Lifeguard Shortages Will Keep Some Philadelphia Pools From Reopening

"Pools are opening for the first time in two years. But due to a lifeguard hiring shortage, about a third of the city's pools were not able to open this summer. Robbie Broad from member station W. H Y Y has more from opening day in Philadelphia. James Finnegan playground in Southwest Philly. The sun beats down on the hottest day of the season to date, with temperatures nearly reaching 100 degrees. Dozens of kids scream and cannonball into the deep end, exploding through the calm blue water inside the first full to reopen in the city. Aleah Adams is splashing around in the shallow end. And yeah, just a bit too, man. I've come to this school a lot and I go to the wreck so not alive last year, her mom say to atoms struggled to find activities from Malaya. So she's excited that now the city's kids have a safe place to cool off people. Um out of trouble on the street. They could be here. Swim. Who'll down ain't gotta be hot. So, yeah, I do think it's good. This year. Lifeguard recruitment was especially difficult since Phillies Parks and Recreation Department was unable to use its usual strategies in high schools across the city. To attract more lifeguards. The city increased wages to $15 an hour conducted a media campaign urging people to apply and had virtual job fairs. The department attributed the hiring problems to a national trend of lifeguard shortages. Laura Hernandez is a new lifeguard. Today is her first day ever on the lifeguard stand. She's excited to hit the water this year since she spent last year rehabbing a torn A C L. It's nice being back, you know, like being able to have everyone swim and having my summer. Ultimately, the city was able to hire about 60% of the lifeguards needed enough to staff about 70% of the city's 68 ports. Philadelphia Parks and Recreation Commissioner Catherine not Level admits it was difficult to decide which neighborhoods could reopen their pools. We're really proud

"These are some of the all time great in the history of the game. You've been following it and covered it for a while. And you grew up as a big baseball fan. Did anyone of the passing of the great that we've lost over the last couple months hit more hard at home for you than any of the others? You know, it's appreciate you asking that question because it's it's one that we just can't get away from because every time you try to forget all the tragedy of the year we lose another Hall of Famer. Like most recently, any guarantee. I'd say a couple things, Joey, Um, as you said, Yes, I grew up a huge sports fan, a huge baseball fan. Specifically, even though I live in Southern California, now specifically I grew up in the great State of Michigan. Huge Tigers fan. Listen, Durning har well every night. What alkaline passed last last April. You know that that hit I mean, K line even up is old as he was. He always carried himself with grace and class, and it was in great shape and He was almost to the end and in uniforms during spring training at times in Lakeland, and I always loved going through Lakeland, Florida, stopping to see the Tigers and seeing out K lines locker in the clubhouse and seeing him in uniform. You know that hit and then, of course, most recently Hank Aaron hit You know, I mean, Aaron is Like, um Like Jim Palmer said their hall of Famers and then there are Hall of Famers. And you know what? Palmer's a Hall of Famer himself, but you know, you get what he met. I mean, there's certain guys, I can't hear it. Willie Mays that are at the top that You know when you lose Hank Aaron. I mean, it's not just baseball. It's on American hero, a civil rights. I can, and that was tough. And you know the hits just keep comin. I mean, one thing. I'll use your question here too real quick. Throw in as well. We lost it in the baseball writers world We've lost a few. And today yesterday we lost Mel Antonen covered for a long time for USA Today. He was a friend of many of us. Mateo is such a good heart and a friendly face in the press box. And you know, some of us in the writer's world are reeling from that loss just in the last 24 hours. And, you know, I was talking to a friend of mine and Jody. That's one thing about this pandemic. I think that the longer we're in it, it hits home more and more. It seems like with all these Hall of Famers we lost and just talking baseball world. I've lost a bunch of friends, Writer scouts in the Hall of Famers. And this stuff keeps coming in waves in the promise. We're all like isolated at home in like with You know so much being canceled, like even concerts. It's like we keep this sadness. The sad events keep accumulating. And there's not the happier events out there like hey, we're going to see Jimmy Buffett next week or whatever it is, there's not that stuff available that balances the sadness, so it just seems like the sad events. Like these deaths you're talking about just they keep piling up, and they become such a heavy burden to carry And then Tommy Lasorda passing. They had a private service for him and Dodger Stadium a couple weeks ago, and I saw it. I just saw red a little bit about it. But Normal times. I mean, Tommy Lasorda would have. They would have had a huge celebration and Dodger Stadium of his life and you know it would have been packed and fans could have gone on in just that communal aspect of everybody getting together would have Helped him solidify Tommy's legacy and and help lift up everybody else. But We can't do that right now. And that's I think what more than anything really, really becomes burdensome. Your point is an excellent one. I was here in Philadelphia when Ricky aspirin past decade ago, whatever it was They had a public viewing