics, and just hatred towards Donald Trump was their campaign strategy. And that ain't in people's money is looking funny and changes looking strange. Inflation is out of control. The interest rates are going up. I'm not saying it's going to be like this forever, ladies and gentlemen. But they are increasingly becoming more and more of a contributing factor to people struggling in America because of stupid decisions.

"I want to, I want to continue with this NBA thing because I don't know what happened I wasn't there. But I could only imagine in the woke climate that we're in today. You're talking about out of 18 year history of this particular owner owning the suns. They went back over 18 years. And in the headlines, they say he used the N word. Not being honest about the fact that he's using the N word only to recant or recount. I keep saying we can't. So recount other people's statements in which they used the N word. And then they talked about inappropriate, he made inappropriate statements against women in the way they look. I need more information. You're saying that he looked at a woman and made a comment about how good a booty look. Now, if he said something like that, then hey, he in trouble. But knowing the way these things work in the social justice nature of these investigations, he may have said it to another guy and said she look good the other guy said I know I'm gonna get her number later tonight, but then he in trouble for saying it. He ain't trouble for initiating the conversation like that. Oh, he's too mean to people. What? Are you serious?

Phoenix Suns' Owner Suspended a Year for Workplace Misconduct

"Ladies and gentlemen, this NBA story that Nick brought to me my producer actually had it ready for me. I can't believe that the owner of the sons is being suspended for a year and fine $10 million. I'm going to read to you this investigation that they did into his what? 18 year period of time is being the owner of the suns. 18 years. Let me tell you what the investigation yielded. says that the NBA said in a statement, independent investigator found, I think his name is sarver. I think it's how you say his name. The solver engaged in conduct that clearly violated common workplace standards as a reflection as reflected in team and league rules and policies, the conduct included the use of racial insensitive language. Unequal treatment of female employees, sex related statements, and conduct and harsh treatment of employees that are that on occasion constituted bullying. Let me continue to read. According to the NBA, an investigation found that the owner who was also the team owner of WNBA team that you never heard of because nobody's watched the WNBA, repeated the N word when recounting statements of others. And at least on at least 5 occasions, he used the N word recanting the statements or recounting the statements of other people. So if Johnny used the N word, he's retelling a story in the N where it comes out in the story because he's articulating or explaining what somebody else said. Favreau J eggs. A society.

The Root of Inner City Crime

"You had somebody like Colin Kaepernick, take a knee for the national anthem. For police brutality, but he don't take a knee during the national anthem to bring awareness to black on black violence in the inner city. To the education system failing in the inner city to fathers and mothers not being married, sitting their children up for success in a two pair of home, he ain't took a single deal. His knee having hit the ground for none of those things. And then when I get on the radio and say it, people get mad at me. Oh, are you ready? Are you uncle charm sell out? You always talking about black people. Because I'm looking at the numbers, people. I'm looking at the doggone numbers. You look at any year, a black people getting killed by police. And you say, you can't argue about the dudes with guns, shooting at the police, so they don't count. And then you talk about unarmed individuals just 'cause you unarmed them and you're not a deadly threat, but we could just for the sake of argument. We could say every unarmed black man shot by police is an unjustified shooting. Just for the sake of argument, we're talking about an average about 14 a year, 14. A year. You talk about 7000 a year murdered by other black men. You just do the freaking numbers.

Lynchings in America's Inner Cities

"We'll get back to the topic of this violence that occurs in the inner city. And I don't understand why our country presidents and we're not having an outcry. As much as COVID, you know how many people in the inner city per CAPiTA are getting killed. How many young men are trapped in a gun and gang violence? And we just, if for decades, I'm going to give you a statistic and this was fact checked. People today cry about racism, slavery, and the plight of the white man against the black man. Now, during slavery, I don't believe we have any record of how many slaves were killed. I would argue that more slaves were killed once they were released than were killed in slavery. Why do you say that, mister Tatum won because I went to college and I learned about African studies and then you put two and two together with logic and you say that they had to purchase black people as slaves. And so if you kill them, you're really throwing away your money that can not be recoverable. So many times they used to work them beat them, abused them, but they did not kill them because they needed them to work. After slavery was abolished, they had no use for some of these black people, so sometimes, in some cases, they would be killed indiscriminately. If you look at the legacy of lynching in America, there's about 3400 black lynchings in the 68 year recorded history of lynching in this country. And could there be more? Yes, there could be more that wasn't recorded. Could the number be off, it could possibly be off. I would extend to you, we should double that number. We could say that it only is half of all the lynchings in the 68 year of lynching. Let's round it up to 6000 lynchings. And we'll run with that. The entire 68 year legacy of lynching in this country, let's say that there was 6000 lynchings of black men. And that's me doubling it up. You look at the violence that occur in America today, mostly in the inner cities, you're talking maybe between 6, 7000 black men murdered by other black men in one year. And one year,

