"Shortened 60 game season last year. Baseball returns to the full slate of 162 games. The Braves Open in Philly today is W S. B. J Black reports. There's unfinished business. Atlanta's rebuild its rotation with the additions of Drew Smiley and Charlie Morton, who quickly see the Braves formula. So good dudes that just buy into what's going on. It's very rare professional sport where you have so many different guys that they all like each other. And Freddie Freeman anchors and elite line up with Ronald Akunyili, while Max Freed gets his first opening day start, was excited. Something that you dream about something that you work for top prospect. Christian Pasha is also rookie of the Year candidate. But the division is much tougher first pitch just after three around 9000 fans will be in the stands in Philadelphia today. The brace will allow about 13,000 for next week's home opener.

No Kemba Walker Spells Danger for the Celtics

"Me if the Celtics don't have a healthy Kemba Walker by February 1st during major trouble like making kiss. This is a good by going deep in the playoffs. They got no chance you lose Hayward and then you're going to lose Kemba I get you get Tristan Thompson's great as as a auxiliary. Peace, but I I don't think it gives you a much different than what Daniel theis does. He gives you a toughness it gives you a rebound and gives you an athletic hard work and forward, but but it's not like either one of those guys. You can't neither one of them are scores. No, but they don't need a score of their know if they you know, if they if they don't have Kemba, I don't have Kimber. Yeah, right. I know right? Well, that's that's my big issue is if you don't have Kimber Kemba needs to be he's gotta be your number two guy Tatum's clearly your number one now. I don't think anybody would argue with that. But Kim is gotta be your number too. And if they don't have him you go from Kim, but it's Jeff Teague. And again, we didn't see a healthy Kimball last year. We remember Kimba as man. He just wasn't very good in the postseason you forget Charlotte Kemba and if you have Charlotte came up to me, then this team has a chance to come out of the East without Charlotte Kemba. All right, so I agree with that but I still don't think they're disaster. I think there's still a good team good team. Are you better I mean if it were just trying to invalid and prorating how many W's with a truncated season if it were an eighty-two Game season, I'm Kemba Walker. Could be a 45 6:20. Yeah. Yeah, I would I would agree with that but looking at it now without camp for half the year. Let's say let's say he doesn't come back until February 1st. So he's going to miss 2 months of a 72 game schedule. So what's that a third of the year? No not too much six weeks because they're starting on the 23rd of December. Okay, so often so just so I don't have any, you know, the I mean, I don't want to start trying to do math in my head. That's so humorous five weeks five six weeks probably, you know before he gets a hundred percent. He maybe maybe too much but they're going to come back to schedule. So at least 15 games. I'm sure this is why the Jeff Teague signing was so important. Oh it was I was a terrific signing and if I can put him doing what he should you know, how long we know who he is, you know, we know what it is and he's it's a high quality of such a high-quality auxiliary piece. He's a very useful auxiliary teasing. You're right. If you're going to make him a if you want to elevate him into a starter and a guy to your depending on then that's a different matter. But using him the way he said they projected, you know, that was an excellent pick up, you know, so but let's go through Bob without without a healthy camera. Tell me if they're better than any of these teams. Okay with our healthy Kim but like like a 90% Kemba ready Milwaukee. No. Toronto No the Nets. We don't know probably find Miami now clearly not know we go down there. Yeah, Philadelphia Phillies a mystery guest now, we think they saw that they they've done what they need to do. We think. All right. Let's see but I cuz I thought it would suck. Yes. I mean, yeah, I think seven Indiana is better without Kemba. Okay. So you got you got one more to throw in the mix Home Improvement team, but you know as Atlanta they're going to read during pooped on paper. The good thing is the good thing is even without camera there probably a lot for the play-offs but they you're talking about seven problems. I agree. Well, that's you know now why that's true. So I think we can agree on

"Tony i wanna see a few words about the passing of dick allen. One of my favorite players as a teenager philadelphia phillies richie allen. But he wanted. Mvp on the south side in one thousand nine hundred seventy two plan for the white sox and two years later tony. He had what i thought was a but at the time was a fifteen year old kid in attendance. It was split. Check swing down the third base line. One out in the ninth inning against nolan ryan broke up the no hitter. The closest i ever came to seeing a no hitter in person with all the games. But dick allen he was a hell of a player probably didn't get his do then and michael schmidt one of your favorite players know a big defender of dick or richie allen whatever. He was particularly affiliate for mike schmidt. Just a wondrous player michael jackman. He's one of the greatest third baseman of all time.

