Google every once in a while so it'd be like well. You're not helping. I'm like it's not my job to headlight. i like. i'm not a walking library. Like i just feel like if you can like like last night i was on postmates for twenty minutes trying to decide which taco place to get tacos from. If you could do that for twenty minutes you could do that about like racial injustice. It's it's not that hard to take the initiative. And i think people want to have like oh i just had. There's no possible way. That i can sort of like dive into this. And it's like you just roll up your selena pressure but you just like you roll up your sleeves and you just pick up a book and you start with one book and lead to another book and then you know you start sort of taking what you're reading in putting that into your actions like it's not glamorous work work it's not easy 'cause it's like any time you get involved in any sort of justice space or sort of like just bettering your community you have to also realize the ways that you have kinda turned a blind eye to things that maybe you shouldn't have and so it's just about accountability. And we all have to be accountable. We all have to step up and do more than what we're doing. So that is my my new answer. Now as google it honey i am tired so google it i love it i love. I started laughing. When i saw when i read that i loved to. I also love how you're creating spaces for people and like you said earlier like you're really focused on women people of color. Lgbtq plus and. i think that's great and i. I really wanna know from everything you're doing and everything you're involved and what do you want your legacy to be so good question. I think i think i want my legacy to be that a. I didn't do it alone. That people felt seen and heard in that. This sort of like love of curiosity and sort of like this hunger in this appetite for just sort of like wanting to hear new perspectives in new voices in align myself to be changed in an educated. Like i think. I want that to be my legacy. 'cause you know i feel so lucky to be in a position where i can have this imprint in that. We're restarted develop. Tv shows that are reflect. More of what's going on in society. And i think that that's a huge responsibility but be it's sort of like. How exciting is it to be like doing something. That's gonna make people feel good or doing something that's going allow people be like. Oh yes i can get my voice out there like to me. That is probably why. I am such a workaholic. 'cause i i love that high of just feeling like i can like extend. My platform include other people who wants to be at the top by themselves. Not that i'm at the top but who wants to you know you know what i mean like. I mean some would say differently. I see what the top. Oh thank you. But i i love ambitious women damn straight. Yeah i really want people to feel like we. You're pursuing something you don't have to only just think about yourself but then there's there's so much out there that you can share it with others. Sounds my other dramatic. I'm also really excited to watch. Which you're headlining for amazon d- End of twenty twenty the yearly departed disley. Sort of the first in person. Sheep that i've done since quarantine like i really like. I don't wanna like go anywhere. Because i'm like really scared blah blah blah and. They took care of us so well like the covid testing the temperature like everything was like so on point but yet this comedy special really just wanted to be like we know this year has been awful is so many ways so yet is just really great to have all these amazing women just sort of like take down things have been like really crummy twenty twenty and try to make us laugh a little bit. Because i think we're all feeling so heavy is so weary that it's really nice to just like okay. I can turn off my brain for an hour and just have a good time. Thank god and we hope that twenty twenty one will be much better than this shit show you know. Better really cheese lewis. Well i guess one hand twenty twenty has sort of taken so much from us like our jobs you know our sanity but also on the other hand has given us the freedom to be panelists and i have. Someone's gonna see your hanes her way so you might wanna hey her way ladies and gentlemen that is not a sponsor so you know it's a balance like you're feeling this sort of freedom but also you're like sorta like just stressed the whole time so i'm hoping that next year will feel like will be more connected to ourselves and like things will just be better and you'll remember to put your cancel before i leave my apartment. "Agents were like emailing robert being like. Hey why don't you send me. This proposal would have loved to publish this and he was like i did and you rejected it. Yeah what did they say that they were just like you know like everyone's like oh okay. Well congratulations best. Luck of bob. All that stuff. And i just remember like they didn't like say anything about rejecting. Yeah of course. 'cause no one's gonna own when they do something messy right and so i just always remember that through like you know over the years. We'll just like how frustrated. I got that it was just sort of like no one believed that my work was worthy. Because i'm a black woman. And so i was like i really wanted to have an imprint where i could be a space that no one ever feel devalue. Because they're not you know why because we're not straight because they're not meal so we are our priorities. Women people caller and people in the queer community literary fiction essay contest. Short stories are kind of like where we're focusing on now for. Maybe the first couple of years eventually. I think i would like to get into why. Because i started reading why. It's really cute and fun. And it's been really great to sort of like have the support link penguin. Who's like the big overseer like they totally get it and they support it and my editor. Amber oliver's is amazing black girl and she's so funny and smart great so i'm really excited about the books that we have coming out My next essay collection. We the first book that's coming out and that's Next fall twenty twenty one. I was just gonna say like what are you looking forward to in. This must be it. I'm just like when. I'm not doing stuff like this. I'm just writing unlike. Yeah so beyond what happened in two thousand fifteen as a black woman. have your experiences been with publishing. I will say. I think has been really good about my publishers that they've always been really supportive and they always like really appreciate how hard i worked and so i think they wanted to meet me there but i think you know like most industries publishing has a way to go and i think that hash tag that came out over the spring publishing paid me. I think really made people see what was going on and seeing that a lot of authors of color were getting advances. That were like a half. You know like way less than like what you know. Maybe an author who's white is getting. So i think you're really sort of shine a light on publishing being like okay. We do have to take ownership over the ways that we sort of let these authors down and now we need to start course correcting. I feel like plume has really been on track with like doing that. So it's been great and sort of just