"The run the Braves get here. So 54 fillies bottom 42 down bases empty and Aussie al bees with big leg kick puts the foot down and he takes inside Ball one. They're just finishing up with Ronald Kun. You mean he's very talented. We've talked about that. But it's not every guy that's town of the like that that wants to be in the big moment. One. Oh, swinging him is wanted one on al Bees. "The Phillies won Atlanta looking for a sweep of the Phillies if they could get away tonight, Philadelphia five and three on the season, Atlanta started Owen four. They've now won four in a row to get back to the 500. Marcus Travis d'Arnaud backs away from an inside fastball, Ball one and, in fact, singing in the three game sweep that the Phillies had over the Braves to open the season. Atlanta scored only three runs total. In those three games. Is the 102 d'Arnaud, and it's Anthony's for a strike wanted one. But in their last five games, they're starting to look more like themselves. They've scored 5.4 runs per game 27 runs in their last five games. Yeah, this four game winning streak. I mean, they've doubled up opponents, 22 runs.

"And it's one and one on the Phillies shortstop who, of course for a few years. Late for Joe Girardi in the Bronx. There. Times in New York overlap for three years, 11 bounced in two balls and a strike. Dede was a free agent in the offseason as well, and he recited two year $28 million deal. With the Phillies, so there is a lot of continuity. In this Phillies lineup. A lot of changes on the pitching staff, especially in the bullpen, but a lot of familiar faces a lot of carry over from last year. Hey, they were a good offensive team a year ago. 21 and Gregorius fouls it back to a two Didi Gregorius seemed to be one of those guys that Joe Girardi just really loved. Um, you know, just how he came on, and you look at his path being know early on with the Arizona Diamondbacks. Excellent. Defensively. Things didn't quite work out there. The Yankees get him. You two on the way, and he fights off another one to stay alive. And remember, he comes in as a Yankee. He was the shortstop that followed Derek Jeter. Job that no one wants, right. It's like the job because I want to be the guy after the guy that follows, you know a great manager or a great player like that, but a lot of pressure did he had to come in and play under, but No, he stood up strong and it was really good for a couple of years to two is down lower, full count now on Gregorius with two down on.
Atlanta Braves and Philadelphia Phillies to meet at Citizens Bank Park
"Shortened 60 game season last year. Baseball returns to the full slate of 162 games. The Braves Open in Philly today is W S. B. J Black reports. There's unfinished business. Atlanta's rebuild its rotation with the additions of Drew Smiley and Charlie Morton, who quickly see the Braves formula. So good dudes that just buy into what's going on. It's very rare professional sport where you have so many different guys that they all like each other. And Freddie Freeman anchors and elite line up with Ronald Akunyili, while Max Freed gets his first opening day start, was excited. Something that you dream about something that you work for top prospect. Christian Pasha is also rookie of the Year candidate. But the division is much tougher first pitch just after three around 9000 fans will be in the stands in Philadelphia today. The brace will allow about 13,000 for next week's home opener.

"Let's crush that Got a good look at his first pitch was looking a bunt for a basic got called for a strike. You pulled the bat back, but I think so many times that can help you just really lock in slow things down and get this one right on the screws. Good thing for Austen, rightly that It was a little too aside because had it been straight on would've Jumped up and maybe hit him in the upper part of the body. Yeah, you to warn that one he reached to his backhand side. It just grazed his glove, It goes is a double for real Muto and that'll bring up the Phillies third baseman, second year player Alek Bone. 65 to 25. All kinds of ability and potential right handed batter who takes outside Ball one. He was the runner up for the rookie of the year last year with the National League behind David Williams, the pitcher from Milwaukee, Bohm off to a bit of a slow start this year. Eating 200. He does have one home run, but there are some high high hopes. Or Alex Bowman. Both sides of the ball going forward, Big swing and a miss at a fastball there singing. It's one on one. Last night. I was impressed, caught some of the Braves Phillies game and Ball hit down the left field line and sort of NFL territory mean he ran a long way over the shoulder made a catch almost collided with Andrew McCutchen think McCutchen was a little surprised that he got that far but made a great catch trying to save the ball game. 11 on the way fastball right on the outside corner at the knees for you can't place it in there any better than Drew Smiley did on that pitch, and it's one and two. Just watching juice. Smiley's delivery talked about a little bit in the first inning. You know you were talking about how tough he's been on lefties but looking at just his delivery and release point. I didn't like guys like this. A real Muto is running from second. Throw down to third is not in time pitch. Take it inside for ball, too. And the catcher Jhc Real Mewtwo again. A terrific athlete. He just stole third base. You like being out there. If you're a runner with the left hand on the mound because his back is to you, you can inch out get a little bit more on the lead, and he had a great read made it real easy getting there. That's one of the things if you're going to steal third or attempt to With nobody out or two outs. You better be absolutely sure you're going to make it there safely and he wants Now the 22 on the way and a breaking ball up in the zone, popped up foul right side and.