Where do you see the side of this side of the industry in the future. Where where's it going from here. Is it more just getting more teams to adapt this and embrace it or is there something else that can do that can be done here. And we're in kind of the infancy of of mental skills training side of things. What do you see in the future. Yeah i definitely think we're in the infancy stages. I think it's going to continue to go. Continue to grow I literally i see it being an emory college. I being an every professional sports. I e maybe even people having their own people on the side you know just just like it's just like strength and conditioning. "Back to the seven seed in the wild card kind of sort of there, also directly tied with the Philadelphia Phillies. For that seven seed, But but things seem right again. They're back in their home ballpark, hitting home runs on DH. The only difference was that they did it first. This time they got out ahead. Of the other team, and it actually helped the Mark Sanchez. Our guy who covers the team, like a blanket joins us now. Mark what's going on tonight? I'm doing well market. It was funny to hear you say, you know, things are back to normal as they're playing a game in San Francisco, But right now, this is normal, Okay? I'm doing Well, how are you? I'm great man. I'm wondering if you think that that they sort of snuck some sort of an advantage out of all this that I didn't really see coming. And I think the obvious part was, Oh, they get to play there. They're home confines. That's great. I hadn't put it together until tonight that they're not leaving the Bay Area again. That's huge for them. Yeah, absolutely. I mean, they go to Oakland, and that's that's the hardest trip. At this point. I mean, it's still I'm positive that sounds. It's still 13 games in 12 days. It's still ending with four against the Padres. Three. AIDS is not going to be easy in terms of Travel. Uh, as long as Things that normal here they really they would keep the middle bed. I'm sure they enjoy that. No doubt about it in tonight, the the real highlights or the fact that you got home runs and multi hit games from Brandon Belt. Evan Longoria and Brandon Crawford, the old Staples. So mark what? What can you say about these three guys this year and especially with the DOD In the second half of this season. Absolutely, I mean, they'll hurt three that baby. You had the biggest questions coming into this year where You know, with those contracts? They're going to be here for a little bit. Um, and that was the That was sort of a mission of this staff to forget things from these guys, and they have all are looking younger. Although looking swings look great. Uh, Well, we talked to after the game, and he said, Well, we know what exactly is different about this team. And he said, top to bottom, everyone hating everyone putting good about together and I do wonder. Not just you know, they moved them offensive, which I'm sure helps the mentality for all of them. But when you've got Solano when you've got Stransky when you've got no later when he's been hitting on healthy and you've gotta line up that Florida too. That one through nine He's really functioning and also in theirs. You wonder what kind of effect that has mentally on these guys who in your path, they probably thought I have to carry this team. You know, I have to get it. If the team can do Well, um right now. Everyone. It's pretty much playing well. And you know what kind of belt even I think coming into the Today we have been over 12 mini slump. That's sort of been the calling card of the team that even when They're not playing well, someone else picked up the slack and other guys and pick up the slack. And today he's hitting again. All three of those guys that's encouraging as the Giants could ask for. Let's spotlight Crawford for a second, because it's fascinating that you know, I read from Pavlovich tonight that even if his defensive metrics are up, and we all remember before the year started the sort of indirect shot. I don't think it was meant that way. But Gabe Kapler's had some comments that certainly Probably got Crawford's attention, and I know he was. He was ultra focused on on turning things around this year and early in the year. It didn't look like they would, but But here they are, And he's about to set all these Career highs, and it looks like even has his legs back. I mean, what? What? What's the level of of surprise or or what insight can you give on what it was that he did? That's helped him turn this around. Remember the first two weeks of the season when the Giants had the worst defense in baseball? Remember how we have some? Donovan Solano shortstop days? Some marketable and shortstop days on this general chaos around the infield if they didn't really know. What to do, and they were critical errors. There were mental hours on Brandon Crawford was not hitting lefties. And so he was out of line up pretty much every other day. And he wasn't happy about that. And team wasn't happy about that because the defense was collapsing without him. I also say that the bone is now playing a very good centerfield Brandon Crawford. Side typically was the 28th best shortstop in baseball last year this year. I think that that is that he is the 16th defender in any position that he's the fourth best shortstop in all of baseball, according to the Above average, keep tabs He is really reversed completely. The trend that he had been going on each year was Worse in the last at the plate and in the field, you know, he looked more clear put this year. He is stealing more bags. Anything he had. He is definitely horning in on pitches, and that's the big thing that With this lineup, and everyone talked about the process and you wait for your pitch about when you get it. You hit it on. Think it was a month, six home run of the year for him this year, six Number six, uh, it it's been remarkable on both sides. How? How quickly he has turned around the trends of his career. Incredible stuff. Mark Sanchez is with us. By the way you mentioned do bond going to center field. I spoke to him yesterday. I didn't realize how much he loves it. He loves it like he never wants to leave. Center field. I wonder, though, do the Giants feel the same way? A bear with a record of all you know, he could be playing right field like a second, basically playing third base, and I think he would tell you he loved you just as happy if you possibly get Ah, that's a good question, because I think he's proven right now that you can play center field at At the very least of average level, which is remarkable for someone who hadn't played that airfield really coming into this year. Um, what you're gonna hinge on is What they see in Elliot Ramos and maybe even Hunter Bishop next year, maybe two years on the line where you know those guys. They both think complacent airfield and if they keep progressing, and they're there Breaking in and suddenly you've got the type of problem that giant wanna have. And that's when you start seeing the bond playing second base and filling in for Crawford at shortstop and playing every third day in center field. Give one of those guys a break. And that's how they envision using using where they're They're thrilled that year that you can put him in center field pretty much every day on his daddy looked better and his love Is it really tremendous how Solid looked, but in the future, I think it's going to hinge on how ready those young center fielders are when they're gonna be ready. We talk so much about the log Jam it, catcher Joey Bart Buster Posey will return..