understanding that like the perspective that i have is different from their's and that's fine but it has value i think the more different perspectives. That you have the better things are ultimately so it's like just do it. You know. I love it. I love it. Tiny reps do we. Can we call it. Totally tiny wraps. I love that. Okay tidy rabs so you also have also has a tv production company under abc. First of all lots of people in the pandemic were freaking out but this be robinson has her own show on comedy central coming out. Yeah doing the. And i'm not saying that she's doing the most. I'm saying that her show is called doing the most. Tell us what doing the most is about. I really started. Because i'm a workaholic. And as a result. I i So i really don't have a lot of life skills. I don't have tons of experiences. Like i've been waiting a tattoo for like ten years have gotten it. Don't how to drive Afraid of heights. I can't really cook that. Well like there's just so many i can't remember why i can't even do. I know it's a mess. Are you from the city now from the suburbs. But i was like such a nerd that i would just like. Stay home and watch tv. And like i didn't go to parties so a mass okay. So when you say i need to learn how to be a person because you quoted. I'm you know. I need to learn how to be a person. That's what you're saying. I don't know how to be a person. So each episode. Like with whitney cummings. She taught me how to ride a horse in in leg. 'cause i was always kind of scared of animals on mike. They're so unpredictable and she was like people are unpredictable. She's a animals make logical sense house. Oh that's true. So she taught me how to ride a horse sort of overcome my fear of animals and then tan france. He taught me how to bake. So we have like baking competition. And it's just really fun way to sort of interview someone in their element. Because i think so many times like you know your interview like on a late night show. You'll have seven minutes or you're doing like a you know a phone interview while you're like try and do something else. Is this like a shared experience. And it's like showing off the celebs in a way where it's like you get to see them like just killing it and maybe uncomfortable and still trying to have a conversation with them. It's loads of fun. So we stopped production halfway through shooting the season so now we're hoping that we can finish shooting it during cove it i. I don't know how but yeah it's it's been really think it's possible yeah. I think that there's like a lot of things that people are doing. Now that they didn't feel were possible even just like three months ago so i'm trying to think. Do you know how to rollerblade. Do you avid avid role. Oh my god can you teach me. Oh my god done. I actually once did a whole interview holding the woman who was interviewing me. I had to hold her hand while we rollerblade because she wanted to do something outside of the box. And i was like well. I guess rollerblades at night and she was frightened and i was warned. Like you know like we don't know if she can rollerblade or not sure enough. She had no idea what she was doing. Hand i'm there like this sweaty palms on the west side highway rollerblading. She's got like elbow pads knee pads. And i'm like i am holding this grown woman hand. Who's asking me like personal questions. As we went on the west side highway it was a whole moment. But i will gladly hold your hand on the west side highway. If that's where you wanna go. Okay i trust you okay. I dream guest. Oh gosh dream. Guest pry be rupaul. Much it would be so fine. I think what rule has done. Culturally is incredible. Like drag is mainstream like the average person knows wait is and can celebrate it like that was not case in so i just would bow down and teach me everything whatever you wanna do. I will do. But i just think that was so inspiring to so many people and that would be really fun. I have to shot my friends at revlon and my glam team for today's look my world class makeup artists the one and only katie. Jane hughes hooked me up and is using one of my favorite little tricks. She used the revlon color pencil and soft brown to contour my lips. I know it sounds funny to use an eyebrow pencil on your lip but trust me. It's the most beautiful condor was really nice about. This trick is that it just makes your lips look back much fuller plumber and still natural looking. Use the brown line shading contour and it adds that that contour and we use the tropical vibes. Pilots highlight and elongate the i and enhance natural shadows. I know it sounds like a lot but it is facts. My eye looks beautiful so every time. I put on the tropical vibes pallet. I feel like i'm on this tropical station..

"I'm going to be having in depth personal conversations with some of my favorite people on how they walk the walk of self talk. We'll find out about their pretty big deal moment. Absolutely nothing is off limits. So get ready are a guys. Today we are talking to phoebe robinson. She is a comedian and actress and a new york times bestseller and most importantly and overall vows. Maybe i it's without a shadow of a doubt. There's always some kind of technical issue and it just it just is what it is. Have you been Finding that with your podcast now it's been will the the good thing about my boyfriend is he. Is just such a tech junkie. That like if there's ever any hiccup he can figure it out in like three minutes. So it's like great. I look i couldn't do your producer. He's he he's my producer he added all the episodes. Like if it was up to me. I would just be like uploading to soundcloud. I guess. Like i don't know i. I don't even know how to do that. I'm thankful for my team is well thank god. We have t right. I how are you. I'm good if feels bazaar to be almost eight months into quarantining and feels kind of normal. Which unlike you know my families like no one. Has it like. I have no complaints. It's just like a lot of work but everyone's healthy so it's good. What about you you by a new baby in every ping I have a new baby. We moved grow. I was living in park slope for fifteen. Yeah yes i can't believe we never ran into. We moved here two years ago. Yeah yeah yeah. Oh wow okay. Because i've been living in dumbo now a year but yes yes but park slope is forever my favorite neighborhood and for anybody listening. Who's never been to park slope in brooklyn like it's like a neighborhood for new york. Yes it's my favorite one hundred percent. I love it so much. I'm just going to turn off the ac just in case you can hear it. You have the ac on this a win. I'm gonna get hot with this wing on these rights out of sirte sweaty so wait. How many whigs do you have. Twelve ten twelve. Maybe he yes. Are they all on like d- do they have their own closet. Well that's very nice. If you think i have enough space for that. So they just like like ziplock bags at mountlake fluff him up. Like my goal is to get a house and have like a wig wall like. That's my dream. Oh i love that. I don't have any way. But i have lots of clipping lots and i to stuff in bags and they actually live in a suitcase in but we have varieties colors textures. So fellow podcasters. This is very exciting fun. You started black frazier in quarantine. I did yeah long has been out now. It came out to a