"If I were, maybe I wouldn't want to listen to these playlists and listen to a bunch of new songs because I'd be young and I would be experiencing new things. I would say yes, I'm making this music my entire personality now. As I did then. But it's now X number of years later, that music is still my personality. I want to hear the music that I listen to a decade plus ago. That is the only thing that I want. I do not want to playlist. I do not want suggestions. I want to hear the same songs that I've already heard, possibly you could remix them and blend them together. That's cool. No new music. But I guess that's a problem for Spotify. That I don't want to listen to the new things. Well, so underneath that is the real problem for Spotify is that you listening to hits from the 90s over and over again. Does not actually make those artists any money. And maybe it shouldn't, right? Like in the CD era you would buy that CD, you would listen to it for the rest of your life. That artist would not get money every time you listen to a CD. But they got a lot of money up front for the CD, right? And that usually sustained most artists. Now it's like the game that they're all playing is like pennies forever. So Spotify has a lot of incentive to make their catalog artists or like the catalog artists from major labels happy. Because no one is getting the big dollars up front. They're all just getting pennies over time. But they still have to break new artists into breaking artists. You got to shove them people's faces all the time. You got to break new songs. And I think all of this stuff is in a real tension with the other piece of what they announced, which is an emphasis on video podcasts and showing you little clips of video podcasts in the feed as you scroll. Because that is just a jarring transition from like, here's the hook of a song, here's the hook of a song. Do you like this playlist over here? Here's three people talking about whatever. Which is admittedly what we do here. Hi guys. And we'll probably figure out how to get involved in that on Spotify. But there's a lot of stuff. There's a lot of business models. They're trying to cram into one experience. But this is the magic of TikTok. Like, that thing you just described is the thing that has made tiktoks so powerful, which is that it can be wrong about what you're going to be interested in. 9 out of ten times and TikTok that endless vertical scrolling thing with video and sound is like immersive enough even when you don't care about what it is that it keeps you scrolling. And that's like, that's the magical thing that TikTok solved is most of the time you don't care about the thing that's being shown to you, but the price of TikTok being wrong is so low because the scrolling experience is so fun that you will just keep scrolling even when you don't care about the content. Like the activity is enough. And what that gave TikTok permission to do was just shove stuff you don't care about in your face all the time to see what hits. And everyone is copying that for exactly that same reason, right? Like that's what Facebook is trying to do. They're like, are you interested in this? And you say, no, I know what about this and you say no, and they're like, what about this? And they'll just do that. And Facebook can't figure it out. Is it girls? One bikini girl, no matter what at all times. And I'm like, no, no, no, it's trucks jumping over stuff. I want to be very clear about this. I literally typed the words into the search box. And every couple of weeks, I was like, I don't know. Just one thing that'll make your wife mad. Mine is a blooper in the office. It's just like when in doubt, TikTok just show me bloopers from the office, and we're cool again. Everything's fine. But no, but that's the thing. And that's why you do that extra visual thing because it's just constant. There's just so much going on in a way that like, if you show me 8 seconds of silence at the beginning of a song on a playlist or like a slow building guitar, people are out. But if you just play loud noise over and over again as a scroll, that's gonna keep me engaged. Okay, so the 70s music in the 70s. That's when we started getting the long guitar solos and stuff. Before that, in the 40s and 50s, Phil Spector horrible man did now. But he made the wall of sound, right? He was coming to him. Did you play Russian roulette in the lady died? It was not great. Unbelievable. Dude, wore a cape to record music, but in the face and 60s, where in his little cape, he created a whole new way of listening to music, which was just blast it into your ears on every single, like he was like, I'm gonna make it really, really loud, because everybody's just listening on radio. And so the louder it is, the more they'll be likely to sit around and listen, which is why we have The Beach Boys, but also all of those great bops from the early 60s. So that's just kind of what they're doing again on TikTok. Pretty

"Dreams Phil Spector co wrote it and produced it Sonny Charles and the chick mates limited on a and M in 1969 and it was a hit Phil Spector wrote it with Tony wine by the way And Larry Levine I think or Irwin Levine was one of the co writers as well But anyway got to number 8 on the R&B No yeah 8 on the R&B chart in 69 13 on the pop charts So I would say that's a hit Ruth may not have remembered it but certainly many of you will So there you have it 888-876-5593 ask and I shall receive Stacy is back Well it's been a couple hours how you doing Stacy Hi Wally Can you hear me okay Loud and clear Good good First I want to say happy birthday to Albert and Leah And I want to thank everybody for the well wishes And I want to ask you how you're doing I can't complain at all I'm just concerned about you tonight Stacey Talk to the other doctor called Good And he said doing everything that they can and he wanted to fill me in on what happened He said at one point rodo he just may have to he had a cardiac arrest Right And they recess hated him Good And he said to me if you know God forbid is the only thing again Do you want it Do you want a DNR Yes I want him to have all the chances because everybody is