Examining the Powerful Culture of Charles Schwab through the Stories of its People

"Hello and welcome to the powering independence. Podcast i'm your host austin philbin and today. We have a very very very special episode. What it means to be swabi examining the powerful culture. Charles schwab who the stories of its people and i will be joined for the first time remotely by three different guests in three different locations. This is gonna be a great one. let's start with Just a little bit about you. So maybe if you could tell me a little bit about yourself your background and why to you charles. Schwab is such a great place to work. Why don't we start with brad. Well first of all things anatomy love having a philosophical conversation like this just around the business and It's been a great partnership we've had with dynasty but to be able to step back and really talk shop like this is a much appreciated break in the day. So i'm brad lawson. I do lead our relationship management teams around the country and i've been working with advisors net capacity for about twenty-three years now and i've seen schwab grow from a very small organization to arguably a very very large organization and one of the things we've released strived for the business is how do we stay small to each and every advisor to never relationship. In spite of our rapid growth and the sheer size of our platform are people in the end. The complexity within the business and the schwab has been able to remain very entrepreneurial with a with a flat organization. It's very easy to navigate They're also very few hierarchical walls within schwab so as large as we become is still under easy to get work done. Every day to collaborate on clint solutions and in the second aspect of the business in schwab is philosophically. Were aligned with advisors We put clients first. We are a market driven organization not a marketing organization which to me means that we understand what clients want in need today into the future and we build that and if we build disciplined in scale and excellence into our model but will figure out a way to be profitable. Make money doing that at the end of the day so that that remaining small incline first pieces. The reason that i keep choosing to wake up and work here every day after twenty three years. Great to have breakfast overlooking the san francisco bay with an executive at your company and he echoed similar comments. And i just wanted to check in with you around what he said. Which was the industry as a whole seems to be migrating particularly in the larger financial institutions to a very specific advisor. One with a smaller book of business with high net worth and ultra high net worth clients. They're going to utilize multiple products. And they're going to generate a lot of revenue for the firm and he said that's that's not really the way that we think about the advisory space schwab. We think every advisor in every practice has a place here and is special. Do you see that on a regular basis with the culture of of schwab. I i do. And what's kind of validating about hearing that from a number of years ago as his. You've had that experience in the past three years and continuing for the next couple of years we are working on evolving our platform so that we can become more specialized for each constituency of advisers. We have an entire platform with a service model with people dedicated leadership and relationship management and service as well as new and scalable value added services like business consulting and other things will come. We'll get into later for advisers that have any fifty million dollars with us and we have almost five thousand advisors without under a hundred million dollars in uh platform our traditional adviser which would call a practice right Maybe budding on professional practice. That may be two three hundred million up to about a billion. That is our our tradition bread and butter and we continue to evolve our platform for those advisers. When you get about a billion dollars and particular into multi billion You know we start to see some really dynamic changes within the structures of advisory businesses and advisors go from practice to professional practice and when you have dedicated leadership centralized back office operations. Sometimes investment management start to see a miniature enterprises in sometimes quite frankly many financial institutions emerged within the ra space

"I. Mean it's not that bad for me now about fifteen years ago. So we moved into an apartment house that they built right across the street. It used to be the home of all my children and then then they tore that building. Dada was just a very small short building and they built this skyscraper at I said boy this wouldn't this be nice. This is one of the luxuries of working in New York to live across the street and walk across the street to your job, and it was and I think it helped me a lot continue to the continue to do the job. It was great. So in the morning, you wake up at seven, thirty thirty, take the shower the shave you jump into your suit, make a breakfast for yourself. Look at the paper as it is delivered to your door. Then come across the street or a day twenty check whatever else is in the papers you didn't see Gilman comes in around a quarter to nine the ten tonight we go down. Getting made up at thirty seconds tonight knock on her door out she comes we walk down the hallway and we do the show. It's