Philadelphia Sixers Blow 19-Point Lead In 109-105 Overtime Loss To Milwaukee Bucks
"Nine sixers one five in overtime how this game overtime layup. Instead of dribbling out it could've taken that one yard bought david chen losing it on defense but in overtime it was y- honest and it was johnny sitting on the sixers courts. Ramona you have a problem with sitting down on the sixers four. Oh i've never seen before and this is a nice. Is it nice. Move like the bucks are kind of disregarding team in the eastern conference even though they ran away with it but like the last seven points or you want to run to close the game so i think for is go ahead and sit on the court take arrest degree breather and i did kind of his tweet at the end of the gate where he said like. Sit back and enjoy the show. If anybody's fans should appreciate that. It is joel. Embiid philadelphia seventy sixers fan. Cal shaw the only thing i have a problem with is celebrating beating philadelphia without their. Mvp candidate with him sitting over on the bench in street clothes. It's just you know. Would philadelphia be celebrating if they beat the bugs without you us. I don't know. I don't think that would be a big deal either. They had to come from behind. They made a nice comeback. I like milwaukee like holiday being added to the team. But but. I don't think this was a big win for them. And we kaplan i just think it's a little rich to hear philadelphia complain about janas doing this when he literally stole a book out of joel. Embiid's playbook giuliani. Does this stuff all the time. But this is one of those rare games. It was a win for both of them. I mean the sixers came in second half of back to back without embiid. They held the Bucks to their worst first half the entire season and then you have the books. They have their worse first half of the entire season and they've resilient and they wants us out of it and that's a win for them to i don't think this is t o celebrating on dallas star. But it is something you know. Yana said he's having fun. And i'm all for having fun but sit down. Phillies court and then taking a photographer's cameras snapping pictures blowout win vs india last month. He's having a lotta fun at the expense of is eastern conference rivals in it and as an unofficial historian of nba pettiness. I'm all for it but pump the brakes you be without without embiid. They blew a nineteen point lead. You almost blew the game at the end of it yourself. So this game looked and felt like a playoff game because you know what you gotta be careful doing stuff like this because you might see him again. You don't want to spend into the win too many times ramona and but the best part about this was the white house and he wanted to goes down. Yeah

It's a bit different. You know run-up. I'm used to obviously the weather being different Humidity being crazy and the weather's just been unpredictable. Weren't silly you know you kinda can engage it off of what time of the year it is with. What's going gonna get everything a little bit closer closer. North bennett is down. South texas louisiana alabama mississippi area but It's fun it's fun. it's been phillies. Did i remember hearing this year. Jalen that you played in the snow for the first time is that accurate Going going into the green bay. Where my i now. I mean we're playing and you know they told me in there and you know we're having fun and playing bob dole. Whatever you know we got some momentum going on the sideline and then I see. I see like you know it's cold. And obviously it was coco. And i see snow coming from this guy. You know little flurries. But i call this a no not you know it was. It was not me at the moment was real cold. Some somebody never done before. And what was your reaction inexperienced playing in it like out. You know they have so much stuff down there to keep you on. The bench is being more Different things that they can do to accommodate for the weather. How cold it is so. I really couldn't tell. That's why i was so surprised. Then feel that cold. But when i saw the snow coming down it is cold. So the fundus upon store. How will you remember your first season with the eagles jalen. I think i remember that a remembered as a true learning experience. Like anything and everything goes it up Kind of going through and deal with i think Grateful for an opportunity of a binge after to the eagles in an awesome being in the position and then now but nonetheless a lot a lot to learn from for me you know. I'm very not very critical of myself and i hope my myself to the highest of high standards when it comes to Doing things the way you know. I wanna dog it. So not that i can learn from from that first year About a good a lot of bad. And then there's there's always room for improvement in every in every asset every part of the game whether that's You know on the field stuff off the field stuff. You know how you league lead different people differently. You know everybody communique different and the leader of the football team as a quarterback so Just doing every being consistent in everything that i do Res progressives completed leading Communicate relationships all of those