Their entire bullpen has overturned from the worst bullpen in. Baseball, they added four guys via the trade and then you get two guys won via call once coming back from the COVID nineteen list who hasn't played all year. So they're going to have six new guys available in that bullpen, and then a couple of holdovers from last year, and you're going to see upwards of eight guys who weren't getting the baseball for this team in the bullpen in the month of August who now will be in September and they could potentially make a run because if you get those top two again in that rotation, best five, you're getting three starts from wheeler and Nola Yeah I mean I'm I'm looking forward to that I certainly am

And here's the call from New York. The headsets come off and he is safe in the game is over, and the Phillies have won it. It is, in fact, a walk off winner is heard on Sports Radio 94 W I. P. Bryce Harper getting there. Game winning blow with the Phillies cashing in as I mentioned on the ace, less METS, New York, Scratching the reigning two time Cy Young winner Jacob the ground for Friday start because of neck tightness. No D L For now. Harper on NBC Sports Philadelphia on his walk off winner really fast out there, and I kind of thought of all those hard. Um, but you know he's earned it. Let him score right there. So pretty happy about that one. You hold your breath. I would imagine now waiting for that replay to show up on the big screen. Pretty pretty special slide by Roman when they put the kid in there is that ball beat up by a little bit 100%. I mean, you know, being able to have a guy like that on second base. I mean, He, uh He's one of those guys in league so good throw by Conforto right there and just bang bang and he got in there so very, very happy about that

"Two games on the schedule, Clippers and Lakers. The second game Ah baseball update A coach in a home clubhouse attendant for the Philadelphia Phillies have tested positive for the cove it they were supposed to play a double header. They have not been playing weren't supposed to play until tomorrow night. They're supposed to play a double header against Toronto on Saturday. Those games have been canceled or postponed or whatever they're going to call it now. So the Marlins, of course, the ones with the Scarlet letter now the Marlins were in Philadelphia last weekend. The Phillies. We're not going to play until they got everybody tested. Then they've all been tested and again right now, it's just a coach and a Hold'em clubhouse attendant. They have cancelled their workout at their home park Today. They were scheduled to play the Blue Jays this weekend. The current manager in Toronto, says those games will not be played. So I thought we were going to get away with this one. But I don't know if that's I don't know. But I do know one thing. It's time for swamp Watch. It is we're already to the way that I didn't want to play it before. John Lewis make strange. Good call. We're going to drain the swamp of Washington. We're gonna have fun doing it. "Keep Hitting us on Twitter using Fitzsimmons idea fits ESPN My handler, Coleman ESPN, So I know that Major league baseball doing with the Miami Marlins situation But there's no doubt there's been good news regarding the other team was involved the Philadelphia Phillies because many people will wandering many people predicting Behave. Marlins had that kind of outbreak with their team involving Cove in 19. It's only a matter of time before that's going to the Philadelphia Phillies. Here. We are Wednesday in Fitzsimmons, 72 hours after the weekend. Siri's and still No positive test when it comes to Cova, 19 involving that baseball team, that TV show Freddy no whammies, right pressure. I'm not right now. He's not worried about the Marlins. A shallow as that sounds that's going on and his initial statement. It's like he feels for the Marlins. We all feel for the Marlins as Faras Don Mattingly, the players. You and the guys have to come up off that added 30 man roster, you know, and they're whatever they call it, the external whatever team I can't remember. Well, whatever that is, just, you know, are free agents that are that are continuing to work out waiting on an opportunity to be to be called up. The Marlins right now, and it's somebody screwed up. Meaning? It may not be an actual marlin. It could have been them as we talked about the mailman. You know you you went and picked up food with a mask on and somebody didn't have their is up and your slipped down a little bit And who know who knows what would happen or somebody grotesquely went for chicken wings way? We don't know. But right now, as far as the rest of the league is concerned, It's all about the Philadelphia Phillies. The last team the Marlins played Day one. No positive tests Exhale. No Sleep Day two today. Zero positive tests Exhale You'd better take some melatonin like 15 milligrams Commissioner Manfred and to try and sleep tonight because you have this for another 3 to 4 days because the incubation period is around five days for Freddy to your point. And as a Mets fan, I'm rooting for the Phillies. Make sure nothing else happens to them. And using morally opposed of rooting for the Mets rooting for the village as a Mets fan, But in this situation, you know what? I'm glad that so far so good even though the next three days as you mentioned Is going to be very, very dicey, not just Philadelphia but played by the Major league baseball teams because they have an outbreak. Who knows that's going to be a reason that Major League baseball stops at the starting so Money. Time is back. Are you ready? That's next on Friday and Fitz Simmons and this is ESPN radio.

"Yeah so I couldn't agree more that a statement And I and I think you can either again having that open my open. Mind versus fixed mindset right if if you're an athlete if you were a scheme athlete and now you're trying to get a job and you're like well. I didn't have an internship. There's nothing I can do. That's a very fixed mindset right. That's well this is all I had. His belly could be. So that's all I got so I'm I'm never going to do anything or you can have open mindset of like the. This is the only thing I did. But it's so much more than that and that alone can get me to where I WANNA be like. I know companies who looking for student athletes because you know the the competitive edge the drive the time management skills the the grind. You know you get better every day. The you know you go go go until you can't go any further you know they don't have to motivate you. You have all of that. I actually my senior year. I had a Somebody come in a career fair talk soon athletes and she had a powerpoint. And there's about fifty word on there that was like the Every one of these words should be on your resume because these are skilled that you had that you don't even realize you have so so calm but everything everything we just said you know it. It's a huge part of it and I think I think time management is a big one but I think I think confidence and I think enthusiasm are two very common word and burbs of them described. I'm to me in my job and why people are telling me that I've been given getting these opportunities so when I'm talking to people who are interested in job I'm like you have to be confident in your skill especially especially in mental skills right if we hunt competent. And we're trying to teach guys to be confidant. That ain't gonNA work. You know you gotta be confident in what you're saying and then also the thing enthusiastic like if you love your job like you you should you shouldn't have to force that But if you're not like it's going to be hard to get a job ought not pumped about it Or excited about it or anything like that and so I think I think those two things that we learn as athletes you know being comeback game be confident in your ability Go straight into the workforce to and and if you find people and they're like person pretty competent and they're pretty enthusiastic. It'll it'd be really hard for not getting that job. I would imagine unless you're just not qualify. You know don't use actual qualification but if you have the qualifications and you're confident in your qualifications and then ah the ethnic about the opportunity. It'd be a win win win. It's so true like when I was in charge of hiring for when I was a news director at Fox sports northwest and I was in charge of our of our hiring. It was almost like