a simple as that I have one more clip that I wanNA play but this one showcases you which I'm sure you're happier about and no not at all. No. But it exemplifies what I think makes you such a singular TV talent I I. I put your right up there with Jack Par- like you in terms of when you are honest and unchecked, and you just do it in front of the entire audience and in this clip this is from last week you're talking to your co host Kelly. RIPA and it the subject comes up of Andy Rooney who retired from sixty minutes just recently and then died a few weeks after that. So here is how you bring it up suddenly in the midst of the audience all warm and excited about your, you know announcing your impending retirement in the celebration that's going on. Be a little bit as Andy Rooney passed away two weeks after he left after he left outrageous now first of all. Let's right. Let's talk. Good. Guy. He was going to happen to you. Say to the GAL Meka Meka who works on on morning with what's his name? Morning Jewelry. Who I think terrific. But any we've talked about that. But Anyway Meka has said she wants worked with Eddie over at CPS Eddie said when I leave my job. Desperate. But you have never said that you just leave this job. I'm going to be a movie star. That's kind of what you said did I say that yes or you said you're GonNa be in sports broadcast or something. Movie Star Movies whatever I mean. You've you've said, a lot of death has never been an option. So let's not scares me a little bit. With. Andy. Rooney. I just think that's such an honest exchange or those sorts of things that you plan at all to say beforehand or regret afterwards. No not really you know of the different any writers so neither, one of US know the other one is going to say, that's the whole point of working with me. I think I function better like that and so whatever flashes through your mind and I forget what preceded it? You're right the audience seemed to be in a good mood. But anyway Andy's passing two weeks after he he left his job after. So many years did flash through my mind just popped out I thought Kelly handled it very well. In these last few weeks when when the show has been making such a big deal about your departure d you have a lot of input into what guests are allowed on and not on and what segments or do you like to stay away from that. So that you're not culpable. No I don't have much input into it. I think there's you know I I'm kidding around with them now saying you know, Gilman is there. Is. There may be too much of farewell to Regis that people are subjected to with all this. It wasn't my idea stephen stay this long I thought I was GONNA get out of the end of my contract in August. But ABC S to I wouldn't mind spending a few more months I, I don't know. Prevalent for the last ratings month of the year perhaps regional very much they go. David. Beyond. Cooley. you're probably right at that's all a part of our businesses is fine I'll do it, and so that's what we're doing. But no I have very limited input. But I'm kind of pleased with the way it's going I. Hope you know it couldn't go much longer than. The two weeks, Iran doing it, but other than that everything's good. listen. My last question is about something else from your book you end each chapter with little morals or or fables epigrams I. Don't know. Yeah. Life's lessons they call it well, the one, the one that I want to quote end our conversation is one chapter says ends with one that says if you are grateful to someone who's brought your life, you know even a little joyfulness and if you have the chance to tell them, so do it it just takes a second and you'll never regret it. So thanks. Well. Thank you very much and I I agree with what what you just read because pertains to Bing Crosby, who never called who I was afraid to call who I didn't think it was I was important enough to call. He never did know what he meant to me as a as a little boy growing up in the Bronx and as a guy trying to break into into our business well I'm glad I got a chance on your final week on this show to say. Thank you for I. Remember when I came to New York I wrote about your program and identified it as a guilty pleasure and you complain like what is there to be guilty about and I never forgot that that was very well, you know people have said that like they're ashamed that they spend any time watching the show in the early days I used to hear that. But nevertheless, they will watching it I. was glad to hear it whether we're was guilty or Edison. Glad you will be beyond cooling. I still am listen Regis Philbin next. Thanks for being on fresh air. Thanks Buddy. Regis Philbin visiting fresh air and twenty eleven. He died last Friday of a heart attack at age eighty eight. A personal note, he was one of the nicest people I ever knew in show business and like Fred Rogers and very few others was exactly the same off camera as he was when the TV lights were on. After a break, we'll remember any Ross who died Tuesday at age eighty nine. She was a member of the inventive jazz vocal trio Lambert Hendricks, and Ross. Rock critic Ken Tucker will review the new Taylor Swift Album And I'll review the new Disney plus series muppets now. I'm David Being Cooley and this is fresh in. Some. "With the street corners of the Bronx I would recreate maybe a ball game we played a Bronx Park that afternoon and who made a mistake and who you know. It was it was always very funny and so. I I remembered that and