"Shane Helms. And the hardy boys coming at me, and I said a load. Tool and none of them. Wade. None onset. Hello. And as soon as I saw that. I went straight to Lauren Itis, and is the brother here's the deal. And I told him the whole story. I say here's what happened. Here's what's going on. Well, he got all twelve guys together made us all the polish is shake hands who this stage. He's trying to have a job right now. He's got twelve guys. He's got to get over to you know, WWF. So we all show cans and did the whole thing and everything together. So we go out and have the match and from there, you know, we just really thought that, you know, everything was going to be okay. And then, you know, once the match happened with everything Jim Rawls after the match happened. You know, it was a bad match. We kind of stumbled over each other. We didn't have a good match me in Booker had ten thousand barn burners. We actually had a kind of a bad match and that night Believe believe. it or not WWF to the brain. They said, you know, what it's our fault. Pat, judge the main events, and we thought he was talk to you guys, and Johnny Moore nine is has you guys. So we thought he was tall to you. Nobody talked to you guys y'all do the best you could don't worry about it. Let it go. The next week was Atlanta, Georgia. So on Friday Jim Rawls God in me or on the phone. And Jim Ross says, hey, buddy is won't you know, if you take the weekend off, which was a gust and Birmingham, and then Atlanta that dome and he said take the weekend all that your head here. We got big plans for yet Phillips Reno Monday in Atlanta. So I was like thank you so much. Jim. I really appreciate it will the story got out and edge. Stuck like glue that my mother had called. To give me out of those shows. Now, why in the would I cancel two shows after already working with stitches in my head when I got two drives when I'm trying to fit into the WWF two weeks being there. I'm kissing ads. I'm walking on eggshells shaking hands. I'm kissing babies. I'm trying to get into WWF and do it. Right. And so somehow or another though the mother story to this day sticks like glue. And so we go out and do the whole deal I show up to the building. And they fire me, and I didn't even know there. Either raise my hand when they give me in the room. I raised my hand. And Jan Benz. Goes you don't gotta raise your hand more. I said we'll I feel like I do I'll go sounds like your farm me. And and Vince goes, oh, we're not firing you and said. We're we're releasing you. And I and I raised my hand again. And he goes more already says, you ain't got raise your hand. I've said, but was the difference in firing and raising and releasing and he said and the son of a bitch had an answer. He said, well, if we fire you we gotta redo your contract he said and every release you we can bring you back in three months and no problems and you just start back up with. And so at that stage, I knew they were polish shit. God bless them. But also new to start smiling shaking hands and just leave. And I did. So I are shaking hands kissing babies and realize it was just best to, you know, get out of there. And I've got my car ball and crime, and I called up my parents. They were in the stands. And I said, you know, it's town. It's it's tough you guys to come on home. And they were like, what do you mean? I go I'm on it's over. I'm not known anymore. Yeah. I'm not in the building. They're so young come onto. So you maintaining in the gym RAV set you up did your mother ever those phone calls -solutely, not mother never made those phone calls. And even I went the route like anybody else would I went the rat. Okay. Let's go the route that my mom slipped up and made the phone calls. Now, let's go this route. Why would you do the invasion of Booker t and book bag will into coma Washington? When the next week, you're in Philips arena. Why wouldn't you just wait a week and put book bag we'll versus Booker t at the Philips arena in Ted Turner's backyard?.

