"An ABC podcast today, doctor Paul Johnson is a Professor of medicine at the university of Melbourne, among other roles. But back in 1993, he was a young physician, working at the Fairfield infectious diseases hospital in inner Melbourne. And it was a personal connection that would set off everything that came next. Our family had just bought a holiday House in east cows in a region called silver leaves. And that's because, unfortunately, my dad died relatively young and he's leftovers sabbatical. My mom and my wife and myself got together and we bought this house as a memorial almost to him because he used to love going down there, but he only ever had the chance to rent. We weren't that well often we were kids. Cows is the main township on Philip island. A beach holiday spot two hours drive southeast of Melbourne. The island's usual claim to fame is the local population of little penguins. But this was a different story. All of a sudden, I was seeing people at the Fairfield infectious diseases hospital in the central Melbourne. Who seemed to have these rather horrible ulcers and their street addresses were quite similar or in the same area as we just bought this house. A handful of patients was presenting to the hospital with these severe skin lesions that refused to heal. These often appeared as a bull's eye wound, quite deep, red, and pustules at the center with weakens surrounding skin. Paul started to investigate these cases, more closely. I put a little group together and we started having a look around. And we found that there are clustering around the golf course, so all of the people who had cases, if you draw them on a map, they all seem to cluster around the golf course and that swampy area near the golf course. Whereas, on the other side of cows, which otherwise was similar, there was no cases at all. So it was extremely local. At the time, Paul had been searching around for a research project to sink his teeth into. And here it was. Mysterious ulcers, popping up in this one sleepy beach town. And as he soon finds out, this mysterious disease, it does have a name. Actually, it has a few. So it used to be called bean style also in Victoria. And it's been called daintree ulcer in mosman ulcer and far north Queensland. It's been called sick belong a cpac and New Guinea and the name beru also actually comes from East Africa. But the reason there are so many local names is because people realize this very local characteristic that you get it in certain places. And it's this last one that the World Health Organization would decide on as the diseases official name. Paul was going to investigate beru ulcer. And he wasn't going to do it alone. I'm Elizabeth cool ass, welcome to science friction. Are we seeing infinitesimally Mitchell for a couple more weeks? And today on the show, how a sideline research project would turn into a 25 year collaboration to figure out how brulee also functions and how it spreads. It's like a really interesting, almost murder investigation. And this Odyssey, it's really a parable for how science works. And often finding something isn't the way you thought it was, it's much more helpful. But now after a quarter century, two Melbourne scientists are getting very close to some answers. Okay, Paul, before we get into the mysteries of what we don't know, let's get into what we do know. Would you describe what it is we know about the bory ulcer and how it functions. So it's basically an environmentally acquired infection of the skin. Basically something happens to you when you go into an environment where the bacteria is and for many years it's been a mystery where it is in the environment and how you get it when you're there. And really interestingly, it seems to only take an afternoon or an hour even in what we call an endemic area to become at risk of acquiring it. And if you do acquire the infection, it can often be very hard to tell. It's got a very long incubation period. So it may be many months before you notice anything. And typically you notice a small growing thing that we call a lesion and it keeps growing. And it doesn't usually hurt too much. But it just relentlessly progresses. Over the years, doctors like Paul have pieced together the movements of people visiting endemic areas for short stretches of time. Things like going to Philip island for a day trip. And they figured out that there's usually a four or 5 month lag between assumed exposure to the bacteria, and the first presentation of an ulcer. In some cases, that can take 9 or ten months. So you've got no idea it's there, and it gives the infection heaps of time to grow. And now, if left, it can become very destructive slowly. It kind of spreads quite widely in the fat layer between the skin and the lining over the top of the muscles and the bone. So in that space between skin and the deeper structures. And also that you eventually see on the surface, which may not be there initially, is really like the middle of a donut, so you see a hole in your skin appearing, but the problem is already quite a lot bigger and gone well beyond what you can see. So what's on the surface is a kind of tip of the iceberg. It can be typically in the disease family trait, baruch also is closely related to leprosy and tuberculosis. Cases were usually found in tropical, rural areas of West African countries. Places like Ghana, Côte d’Ivoire, Benin. Left untreated, the legions can grow so be that people are left with terrible scarring or can lose the function of a limb. So when the disease presents in Victoria, it's something of a fantastic paradox as Paul puts it. Meanwhile, here we are in Victoria. We've now got one of the highest rates in the world. And we are seeing it in fully developed country in urban and suburban settings. And yet people are turning up in the winter to their doctors with a tropical disease occurring in a temperate part of the world. So that's the paradox. The reason it turns up in the winter is because of this long incubation period and people do get infected in the summer. But the fact that we've got a tropical rural disease in a temperate first world city is really interesting. In Australia, the first recorded case of beru ulcer occurred in the 1940s in bendale, a small town about 300 kilometers east of Melbourne. Not long after that, a group of Australian scientists, including sir Peter McCallum. They identify the bacterium that causes the disease. Mycobacterium ulcer or M also runs for short. They have also been small case clusters around the daintree river in far north Queensland, and some near rockhampton. But for decades, they were just a few cases each year. Then, across three years in the early 90s, 29 cases emerged around that one golf course in Phillip island. This had been an infectious disease, rare enough and dispersed enough, but no one had paid too much attention, except for a small number of dedicated researchers..

