Gabrielle Palmas: Surviving a Midair Collision

"Thanks for joining us. Thanks for having me. You were in an interesting situation and you and I were Were chatting about it not too many people have survived a mid air you did. Can you tell us all about that absolutely so thankfully not many three hundred? Our pilots have experienced talking to the FAA and the NTSB but In October twenty twelve. I found myself in that exact situation to give some background. I fly out of Phoenix and a few different airports here where we have some of the best flying weather in the United States and in the world so with that comes a whole bunch of traffic air traffic. We have eight general aviation airports within thirty nautical miles of each other. And there's a lot of international students here with training academies and things tend to get busy when it's a beautiful day outside a very busy area. You've got all the airport you mentioned you. Of course got Phoenix International. And just outside of that. You've got Luke Air Force Base which is a training base for the Air Force. So it is a busy area. Everybody trying to take advantage of that beautiful Arizona weather and along with that. We have very limited approaches that we can do when it comes to training. So there's only one I alas in the area that were really allowed to navigate by and the only other two are at Phoenix Sky Harbor and over it Gateway Airport so along with that we have a lot of intense training traffic heading down south to this one particular airport. Kasa grind and their sister when were transitioning through these areas on top of that we have practice areas so it gets to be a little crazy when it comes to all of these training academy airplanes in one spot. So there I was. I was up on a training flight with my chief pilot on a stage. Check to progress to my next step of training in my instrument and as we were flying and transitioning out of the practice area and heading toward the airport for practice approach. We were in that scary spot where you're not talking to either frequency yet. You're in the process of changing your in the process of getting yourself situated for an approach. So there's a lot happening. I was under the hood at the time and my chief pilot reached out for the controls and turned to the aircraft and dove down as fast as he could and we ended up hitting something and my initial thought was. Maybe we hit an airplane. But I'm thinking birds. Birds are probably going to be the best scenario here right birds. It's fine just birds and he told me calmly. I need you to take your hood off and I need you to look around to see if you see them so there was with the thought process of. Oh my gosh. We hit another airplane with people inside of it. Wow that's another level of intensity there you're under the hood you feel an impact. The instructor says take your hood off and now you take the hood off. You're just trying to get total laissez on on now having vision. And where are you? And I can't imagine that it was a fear of looking out to the right side. I can tell you that. Why is that where you felt the thump? Come from yes okay. The impact was from the right side of the wing. We lost three feet of our wing and a Piper Warrior and had no aileron control whatsoever after that. So not only. Were we trying to see if the other party survived? We were also trying to figure out. What do we do now? Do we get this aircraft on the ground as soon as possible. Yes okay do we. Head straight toward the airport. Because at that point we were aligned directly toward the Chandler airport where we're based or do we make smaller turns to head toward an abandoned airstrip. That's on reservation. Land Not really monitored by anybody but also much closer to us and less traffic possibilities because we were also thinking okay. It's just the wing but it could also be the landing gear. It could be the engine stopping at any moment. We don't know what else has been impacted. About what altitude were you guys in terms of AG L? When the collision occurred at about four thousand feet. Okay and it's a an awkward altitude to be at because you're in the process of shooting practice approach and not yet on with approach. But your right at that altitude Should you be at the five hundreds or should you be at the thousands? What are we doing here? So that was the most difficult struggle for us to is that. It's a transition point where you're descending from one to another but with us. We had just leveled off to start the approach and start talking to traffic control so I remember a styling in. Instead of contacting approach. We contacted our local tower because we figured that the local tower might have these guys up on their radar and they have a better internal contact to get down to our flight. School emergency services in the local area Chandler versus talking to Phoenix approach which was much further away. So all of these split-second decisions were being made. We didn't want to fly over houses. Were dealing with an airstrip in the middle of nowhere versus airports but the airstrip is closer. And how do we do this? We manipulate the airplane. Just using rudder so I can tell you I am beyond grateful. I wouldn't be here today. If my chief pilot had not been the one in the airplane