"So his girlfriend posts a picture on Instagram of them eating at Roscoe chicken waffles. But she geo geo tracked the location or she tagged the location through geo tracking, right? So she tagged that she was at a specific Roscoe's chicken and waffles in a specific area and people who were following looked at her pose and was like, oh, this is where he had. So they ran up on him, and they stole his chain and they killed him. I don't even know if they took his jury. I think they just ended up killing them and renting and running. Some people were speculating that the girlfriend may have had something to do with it. I don't really know that to be true. I mean, he had a kid together. She wouldn't want the man to die. Or did she just want somebody to steal his chain? And didn't expect him to die. So I don't know that to be true whatsoever. If you ask me my opinion, I doubt it, it's just as crazy out here. This is a different level of violence, ladies and gentlemen. This is a different level that we're talking about. You look at anywhere else in the country. Do you see country music singers get robbed? And killed in broad daylight. What is it? What is it that is so different about this culture? What is it that is so different about black culture in America? And I'm not saying it's every black person 'cause I don't live in that culture. I don't go to the hood. And people on social media criticize me. I'll be, you ain't know where you ain't in the hood. But it's still doesn't take back the fact that he's dead now. He was I don't think he was married at the time. Maybe somebody said husband. I don't know if they were married or not. But he meant something to somebody. And a lot of people follow them, they thought he was a good rapper. I never heard of him a day in my life. But the scenario really struck home with me because this happens time after time after time after time. And then you have to ask yourself this question. When I asked me the question, I'll give you the answer. You say, well, what happened to him? How did he die? Another man, and I would bet my life that the guy was a black man. Another black man goes up to him in a rosco chicken and waffles restaurant in the hood. And demands that he take off all of his jury and give it over to the suspect. I guess he refused or somehow he got into it, and that guy shot the rapper multiple times in the chest, leaving him for dead.

They're kind of mirroring each other defensively. So what I'm really fascinated to see is how Boston's offense and Tatum in particular and Jalen in particular respond when they're not there's no walking into pull up threes. Like you have to make like Miami gives up a lot of things because they over help on drives and whatnot, but. How they cut off the head of the snake again, can they do it three times in a row with three great players? That's what I'm really focused in on and honestly. Over the past few years, the Celtics have put jaylen Brown on Jimmy Butler. As the primary defender, I'm predicting that grant Williams is the primary defender on Jimmy Butler. And I think that that creates a lot of problems for the Miami Heat because great Williams, I mean, if you can keep Jimmy out of the paint and stop his penetration and kind of keep him on the perimeter, it takes away so much of what he is excellent at, which is the drive and kick. And then once the drives once he kicks, then the ball's moving, then Miami's offense is really flowing and that's when they kill you. And grant moves his feet. He's, he's as stout as anybody playing right now, defensively. And he is really difficult to get around. And he can switch. He can switch on a bam and neutralize that. He can switch on to basically anybody in neutralize it. So in those situations where they do switch and let's say Al Horford's guarding bam. Can Jimmy just have a great series going one on one against Al Horford. I feel like that's just like a win for Boston or even if you put Tatum on bam and make either make the heat run their offense through bam against a pretty good defender. There's just so many, the options that Boston has defensively really make them hard to beat and if you can't beat them on the offensive glass, which Miami could easily, they could do that. That could be their whole strategy. Panning offensive glass or if you can't create turnovers and beat them in transition, like getting in the half court, you're just dead. And it's going to take a heroic series from Jimmy, frankly, I think, for them to prevail. So that's what I'm looking at. What are you looking at with this series right now? I actually had a lot of the same stuff. So jinx from that standpoint, one of the things one of the things that really stood out to me about the last series obviously was how heavily Oladipo was leaned on. Obviously Lowry was out for the better part of the Philly series. So you kind of had to go somewhere else for your point guard your backup point car your ball handling stuff in the moments where Jimmy didn't have it. So Victor was really, really key from that standpoint, if only to give Jimmy occasional breathers from having to have that role, the guy was playing his heart out as far as getting you 35 a night or whatever it was. Bam can obviously take some of that responsibility, but we don't know how Lowry is going to look. If he comes back, when he comes back, if he comes back and he's, you know, can get around for a game before he's banged up again..