in a major Philadelphia park, where just for hours, fans lined up to be able to just go past and make their last sentiments known to Ashbourne in his family and the like. It went on for hours and hours and hours and hours because he was such a popular figure in the city of Philadelphia would have been exactly the same for Tommy Lasorda in L. A. And it's a tragedy on top of the tragedy that something like that couldn't be had At this time. Scott has always great stop. Appreciate it whenever you come on. Thanks for we're hopping aboard. You know, we talked plenty is we get that much closer to spring training. I look forward to it. Jody, do you in the listeners Stay safe. Stay healthy, Happy New year and you know, don't make it a drinking game or anything, but, you know, think of me was you watch the Super Bowl of study. Telecasters. Another path? No, it's not the Scott Miller. You heard I'm with Jodie Mack last night catching a pass from Tom Brady. That's his distant far away, cousin. Scott Miller here with us on CBS portrayed. All right joining that quitting time out. Come back. Get the phone tree stoked. If you wanna go baseball, we can. We can keep going to football. I'm going back and forth between little hockey little MBA here tonight. Get aboard my phone lines right now. 855 to 124227. Jordy, Mac's son. They get together right here on CBS Sports Radio. The soothing scent of Vicks vapor rub. It's only one of the most iconic smells ever that cooling, comforting scent. Generations of families have come to trust to help them feel better. And now you trust to soothe your family. Pick up some Vicks vapor. Rub in the little blue jar and wrap yourself with the com on Lee Vicks vapor rub can bring.

"Way since December you ready for this thirty seven horses have died at Santa Anita I mean what is going on the first let's go back to the three horses dying in three days I mean it's already notorious I have spent time at this race track and I cannot believe it I think I've mentioned this before that my cousin is like my second cousin John service was the trainer for Smarty Jones who almost won the Triple Crown it was a horse out of Philadelphia park and then I have another cousin who's a trainer Jason he's had some great horses and there is some controversy with him at a horse had this past Kentucky Derby this past year but other fringe side of my family meeting cousins and a second uncle and all that are into horse racing and I kind of grew up a little bit around it and understand it somewhat and this is the I mean this is just ridiculous here's the deal the sport is already get a black eye all over the place anyway and is is pardon the pun dying and besides the horses which we care about the most I mean it is because of Indian casinos other interests and a lack of interest other than the big races and sandy need it is a popular track but not so popular now five deaths since December twenty six the scheduled start of this season so because of rain the actual start date was the twenty eighth six horses died through this state last year thirty died overall during the winter and spring meets and there wasn't a catastrophic poor single horse break down that's been one of the criticisms that wasn't that on Friday there was a secure old gelding that had a broken ankle after running a race then there was Saturday another five year old gelding but the similar ankle injury in the stretch they were turf races they had to be put down Sunday's metallic he was the first on the main dirt track racing seats so far the racing season so you've had turf problems obviously the safety of the dirt track has to be an issue what are the medical rules what what is happening the use of lay sick the riding crop all that is is what is what is happening with the break down here now the horse racing there's a horse racing integrity act which is this push in Congress they're hoping to create a body that would ever see medication all tracks and other oversight issues here Gail politics jumping into this game politics of a different sort but it there's not big support for it because they're not specific on how they're going to implement it week hello welcome welcome to the world of vague politics to get Gavin Newsom the governor and Dianne Feinstein have been the senator from California Democrat is I've been critical of the worst S. I'm gonna actually agree with them on that and they said that if improvements are made the sport could be in jeopardy I hate to tell them both knock knock it's already in jeopardy you had not have this year so they're they're talking about the possibility of an amendment that could be placed on the California ballot that would outlaw horse racing in the past eight in the state however right now there there's no indication that the anti horse racing factions have the signatures to get on the ballot can you imagine if they do so shame on the support for not figuring this out as fast as they could accidents happen but thirty seven race horses dying at Santa Anita Park that is more than unacceptable without room rate yes that that's happening they have to do task that the veterinarian is there they got a quick question and check over and over and over again and of course what is a look like to the public like you just spit the animal out and you just take their lives that's it I have a feeling of very bad feeling in California is is that a couple of premier tracks that they could get that on the ballot eventually and they could they could be in horse racing so I say to horse racing are you watching what's happening in this country you better get your act together and fast whatever it takes if I'm Runnin Santa Anita it's a nightmare I'm figuring this out now now you had not.