with me because this man flies great lakes he flies pits he flies aerobatic and knows exactly the limitations of an aircraft especially in a state like this so immediately of course he was on the controls and once we landed We couldn't use any flaps obviously coming in because the Aileron had been jammed so much into the flap system and we just took every precaution. You're sitting there thinking about going back to the basics when something like this happens. You're cracking the door open. Just like you're taught in training your hands on the fuel selector valve to make sure that you're shutting that off as soon as you touch down you just go into that mode that we all practice for over and over again in emergency training as student pilots. All the way up to professionals know at any point. Did you ever see the other airplane? We never did air. Traffic control finally told us about a minute before we land that they were able to see them squawking seventy seven hundred so at least we knew at that point that they were alive before we landed. Okay but you hear the collision you never do. See Them. You're focused on flying your own airplane. The instructors got control of the airplane. Did you guys do a controllability check talks about now? You've got this airplane. You make the decision to go into Keila River Memorial. I think you mentioned on on the reservation. Was it relatively close to you. Where you just a few miles away from the airport. At that time we were so we were just a few miles to southeast of the airport. So perfectly lined up with the chandler that we were checking back to so. It took us about fifty to ninety degree turn. I can't remember the exact amount in order to get lined up with the runways that are over at. He'll river for us. During that time it was a matter of okay. Let's take a look. See what we can actually do. The airplane okay. The rudders are fine. Ailerons can't do it okay. What about flap controls? Nope totally jammed. Can I ask you? Did you know that were ineffective? Because you tried to use them in. Couldn't or did you just look out at them and decide? We're not even going to try that. Nope we tried to move the yoke around and nothing was working. You could move the from full left to right and nothing was working. Got It so no aileron control but you do have good pitch control and good rudder control of course The engine still operating normally correct. Okay and you're at four thousand feet above the he'll river memorial. So you looking at the map here you do. What looks like probably a left hand. Turn and begin. Descending towards the river memorial is that right correct it was get on the ground as fast as you can power idle since we have zero flaps worse case scenario if we're high weaken slip it and just pray at this point though we get this thing on the ground safe and you have to do much turning or you rudder over in the direction of he'll river and you were pretty much set up on a final approach there or how did you guys do that. We were essentially on a long final at this point. Enough time to get stabilized and pay attention to how we were going to muscle this onto the ground. And how did you do that? Did you fly a pretty fast final because you were? I mean who knows what your real stall speed is now with three fear wing missing out on the right side right. How'd you handle the approach speed somewhat? I remember I remember My chief keeping it pretty straightforward and S. Just saying. You know. It doesn't matter how long it takes us to get stopped. We're going to aim toward the beginning of the runway. It's a relatively long runway because this airport at one point was used for aerial firefighting. So they still have some DC. Six's that are. They're just kind of abandoned so we knew we had a lot more room to work with and no houses on either end unlike the Chandler airport so we figured we just need to get close to the ground. We'll get it on the ground and then however long it takes us to get stopped and situated. We'll figure that out as we go. Yeah so it sounds like you keep your speed up. You came down and realize you had a long runway. The winds can get pretty strong out there in Arizona were the wind factor at all. Thankfully not because this was October so October is some of our most mild weather in Arizona. It's the transition period between when we get all of those storms coming in. The monsoon season has wrapped up for the most part and then October becomes that seventy degree weather until we reach March. Beautiful Time of year to fly out there and so That was a lucky break for you that it happened there when you're not worried about the heat or the wind or density altitude too much so you guys came down final. Kept your air speed up. You come over the runway and then just from there as normal as he could make it around out of flare and touchdown correct yet as normal as we could make it and as soon as we got on the ground immediately. Shut everything down. Fuel selector valve turned off and get out of the airplane as fast as we can just in case and I can't tell you how fast we both dropped to the ground just to make sure that both of us were okay that you know okay. We're on the ground. It's fine now. We can start thinking about everything that comes along with this.