That's gonna help us soak up any moisture that might start coming out. We don't want to use that, you don't want blood on your feathers. Okay, that's your warning right there. There is just a little bit of flesh and bone, feathers and skin in this edition of science friction. It's Natasha Mitchell, wielding a scalpel, yes. But I promise you there will be no ooze. People think that we actually got some blood and stuff everywhere, but what you're going to realize is it's not. It's can be quite clean. So I'm putting on my apron and getting pretty psyched. 'cause I'm gonna do some taxidermy. Really? So it's not just texting them used to be called stuffing. So back in the day, usually methods back then, but back when it was cold, stuffing was literally that took the skin off something. So that skin up and then stuffed it and it could have been stuffed with local straw, wood fiber, anything really. My name's Jane Smith. Now you're one of Australia's top taxidermists, yes? I'm not sure about that, but I've been working at male museum for 35 years as a traditional museum, taxidermist. When I started at the museum, I did work experience. And always had a love of natural history, but never thought I'd fall in the line of taxidermy, but the head preparator there had been a 40 years. Wow. He wanted someone to mentor and I just happened to be at the right time. Do you remember your first taxidermy specimen? Yeah, yeah, and it still was on display, not long ago and she has brought Braxton emotions, really. It's a qual, which is quite a very specimen for species in Victoria. But museum taxidermists like dean are almost as scarce these days too. We're quite rare. We're not commercial taxidermists doing the game, not deer and foxes and things like that. So we're really specialized in understanding the anatomy and so forth of all our native wildlife and can do some pretty darn good taxidermy. And I'm here to learn some of that art will try to. This was the first main interview I was allowed to record outside of my home since the pandemic and Melbourne lockdowns began in March 2020. So I really felt like breaking out and getting totally visceral and how to feel really alive having a counter with the dead. So on our own summer I am taking us into a kind of fantasy office in central Victoria today to made a duo called the museum makers. We're in a place called lock 19, which is a wonderful art precinct at the back of kessel main Victoria. I've got a workshop here that I'll share with dean. And we make things. Do they ever? But calling them merely things is an understatement. It can range from Tony insects to huge blue whales, so they might be skeletons are going to research collection, or they might be models of things that might be extinct animals, fossil replicas. We do all sorts of things like cultural things. So it might make replicas of Aboriginal artifacts. Just over your left shoulder, I see a taxidermied crow to our right. Well, we're staring down upon us as a dinosaur model over there is a kangaroo boxing kangaroo cast. I think some carcasses of bets, some foxes, a crocodile, peering overhead. Most of the taxi day we all have taxidermy is for institutions like schools or universities or museums. And it was at the Melbourne museum where you and Dane first met as kids starting out as traine museum preparators. Every surface in this large tin shed they now call their office is adorned with a menagerie of natural history alliance at books, sketches, the hand built models and taxidermied specimens they make of marsupials, snakes, spiders, birds, plants, and a whole lot more. Oh, the drawer of eyes. Look at that. Always of all different colors and sizes. Yeah, that'd be crocodile eye. I don't know what that was off. That's a yeah. Dinosaur? Well, I reckon it must be a dinosaur who sort of. Oh, look at that fish. In Europe, a lot of these are blind glass. They're not cheap for eyes, you know, get eyes made. And then we have other ones which we call a blanket. It's got the black pupil, and then we'll pint all the fine detail in behind the glass. So you see it from the front. I find this place totally beguiling alongside the taxidermy specimens. The artificial models they make of flora and fauna begin small out of all sorts of materials just look so real. And that's the point. So that's a cast of a koala body. While you did fall out of the coil of conservation in Phillip island, but I wanted it so every now and then it had blink and its head would turn. Someone would go did that just and then they'd go you know they talked to the person this is going. No, actually not. So here we have. And if you thought you did a pretty good job of perfecting a sourdough or surviving endless Zoom meetings this past year, these two had the coolest project during Victoria's COVID lockdowns. We were fortunate enough to be in regional Victoria where we did have some restrictions, but we could still work with a team of 5 people and we built a 60 meter dinosaur. And it had to travel to WH for the