"3 36 Philip Morris, the maker of Marlborough is buying up drug delivery companies, some of which make treatments for smoking related ailments. Why, well, Todd Frankel has taken a closer look for the Washington Post and spoke with the most Taylor inside. It's easy to see why folks are uneasy about Philip Morris buying these companies. What's the end goal for this? The Titan of tobacco. Yes. Phil Morris, uh, knows that smoking rates are on the decline worldwide. And, you know, they made their money. Stolen cigarettes in that business is going away. And so they've transitioned slow, I think must have seen them transition towards vaping or E cigarettes. But they realized that even that is not a future that also stand them for very long. And so they're looking to go what they call to a nicotine free initiatives that will be part of their smoke free future, And that includes buying up companies that have raised some eyebrows. Yeah, this is sort of the definition of conflict of interest. How quickly is Philip Morris hoping to turn a profit from this sort of Beyond nicotine business model for their goal, they say, is to earn $1 billion in revenue by 2025, which is would be a very small Piece of their overall revenue They make about $28 billion a year. But you know, they been criticizing her by these companies. As you point out that they, um one company back. Tura is based in Britain makes the COPD uh Medicine, inhaler and also asthma inhaler, and both of those things are made worse are caused by smoking. They are also trying to buy a company that makes an inhalable form of aspirin to that would be used to treat heart attacks. Another side effects of smoking. And they say that they're not trying to actually, you know, get the user on both ends. You know when they buy the cigarettes and then get sick from the cigarette They say that they're trying to look for like synergies in what their expertise is which is like injecting and inhaling different medicines. Whether it's nicotine or something helpful, like COPD medicine. I don't know that I would buy that if I were a shareholder, though. I mean, is there a sense that That may be shareholders will say no, we aren't going to sell our company to Philip Morris that they've had a lot of pushback, you know, so bacteria license based in Britain and British regulators are looking at that. And Philip Morrison bid for the company came out of the blue. Actually, they will be bought by a private equity firm, and they did. Their offer was so much higher than Victoria shareholders say, You know, how can we turn this down? And they Any received assurances from the company that they won't interfere with what they're doing and won't be tainted by their ties to big tobacco. Any other cigarette companies ditching tobacco in the same way, or is Philip Morris kind of the the only one right now? They're the only ones you know The other companies Altria, Uh, you know British tobacco companies Japan Tobacco company They All have moved towards the Vaping or, you know, e cigarette movement. Everyone I think sees that cigarettes. You know, the burning of tobacco is on its way out, but no one has been as aggressive and it's you know, sort of pushing the envelope here like Philip Morris International's doing. "From wondering. I'm david brown and this business wars daily on this monday august second. Happy star of the work week everyone well. Let's get right to it last week. Philip morris international said it wants the uk to ban the sale of cigarettes by the year. Twenty thirty notable. Because philip morris produces around seven hundred billion cigarettes a year and has made billions of dollars. Doing so here's the thing though. It's not the nineteen fifties anymore. Cigarettes aren't exactly having a heyday. What with their very public negative effects on health. Some major investors have removed tobacco companies from their portfolios more and more financial institutions around. The world have vowed to implement tobacco-free policies according to cnn and fewer and fewer people are taking puffs these days. That's true in the uk and the us so from a business standpoint. Philip morris's ceo telling the sunday telegraph that cigarettes in the country should go the way of gasoline powered. Cars that is banned by twenty. Thirty makes a bit of sense but still accompany telling a country to just discontinued the sale of their most profitable item. A little strange. That is until you think. About what else. Philip morris is peddling a transformation at least that's what they call it. The company has invested eight billion dollars in so-called smoke free products like e cigarettes and it's iq os three device that heats tobacco rather than burns. It was just approved for sale in the us. Last december in their own words quote. There are an estimated one billion plus smokers in the world and they should be encouraged to quit but for those adult smokers who would otherwise continue smoking. we want to provide them with smoke. Free alternatives and quote. So it would seem that. Philip morris's commitment to divest from cigarettes isn't entirely about public health. They just hope folks will forgo the butts for one of their other nicotine-laden devices. Philip morris's so-called transformation has its fair share of critics like the ceo of a uk public health charity. Deborah are not in a statement she said sure phillip morris has said. It wants to see the end of smoking for years now but quoting here. How can such claims be taken seriously from a company which sells more than one in ten cigarette smoke worldwide and quote fair point because they're so deeply entrenched into global smoking culture. It seems like philip. Morris may need nothing short of a pr miracle to get their point across pr miracle that something rivaled cigarette maker british american tobacco knows a thing or two about bat's the maker of newport cigarettes which as you may know have been the target of proposed government legislation for several years. Now in the us newports or america's number one selling menthol cigarette which the biden administration has said it will seek to ban. Menthol cigarettes are disproportionately pedal to young black smokers. According to industry research but any proposed ban could take years to go into effect. That's