"If I were, maybe I wouldn't want to listen to these playlists and listen to a bunch of new songs because I'd be young and I would be experiencing new things. I would say yes, I'm making this music my entire personality now. As I did then. But it's now X number of years later, that music is still my personality. I want to hear the music that I listen to a decade plus ago. That is the only thing that I want. I do not want to playlist. I do not want suggestions. I want to hear the same songs that I've already heard, possibly you could remix them and blend them together. That's cool. No new music. But I guess that's a problem for Spotify. That I don't want to listen to the new things. Well, so underneath that is the real problem for Spotify is that you listening to hits from the 90s over and over again. Does not actually make those artists any money. And maybe it shouldn't, right? Like in the CD era you would buy that CD, you would listen to it for the rest of your life. That artist would not get money every time you listen to a CD. But they got a lot of money up front for the CD, right? And that usually sustained most artists. Now it's like the game that they're all playing is like pennies forever. So Spotify has a lot of incentive to make their catalog artists or like the catalog artists from major labels happy. Because no one is getting the big dollars up front. They're all just getting pennies over time. But they still have to break new artists into breaking artists. You got to shove them people's faces all the time. You got to break new songs. And I think all of this stuff is in a real tension with the other piece of what they announced, which is an emphasis on video podcasts and showing you little clips of video podcasts in the feed as you scroll. Because that is just a jarring transition from like, here's the hook of a song, here's the hook of a song. Do you like this playlist over here? Here's three people talking about whatever. Which is admittedly what we do here. Hi guys. And we'll probably figure out how to get involved in that on Spotify. But there's a lot of stuff. There's a lot of business models. They're trying to cram into one experience. But this is the magic of TikTok. Like, that thing you just described is the thing that has made tiktoks so powerful, which is that it can be wrong about what you're going to be interested in. 9 out of ten times and TikTok that endless vertical scrolling thing with video and sound is like immersive enough even when you don't care about what it is that it keeps you scrolling. And that's like, that's the magical thing that TikTok solved is most of the time you don't care about the thing that's being shown to you, but the price of TikTok being wrong is so low because the scrolling experience is so fun that you will just keep scrolling even when you don't care about the content. Like the activity is enough. And what that gave TikTok permission to do was just shove stuff you don't care about in your face all the time to see what hits. And everyone is copying that for exactly that same reason, right? Like that's what Facebook is trying to do. They're like, are you interested in this? And you say, no, I know what about this and you say no, and they're like, what about this? And they'll just do that. And Facebook can't figure it out. Is it girls? One bikini girl, no matter what at all times. And I'm like, no, no, no, it's trucks jumping over stuff. I want to be very clear about this. I literally typed the words into the search box. And every couple of weeks, I was like, I don't know. Just one thing that'll make your wife mad. Mine is a blooper in the office. It's just like when in doubt, TikTok just show me bloopers from the office, and we're cool again. Everything's fine. But no, but that's the thing. And that's why you do that extra visual thing because it's just constant. There's just so much going on in a way that like, if you show me 8 seconds of silence at the beginning of a song on a playlist or like a slow building guitar, people are out. But if you just play loud noise over and over again as a scroll, that's gonna keep me engaged. Okay, so the 70s music in the 70s. That's when we started getting the long guitar solos and stuff. Before that, in the 40s and 50s, Phil Spector horrible man did now. But he made the wall of sound, right? He was coming to him. Did you play Russian roulette in the lady died? It was not great. Unbelievable. Dude, wore a cape to record music, but in the face and 60s, where in his little cape, he created a whole new way of listening to music, which was just blast it into your ears on every single, like he was like, I'm gonna make it really, really loud, because everybody's just listening on radio. And so the louder it is, the more they'll be likely to sit around and listen, which is why we have The Beach Boys, but also all of those great bops from the early 60s. had a cardiac arrest Right And they recess hated him Good And he said to me if you know God forbid is the only thing again Do you want it Do you want a DNR Yes I want him to have all the chances because everybody is praying for him Okay And we've been together a long time And he said they're going to do another type of operation where they're going to go in and inside again with the scope or something And I forgot what he said They're going to look at all of the angles inside The abdomen and all of that And they're going to make sure maybe they'll find something else which is causing the other bleeding That's so scary that they don't know why And so he said that once they do that they're just going to close it up They're going to I forgot what he said they're just going to tape it up close it up So nothing else can get out of here And he said that they're going to do everything He's got round the clock everybody's there And he's the ventilator is just to keep him breathing And he wants to get him on his stomach So they could do something else And you know he's going to be under But I forgot you know all the technical terms That's okay And I said I want you to do everything because I said doctor everybody Everybody is praying And I said even while he came up and he says you're doing wonderful he says everything And he says we'll call you And he says but your husband is very very sick man because he's had like a lot of these ulcers in everything Exactly And cancer you know years ago And he just didn't put two and two together And I hope that nothing happened to the brain Of course You don't get oxygen in Well let's do this Like I say let's do this one step at a time He's breathing now and he's in good hands medically And you know I'm glad they checked with you You've expressed your wishes because some people would say no I want a DNR I want to do not resuscitate And that's what he was trying to find out from you If you wanted that and you don't and he's going to call