half months ago yet two months ago. Yeah and what prompted you to start by frazier kind of always had this idea of advice. Podcast floating around in my head and then like before quarantine like everyone's like bopping around traveling bobby boss. So i was like oh. Let's just never the right time for it. And then we're all sorta stuck inside. It was sort of like. Oh we're all kind of feeling all these heavy things right now with like social uprising. You know this pandemic like mass and employment. All these things. And i was like i really just feel like we all need to be having conversations with each other and sort of helping us feel better more hopeful about the world and you know my boyfriend always joke. That i'd like to just give vice unsolicited or solicited. And never sever seen frazier by know that he gives advice. And we're like. Oh mike a black frazier. And that's like how the name came about which has been like so cute and fun and i think people really responded to the fact that like this podcast is not designed to be like we have all the answers and you guys are going to learn more like this is a conversation. We don't always know how things are going to turn out but like at least as if we're connecting with each other we will feel less alone. I appreciate that. Because i think that in order to connect everyone. Everybody has to tell what their truth is. And that's exactly what you say like you say that this is where you can show your truth and do you feel like your guests are also able to like open up to you. Yeah i think so. I think we try to have like each episode. Have a theme so like for example. The episode i deal with abby jacobson. It was about motherhood. Because i don't wanna have kids and she's sort of like she's like i don't know but we're both you know. I think we're both thirty six so sort of like me. Get that age really to decide. Like what do you want your next sort of twenty years to look like in a real intentional way and so it was really good to just kind of have as frank open honest conversation and just sort of be like the fact that we're thinking about these things in sort of figuring out our lives like that is like the goal is not to be like. I'm better than you. I wanna have kids or like your life doesn't have meaning because you don't want to have kids is just sort of like you have to figure out what it's going to be best for your life and oftentimes that looks like something different from other people and that's okay you know so. You walked into that interview knowing you didn't want to have kids. I was just going to ask. Is that something you've learned about yourself. Or what have you learned about yourself. In hosting black frazier. I think when i was in my twenties i wanted to have kids and then as i got older i was just like. I really like being an aunt and i really like. Yeah i really like leaving. Also i feel like through my work and i tend to hire a lot of women i feel. I don't wanna call myself a mentor. But i feel like. I'm very nurturing that way and i feel like maybe that is my purpose rather than being a mom. It's sort of like kind of like nurturing. This when these women to find their own power become like these bad attitudes and women unlike okay. That's my purpose. i'm gonna lean into that. But i think what i learned about myself. I would always joke my boyfriend like oh. I'm not smart enough to the this person. Hey i'm really nervous to talk to this person because the you know they have a phd. And i don't and blah blah blah and now just sort of kind of a place where i'm like. I'm a person your person who cares about degrees. Who cares about how many books she read like. We gotta talk about some real life shit and like so much of that is based on experience and based on how you process the things that happened to you the things that you do to other people so mamy really sort of stop kind of nagy myself before interview someone or feeling like i have so much anxiety the whole time to be like. Oh my guy. You're going to say something stupid. Just sort of like even if i did who who cares.

"It's a really long time to be like I. I. Get this Standup College gig otherwise I can't pay my rent this month and I'm fucked. Like don't let this happen again where you're living in a shitty apartment that has a mouse problem like it was all these things where I was like my quality of life was like. So crappy like my first apartment where were the where had to go to housing court at a giant like mold problem in my bathroom at one point the ceiling actually collapse into my bathtub. Like was just all these things where it was like I should not be living like this and you know like, yes, do we stand up doesn't pay? Yes. Like being admin assistant doesn't pay but I had to also reach a point where I took responsibility for my part in the debt and I think that's the hardest thing is because. Society wants everyone to feel guilty and shame for not having money on my. All we society should just want to educate us. Yes. So that way we don't have those feelings and then we can be able to live within our means and I think that was the biggest thing. I learned was like live in your means like this apartment that I bought we live in Bibi and I've been living here for two years I could have afforded apartment. That were my mortgage would have been maybe twice as what I'm paying. But on my if I just pay half of that, you don't have. It's fine. My lowest point was living with moving in with a crackhead. Because He. I live with and the two of US lived in Shithole, that became a crack crackdown. I was not doing crack by would sit there eating my fruit loops in the morning with people. Me, I'll be in the kitchen with people next to me. The cooker heating up crack. So that was my existence like this guy used to get high a move all of my furniture from the house onto a roof, and he would also if the toilet was occupied, he would pass out of the window and we lived on the second floor of a pedestrian street. Fully. Illegal and looks like something out of those documentaries about holders. That we left I can't believe they didn't just incinerate it. Never mind. They have just. that. Shaped to the ground. So. Yeah. That was a that was for me. One of the kind of low points of realizing. Okay I need to I need to get out of here and away from this month for he pisses on me at some point. Yeah. I also just want to stress to anyone out there listening that one of the things I most want to think about when you are when you have excess funds, the thing the decision I made when I was and it was the best decision I ever made was any money I had that I'd saved I made sure to put first into my mental health. That is something no one ever encourage you to do the outsides never gonNA fix the inside. The smartest thing I ever did was make the Clare Decision that I am a hundred percent going to save up enough therapy that then ended up fulfilling the whole that I was trying to fill with shoes and bags and dresses. It definitely not say that it's always a sign that something's missing in your life I've sometimes, we won't not great Halterneck, but I definitely think some of the best advice if you have any extra money leftover during this wild moment in time, put that to woods all the therapy that you will probably need after twenty.