because big tobacco will almost certainly have something to say about the ban in the way of litigation in the meantime. Bat is going the way of philip morris in an attempt to undergo their own transformation in the words of an official statement from bat. They recognize the world is changing and are committed to providing adult consumers with a wide range of enjoyable and less risky products again. The words of the company those would be of course the company's vapor products tobacco heating products and tobacco free nicotine patches see maybe cigarette giants. Ken pivot at least. That's the plan for now. Philip morris and bat must be hoping that their past allegiances to cigarettes. Go up in smoke from wondering this business words. "The world is actually all about vapor and we jumped in snack style. We noticed that Phil morris wants more than fifty percent of the revenues to be smoke free by twenty twenty-five smoke-free revenues is referring to i coast which is their smokefree tobacco. Product that philip morris zones all the jack this like vaping but it heats actual tobacco leaves instead of some kind of silky oil. That smells like manga. The silky oil mango thing. That's vaping right. Which philip morris also just launched a vape by the way. Yeah so they own. Both i coast which is heated tobacco and your conventional jewel style vaping products. But here's the thing. E cigarettes vapes. He tobacco they all get the same addictive nicotine to satisfy existing smokers so the pivot seems to be. We're not gonna make money on smoking cigarettes and not know but we are going to make money when cigarette smokers switch to some other tobacco products. Exactly interestingly jacket. i noticed they've made some interesting acquisitions. Yes philip morris. International acquired the company behind nicorette gum. Which helps you quit. And they acquired an inhaler company so this is like pepsi buying weight watchers right. Philip morris isn't gonna make money on smoking anymore but they will make money when you try to quit smoking and jack. Because they own an inhaler to philip morris canal. Also make money as you suffer from smoking. So what's the takeaway for our buddies. Creatively over at philip morris. Can we not call buddies. Vaping saved tobacco snacker. Cigarette sales actually peaked in the united states. Back in nineteen eighty-one before us. Yes and there's been a forty year decline since then. Cigarette sales today are one third of what they were in. Nineteen eighty one in the us. You actually garage sales. They were on their way out. Philip morris equipment out a business and then they were rescued by vaping in these heated tobacco products. Same nicotine same addiction. Same stunting brain development the long term impact of vaping and heated tobacco and lungs still. Tvd we need time to figure that out the messed up thing. Vaping doesn't have the baggage of cigarettes and that's why it's growing vaping is. Cigarettes is less dirty less smelly but still unhealthy reincarnation. And that could be why phil morris is so excited to sink it cigarettes but embrace the vape vaping saved tobacco for our third and final story fancy legend. It's typically the slowest three months of sales of the year every year to cookies down in cobb. He's got his ten can't blame but it's two thousand seven all over again. Yeah people are buying iphones. Like it's like the new beanie babies acres get this iphone revenue. Last quarter jumped by fifty percent to forty billion dollars. Forty billion dollars an iphone sales in three months. Jack we have got to sprinkle a little context on this puppy. This is an unprecedented profit. Puppy because iphone the one product generates more sales than cost cuss. Sit down stand up and sit back down against you. Forget ipad apple watch matt computers and all those services iphone alone would be number twelve in the list of highest revenues of any company. It's like one. Lebron scores more points than the entire. Utah jazz now. The thing that shocked us was. It wasn't just iphone upgraders. Tim cook bragged this quarter about android switchers interesting difference because typically apples trying to make the iphone so unreal they you upgrade from version eleven diversion twelve. Because it's marginally better that a sixteen chip is so much better than a fifteen. Oh comes in purple now. I may as well spend two thousand bucks and apple wants that because the more frequently you upgrade your iphone. The more apple makes profits. Now it's one thing to upgrade a someone who is a member of club apple. It's a lot harder to convert an android. Yes remember soccer's eighty percent of the world in fifty percent of americans have android powered phones google's operating system and applicant. Just go door to door pitching you on this new iphone like at some kind of new religion now but this past quarter and yesterday. Tim cook brag for the first time in years about getting both switchers from android to apple as well as upgraders last quarter big deal. Iphones is basically like the lassie. A- profit puppies jack. I love last the golden retriever with the royal pedigree and a trained itself. So jack what's the takeaway for our buddies over an apple. Big tech has flipped the growth curve staggers typically as companies mature their growth slows natural. It's easier to double your sales when your sales are small in the first place then to double them when your sales are huge. Okay so jack. That was the norm but yesterday we had app we had google. We microsoft do the opposite. Three of america's trillion dollar companies just announced earnings yesterday and they announced the fastest growth in years. Jack apple crude. It's fastest pace. Since two thousand eleven microsoft had its best quarter since two thousand fourteen go had its best quarter announced yesterday since twenty thirteen. I guess what we expect. Similar fastest growth in years from facebook and amazon as they announced this week after phenomenal in two thousand twenty tech giants are somehow growing faster and twenty twenty one for our second story philip. They came out with a whole new campaign. Jack you share the name. Un smoke the world now. The red hot chili peppers. And then last week. Philip morris asked the government and the united kingdom. This