praying for him Okay And we've been together a long time And he said they're going to do another type of operation where they're going to go in and inside again with the scope or something And I forgot what he said They're going to look at all of the angles inside The abdomen and all of that And they're going to make sure maybe they'll find something else which is causing the other bleeding That's so scary that they don't know why And so he said that once they do that they're just going to close it up They're going to I forgot what he said they're just going to tape it up close it up So nothing else can get out of here And he said that they're going to do everything He's got round the clock everybody's there And he's the ventilator is just to keep him breathing And he wants to get him on his stomach So they could do something else And you know he's going to be under But I forgot you know all the technical terms That's okay And I said I want you to do everything because I said doctor everybody Everybody is praying And I said even while he came up and he says you're doing wonderful he says everything And he says we'll call you And he says but your husband is very very sick man because he's had like a lot of these ulcers in everything Exactly And cancer you know years ago And he just didn't put two and two together And I hope that nothing happened to the brain Of course You don't get oxygen in Well let's do this Like I say let's do this one step at a time He's breathing now and he's in good hands medically And you know I'm glad they checked with you You've expressed your wishes because some people would say no I want a DNR I want to do not resuscitate And that's what he was trying to find out from you If you wanted that and you don't and he's going to call for help you know like social services who I know And I'm going to talk to the hospital and see what other hope they can give me for like the house and stuff or getting stuff And right And hospital tomorrow And you know it's literally you take it almost minute by minute and don't overthink it at this point And just know in your heart that the lord does work in mysterious ways and how this is supposed to be I know and I read a lot of books too or sometimes when people in their cardiac arrest They go into the light for a minute and then they come back because it's not their time Right And we don't know when it's our time But the good news is they are doing everything and you are going to call in the morning about social services and you're going to call me tomorrow night we're on for all three hours to let me know how it goes Oh I will and I just I just can't believe Raleigh that this is I mean I'm just sitting here And I'm thinking I just can't believe this Of course not Nobody could As far as that goes now John talked to you Kathy had called in and will be taking you to the hospital if you want So you've got that number Oh yes That's good Yes a very nice So if you want to go or if you can go But I'd get social services at the hospital on the phone immediately because right now we're working on two things The doctors are working on having rodo have a good outcome but all of social services will be working on having you have a good outcome Right So I don't even think I could sleep well You're going to try but like I say find something on TV that you want to listen to and or watch And try and it's impossible to get your mind off it for any length of time But even for a few fleeting seconds if you can and maybe you will drift off and get some sleep You'd be surprised I'm just I don't want to be scared No Because I know I know I know miracles yet and I read the books and I know and I send I give donations to a church kind of Copeland and I called them And I talked to prayer ministers and everything and everybody a wide range of prayers is out there with God and Jesus And ultimately it will be their will and you know that and no matter how it turns out will be the way it supposed to turn out And if you truly have faith in that then there's nothing to be afraid of because no matter what the option is it's God's will Right And so you just keep your mind on that And go from there But do yourself as much of a favor as you can tonight to try and get some sleep because keep this in mind If you don't sleep it's not going to change the outcome but you'll feel much worse tomorrow If you do sleep you can start a fresh and tackle the day All right You know that'll make you stronger tomorrow and the first thing you'll do you call the hospital to talk to whoever the social service coordinator is and you'll go from there Okay And they said that they would call me even Yes No if something were to happen they will call you even if it's the middle of the night and just be praying of course for the best outcome but ultimately his fate is in God's hand and we never know the day in the hour and it will work out the way it should I know Thank you Ali All right We'll talk to you tomorrow And I want to thank everybody for their prayers I really really appreciate it And God bless everybody Well yes you too and take care of yourself and I hope for some good news But whatever the news you are going to get through this I promise you that All right well thank you All right God love YouTube It's tough And when we're in life and death situations which it sounds like Waldo is you know our prayers have to be for the highest good and the best outcome on a selfish level of course they're very singular You know bring him back no matter what But the reality is that when it's in God's hands we just have to pray for the outcome that is best and pray for the strength and the guidance to get through whatever it is But so tough when you're alone just so terribly tough and I feel very bad for Stacy especially on that front So I'm glad that she has everybody who is listening to this show on her side and hopefully hopefully it's just something that will pass but either way we will be here So we will get to Marianne in Chicago We'll get to James on the south side and hopefully we'll get to you but if we don't remember we got three hours tomorrow night right here on WGN radio Don't forget to.