"So did you have that experience? Yeah. I mean, I think of all my group of friends maybe there was like one or two who didn't have student loan debt who wasn't like dealer credit cards or wasn't like sort of just living off of credit cards and so you know I. Look at my bank statements with I would constantly get overdraft fees and like added to housing core. How always I- housing court was. Twenty four because I was like. Three months behind rent like it was just things that were truly so ignorant and like insane and like of course, I wasn't going to tell my family this was going on. So I was really sort of. Trying to figure out like, okay. If I if I pay like half my rent, then I have my where I can make sure my electricity is not cut off and then I can buy enough groceries that'll last me it was all this stuff where I was just constantly like bouncing around just like sort of like massively in debt no one knew and it wasn't like I was going on trips or anything but I was deaf I, definitely seem like I have my shit together. I just totally didn't and I think it's one of those things where like. Not only are you are conditioned to have debt but I think this sense of. You're not like your identity, but the way that you express yourself when he's here, quotes is through. Consumerism it's. Sort of mature materialistic and I remember when I fast forward to like, I don't know my third thirty two when I paid off all my student loans and I remember we'd be getting interviewed about stuff like from then to now and people be like what with your I like your biggest paycheck like what did you spend it on like what was your biggest splurge and my paying off my student loans and I could tell people would be sort of like. Disappointed like it's not like a fund juicy answers not like. Myself a good she bagger. Oh, I like went on this trip to Palm Springs. It was literally like I had to get myself out of debt and. Start back at zero at thirty two and hope that I could get on track again we. We do kind of have this opinion throughout society that looking after your finances makes you boring. It's the smartest most fun thing to do because you know what isn't fun is being terrified of debt all the time I spent decade just panicking about money and it definitely impacted my mental health and also especially, and I want to talk to you about this but especially when you lie to your family about it. And you lie to your friends about it because you carry the deep shame of. Not being able to keep your head above water. It makes you feel so isolated, I just didn't know and be I worked. So hard. I'm such a Taipei person I just feel like well, if I work this hard, then she'd be able to play this hard and then I had to really sort of like understand like you know what's actually cool is like. Not, being like, okay I'm going to charge going on this trip and then spending seven months paying off a trip. Like that makes no sense like what's cooler like not going on the trip and then being able to just like enjoy your life and like go out to dinner maybe once a week or like not have to hide.

"AM starting to podcast called black frazier. what is that? I've never seen the show, but I saw the still shots on Mike. Okay Kelsey grammer wearing a lot of beige suits and he's giving out of ice on Mike I can do that and we're Mike Vinnie beauty lipstick instead. But you know like a lot of my friends say that I tend to give advice whether solicited or unsolicited, and I think just because of the time ever in right now I'm doing these is she lives I was doing with certain people felt people were naturally like asking questions anyway. So I thought this'll be the perfect time sort of kind of birth this baby of an idea that had in my head for a while. So each episode you sit down with like a different CELEB- year included I. To listen to our episode and it's all based on one theme. So like Whitney Cummings it is. Money you know..

"For today's episode Avocados 'cause I have a friend of real life friend on the show name is phoebe Robinson. A you might know her from to Queens or other POLKA. So many white guys. How Nukus that is just coming out go black frazier She's also the author of you can't touch my hair and everything is trash, but it's OK, which is truly one of the funniest books ever read and she's just one of the most relatable and interesting voices on the Internet and in stand up, she's also a great actress she's infuriatingly talented uncharismatic an interesting coup and I I'm thrilled to know her we fell in love over instagram and I I got to talk to her today. So frankly about so many important things to her things like race an experience of being a black woman in America today, the performance of activism of friends around her and how that feels, and also we spoke about money, which is something that so few people talk about nowadays especially women and yet women are the ones who most need to talk about money considering that we are eighty percent of the people who are targeted to buy to consume, and so it feels fucking ridiculous that that is not one of the first conversations that we start having a households and at schools. How will we still talk to budget at understand credit understand mortgages, how to understand taxes? It's almost as if it's deliberate, I'm not saying is I'm just saying that it's very very suspicious and so we talked all about money and the shame of not being able to handle your money how to build your way out of debt and she and I. Both Got History of being absolutely share it with all cash because we were both not. With the vital information of how to protect ourselves. Our Wall money is the root of a lot of evil money is currently as things stand the road to independence and freedom for many of us especially women especially women of color. So I. think that was a compensation that I was dying to help someone on this podcast and it's not the last time that will talk about it. But I really think you'll enjoy this and she just removes all of the stigma and shame from of the things around money I think we need to talk about. So please join me and loving the phenomenon and funny and wonderful affect smells rating. Good Phoebe Roca..