"I don't think they had enough to win this series, but I was a little bit surprised that, I don't know, maybe bud was hoping for lightning in a bottle with grace now and after what he did in the last series. But I just thought, did you kind of feel like there was something else you would have tried here? I don't think so. I don't think jovan Carter is the answer against the wall. You know what I mean? But George Hill's not either and I felt like we'd seen enough of him to know he's not the answer or to try something else. Javon Carter was getting garbage minutes. I don't know. Maybe we're probably too deep in the weeds over it when it just was Middleton was maybe just the key thing, but yeah, I think that if your bud, you know, I think look, I think that the roster was just compromised. I think honestly it goes back to two decisions made by the front office and ownership. Not bringing back PJ Tucker because he is a critical piece for when you want to go small. You can't go small without players like that. They try to with Bobby portis, he just was not effective offensively. And every time he was on the floor, Jayson Tatum haunted him in the pick and roll and had pretty good success for most of the series. Tell him so that he'll back off my tweet, fam. But you're right though, whenever they went small, but that's difficult to do too. Putting out us at the 5 and makes them super fast. It makes them spaces the floor better for them. It's just a matchup problem. It's a matchup problem against a solid matchup issue. And he eats grace and Allen, he eats George Hill. You have jaylen Brown who could do the same thing. Wes Matthews is overextended. There were so many plays offensively, especially in crunch time where Wesley Matthews kind of forgot he was Wesley Matthews, and it was to the Celtics. Benefit. The other decision that they made, you brought up Serge Ibaka. They had Dante de Vincenzo. They didn't have to trade even shenzhou. That's a player that they drafted. That's a wing who they did not win the title he was on the team technically, but that he was hurt when they won the title. And I just think his value was miscalculated by that front office. And I know that they would have had to pay him. This summer, but that's another question for ownership. And weird things happen when you win championships without a player though, because then you start thinking, oh, well, we did it without them. So why pay them? That's probably the way an owner is going to think. Right. But that logic does not apply to PJ.

"So it's kind of like they didn't have Chris Middleton. He'll likely be healthy, you'll assume he'll be healthy next year. They still have Giannis. Pretty much everyone on the roster is coming back next year. You have Bobby portis who has a player option he'll likely decline. You have pet Connaughton who was tremendous in this series. Shot the ball, great. He has a player option that you would assume he'll also decline and I think he has bird rights so the bucks will be able to pay him whatever they want. But with the bucks, you never know because there could be a PJ Tucker situation as well. We'll wait and see. But you know, I don't know if this is like a fair take, but I kind of feel like we'll potentially look back at Yanis career. And we'll think that he left golden opportunities to win at the highest level on the table. You think about 2019. Losing in the conference final as you think about 2020, he sprains his ankle in that series against the Miami Heat and they go down, obviously last year they win the championship, and then this year they go out in the second round again. And it's just like this team is the trade that they made to get drew holiday. They sacrificed basically all of their future assets. Their cashed out, brook Lopez is 34. Chris Middleton is not young. Drew holiday is not young. And I don't, you know, it's going to be really hard for them to kind of tinker. They're fortunate that they had Bobby portis, who won them game 5 with that offensive rebound. They're fortunate. He stayed on the team because he could have cashed out as well. After last season ended as a free agent. So I just don't know where I mean the bucks will still be very good for sure. But do you share in my, I guess my concern a little bit about how this is kind of playing out for Giannis and whether or not the bucks can get over the hump again.

"It's just not the same. Going forward, pitching it forward, post Chris Paul. He's just he's so important for your organization. And if you don't compensate him and make him feel good, then I don't know if you're able to recover there. So a sign in trade could be something that I see happening. A team like Atlanta could get involved San Antonio could get involved in a sign and trade. Charlotte? I don't know. I'm thinking about it. I'm thinking about like teams that would love to have somebody like that. Look, I mean, it'll be interesting. We have to see what happens with Utah, obviously. I don't know what they would trade to make it happen. I could imagine that Rudy Gobert may not be there. I'm thinking about a team like the bowls who I don't know how they would make it the gymnastics of it work. But booze like to me, I think you saw enough from their season to realize that he's probably not the guy. Is your 5 man, but somebody like ayton can give you enough defensive credibility there. And he gives you an offensive option that can make mid range shots and score at the basket with his back to the basket in a way that can do that, but he's not really, he's a defensive liability sometimes, certainly in a series against the team that shoots through. But you feel like that would be such a mistake. I'm sorry. For the bulls? No, no, not for the bulls. Oh, for Phoenix to not the guy. If you're even having a conversation about it, it's gonna be offensive to him and his folks. Aside from the fact that he's relatively homegrown, I know it's not true, just in terms of where he's from, but he played at Arizona. And you're right, it's funny because to me, I even worried that wondered at the beginning of the season, when ayton missed some time and before Kaminsky got hurt and then obviously JaVale and different stuff. And what was the player what's the guy's name? He's with Indiana now. Jalen is a jail Smith. Bad. It's been a long season, man. My bad. Every single night, as you said. Yikes to James Jones, not yikes to you. Oh, okay. They've had so many they've literally had four guys that have all played well when they've got an opportunity to play. And based on that, if you're, I don't want to step inside Robert's service head because I'm not sure what I would find. But aside from I always want to save my money being a key prevailing thought, the other one is, well, what leverage do we have? What argument do we have in the holster that we could use here to not pay a max? And if Phoenix is the Phoenix that we've known them to be sometimes, they will hold some of that data and utilize it and say, and maybe it was part of what they were trying to utilize when they were saying that they didn't want to maxim this past year and give them the extension before the rubber would meet the road. The other centers had played well. So the idea that you're basically arguing that it's like a relatively interchangeable spot where we can get anybody to play well here because you're playing with Chris Paul and you're playing with Devin Booker and we've got a solid defense and we've got shooting around you, that's true, but there's a difference between ayton and those other guys.