"They weren't there for a very long time. They were God awful. They went to the playoffs once and got swept by the Rangers. So they never wanna playoff game. There were never really legitimate threat. They had. Some great players, but you know, great jas Cova, not Kovalov Ilia Kovalchuk Chuck was very good player for them. But he actually stabbed himself in other places like the the devils going to astounding a file now with the Los Angeles Kings, Chris Chellios closed at its career in Atlanta. Bobby holy played there. There was some players to play. But honestly, die hard hockey fan. As I am did call a couple of games that Philips arena Lanta with the Rangers. It's it's this is nothing there that they didn't have gorgeous jerseys. There's no real history. I mean, unless you're Damian Rhodes fan, I just don't know why you would really tie the franchise together. So I think it's a great franchise that used to be there with nice jerseys. I think that's really the thing. You know, I could see hurricanes fans wearing Wailer jerseys because they did embrace their past recently, wearing the whaler jerseys. Awale jerseys are classic that makes sense to me. There was nothing classic about the Thrashers. Just again, I don't mean any disrespect. But I guess at the end of the day. I do just not lot of there there with the land. The thrashers. Bill says what your what is your idea of goals that are scored with the potential goaltender Fearance come from the booth instead of a coach's challenge in the playoffs. I I think they're wanting to cut down on the number of them. I mean, there's so much traffic in front of the net. We talked with EJ yesterday seems like every goals at affliction. There's so much traffic in front of that. You really want would football's proposing with pass interference the late in the game. Every time there's a goal scored. We've got a hold our breath now to see if it's going to be buzzed down. I mean, the coach only has one challenge if he's already used his challenge, and he's not going to do it. So I don't wanna sit there and just have a parade to the penalty box going to Toronto and trying to figure out if every goal scored was clean just get crazy forever. T? Eight says great effort by the hurricanes to push it to game seven last night as for tonight on pulling for my Leafs to win after the way that they dominated most of the game one is that the blueprint going into tonight. Yeah. But again, we've talked about this with this series. Was that a domination game about Toronto or just a no show by Austin because they played a much better game in game two in one. So Boston to me. I think is the better team. I think we can establish that doesn't mean the best. I'm always wins. But I think when both teams come with their game Boston's better. So it's really just a matter of what Boston team is gonna show up tonight. Because it seems like it's every other game just when they figured it out. And they win a game. They come up with a stinker. They can't afford a stinker tonight because there's no tomorrow. And I really think the Boston Bruins can win the Stanley Cup. I think they can. But they just been way too inconsistent to believe they can even get out of this series and win tonight rather than go on any kind of a Ron JR. What's the real threat to you see from the canes or the caps for the islanders? I just don't see either team being a problem. I'm hoping for Taveras versus islanders islanders in the next round. But you can't look ahead. If there's anything these plows have shown unpredictability, I just don't want the defending champs because at the end of the day if the fending Stanley Cup champions get out of the first round that usually they're Killys. He'll right. I it's d- make the playoffs because it's tough to make the playoffs now. And then you gotta game seven. I just have this feeling that if Washington survives tomorrow. They can make a huge Ron they really could. 'cause they've been there, and they know the adversity they faced before they faced elimination before. And they always seem to be able to handle it recently since they got over the hump of losing to the penguins over those last few years..

"Walking distance in my front door. I don't use mass transit for a number of reasons. I rarely use it. Let me put it that way, my hours, you know, there's no Marta bus running at three in the morning when I got to come into work here. And when I do take Marta, it's the rail heading down to Philips arena state, farm arena or Mercedes Benz stadium or to the airport. But it's not something I use every day. And I think there's a mentality for a lot of folks in my in my situation that I don't want the hassle. Of of that. I'd rather deal with the traffic in my car. So I think people like me that live in Gwinnett county, if you're forty five, and you rarely ever think about taking mass transit why why pay that extra one percent? Well, you know, if your pessimism turns out to be correct. And I think there are a lot of people who who would agree with a lot. Most of what you've said, this is what I think will it will come down to people will say the moment when that county decided to have this referendum voted on in a special election in March fate was sealed. Yeah. Our Jim Galloway wrote a really great column on Sunday where he looked at this issue. The truth is is that if it doesn't pass a lot of people think when we'll come back, and eventually, you know, they'll be the the Democrats will control the county based on demographic changes, and they'll get it in during a general election when turn out will be such that it has a better you mentioned the special election in March. Like two or three other votes. Tomorrow one is to replace a city alderman. I mean, this is a big voting day tomorrow metro-wide, there's there's just a handful of special elections out there. So it's you know, it's not like this'll be on the ballot and the presidential election in two thousand twenty where you're going to get massive voter turnout. It's it's going to be sparse tomorrow. Right. Right. I mean, you you were talking about all those people listening now in their cars. I mean, I'll bet you a lot of them as you mentioned us