"And he said, I like to meet you girls the next night at mirror sound here in New York. And we couldn't believe it, and we did. And yeah, we sat down at the piano and it mirrors sound. And it feels that sing me some songs. That you guys just, you know, you know, no off the radio. And of course, by my loving Frankie Lyman, I started seeing white if it was fall in love, ABCs of love, and he immediately fell in love with my voice. And he said, that's the voice I've been looking for. Once I started working with you, did he make suggestions to you and the ronettes about changes he wanted to hear on either the harmonies or the lead vocals? No, because first of all, the background weren't just my sister and my cousin. It was like, we had about ten people. There were sunny, there was darling love. He had like ten, ten, 20, and he would make those double those voices. So I don't know. It was very complicated in the studio, but it was watching him work was a miracle to me. Watching Phil Spector work in the studio. You both became lovers. Did that add a certain drama to your performances when you worked together? It may have, but I guess because I was, you know, performing so much before I met him. I just had that, I love performing. And I don't think he by falling in love with him made me any better as far as my singing. I just think he knew what materials to pick out for us. You know, song, wise, I be my baby walking in The Rain. And it was just a great producer. Walking in The Rain, we heard someone be my babies. Welcome to The Rain, one of your favorites of the records that you recorded. Will be my baby is my number one. I love it forever. And walking in The Rain, I love it too. Yes, I really do. I love that too. Why don't we hear a few seconds of it and then we'll talk about it. Okay. Okay, this is the wrong nets. I wanted. And I made it. And someday somewhere well I'll be there. You be kind of like and we'll put a little bit too.

"Born to run would be his epic the title track of that third lp and the single that would make good on the faith his band and his managers. The critics and dj's had all placed in him in bruce's mind he was reaching for and haunted by the sound of one legendary producer. Phil spector we've talked about specter in several prior episodes of hip raid the irascible imperious dangerously violent and yet unquestionably brilliant songwriter and producer. Who forged many classics of the sixties girl group and harmony vocal era central. To specter's legend is his famous wall of sound a dense backdrop of instruments and vocalists specter would mix in mono for maximum sonic impact at his sixties peak. Specter's tracks rang out with guitars. Brass strings and an army of percussionists as on this nineteen sixty three number.

Why Carrie Snodgress' Career Didn't Go Anywhere

"But she stayed with Neil Young on the ranch and as you can imagine, she did a lot of drinking and cooking for the men and her man mainly as she told me and she said all she wanted to do was have his kid and be a mom. And his fate would have it. She did have his baby in 1972 and sadly the little boy Zeke was born with cerebral palsy. And at first Neil Young was very loving, always there for her and the boy, but then he began to get distant and he was either too drunk or too high to care a lot of the time. And I mean, Carrie was no angel. She could put away the liquor, but she swore to me. She never took anything harder than an aspirin. Booze was her poison. Then she said, Neil just started hanging out with the guys going to LA alone and not calling for days and meanwhile the kid who was severely challenged couldn't even talk. And then one day Neil comes back and says he thinks it's time for her to leave. So he sends her and the kid to LA and his lawyers begin to shuffle them between all the homes, kneel either owned or rented. And in the beginning, he sent money on time and the kid got good care. And then when he decided to marry the waitress who worked at a diner two miles from the ranch named patty Morton, he just cut ties with Carrie and his boy. And then carry out the sim for child support and all that, at least shit. But oddly enough, his next woman, patty, gives birth to another son, and that boy also born with severe cerebral palsy. And then eventually, Carrie was able to get some work, but it was never really the kind of work she deserved to get. And, you know, on top of that, people, the word was out. She chose to be away from Hollywood for almost 7 years. Hollywood doesn't like you when you do that. You're out of the club. And then sadly, the mad housewife character that made her name kind of followed her became her life because she was not very good in her choice of men. She began dating this musician Jack Nietzsche, who worked with Neil, and also was Phil Spector's right hand man. He wrote the theme songs for one flow of the cuckoo's nest and for an officer and a gentleman. But they broke up in one night, he breaks into her home, and he threatens to kill her. And she told me he shoved his pistol in her vagina and threatened to pull the trigger. He pleaded guilty to threatening behavior and was fined and put on probation for three years. And then 1981, she marries this painter Robert Jones, but that fizzled out after a few years. And she would tell me these stories and she would cry a little bit and tell me, you know, there's not a lot of men to want to stick around with a woman with a severely challenged child. You just make me feel like shit when I heard

