"Thou City Hall and by the Deva Mayor has denied sometimes that he's the father of the death squad. Sometimes he jokes that he's with a death squad but it's generally believed in Davos interested a country that he had something to do the death-squad he's just kills the criminals. He kills criminals. Yes I killed about three of them because they were really know how how many bullets from a gun went throw inside. They're buddies but it it had been an essay or not lie about it into win exactly does he become. President Twenty sixteen esteemed exactly thirty years after the fall of Marcus at a time when Filipinos were getting tired of democratic politics the Philippines Philippines woke up to a vastly different political landscape this morning after the all but certain victory of a brash outspoken mayor in the presidential election politics was corrupt the same families that had ruled the country for many years where remained in power and in fact more deeply entrenched in power and so the country was very for a populist disruption. Mr Turtle was viewed as a wildcard candidate who would best bring some color into into the poll but his pledge to kill criminals and to end crime and corruption had nationwide appeal or I will kill you in New York's. He sort of ran or other insurgent campaign. He didn't have much money at this Dr. He hit a sort of dark charisma. He cursed a lot. He he threatened a lot. He's language was often violent and crass and that resonated among a lot of Filipinos because he seemed seemed authentic and he exuded sort of hyper masculine authority a little bit like Ladimir Putin. You would be photographed craft in his check shirts in aviator sunglasses. He had photos of himself. You know slinging guns he would be in target practice and and he would tell stories about shooting people including how he shot a classmate during his senior year of law school because that classmate made fun of his his provincial accent. Yikes yes and he started that story with. I am used to shooting people and you can consider that as a joke or or a fact or a threat but it was very effective. What does he done as president other than have this drug war. He don't his main constituency instituion. See are the aspiring middle class in the Philippines. These are the families of overseas workers call center workers who worked late at night and so also worry about their safety and they aspire to a better life and so do dare has appealed to them because he talks about things that they like. You know saved you. In the streets traffic better urban amenities and detainees mayor. That's the stuffy nose and so he says I will fix the traffic. I will make you safer on the streets. I will give you better quality of life like you know he's given free. Wifi in public places places his given Free College Education in State funded schools and colleges and universities so that has played well now how popular izzy eighty percent popularity according to the latest survey more talk about his brash attitude is smashed. Glenn Persona and it's easy to compare him to people like trump or Putin but you talk about free college and Free Wifi Eddie sounds sounds like a different kind of guy. Is he a populist leader who actually delivers I mean he hasn't delivered all of his promises but his delivered some it was the same thing that headed in Davao. You know he cleaned up the streets. He provided infrastructure. He did very successful nine one one emergency Z. Line thing he even provided shelters for abused women. I would say he snack withholding paycheck like I will take care of you if you obey the rules if you don't smoke in public if you obey the traffic lights if you behave or if you don't follow is rules what if you speak up well the count is that one thousand four hundred petty criminals. Workload Endeavour during his mayoralty the military certainly has gone after communists who now become critical of his this rule number of human rights lawyers priests have been gunned down by masked assailants so it's not clear killed them but it's clear that they we did speak out against the president and Filipino stole like him. You have to understand how broken the country has become even policemen. He's been field is they say that we jail a drug dealer. The drug dealer calls up his politician friends and then have to set him free. Something drastic has to be done on and that is a popular perception people feel that extreme measures you know they support the kind of bridge alanna justice that dirty represents because has the justice system is so broken so we should also understand did from the other point of view is that this is a broken society society and there is this man who says I will take care of it and it will. This is the price that we will have to pay and people think well. Let's give it a try. Try and see whether it works and the eighty percent of Filipinos who support detailed to do they know about all these killings today himself off has said that when he becomes president the fish in Manila Bay will grow fat with the carcass of criminals so they know for us as long as the drug pushers interstates in my country photo as long as the doors this camping scene on the unto all of them are killing photographs of the dead are on the news there've been accounts there but most billy bean us. Would I think rather look away just as they she did. Individual