auto. Yeah. That then votes tomorrow, and you wonder if they've even had a chance to think about what am I gonna vote am I gonna vote or did did some of the motor early because early voting was there was a big schedule of early voting in Gwinnett county. But the demographics on that boat. Looked a lot like the kind of voters who would probably vote now. Sure, what what I what I do not like about the proposal is the fact that the the rail line would stop that far south Jimmy Carter boulevard the end of the line. That's not far enough. I mean, you look, I'm sure your subscription demographics show. There's huge growth in the northern part of. County and we've seen the DOT putting up those extra H O T lanes all up to Hamilton mill road because there's so many people that live in northern good at now if I were to nitpick on this referendum. It would be spend more on the rail and extended further north than on on the the other options, the Gwinnett transit the buses and cetera. Yeah, I think there are people who would say that and others might say. Yeah. But you know, it costs us. Million dollars a mile to build heavy rail. And we had our community forum last week in Gwinnett, some of the opponents pointed out that heavy rail. Maybe it's outdated. Maybe you need to think about light. Right. We need to think about other technologies that could be developed. We'll talk about those other technology, including one that's popping up possibly in Shambley, which I'm very excited about Kevin Reilly editor the journal constitution in studio to take your questions about tomorrow's big Marta referendum in Gwinnett county. "Also, six chambers pushback on workers, coughing and sneezing and Super Bowl fever may sideline. A record number of workers on Monday full of that story in about twenty minutes. More than any other singular reason the Super Bowl is in Atlanta this week because of a sparkling new stadium and a city that was willing to generate hundreds of millions of tax dollars to help pay for it. And Mercedes Benz stadium is indeed an architectural marvel with its distinct angular panels on the outside a roof that opens and closes like an Oculus and a one of a kind three hundred sixty degree wraparound scoreboard in the same breath sports columnist Dan Walkin at USA today says the venue is also a monument to Atlanta's unique proclivity for building new stadiums at great public cost, even though the old ones weren't that old to begin with, Dan you live there. What's being said? Well, you look at the city of Atlanta they've replaced in the last two years all three of their major scarfs facilities for their pro teams. And now one of them is not actually controlled by the city. Of atlanta. It was paid four hundred million dollars from Cobb County, which is just outside the Atlanta, proper, and they moved from downtown essentially out to the suburbs. But essentially, it's been a pretty amazing kind of overhaul of the. Abilities. And there's been a lot of public money used and in some ways that was all sort of leveraged against each other to be able to secure the public support or the political support or that funding and a lot of it is tied back to tourism taxes on hotels and rental cars and things like that. Land a huge convention city. A lot of other visitors as well. So. It wasn't sort of subject to this kind of robust public debate about whether or not it was appropriate to use the money on on those sort of facilities that just kind of happened. And certainly a lot of the leadership of the city believes that it's worth it because Atlantic consistently able to attract these big time sporting events like SuperBowl. Then those venues was very old, right? Yeah. That's an interesting part of the story as well. When you look at the life span of sports facilities should be twenty years. So be thirty years. Whatever you think it should be in Atlanta Philips arena now called state far Marino, which is an NBA facility. That was only eighteen years old when essentially got gut it and in two hundred million pump into pay for that Turner field was built for the nineteen ninety six Olympics repurpose and given to the Braves and then twenty. Years later, they're moving in the suburbs. And then the Georgia Dome was twenty five years old which is logo older, but not that old was in pretty good shape. But it wasn't the kind of revenue generating Golding for the NFL team that a lot of other cities have because I didn't necessarily have some the luxury amenities and sweets, and it also didn't allow the falcons to control the revenue a year round basis of things I concert and other events that will coming in there. So this new building talking to centrally got a sweetheart deal on it, and they control all revenue now. So basically, the owner is making a lot more money. We're being with Dan Walkin sports columnist at USA today. He's written a piece entitled is the two point four billion dollars Atlanta paid for new sports stadiums. The last two years worth it. Is there a fair and accurate way to measure whether or not these venues ultimately will be worth it. You can necessarily come up with a number or an analysis that would tell you exactly whether or not it's worth it. Because I think sometimes the benefit of having an event like the Super Bowl or the final four whatever it's sort of incalculable. And I know that people try to come up with economic impact studies, but driving those things are very flawed and their methodology. There is I think value to the city of Atlanta being on the minds of people not just for tourism compasses. But you know, there's a lot of media that comes in. And they go, right. Nice things about the city, and maybe that attracts business, or whatever you just don't know how that's going to impact on a on a rippling scale over a number of years. But the people in Atlanta, the leadership has made it a priority to bring events to the city that will make it Lanta. Atlanta's branding is an international destination. A very important city in the world, very core to their strategy. So I don't know how you measure it. But I in that respect it certainly does have some value. Dan, Walkin sports columnist at USA today. Twenty minutes now in front of.