people. Were getting bad advice where they were telling them like. Come in and you've got to be cool and you gotta be professional. And you've got to be buttoned up and you gotta be tight and I'm like I'm looking for someone. That excited like author passionate. They've they're exuding confidence and they're excited to be here and they can't wait for this opportunity like that's what I wanna see so I love that you're saying I love that you're saying that because because it's like changing your whole frame perspective on on everything you approach it with enthusiasm and do it with excitement because it really does translate and enthusiasm. Excitement can overcome sometimes a lack of certain skills. Because then you look like you're coach your coach until you can be trained all that kind of thing I think. That's no doubt no doubt Carla Group that. Yeah so let's talk about mental skills training on a on a high level and then we'll dig in a little bit clearly. This is not new science and a yet it's become somewhat more mainstreamed. It's I like it a little bit too like analytics and everybody's always crunch data numbers every always looked at information processed zest information but analytics kind of had. Its moneyball moment where everybody started talking about it. Brad Pitt. Brad Pitt starring in it. Everybody's talking about it and then come like this huge thing. Clearly mental skills training is becoming a lot more mainstream. Now why do you think that is what do you think brought it out into the sunlight. What do you attribute the mainstreaming of the mental skills training to honestly social media I think I think so. There's a big big apiece that I'm trying to talk about when I'm on podcast at and it's an educating piece right and it's it's the difference between mental health and mental performance right. Those are two different things so mental the health more of your your clinical psychology works so right. It's it's your depression your clinical anxiety. suicide eating disorder thing about four. That's mental health and mental performance. Formats is specific. To like onfield athletic performance or in the boardroom. Or whatever your performance is not. It doesn't have to be four but it's it's confidence. Motivation resiliency the enjoyment Composure all the things right so those are two separate things but those are both needed in whether you're a regular person who doesn't perform or whether you're a performer. In in my opinion on that is if you're alive and you are breathing and you're human. You're performing in some way shape or form if you are a dad you are performing if you're sibling. You're performing if you're are you have a job you're performing for that job And and all of those things come with that but I think the most important part and how this got out is mental health. Got Out right is that we had public figures. He had famous athletes famous actors and actresses. And all these people in the spotlight who came out and we're like. Hey I struggle with these. I have AH mental health issues. I have I'm dealing with critical anxiety or depression and making matt more mainstream and I think that had a ripple effect of once mental health else is talked about and heard about and and become a normal conversation. Those mental skills right and and like you said mental skills. I've been around for forever if you talk to some of the people in the baseball world who have been in baseball for forty fifty plus years you know they may not call it mental skills but if you have a conversation within they're talking about visualization and breathing and how to calm themselves down in pressure situations and techniques and skills that they use it just didn't have a title on it and they didn't have have somebody specifically they're working with them training them on that and actually spending time and money and effort on training the mental aspect of their game. It was Kinda like gotTA. You're the right kind of thing and so I think I think the way it exploded is the mainstream social media and mental health being out there and then people realized I think okay this is especially dominant in high pressure performers which includes you know high level professional athletes and by that we have to do something about it? We have to get some training and and I think pro sports are are kind of setting the standard on and then it the ripple down to you know college athletes and then high school athletes. It's an on down to like ten eight year old. I've worked with a nine year old before. Oh my mom but it's yeah it's it's cool though it's it's continuing to grow even like three years ago when I graduated With my master's there wasn't a lot of opportunities. And now it's probably double or triple and I think it's only going to continue to go up because more and more people are are starting to realize that we're doing everything we can physically. And we're like maxed out physically like whether it's an hour rule or physically like these athletes can't take it anymore that the only thing we can do now train mentally and so it's it's becoming more of a priority than it ever has been locking unlocking that mental mental side. That's really interesting. So do you find that. There are certain sports or certain organizations that are more open to it or is it kind of A. You're in this industry. So do you know like oh I know I know these teams are really into it and this sport is not and this is like zero kind of unspoken word on like Nick. WHO's adopting this more than others? Yeah for sure I would say I would say a major league. Baseball is probably leading Just because you know baseball game failure you know everybody knows the game.

"But it's not just with top athletes either. Every one of us has the power to tap into our mind in a different way way to frame things to look at things differently to understand our process. And there's so much more that goes into it. which is why couldn't be more excited to have on Hannah Houston Philadelphia phillies mental skills coach? And I'm telling you we're going to talk a lot about baseball. We're GONNA talk a lot about her job. We're GONNA talk a lot about how she works with players no specific players. We're GONNA talk about how she worked with players and their approach but listen to this and put it on your own lenses well listen to the processes listen to the structure listened to the ideas and the concepts and apply them to yourself. This isn't about just athletes. This is about you. Let's get into it. Here's Hanna Hi Hannah how are you today. Hi I'm doing great. How are you? I'm good release so excited to talk to you because this is a direction we haven't really head on the podcast ask before the mental skills side of the industry and what you do and working with teams and athletes. I think it's so fascinating and I'm so excited to talk to you about all. Oh that's a thank you very much for coming on. Yeah of course. I'm excited to talk about cool before we get into all your work with the phillies and all the other experiences you've had. I WANNA go back a bed. Just we can understand a little bit of your motivation. Your Start and how you got things rolling here so you were a division one athlete you played basketball and softball. Ut Chattanooga congratulations on that clearly think clearly you have a love of sports but why did you decide that it was more than just a hobby for you and something you wanted to turn into a career. And how did that process happen for you. Yeah that's a great question Keno I like. You said I've I've played my entire life. I grew up with a younger brother and so we were super competitive and my mom and dad were like do whatever play whatever you know and so we got our hands on just about every sport. We could play And I I don't know I don't know when it started but I just knew like that's when I lit up. The most right was anytime I was around sports and my passion and my enthusiasm just skyrocketed. When I was doing something with sports and so you know when you're when you're about to go into college and you're trying to figure out what are you going to study you know and you don't really know and you have big decisions to make Jake You kind of just go with what you love and the one thing I knew for sure that I love in life was sports. Yeah and so I did. My UNDERGRAD was an exercise. Diane just because I was thinking you know maybe strength and conditioning coach maybe a softball coach