is wild to ban the sale of cigarettes mc soon. Yeah their core product they said. Don't let us sell any more of what we sell now. Naturally nikolai thinking philip. "I'm excited to talk to you. Because we're going to a place where people are trying to lose the quarantine fifteen kind of eating. Whatever over the lockdown months and people's relationship with food right now is probably at a very pivotal moment. So one thing as someone who like. I've struggled both with weight. Probably most of my life and my relationship with food and i also struggled with the idea of food addiction as it feels impossible to be addicted to something that your body needs and you talk about this in your book hook. Yes so being addicted to food was a really good thing for most of our existence or forebears putting on body. Fat was a really good thing because in enabled our brains to grow and able to speak with your hard times and have more offspring which is kind of what life is all about right but the problem is the nature of our food was changed so dramatically by the food companies in the last fifty years. That suddenly what was really good for us became really problematic. How would you define addiction. And why food can be addictive despite us having to eat to live. I spent time with evolutionary biologists for this book because it was really kind of trying to figure out is is addiction. Really kind of the right word. And is it really fair to compare you. Twinkies and oreo cookies was cigarettes and alcohol and even some drugs and so spending time though with these biologists i came full circle. And now i'm convinced at anyway. Food products are even more problematic. There is some precedents to the food. Industry called the tobacco industry for decades. It vehemently denied that smoking was addictive. Writer put all scientists who work on added. It's it's it's lobbyists and it stops your officials in its cetera. Well in two thousand something really fascinating happened. Which is at philip. Morris completely flipped around and said okay. You've got us. Smoking is in fact addictive with throwing in the towel on that. What was so interesting about the for me. Is that philip. Morris at the time was also the single largest manufacturer of processed food through its purchase of the old company general foods and then craft and then nabisco which made oreo cookies and that's same year. The ceo of the company was asked to define addiction in some legal proceedings. His well

Tobacco sales during lockdown

"During lockdown We sorta changed or spend money always being by mobike. Be buying jigsaw. Buying craft kits. Thinks like that and by motorola does seem that. We've been on mass buying more tobacco. If you look at the results from philip morris japan tobacco imperial brands altria group all of which have reported in the last month. They've essentially said our industry. Globally is doing far better than expected. Now of course long-term tobacco is a declining industry but it seems that the stress the anxiety. The bordon maybe even the freedom of being locked into your home has cool. Smokers either to restart smoking or to smoke more because the outlook for the industry the sales and revenue and profits. They've been reporting it being better than expected now. This is a slightly new story. Because else countries such as south africa where sales were banned entirely because of course covert isn't a disease that attacks the lungs and the chest and so smoking makes it far worse. There's also issues about some some places. Sales of tobacco products were considered essential. And therefore you could still buy them in. The shops and other countries cells of tobacco wouldn't considered non essential. And you couldn't buy them in. The shops followed by the way considered tobacco and essential purchase. So there's some confusion there's also been a pantry loading stopped loading what we saw toilet roll but also say we nuances this story again. Because of high taxes and high prices for tobacco most western countries smuggling tobacco is a massive issue. And of course what we know. We know the borders closed so again. The closure of the borders stopped a lot of that tobacco smuggling which again boosted big tobacco prophets. So so this is a really new story that straightway you'd think well covert attacks suggest attacks. The lungs people would stop smoking. Actually that's not been the case and actually people have drunk more wind. We've seen that in the uk people returning to alcohol to relieve their anxiety. It seems people have been turning to tobacco as well now. That story misses out. I think quite a key point and this is something. I'm noticing around the media. Nobody wants to report this. But if you refer to the british medical journal don't have the exact figures in front of me but it's something like this. Twenty percent of the british population smoke deaths from covid. Anchors is not point four one percent it would appear that there's something in nicotine That actually prevents prevents the virus entering the lungs. I know they should. Nobody wants to talk about. This correlation is not causality. okay speakers two things correllated does not mean one causes the other they have given you a financial answer georgie. You'd expect nothing else of me. Yeah well

The Marlboro Woman

"Before the Marlboro Man. Before the Marlboro woman. Even women didn't really smoke. In fact in some places. It was even illegal to help me tell that story. I wrote Aria Bendix into the studio with me. I'm already so on. It gets toasted here as well too. So cool cool. So why don't we start? Warriors a reporter at business insider. Who's covered the history of smoking and Marlborough? Why don't we start at the turn of the century? What was the association between women and smoking so there was a strong negative association between women and smoking. It was not something that polite woman did. There was a lot of societal disapproval. That was definitely the big thing but there was also a few legal attempts to sort of prohibit women from smoking in public in nineteen. Oh four there was a woman who was actually turned in by her husband for smoking in the presence of her children and she faced thirty days of jail. Time for that and then a few years later