new museum that opened. What sort of dinosaur titanosaurus massive sauropods to four legged brontosaurus type thing a long neck long tile. The herbivore. Creating an enormous authentic replica of a dinosaur that's long extinct is a big engineering fate and a scientific one. Near where they found some of the fossil remains of the dinosaur they found what they think to be the skin impressions. So the dinosaurs lied on the side of a muddy bank. It's caught up and it's left an impression. Look, your footprint, if you like of its skin. And I believe that to be the skin texture of that particular dinosaur. And we had to rest sculpt all that over the whole boost, 60 m² of skin. And there was built over 6 months. It took us three months to just sculpt the skin on. So while everyone else was making sourdough watching Netflix videos during lockdown, you were making a dinosaur. That's every kid's fantasy. Like I said to people, we weren't making a gecko. We wouldn't have been at a socially distanced case I was good that we had a 6 time meter to dinosaur project. Text you doing me is a really good basis for understanding anatomy, getting inside of animals, working closely with animals. We can apply that to building sculptures of prehistoric animals as well and getting that right. And with that dinosaur, it.

"It saban with that out of the way that means got one order of business left a race this weekend and this is going to be such a big such an unpredictable race. Fabio quattro edging away in the championship looking for that opportunity to just kick the door wide open and attractive. He's really not that fond of you've got more marquez. Who has been incredible here in the past looking to recreate some of the magic that we saw a couple of rounds of go back and saxon ring and then on top of all of that. Maverick van y'all is back on the affiliates. Let's talk about all of them. And what i think is gonna happen this weekend as we jump into our full preview of round thirteen of the twenty twenty one motogp championship the aragon gp at motor land aragon. And let's start by talking about this track. Aragon hasn't been around for a very long time but somehow to me at least it has the feel of a more historic more iconic track. Even though it's not and that's simply because they did a great job of designing it you know from that giant block wall. That looks like it's been there for century To the various challenges to allow out that really flows with the surrounding landscape. It's great looking. It's unique and an excellent all around test for riders. You know that now famous wall isn't just there for decoration. By the way that's part of the track up on top of it and that's how much elevation change. There is an arrogant. It's like a ride through the mountains but just a lot faster and you know without somebody crowding onto the double yellow line around a blind corner. The other great thing about aragon is how it mixes things up. The front part of the circuit is definitely more technical varying between mid speed and slower corners. And then things really open up and get more flowing on the back half including that big two hundred mph backstretch that really does even get some slipstream action on the motor gp bikes. But of course motor theory is going to be absolutely mental backstretch. But it doesn't even take that long for things to get going term. One is really fun. It's very hard heartbreaking and after that first lap once things get going. It's the perfect opportunity to outduel somebody on the brakes heading into that one The run up the hill to turn seven is also a great place for action. As is the heartbreaking turn twelve then that left right combo heading onto the backstretch an backstretch is really one of the highlights of this track for me. I mean just heading endlessly down towards turned sixteen there earlier. Get on the throttle. The later you get on the brakes at the end the more of a chance that you can surprise somebody heading into that. Big final bend back to start finish. Dicator of course is going to have an advantage to a lesser extent. Honda on the straight. But this is gonna be our best look yet. At how much zouqi may have gained back with that new rear ride height device are still gonna be losing out to the but maybe quite as much and of course yamaha's can have to make time in that area as well. The coolest part of this track though for me is the quasi corkscrew interns eight and nine tons of elevation change and it leads to a challenging high-speed left-hander that's very phillip island like so all the way around great stuff at track like i said it feels like a more historic track than one. That hasn't really been around that long. So that's where the racing now. Let's talk about the contenders the writers. I think have the best chance of finishing on the podium and this one maybe making it to the top step and taking home that trophy and more importantly the twenty five points and we've got to start our discussion of contenders in this one