He's one of the characters in a bug's life and he's so fuck rich good. I forget I'M GONNA look it up. He's so good in a bug's life and my nieces I'm just like yes queen. Let's watch this again. I guess this point because we can't watch movie because Kevin Spacey Likes to now you say nothing heart warming tale yet. I'm sure sure. Yes I'm just GONNA go sit in the corner and shiver but you enjoy the move. It's a great I'm never seen any red flags In France making new friends as an adult I believe people should heed. Red Flags are time is valuable and I think people Some people are vultures and take a long time to figure out that if someone comes onto strong too fast that might be a red flag. Yeah if someone like puts you on social too fast oh that's a little. I'm always a little weirded out about that. I'm always like if you always like whenever you first meet someone you're always like. Let's get a pick. Just don't get the pick. The I don't know much feels a little bit like look I'm hanging out with this person as opposed to just like you enjoy hanging. I'm actually hanging out with or how can you take a picture of me can. Yeah just met. I don't know your good work for you if someone tries to make you the personal photographer twos. There's you know not all establish the dynamic. It's a red flag if you can't be silent around someone so with Benton. I never felt like I had to perform around ten like we could just like sit in silence wants I love seeing. This is so great so hard though. If you're around someone you find yourself being like what are you reading. Liquidity doing like yacht means. Something about them is making. You feel like you're not enough for you need to entertain them or perform. I'm kind of a point where I can't be friends with people I feel like I have to entertain them or take care of them in any way. Yeah I think it's great so that's something we out so that's a big big one. I think a lot of people don't know that if you hang out with them for a couple hours and feel exhausted. Oh my God there might be something else. Go idea. Friendships is not to deplete you. It's to energize. You took me longtime learn that amen sister. You're like no no. You're such a gas to hang around. I Lo- I wish we lived in the same city. But I don't know I I think the same way EAPPEN how Long distance relationships I think are really healthy. I think when you start out in different cities you're forced to actually get to know each other and not overdose on each other and let all your neuro chemicals of my passion and less than sex can. Sometimes I don't even like you were so we we just you know Proximity is kind of why we're dating. I think that it really weeds out. That relationships have convenience but I think it's good for friendships to like when you're in town. We really were card to see each other. It's cute yeah it's really cute. Love it and I do feel like it. It's taken me a long time with people that are in the same businesses me to not feel like like I have to talk about work when I'm around them. You know that's a that's a struggle. I think sometimes yeah I guess we have to talk about all the work thing executives. You could just be fucking silly. Yeah Yeah and not talk about work all the time. I feel much pressure right now as like women and business to be like. Let's give each other the life hacks conquer this business like sometimes the best thing you can do is to just just like have authentic silly time in recharge you don't always have to be like hustling and plotting and planning and I just always feel like I want to compare notes and endless share. What I've learned you know? Yeah sometimes I mean a new friend and I'm like okay. This is the seminar. We're forming a company. You don't it always have to form a company. So what are we collaborating on. You know so. It's like always finding that balance. I I really struggle with that and then I'm kind of like every work friends real friends I put did that to myself because I felt like I only have you know. Yeah just I feel like you're more relaxed now. Now that we're on camera. I feel really relaxed to do now. The millions of people are listening. I feel super duty as soon as we walk off. maccabee actor Okay I'm seeing tomorrow. This is her. She doesn't post as much as I do. Because self respect and self esteem. Yeah but I will post her my feet. How about that so she does not have posted a love? You and maybe don't read elephants of us. I also have another book to keep your Clo- yeah there's that too fine. So many books books Tina Fey more books than Tina Fey. Books and Winnie's. Oh Wow you don't work for me. It'd be fire higher but I mean that's a choice fired. I have nothing else to say to another book. I want her number two. You don't want to do another the fucking book and I wrote the Foreword Right. The all of it you the back all of it. I can't I'm not Kano. You're so young you've got that time you seem very different from that came out. I would like to ask Fan. I would like to have a report writing. The Book Changed Me Writing The book. All of the things so funny when people come up to me and they're like Oh my God I'm going through this codependence and I have to say I'm like Oh well I'm through it like it's so that's your next book. I'm not talking to me like I'm beat it. No but I think that writing out in which is why as already said when you wrote this stuff like you're sort of mini four step in here when you right all of this stuff about yourself. It's so healing in the book. Healed so many parts of me and I'm like Oh shit. I'm not as broken as I used to be my even interesting anymore so everyone should write about yourself. That's part of why twelve step programs works so well because you're writing about all this stuff in healing all these invisible wounds but yeah I kind of like I need to go make a bunch more mistakes before I they would like to know about the good parts of your people have to remember fax. WHOA that kind of blew my mind and I almost blew past it? I never think that that is true. I never think ah that something going well as entertaining for people if you do it in a way that's not bragging you find those moments of still like I'm revealing really my flaws not just like I'm fucking nailing it syndication money like a gun right whales rails or rails all then as many good things as go on. You're still actively going through your steps and your ass things always growing your books have some of the best cover art correct. It's amazing like you see on a shell. From a mile docker Otros Mindy Tucker took both pictures. She's fantastic Delina Madden does my makeup makeup and I first WIG first. Book First. Wig is away. Both whigs are Nevada right. I think anyway okay. They update their instagram. Yes okay good there you go. The second cover looks so much like my cousin looked just like her weight. You have a black cousin. The cousins are black. My Mom's side my my aunts makes guy so okay I was like. Where's the connector? Here I was like well that that'd be like yeah. You know my scissor Filipino. Brought to your Mama Cat. How how but I did see? You'll be like should i. Goes how is she. I mean a man of the phone down. Yeah that's how we got our recalling the download the cash out for free the on the APP store or Google play. Google play market ten dollars for you ten dollars for the project. Oh my gosh. That's man that's what we do here. Don't ride elephants You know where to find us. I'm not saying all this shit. You know where you know what to do. You're adults. That's great great. Sign on yeah. I'm not doing this for you. It can find it. That's I can't help you.