There's actually a short-lived ban in New York City that prohibited women from smoking in public. So it really was. Smoking was really seen as not a thing. That a lady. Oh well raised woman would do woman of good moral standing. So then what changed? So what changed was World War One inside the White House. President Woodrow Wilson compared with advisors then signed the proclamation of war against Germany and that was really when women started to take on up. Actually enter the workforce for the first time and take on jobs that were traditionally says he'd with men behind every man or the woman at American women were daintily mightily and they also changed their appearance to reflect that so women started to have shorter hair started to wear pants and then they also started to pick up cigarettes by one thousand. Nine hundred thousand American women had won the right to vote but even within the Feminist Movement for some smoking was taboo. Some of the activists for women's rights actually went to great lengths to distance themselves from women who smoked Lucy. Page Gaston for example was a vocal opponent of smoking and drinking alcohol. She wasn't trying to ally herself with women who were redefining femininity. Instead she wanted to empower women who embodied the old Victorian ideals of womanhood who would use their vote to advocate for temperance and respectability and enforce their high moral standards on the broader population. So where does the story of Marlboro Start? So it starts with Philip Morris which used to be British Tobacco Company in the One thousand nine hundred twenty s they really wanted to get a stronger foothold in the US market so they came up with the idea of the Marlboro Brand and in nineteen twenty four. The introduced it as a cigarette brand for women. Nineteen twenty four was a really tough time for a newcomer to be making a play for the US cigarette market at all. Never Mind Marketing to women. That's because it was already pretty locked down by four big tobacco companies. Actually there used to be one gigantic company a monopoly until the US Supreme Court and a bunch of trust. Busting Congressman. Put a stop to that in the nineteen teens. Anyway by the Nineteen Twenties Marlboro. Was this small fish making its debut and upon full of. I'm just GONNA go with this great white sharks so it set its sights on the other. Small fish in the cigarette pond women and since suffragettes Lucy Page Gaston. Were not going to light up anytime soon. Marlboro had to find a way to make smoking socially acceptable for women. It had to make cigarettes. Which many saw as symbols of vulgarity and promiscuity actually feminine by Victorian Standards So one of the first advertisements that they came out with was this quote unquote mild as May campaign may like the month of May delicate breezy dainty elegant for find polite. And there's something amazing about how Marlboro. Sins that message through these ads. Like if you look at them. The women picture aren't even smoking but it almost doesn't because they look so glamorous every one of them sort of had like this dark lib this perfectly quaffed hair. The secret was sort of daintily hanging off their fingertips looking a little bit seductive but it was also somewhat reminiscent of the Victorian ideals of Amenity. That sort of caring us into the nineteen twenties. You see this sort of stereotype of a lady. A very elegant woman that marble woman is basically like the Modern Day Portland of instagram influence. Our I mean everything that women sort of wanted and aspire to be mild is may was everything. A woman could want in a cigarette. The ads made it look like an essential accessory as natural a woman's hand as the lipstick on her lips. There was a lot of concern that women's lipstick would actually get at the end of their cigarette. So what they did was actually create a grease proof tip that would prevent that and it would keep your lipstick looking nice while you were smoking after that. They also introduced a red rim around the cigarette and that was meant to disguise the lipstick itself. We are miles away from the Marlboro Man. Here that even his Marlboro and its parent company. Philip Morris continued to work on making it cigarette look appealing to women. It had a bigger obstacle to tackle. Most women did not know how to smoke. So Philip Morris sponsored. A lecture series that toured the country and taught women the basics. It hit ladies clubs charm. School's department stores and nurses lounges covering etiquette had opened the packages avoid lipstick smears and prevent fires. Oh my God and slowly but surely marbles efforts started to make inroads so the advertisements are resonating with women Marlboros. Getting letters from women thanking them for the ADS. More women are starting to pick up smoking. But it's actually not doing much for the brand itself. It was pretty much failing as a business they were capturing a miniscule portion of the cigarette market at that time turns out. Marlboro. Wasn't the only cigarette company on the block with the bright idea of advertising to women in fact the American Tobacco Company one of the four giants which used to have a monopoly on cigarettes. It wanted to get women to smoke. Just as badly as Marlboro did and its main brand. Lucky strike was a much bigger name than Marlboro. The president of the American Tobacco Company poured about one point five billion dollars in today's dollars into advertisements in the first decade of the lucky advertisements. So they were funneling money into the brand and that sort of reflected in that sales they were sort of catering to everyone and they saw the same opportunity. Marble did that. They weren't actually targeted advertisements to half of the population which was women so they put out a lot of the same messaging. That Marlboro did a lot of that. Same like feminine ideals of Beauty. They weren't a woman's cigarette brand but they certainly began catering their advertisements to women but nineteen twenty nine both companies had been running ads featuring women for years. Marlboro had even gone so far as to show a woman in one of the advertisements. Actually smoking a cigarette. Just holding it seductively. But even that wasn't enough so to break through the negative by surrounding