it would be better guild drug suspects or bracing story generally involved with drugs rather than seeing civilians. Our innocent eat fall. I'm getting guilt. He's part of a global populist moment. I must say in in the Philippines. There is an uttering or demonizing of drug drug dealers in other countries. It's migrants whether they're legal or not and people have looked away just if they have done here when migrant children are separated from their parents they put their hands to their ears so that they will not have to listen to the cries of the children children that have lost their parents because of this immigration policy so we've seen it elsewhere do you. I think he's changing. The Philippines are changing the nature of Filipino democracy. I'm worried about institutions such as the police where where abuses of the kind that we've seen in the drug war have become routine and go unpunished. I'm worried about his hold on on the justice system. He will have the majority in the Supreme Court. I'm worried about Congress whose independence has really been damaged. There is no the election in the Philippines. He will be out of office in three years so it's really more the integrity and further deterioration of our institutions institutions. I'm worried about. I don't know how permanent whether this kind of vigilantism will survive in the long run. I hope we will learn our lesson from this and part of the reason why we are documenting. All of these killings is to say you know. The safety has caused three surprise. We have to come to terms with this. We cannot just bury all of these deaths and forget about them. At some point we would have to account for them in a knowledge them and I think that time will come and Sheila Coronel Coronell teaches at Columbia School of journalism. Even though I was young he gave me the you know the backstage stage of things where this is how you talk to people you make them feel important and then also really understand what they need so that they're not walking out of here too just like yeah. I got their money but it's really something that you create a relationship with the speedboat knowing that you really hone in so you know. I guess you know I'm applying all of those back then. It didn't mean much but yeah but you're getting the CFPB plant a seed. Yes exactly all right. The Dow was talk big inspiration at the gas unless you know he was a comedian so when we go to a public restaurants and whatnot everybody said hello to him and I thought that was the normal. "Warnings delivered by emergency teams continue to party, though, some kind of hippie peace and free, love party. You know, throw that, you know, like, yeah, we, we, we this storm is not going to touch us. We're just smoke. Some weed, listen to the doors bridge gonna let us Mary, Jane. You know, just fucking chill man. It'll be cool. Well there, there are misplaced confidence proved to be tragically misplaced when a twenty four foot waves slammed into the apartment building. They were in destroyed the building subject to the partygoers to gale force winds, violent ocean, surges and nearly all of them died. The lesson here is, of course, don't listen to the doors, there's lot, there's a lot better bands when late sixties. Now's move on to crime. Sometimes crime pace. Other times it kills we're going to focus on that. Kind of, we're starting to Philippines Philippines are a little easier to laugh at because they are trying to do something criminal, the first criminal one, his Darwin award, a may twenty fifth two thousand when he tried to pull a db pooper-scooper men name Augusta board of the Philippine air flight to Manila. Donna ski mask and swim goggles. Pulled out a gun and a grenade announce he was hijacking the plane. He demanded the plane return to devise a DeVos city, but the pilots convince into the aircraft was low on fuel. They continued on toward Manila Manila, Agusto undaunted, rob. The passengers of about twenty five thousand dollars or the pilots, lower the plane to sixty five hundred feet. The straps on a homemade parachute and forced to flight attendants to open the doors and depressurize the plane. And then he you know, I'm sure it was intending to jump, but the wind was so strong that he had trouble getting out of the plane. Finally, one of the flight attendants helpfully pushed him out the door, just as that son of a bitch tried to throw the fucking grenade back behind him blow up the plane pulled out the pin in a best case scenario situation followed grenade did not go off anywhere near the plane. And of course, his homemade parachute, did not open, which I knew was going to happen when I read homemade parachute, a homemade parachute is the best of parachute. Not open. He fell to the earth and died. Yeah. Just fucking very dumb plan if you can try jump out of a plane, maybe by parachute from a place that's gonna make him parachutes now, we had to Russia. What's his bid deal this in Russia? Like so the pop with America. No one care, drink it or something, listen, something like that. She could deal with the wrassling that analogy late one Russian night. In two thousand seven a comrade named Edward entered the apartment of a thirty year old handicapped man who slept peacefully Edward proceeded to rob Edwards prepared to leave when suddenly the man woke up in the and then the guy said I couldn't