"Team, I don't know how much of your question was about him or kind of just the team in general. Yeah, it's about the team. Can the team win the championship? Ayton is such a big question mark here. Which, by the way, in Rohan was out there and was in the media room when this was said, I didn't see it as far as the video, I probably should have watched it right before the podcast. In terms of how stern, I guess, Monty Williams wasn't in regards to the question about why ayton was pulled last night. They're not why, but yeah, I guess it was why..

"Of course check out our backlog of team previews headed into the year We are rounding out into shape. I think this is a gosh. Like the wearing the final four. Now i think just about and i'm really psyched to bring is retort. Returning guests who. I always enjoy listening to their pot and just talking with them as well. And it's a salmon. Mike from over at the time podcasts. A phoenix suns podcast. More like the phoenix suns. Podcasts concern boys how are you doing. I haven't talked to you guys since. I haven't talked to you guys on pod since the nba finals are just before it How are you dude. We're doing great. Thank you thank you so much for bringing us back on. Yeah i mean. I it from day to day do well. I will say. I'm excited about this. I've said it before. We were on another similar. Podcast previewing the season. And i i said i just. I'm in various stages of grief depending on the day after the nba finals. but overall. i'd say i'm doing pretty well. Yeah i'd say it's an pass grief. I've talked myself into a into whatever's next. So i'm just kidding watching jalen smith summer league tape and hoping it means something you know. Tape doesn't mean too much but yeah if anything Yeah i mean i. I hate to just drive the knife to actually before we do that. I'll ask you on the positive note. What was it like for you guys as as people who cover in fall team and our fans like what is it like To see this team gulf from where they were to the nba finals. Because just on a human level. I think that part gets kind of swept under the rug times like i'll never forget when i grow a cavs fan but like seeing lebron come back in twenty fifteen in. The team goes to the finals. After i went and sat courtside and saw a juror. Jack dion waiters starting backcourt. Because hirers out for the game. That i went there. He'll be out for more games this year as well. But where are you guys out with that Coming into the year. 'cause i feel like that's a good reflection point. I think that salmon. I are actually probably good people to ask question because we met watching the worst sons team. Search like samina were were around watching when they were winning. You know. nineteen twenty two games. A season and i kind of a unique experience to be able to follow devon booker watch essentially every game of and And then see where. The team wasn't how awfully worried. How much heat. He took throughout that time and then see them the first time he makes the nba playoffs to go all the way to the nba finals. It was pretty remarkable and it was really fun and i think As far as on a personal note it was a learning experience for us and covering the team in the pump in for the podcast Because you know obviously the playoffs two different. Of course we watch every year regardless of if the suns are there but following a team so closely and being able to see the nuances and the changes from the regular season to the playoffs. I think was was really eye opening and fun. Especially because We salmon. i didn't episode after every game. And you had to really detailed into that so I really enjoyed it. I had a great time. I was really proud of the team. An unfortunate ending. You know hard to hate jaanus. Of course he's easily to like But unfortunate ending overall pretty remarkable experience. I think the i feel like we just learned so much about playoff basketball. I'd i'd like to believe that. The entire suns fan base. I'd like to believe kind of got a little bit smarter during the playoffs..