with fabio charro. Fabio was right in the middle of his late season slump when modo gp landed in aragon for two in a row last year and while he qualified on the polymerase one that was the highlight. He struggled mightily in that first race and only rebounded to eighth the second time around. But it hasn't been all bad for fabio in aragon he was fifth in two thousand nineteen and more importantly things are vastly different this season than they were one year ago at this time actually a little less than a year ago. Fob has been the fastest rider all year long in just when things started to look a little bit suspect in austria will watch brought it right back. Around with his blistering performance in silverstone this race is going to be a little bit more challenging. Thanks to a pair riders. We're going to talk about next but fabrio still for me is kind of the ryder. Beat right now. Even though like i said he's not that enthused about the track he might be playing it. A little bit cagey one way or the other. There's no question that if he can avoid any incidents in this one he'll be in the mix for the podium the entire way from start to finish now for the opposite situation. We need to look no further. The mr mark marquess because we're harare has been absolutely brilliant all year long but isn't good at aragon well with mark his results and his number of retirements this year. Really don't instill much confidence at all but his career at aragon been pretty spectacular in seven motor. Gp races mark has five podiums and every single one of those podium results victory and he's qualified on the pole in five of those seven races as well and yes. He's still working on getting back to being the marquez. That we knew before and there had been a lot of mistakes along the way. Some like last week's run running with martine totally avoidable. That's actually more concerning than the ones that weren't avoidable. But the speed is returning and we already saw what he was capable of back in germany when he gets to attract where he really feels. Confident and arrogant isn't quite saxon. Ring for mark in that respect but is pretty close me and he's really really good here and i think that that confidence in the track combined with speed that seems to be increasing each every round is going to make markelle podium contender. As long of course as he doesn't make any big mistakes now another writer they could easily give fabio run for his money sunday..

"But i would say that his body position is more of a hybrid of past and present writers. He doesn't sit up quite as far as someone like colin edwards. Who was really for me. The last of the old school riders in terms of style. But i would compare him to like dany pedrosa especially early dani pedrosa in all sort of been speaks. Young riders to learn silverstone and the reason that violator brought that up is because of our discussion on the pre ratio where there are so many writers who really didn't have any or hardly any moto. Gp experience at silverstone because so many races have been cancelled over the past couple of years there. And i mean joe amir we talked about this on the pre ratio. His last race at silverstone last weekend was emoto three some that prompted him to wonder how well young riders learned to track like silverstone where they may be having seen it hardly at all and mapped it out in numbers and of course i love numbers And the numbers you posted are kind of interesting because there's a wide variety of results. Some of them not surprising that guys like mark and valentino danny petrosa dwell in their first ever ride around silverstone. Although i'm assuming that you may have just done entire british gp which means donnington as well before two thousand ten for a few of those guys because rossi and producer they rode their first british gp at donnington But there are fair amount of riders. They're more recent ones that did start their motor. Gb career at silverstone with middling or even bad results. And i think that would be characteristic of a lotta tracks. I think if you met that out for every track you would find a similar variety of some writers doing really well and some writers not so much. It's really far. More of a tossup for a motive gp writer their first time around especially when a motogp bike because it varies by rider and their method and some riders just seemed to get along better with some tracks and some have very unique way of learning a new track. The first time they get to it. I mean some of you may know that. Ben speeds for instance he used to look at attract map and then figure out. What kind of animal look like so phillip island for instance looked like a kitten lying on. Its back so then he would go out there and just visualize writings. motorcycle around. The giant kitten laguna seca. T. rex going wrong and so on and so forth all right. Those of you who've been around long enough to know exactly what i'm talking about but those who don't all you have to do is go to youtube and type