"And that was ladies. Fan leonard cohen. Now leonard. cohen. Seems like a really. How did the blue partner for phil spector. But this is something this project whose very passionate about what drew till specter to leonard co and vice versa. Yeah what what drew together actually was was they both shed a manager Cocco monte michelle And it was michelle who initially together as you said. One couldn't imagine more incongruous really I mean cohen poet songwriter. Who as we know At stabbed himself as much to his surprise as anybody else's with these very very low key introspective the melancholic of spam recording. He's just a company phone petar or with small so of chamber which chamber colts at Very very quiet very very contemplative. The complete antithesis of of anything phil spector was known for suddenly spectrum was known foreign in his glory days They liked each other bizarrely And and they seem to get on world together despite everything that happened during the sessions sessions. I hate to keep seeing the same old refrain. But but the sessions were for the sessions were drunk And phil was still have one hand on the controls and one hand on the manage. Shave it So i think you know things things go. It's like texting complain. The specter would have him doing votes without those went over and over again and then just use. The guy vocals which covered himself wasn't happy with this. I think was happy with the with the with the finished result. It was the other thing that can be most memorably had to say about. Those sessions was about the guns And guns everywhere I'll put your code. Actually said he said spent an. I couldn't resist annihilating me. I think he can tolerate any other. Shadows in his. Oh darkness just manson. He's to life and with children is very coined Which is nice with children but i think I i think code I think he he likes him. And if this was necessary the guy even but it must be said that to serve. You brought out a very very different than coen and again. It's it's a record that many many people hate coen's many current devotion follow his. Hey because it's such a departure. But i think it's it's. It's the most interesting redwood. The name cohen may And so lots of different arrangements. Somebody in some of these arrangements Again usa string these choirs it's a very. It's a very very unusual unusual Current and going back. Just just for a second to talk about gums This is something that the the the the code said he said. That's what these sessions were really about down people to see you were biking revolvers in your hamburgers and at one point Specter famously bottle of wine anymore. Hand on a on a pistol. The came up to the pistol in his neck. And said i love you and with admirable aplomb just move comes to one side and i said i hope you do fill. But he lived. He lived to tell the tale And again it's it's it's a curio but it's it's a really really interesting curio. Anna singular curia definitely worth a few listens. And then there's one more last gas project in the seventies for fill and and that's the group the ramones which is another out of left field choice but something about what wasn't the drew fill to mount. I think what the moons was jerry remote. I didn't feel it was a great fan of punk rock and i and the whole sensibility and coach for came with it. But i think it'd bizarre way. He saw joey as a sort of male. Ronnie spector away Joey now the new new york kid Imagine standing on the street twenty years and you mentioned standing on the street corner Surrounded by a bunch of other kids forming acapella group and and that he could actually Mold joey Until the other the other three members of everybody they say we're pretty much cheaper for this stephanos requirements. I think Which of course is nord them enormously and became very very quickly. Apparent where phil would spend hours in the studios working on joey's vocals and the others would be left to keep that in the tropicana motel or very sponsor wherever they happen to be hanging out. I think that'd be. Were the you know they record an album in ten minutes and it was still taking weeks and weeks and weeks dragging on a jerry actually colder. Interminable amount of time the wins on that he was working on this And i'm sure it wasn't good for the health or mental physical of the of the other members of the group invoked in this more guns one point p people gone on dvd. I do think i should add. I didn't think in in pulling these people identity every really intended to pull the trigger which passed may not sound much in the way mitigating circumstances But i think it was done in a spirit of bravado of genuine. Genuine menace And by this point. I'm this is i think very interesting but at this point it's always what people did phil spector institute and being a rock and roll record producer. Gave him a license to behave in a way that anybody else in any other field in any ought patients the guns would have been away from and if he'd been a lawyer or even a doctor behaving the way that he behaves somebody would have would have put a check on said food. You really can't behave like this. You know and and And it'd been some kind of intervention and the taking quite often and have proper psychiatric care. Because i do think it was a mental illness. The he was He he was suffering from but because it was still spach out there. There was a kind of map license. This is won't feel. Does this field goes through. Get saudis comes still acts crazy That's just fill fill It was it wasn't just building still. It was something deeper more and sad within that And took a long long time for that so to really be interested and to be dealt with head on think and after that he withdraw from the industry and actually has a decade of pretty normal life. He in with his montana assistant janice avala and a have Twin children a son and daughter and there for a decade or so fills actually kinda got it together in a quiet way. I think that's right i think. I think johnston all a.