John Hunter from The Frozen Rope Podcast
"Let's jump right in man to frozen rope. Let us know who you are and what you do. My name is john hunter. I am thirty years old from northeast. Philly i'm a union glazer by day but i am a podcast. Her by night a baseball podcast about three months ago during the world series. I decided to go for it. I never I always wanted to do it. But i just. It was weird. It was like a couple of years. There was a couple of years where i was just telling my brother like i wanna to do this. Like this is what i to do. And then you know just life happens or you. Just you know procrastinate on stuff and it just just ended up not happening. And i mean it's kinda crazy. I'm probably the only person you've ever benefit benefited from the pandemic. I decided like all right. Well i have nothing else better to do right now and i just decided that his by like all like the microphones already had headphones off but like my wife already had. My wife has a mac book. And i was like all right. Well why don't just get into it. And i'll do it. And then the world series happy. You know what this is what. I'm going to start it i. I was sitting on headphones stuff for like two months before i even recorded an episode and it was just like it was crazy. But that's pretty much how it all started. So how did you come up with a name the frozen ropes. Explain that all right so the frozen rope a frozen rope in its own. Right is a a line drive or a a like in basketball. It's considered like something that just like shack is. He just threw the ball pretty much of the rim. And that's like for baseball. Like i remember the first time i've ever heard the term. It was vladimir guerrero was playing. I think for the expos at the time and he threw a lot. He threw a liner from from the right field right to the catcher and the and the announcer was like that was a frozen rope and i was like i like that and then it became my gamertag on like xbox back fox three six and i was an like then it just over the years. I was like you know if i ever do one. If i were to go podcast the name of it will be the frozen row. Podcast and this has been since i was like. I don't know maybe like twelve. Thirteen new podcast. Ball's probably if i ever do something the frozen rope lock. That's also again all right so so explain a little bit about the process right three months in. Obviously you had the name. Since you're twelve yeah What about the logo and things like that. So the logo was pretty simple. Is the major league baseball. i mean. hopefully they don't come after me for infringement or anything but it's a. It's literally just a baseball. The baseball symbol. The major league baseball symbol with headphones on it and it started off as being red white and blue normal. The normal one and then. I got affiliated with media. Group called the buzz and they were just like you know we. We don't wanna get hit with infringement. They're like so. What can we do here. And i was like. I mean you could change the color if you want to your color scheme. And that's what they did. They changed it to their scholar. Scheme ended up working out pretty well. They put the ball in the headphones. And it was just completely just change. Everything about it so it was. It was pretty cool. That's awesome so explain a little bit about how you got connected with the buzz okay. So the i'm in like this. I'm a nerd when it comes to baseball. So i'm in a sports group simply just pretty much baseball. It's called sports chat but it's really not just baseball pretty much on a why they don't just change it a baseball chat whatever so it started off with that and then there's this guy like you know i told him i made episode or two and he's like oh give let me let give it a listen so he gave listen and he was like he's like you know me and my body just started a media group not too long ago with another group and the guy some. I went nuts so they just decided this move on from that it ended up being where they just were like a baseball podcast because they have like five. They'd five podcast on their thing right now and before me and all five of them were either for them. Were wrestling podcast. I don't know why you need that. Many good for them. And there's a guy who's actually from like england who's on there which is pretty cool. It's pretty cool. The way they do it. They're a great group of guys and it's pretty cool everything and then there was a guy. Then there's some rain on. I think there's a soccer program to that. They're trying to generate right now. Trying to get more people to watch and on anyone. You guys are in a soccer. But if he's argo try that and then Then they different stuff on there but it was pretty cool the way that it kind of came about and then i told them that i wrote. I've be right little articles. I've written articles for guys know the tattoo dunphy. So dunphy is a friend of mine. I've known for a long time. But i went to high school with a grade school. I believe too. And like i've known for a long time him in this other dude joe that i'm friends with a started a base. They started a podcast and stuff called like deep fly and they do a bunch of stuff for their own media group. So they asked me. Would you want to write for our so. I was doing like little baseball pieces for the phillies. And i would just write little things for them and it ended up being pretty cool. It was it was like a cool experience. So i get myself into that type of realm like i always wanted to do something baseball related. I didn't care what it was like i. I'm way too small to play and to old to play so it's just got past that and i was an in so i kind of looked on the other side and i don't know it's just something that i was always into so it all worked out well so so explain a little bit about So to download An episode from the frozen rope. What what can they expect. What some of the topics you hit Things like that So one thing i always. I'm a red sox fan. That's the start off. And i always tell people baseball fan. I red sox me and second. There's i never really ever wanted to do anything as far as just saying like i want to cover one team. Yes there is. Because i'm very diverse. When it comes to the sport. I know pretty much. I don't want to brag. But i know a lot i know i know pretty much everything enough to make my own podcast and be confident with the things that i say. Yeah so i feel as if when you go on there. You'll see someone who's not biased. You'll see somebody who you know truly cares about. The sport gives a good input on my thoughts. In how. I how. I look at the game. Yeah i got a guy the other day. Text me one of my friends from the from the union. Us just like it's crazy. It's like he's like. I feel like i know the game. He's like but you like no it and he's like he's like you. It's almost like i give him like a managerial like input. Like i've been around since i was like nine. My dad was a head coach of saint joe's prep. He was a great baseball player. I've been around the game my whole life and then it just you know i. It just been something that i've always been in love with. I told my wife. That's unfortunate. You are probably my second. Love will always be my first and she just tells me she hates me for that. But it's funny. it's just it's just. It's just how it's always been baseball's always been there you know and so it's i always wanted to do something with it and you'll see somebody who just did something with

No Kemba Walker Spells Danger for the Celtics
"Me if the Celtics don't have a healthy Kemba Walker by February 1st during major trouble like making kiss. This is a good by going deep in the playoffs. They got no chance you lose Hayward and then you're going to lose Kemba I get you get Tristan Thompson's great as as a auxiliary. Peace, but I I don't think it gives you a much different than what Daniel theis does. He gives you a toughness it gives you a rebound and gives you an athletic hard work and forward, but but it's not like either one of those guys. You can't neither one of them are scores. No, but they don't need a score of their know if they you know, if they if they don't have Kemba, I don't have Kimber. Yeah, right. I know right? Well, that's that's my big issue is if you don't have Kimber Kemba needs to be he's gotta be your number two guy Tatum's clearly your number one now. I don't think anybody would argue with that. But Kim is gotta be your number too. And if they don't have him you go from Kim, but it's Jeff Teague. And again, we didn't see a healthy Kimball last year. We remember Kimba as man. He just wasn't very good in the postseason you forget Charlotte Kemba and if you have Charlotte came up to me, then this team has a chance to come out of the East without Charlotte Kemba. All right, so I agree with that but I still don't think they're disaster. I think there's still a good team good team. Are you better I mean if it were just trying to invalid and prorating how many W's with a truncated season if it were an eighty-two Game season, I'm Kemba Walker. Could be a 45 6:20. Yeah. Yeah, I would I would agree with that but looking at it now without camp for half the year. Let's say let's say he doesn't come back until February 1st. So he's going to miss 2 months of a 72 game schedule. So what's that a third of the year? No not too much six weeks because they're starting on the 23rd of December. Okay, so often so just so I don't have any, you know, the I mean, I don't want to start trying to do math in my head. That's so humorous five weeks five six weeks probably, you know before he gets a hundred percent. He maybe maybe too much but they're going to come back to schedule. So at least 15 games. I'm sure this is why the Jeff Teague signing was so important. Oh it was I was a terrific signing and if I can put him doing what he should you know, how long we know who he is, you know, we know what it is and he's it's a high quality of such a high-quality auxiliary piece. He's a very useful auxiliary teasing. You're right. If you're going to make him a if you want to elevate him into a starter and a guy to your depending on then that's a different matter. But using him the way he said they projected, you know, that was an excellent pick up, you know, so but let's go through Bob without without a healthy camera. Tell me if they're better than any of these teams. Okay with our healthy Kim but like like a 90% Kemba ready Milwaukee. No. Toronto No the Nets. We don't know probably find Miami now clearly not know we go down there. Yeah, Philadelphia Phillies a mystery guest now, we think they saw that they they've done what they need to do. We think. All right. Let's see but I cuz I thought it would suck. Yes. I mean, yeah, I think seven Indiana is better without Kemba. Okay. So you got you got one more to throw in the mix Home Improvement team, but you know as Atlanta they're going to read during pooped on paper. The good thing is the good thing is even without camera there probably a lot for the play-offs but they you're talking about seven problems. I agree. Well, that's you know now why that's true. So I think we can agree on

Mvp on the south side in one thousand nine hundred seventy two plan for the white sox and two years later tony. He had what i thought was a but at the time was a fifteen year old kid in attendance. It was split. Check swing down the third base line. One out in the ninth inning against nolan ryan broke up the no hitter. The closest i ever came to seeing a no hitter in person with all the games. But dick allen he was a hell of a player probably didn't get his do then and michael schmidt one of your favorite players know a big defender of dick or richie allen whatever. He was particularly affiliate for mike schmidt. Just a wondrous player michael jackman. He's one of the greatest third baseman of all time.