for help you know like social services who I know And I'm going to talk to the hospital and see what other hope they can give me for like the house and stuff or getting stuff And right And hospital tomorrow And you know it's literally you take it almost minute by minute and don't overthink it at this point And just know in your heart that the lord does work in mysterious ways and how this is supposed to be I know and I read a lot of books too or sometimes when people in their cardiac arrest They go into the light for a minute and then they come back because it's not their time Right And we don't know when it's our time But the good news is they are doing everything and you are going to call in the morning about social services and you're going to call me tomorrow night we're on for all three hours to let me know how it goes Oh I will and I just I just can't believe Raleigh that this is I mean I'm just sitting here And I'm thinking I just can't believe this Of course not Nobody could As far as that goes now John talked to you Kathy had called in and will be taking you to the hospital if you want So you've got that number Oh yes That's good Yes a very nice So if you want to go or if you can go But I'd get social services at the hospital on the phone immediately because right now we're working on two things The doctors are working on having rodo have a good outcome but all of social services will be working on having you have a good outcome Right So I don't even think I could sleep well You're going to try but like I say find something on TV that you want to listen to and or watch And try and it's impossible to get your mind off it for any length of time But even for a few fleeting seconds if you can and maybe you will drift off and get some sleep You'd be surprised I'm just I don't want to be scared No Because I know I know I know miracles yet and I read the books and I know and I send I give donations to a church kind of Copeland and I called them And I talked to prayer ministers and everything and everybody a wide range of prayers is out there with God and Jesus And ultimately it will be their will and you know that and no matter how it turns out will be the way it supposed to turn out And if you truly have faith in that then there's nothing to be afraid of because no matter what the option is it's God's will Right And so you just keep your mind on that And go from there But do yourself as much of a favor as you can tonight to try and get some sleep because keep this in mind If you don't sleep it's not going to change the outcome but you'll feel much worse tomorrow If you do sleep you can start a fresh and tackle the day All right You know that'll make you stronger tomorrow and the first thing you'll do you call the hospital to talk to whoever the social service coordinator is and you'll go from there Okay And they said that they would call me even Yes No if something were to happen they will call you even if it's the middle of the night and just be praying of course for the best outcome but ultimately his fate is in God's hand and we never know the day in the hour and it will work out the way it should I Watching Phil Spector work in the studio. You both became lovers. Did that add a certain drama to your performances when you worked together? It may have, but I guess because I was, you know, performing so much before I met him. I just had that, I love performing. And I don't think he by falling in love with him made me any better as far as my singing. I just think he knew what materials to pick out for us. You know, song, wise, I be my baby walking in The Rain. And it was just a great producer. Walking in The Rain, we heard someone be my babies. Why Carrie Snodgress' Career Didn't Go Anywhere
"But she stayed with Neil Young on the ranch and as you can imagine, she did a lot of drinking and cooking for the men and her man mainly as she told me and she said all she wanted to do was have his kid and be a mom. And his fate would have it. She did have his baby in 1972 and sadly the little boy Zeke was born with cerebral palsy. And at first Neil Young was very loving, always there for her and the boy, but then he began to get distant and he was either too drunk or too high to care a lot of the time. And I mean, Carrie was no angel. She could put away the liquor, but she swore to me. She never took anything harder than an aspirin. Booze was her poison. Then she said, Neil just started hanging out with the guys going to LA alone and not calling for days and meanwhile the kid who was severely challenged couldn't even talk. And then one day Neil comes back and says he thinks it's time for her to leave. So he sends her and the kid to LA and his lawyers begin to shuffle them between all the homes, kneel either owned or rented. And in the beginning, he sent money on time and the kid got good care. And then when he decided to marry the waitress who worked at a diner two miles from the ranch named patty Morton, he just cut ties with Carrie and his boy. And then carry out the sim for child support and all that, at least shit. But oddly enough, his next woman, patty, gives birth to another son, and that boy also born with severe cerebral palsy. And then eventually, Carrie was able to get some work, but it was never really the kind of work she deserved to get. And, you know, on top of that, people, the word was out. She chose to be away from Hollywood for almost 7 years. Hollywood doesn't like you when you do that. You're out of the club. And then sadly, the mad housewife character that made her name kind of followed her became her life because she was not very good in her choice of men. She began dating this musician Jack Nietzsche, who worked with Neil, and also was Phil Spector's right hand man. He wrote the theme songs for one flow of the cuckoo's nest and for an officer and a gentleman. But they broke up in one night, he breaks into her home, and he threatens to kill her. And she told me he shoved his pistol in her vagina and threatened to pull the trigger. He pleaded guilty to threatening behavior and was fined and put on probation for three years. And then 1981, she marries this painter Robert Jones, but that fizzled out after a few years. And she would tell me these stories and she would cry a little bit and tell me, you know, there's not a lot of men to want to stick around with a woman with a severely challenged child. Phil spector as the combination of this gifted individual. I mean an almost singularly gifted individual. This is somebody who could sing. Who wrote a number one hit song and recorded it at age. Eighteen who rose dramatically through the ranks of the record industry on his own record company flat out by the time he was twenty one and a half or so jacqueline and say no. His records was another of resentment against phil. Facts up So he pulled everything into that into that record with.