"It was like I was cold coating my so everyone everyone is doing a little bit of. ASM are on the show. I think that's yours. That's my favorite one you to Jessica all the time in the studio and recorded not up Queens. I just play. That's my favorite. And she would hate it so much. I think the problem is I hate how much I like it. Yeah I think it's more that you know what I mean. That one is oddly. Sexual all right. I didn't feel about what I What else would that sound like old man eating soup? Oh you guys are terrorizing rising me. It's enough as I like that one. Do you watch them. No I know I know they exist. I appreciate the culture. It's a big thing that ESU thing. I'm trying to get one. I like the The scratching. I just like it when people listener people whispering one girl I was watching and I found myself falling in love with her. And I don't know why whisperings the worst thing you can do for your vocal chords right. I think that's true. I actually think that's I think whatever I do in my stand up it's the worst thing this pills for now. Taunting her something. I'M GONNA call myself out on. Is That I. Why sometimes try to boss people around by pretending to be helpful? I do that too. I'm bossy it's fine but it's yeah I bet you as someone who's now in charge of the people do you find yourself worrying about other people's feelings and how do you tell me how to do something with grace and elegance. Yeah submarine is I I. I Love self-help. Some Rina's book called radical candor Yeah it's a great book is all about like being a Boston workplace and like you know just getting your mind right and making sure career employees as well and like realizing you know like the first thing I realized once I started becoming a boss. Was that like you actually work for your employees just as much as they work for. You WanNa make sure they feel appreciated and your nutri mirror drains right and you know. I think a lot of times when people don't tell Benton up to you. I think a lot of times people get into our positions. They sort of lie to themselves. That Lake people are dying to work for you. But it's like you're paying. That's why they're here. That's correct like a man is a great assistant she's here hi Don I e Oh. You're not a volunteer uh-huh oh you don't just want to be here because you care it's not just your dream to watch her dreams. Come live audio. Well you know I asked her like order. My Sweet Green Salad doesn't want to do that right. She doesn't want to order my guacamole. Greens are paying her. That's right and so I think you have to understand that lake. You're not this. Treat to be around twenty four seven. Yes you know what I mean just realize you are also a person with your own flaws in your own ups and down I oh I think it allows you to sort of put yourself in the in. I used to be an assistant so I think you can put yourself in a position of your assistant or whoever your employees Louis is what their position is. I understand what they're going through in order to work for you. I'm glad you're saying this as I'm thinking about it as sometimes when I've ask for something like that and have felt weird like God. I feel like I'm Boston. Someone around I'm her and then I'll go like well. I had to do this or when someone you know when I'm to direct with someone or not communicate of enough with someone or not clear enough with someone I'm like well. No one was clear with me. I had to figure it out and I'd eat shit and then I'm like that doesn't mean should perpetuate this cycle. I came up under under. The idea is to be better than the bosses. I've had. Yes because sometimes rationalized my own behavior. Rubbing Liguori was fucking Shitty to me and I had to take a bunch of abuse. But that's not. Yeah yeah of course correct. Yeah of course and it's also like Like anything the more. It's actually I find because I remember this. Journalists was like following me around for something secure so nice to everybody and I was. I thought it was so sort of weird comment. What's going on out there? Number one number two actually being nice to people whatever that means is kind of selfish. It's like well everyone's better at their job. Yeah if they feel respected. It's also I don't like go to work every day and go. I'm going to respect everyone because that's completely against my instinct. You know what I mean but but it's also like you get better work out of everyone. Yeah they mean to people. You're actually just hurting yourself. Hey now and I think people don't understand like what I think. A LOT OF PEOPLE WANNA only be a boss. I get to tell everyone what to do. It's not what a bosses. Yeah you like. It's truly worrying about overhead. It's truly being leg checking in with each employee making sure they're feeling like you. I do feel like you're kind of like a parent in some way off and like these are like your kids and you're really just like I wanna make sure everyone's happy and good good and feeling good all the time and it's really. It's it's a little more exhausted. I thought I was going to be but I do enjoy it. I mean I think that a lot of people think if you know Being a boss means I have to boss everybody around telling them what to do all the time. If you get off on that I can't help you know you know gets your journey And but I think the the best bosses hire the best people and then leave them alone and let them do the. If you're telling someone what to do constantly all the time you've made a hiring mistake. Yes it's a it's a mismatch. Yeah and it's also so many people have so many different skills and talents off. You just get the fuck out of the way that's right and let them flourish and shine. They'll surprise is you in themselves and they can learn skills about themselves. That's right they can really do all these amazing things so it was like. Don't hinder someone so you can be like. My name is on the check check. No one cares. I also think it's really important that I thought being the boss Matt I have to know all the answers all the time. It's great it's actually the opposite. Yeah what do you you think. Yeah what do you think should happen. And then you hear else's idea and then your job is ultimately you have to make the decision. Yeah in be decisive but I realize like sometimes the boss is the person in the room talking the least yes took me so long to understand that really. Yeah yes okay. Yes took a couple of weeks. What was the whole up on this because those are secure that I think for the first time I had okay? This is the thing that I made so I have to know everything and have answers for everybody. and IT'S I. I thought my job was to do everyone's job and they're all doing here. So when you have Whitney Were you Kinda like that on the show where you were just kind of like well. It's also like a lot of pressure when it's like your show is named after you your lane and I gotta be involved. You know I was also so young and I was so scared and I was so dismore fiqh about what healthy working and looked blake. Because I didn't have mentors didn't have women to look up to. I never had sort of seen powerful women running things and my main priority back then was making sure everyone liked me and what I now know is if you want like you get them out at a reasonable time. Not You know what I mean so just be direct with them. I think most adult people don't want to beat around the bush in terms of feedback. They'd rather you just tell them what to do. So then they go home sooner. You Know I. I was so worried about hurting people's feelings for so long. No I mean I like this but I feel like you know what I like it. Yeah I do like which is like totally irresponsible. Communication totally fantasizing people that just kind of want to be told the truth booth assuming everyone was sensitive as I was or something you know and I think I also again. I thought that I had to make every decision. I didn't understand I and like oh I can delegate I can say well what do you think yeah and I can empower other people. I thought I was making their lives easier by doing their jobs and I wasn't. They were kind of just like confused and like what am I doing here. Yeah but it is. It is tough being a dream killer if you'd be like Oh no you can't do this or idea or a working on my talk show and there's something wrong I was. I was like Oh actually. Don't like any of these questions and I said until the show right incident to the right as I don't like these questions Let's do some more. And if folk kinda mean to be like. Oh I'm not loving these questions but it's also like we're only going to get to the good stuff you know. No one's kneeling it. All the time I it's you we we really joke yet to revise a bunch. So it's it's fine it's hand everyone's fine yep everyone can is an adult you know but I also think I put a lot of pressure on myself because in the beginning of any business any endeavor that you're doing any website you're starting you have to really make the target clear to be so if you are saying no. To people about things creatively creatively in the beginning. You have to tell them why you're saying no you know so that they can get better at their job. I think that's the biggest mistake I see a lot of people making by experience someone just like no and then you're like I don't know I don't even know what I'm pitching. I don't even know what the target is. You know you say in Benton I've probably been overly Liquicia in this area where I'm like. No and here's why do you think your boss and I feel like I was sometimes like overly and I never wanNA feel like. I'm micromanaging but to say like these questions on work for me because I just want to get to the root of it so then they go. Oh Great. That won't ever happen again. Most people just want to be good at their jobs. Most people feel pride you know and I think for me. I'm always trying to figure out. How can I have someone in this environment? Feel pride died when they leave every day. You know. Yeah that's great. That's I mean thinking that weighs like are you know you're good boss Joe. That was my idea. Whatever you know? And and And I I I think it's just the way you say it. I think it's just sort of like you can say no in a way that's graceful. I've started And I'm always always about sharing like tools that help how people just like you know I've been thinking about it in this doesn't work for me and here's why saying I've been thinking about. It just helps people know that you've been thoughtful about something and then you're not just like Willy Nilly like in the moment like nagging something. Yeah Yeah I've been thinking about you know have given us some top. That's how manipulative. No this House that's good. Yeah that's solid but just and here's why I think.