"I think coal Irvine's in the mix for sure he shown a lot so far in spring training. I think to a lot of guys, you know, on the the coaching staff. So there's a lot of options for this team when it comes to just pitching depth. But I think right now the only locks for the rotation or Nola area dead. What would you consider the weakest part of this team outside of third base weakest part? It's it's hard. It's it's really art to be honest. I don't even you franca is weakness per se. I think the biggest weakness is like we said missing that bona fide solidified number two three starter in the rotation. And maybe just a another bullpen arm. But even that is a bit of a stretch because of the depths of guys that could be in this bullpen throughout the year. I think it's just that number two starter that they're missing once area thumbs down to three as your four that makes the rotation that much deeper in this lineup is as deep as any in the entire league. Let's face it. He likes being stroke. What what can you really say about coal? And you know, what what do you think we can expect you got the dub today? So I'd like to hear somebody else's opinion on coal that isn't Kohl's. Yeah. With coal this past season at citizens, Bank carp was visiting he kicked my ass and some any twitch stream that's bag because go that's bad. We ought the game that night and laughing. That's kind of held me Kohl's friendship. Started was over so many all nineteen twitch and. I think he's a very good pitcher. I think he's very underrated. A lot of people just view him, as you know, this control guy, but you know, e- can he can hit the rate or gun better than most. I think along with the control along with him being a lefty, he's very valuable to this chilies organization, and I think he has chance whether it's you know, in April in May, June two to get some actual starts on this Phillies. Bigly roster in stink disguise the limit for him. He puts in the work, which is something need to do especially with him being AAA. That's where you just need to get over that hope and kinda just make it, you know, he's the internationally pitcher year last year. You should sneeze at that. Because most of the hitters AAA or former major leaguers guys that are just on the cost of getting their or guys that are rehabbing. So he's facing some quality hitting and for him to have the past couple of seasons. He's had I think he's deserved. A check. To at least crack this rotation. I think he's got a legitimate shot. One of my favorite players on the Red Sox. He's just a gritty guy. A very good dude as well. I get a lot of mixed. Reactions from Phillies fans that gave Kappler is not going to be the manager very much longer after next couple years, but he's more than analytics guy. I don't think he's a puppet like Aaron Boone Liz in New York. I think he's a smart guy. I think that there is a place for analysts also plays for the eye test as well. You'd be a good mix of that. You'll get some of the better managers in the league. They can do that. What are your thoughts on Cape Kappler? Is he going to be able to provide? Is you go into quote unquote, ruin this team? Some people think what do you think of Gabe hypic he's gonna manage a team that year? I like Gabes manager a board since day one that he was announced as the manager. Like, all right. Let's see how this goes. I think a lot of people give him a ton of crap just from opening day when he pulled air Nola after six innings news in that was kinda like the sing that set the forest fire. All. With scape? Kappler being the manager. Here the whole analytics thing, I agree. I think there's room for analytics, I think there's room for the I test and with gave Kappler now that he has an actual team to actually coach, you know, last year, it was plugging pieces in here and there whether from injuries, whether it was the veteran trade deadline acquisitions at this team at it wasn't a cohesive unit..