somehow someway being involved in sports Just I'm not really sure what it was going to be at and and trying to just keep an open mind on whatever opportunities come like in sports like that's what I WANNA do And it took a sport psychology class my senior year of Undergrad and was like what the heck is this. Why am I never heard of this? Yeah and so it was like it was like a psych one class but for sports psych And and I was obviously my career of playing almost over and I'm so mad I didn't take this my freshman in here and learn some of this and try to Implement a little bit into my own game But it was almost too late for that and so then I realized like okay. Well now I WANNA yeah no everything and anything I can about psychology and how the brain work and how it can help us perform on and off the field and be better human beings and better spouses says and better people And so I applied and got into Grad School and then I got my masters in sports psychology and motor behavior which which isn't really fancy way of how the mind and the body worked together and then their list sports psychology and motor behaviors ounce cooler. I like that. That's yeah exactly. It's it's a mouthful but it's really simple. It's just how how the brain works and how the body works. And Luckily my Undergrad. I have exercise science background. That was all the body in in how the body works and then my master's specifically focused on how the mind works with the body But it was just always been there like you know you hear people talking about jobs and how now some people love their job. Somebody will hate their jobs are not always you know. My parents always instilled in me like love what you do like every day. You know the old cliche quotas we love what you do. You never worked in your life and and I agree and disagree with that Because it is a lot of work blessed and and loving your job every day is pretty frigging awesome so I and I knew almost anything I would do in sports. I knew I would love So yeah that's that's how I got introduced. Psychology was just a random worked like one on one in class. In my Undergrad. See I love that too. There's a really cool message in there that you don't know when those moments going to happen right like the same kind of thing happened to be shared on this podcast before I started out. How does a very similar story? You sports was the place I was happy. Played it all the time I loved it. I watched it read about it. Everything and then I went to college chemistry and Biology Double Major. Like I don't know what I was doing. I was totally lost but I took like a mass meeting. took a mass media elective one year and was like. Oh my gosh this is is it. I want to get into sports television. This is the thing for me when you don't always know what's going to happen so it's Kinda cool that you are open to that important just kind of staying open in your mind opportunities. Judy's definitely and I tell people all the time you know whether you're trying to get into sports like field or whatever field you have to be open and kind of willing to go places and do things and you know. My first internship was with a Golf Academy. I've never played golf in my life. You know I've played all sports but I didn't play golf. And but the first and the first opportunity I get his golf. And so it's Kinda you know unique and I was like I am not going to say no to this because not only can I help Golfer but their mental game but I can also learn about golf and now I'm the sessile but again like that's what I everybody like be willing to move be willing to go do scary things because you're never going to know what you do like it what you don't like until you do it and then once you do like I just hopped off the phone call with somebody else or talking about you know how you actually learn more from bad experiences you no you learn like okay. I know I don't like this is how you do this. Then you good experiences where you're like okay and that was cool like but you learn what you like and what you don't like in different different experiences and and that can't happen if you say no to things if you only say yes to certain things if you only do your football player only do things with football like try other things do other other things and and be being willing to a huge part of that like there's there's no way I would be working with the phillies if I wasn't willing to do other things for interesting thing too because you hear so many people who talk about. Oh I did this internship and I didn't like it and now it's a failure running out of time and this that and the other thing and they're they're like stacking up all these decisions in their mind like they're telling themselves to failure when I'm trying to say back to them like no no no finding out what you don't like to do is just as important right like going going to experience this lately saying Whoa. I don't WanNa spend my life doing that like that's actually a win loss. Yeah absolutely and and and chances are that even though Oh you think that energy you know you don't want to do that or that's just the path is that right for you. Chances are whatever you did there learn there. You can take into what you're supposed to be doing and like even if it's something you can take away from that like no mine was My undergrad was actually science in my Birth internship internship and Undergrad was as a coach. And I'm not even close to a string coach right now but I'm a mental strength coach and so I've talked me all the time about workouts and the demands demands and I know what they're talking about when they say something like I'm like. Oh yeah I know what you mean and tell Lamar spreads and some of them are like. Oh that's awesome but it's like I can almost guarantee you that whatever you've been in through it's going to help in once you finally get to that dream job or whatever it is that you're trying to get to and figure out like don't like you said don't write it off as a failure write it off as kind kind of call them lily pads right 'cause hot from Lily Pad to Lily Pad you get to the pond and sometimes then you're in a one pond and then you have to go Lily Pad Sadler pad to another bigger pond right until you get to the pond that you want to be on but like their stepping stones and I think I think a lot of people get like discouraged because they're like what I didn't get my dream job. I didn't get this. I'm not there but it's like you're going to kind of crawl through the gross stuff back stuff. I and figure out what you like what you don't like what you do. You WanNa work with you. You don't WanNa work with. What's your niche? What's your best at? You know. You may think you're best at one thing and then maybe you're fined you're actually really good at something else and so it's it's a huge piece of it is just having an open mind. And that's not just in your career that that's in life to on athletes all the time like always having an open mind always trying to find what's the new thing you can learn. What can I grow from heard this talk before? What's one thing I can hear differently in? This offer cannot pay a little bit more attention. One new piece of advice or or one new technique right meager skill that maybe I haven't learned before it's funny. I had heard it way before. Yeah totally I visualize. You're talking to of always phillies players jumping on lily. We pads across the pond so I I'm a big digitalization guy. Now that's going to be stuck in my head all day. I'm going to be picturing like all these different athletes at different levels jumping across a leap pads. You gotTA visualize realized. That's how you spend your days. That's all done so I WANNA go back to the beginning a little bit still because I'm going to get off track here thousand times in this conversation because I'm really endeavor that you have to say and I'm just going to jump around but okay so you're a student athlete and I think this is one of the things I find extremely important and again it's kind of framing your mind around the experience where a lot of people come to me and they'll say I was a student athlete so I never had a chance to intern. So so I'm behind everybody else and I'm like no. You have a different set of skills so tell us as not only a mental skills coach but also someone who was a a student athlete. What kind of skills and things were you able to pick up and leverage and the rest of your life from just being.