women in cigarettes once and for all the American Tobacco Company launched another offensive. And this one would below the politics of women's smoking wide. Open the president of the American Tobacco Company calls up this Guy Edward Brenes and he's now known as the father of Public Relations and he was actually fun fact. The nephew Sigmund Freud and so- Bernez comes up with this idea to stage a protest in New York City he recruits all. These debutantes who sort of look like the everyday woman but they're also super elegant and he gets them to basically marched through the streets of New York on the Easter Day parade carrying lit cigarettes in their hand and he called the the torches of freedom so cigarettes were known as the torches of freedom the Easter parade. One of the most important events on New York City's social calendar. Women were there to be seen. They were the newest fashions. Their boldest hats and stranded down Fifth Avenue. Like it was a runway. It was such a cultural touchstone. The American composer Irving Berlin even wrote a song about it and it became the basis for a nineteen thirty three. Judy Garland Fred astaire movie new the grandest Bala Anyway crashing. This event was a big deal and the torches of freedom the woman marching down Fifth Avenue in their finery carrying lit cigarettes. That image caught fire. It was a huge news story and it sort of kicked off the idea of women smoking in public really. Yeah I mean I see it as sort of the fulcrum to change the social tied women in other cities as well not just New York City but now San Francisco and Detroit. Were now taking the streets and smoking their cigarettes or torches a free. They had their own torches. Afraid of

Verizon Q2 profit beats estimates, boosted by wireless growth

"Well let's get into these earnings reports I'm gonna call the number one earnings report of today at least from a large population large cap heavily owns stock point of view Verizon a member of the Dow reported earnings they're headquartered in New York I don't own Verizon a lot of people own Verizon for its dividend yield the four point three percent but my problem is there's not any growth in earnings anymore very sluggish over the last five years not as bad as a of Philip Morris or a of B. P. but Verizon has been averaging seven percent growth over the last five years and going forward Verizon is only expecting to grow by a four point three percent I like companies that are growing their earnings along with their dividend if I'm going to buy a dividend payer and if you look at Verizon it has been a pretty poor performer you go over the last five years which has been a pretty good five year stretch of time for the stock market Verizon is average six point six percent total return per year well four point two of that is their dividend yield meaning capital appreciation is only been two point four evolve rises been averaging a total return of six point six percent per year last five years the market's delivered nine point one so what's the sub market performer Verizon in my book in my best stocks now databases rank number three thousand and seventy seven out of five thousand three hundred eighteen where's the alpha okay there

Twenty Eight Percent, Billion Dollar And Eight Billion Dollar discussed on Public Affairs Programming

"I came to Congress I decided to make tobacco my issue we had some successes in order in nineteen eighty seven in my third term in the house second term on the Appropriations Committee I successfully passed appropriations amendment banning smoking on eighty percent of airline flights in the United States it was a minor it was a major miracle no one expected this young congressman from Illinois with the opposition of both Republican and democratic leadership to pass this measure on the floor what they fail to understand is the house of representatives is the largest free could flyer club in America and they were sick and tired of secondhand smoke on airplanes and voted with me the bill was signed into law by president Ronald Reagan despite big tobacco fighting all the way they called my band quote an intrusion on individual rights you may hear echoes of that in this room today it was just the first step I didn't realize that eliminating this inconvenience was a tipping point but it was it turned out that a lot of people thought well of secondhand smoke is dangerous on a plane what is the dangers in a movie theater in a restaurant in a bowling alley we also went on directly after big tobacco's efforts to adopt children which is why we made cigarettes more expensive with taxes that is the single greatest deterrent to children turning to cigarettes we dump Joe camel and the Marlboro man as part of a national lawsuit with prohibited kid friendly flavors and cigarettes like strawberry and grape and since these historic changes the percentage of youth smokers declined from twenty eight percent twenty eight percent in the year two thousand to less than eight percent today however anyone who believes that the multi billion dollar tobacco industry would go quietly ignore the power of their greed and that's why we're here today losing their precious market share big tobacco put their researchers and markers to work first they needed a new product the didn't Kerry the moral taint of cancer causing tobacco even better if it looked like USB flash drive could easily slip into a kids laptop they needed a campaign that included an unproven positive health claim such as Jules current make the switch slogans they relied on a multi billion dollar twelve point eight billion dollar investment from an old standby L. trivia formally known as Philip Morris they needed a special strategy focused on kids because they knew the children for a variety of reasons the most absurd susceptible new users of products it worked with cigarettes it was going to work again with jewel invading how did they lower the kids I've got a bag full of all of the different flavors I will go through a mall but the include fruit medley gummy bear whipped cream unicorn razzle berry and cotton candy I go tell me that's all about adult switching from cigarettes to vaping finally and this is critical they needed the food and drug administration to look the other way as their massive empire mushroomed