"Personal life your professional life and is you thought about. You would go interview for jobs and you get a sense of the questions. People probing you on the things. They wanted to know the doubts they had about the doubts they had about you as a head coach. Where you too rigid were you. I think you heard them all. I think you would hear them in the questions. People ask you. And i think you would hear it whether they talked your agent. Spencer breaker talk to others around you when they do the research on you. What was that sort of journey like for you. And i am going to stay true to who i am and the principles i believe in that is my way to coach that works for me but also are there tweaks to it. I have to make an. I think you went through a lot of that inbetween orleans an and phoenix. Yeah i mean what would you. There's a lot bear in respect to the narratives that were going around about me and my coaching style and things i did or said ultimately embellishment there were things. I was shocked at some of the things i heard. I said i knew that was an accurate. Then some of that stuff you have to some fires you have to put out in that way because things take on a life of their own. Yeah they do and there's only so much you can't control. I would have people in the know. Walk up to me and tell me what they'd heard and you know those things bothered me because not because people said them. They bothered me because of the people that believed him. You know those are the times where you're like well. People don't know me and that's okay. I'm not here to be known by everybody. I only wanted to coach and go home. I never wanted to you know. Do all the stuff that comes with coaching but ultimately awards If the players. And if people that i work with felt that way about me it's on me to Help them understand who. I really am. and i also have to admit it you know. In in some of those instances they could be right and in some of them they were and you know. It's humbling when you have to. You know judge yourself and be straight about how you did certain things and you know. I had to get to a point where i had to learn how to be effective overwrite There were times where. I felt like i was right in certain situations. But sometimes when you're right you're not that effective and i wanted to be an effective coach and i hadn't had enough success or one enough to Overcome that and so. I think the thing that probably helped me change And grow was When i lost my wife and i realized you know there's certain things that are much more important than than being right and I knew how badly. I want it to be a head coach again. I knew how much. I love the gym. And you know it's the only place. I really wanna be in the gym but had to figure out how was i. Gonna you know improve so that i can be effective. I can't be ore approached the leader. That i need to be and When you hear things about yourself especially when you're a head coach You know it bothers you. Because i know my intention and i know how badly i wanted to serve in love and and help guys get paid and when games and all the stuff that we get to do and yet it wasn't coming off that way and so that was the part that bothered me was like man. This is what i really wanted to do. And somehow some way. It didn't come off that way in the only person that i could look at even though i felt like a lot of those things were true. The only person that i could affect and change was myself what was an example monte of one that whether it was former players of yours or staff you went back however you look back at something and you seem pretty sure you're right about it and you look back and said i'm going to do that. I've got to do that differently. Was there one that stands out where you or. Maybe took it a longest to get to accept. I'm gonna maybe do that differently. Well i talk to a ton of our players. You know after i left me orleans and i was in different positions as assistant invented management. San antonio. I was traveling around scouting in going to college campuses and go in the nba games. And i'd run into former players. And i i asked him. I said hey you know. I want you to shoot me straight. Tell me what you thought and Don't like you're going to hurt my feelings. I wanna know. And it was pretty consistent There were guys who were like coached. We love you. We knew you were trying to do but there were days where you made us feel small and that was the part that bothered me Because i didn't know that.

We always talk in the hallway. i'd see him at usa basketball events. Our relationship didn't change. It got stronger in the story that You know when people ask me about chris and our time away from each other. I think the thing that sums it up was. My daughter was working with the league. At an all star break she was basically doing grunt work and doing all the stuff that interns do..