TSA officers are finding more guns than ever before

"The number of guns discovered at airports has reached new heights the TSA says in twenty nineteen its officers found more guns than ever in the agency's eighteen year history over forty four hundred guns were found at airport security checkpoints last year about twelve every day that's a five percent increase from twenty eighteen what's unclear is if there are more guns in carry on bags or if the TSA is just getting better finding the ones that are brought to airports the airport's leading the list of most guns found Atlanta Hartsfield Dallas fort worth Denver Houston George Bush intercontinental and Phoenix sky harbor

"Okay now sell sell do you really think do you really think the both over and left are going to pull out and will not serve Phoenix sky harbor come January if the council votes to to pass this fee increase tomorrow I I don't know okay I'm love for real I really don't know their large companies you know what I mean but they're just you know sooner or later businesses if you tax them enough you make over regulated too much sooner or later they start making other decisions so it doesn't surprise me that they're even thinking about it and that actually concerned everybody if they end up pulling away you know this becomes a watershed moment for a lot of the politicians because not only in Phoenix but people throughout the entire savers under remember their names no different in the help feels that occurred several years ago and thought about it people remember those people that make those kind of mistakes impact this many people again Phoenix city councilman sal diss CO joining us right now the the re vote would be tomorrow so great I want to game theory this out let's say the vote goes sadly as might be expected tomorrow this of feed this tax would go into effect January one and uber and lift stand by their guns and say we will no longer service Phoenix sky harbor airport we know that super shuttle is also out of the out of the mix on that written what does what does the airport look like what does Phoenix sky harbor look like with no ride sharing options people will still find a way to get there Bruce it is going to be a major inconvenience of a total screw job on the public is what it is I mean that's what's gonna end up happening in you don't blame businesses sooner or later I mean we've got garbage tax increases we got water rate increases general this piling on and the or people end up thinking I'm not I give up I'm gonna go somewhere else and so what you end up happening on situations like this you end up driving people away your end up pushing people out and it makes it harder for the average Joe to be able to get to the airport the people that use uber left or people that you know just can't afford a taxi if they don't have the family support system to be able to get to and from where they have to go on their destinations and why we should you have to call family number why should you have to call a friend we can get you know you should be able to get the places in a reasonable way we have something really nice here at the city of Phoenix and the politicians want to screw it up you know I think that you you touched upon something their cell again we're talking to sell this a CO Phoenix city councilman who's gonna be voting tomorrow and the fee increases to ride sharing in over and laughed at Phoenix sky harbor and that is Phoenix is a very transient community a lot of people listening right now or from someplace else and may not have the family members to take to the airport so I think that's an interesting now that you just touched upon their but there's something else and this item that your counsel's going to be voting on tomorrow then I think it's been lost in the mix of all this conversation of the five dollar drop off for you the five dollar pickup fee in uber and left and that's a nugget with in the agenda that talks about how the aviation director would be able to set the fees for parking and later on down the line you know the increases that we may see for over and left and and it was interesting to me sell because currently right now is that not the council's responsibility it is the council willing to give that kind of responsibility over to Phoenix sky harbor yes yes in the US so it's it's all correct and you're the only one I mean the only one to catch this right now Pamela we've talked about it but no one seems to think big deal it is a huge deal because now the airport director can indiscriminately raise these taxes on the public without having to go to the public vote not just public or two eight council elected officials not remember our bond the politicians boss is who the the public right we can always look back and say okay well I don't have any decision that I didn't got that L. court directed at that some faceless bureaucrat and national politicians are doing skirting their duties because they don't want to take responsibility so example here right now we are getting hammered by the public to say he don't we don't want to lose over left we don't want you to raise this behind us we don't want to the taxes on that right if it comes though if this vote goes through the way it is then you're going to have somebody we are going to be able to say oh that's not my responsibility and it's pathetic it's so so I got a question you should be responsible you are hearing from me and by the way I don't