"Rockies in the Philadelphia Phillies. Hi, everybody, Jack Corgan along with Jerry, Schimmel producer engineer. Jesse thomas? Doug Niemeier at master control. Rockies have taken another step towards the racing that game losing streak with a dramatic fifth straight win last night. It's an opportunity when you're trying to build momentum to have an emotional game. Really be a propellant. Exactly. Right. And I think that that can be great great momentum for any team in any sport. Jack is to have that great dramatic finished like the Rockies had last night. It just seems to get everybody going. And I know the old saying is momentum is only taking spars the next day starting pitcher. But you've got one of those on the mound today as well. And in a Tonio sends it tell who is off to a great startling one start. But it was impressive. But yeah, I think a game last night so many elements of it that. Dramatic walk off and the situation down a run. And all that then you come back and win a game. You think you lose can really get a team going and a terrific it bat by Tony Wolters down count to draw walk to be that guy on the basis for Charlie Blackman's home. Run the Phillies are dinged up. More guys went down last night. So the Rockies have chance to capitalize on a team. That's trying to refined its footing exactly right to up little bit physically in their pitching staff, including air Knowle's, not been terribly effective so far. So I think he might be catching this Philadelphia team at the right time for the Rockies. And let's hope that is the case tonight and tomorrow, but it looks like that certainly is the case you look at their lineup. It's still a very good lineup with mccutchen and Harper and Hoskins and real Muto and smothers, but the Rockies have them down. Let's hope they can keep them down Rockies Phillies. We'll take a quick break in when we come back. We'll visit with Tom McCarthy. The voice of the film. Please. And talk about the resurgence in baseball in Philadelphia next on the KOA Rockies.

"Cantina hero CBS sports radio is out preparing to do the Saint John's Arizona state game, which is a first four game tomorrow afternoon sampler and be in and BT probably have a little bit of wager on that one. But we'll we'll deal with that. When we start talking about the NC double A a field and in our next hour with Seth Davis, as I mentioned before L, we we know that Bryce Harper just signed his big deal as well to say or go to the Philadelphia Phillies and right after that there was speculation about really what he what what they were going to build. How are they gonna build around him Phillies? I think. Ready to win. But but Bryce had some interesting comments regarding the now signed Mike trout, even though he didn't mention Mike trout by name. They are making twenty six years something like that. So I think that's going to be able to bring some other guys in as well to help this organization win. I know there's another guy in about two years comes up off the books. We'll see what happens with them. Yeah. Ninety more. He's not coming off the books. But it makes me ask the question and wonder if the Los Angeles angels heard that, and I know they rose rose raise a little bit of a stink about being tampered with not too much of one. But they raise a little bit of a stink about it. I wonder if that precipitated them to do this Mike trout deal now 'cause they didn't have to do it right now. There was two years remaining as Bryce alluded to two years remaining on Mike trout's previous deal, which was one hundred and forty four million. It was a preoccupation deal. They gave him a ton of money, and he was about twenty four million dollars a year before they had to. So they keep. Signing him before they have to. I think that's in part just the business that already Merano believes in if you if you have a guy you love him, he fits your family culture family, meaning the baseball culture there your everybody feels like they're on the same page. Why wait what do the deal and sometimes that's gotten people in in trouble? But it also makes me ask the question. If the Phillies sold Bryce Harper on the fact that they were going to go get another superstar, and the reason that your deal is sub thirty million dollars a year is because we need to save space to go get the next stood or another study to sit alongside of you. And so as I sit night, you know, we marvel at this four hundred thirty million dollars that Mike trout is going to get over the next twelve years. I wonder if Bryce Harper is having signers regret right now. Probably not because the Phillies have enough of a of a team built around him to be beat be viable, and they feel exciting and they're on the and and things of that nature. But I think Bryce gotten to the mindset that we started to see in the basketball world where you you've. You've you sign a big deal. You commit yourself to to one team and bars. Harper is committed to the Philadelphia Phillies through for the rest of his career. That's one of the reasons he said it took so long. And once you do that you start saying, okay? How can we or I when a championship? How can I get to the postseason and be spectacular and drive up my brand and and drive up the popularity of the team that I'm with and bike tension me. And we're going to be living the high life, don't like the NBA. Does it NBA has guys at hang out in the off season banana boats and craft? Ideas on what team they're going to play for. I think Bryce Harper might have been trying to do that. Obviously he was trying to do that why so blatantly that was his introductory press conference. Was it like a week and a half later that was when he first got introduced to the Phil as a Philadelphia Philly new Philadelphia, Philly the one thing that he's thinking about as who else. He's going to bring to join him. So I think Bryce Harper's is probably the most disappointed man in baseball right now. Obviously this other guys out there judge will come up at some point and some others. But there's there's not a ton of them that are going to be free. Manny Machado is in San Diego for probably the rest of his career Nelson aren't auto. He's not going anywhere anytime soon. I mean, Nolan known are not going anywhere anytime soon like who's he who's he going to pair himself with right now. It's interesting when you think about this the back stories of the stories that are not being told. The behind the scenes with the Philadelphia Phillies in the in the Los Angeles angels. But again at the end of the day, I think this is a great deal for my trout. I think it's a great deal for for the angels. And I'm wondering if if if Bryce Harper's quasi tampering with my trout is what ultimately got this thing done, a sooner rather than later. I think the answer would would would be. Yes. Now, I dug into some of the attendance out at angel stadium. Expected because they've been they've been sub five hundred last couple of years eighty and eighty two over the last two seasons, which is not. It's not great. It's not it's not horrible. It's not like they're sitting at the bottom. And and they're not worth going to see. But I just remember seeing a lot of the highlights from Mike trout's