and metastasized unfortunately the FTA FTA is been happy to service that accomplish delaying commonsense regulation of the E. cigarette industry by years refusing to move remove illegal products on the market and standing silent in the face of these false health claims by jewel I made it clear to the acting FDA commissioner doctor Sharpless and commissioner got leave before him the FDA's helpless spectator ship has to come to an end whether by law regulation court order or discovering the political will to get off the sidelines so what's been the result of big tobacco and big vapes efforts combined with the FDA's abject failure to regulate the industry despite their authority twenty seventeen twenty eighteen the number of American teenagers using any tobacco product increased by nearly forty percent this was the largest single year increasing use tobacco use ever that's right all of our significant harder and gain she reduced youth use of tobacco products are being re first because of the cigarettes like tool and the accompanying kid friendly flavors and all of the full page jul adds the crying children you know we see them you seem in the hill roll call political Washington post New York times Wall Street journal this isn't a new tactic that's exactly what big tobacco to when we said lay off the kids they bought full page ads in the Wall Street journal saying we don't want kids to smoke cigarettes how many kids do you think it up in the morning to read the Wall Street journal exactly none this is just a PR campaign now by jewel once by big tobacco to try to say that they have a business model that really isn't directly kids the facts tells of the words to combat today's vaping epidemic hi there is bipartisan bicameral legislation to crack down on kid friendly E. cigarette flavors I'm joined by senator Lisa Murkowski Republican of Alaska representatives to get some rest our safe kids would give the cigarette companies one year to prove their products meet three criteria first companies would have to prove that their products actually help adults cigarette smokers to quit second they have to prove their products don't harm the people using them third E. cigarette companies would have to prove their products do not cause children to start using nicotine if the federal tobacco twenty one bill moves this year I think it might listen it's imperative that the legislation includes strong provisions crackdown on kid friendly E. cigarette flavors that are affecting our kids the someone who lost his father is a kid to smoke "We're gonna Clio you why why Philip Morris would you give a discount for people that don't smoke? That's kind of admitting that it's a problem. Right. There's something obvious right here in front of me. And I haven't haven't. Yeah. Graphs it yet. That's pretty interesting. It's called refugee the wholly owned subsidiary. They'll be selling life insurance plans to expand. To the markets all across the planet smokers will receive discounts if they stop smoking quitter switch to possibly carcinogenic product. Like, maybe a Philip Morris vaping device they say, that's what they say. Maybe they know there's an opportunity here because if you are a smoker the insurance is going to cost you a lot. Yes, they see the opportunity they're going to keep promoting their products, of course, in any way. They can. So they're hoping that they're going to say, we'll give you a discount if you stop. But they ready you smoke, right? They would rather you smoke and smoke smoke of good smoke up, Johnny. That's it. That's it. We're going to kill you. But will also ensure your life. Listen, dress codes and public schools can be very controversial. Yes, they have been. I mean students have led protests. It's been a big deal. Right. There's one the Houston area high school has addressed code, obviously. But they have a dress code for the parents officials at James Madison high school say they will turn away parents who show up wearing pajamas hair rollers or leggings bonnets are also banned principal Carl Brown said in the letter to parents, you also can't wear a shower cabin. Of any kind in the building. The dress code was established after Houston TV station reported apparent was asked to leave after she showed up wearing a head scarf and a t shirt dress. It is about setting good examples for your kids, you don't shower cap to school or your pajamas. What if you just got out of shower, she just got out of bed count on air when we just need to raise the bar man that doesn't. "In this earning season, which we should have a pretty good feel for where this quarter that ended in the on December thirty first two thousand eighteen is going to end up as of last week. We're looking for a twelve point nine percent bump in earnings versus the same quarter last year. I think the more important number is the quarter that we're currently in this quarter that we're currently in which is now what five five weeks out of twelve weeks into it thirteen weeks into it. We could actually have our first negative comparison quarter over quarter in a long long time. Well, we're up against some very tough comparisons. Because now we're into comparing quarters with the tax cut quarters of last year. But it is earnings earnings earnings that Dr stocks, Dr stock indexes individual, stocks, etc. And that's why I focus so much on earnings or if you own your own business, and you want to increase the value of your business increase the earnings of the business. We've seen a lot of examples of companies that have had exploding sales or sales are increasing wildly, but their earnings aren't increasing. While the I think I think that Twitter is a good example of that. I think that Snapchat is an excellent example of that. It's one thing to increase sales. But if you're not dropping more and more to the bottom line. That's what really makes your company more valuable. Whether it's a publicly traded company or a privately held company. Okay, before I get into Chipotle. I have to do a big one. I have to throw a big one in there once in a while because I know that a lot of people out there. Own these great big stocks from my perspective, the years I've been in the business over two decades. Now, I see stocks like Philip Morris Johnson and Johnson Kimberly