"Terrible for penalty for shooting yourself in the foot metropole. Absolutely david geffen was the wrong kind of enemy to make at that point in time The yeah i think i think you know it's a measure of of how strange Phil spector become from the prevailing friends in music. At that point guessing was Was was was doing very very nicely. Thank you With us like mitchell. Jackson browne crosby stills and nash of spent had absolutely zero interest in any of these people. You know they will kind of music. It's all adding regard. I love them. But he regarded them as as as an absolute fronts or to to to rock and roll kind of rock and roll but he'd been making And and as you say the david geffen the node been sort of incrase. You know who've been very happy to be to be just hanging on in the studio With his jaw dropping watching spencer working complete to be around him and and suddenly. There's he burgess us this very powerful industry player and i'm sure that would have cultural specs as well and he does keep trying though he cooks up with Faded rock and roll legend. Dionne and they do an album together tells an aetna now when actually gets finished i'll fill cry. Didn't produce all the tracks talk about that attempted collaboration. Well i i actually think this is. This is a terrific record Very few other people seem to particularly the time deal didn't like it The end been served well by by by specter And of course he was only twenty years later the people began to talk about it as spencer's forgotten masterpiece. It's a record that That seems to be when you play the rebel. That seems to be playing sort of twenty four off pm thirty three pm. It's it's probably the slowest most like most of the group's record the phil spector's ever made And and again. It's the if the wall of sound inex- chelsea's i mean it's it's an extraordinary extraordinary sounding record deal. I didn't even knew each other back in the back in the early days the runaround sue days They thanks from the bronx And of inspectable border from that. That is something that we did the on. Sue him the fact they were both new year. Old boys Fantastic voice of course the deal and had some sort of reinvent yourself as as singer from day on the rocker But there's some there's some terrific on their There's some terrific terrific arrangements. I mean at times. It sounds has the mormons have requesting behind greco. It's a it's a very. It's a very wholesome production And i think deal. All the felt that He was he was overwhelmed and engulfed. Enroll the well. Ill served by this And of course. I hate to say it but it was. It was still being drunk again. I mean you mentioned shave it some this this. This is almost as many shaving thousand really. Come in with the repulses of this stuff Stan ross who is the engineering on that wrestle remember that Hey share that. And we don't know. I need this themselves. And it'd be there lugging this jewish ritual wine Out of the buffalo while he was producing and inevitably things we get increasingly tests the increasing the out of order. You're right to say wrestle to the actually finished but it is we're all gonna miracle and it's well worth a listen like you say especially if you put it on a good stereo turn it up loud. It's it's definitely the wall of sound and full effect in it. It was out of sync with commercial trends at the time but Something well worth hearing it and a good good album must here a little bit.