"That's a good point in Philadelphia. Eh thirty parks and recreation centers are outfitted with a small speaker called quote Ed. You'll love this mark the mosquito cute right players a constant high pitched ringing noise all night long and only turn it on certain time in order to keep people out of the park but only that people are the only the teenagers and young adults can hear anyone over the age of twenty five is supposed to be we supposed to be immune because basically their ear cells have started to die off so we have what we're trying to do is keep the older criminals in the park. Is that the idea evidently yes. We only want a specific range of criminal criminal activity to work yeah. That's pretty amazing. I'm not sure that I think that this is a terrible idea. I I can understand that Philadelphia Park officials of Begin <hes> have been installing the devices. The problem was AH two thousand fourteen years said sorry I think the problem is is the government's own parks theirselves an idea if this was a private park in her lots of them across the United States. This is some radical notion by any stretch of the imagination. If this was a private park administered by I say you know the Organization for the betterment of <hes> Philadelphia's southern South Western side or whatever the hell it it would be right <hes> then they put up a device that I don't know makes it so people under the age of twenty ninety five. Don't want to be in the park from what it's turned on. It say nine PM to win. It's turned off say nine A._M.. Or whatever the situation is I don't know then I wouldn't have a problem with that at all all the device that I have a problem with. It's the ownership of the park that I have a problem. If that makes sense it does make sense wherever I go the phones where we've got Mason Callanan from Lynchburg Mason. You're on free talk live. What's on your mind? Hey the question about the political situation nowadays what makes the Democrats think they've got any real good competition or anything against Donald Trump right now what makes them. They're going to win two thousand twenty. You'd have to ask one of them. Yeah I think that I mean I tend to just basically agree with you that that the more or less they need to come up with new ideas for their campaigns and the newest ideas that they they can come up with our sort of like the universal basic income and paying off college dead and you know sort of the same things that Bernie had written large yeah I mean I don't know I wouldn't call it socialism but Bernie Sanders there's does so his I don't have a problem using that terminology. I mean I mean if one of them were just not raised their hand. When everybody raises are can he would have a better chance of winning the primary and maybe perhaps the presidential candidate if one Democrat was more moderate was more in the middle ground? That's all the cake for him to be a all the primary minimally don't you think that Joe Biden is more that middle ground candidate. Jill Biden got the whole way Joe Biden. Here's the thing with Joe Biden and everybody knows good along until that he his reputation has marred him. He's to call same things many times and that could used against him up on got caught Ukraine. I mean there's a lot of weird things going on with Joe Biden. I really am root for Joe Biden because I feel bad for the rest of him but Joe Biden is the one that could probably lose by like you know thirty seventy donald trump at least thirty percent so a major victory for trump here guys unless they come up with some better than Joe Biden disagreement you so Schultz he was the CEO of of was at starbucks. Yes starbucks. He's been making noises of running as a Democrat the guy who just don't recently. I don't know if he has jumped in. I don't put on hold..

"Game the studio Elliott Marty Jones begun giving credit. It wasn't even a question that takes off the words, and I know for fact, there were some name writers, you know, one very well known. Rider who probably affected the running of the Belmont when he wrote against him. But I I think there was some conversation between that writer and John service at that rider. Jerry belly wanted to ride smarty Jones, not I think some conversations of place, and you gotta give John granted stuck with. To you know. And I just thought that the only mistake maybe pending in may, you know, staying up here in the wintertime when that horse shit, you know, I know I got family of here. But it's not alone time. I'd have to be going. I'm going to Florida for this winter, you know, and and try to maintain connection with the worst down there because you're right down there. And maybe it would've turned out different. But you know, I've made mistakes that route my career were I was very comfortable. My my comfort zone was keystone, Philadelphia, park and parts and never left when I had opportunity to ride for different trainers. I wrote orders for LeRoy jolly, I wrote orange his rank white league browley Juergens and at virginity at one eighty nine yards and my comfort zone and were of several other reasons was stay in that t- stone Philadelphia park. And maybe Frankie decided I'm gonna stay where I'm most comfortable, and I've had the most experience of success. But I think Frankie maybe could feel the deal. He says. Says I'm going to Florida for the winter. I mean, what are you going to miss days like this on horses in the morning? What are you going to miss, you know, days cancelation, and maybe a bunch of winners, but you'll take and you'll you'll you'll maintain probably contact with Maximus mischief and stay on. And you know what? You'll also advertise yourself. Well, if you just had moderate success when you go to Florida at this time of