Clark. And a lot of these slow growth companies. I tend to see them amongst the very large wirehouse firms. They like to peddle own pitch. These kinds of stocks because they're big household names that people feel comfortable with. And they can always say well that stock isn't going anywhere. It's been around for ever. You know, let's just take Philip Morris. Let's let's give an example here Philip Morris, which is headquartered in New York, New York. There's a couple of lessons here in this. Analysis number one do not chase stocks for big dividend yields. You know, I'm a I was a very active writer on seeking alpha. I was contributing a lot of articles to them. But I just saw that whole. Website and their articles drifting towards big dividend paying stocks and reits, and it really just lost its cutting edge type of content for me, and I just quit writing for them. You know, I wrote some good articles on stocks that were a little bit under the radar and. We don't know if we want to print this or not I I just said, you know, what I don't need this anymore. So I really don't right for them anymore. I see more articles about Philip Morris on their website and other big dividend per, so here's the attraction. Alright. To a retiree they pay a dividend. Yield of five point nine percent. I could live on five point nine percent on my money, but you're leaving a big part of the equation out of that dividend yield of five point nine percent. Total return is growth, the the capital appreciation or capital depreciation and the dividend combined together equal total return now my app the best stocks now app. Shows the total returns Philip Morris. Okay. This includes the dividend over the last twelve months. Philip Morris is down twenty four percent. Well, there's been all of you know, there's always going to be litigation issues regulatory issues with the tobacco industry. Philip Morris is down twenty four percent. I you know, what I can already hear someone say, but I'm still getting my five point nine percent dividend. Well, okay. But the stock went down by twenty nine percent that back your dividend. Your total return over the last twelve months is minus twenty four percent. In other words, if you had one hundred thousand dollars invested in Philip Morris a year ago today, it's worth seventy six thousand. How is that? A good investment. Still getting my nine percent dividend yield. Okay. All right. I give up then over the last three years. The stock has gone nowhere minus zero point eight percent. Market eleven point one over the last five years, it's delivered four point two percent per year market seven point three. And there's a lot more risk in owning Philip Morris than there isn't owning the S and P five hundred. But I promise if you gotta seeking alpha today if you go to seeking off tomorrow, you're going to see a headline of Ron articles written by some knucklehead somewhere. Why I'm backing up the truck and loading up on Philip Morris stock, well, I'm not backing up the truck loading Philip Morris despite a five point nine percent dividend Phillip Morris, currently ranks number six hundred. Surprised at writes that I be honest. On a five thousand seventy seven I concentrate on the top about three hundred. Do not chase. Don't go. Don't go chasing dividends. Isn't there? A song on that was don't go chasing waterfalls. Well, don't go chasing dividends. Either. I've seen too many five and six percent dividend yields attached to stocks that have been going down. Consider that Philip Morris was one hundred and twenty three dollars in two thousand seventeen and today at seventy six dollars per share. That is a big big loss during a bull market. In addition to that their earnings have been going down by three percent per year. All right. The cigarette smoking thank goodness is not a growth industry anymore. Now. Let's take a look at Chipotle. That is an outstanding turnaround. You know that japodlay? Went from seven hundred and fifty eight dollars per share clear down to three hundred and fifty two lost half more than half of its value. They had a problem. There Britos were serving up. You know, guacamole and pork and guard nita's and a little bit of E coli on the side. That was a major problem, especially when a company prided itself on clean, food and naturally sourced. And all this. And that their earnings went from fifteen dollars a share back in two thousand and fifteen all the way down to a dollar twenty eight per share in two thousand sixteen and guess what? One two three five years later. They're finally back to fifteen dollars per share. And they're growing again. In fact, last year their earnings were or this year. Their earnings are expected to be a thirty five percent. Their earnings are expected to be up another twenty eight percent next year. We'll they're up against pretty good comparisons right now. But still my hat is often Chipotle e for turning things around. I still don't eat at Chipotle C g you know. Look I grew up in the next to the border where there's a taco shop on every corner. It's hard for me to go into Tripoli. Well, anyways, Tripoli's earnings up twenty eight percent quarter over quarter their sales up ten percent quarter over quarter japodlay dazzles with sixty six percent digital sales growth. Yes. They'll digitally deliver. They can't do that. That's that's coming down the road somehow that you'll be able to reach right into your iphone and reach in and get your burrito. But anyways, let's just take a look at Tripolis numbers. All right. Chipotle C M G. Is. Over the last twelve months. The stock is up seventy three percent market down five point seven. But they had a bad stretch a real bad stretch of five years. You know, this reminds me of the Domino's the turnaround at Domino's remember when they were running commercials on how bad their pizza was you couldn't tell the difference between the guard board on the cross. That's not good. Well, anyways, Domino's turn things around. Domino's is actually a pretty good stock these days, and it looks like japodlay is returning to. You know superstar status. It's now back to being a fourteen billion dollar market cap company. I have a five year evaluation of nine hundred twenty is still a lot of top break in my stock because it's still carrying around.