"Sola tonight, we're presented by progressive insurance. And there's going to be a lot of conversation about thirteen years about what all of it means. It's been reported this point that it's a thirteen year deal. It has not been signed yet. But it's been agreed upon for three hundred and thirty million dollars for Bryce Harper is I've been saying all night. It means the Phillies become the first team in major league baseball history to add three skill position players in one off season that we're all stars the year before staggering aggressiveness from the Phillies unin deal. That's been on the table for quite a while. Now, something obviously sweetened the deal. And no matter what at this point. We're paying so much attention to the Phillies. I spent the whole break. Look at it. Phillies care me. Mean, I knew Phillies retro gear was good. I didn't know Philly's curry gear was so good. I don't have a favorite baseball team. I don't think it's wrong for me to just decide. Like, Bryce, Harper's got great hair. They're aggressive. You're spending money. I mean, I want to spend money on teams that spend money kind of make sense to me. And I think I think this is going to lead to a lot of wins. So for once in my life, I can support a team that wins a lot of games. Like, this is a pretty good a pretty good strategy and I can buy Harper jersey. And for once it's going to be good for thirteen years. I still got that Khalil Mack. Jersey sitting in my closet, forcing tears returned here. Derek Carr jersey. Derek Carr trade rumor come up I look over. My there's another one gone. I don't have to worry about that. If it become a Phillies fan. And this is where we are. And yeah, anybody anybody out there one a used Manziel Browns jersey, we got him or an Alouette jersey. I mean, we've got all the Menzel jerseys you could possibly want. There's a real conversation about the next thirteen years, and what it means to have a long deal long-term deal like this. But it's not about that. This is Philly. And this is a new Philly, and this Philadelphia Phillies team isn't worried about the end of it. They're worried about the now Jeff passan ESPN major league baseball insider was on the Wilkin show. "I think the Phillies, you know, could could stand benefit from from how it all went down. And and I think I ther harbor Matata will be on this team and would cap what would be, you know, a really momentous Aussies for them. I mean, they have gotten substantially better in my opinion. Yeah. Do you think one of the two makes more sense or would improve them more just from a talent or positional perspective? And and if they don't lend one of them for whatever reason do think Phillies fans will revolt or will they be able to look at all the other moves and save. Hey, we got better this winter, even without one of those guys, I think Philly's fan would reveal and, you know, why I mean, you know, it's because you know, the expectations were raised pretty high mean it was beyond the words of John Middleton. I mean, you know, the Phillies have been looking at those offseason for a long time. I mean, it was. You know, Manny Machado and price. Just didn't come freedoms. I dunno where I mean, they had targeted this off season as time to really start flexing their financial might and they have. I mean, look they sent I think the second most region dollars last off season. I think they're, you know, they're in the top five maybe top three this off season even before possible, you know, high money finding in one of those guys so they have flex their financial might I think given the way last year ended and the way, you know, expectations where this off season, and the fact that the market that they're competing for all we know against teams like the Padres and the White Sox for these players. I mean, yeah, I think people would be upset if they didn't sign one of them is that fair to the Phillies who you know, have had a really good off season. I I don't know. I mean, I think they should sign one of them. I mean, they have the payroll do it. They have the you know, they have the roster flexibility to do it. And I think that me more than anything is what is impressive about their off-season. They made all these moves signing traits and not once they compromise. Is really, you know, they're flexibility. I mean, they are sitting here making all this moves that we talked about and still Bryce Harper and Manny Machado fit somewhere on the roster who's the better fit. I think just positionally because he third base. He'd be an elite defender an elite offensive player. You know, Manny Machado is probably the best baseball fit. Is he the best fit period for franchise city? I don't know. I mean, people are constantly debating, you know, his his hustle, his attitude, and I it's not for me to jump into that. I don't know what kind of teammate is by all counties, terrific teammate. I don't know how Manny Machado or Bryce Harper would respond after getting a a major contract. They these are things that they are considering and when you're talking about a contract of this size, and this kind of dollar value, you know, sometimes more than baseball things factor into it. And that's that's part of it. I mean, those extra variables you know, could influence decision, but look Machado might be a better position fifth. But. For to. I mean, they they haven't outfield the hell down right now by Nick Williams, who has had a, you know, a decent started major league career. But he could you know, they could easily upgrade there. And then they would roll Andrew mccutchen and newborn Harare slash Roman Quinn and possibly Bryce Harper. So there there's there's a fit for both these guys on the roster. I guess we're just gonna talk about these two for the entire segment that we're doing here. But you know, now now that players have reported to camp beard, you're down there. It's one thing you try to as a team you try to get moves done during the earlier part of the offseason. So that you don't end up in this position where everybody on the team knows that the Phillies are in pursuit of many Machado or Bryce Harper. But at the same time now everybody's together. You've got Michael Franko Scott Kingery out there playing to win third base. You've got a dual Harare Nick Williams Roman Quin trying to win two spots in the outfield..

"You wanna talk about the Mets talk about them. Well, I'm just saying do you think they have a shot to win the NFL east? I say. Twenty percent twenty percent. And yet this guy their GM waiting on the Phillies right now because if the Phillies go get those two players, I think I think the Mets are behind them. And I think the Mets might be fourth. So if Machado or harp they both of them. I would say Phillies are to Phillies. Your only two I was still sitting. I still like the Braves, I know, I know even with both maybe last year wasn't fluke. I have no idea. But I don't think last year was a fluke either. I think they have a lot of potential with this team. They're young. I do I I just think maybe just with that much power at the bats and still so much attention at the pitching rotation that the Phillies have and their defense is not very bad either. This team can win the division as well. It'll be very close between the Phillies and the and the Braves for sure I will say that the least I feel like is the most wide open division right now. I will say that with as much as I do. The Braves entrust that they'll continue to play good baseball and move forward. I wouldn't be surprised if they're the team all the playoff teams in the National League this year that took a step back. Because I don't I don't think the brewers are going to take step back. Don't think the dodgers are gonna take a step back. See don't think the brewers was a fluke. No, don't you think they'll be back in the? I just like they're they're very balanced team to me like I feel like. I feel like as a zone Kane and Christian yelich really good players to to have around like to be in the lineup Christian yelich, man. One of the best players Badri based what we agree on that. In the way that the the brewers pitch. They don't really rely on one person one pitcher true. I like their approach they're innovative. They're interesting. And I think it's like an all hands on deck Taina kind of atmosphere for them. So. Yeah. But the Braves I could see slumping because like they got a lot of young players. So yeah, they had a really good young sees maybe they have like a sophomore slump type year. Right. Yeah. I album like those guys you could see like, maybe. I'm not saying they're not going to be great players. But you could see like maybe they get off to a tough star. Or I don't know the Braves also don't have the best pitching in the world either. I don't know if. What happens? You could see Donaldson not being a factor. Donaldson is their prized possession. So far and free to see what if he gets hurt. What if you miss any games? Like, then he doesn't matter. Right. Spend it for eighty games like so many others. I mean, you know, what I mean? Right. Like like Donaldson's a wildcard, I think Donaldson could be somebody who is arguably in MVP candidate X year, or he could be somebody who's absolutely worthless. Like he is such a wild card type of player. Yeah. Absolutely. And like all the teams that are that when the playoffs they could make it again, it sound like there was no way that Hughes making it back. There were so many of the alias tea or the ale playoff teams who doesn't make it back. If you had to guess of the teams have made the playoffs in the just general. So I think in the NL the Braves are the team that's the most likely not to be back. Would you agree with that? Or would you say another team of and you can use the cubs too because we could talk all honesty. Honestly would say cubs. Yeah. I would probably you're gonna you're gonna keep it the Braves I'm gonna keep it the Braves because the cubs have the ability to make some bigger moves like I wouldn't be surprised if the cubs came out of nowhere and signed Harper. You know, what I mean like, I'm not saying they will. But there's a possibility because they do have deep pockets. They do have an already really good lineup. Kris bryant. Rizzo. I mean, those are really good players. So. Pitching's not have done. Well, let me read off each team..