What's being said? Well, if you look at the city of Atlanta, they've replaced in the last two years all three of their major sparks facilities for their pro teams. And now one of them is not actually controlled by. City of Atlanta. It was paid four hundred million dollars from Cobb County, which is just outside the Atlanta, proper, and they moved from downtown essentially out to the suburbs. But essentially, it's been a pretty amazing kind of overhaul of the. Abilities. And there's been a lot of public money used and in some ways that was also leverage against each other. To be able to secure the public support or the political support. That funding and a lot of it is tied back to tourism taxes on hotels and went to cars and things like that. Lantis a huge convention city. A lot of other visitors as well. So it wasn't sort of subject to this kind of robust public debate about whether or not it was appropriate to use the money on on those facilities that just kind of happened. I and surely a lot of the leadership of the city believes that it's worth it because Atlantic consistently able to attract these big time sporting events like SuperBowl. None of those venues was very old, right? Yeah. That's an interesting part of the story as well. When you look at the life span of sports facilities should be twenty years thirty years, whatever you think it should be Atlanta Philips arena. Now skullshaver Marino, which is an NBA facility. That was only eighteen years old when essentially got gut it. And then two hundred million pump into pay for that Turner field was built for the nineteen ninety six Olympics refocused and given to the Braves and then twenty years later, they're moving out to the suburbs. And then the Georgia Dome was twenty five years old, which is older, but not that old. It was in pretty good shape. But it wasn't the kind of revenue generating Golding for the NFL team that a lot of other cities have because. I didn't necessarily have some the luxury amenities and sweet. It also didn't allow to control the revenue on a year round basis of things like concert events that will coming in there. So this new building talking to essentially got a sweetheart deal on it, and they control all revenue now. So basically, the owner Arthur blank is making a lot more money. We're speaking with Dan Walkin sports columnist at USA today. He's written a piece entitled is the two point four billion dollars Atlanta paid for new sports stadiums. The last two years worth it. Is there a fair and accurate way to measure whether or not these venues ultimately will be worth it. I know that you can necessarily come up with a number or an analysis that would tell you exactly whether or not it's worth it. Because I think sometimes the benefit of having an event like the Super Bowl or the final four, whatever it sort of incalculable. And I know that people try to come up with economic impact studies. But I think those things are very flawed their methodology. There is I think he value to the city of Atlanta being on the minds of people not just for tourism compasses. But you know, there's a lot of media that comes in. And they go, right. Nice things about the city, and maybe that attracts business, or whatever you just don't know how that's going to impact on a on a rippling scale low over a number of years, but the people in Atlanta, the leadership has made it a priority to bring events to the city that will make Atlanta. Make Atlanta's branding is an international destination. At a very important city in the world. Very core to their strategy. So I don't know how you measure it. But I in that respect it certainly does have some value. Thanks, dan. Dan, Walkin sports columnist at USA today. Twenty minutes now in front of the hour on.

"Back in the Peter King podcast, very very happy to be joined by the Sar of the reds zone. Scott Hanson of NFL network in Scott. I was cursing you last night as we record this at your hotel in Atlanta before the Super Bowl Tuesday morning late morning and last night was media day. And every time I started to get a good line of questioning in with Wade Phillips, all of a sudden here comes the voice. I God Scott Hanson in the old Philips arena and everybody I'm straining to hear Wade Phillips. And I just said maybe we ought to next year work on the work on having the interviews in the building done at the same time where we're trying to wear TV is going on Peter. I brought that up because so many media members of the five thousand credential media members that are here in Atlanta. Probably listen to your podcast. I apologized everyone. However, it was not my call. It was not. My fault. We were supposed to be just with an earpiece like to the audience with the personal radios. They hand out one minute before we start. They tell me we're going to keep you on the speakers. Like the producers loved what I was doing. I'm like guys, the working media is here, and they don't want to hear my voice. In fact, sportscenter on ESPN ran a soundbite last night of someone asking Bella check a question, and you hear my voice, ladies and gentlemen, give it up for Tom Brady, politics, smiles that Bellichik grimace kinda rolls his eyes. So I apologize. If I. Work. It's all fine. You know, why? It's all good because I realize that it used to be, you know, this was my whatever thirty fifth Super Bowl. This is my and it used to be that the media night would be for members like me would be for member. At the time writing my story live for the Cincinnati inquirer that night, and they're very few people