I wished I could do that on TV instead of reading somebody's jokes which I could never do. By then I had seen Jack Parr do something that gave me the confidence that I also could do it wasn't a matter of duplicating part it was doing my version of it and I can't tell you how many times they said that to Jack Parr. Jack you were the one that that told me what to do with whatever talent if you have. To call it that that I had and he wouldn't hear it. Of course, because he he was a great fan of television and he couldn't get over the fact that or by that time I had a co host and and he couldn't get over the fact that we were working with each other, not knowing where we were going with that I twenty minutes. But. That's the way I wanted to do it because I felt that was the best way I could do it. Your hope I answered your question I don't even know. was better than. No no no. Don't like that David your fine. All right. We're up to Joey Bishop now, and this is where a lot of people I learned about you and saw you nationwide was his joey bishop's announcer sidekick right and he called you a good listener as your major talent but. The. The thing about the book that I did not know it. It's one of the most famous episodes. Of the first round of TV late night wars where you walk off. And sort of leave the show it was after Jack Parr had famously done it for a few months objecting to. On his program but this is the first time decades after it happened that I've learned that he bishop convinced you to do it as sort of a rating stunt because Johnny Carson, was coming to town. Well that's exactly what happened and and frankly this is the first time I've admitted that to anyone I didn't want WanNa Tar Joey's Damon. Anyway. He was the one that frankly made a little joke of it at the beginning and yes, he was the one who? He had watched me do an interview with Joe Pine and he was looking for. Those who know Joe Fine Yeah? No, they don't know. No one knows Joe Joe Pine anymore but he was the toughest of all the radio guys in the world and that's in the book too. But Anyway Joey that interview and I went to them and as I walked in the door. So they saw you last night you got a lot of talent. I said, wait a minute. This is the answer to my question all my life what is by talent? And so he is. So he thought for a long time and I made a long time but it was embarrassing because I had come in put him on the defensive with a question instead of questioning meet. And finally said you. You are a great look. At. I said well, you know I'll take it at the guy can get fat at least. That's that's good for what I'm going to be doing here with you. Now, we're doing the job and you know we're on ABC and ABC is in the strongest NBC in those years it was began after NBC Johnny had held a showdown for a while he had a great following. It was tough to crack the code there at eleven thirty at night. And so One day as walking up. The street they're taking our walk every afternoon Joey said you know? I have a great idea a great idea. Yeah. Involves you. I said Really Joey what what can I do? And he said, here's what we're going to to. You'RE GONNA walk off the show you're going to be angry what what's your heard in the hallway that ABC like you that you know you're not doing the job but I'm going to bring you back because I think you're doing the job in other words Joey was you know making himself a hero and also getting some attention to the show and maybe people would tune in to see what happens to this young guy who walks off the show. Well look I'm working for Joey Bishop I'm trying to do my job. He said he would bring me back and so I didn't WanNA. Do it. But I did it. And I walked off the show. and. Everyday. Joey would say I went out looking for regis today I went down to the beach I mean he would say incredible steely things you're you're very diplomatic about it but reading between the lines it really seems as though Joey bishop hung out to dry on that thing. What I, what I reread it and what I think about it he did but he did bring me back. So it's just a show business stunt to attract attention and build a rating. That's what it comes down to. And maybe he did with the way you look at it, you could read that into a chore. So let me let me play something for you and see how you reacted this. This is from One of your recent shows, Adam Sandler came on. As a guest in New York Co host Kelly ripper there and everybody wants to sort of do what midler hit with Johnny Carson, and serenade you somehow or do somebody you're up. You're absolutely right. That's what's been happening and he had a poem. Right? He had a poem. So let's hear the poem. This about four in the morning last night because I was so. I. Know this is my last time with your age on the show, but we're going to hang out in real life but here we go. How could you leave US Regis? You're quitting is simply egregious. Good. Word. We need your band with Kelly Jaz. Youtube make us laugh till we pages. You've had so many Hoes Kelly Kathy Lee. Even, Cindy Garvey sat here with you. And before them Kitty Carlisle Lillian Gish. Madame Curie to. That's Adam Sandler serenading our guest Regis Philbin with Kelly ripa standing by there are there any secrets for being a morning person and being on? How do you get so much energy in the morning well, after awhile you develop it for the morning. It's the afternoons where you feel like you're going to die. no you know that you've got to be up and.