year, even with all the heavy has down there. If you have moderate success, nobody expecting you like the world on fire have maters excess winsome raises put your name out there. Probably wind up having contact with other known trainers. You know, it would have done his his business. Good. I don't know. What influencing just to stay up here. Whether is agent Bobby Marquel? Didn't wanna let him go. Or you know, he could have maintained contact with Bobby. When it came back. But he also could go into Florida and gotten a Florida Jin. I'm sure somebody taking that's well known down. There. Frankie should have gone to Florida. That's my take on it. But as a my take on it is those owner should stop waiting. It's a very it's very difficult. Scenario. We we bring up Jeremy rose Johnny Rotem that day in the in the rebel. And then rose was back. He then wrote on the rest of his career. And you know, I I know there's people that. That will say. Rose may have made a mistake in the derby in going as close down inside is he did, you know, which might not have been the best part of of the racetrack. And that you know that Alex kind of bogged down late in that race. You know, obviously, there's people that are going to continue to critique Stuey regarding smarty Jones in the Belmont, the other horse that comes to mind who did. Stick with with a writer through the season lawyer run, and and John Mckee. Bob Holtus until until lawyer, Ron. Moved to the Pletcher and then at that point Mckee Makita ride from that point. But Bob old. This was was undeterred the he was writing John Mckee, no matter what on on lawyer, Ron I remember that was also a, you know, a quote unquote regional writer that and didn't we have we had this with? We had this with the good Philly withstand with Stanley gold with. Oh my gosh. With awesome. Feather. Who was the writer down there? The from Florida that. You know, everybody was trying to buzz around to get him knocked off had Stanley wouldn't wouldn't hear of it? Yeah. You know, you gotta get people. Greg it when they do stick with the right?.

"A health insurance plan, and it wouldn't be an be very little contribution needed by the jockey. They don't I don't even know exactly what they're doing with that. Because as of two years ago, when I was more active that two hundred fifty thousand wasn't covering the jockeys that were considered Philadelphia park jockeys, you know, and at one point, of course, when the Gill went belly up we formed in organization over there that the Molina myself and how Vega and we formed a five oh one C three organization called philadel-. Part jockeys. And then we had access to that two hundred fifty thousand we used it for help and joins on the disability policy. Tracks also carry a disability policy. I think it's a hundred and fifty dollars a month after seven days believe of maybe it's after first day of accident, but you can't apply for it right away. But I don't really dollars. I mean one hundred dollars a week. I mean what what's that do? I mean, it's just that does very little and disability accident accident. Disability insurance for jockeys is very high. You know, I it's hard to come by health insurance is high for everybody. And we just hope that no one's stains. Very, you know, catastrophic injury 'cause a million dollars. As you stated earlier a million dollars doesn't go that far talking about catastrophic injury. I mean paralysis spinal head injuries that nature. Eat a million dollars in in what couple of months month at their hospitals between surgery and all that go with rehabilitation rehabbing, you know, when you talk about paralysis rehab on a person for paralysis and the equipment and the things that they need to have is tremendous expense million dollars. Doesn't mean anything anymore and health insurance? What what are the we're gonna talk to Neil Howard to the Neal speaking BF Roddy, McKenzie the exercise rider that was badly hurt down in New Orleans. Tony how to how to exercise riders how do they make it? What have how can they there's as much risk for them in some ways? It's even more dangerous because the mornings there can be you know, there's way more orces on the track during training hours than there are in races. And you're exposed to just as much chance. Absolutely. If not because John my right five day, you know during the raised on them for you manage that you off. We're an exercise rider dealing with ten fifteen horses the morning, you know, now the thing about it is is there under fowleri he in the workmen's comp stage because they're under salary workman's comp will cover them and compo cover them. I think in other state and just about everything if if they're under salary, but there are so many, and you know, being under salary everything has to be above board. You know to be paying tax taken taxes out. They have to show they are employed by that trainer. And then workman's comp oh cover. They're not big Sittard, independent contractors in states that don't cover independent contractor. But so many of these exercise personnel. You know, they're going from barn to barn, the undesirably that no one. And and there are not covered as independent contractors in states that don't have workman's comp of like the there. Considered the same as jockey that that isn't covered by workmen's comp. If you're an independent contractor in those states like in Pennsylvania, you're an independent contractor. You're not covered whether you're at the size, boy or jockey. So they're really, you know, a disadvantage when it comes to their coverage because they're an independent contractor. I, you know, independent contractor you can say why and go and so many of them don't don't buy health insurance. And and be responsible for.