"Sort of saturated right now, particularly among teams that have designs on contending in the near future in the Phillies. I dunno like it's down to the Phillies and the brewers. I think are among teams that don't already have somebody to fill that position which made it kind of a tough market to sell secure in. And I don't know. Maybe that means you, wait. Maybe that means you don't do it right now. Because this is even with all those caveats, even though I like Crawford a lot. And I think he's got a relatively high floor and still has more potential than somebody with with his major league performance Legia to believe even though I think that there's still value in Santana had they not get more. Like there was I saw the I saw Zack athlons name come across the time line and before dug a little bit. And this wasn't being reported by by anybody credible. When it's like, okay, if effluence the other guy in this trait, I'm still okay with that. If on the Phillies 'cause sicker is that good and Crawford at this point. They're just out on like, you don't give Scott King. Henry all those chances that he got particularly at shortstop where he's he was in. So obviously over his head and move move Crawford around a third base. Like, they did, you know, you don't do that. If you believe in a guy, and it's just I'm shocked. They didn't get like I didn't think they were going to get six. Oh Sanchez or anything like that. But I thought, you know, another lottery arm another Phillies have so many live arbs in the low minors. I'm shocked that they couldn't pry one of them loose. And or if they couldn't they couldn't find another suitor to beat this package. I'm gonna put you on the spot. So Crawford has five years left before it hits free agency. Which is basically where you want to gain the most value from prospect so GRA is under contract for former seasons, and then has an option for a fifth year, which of those two shortstops, do you think produces more war over the next five seasons cigar, I think just gives him the bat front to let him build a a huge lead. It's possible. That Crawford puts up something like twenty wins over those. Five years, that's not out of the realm of of reasonable expectation for him to just put it all together in in that, you know, as it change of scenery guy, but cigar is so reliable right now. I don't know why that against him. And the, you know, the Phillies had they took such a beating last year because they were playing Hoskins add a physician and because they didn't have a shortstop and by getting rid of Santana and acquiring cigarette. They fixed both of those things in one go, and they've still got the financial wherewithal to go after at least one of Machado Harper or Patrick orbin, if they can get you know, if they can get Machado to to buy into playing third base there. So this steel made a lot of sense for the Phillies. I'm just it. You even look at the look at the relievers. They got back like pases fine. Like the Phillies needed a lot of death in the bullpen Mukasey is not the guy who was a couple years ago, and maybe Pazos is a little bit better than replacement level. But that's still useful for the way the Phillies. Season shook out last year, the the whole cer- trying to fill and I'm just. Like the Mariners Terry at all down for and they're not doing better. You know, they're not doing they're not getting enough back to to get excited. And they dad so such a little such such little prospect and Asian of build on that, you know, this just doesn't feel like offering in new era at feels like giving up. I do understand why the Mariners are rebuilding. They play in division with the Astros. And even though they want eighty nine to eighty nine games last year. They had the the factory and record below five hundred. They were really lucky and they still didn't make the playoffs. And while it's disappointing to see a team came close to the playoffs. Take a huge step back. I understand it..