"Here with monty williams. The national basketball coaches association coach of the year this past season and the coach of the western conference champion. Phoenix suns monte. How're you doing well Thanks for having me on. It's pretty cool to on your podcast. And i enjoy listening to it when i get a chance to and hopefully we can have a same conversation hard when you talk in the me. Well that that's not the case. It's funny i remember. We've we've done a couple of these. But i remember being in phoenix with you. I think there was a workout in phoenix Some kind of pre-draft workout and we were both there. And i think we taped one right when you the job and that feels like it's been one sprint blur pre pandemic. And we've all just sprinted through this i. I'm curious monte coming off the finals. And how you're supposed to feel in the aftermath and i'm guessing that you're still thinking about game six seventy seven to seventy seven tied going into that quarter. Is that like sort of the. Is that where your mind. Still say's or stays or you. Can you see the bigger picture of of the whole run or are we still too close to it. No i think you're spot on Gone back to that moment. A ton the past few weeks trying to figure out you know anything that i could have done In that moment because all you have to do is win. One quarter which is a tough task on the road against a The best team in the nba. And you go through a ton of mental gymnastics and try to figure out something you could have said or play. You could run or an adjustment and You know that that's something that will probably stay with me for a long time. But the people that i've talked to who've been in that situation When i've talked to them they you know they talk about the natural process that they'd gone through and that was a part of it. You know going back to those moments I go back to a game. Three preparation to get ready mentally emotionally for that game. Felt like a probably over thought it in regard to the preparation just because we lost. We'd have won that game. I probably wouldn't have thought about it at all but because we lost You know just ruminate about it a ton and You know the irony. Is you know we beat them. Four times in a row. They beat us for times in a row. They just did it at the right time. And you know that's something that As as a coach and as a leader Will bother me for a long time. But i think it will also drive me to be better in those moments. If i'm afforded that opportunity again monte they had jaanus playing at a level. I'm not sure we've ever seen him play. And that's says a lot given he was a two time. Mvp and all defensive player first team all nba. all the things. He's done but he certainly took it to a level in the finals. Offensively certainly defensively. He was all over the court making plays. But and i know you you you are not an excuse maker but you know chris. Paul has had wrist surgery since the season ended and he wasn't himself and he played through it. He didn't make excuses. he didn't lean on it as a crutch none of you did. But it is a factor. Isn't it it is i mean you. You'd think about all of that stuff when your emotions settle. But in the moment we've always been at least for me and i got this from tony dungy When i've listened to him and read his books you know you have to have the mindset of being no excuses no explanations of the bottom line is you have to get the job done You know people didn't know that book. was dealing with a hamstring Deal in game three and he got all kinds of flack for what he couldn't do what people didn't understand was. He was basically out there playing on one leg and those guys because they are tough in never want to rely on Excuses wouldn't say anything and that part bothered me. Because i heard all the stuff that was being said about devon chris in the finals and at the same time. I'm sure if you talk to the staff with the bucks. They would tell you that you know chris was dealing with this was dealing with this and They just happened to win. But i you know the injury piece especially the deal with chris. Wrist the that happened in the clipper series and he never made one exclusive about But that's always. He's been for a long long time. And i'm sure you know all the stuff that he heard is going to drive him in his workouts this summer. And i'm sure devon fills in the same way you mentioned preparation monte That preparation for game. Three what is it. Like as a head coach and for coaching staff to go through the gauntlet of first round conference. Semis conference finals. Nba finals the constant decisions. The little decisions you have to make on the way to the big ones. Which is i guess. It's a lot of do. We continue to stay with what we've done. What we believe in that we can execute better or do we need to veer off and maybe do it differently. There's a thousand of those decisions every day. I'm sure as a head coach. What is that. what did you learn about playoff coaching. And how you make decisions when you go through a playoff run like you did. That came within one game of winning an nba championship..

"My god steve. Bomber would love to get his hands on those jean shorts lately and that little ad. That was a little funnier good. Let's get is this news. Yeah is this news headlines for you. Guys like a teased it. Let's talk. Paul george a little bit more. Cbs sports clippers. Paul george questions. The narrative of me not being postseason player a lot to say about this lee. So is this news. Paul george saint come on you know stopping already. What do you think it's it's not really news. I suppose because. I think part of the reason why he has the reputation has his because he talked so much in. The media. Started remembering the okay. See with hey you never heard of playoff p before you're about to see it. And then he had a bad series. And i think that's the problem with paul george reasonable normal baseball fans. No he is a superstar. He has had his moments in the playoffs where he hasn't been a superstar. That's also what happens to almost every playoffs star at some point. I mean you guys know. Kyle lowry up close from when the raptors fondly made the playoffs. After all those years. I remember he was garbage in those first two years. The raptors got knocked down in the first round. Now he's maybe the growth so it just shows that over time that that narrative can change phone paul george if i had to say anything. Don't say just. I worry about what you see on the internet and what people say people just want to get their jerks off and it's kind of like because you joined the thunder and then you went to the clippers. People are like okay. This is an easy target. And then he bites on a lot of that stuff as well. So but paul. George is a superstar in the league finished fourth or third and mvp voting just a couple of years ago. He came back from a devastating injury which could have potentially ended his career. You know it's never gonna change. People are always going to go from game to game. You have a good games like yet. So he's not he's not a bust. You have a bad game people. Just going to keep on piling on you. That's just the way it goes on social media. That's true but i will say like after last night's game he didn't have a good game. Paul george and a game. Six and again. I think the excuses fair guy seems tired as hell. He played massive minutes but there felt like there. Were less people piling on paul george last night so maybe he has shook the narrative a little bit. Trae where it's like you know he. He did a lot of it to himself. Like likely said. I agree with that. But i didn't see a ton of like paul george sucks. Where was he in in a must win game. And maybe that's because he had the awesome game five to extend the series but i think it's it's diminished a little bit and it should because he was pretty damn awesome. Posey no doubt. Paul georgia's signature playoff run especially once kawhi leonard went down. He saved the clippers season a couple of different times and just wasn't able to do it for what i don't know i guess it would probably then the fifth time if he did it last night against the sun's obviously didn't have a great game but he did have a great game five but like we said he gave himself the nickname playoff and then he got bounced from the playoffs by joe ingles. That's what happened the same year. He was a top five. Mvp candidate say less. Look at what kawhi. Leonard does man that guy gets no criticism from anybody because he never says anything and also look at chris. Paul we used to have a b roll for the starters called chris. Paul boehner's that we would run every single year when the playoffs came around until you get to the finals or like hit a playoff buzzer beating. Game winner this is going to be the narrative. It's like charles barkley set like charles. Berkeley is the perfect guy to speak on this really as an all time. Great who never won a championship as a great player. You're going to get criticized until you do something special. Paul george has done a lot of things. That are very very good very cool. He had a great playoff run. And i feel like he's got more people on his side now then he has in the past couple of seasons but until he's got a ring finger or at least in appearance in the finals. People are gonna remember him being playoff be. What do you think test. These guys covered it. Nobody can really celebrate the accomplishments of a player. Talking about chris paul. His nickname is the point. God but all people could do for several years this point out his misfortunes how he did come up short in key moments But yeah he runs the show. He runs a team so so well. He's had sixteen years of showing why he's good. There's only thirty teams in the nba. Most don't win it most. Don't even come close. But he's he's there now and pg can just take that as an example. I mean he had a great run. This postseason when you look at his numbers so so good to be going twenty seven nine and a half rebounds like he was really really working at yet it a great weser conference finals. He didn't shoot it from three all that well but yeah. He ran out of steam. I mean if you have somebody if you had quite beside him probably could have been different. Yeah it's you know. People just need something to poke on so when you when paul george gave them the red meat of calling himself playoff and not performing of course people are going to gobble it up. I mean yesterday. People were to too interested or watching the chris. Paul show and watching the phoenix suns. Celebrate so i think. That's why paul george didn't get. It didn't get the criticism they had something else to focus on. And that's why for a moment. People understand paul jurors great players thirty one. I think chris. Paul is a good example that you can carry this into your mid thirties. Even though as we mentioned this guy had that injury seven years ago but he bounced back to have alpha nominal postseason as was great and he said this is one of the best locker room sees ever been in and it showed those guys work together. Played really really well together. Paul george showed how frigging goodies. Those numbers are great. Those those numbers are phenomenal. Yeah i think the part of this does he..