Gifford, who hosted Live with Regis and Kathie Lee, from 1985 to 2000 was on the Today show yesterday talking about why she worked so well with Regis Philbin. He was an entertainer in his guts, and so is I. And so when we came together, although we didn't have a friendship, yet we had a mutual respect for what we had accomplished already in in our in our careers, and we had the same sense of humor. And and I wasn't afraid of him. And he sure as heck was not afraid of me, and we just took off like a rocket. "They never count them unless one in a million times. If they have to like this Carolyn Maloney race for Congress up for reelection was almost like a it was a total tie. There was no winter, so they have to count the absentee ballots. In the way they do that, is they? Take them all and they pile them up in a room and they count them this time. It's being done at Queens borough hall by Queens Democratic Politicians. That sounds like a bunch. You could trust, doesn't it? Exactly that sounds pretty. So they pick who they want their now remember in Florida in the last election same thing they take all the ballots in a room and vel count on these local Democrat. Municipal Bureaucrats don't count it for him, so what the president did. He sent in a lot of people, hundreds of people from the Justice Department hundreds observers to stand right over everybody and make sure the count was accurate. You can do that if you switch to mail in votes for everybody. The the count room doesn't even matter. The tampering takes place before they're mailed. In other words, let's say there's. All the mail and votes for a nursing home somebody will intercept them before they get the nursing home, or they'll steal them and then they'll fill them out and mail them back, or they'll mail in millions of votes for dead people for a prison. Just make up name and you know when when people say, there's no evidence of no evidence. This it the people in jail right now for this plenty of cases where this has happened I saw somebody bring that up to Stephanopoulos. He said, but there are people sitting in jail. All of America for this I can name you thousand cases where tap and and he said well, there's there's no evidence of widespread tampering well. There would be if the if they do this mail in votes if they do it. Be Very afraid you. Hopefully, it won't happen. Some people think that's why they're trying to Jack Up. The Corona virus numbers as high as they can. In order to shut down the polling places enforce mail in voting. So that's what that's all about. Hey, you remember the kid with the red hat. The teenager Nicolas Sandman Were they from Iowa place. It was a bunch of kids high school. Kids who are wearing the red Maga- hats and that old. Indian came over. And at first you saw video where they were taunting this poor old Indian. They were right in his face. they were right in his face, taunting him. smirke will it turned out. He was the only I can't think of anybody else. Who is one thousand percent the same guy off the air on the air? There is absolutely no difference. Who could you say that about besides regis. Maybe Joe Bartlett. That's about it. Try you know. Yeah Number Joe Bartlett. It's like ninety nine percent reaches one hundred percent, but as you could testify, there are plenty of guys on the air to say hello good morning, and then they'll say God bless you and thank you for listening soon as Mike's up. Could you record this I'm not. Screaming like a maniac. You see that all the time. Most of them. There, million syllabi I can't take times I've been on the telethon where the guy is crying over the children. The children were here for the children's soon as all these kids don't get him out. You see this all the time. Their recordings of some people floating around and those kind of Regis Philbin exactly the same guy. We'll take calls later about it, but I know many people have run into madame. They'll tell you the story. The same exact guy that was absolutely no difference. supposed to see him Saturday night at He had a restaurant vel Bella which is in Greenwich and Manhattan was his favorite restaurant on earth. Say hello to everybody who came over to. Go in those rooms. If there was a wedding, he would wander into your wedding. Say hello to everybody. If you said any celebrity is a wedding extra. The pride would like to say hello. Courageous would go in there and spend ten minutes mingling. He was that kind of guy he had possibly the single best marriage ever saw joy his wife. Regis Philbin Was an Entertainer In the Truest Sense

"Was talk. Regis Philbin. You know the connection. Our friend Frank Dawson. The loophole Sapporo have Valley Hall of Fame. The coach Lou hold too many others. This was a guy who was larger than life. And as I've been saying all day, and I said it before David Letterman, but I totally agree, he said he is a significance to television as Johnny Carson and this death is as big as the death. Of the Great late night. King of talk shows Johnny Carson as it is to the king of daytime television talk. The man that wrote the book. Regis Philbin, Teddy. Well, you know, we had the honor of having him come to mountaineer and perform at the harbor with Don Rickles and Regis was a heck of a singer and musician. A lot of people didn't really get to see that side of him that often. They saw the talk show entertainer, but he was an incredible entertainer musician. And then when you you matched him with Don Rickles that we had it who we had at Mountaineer three or four times, actually. But, uh, it was just an incredible show, and I got to have dinner with both of them after the show, sitting in LabOne be a great restaurant at Mountaineer. And it was just a thrill. I mean, it was. They brought me back through the Johnny Carson through Frank Sinatra and all of the relations that they had going back throughout the history of really Entertainment in America as we know it today, Post World War two and it was just fascinating. The 88 years old but was probably in great shape. I haven't really seen much of them in the last year, but He loved to work out. He was really just as nice. A man and a person sitting and having dinner just as he was, as you saw on TV, so I have nothing but great things to say about him. And and when you match him with Don Rickles It was just out of control. I mean, they were so funny