"Potential thirty five million dollar a dollar a year deal with a guy who could be sliding into some sort of a mediocre talent or mediocre numbers. It's just to me. It's it's sort of crazy to think that you're going to put this much money into to one potentially two guys. And I just think not only I think the Phillies aren't going to get it. Because I think there's other factors Machado potentially returning to the dodgers. And and like I mentioned before Harper going to the cubs. I just think it may not be the best move finance going forward. Quick untimely comment here not about this Klay. Thompson has broken the NBA record for the most threes in a single game. Ten in the first half early in the early in the second half. Unreal. Okay. Yes. Look, you mentioned three very good players there. It's and it's. Do we have to pay Hoskins thirty five million dollars a year right now? No. But you mentioned that Bryce Harper is proven. And the bigger fact here is the free agency works, and you know, that guys get paid when they hit free agency, especially when they changed teams through free agency. It's the nature of the game. And it's what you have to do if you want to acquire top talent like Harper Machado. And you know, what gimme all three. And thank God Hoskins is going to be cheap for another couple of years. So we can afford it that works for me. I don't I don't I'm not going to say no to Bryce Harper. Just because Hoskins is in the lineup. You know, this is this Phillies team that has the same aggressive feel as that didn't twenty twenty seven when they looked ready to make big moves in hopes of World Series berths. They look ready. They look eager and they have money to spend plus the relationship with that put them in the driver's seat. Here the Phillies want to announce to the rest of baseball that there are team to be reckoned with. And I believe that they'll sign one if not both of these guys in pursuit of their of major league baseball relevance and World Series berth. Ninety seconds. On what what did they make that were huge free agent splashes in two thousand and seven that over the edge of the I mean, I'm not that playoffs. I'm not saying specifically just free agent signings..
"phillies" Discussed on You're Wrong... And Here's Why
"Then we tried to get Machado in July that didn't happen. Now. We have this lady on bell situation that we keep looking for. And that's not happening. There's just this feeling that everything is going to fall into place in the Phillies building and building. And we're gonna we're perfectly live for Machado and end Bryce Harper. And it's just not gonna work out for the Phillies. There's too many other factors. There's too many things and a guy like Harper's spent all this time on the nationals sky wants to win now and this Phillies team even with him isn't ready to do that. There's just no doubt about it. So to me, that's probably the one of the biggest reasons the fact, the Phillies aren't ready and even by adding these guys they won't be ready to win RLS address us first. Points. Yes. Lebron James did not come to the Philadelphia. Seventy sixers. He decided he wanted to be a movie star and build his brand quite Leonard was not a free agent. He was traded to another team. Leon bell is not insured to anyone yet. I can see one of those three the others points. Chris. I don't know what that means regardless. So with their four-games two one win over the dodgers. The Boston Red Sox. Make the case is one of the best teams in baseball history. Right. And now we got to free agency providing teams of a chance to narrow the gap between them in the Red Sox November third players at the chance to start signing with other teams and free agency in this year's crop. Like, you said, it looks really interesting. It looks like it's going to be one that is really hotly contested that brings us to the Phillies. This is a team with deep. Pockets giant ambitions and only sixty eight point nine million dollars committed to their twenty nineteen payroll. You say we can't have nice things. I remember a lot of nice things that have come to the Philadelphia Phillies and free agency. I don't think you can argue with that this. If we're talking about the big the big four sports teams in Philadelphia, and I will even concede the flyers in that group against my wishes the Phillies have been the team that did the best job of bringing in premier talent. Last summer. We heard that there across down brothers the seventy Sixers for star hunting and make no mistakes. The Sixers the Phillies are star-hunting as well only. They have the resources to succeed where the Sixers fell short the Phillies are team on the rise. And the first season new skipper, Gabe Kappler. They were certainly up and downs. No one's going to argue that. But at the end of the day, they looked looked like a team that was a year ahead of where we thought they were and that they're going to be ready to compete earlier than expected. You mentioned this. You're right. They faltered down the stretch the second half. We'll really the second half of the second half was kind of brutal. But I would argue that was really the lack of all that held them back. And I'm confident that the deal has. You know, this team has their eyes on offense stars like Harper Machado or both them to cure that problem. Sure their payroll is low, but are you willing to potentially put together sixty plus million combined free of these guys on a yearly basis? We already saw the issues that Machado had in Los Angeles this year in the postseason, whether it's his talk about not being a hustle guy or the dirty play that happened in the NFC s with the brewers first baseman. It seems like that's an attitude that may not fly with a guy like Kappler who's already had his run ins with a player. Like Jubal Herrera who was prone to do some of those lack of hustling plays that we saw from Chato in the postseason, and Chris I don't want to continue to disparage the flyers in two thousand two they made that huge trade for Tonia Monte who was way past as prime. We can't get that the flight risk grab the flyers were always willing to spend money under Ed Snider, they just spend it in the wrong ways every single time and never got a goalie..

"Sign up bonus. All right. We're back. Gregory tell me why hearts are going to be broken in Philadelphia. This winter why are the Phillies gonna miss out on Bryce Harper and Manny Machado? Well, here's the fake. I think it's because everybody actually get some sort of foregone conclusion. Everybody has the Phillies as betting favorites to land. Not just Bryce Harper. But also Manny Machado even money odds to get Bryce Harper. At least they were as earlier today, and they were plus one fifty to land Machado easily the best odds of anybody for both guys. And here's the thing. The reason why they're not going to get either of them because the Phillies have bigger problems than just their line-up, plus Philadelphia as fans we're just not allowed to have nice things. It's just how this works. It'd be great. If it would work out where we would get two of the bigger names and free agency, arguably the two biggest depending on what happens with Clayton Kershaw. You're talking about two guys who anywhere in your lineup can solidify what you're putting together with a team that competed basically all year until September collapse. But let's be honest for some reason these big name guys don't come to Philadelphia. Let's take a look we had the year and a half to two year watch for LeBron James now that turn out has house, Los Angeles treating you. Then there was the collide Leonard sweepstakes didn't win that one either..

"We did not see coming. Let's start there. We'll start the Phillies. Why not? I guess it's kind of general that the Phillies are in the position they are in. That's something a lot of us to Nazi coming. No. And they, they had tied the reds for the most losses last years. And so you know, like what we saw it common in that they did it the right way. They brought kids up. They let them, they put them in a learning environment. They let him suffer and fail and succeed in all those things. And you knew it was gonna turn a corner at some point. I mean, they they had a plan, but I don't know, you know, they won the injured. Dave already surpassed are about to surpass last year's when total, which they didn't get to until September last year obviously. So yeah. And you know, with the thing, I don't know if there's one thing that surprised me after we seen them long enough, you're no longer surprise, but the way that pitching's held up and when you have a bunch of young guys, you think, okay, those boys are gonna hit a wall. Those voice have not hit a wall Nola and pa- Vada and Velazquez pitching better than ever in into in heaven. Jake Arrieta. At the top, I'm sure sets tone in terms of work ethic and they're fun team to watch in. You know, like just set the numbers aside when you watch Nick Williams and Reese Hoskins and Mikhail Franko and those guys they, these are guys that think they belong. And I, you know, that pose well, I do. I still think than Washington nationals are gonna win the National League east every time you watch the Phillies or Braves, yearly, certainly less Europe. Yeah, absolutely. The, it's I think the most fascinating division race going down the stretch because there's there's no bad story to come out of that if national storm back, that's a great story in its own weird way. And of course, if the Phillies are win winning, that's pretty great story too. But shout out to Pat Nick, six months ago. I was talking to Pat Nisha in the Phillies clubhouse in spring training. And he said, quote, last year was kind of messy, but I feel like we're way of headed way ahead of where Houston was in twenty fifteen. He was on that Astros club in twenty fifteen that stormed to the wildcard. He said, quote, I know they have the money to add if we start winning and the analyst isn't that great this year. So Nisha knew he knew way before any of us that this Phillies team could be something special, but richer. Let's talk about some other revelations. How about the Pittsburgh Pirates? Right? I mean, that's definitely a revelation that was a club that was roundly dismissed at the beginning of the year for having traded Garrett. Cole, having traded Andrew mccutchen to their franchise faces loan, behold, and even was easy to dismiss them even after their great run at the start of the season because they quickly fell back down to earth. I think they lost thirty one of forty five at one point, but then they kinda put themselves back in that very cumbersome, complicated complex, an wildcard, picture and loan and made a deal for Chris Archana that, yeah, to go from forty and forty eight now to be to have one of the best records in baseball since then. And you know, like the idea that they all season would disaster that they trade Garrett Cole, they traded Andrew mccutchen. And the whole thing's going to hell that just that was a good narrative I made for good talking points on sports radio and all that..