"Very strange elements. It's it's it's still about wanting to control people Wanted to happen under his Not wanting to leave when they want to the All of this is this. Is the this this. This sort of incubates like like a cancer inside him and jumping ahead enough south myself here. But i think this actually reaches. It's it's it's it's most malevolent flourishing in definitely on the fox You know he was somebody that wanted to lead people and and he wanted to save money. And i wanted to do and she wasn't she wasn't really I bypass new. Means we she domestic person who was cut out to be cut after being. Good his wife. Somebody said When we couldn't even an egg so she wasn't gonna be sitting in the Saving kitchen devising and the fishes sort of south nuisance if he feels stomach happy She had a painting by numbers set. And she walked. They signed soaps and work on her fingernails. I think that was that was her existence for many many years. That's not that's not an existence which is gonna make you happy. so when we come was very bitter very rancorous very acrimonious eventually fled from the house with her mother. A romanian up athlete to get away And of course. The default supplement was was very putin. Save with phil And and he got his revenge by Washing on the back of east check. If i can use a four letter word but beginning with. They're all on the fact of the check that he sends it through our mindy so that the the bank was shown over over the the jack. And there'd be this This expensive living there so We ended up hating her. And i think she ended up patient and it wasn't. Fema come astle and around this time. He adds another element to the mix when he hires amending george brand to be his bodyguard. And this adds the frisian of guns and gun. Play and tussle about george brand and phil spector's relationship because it seems like brand ultimately took care of phil and phil children. I mean was a protective force but same time added this real palpable minutes to the. Ara phil spector. I think that's right. I mean jewish became not just his bodyguard. He became missile general. Thanks coach became a member of the family He had a room in inspectors house Up until that point There's no indication that goes bodyguards. Carry guns i mean. He likes to surround himself kind. Experts in martial arts and like refrigerators you know feed guys who can often themselves But jewish grand karrada gun and at that point we begin to hear about are carrying a gun and becoming very negative kettering guns guns guns around holsters around his ankles. You buy guns around the house Bizarre stories about him Making making telephone that suits or to record executives business school and he'd be there with with a sort of gun on the table gun in his hand while he was making these calls they could sit not aware of it but almost almost to sort of empower himself. In some way. I think gums made him feel bigger than you. Wars guns gays in the sense of a sense of confidence so deep came to see himself in the godfather. And i mean that quite literally i mean he would sit down with the two brothers who amy sort of apprentices in a way these were the sons upon the castle on the seventy. The great wrestled soon the the sound days. The castle brothers At his guidance able i made out seem go for them. Come sit at my table. You know he literally sort of acting out scenes with with with with Phyllis don corleone. He began to read into his sort of in place. It sensor so reinforced his sense of self. And of course it also exacerbated fact that tendencies that i mentioned earlier or not ones into people to go of intimidating people. "Think that's absolutely right. And i think that's a measure of the respect that he had for for john lennon And also Connection through connection by by the rather grudging respect the yoko. Not because i think she was there as actually was ruled signs atlanta side in that period And specs i sort of rally led me to believe that you know she. She had all the more to say about the record. And the way the reference should be made than than than inspector would necessarily life But he was prepared to Indulge shall we say. But i think it's i think it's a that that record in particular is a measure of how much spectrum could or degrees degrees expected could actually boroughs ego berry sense of grandiosity in the service of the artist and that is compared to the usual phil spector productions now is incredibly stalled incredibly stripped back almost naked. You might say it's were the reviews some It's a very sparse Sounding record old which actually perfectly matched the the themes of the songs because that's that's the almonds Final scream album Sounds like aw. I don't believe in jesus elvis people's i guess leaving me mapa of love. You know those are some in which land is really really battering soul and i think the recognized and respected the fact different man's burying his soul. It doesn't need to do it with the wall of sound behind. And let him bears so and then around the time he starts working with george harrison. George harrison's tackle for solo album all things must pass and that's very much a collaboration between harrison inspector. Talk about the dynamics between those two on not creating that masterpiece love and respect joe charts And it goes. This was a very important record. Patrols charleston's bay to georgia pin storing up songs over over the previous few years The beatles hadn't used on their albums and this would really his trump to stem straight his brother frustration abilities as a songwriter and an and as an independent creator and i think specs a respected net as well but again the approach. She was like different. I mean it's it's much more. Recognizably of a phil spector record or feel special production. One should say And you know he applied the same techniques he be fooled the road studios with a of musicians speed dramas including ringo starr. All keyboards homes put certain guitarist including eric clapton. Accruals and it's recognizably phil. Spencer wrestled i think are recognizably. Phil spector productions. I i think that's the i think that's the best sort britos album there ever was. I think i think is a better album than than any of the any albums. A better out of the chances made off the back. It's it's a terrific rippled but it's sort of ended inches a little bit I think by then spent two. He was out of his comfort zone. Geographically been in london. He didn't like to travel He didn't like being in england. He didn't like english television. He didn't like english food. You didn't like staying in english sale Each started drinking more heavily so so he was he was getting a bit out of hand in the studio I think tampa's begins afraid a little bit and eventually Abandoned the sessions Leaving george to do the vocal autopsy on guitar jobs which i've been rather rather puzzled. An anger chose harrison As as somebody said later what if you're charleston call. Look i look after his thompson of oklahoma dopson tolerate who can but it's not a produces duty. I do think to leave the office to do that. There was another funny Memo that expect you're actually filed two hundred and from back in america Giving him sort of specific.