and great together, you know, and how loyal he was to his friends. Digger has so much meaning our friend Frank Dawson. To promote this region and I alluded to on social media yesterday, did it again today and on the radio First thing this morning, Frank Dawson did amazing things he would actually get introduced in the audience tonight during that television show when it was live being seen locally on Channel four across the country through the Great brand, that is Disney. They formed a partnership of bond there, he would actually come to speak in East Liverpool. He was on the steps of the Carnegie Library downtown across from the alumni building in East Liverpool. And he loved Dean Martin. Obviously, he worked with Joey Bishop for a while, he took. Who wants to be a millionaire into the biggest thing? Maybe since gaming has been permitted in Pennsylvania and West Virginia. I mean, people loved it. It was like a wagering on your favorite team. People gravitated to it. Millions of viewers. It ran them more than one night in prime time and anything that it went up against it beat. This guy was a communicator. But as I mentioned today, Teddy, he could talk just about any subject, and he was also when he had to be a great serious interviewer to so Regis Philbin may have seemed like the kid next door, but he really was a heavyweight in this business. Absolutely. Buddy was like the kid next door. He was like your next door neighbor and you sat down with him and just like people got the CM on Regis and Kathie Lee, how he was able to just talk with anybody about anything sports. He knew everything about sports. Entertainment. He knew everything about entertainment. You get into a Wall Street, you know about Wall Street in things that were going he was, and actually an aficionado of of the market. So It was just it was just fun to be with him. Hey, how

Dollar General Corporation Reports First Quarter 2020

"It's Thursday may twenty eighth welcome the Markets Lori. I'm Chris L. Joining me from Florida. The one and only Dan Klein good to see my friend. Hey there Chris. It is a rainy week here in Florida. It is a rainy day here in the Alex so so I feel for at least for today. Only we've got some retail news. We've got some employment news. We've got entertainment news but we're going to start with dollar general. First quarter. Profit and revenue came in higher than expected for Dollar General. Same store sales. Were up nearly twenty two percent that is not a Typo that is not me misspeaking. Same store sales for dollar general up nearly twenty two percent just a monster quarter yeah. These numbers are incredible. And there's a reason for dollar. General is a business that serves people that are under served. They're generally neighborhood stores so a lot of their customer base can walk to them or it's a very short drive so at a time or under stay at home order shelter in place. Whatever you WANNA call it. This is the only option for some people who are otherwise taking the bus to go to a grocery store so you could have predicted this beforehand. This is a company that sells everything. Groceries toilet paper. You know your iphone charger breaks. They'll have an iphone charger cleaning supplies. I'm sure they adjusted merchandise. They're probably selling a lot less pool noodles right now But that type of stuff so these are stores that had a really strong supply chain. They're clustered tightly together. They can often be a mile apart. That's how narrow the area they they serve and they are. Fips up seventy three percent and there's no reason to believe this won't continue as long as we're in this current situation. You know it's an interesting thing to think about because Gerry Philbin. Is the CEO of dollar tree. Dollar Tree is the parent company of both dollar tree and family dollar an interview he gave on. Cnbc this morning and that was one of the questions that was put to him was essentially okay a year from now. What kind of comps expecting from you? Because dollar tree also came OUT WITH THEIR FIRST QUARTER REPORT. Not exactly the same type of cops to that. They were putting up but family dollar stores. I think the same store sales growth was about fifteen and a half percent. So I think it's going to be a really interesting thing to watch with. Both of these businesses is. Can they keep this going? Because one of the things Philbin said was look in in the wake of the great recession. There were a lot of customers who were just sort of trying out for the first time and we kept a lot of them so I think it'll be interesting to see the other thing. He said that I feel like I took this as an encouraging sign for all. Us consumers so whether you own dollar tree or dollar general one of the things Philbin talked about was the supply chain. And how in April household essentials were selling out in two hours? And that's getting better. That's better now. He didn't say they were sort of at full capacity sort of normal capacity but he did say he thinks they will get there and several weeks and I just thought well you know. That's that's I don't know it's it's encouraging news to think that whether it's dollar general dollar tree family dollar target Walmart whatever. Your Neighborhood Grocery story is if they can start getting back up to capacity for just those basic household essentials. We're all going to breathe a little easier. Yeah Chris I'll speak a little been anecdotally for first thing that's also important to point out. That dollar general is not a dollar store. They are a low price retailer so that gives them a lot of optionality by not having a sort of artificial price cap limit. I will say that I've been Awad. Recently that is a privately held chain of gas stations and convenience stores and they've had toilet paper and paper towels and doesn't seem to be a major run on the my wife has been in target and Publix and while she couldn't get the brand she wanted we were able to get that we've been able to order hand sanitizer on Amazon. It's hand sanitizer of brand. I've never heard of that. I hope is made of what they say. It's made of but that said it smells like ten sanitizer so I think the supply chain is largely returning to normal. The other thing we all heard about was Oh my God. We're going to run out of meat. There's a huge shortage of meat. And I can say that you don't have every cut of meat.