"That's that's quite all right as far as like he's not been in the league not fresh fresh rookie or something like that are quasi rookie like reese hoskins is but tim ries hoskins they got cesar hernandez is playing really well i mean they got a lot of players who've been kind of toiling around in that phillies phillies team it's not very good now finally they got their pitching pitching figured out with noah in i mean they have been till ask is who's throws of those absolute bullets i mean velazquez came over in that deal from the from the astros for ken giles on the really making a push for the playoffs so there's been definitely a lot of a lot of good trades going on when it comes to the phillies and now they're trying to transition from ryan howard jimmy rollins chase utley led phillies team to a younger team where you have now obviously reese hoskins we'll herrera trying to think of more obviously they got the thing is they did get some get some veteran talent and there's well of carl's got carlos santana from the from the indians right yeah from the indians last year and i know he's holding down at first base for them with hoskins playing out in left field is they're both hidden really well guy gazi aaron altea air farro behind the plate i mean all these guys kind of just you know just hitting the ball in the cover off the ball all over the place so the unlike the fact of your phillies fan you weren't expecting to be good maybe more year way we're always these teams that are your way that are maybe like okay they're actually going to be good this year they're they're already seven games over five hundred they just sweat the giants in four games and that's not really saying much but that's what happened i mean they've won twenty two and fifteen the what's nothing wrong with that nothing wrong at all at that the only problem is you seek out to see if the historian it they got us sustain it with these young players.

"Ability seriously in so gathering information from from all possible sources including our efforts in our department was part of the process in in those major signings was going to be the softball question i know to softball question but when i've talked to phillies people before under the the sort of newer regime one of the things that's come up time and time and time again is just how much of a family feel the front office feels like a hold of the the organization is just warm and accommodating and i dunno loving even just across the board supportive and you think of how you might picture like a analytical i front office for some other baseball organization you think you know unfeeling robots like you do but the phillies seemed to have built just this network of really strong relationship so the softball question builds on that but essentially has has this been your experience when you were coming in did you expect to receive the sort of support and familial feel that it sounds like you and pretty much everyone else's received yeah so you know growing up phillies fan e kind of there's a sense that there's a like a family field to the phillies organization and joining the the front office i kind of figured i'd find out the real story but a but it's true it's a fantastic group of people you know beyond just baseball perations but throughout the front office in it's something that is really important that we're going to maintain people think about it keep it in mind during hiring processes to make sure that this is someone that fits culturally in will be another positive source of energy in the front office also that my my very first day my boss got friedman took me around the baseball perations department introduced me to everybody in so we kind of walked around here all the way down the hall is where andy macphail the president is in we got down his office and he was on the phone so didn't meet him then.

"So is there still a poll for you in any other area or are you fully committed for the long haul working for team is not something that ever occurred to me i majored in music education i school school band for three years after college so i can't overstate the degree to which working in baseball was not a focus of by but it was kind of it's the the dream that you never really admit that you have a didn't admit it to others i never really admitted to myself so when the opportunity presented itself and in the past year it's been been fantastic and i don't really have any regrets i don't don't really see myself transitioning back to to writing the public sphere but that's not to say that don't things don't miss i miss the the wealth of knowledge that's out there in the good writing and the just the connections you're able to make with people across the basal writing thing it's you know here i've got my colleagues we talk about what's going on in baseball and we still obviously have very strong opinions but we kind of keep it in house and the ability to talk to whomever is out there is something that is just one aspect of the baseball community and it's definitely something that i miss on a daily basis i understand that given that you're recording this from the phillies liberal an office that maybe you can't maybe you might have a little biased opinion on this one but when you were going into working for a baseball team versus your actual experience i know that one of the the grace concerns i've always had about the potential of working for a team is his thing about the you know the quality of life the freedom that you get during the week all the the standard concerns of being i don't know if it's overworked but just work heavily and consistently to the extreme.

"Unfortunately there's a there's a competitive nature amongst several teams in this in this in this league and the phillies are one of them so that's that's a tremendous honor to be able to say that into to sit here and put this jury today phillies i mess around phillies have always been about spending that money i think we've seen this before and i think that in an older baseball fans remember this was this around one thousand nine hundred eighty were there seemed to be some what what feels like collusion and there was there was a lawsuit within the players union towards the owners about collusion and keeping prices down with some of these teams with a lot of the teams and making sure that there's no inflation salaries there and it seems to be the same way with a lot of these guys and so when we talk about the labor unions and being able to push up major league baseball has i feel a very strong labor union strong enough to go out them if they wanted to file a lawsuit again it's still going to be very difficult to prove collusion here but i think he's right there's been some questionable stuff out there about how much is paid for when we've been looking at over the last ten years salaries inflated teams that wanna win paying astronomical numbers for that to all of a sudden they're being a flat line and you could try to tell me that it's part of the baseball but i've still seen part of what baseball is part of the baseball atmosphere of maybe there's not that many good players i think we've see more home runs we see more strikeouts in might be glorified homerun derby but we see more of that more people are coming to the ballpark now more people are watching the games you got a younger audience it's trying to get into it younger players trying to get into it this throws me off a.