year last year, and the stands don't look for doesn't look like there's a ton of interest because the team's not building towards anything every year. We talk about you know, God they gotta get some pitching out there. And when when when social was the skip it was extremely we talked to him every single year skip when you're going to get some some arms, and they just kept running up against bad luck. But despite the perception that the angels are are, you know, an underachieving team people go to these games their sixth in major league baseball and average attendance over three million attendees of the ballpark every single year thirty-seven thousand a game top five or top. Six in major league baseball. And I feel like one of the reasons that Mike trout is so valuable to this organization is because through these lean times, he's the guy that keeps you going until Santer, and I were having this conversation. Is it worth it? I understand that. You could understand that. Yes. The angels make a ton of money. And the teams value has risen almost tenfold in since already Marito bought the team. But is it really worth it? The bring it to pay a guy like Mike, trout, thirty six or so million dollars a year to me, it is because what makes it interesting for fans on losing teams is if there's one or two, and I think there's more than a couple of for the Los Angeles angels right now, there's a feel like it. But there are Calhoun is a pretty good player. Right. Shohei Otani who did something that no player is done in decades being a two-way guy as a pitcher starting pitcher in a in a in a big bad. There's interest for this angels team. And by committing yourself to Mike trout for as long as they've committed themselves to Mike trout, you know, that you're going to have the best player in the game on your team. Now, you might lose some of these games. You may go to go to the ballpark, and it's, you know, four to three and you lose, but you know, Mike Trump's gonna be entertaining entertaining to you. And there's something to that. Right. Baseball, really all sport is about winning. But it's also. Also about being entertained, and I think having a guy like Mike trout who says humble and his straightforward and as as hard working and a non issue related as any player in all of sport is something that fans can embrace. And so, yeah, it's might take some time. I take a couple of years, maybe even more before the Los Angeles angels are relevant in the postseason discussion. But to me that doesn't matter. I think when you go when you know, you're going to have lean timed, and you're building you're trying to build around a guy. Mike trout is the perfect guy to do that around. And the angels found their guy and be honest with you with league revenues continuing to grow up getting the early discount. So to speak might have been the best thing that they could have done it. Honestly, I believe that some people will knock this because long-term deals to sluggers don't always. Work. I mean, the the history is is long hell the angels don't have to look too far in their recent past define them. Josh hamilton. Remember that the buckle that happened with him though, obviously that was because dust Hamilton had disease a substance abuse issue that he couldn't he he couldn't ever shake and it derailed his career. But Alex Rodriguez that Dylan workout that's great for the Rangers Robinson. Can we know what that did for the Seattle Mariners? They actually played better when he got hurt last year Giancarlo Stanton. The Marlins basically gave him the half the value of the franchise before they shipped them off to the New York Yankees. What was good for the Yankees? He wasn't a world beater album pools. Also with with the with the angels, he's being paid for the next four five years four years or so before he falls off to be three years before he falls off the angels books Maguy Cabrera he can pay these forty one he signed two deals basically sixteen years and four hundred million. He signed with the Detroit Tigers these. Things don't always work out for winning. But I think in this case, maybe this one case might trout might prove to be the exception to the rule when it comes to these enormous contracts that are certainly outliers relative to the other contracts and major league baseball, Mike trout, gives me hope that this one this time may might work. Not maybe also. But I am have holding out hope that this works out for the Los Angeles angels inbounds and out of bounds coming up next. But before that, Jack, I mean, can you please give us an update?.

"Us. And with Bryce Harper inking a massive thirteen year contract with the Philadelphia Phillies, the final major free agent domino has certainly fallen after Machado sign with the San Diego Padres earlier in the off season. But there is a new book about all thirty and LB franchises that has certainly caught my interest. And I think if you're a baseball fan, you will certainly be interested and picking up a copy of this book the book is now taking the field. Baseball's all time Dream Team's for all thirty franchises. The author of the book is Tom stone. And he joins us now here on espionage nation radio town. Appreciate your time this afternoon. How are you? Doing well, Jake, thanks for having me on. So what inspired you to write the book? I mean to go through all thirty franchises and come up with the dream team for each franchise. I can't even imagine how long that probably has taken you. Well, I grew up in the seventies and eighties in western New York. And I think you will spend some time in western New York yourself. And you know that the winters can be pretty brutal up here. And obviously you can't play baseball year round. And so even as a kid in the early eighty I was thinking about the hall of fame who should be in who should be out. You know, I'd spend time with some simulation games and things like that a lot like a lot of big baseball fanatics do in for a long time. I just thought, you know, who should be on, you know, who would be the starting lineup for the for the Red Sox for the pirates. Whatever team I was thinking of that that day fast forward a little bit nine nineteen ninety nine. I finally got started writing the book, and it's been almost twenty years now in the making I pick it up put it down start again, use different stats and finally glad to just get it out there and published. Wow. That's unbelievable. So, you know, I think when you look at a team like the Yankees, you got to go through all of their all time great players. But then you also have a team let's say like the Tampa Bay rays of the Miami Marlins. They don't exactly have the long history of a team like the Yankees or the Red Sox or the cubs which was harder for you trying to decide the all time teams for a great franchise like the Yankees or maybe a team like the Miami Marlins, or you know, a team like the. Raise. I just mentioned where they don't exactly have that history. So you're kind of picking and choosing who you want to put on the all time team. Yeah. So there's two ways I like to answer that because I've I've gotten that question. A few time certainly take longer for the sixteen longstanding teams the