"So what happens them while every company pulls out of motor sports except for Marlboro to this day, their parent company, Philip Morris, still sponsors, both Ferrari and do khadi since they weren't allowed to put their names on the cars or the bikes anymore. Their first effort to kind of get around that idea word to rely on loose references to their logo. Those were the very famous Barco designs of, you know, the Casey stoney era bikes and the Michael Schumacher era Ferraris, then they eventually just relied on the paint scheme itself, the colors of the cart self to reference their product, and that's how it's been ever. Since Philip Morris puts money into the team the cars in the. Bikes are red and white because of it, and I guess we're all supposed to just assume that if you around a long time, then you know, that's why the cars are red and white. But if you haven't watched for a long time, you might just think oh red and white because they're Italian colors, right? Well, no, it's because of that long standing sponsorship so fast forward to today. And apparently now the latest attempt to put a name to the face is mission. When now, and I imagine the idea here is that, you know, this kind of mysterious reference to some company you've never heard of get you then search on the internet, you end up at the Philip Morris website, and that that would be a little bit more effective than just sending the paint scheme out. There it self and expecting a young younger generation to understand what that means. And even though the website is likely last minute. Make no mistake every single word on that website was carefully crafted and run by a very expensive legal department to make sure that it wouldn't get flagged by Dorna by motor GP or by EMI of tracks. So that's the history mission win. Now is literally just another iteration of the longstanding Philip Morris sponsorship this one bit more in your face this when a bit more prominent, but still the same money coming from the same people to run the same team. And I'd imagine if it is successful here that we would see it on the Ferraris as well. I haven't seen a Florida livery for two thousand nineteen maybe it's already there. I Don you guys can tell me on the Facebook page. So that's the history behind what we're seeing on the bike. What about the scheme itself? Well, it's red like really read too much red. I mean, it is a do khadi, and it is their color, but maybe just a little bit compared to what we saw the past couple of years out of him. But the one thing I do like about this Takada paint scheme. And the reason I think it will grow on me is the very subtle reference to their goals for this year. And I don't mean what the whole mission when now, but with the paint scheme itself, I mean, obviously the words mission when now is. Reference to motor GP more than two this to Philip Morris in their business, but the livery also bears a very striking resemblance to the bike the Casey Stoner road to Dakota's less premier class title. And I don't think that's by accident at all. So well, I don't think the bike is going to be, you know, running for the motor week best livery award at the end of the year. I definitely appreciate the subtle touches and the nods of their past success and using that as a spearhead to say, okay, now's the time when we want to go out there and get another mortgagee GP world championship with Andre video. So and I'm sure it's they're just thinking with Andrea. If it's video sorry to know. So that was Jakarta presentation would have Repsol Honda while after that sharp change in direction and somewhat controversial sponsor for do cod. E, which of course, we wouldn't expect anything less of controversy and drama out of decoding the Repsol Honda introduction was tame by comparison. And that's even considering the fact that it was the first time we've ever seen or halo Renzo in Repsol leathers, which. Which should have been a big moment but do kinda stole their thunder. They're a little bit without even really trying to..

"See you on Thursday Jenner twenty four to six thirty in scripts ranch. All right. Let's go back to the calls. Let's head out to oceanside and speak with Eric Eric you're on the smart show Britain chase him. Good morning guys. I interested in your input on Philip Morris. PM? How do you hold it? It'll go by that. All right. Let's say Philip Morris International symbol is a not a bad. Start. PE ratio is thirteen verse eleven point four prices sales three point six versus three point three a little high. No price to book value tangible not tangible same for the industry. We do see price of Castro's eleven point three verse eleven point five, I know probably why you like this company's going to six point six percent dividend and come to us eighty three percent of the pay that out. I'm surprised on this. It is tobacco company sales up ten point nine percent. When the industry is up only four point eight earnings per share climbed by seventeen point six when the industry was down twenty nine point eight we do see a current ratio of one point two versus one point one no debt agree because the company has no equity the eight hundred seventy five no equity because again, they had no equity net profit margin for Philip Morris. Well, that checks in at twenty eight point. Three vs twenty eight point five receivable turnovers. Eight point eight percent twelve point seven inventory to over one point three two point to chase. What? And he's going forward. Yeah. So film more stick closer shave sixty nine dollars and fifty cents. Our surprised see this fifty two dollars and twenty five cents in that fifty two week lows sixty four dollars and sixty seven cents. I can't remember I feel like we've taken a look at tobacco companies in the past. I can't remember them ever dropping that much in the last five years, and that's pretty big. And also, you got that they've been a lot of people bought it for that dividend. I mean, your your investment loss on the capital capital loss was way.