think our unique in the sense there are people that are in favor of the of the tax don't get me wrong but it strikes me that a majority of people are opposed to this unique tax on on uber and left so what's the constituency on the other side who are the people lobbying inside the city council saying this is a brilliant idea right right great point again purrs so you have the inside bureaucrats because we need to find sky train or this new thing that's out there that this other website project right so you have an internal mechanisms basically staffer so we want the money we're gonna need a for other future things in and said we were willing to throw out of room left right so you have that many of the contractors that are dependent upon this money now I know those guys I know well but that doesn't mean that they're not dependent upon this money you know so they want to be able to do other projects with this money so you end it's a circular thing that's it the insider game versus the outside it's the same thing you're hearing on both the Democrats and Republicans they're both saying the same thing they're saying look the insiders of controlled for so long this is an insider game they're the beneficiaries from the US Sally we have more questions for you but you know whatever you need to stick around for second great we've got the city councilman sal this issue again the vote is tomorrow on the new tax on uber and lift which you may never pay because you were live say they would just stop servicing the airport is it a bluff who knows we're gonna have a few more questions four sal as we get ready for this city council meeting tomorrow we'll do it right after Bob Maclay gets caught up with our top stories.

"In the morning every week day I going with Jim sharp and I give them my a big queue here it is over is threatening to end service to and from Phoenix sky harbor airport if the Phoenix city council votes to increase the tax imposed on ride sharing companies what do you think will happen because there's gonna be a vote on Wednesday fifty seven percent say the council will vote to impose the tax and then get sued over it yeah I think so okay it's going to happen by the Goldwater institute Monica well the Goldwater or another watchdog group like that what a bunch of criminals on the Phoenix city council by the way why do we have to waste this much money to change what they're going to do that that's what's frustrating to me do they not know that they're breaking the law because we voted on a proposition that says no new taxes for services and then the Phoenix city council they redid the dumbest people in the world or they just don't care that they're breaking the law and they're going on with this ridiculous vote that's gonna that's gonna inconvenience all of us in the valley that we cannot take an uber or lift to the airport or from the airport which is just asinine it is one of the dumbest things I've seen in a long time in the valley and I've been here a long time and these guys are about is just don't be as I've ever seen I was just amazing I it's amazing they don't have a brain in their head well it could be that their advisers didn't tell them that it could potentially break the law yeah but you can't you can't blame it on your adviser yeah but you can't expect the Phoenix city council to know all the laws their politicians they should know the law I know this yeah they should know the laws and if they're breaking the law they should stop what a stupid move these people are gonna make on a daily they won't make it I think I'll make it yeah I did too okay so much hope and I'm now mmhm no no no no speak you poll question of the day KTAR dot com I'll be on the gym tomorrow at eight fifty three let's see we talked about this local story last week couple minutes it's the NA you shooting and people are like well we and then it happened like five years ago yeah I have been in two thousand fifteen it was a a student there was a scuffle late at night and of one of the students fired shots and killed a twenty year old kid injured three others and this thing's been going on you know this case since two thousand fifteen and I think it's you yeah I know that it it what what two thousand seventeen they couldn't figure it out so very hung jury they going to re try it again so it's not gonna be first degree murder for Stephen Jones who's the kid who shot some people it's gonna be second degree okay can we just trying for second degree and get this thing over with and punish him that's what's going to happen because the defense said Hey look we're filing a motion to dismiss the first degree murder charges for reasons I won't get into the weeds all right I'm in this state said well wait a minute if we do that this thing is going to drag out for ever it's never going to finish victims are going to have any resolution whatsoever so tell you what we will go ahead and reduce it to second degree murder and then you forego the appeal that you had before and then we can go forward and have a trial on this and they're there for it takes death off the table yeah and you mentioned the other day that this is this is pretty common and I'm like wow it's been five years in the M. figure this thing out you're like well it is a murder trial these things young drag on for years and years when you're also pulled victims so yeah this takes a long time and that gone are the days where you can do it a trial in six months.