"Are you make your my best when I'm just like hey you stuttered people like she's a bit also so we don't have like Nice soft voices and that's a good point. Our voices come off like they just sound my whole life but they just sound like bad. I mean what we say we look great today. You do sometimes come bitchy. I always just assume I'm being sensitive. I've been told that my home. I don't think you're trying to be Veggie and this is why we've had concentrated talk just my personality. That's what it sound like. I'm GonNa tell you. There are times though. I also think it's it's funny like you'll just be like I'll say something and you'll be okay. Okay see that would that has hurt my feelings before well because I'm not gonNA argue with you. You're enjoying but I don't think you're trying trying to be mean no high sound my voice in it stuck in perpetual puberty. It's not deep. It's not how it's what sounds like. My thing is if I'm going to be bitchy didn't you so you'll know. Yeah that's yeah then you think. Yeah because you wouldn't like I have all I was so impressed when you do the meet-and-greet after your show you were so involved with the people that were talking to you know that there's a skill like to be like the man I will not. I'm at a point in my life where I will not fake anything thing and I say anything I will not take anything at this point in my life and if someone comes to my show but to me just listening to someone making eye contact with them. I'm not like That is like so much weird. My Phillip I people write me Nice messages now and I'll be like thank you and sound an i. Just I made the mistake of saying out loud but I feel like I sound bitchy and so now they are. They'll be like they'll be like. Oh you're doing that thing where US three you say. Thank you like a bitch and I'm like that's what it's hard to think. Thank you without being seeming seeming patronizing Django. What do you might need a new word because I say thank you so much? That's what I do me too. I just now have to go. I really appreciate it. Thank you is over. Thank his out. You can't say it going. No don't do that. I think I love your show that looks like a tech. We already have too many going against us at this point but I do think that thank you has now oh hit peak sardonic you know. It's like the words genius. Have Larry those who lost their value. I think they should. We say I appreciate that. I much appreciate you coming. How would you say that I appreciate that when someone says like great saddle? I appreciate that. That doesn't feel genuine to me. Well now saying it to try to prove how genuine it is now. It's coming off shitty good set. Read think about this. You don't say bad. Thank you thank you so much. It's hard thank you. It's hard to be grateful without some of the thinking you're an asshole it's all it's so weird. Think you if you say things as he thinks thanks thank you thanks. I said something the other your day. They came off so shitty. I was in this really big meeting and this girl had gotten a promotion and I didn't WanNa say good for you because I didn't want to sound patronizing Bravo. It sounded really weird. Top of the morning. She's literally hung no great Gert. Good job like it's sounds so I she looked at me. Weird you magic. I got my dream job. Bravo that's set. It was like Bravo. Great like what like. It was like a member and dirty dancing that I carry watermelon moment. I was just like back. Bravo says that like haunted me for the rest of the day. But then good for you. That sounds patronizing like never would've done it. That's what good for. You means shocked. Yeah yeah well you did it that I'm proud of. You never thought you could accomplish this. That's impressive I say that's really impressive. That's impressive happy. Happy for you. I didn't know her. I don't know her. I wish we could send it to people. I love yourself happy for you say nothing. Yeah that's awesome awesome just to cool. That's super cool. Intense eye. Contact nodding. Don't do that now. Wow when someone gets a promotion when you say I got got promoted. I knew it I knew you would. That's such a good one. That's when you tell people it's no surprise there. Yeah also it takes the holy coming to hear about it out of it you want to look good and they want to be a guy went to the meeting and I went to the store. Okay Hey you got it got it. That's funny I knew you would say no more. That's like say no more. That's a great way to stop someone from telling you the story but also being happy for them right. This is going on too long. I'm not editing this part we we need to talk about the fact that someone left comment telling us that Marilyn Monroe's ex-husband is buried face down on top of her grave. I started a fire with Marilyn Monroe Brandt so hugh hefner's buried next Monroe and now someone has written in and said that Cajon Dimaggio is buried above her so she's getting in like a the other ex husband Goblin throttle puncher. That's where it is. Oh Oh this makes so szucs Greenland pitcher. Oh that's the one she looks great in There's little that's so interesting because I got a ton of tweets today saying that name Richard Shirt Punch. Her and I didn't understand what was happening. I thought it was a new person like entered the Democratic race is leave me out of this show. I had no idea who was that makes them so. He brought the grave plot above her even though she married a bunch of men after him. What a desperate dead guy who buried face down on her his skull? Oh you mean. He's buried if laying on her looking at her wide. You guys dead guys are so gross so Marilyn L.. Monroe has her first husband on top of her facing down and Hugh hefner buried next to her. This woman is just being gang. Banged by these old. Ask goblins uh-huh every night. I'm telling you gotta dig her up. I stand by this. This is my room. This is my mission in life is to dig up. Marilyn Monroe's Rose Bounds will adopt them. You have a yard all area them. I can set up a locker. We can have in the pod studio like we can even put her bones back together. Maybe I yeah I can do that. Promptly Eckermann Michael