in the ben speeds method and then enjoy by the way that's the second been speeds reference in like the last three minutes. Anyway all right. Let's get back to the race here. andreas asked a very simple question about the marc marquez. Where he martina incident which we didn't talk about too much on the post ratio. What would have happened. If that had been joined. Zarko that run into where. Hey martine instead of marquess. And i think that's a fair point because if that had been showing zarco with his history and his reputation absolutely bene- penalty in the end. But i do think that race direction absolutely would have announced to everybody that the incident was under review at the very minimum. But we talked about this the couple of weeks ago. I think it was the more famous the more successful. You are the more leeway. Get especially if you don't have that reputation that somebody likes arco has and that's not a knock against mark saying that he did something shady and got away with it. I mean he himself admitted after the race he messed up and he was way too fast into the corner. Not expecting that martin would be there some. It was a mistake. But if that is arco way more of a chance that there's some sort of response from the stewards at the very least to review. Maybe some sort of penalty in the next round. Which of course would have been this weekend at aragon as side note. Andreas also loved the fact that there were six manufacturers in the top six slots he says. It is good for competition and it certainly makes things more fun for me to talk about for all of us to talk about when there are more riders capable of finishing at the front. Battling for a podium. One hundred percent agree posting link where he said that the retiree got was the compound he thought was best the soft but the particular tire he was issued by michelin was not good and the bike was sliding from him in the corners He then pointed to some other riders and other instances where the michelin's have been inconsistent saying that. That was the cause of jack. Miller's problems in austria and valentino rossi and silverstone also complained. Obviously the tires aren't all complete. Junk right i mean someone won the race and that someone believe had soft- software attire three guys finished on the podium and none of those guys were complaining about tire so michelin can make a tire. That's capable of performing well making it to the end of the race but that doesn't mean that consistency can be an issue here and the problem is that's an issue that's really hard to track down because if there are consistency problems. You really don't know about it until they happen until you're the one in a race and the tires just aren't working. The way they had the rest of the weekend michelin obviously is going to be a little bit defensive about this. There aren't necessarily going to admit that problems do exist and admit that there's a chance you could get a crap tire for the race but it is something to watch for the rest of the season and see if it does affect anybody else now. The good news is that michelin dibba respond. A few weeks back in austria. Remember when miguel olivera had those chunking problems and they were placed. That speck of tire didn't help me gal in that race i mean it was too late for him but at least they are responding. It just remains to be seen if these are isolated incidents or if it's something that's going to crop up again and that kind of prompted jose to say. Hey the solution here is simple modo. Gp just needs more than one tire manufacturer. Now for those who haven't been around a long time. It's been one manufacturer for a while. Can't remember exactly the two thousand twelve. I can't remember exactly how long it was before michelin was bridgestone. Before that tire wars man everything was open and to go back there a bit of a pandora's box now. I don't necessarily disagree. Because in addition to petco back ni- being upset after silverstone with the tires we've seen ktm struggle with the fronts. That are too soft. And you know i would think that valentine rossi would say things haven't been the same for him. Since the manufacturer switched from bridgestone is a single tire supplier to michelin now. The advantage of bringing back more tire manufacturers even just.

And there's a beach there. Where all of a sudden these Centipedes giant Centipedes Are eating, like all the birds on the island. When I see giant Centipedes. These are Centipedes. Were calling it a prototype for next year that bycatch a revised chassis or vice swing arm and tail section as well as a new exhaust. But we don't know anything about what was under the ferrings. The kind of formed a contoured scoop in the body itself that seem to channel air along the tail maybe working in conjunction with that scoop that sitting midway up the fairing and they appeared to have a more pronounced chin spoiler to and some gigantic scoops on the front brake rotor. Juno Becomes World's First Graphene Skinned Plane