How are you? Enjoying the rain in the cold. Handle this morning. A bit of a break. Every once in a while, we get we get we get sun the other three hundred sixty days out of the year. I'm all right with it. Right, right. We'll take it. Well, we can start an- and taking a look at some of the pictures the video the reports that I've heard how unusual is this storm. I mean, it seems like a big one, but put it in perspective for me. This is going to be a significant storm, and we could see some record breaking snow amounts in the high country with this storm. So the forecast is potentially one to three feet of snow along the Mike ram. And that includes like flagstaff where we could you know, he could approach that three foot, Mark. So this again is going to be record setting flagstaff, for example, for this date, the record I snow on this date is nine point. Hold on. I'm looking at my numbers. Oh, sorry. It's ten inches today. Right. So already I've seen a report the flagstaff airport getting around ten inches. So I think we've already tied the record and there's much more on the way so record setting snow and then for the valley, we're talking potentially some record rain if we get some of those support cast amounts that that we're looking at potentially tapping an inch in some spots in the valley. So the record for Phoenix sky harbor at the airport point seven three inches of rain for today. I'm forecasting between three quarters and an inch the quarter. So it's very possible that we'll see record breaking rains. So that in itself is going to be significant we're talking to ABC fifteen meteorologist Irish Emerson right now on the KTAR newsmaker line, and I've already gotten the Facebook messages from friends of mine. A it's going to be an advocate weekend up. In snowball, we're going to leave early Saturday morning head up there. So that they can get some runs on the mountain with all this snow for folks listening right now that are enjoying the rain here. In the valley, but are now kicking around the idea of hitting up snowball on Saturday or loading up. The family trucks are wagon with the kids and heading up north to see some snow this weekend and play in it and build a snowman what.

"So something we've been working on since. I guess, you know, the four o'clock hour was the statement that Cindy McCain said on our show. On Monday, and we'll fill in the blanks here. Basically, Cindy McCain came on the show on Monday, and what she talked about was human trafficking because at the Super Bowl. What happens Super Bowl is a hub the sex trafficking spikes at a big event. Right. So we've talked to sending McCain a number of times, including when the Super Bowl was actually here in Arizona in the valley of how to stop it. How to recognize it so on and so forth. So we thought it was just a great reminder a great community service to have her on Monday to talk about you know, trafficking and how to recognize it so on and so forth. And then she dropped a story on us that we did not expect. We we we we didn't have any knowledge beforehand of how she busted somebody trafficking a child right at Phoenix sky harbor Phoenix police say that is not the case that did not happen. So here's what Cindy McCain told us that very thing happened to me in the Phoenix airport. Last Friday, I came in from a trip identifying. I bought it. A it looked like it was a woman of a different ethnicity than the child is little toddler. She had something didn't click with me. I you I tell people trust your gut. I went over to the police, and I told him what I thought they went over and splashes her by God. She was trapped, you know, a toddler. Yeah. Fodder. She was waiting for the guy who bought the child off an air. Wow. Yeah. Okay. So we got word from Phoenix police today. That on January thirtieth twenty nine thousand nine hundred approximately one twenty six PM Phoenix police officers assigned to sky harbor conducted a check welfare on a child at their request of MRs Cindy McCain during the check welfare officers determined. There's no evidence of criminal conduct or child endangerment. So we said what's going on? Why would send him McCain? Tell us this on the air. I mean, Cindy McCain is a trustworthy person. She she's not a politician big difference. Of course. Let me explain a politician you expect to opt you skate or have an agenda or tell you things that aren't necessarily true. That's just the nature of the business and worded in a way. So we're wondering did Phoenix the Phoenix police department? Get