"But i also thought chris paul you could tell from the jump that he was going to be playing a little bit differently in the first half like tasks that only ten points but he had four assists and he got the andrei and going ten points seven rebounds in the first half and for de'andre eight and felt chris. Paul was getting into the pick and rolls a little quicker and making it a point to get eight in the ball inside eight and played with a ton of force. That made the clippers kind of have to play. Andre demarcus cousins a little bit with zubaydah being out and once that was the case once cousins had to be sticking eight and role in the lane. Chris paul's jumper. It was there and you know. He didn't shoot a lot of threes through the first couple of rounds here after he hurt his shoulder against the lakers but he built up enough strength from shooting. All those mid rangers finally start hitting some threes. And you could just tell. He was locked in the coolest of games. That chris paul has ever had. I think he would have to say sending the sons into the finals wearing the orange jerseys. That's on the list for jersey. That's going to stick around in nba history even if it's not a classic jersey. So yeah special. Stuff from chris paul to raise the level of the sons and to basically say. We're not losing this one. We're not going back to phoenix and having to win it in seven here so caps off to chris. Paul and that was a giant hat that man had on his finals appearance. That is the biggest hat i've ever seen. It was like almost like one of those russian hats but it had a bill on it as well. He deserved it. He could've warrant overhead are headphones that we have on right now. Leyla just think of the game. And the and chris paul going for finals here. Well the wound going to give up but as tuscaloosa to sit afterwards he felt that even in that first half. They showed a few mental errors. That sort of lead you to believe that all these these incredible play of run they have going on did sort of start to catch up with them and they needed another huge effort. If they're going to get back into this one. But chris paul was not gonna let that happen. It was like you know what. I am closing this series at he tonight. I'm not taking any chances. He hadn't been good in this series up to that point but then he was like. There's just no way. I wanna give the clippers anymore life anymore chance in this series and i think you could just thought to say the clippers just like man. We've done a lot. We accomplished a lot coming back from in in all three series here. We've kind of been written off. We haven't had a chance to sort of just just to get a little rest in at any point and it was it was going to be a factor at some point and as the leads would apart up to fifteen tonight and then twenty points. You could just sort of sense that like it's not going to happen to not like the sun's deserve all the credit this morning especially chris paul but honestly the clippers have really. I think improve their reputation as well because way. The playoffs started when they dropped those first two games at harm to the mavericks and it was like man. What a joke. These franchisees in these players are to get to this point where they forced the game six. I mean they could have given up in game five. But they didn't game without kawhi leonard. There i think was so impressive. So i think todd lewis done a great job. Paul george did a great job. You know younger players like terrence man. He he had some performances throughout the players that great but it was just one too many mountains to climb last night and credit to the sons. I deserved it. They've been fantastic these entire place and when you think about what happened in game. One of the playoffs against the lakers. We wanted. Maybe chris pull out of done some other injury and the sons martin out of even got ahead of that first round but he did so. i think. Even if you're a chris paul hater and there are still still some out there that he doesn't make it easy sometimes the old classic flopping last night with but but if you're a basketball fan you have to respect the you know what these has given to the game over his years and at thirty six to be doing what he's doing at this level is is an incredible incredible fate you know. He's bounced around a couple of times. He's been a superstar and then it's kind of been like you know. He had a year and oklahoma city. Which will like blast. I took the rockets to seven games there. But it's like chris paul oklahoma city. That's where he's sort of careers taken him now. He finally gets a chance to make it to the nba finals where The sun's going is fiber. I definitely think no matter who they play. Quarter vantage regards. Actually they've got they've got at least a week off you. These other teams have got to play minimum. Two more games and both those teams have got their superstar. Banged up so i'm really happy for chris. Paul i just think he finally got to where he deserves to go and it didn't collapse for him as it has done in the past where he's led three one or learn things at the end of games. Instead chris paul it went in his way and he took control of that game so i think it was great to see. What did you think lali of when when things did get a little tricky there..