American League wants to go back to nineteen o one or the National League wants to go back to the eighteen hundred takes longer lot more players to look at. But some of the players selections are just so easy. And so obvious Babe Ruth Mickey Mantle players like that for the Yankees. "Your Zona pot away. I just saw this. You know, Bryce Harper signed that megadeal this week with the Philadelphia Phillies three hundred and thirty million dollars over thirteen years, which is ridiculous. Because by the time the end of that contract reaches its end. I would be shocked if Bryce Harper is someone that is contributing in a meaningful way to the Philadelphia Phillies or whomever assumes that contract through trade. But be that as it may. Since thursday. I just saw this. It was it was just tweeted since Thursday. And by the way, I should probably give it some gravitas or just some context. He was by Jim Salisbury who works for NBC sports in Philadelphia. Anyway, he treats since Thursday when the deal was announced the Philadelphia Phillies organization has sold one hundred and eighty thousand tickets for games this year. Now, let's just for the moment. Let's just do. Let's just have a little fun here with the math for a moment. Let's just let's say the average ticket price for Philadelphia Phillies game is thirty dollars. That seems low to me, but let's just say it's thirty. There would be obviously tickets that would go for much more. And there would be some that might be lasted depends on discounts. It depends on where you see all of the stuff that you factor in when you buy a ticket any sporting event. But let's just say for the moment. The average ticket price in Philadelphia is thirty dollars hundred and eighty thousand tickets sold since Thursday. Since thursday. They've sold three point nine million dollars in tickets. Now, Harper's the money. He's going to make is is is crazy this year. I mean, he's got I think he's got twenty million dollars salary this year in up front bonus of I don't I don't. Here's a ten million dollar salary this year and a twenty million dollars signing bonus paid in two instalments. He's going to make this year alone thirty million dollars. But they're more than ten percent down the road to paying this thing off. After thursday. I, you know, again stars sell tickets, and I don't know if they'll ever be able to recoup what they're paying Bryce Harper in real dollars. But it just shows the enthusiasm in a market the size of Philadelphia for star player. And it just makes you wonder again. What what Harper WI Harper wasn't embrace bore financially by the nationals, and frankly, why the dodgers didn't presume now. The dodgers outfield is pretty damn good. But remember they cleared the decks when they took on Homer Bailey. And they said all of these players out here to Cincinnati. The idea was there clearing the decks financially to be able to sign Bryce Harper. And of course, they didn't he signed with the Philadelphia Phillies. Very interesting. Are you faithful inside your marriage? If fidelity inside of anything is not just confined to one thing. And when people think, well, he he was unfaithful and his marriage. You know, he was out running around with Trixie while mom was at home with the kids or vice versa. It happens. The other one too. But are you faithful financially inside your mouth? I saw this just the other day twenty percent of us Americans. Maybe not you maybe not me with twenty percent of Americans are in relationships and are committing financial infidelity. And it's more common than you think and baby boomers, which would be people my age. Maybe you.

"My truck to his credit will inevitably it will evidently be one of them. That's what we're talking about here. It can't be ignored. It's just that simple. Right. Congratulations to him Philadelphia Phillies. I think definitely will be better than they were last year. We will see what happens, but I will say this. They appear to be hesitancy on a part of Bryce Harper's willingness to sign his deal with the Philadelphia Phillies when he has his press conference, whether it'd be clear probably Clearwater, Florida spring training. He needs to make sure everyone is fully aware. That he was just in negotiations. You do not want to give the city of Philadelphia the impression that you didn't wanna be because first of all Bryce is going to have a rough enough because inevitably all of them go to a slump, and when his love arrives Philadelphia ain't going to be kind. Trust me with these amount of dollars. It comes with expectations. Philadelphia don't play around. I'm here right now. Tell you what I know Philadelphia. Don't play. I worked in the city for seventeen years. I'm not bragging, but I was a preeminent voice in the city for the vast majority of that time, I noticed city is a second home to me. I am telling you what I know. This town will be merciless if this man does not live up to expectations. I'm just let y'all know. So just keep that in mind. But I also want to say it was a good deal on the part of the Philadelphia Phillies to get those years to get him at that number to not compromise. Your future plans to pursue future free agency to keep some of your talent intact while making sure to not necessarily trigger that luxury tax number..

"Out why Machado is getting an offer around one hundred seventy five million. When many believe BUSTER that he could get a deal at or near three hundred million when this process started. Laura Bryce Harper Manny Machado or superstars, but because of what they're looking for in contracts. There are just simply not a high volume of bidders. We know that the Philadelphia Phillies are involved in conversations with both Harper and Machado. And the question is are the Phillies playing those two players off each other. The Yankees were involved in Manny Machado, but they never actually made an offer and they have since moved on site Troy to wit skiing, DJ LeMay you, and then we had the White Sox offer that I reported yesterday in fairness his agent, Dan Lozano has said that that report is inaccurate and reckless. But now we have questions moving forward. Do the Yankees seeing where the market is a child. How do they jump back into this and try to make a deal the White Sox? Add more to their offer. Is there some mystery team hanging out there or to the Phillies simply take one of the two players or maybe even both players in Machado and Harper a great opportunity seems to have appeared for the Phillies? Yeah. Bus or the plot could be. Thickening you mentioned Harper. What is the latest with him? I look it feels like that this situation is going to drag on deep into February the way that the JD Martinez situation is he's talking with the Phillies. We know that he had an offer on the table at the end of last regular season from the Washington nationals. But when you call around you try to find out what are the teams are involved. I got I got admit I'm coming up empty on that, and that's why among agents baseball executives. There's a lot of fun conversation speculation about whether or not there could be a mystery team that emerges like we've seen in so many situations in the past. All right. Thanks much.