it wrong. Did see new McCain? Get it wrong. Well on Twitter. Here's what McCain is saying. At Phoenix sky harbor. I reported an incident that I thought was trafficking. I commend the police officers further diligence, I apologize. If anything else I have said on this matter distracts from quote, if you see something say, something, it's very vague. It doesn't explain how she said. The child was being trafficked, it was a toddler. There was a man waiting for the child to be delivered at the airport. Eight just falls apart. And I'm just I don't know how to I don't know what the game is here. I don't know what the end game is here. Cindy, McCain doesn't need attention. She doesn't need to get her voice out there or her name out there already out there. It's and it has been for years as part of the trafficking stopping traffic. Stop trafficking world. Okay. You don't need to do this. You don't need to pull some kind of shenanigan right or pull some kind of things you work gets people talking or attention. That's stunt doesn't do that. But then to come out and give such a vague tweet about. Hey, I think I commend the officers for coming out. I report an incident. I thought was you were determined when we interviewed you on Monday that it was a man was there. It was a toddler. I mean, you described the gender of the person you describe the age of the child you described that there was a person waiting for that child. And now you're saying, hey, I want I don't want to distract from. If you see something say some Kuchi have gotten.

"Becky Lynn on Arizona's news station. KTAR news. News ninety two three. You know, one of the great things about Becky Lynn is not only does she read the news just exquisitely. But she's also a great actress as well. She's been in a number of different plays that have been off off off way off Broadway. The TV show that you had a deadly dentists a scene. That's right. With an axe murderer. Yeah, I saw it wasn't a murderer. He's a murder not an axe murder. Not an expert who is a dentist. Accent's? Really good. Yeah. So you are in a new play. New production of something here locally. Yes. And I want to invite everybody to come first of all let me correct you. I'm not a great actress, I am just having fun. Okay. Everybody. I mean, you look pretty good in that last the deadly dentist. So this is fun. This is goofy fun stuff. Okay. Desert stages theater in Scottsdale. Does great musicals all the time and place as well is producing a show called disaster. The nineteen seventies disaster movie musical. Now. Does that not sound like fun? Does it does? Now, we remember the for those of us are of a certain age nineteen seventies had a bunch of different disaster movies. So you play on that. Yes. In a hilarious role. All the disaster happened at one time this crap blow up on stage because I'm there. Oh course. Okay. No, it's filled with seventies fund music. So. Yeah. So I am better. I'm having fun being in this just because it was a hoot. I just thought it sounded hilarious. Where's it again? How do people go? Oh, okay. So is it Scottsdale desert stages theater, which is very conveniently located right inside, Scottsdale fashion square mall. Okay. Okay. Can't miss it. And tickets are available online by calling the theater desert stages or there's also the gold star app. You can check out that Goldstar leg. Thank you. And that's what they say four weekends. Oh, and by the way, I just gotta say despite everybody telling me that I have yet to break a leg and for that. I'm very thankful. That's great. Oh my God. I never understood that. Anyway. Hey, go out and get a fracture. I mean who wants I don't get that. That doesn't make any explain to you. Okay. We got a lot to get to make sure you're ready down. And explain it to me. Speaking of of being scared as Becky Lynn was a breaking her leg. You should be scared. The next time you go to Phoenix sky harbor. Really? Well, that's what one person is saying. That's what one person who works. There is saying. All right. So we know that the government shutdown is in like, they whatever we did not really getting into the politics of it because it's just a bunch of toddlers in DC, they can't get along. Okay, fine. But are you safe when you get on a plane if you have let's say a trip coming up this weekend. Yeah. You're going to sky harbor are you safe in the air because some people are saying not really and one of them is an air traffic controller at sky harbor for some the uncertainties become too much. I put in.