Glue and we can put her back together But I refused used to allow Maryland. What can we do to kick start are going to get her bones? Can you Producers meaning to kickstarter who owns someone's bones. Their family is that true so her but they're dead so her she didn't have any kids who owns Marilyn Monroe's bones. We probably would Hollywood for sure. It's definitely Oh okay. Yeah I did just at the table. Okay I'm GonNa work on that. We need to get me Mitts like you know how people insane asylum little all right so someone right in. Tell us who owns Marilyn Monroe's bowes I'm interested in purchasing them. We are going to raise money to buy Some people have fancy cars fancy jewelry. Not this guy I would like to figure out a way to acquire Marilyn Monroe's bones help us out will send you a collarbone. Because then you can't like album. This is dirt people WANNA go. Oh but I would imagine. Oh it's called my producers saying it's called a mausoleum but are they doing it so the people go dig her up. Maybe maybe they've been through this with people like me. Maybe not the first person to try to dig her out. Go like in watch movies at graveyard like with them I don't know that is you're in a weird red at some read it. I don't want to know anything about but okay so more to come on the bones I'm not sure how this became my brand My main what do you call it like my. What's the thing when you have your thing your your? This is your hill to die on. Because they help. I'm GONNA die on. That's exactly right phoebe Robinson's here. She's an author. She has million podcast so many white guys to Queens movies TV shooting her TV. TV show tomorrow actually. phoebe Robinson. She's here she's a treat. She's so funny and so smart and I'm actually excited about this interview because I know her really well all but we haven't known each other that long so I actually am am not nervous but also have a lot of really good questions a lot of really good questions. We've been talking about everything that's trash trash. Someone just cut us off y'all cart so I feel like we're very close strangers like I think there's this thing though when there's someone that you've known for a while or you watch their work you've really close to them and we met in kind of a weird way like you posted something on instagram. And I was just like facetime. Yeah I forced this regime no it was so great and I feel like we will not see each other for months and then we always catch up on your Tesla for about four hours. Yeah you know. We're always at your test that just being like this. Is the mother the funding we get to it though. I think that to me is the most valuable kind of friendship where you cannot connect with somebody for two months but when you see each other you go hard there yeah formalities. I mean. Remember last time when we're at the Beverly Wilshire 'cause I stayed because I'm a boozy bitch and you earn the there. Are All these ridiculously looking gene. Like old white guys like very orange skinned as it was fucking wild. I'm like why am I staying year. Stay at a Holiday Inn. It's be much less creepy. It was fucking. Yeah but no. We did sit in the car once and talk for four hours. Yes it was like. Are we going to make out was about happen. Ooh Valley's come up and they're like you guys gonNA over. He's got more to cover to cover like fifteen years of us both being in this business. Yeah yeah in like four hours. Oh my gosh. There's a lot I don't know about you and we do a little quiz on this. Show your favorite animal your favorite article of clothing clothing and your favorite body of water. People listening to the show are telling me not to help. The guest Benton gave me the feedback loud and clear and all the comments your favorite animal. Aw Not like the one that you have or have had like the one you admire the most just to give you an idea I ping honey badger yet. Don't really speak Jacob animals kind of over so this really don't and that she's wearing for those of you that are gonNA see on Youtube. She's wearing a Cheetah shirt that I actually have almost two years ago. Oh homage you whatever you want. Time's up on people telling you say we. It really is bringing me a lot of joy I mean I wanNA look. Maybe one of the nicer things anyone's ever done for me war. She's that I I. I don't look at anyone else's style but my own shadow terrail great buttoned-down I love sponsoring no because I only wear rails shorts. I mean Justin beaver bold where rails I swear to God will send me Spanos. It'd be like where's this shirt. Is it the dry cleaner or not. If I can't find one of my rails I have a Pan Am so you have four more so I have I buy duplicates. 'cause I'm so afraid I something fits and works. I buy two or three of them and then I can't find I panic screaming. We're by the way doesn't work for me. Anyway is not my decision anymore. So it's just like this weird friendship on my shirt. I don't live if there. I'm sorry you don't think of animals that much but one that you admire takes your breath away Oh you know when I was in Africa that sounded really know. You know when I was on as a fiery with some white people as you you. Yeah I was in Zambia and we saw just baby elephants just crossing the road and it was the cutest little thing that'd be following their mom around so I thought that was really case..

"People think look Orange Texas Cherub. They said that they wanted less editing. Because they wanted to be more you and I wanted so bad to be like That's her that's pretty much what she's like. I'm GonNa give you the best version of this. I think as the show goes on and I get tighter this and more comfortable and just more concise. There will be less editing so in the people just listening you probably in the Youtube clips. There are times if something is like too boring I feel like or just like a tangent or this. This is really what I've been editing. When its flares up when you're one of my girls flares onto girds let's girds it's backward from the mind because my athlete and it growls and you're always like you amount of sounds you make with your mouth and you also banging on the table?