believe my eyes, the dog shape of some goon was standing next to nightstand. Thank god. I live on first Lord. He did not die from fall. I didn't understand it. I had fallen out of his pants when I looked closer. I realized that it was testicle a man's testicle. I put it in cold water and rushed to phone, then handicapped, man Dowd emergency services several times, but the doctors kept hanging up on him when he would tell them that he ripped a burglar's balls off half an hour later. "Really? We're going to dive into this whole traffic jam on Mount Everest thing in a while because that's this is crazy. People are dying because you can't get up and down fast. Enough are you saying they need to have a DUI checkpoints up there to know the HOV lanes. I don't know what I mean. This is this is nuts. Why don't. At this stage of the game wise, anybody even climbing Everest like people done it. I would be more interested in diving like the Mariana trench. But, but not, not, not in the submersible like actually just going thirty eight thousand feet down. Just timing to a strong drop. It goes. I- gyms in alcohol. Jim. Are you attempting to participate in the five and five or do you have to take on something else? I want to participate and fight. Give me a question. I okay, you ready? Okay. Here's your question. This is a good question for you. The Philippines, you know about this do Tate ordered the garbage sent back to Canada. Remember the Canadians sent the garbage. Closely. Okay, good. Good. This is perfect. So they're sending it back. They're sending it back to, to, to Canada. If this thing escalates who are you rooting for in a fight the Philippines or Canada? Well, obviously a Canadians are the closest thing to a democratic power to work. They all garden. We can know in no way, shape or form, terrier or dictator. Can we be perceived as helping or supporting any totalitarian rule unless they have a lot of oil, hold on to interrupt you there because hold on a second? Hold on technically do territories, the aggrieved party, because he's minding his business, the Canadians, get all culturally imperialistic and ship their garbage to the Philippines. Philippines needs their garbage, you know. So technically the Philippines of the aggrieved party here, you know, I kinda I'm thinking, I'm with the Philippines on this one. Yeah. But I mean the way he handled it the way he's reaction here. Are you anywhere he handled it isn't isn't quite as diplomatic as the Canadian the Canadian democracy? Maybe. So if the Philippines Philippines did like air strikes on Vancouver. Would you want the US to get involved and protect the Canadians? The US would be involved. You know, why NATO all of our movies are still Donald? That's very good. A very good point. So that's a very he raises. A very good point. I was watching tool. See gathered last night, talking to Tucker Carlson on the Tucker Carlson show on the Fox News channel, and she made an incredibly compelling case against going to war with Iran. She says, we cannot go to war with Iran. There's there's, there's nothing but downside on this thing, and I, I'm thinking, I'm in the Gabbard camp on this thing, which freaks me out because she's like super progressive liberal, but I do I don't wanna see short of a compelling piece of evidence and by that, I mean Al Qaeda's gonna strike us. Isis is getting ready to hit as we gotta hit something like that. I, I am not in the mood to just go traipsing into a war in Iran. When, when they haven't shot at us, we haven't really shot at them, they're getting cute in the straits of Hormuz. But all we gotta do sink a couple of there fast boats, like Reagan did once upon a time and just move on with it. I don't know that I want to go to war with Iraq. In fact, I know I don't want to go to war with the Iranians actually know giving me a bad, we're person, I'd rather go to any soft on terrorism. I'd rather go to war with cork. Get outta here. The Brentwood arrive you if you if you wanna make the case to go to war with Iran or not. I want to hear from you and I kind of think till she got going on. "It's gone. You want to add that second show. It was like, yeah, let's go that's sold out like less than a minute again. Right. And then the ask for third show. And I was like all right. Let's third show that shut the computer down like we broke the whole website down. So now people are running to the venue to buy tickets. Now, you see this line for me out front and their post people post, and then we added a fort show. And then the computers were still down. People were lining up that we added a fifth at it. A six out of the seventh at an eighth then the news started doing coverage about it. Like the news was like a comedian Joe coys breaking a record under computers down right now. They were doing like these special reports last comic the last person ever sell. This many tickets was a journey, and that was a nineteen map, blah, blah, blah. Yeah. It was crazy. And then by the time that came out that show already sold out. So then I added a ninth, and then added a tenth eleventh and ended up breaking Mariah Carey's record. Wow. She had twenty one thousand tickets sold sold twenty three thousand tickets. Could've went longer is just that. I already made prior commitments in the Philippines Philippines. But man, we still want to cancel. 