"Babysitter in more far resumes. Look for ways to meet our quite until finally, we can say that we take lectuing from the public to disperse. To be no end in sight, but in communities across the country. Neighbors are also banding together to provide everything from food to legal services for struggling federal workers. We took an oath to keep people safe and to do our job. And if we're not going to be there to do it with. Debbie Terry is the transportation security officer from Phoenix she's pregnant with twins has two young children and on Monday. She went to a mobile food Bank that popped up outside of the airport where she works. Well, it was around eleven in the morning on a winter's day in Phoenix, which is pretty sunny and warm actually got really hot as Casey Coon senior field correspondent with K J Z Z in Phoenix. You know, everyone was kind of frantically rushing around trying to get all the food packed in within an hour. I think they were already more than halfway through and it was supposed to last for four hours. So clearly there was a need there. And it ended up I people were walking up to the tables to grab their food, but ended up becoming more of like a drive through. And then that drive through was like twenty cars deep. There are more than nine hundred TSA workers and federal employees that work at Phoenix sky harbor airport here in the valley, so Saint Mary's food Bank, which is the largest food Bank in Phoenix was able to create a mobile food pantry kind of like a one time food pantry at a site really close to the airport. So TSA officers could come over during their shift after their shift or before their shift or even on an off day to pick up two bags of groceries and milk and eggs. Saint Mary's served three hundred TSA workers on that Monday and more are being served throughout the week. They said that they've seen an increase of two hundred people a day since the government shutdown at their regular food Bank locations. This was a like, I said a mobile food pantry. So they brought twenty-five thousand pounds worth of food to this area near the airport that includes cereal tend chicken it included fruit bread. Peanut butter jelly kind of stuff that families would use to make lunches for their kids. And then they also had the perishables like milk and eggs. And the refrigerator truck connected. Before nice and made a lot of donations during that time, Jerry Brown. A spokesman for Saint Mary's toll Casey that the food Bank does have a stockpile of donations from the holidays, but that stockpile can only lasts for so long this food normally lasts in the food Bank until March or April, we're using a lot of it now. So they've been asking for cash donations because food donations from an individual don't go as far as cash donations for food Bank that need was on full display on Monday outside of Phoenix sky harbor international airport. There were a lot of TSA workers who still had their uniforms on us, and we're just getting off their shifts. There was two friends who had met while they were on the job at TSA at Phoenix sky harbor and both of them had two children under six years old one of them was pregnant with twins due in less than two months. There was a young thirty six year old Federal Aviation Administration engineer who was looking for other jobs because he hasn't had a paycheck. Check in three weeks and has four kids to support. So a lot of families and the age range from the thirties to sixties and seventies year olds and many workers are also reluctant to open up about the pressures. They're facing a lot of the people. I talked to actually didn't really want to talk to media because I think it is it does feel a little bit like hurting your pride to go in and take food. But basically they're saying that they're having to either dip into their savings to pay for things like the prenatal needs or just food on the table borrowing from family members borrowing on interest that they're going to have to re pay later. So yeah, I don't think anyone was necessarily preparing to not get paid for three weeks. So this is definitely stretching the budgets of most people. I talked to. Just.

Let's talk to one of the most knowledgeable people about the weather Irish air Maceo ABC fifteen meteorologist iris, it's high. I Rosa has certainly made an impact here certainly to say, the least this one is rare, Gaydos. I know you like these where record event, and that's exactly what this one is going to go down as so let me try not to nerd out too much here. But I'm gonna throw the headlines at you first. And then we'll talk about some of the specific numbers. Now today, we'll go down as the second wettest October day ever. So anyone's of October today the second wettest October day now overall when looking at every single day in the calendar year today will go down as the ninth wettest stay ever in Phoenix. And that's just taking into account the rain that fell at Phoenix sky harbor in recent memory, the number one wettest day Norbert you remember that when we had the flooding along. I ten has the number one spot. Right. So. We are behind that. But in recent memory today, the closest in wettest stay, again, the ninth what is say ever now so far too. We've got to look at the fact that we're just into day two of October. And so far October is going down as the fourth wettest October ever, and we're just two days in. So this is a significant event and one I think that we're gonna be talking for quite a long time for sure why man, I mean, it's crazy. So if it's the ninth wettest day ever in Phoenix. That is exactly what I said officially since since.