there who have got a right on deadline for a newspaper the next day. So the fact is times have changed. The NFL wants the show biz aspect they want entertainment tonight to cover this. They want the funny stuff. And look I'm not going to be the sixty one year old Karaj to say, this is stupid. It's the way life is. That's it's fine with me. But it's just that I really wanted to hear Wade Phillips said last night, but I couldn't. I will pass it along for next year. Peter, it's no, listen, listen. It's all good. All right. So Scott I wanted to talk to you really all season. And I saw you last night. And I said, you know, I've already got two guests this week on my podcast. But I've got about an eighteen minute place in my podcast. And I just I didn't want the season to pass without saying a couple of things. Most of my Sundays are spent in my home office on the Upper West side of Manhattan, and at twelve fifty nine I don't watch any of the pregame shows. I'm basically get up at about seven thirty. I go to soul cycle in New York. And I get back I shower, and I sit down and I start writing because I got a lot to right before the games. So and so I don't watch any of the pregame shows and at about twelve fifty nine have a little beep on my phone and twelve fifty. Nine and then I put it on channel eight thirty five of my TV I think it's Verizon files in New York channel eight thirty five. It's the red zone. The little countdown clock is going seventeen sixteen fifteen in and here you come..

"So that after we lead the city, we leave it stronger than it was before. And before was very strong as we see that we've won route metrics here for the last ten consecutive times. It's interesting you've got so many people who are going to be packed into Mercedes Benz stadium. And a large percentage of them are going to be using their mobile devices and a large percentage of those. Obviously are going to be using Verizon's network, and that's on top of everything else going around with with the media at cetera et cetera. Tell us about the challenges that poses. Yeah. So when we look at the number of customers that are going to be coming into Atlanta for the different events. So not only do you have the Super Bowl, but you have the week leading up to it. And there's many concerts, there's different venues where media is we have over Philips arena. We had media night on Monday nights. Where again, we have an Indo -thing system that we put in and then just think of the hotels, right where the NFL is staying. So we have in building systems supporting the media and the hotels as well. As where we think most of the customers will be saying for this event. So you know, as we prepare we not only look at outside and Centennial Olympic Park inside the world congress center where we have a lot of the NFL activities and then the practice facilities where both teams are staying the hotels where the team. Are staying. So you know, it's not just the stadium. It's everywhere. We think the crowds will be in the restaurants at the different events, the different concerts. The pop concerts that come about. So we really have to prepare the coal city both outside an indoor as we think of the number of people that will be coming to these events. I can't even venture to guess how many selfish are going to be taken. How much video is going to be streamed? Yeah. And and that's the thing that's different about a Super Bowl versus a normal game. So if you think about a normal game, we don't have we have much more people downloading at a Super Bowl. You have a lot more uploads. You have people who want to show where they are who wanna show the kickoff who want to take pictures and post them. So it's really very interesting as we see the differences between the Super Bowl game and a normal game that we we see. Throughout the year. Can you quantify the investment? Verizon's making down there for this. Yes. So we've invested around ninety seven million in the last two years to support this, and it, you know, it's really a two year project as you think about the amount of fiber. We need to put in the ground to be able to support the solutions that were putting up on the the polls, you know, if you think about small south solutions in and around the park around the stadium out in the airport. You know, we've done a really good job getting access on the tarmac, which traditionally has been a very difficult place for providers to provide service, but we wanna make sure that when you come into the city as soon as you LAN, you have great service since the work starts so far ahead of time. Your folks already busy down in Florida where the next two Super Bowls are going to be played right? Yes. So I- since I have the east. This is my. I do per bowl. I was out in Minnesota last year with my colleague from the west to had the previous Super Bowls. And so I have this years and then I get to finish on Monday..

You could get to most of the stadium. It was cool. I would love to go watch baseball game there, but I was concert. It's it's a really it's a small stadium. Yes, really small and not only that the seats are really small because you know, this is all uncomfortable turn of the century. When the average American was the size of Alex Williams, we've got twenty five pounds bigger now. Seats are so narrow awful. Yeah. I noticed that Philips arena will marina. They've they've changed the seats. And I think they're smaller. Maybe I just have gained weight. But the seat house seem tighter than it was and they might have done that to get some more seats in.