"And they produce more. You're always going to be better position to at least have a chance to win right and i get doesn't always turn out that way right. It doesn't always turn out that way in a positive light. But at the end of the day right that wasn't big determining factor so for the jazz right to recap. What are their keys right. You got to win the three point shooting battle. You got win the points in the paint. You've got to win the little things right and you gotta play as a team and play with elite level chemistry for the clippers. Though is going to be paul. George has to be consistent he has got dominate the glass. And you guys guy dominated three point shot right and you gotta play Donovan mitchell and another key for the jazz is they need the health adult mitchell at least be okay and they need mike conley an back in a need. The guys bogdonovich o.'neil and angles to continue to play consistent and go forth on the rim and on the glass otherwise. They're where they're not gonna win these games right and that's at the end of day. Stop by look at what. I'm determining these teams. We're a quick commercial break here. But when i come back we are going to break down why i think the phoenix suns. The phoenix suns are in position to get to the nba files. All of that coming back up when we come on next segment of the gmc basketball podcast brought to you by gmc podcast network. I'll see you guys shortly..

"Think made contact on a screen for the first time against the Phoenix Suns in the bubble took his entire rookie year to make contact on screen. But yeah man so I really like Aden where he's gone and I'll give a shoutout to aaron bands for the screening because actually. His rookie year was not a great screener. He'd Kinda shy away a little bit this year you sending brick walls green. So I think a lot of that Danes is like the master screeners I think he kind of took a step out of that. So I mean I know you're big into you draft prospects and whatnot guys do have the number when you what do you think is the best option there or realistic best option. So I love Devon this Especially, if you're moving on from Uber at a great insurance he's like Mikhail bridges light in A. So that'd be fun to watch to Macau Bridges Petty Sense I want. But I don't know if they'll be there him and Killian Hazel to guys I think for the sons and then as a core makes sense to for the same reason with you know Uber Insurance and then tires albarn can make some sense a secondary next to booker because I do i. do think Booker's better suited off ball kind of now but he can play Boswell so he could take some of that burden off Taliban she's not a primary but. They could kind of share the role there Patrick Williams I think would be really good long-term fit next into just like a secondary rim-protector, a smart player can shoot the three. Yeah. That's those are pretty much. My top my top five right now in terms of like where they're GonNa be picking her realistic. Yeah no I I'm still I'm diving draft for the first time in like tonight actually after start pulling through games because I've been so busy with other stuff but from everything that I have seen I agree with that. One thing I'm interested in is making sure that Gilbert is can be a three even like not that not that you can't be but I think long term I think it'd be better for the team. Overall if they can get somebody who can be like Patrick, Williams and kind of it's hard guys who do that obviously but I think eight and with another longer forward next to him instead of having three wings in Booker like that better as well. After get change of Pace Ford just because you need mandate versatile wings as you can. You need quicker ones bigger ones especially the playoff series that's ultimate goal so. Having a ton of different looks to counter. are still are still we're still early on and then so going into free agency though do you have anyone who you want the sons particularly target in terms of looking at the bench? names out say Joe Harris's one guy I think is..

Booker Patrick Williams A. So Phoenix Suns Aden Mikhail bridges Pace Ford Macau Bridges albarn Killian Hazel aaron Joe Harris Boswell Gilbert