"News station. KTAR news on ninety two three SM. Get some perspective. Bruce St James and Pamela Hughes. On the seventeenth anniversary of the events of nine eleven a lot of people immediately. Go back to where were you? When did you hear what you remember? You know, for me, I was in New York on September tenth two thousand one I flew back that that that day. And it was such a juxtaposition for me knowing the New York that I left on the tenth and the New York that existed on the eleventh like they would never be the same. You know, what America has never been the same. I mean, you look at what all his chain in this country over the last seventeen years. I mean, a lot of which we attribute and then a lot of which we don't I remember when I laughed know Pittsburgh airport to fly out to Phoenix sky harbor to become a freshman at Arizona State University. My mom my dad and several of my girlfriends from high school walked me to the gate and stay there until I boarded the plane, and I could even still see them to this day standing in the windows. You got the gate. Wave goodbye to you as tears streaming down my face. I didn't know what you know was ahead of me in Arizona. It was a whole new thing that was going, and I remember that. But. You can't do that anymore. And that's one thing that has changed but seventeen years ago as a rookie reporter working in western Wisconsin. As in my first radio gig out of college. I never thought that like seventeen years later, we would be having discussion as to what does my child. No about how could you possibly in? How are you say kids today? I mean think about it anybody under twenty something. They don't have a they don't have the vivid memory. We have of nine eleven. Are you say like twenty-five, we've got, you know, supervisor Stevie Z and others who work on this program who were young. Remember watching it on television. Fully understanding, why are my parents upset. Why is everybody watching TV? So you ask kids. And when I mean kids, I mean, like elementary middle high schoolers about what they know about nine eleven, and you might be shocked there is this huge knowledge gap. And why do we have that knowledge gap while I think, partly it's parents problems, and partly it's education problems because there are a lot of parents who are uncomfortable having the topic discussed with young children. And I think you've got teachers who are uncomfortable because when they do discuss it, and they discussed it and factual form, and why were the towers attacked you're going to get into politics. You go down a path that that makes other people uncomfortable. So we asked you on our open mic line six zero two two hundred two seven three three. We kind of wanted to get an idea of what's happening around the valley right now, what are your kids know about nine eleven how old. Are they and did they learn it from you or do they learn it from school? I hear everybody say never forget. But keep in mind there. Some they'd never knew. Hi, my name is calling from Phoenix, Arizona. I have three kids the middle one sixteen and the youngest one is ten I had to teach my kids on my own because there are mentoring schools was too difficult compares complain because they did not want their kids to know. It no doubt books. We went to visit the nine eleven sites and we wear history on our own. Alright. So you've got a home there who has three kids who taught her kids about it. Because elementary school said it was too difficult. Hi, this is Connie from Scottsdale. And my daughter is a fifth grader, and she's ten years old, and she had an assignment at school to do a five minute presentation on nine eleven and at first I was a little bit surprised that she was asked to do that. Such a young age, but she watched a video from the library and got some information online and actually put together an awesome presentation entirely in Spanish, you know, what I get with the mamas saying there, you've got a fifth grade. I'm like, oh, that's a little it's a little much for a ten year old to deal with. And it's something that I even struggle with apparent BRUCE'S like how do you talkable difficult? Hard topics without. Children at what age is that appropriate? And they'll say, we'll have an age appropriate conversation. But what is that? We'll think about this. Also, we through this and their Google nine eleven. If kids go to Google machine or kids, go to YouTube. What are they gonna find not all facts? It's crazy. This is Mr. Rossi who is a teacher here in the valley who talked about that the.