'cause I we it like I think we're gonna hit like thirty thousand forty thousand tickets. And then now Mariah Carey is going to keep going back. She's going to have to retype it again. I know what's crazy is. I every show that I did even though I never had a deal with Netflix. I just kept telling every show at the I love you who I I swear to God, I was shoot. My my Netflix special here. I said that. But yet I didn't have a deal at Netflix. I was lying. I did have one tell you make it. Yeah. I had the first special which but this one I don't even have a second special coming out. And I was lying. I'm coming here. And I'm shooting that plays here. The crow. I put I had it all video on tape. And then and then when I landed we got this deal with Netflix. I played that I put it on Instagram that audio, but it was so funny because we put the show on sale before I even had the deal. But I didn't even tell anyone that it was network that it was Tapie. I didn't tell it was the taping. Yeah. It was it an arena. So now went for the theater to an arena. So the arena went on sale. And that sold out. We added a second arena and that sold out minutes with third force. And now we have four Rina's, and I broke my record again. So it's like thirty two thousand congratulations. That's did you ever think you'd be journeys comedian equivalent in Hawaii crazy. That's awesome. They've always said that that's a hard market. You know what I mean? They've always said that that's a hard market, and I get it. Because like I said that was my toughest market for the special. I was good for maybe nine hundred tickets. And then that's like a break. Even thing. We're not taking home anything because it costs more money the rent. You know what I mean? So yeah. So what do you extra special knowing that those people are coming out? And supporting what do you attribute to your success in Hawaii just shutting out Hawaiian shows? Do I I don't know what I think they just grabbed a hold of that special that special they embrace it, you know, one of the nicest things they said to be is this one security guard that did the whole run. Those those eleven shows. He hugged me. And he goes your hours. Sort of cried. Was your ours bra? We got you bra. We carry on our back. Brought a UK we found the bra we love that was crazy start crying. Thanks. You said after that to some your shows you had to go to the Philippians two shows. Yeah, you're Filipino. How to do that your first time doing comedy there? I went there with Russell Peters as an opener, and that was my first ever the Philippines doing stand up. And and it was fun. That was a bad time because..

"You can look at what happened in the Paracel in nineteen seventy four the Paracel islands. Nineteen seventy four we had pretty much left. The South Vietnamese on their round the Chinese son opening and moved into the Paracel islands and actually fought a battle with the South Vietnamese take over the Paracel islands, and they did and the North Vietnamese sort of grudgingly acquiesced, but they never renounced their claim to the Paracel islands now the Chinese occupied. But what the Chinese did was? They were thinking many decades ahead and what they perceived wise a vacuum of power. The US was withdrawing nobody was backing up the Vietnamese at that point. So the Chinese moved down. Okay. The next step is the Philippines Philippines. Ask us to leave. Subic back. The philippines. Ask us to to leave the area, and let them defend themselves. Okay. Great. But they don't build up their own forces, and therefore the Chinese feel free to move into this. Spratly islands. There's a power vacuum. Again. The Chinese are thinking way ahead and the way we deter that is to build up our lions structure, again, we build up our allies. We make them more powerful. We show firmness. We engage with our allies. We build up our readiness. I think you are brilliant. David. I really do. I mean, you should be part of our foreign policy somewhere some administration should gobble you up. Well, now, I'm going to say something it probably some of your listeners are not gonna like. I think we should ratify the UN convention on the law of the sea. And I think a lot of your listeners are going to say it says UN in front of it. Therefore, we shouldn't be part of it. Well, the problem is that the convention on the law to see is what we are relying on the tell China they have no claim to these islands. And it's difficult for us to say, you guys are not complying with the law to see when we haven't signed the law to see right? We need to sign that. Because if we are going to enforce the law, we need to be party to the law. So I can understand their reluctance to sign some UN agreements. But I think this one would be in our interest. That's a good point. Where do you get the book tipping point tipping point is available, but any bookstore any online bookseller? It's an e book, it's a hard cover book. And it sounds like you really took some time putting this together. When can we expect the next one it takes me year to write these? So the next one will be called onslaught and it will be out next December. All right, stay with us. We're gonna come back in a moment. David. And take final phone calls here for you. As we talk about the novel, folks, tipping point, the war with China the first solve ole. And those of you who have been on hold the just hang there.