"To relate my feelings and that was phil spector with the personal message that he closed his famous phil. Spector's christmas album and this is a project that he poured everything into in the summer of nineteen sixty three. Tell us a little bit about this. And what it's ultimately. Fate was a of christmas albums And he like christmas indeed jewish as he was He was very nominee with the with the with the notion. Of the quintessential american. Christmas or the quintessential anglo american christmas if you like chestnuts roasting around and old bloke fire and fake snow on christmas tree and slave bells santa claus and all of that kind of stuff. white christmas of goals by jewish songwriter of berlin Which was never slow to point out The most popular christmas song ever ever ever written the hats so we got decided to do a to d do christmas album and this was also a way to bring together all of the phillies office under one under one umbrella. And and and in a way to show off the label to show off his office And to show up himself. Mostly it's cold phil spector's christmas gift for you Motown christmas albums. they've never grew. Very gold is christmas. Gift for you. so again. This was very much about filled in about thrilled. Stampings and premature on it and december rule the team in ghost up through the course of Scorchingly hot august Haven't trump this. Christmas answer in the middle of august And i mean absolutely fantastic record And then some of the most terrible of face because the week it was released Was the same week in which President kennedy was assassinated and up to that. Nobody was in. The mood for phil spector's christmas album and the antelope died died. A very sad Commercial debt but interesting. It's it's one of those records just going on and on and on and i didn't know what happens in america but certainly here in britain You know christmas coming because you begin to hear all these before. Christmas album songs on the radio and they still played incessantly And the christmas wouldn't be christmas without macos of christmas album. And that's very much true In the states to this day and immediately on the hills of the kennedy assassination the beatles role in from england and conquer. The world and a beatles are huge. Phil spector fans you know. They had done a version of to lubbock to know him is to love him at their deck. Auditions john. lennon in particular loved phil. Spector's productions inspectors excited by the music. But this is harboring or of change that he never really recovers from. I think that's absolutely right. The yeah I mean he was He was in london plugging the row next door over here And he was in london. And you're back into new the beatles on the same plane as as the beatles When when they landed in ninety sixty four And if you put some of that you can see phil shuffling down the airplane steps behind the wearing corduroy basis kaplan. I'm looking rather sort of all the chance to be in the company of these of this new new quad sensation And of course it was. It was a relationship with the were done. has spectacular results. Some years lisa Right at the very end of their career with the let it be album and then joined that and george harrison and so forth but that particular time of the british invasion the beatles herman's hermits some believe may seem to recall freddie. The dream is even more unbelievable as it may seem to recall People in commend the rolling stones. The british invasion really swept away. She swathes of american popular music at that time. Dominated ways dominated the media. All the excitement was was about these. These extraordinarily long head kids from london kids from liverpool coming over with this. What appears to be a by refreshing sizing use on And it made the of sound made bills waller to sound sound sound pretty old pretty quick and it didn't mall 'cause demis immediately of course Had a big hit with the romance. Walking in the rain was Was off features. That arrived in america and then as we've said you've lost that loving feeling and And then river deep mountain high. But i think he was. He was rather blindsided by. But by this and and unsure quite how to play this quite what to do He actually design the rolling stones to phillies. Which would have been really really interesting about. I would have been a pretty amazing thing to see He was friends with the manager. Andrew oldham we'd fancied based lot of his moves as a manager on still andrew oldham idolized phil And when phil spector came to britain For the first time he met andrew oldham andrew calls it in took him around town introduced into various people And they went along suits to deco to try and get a decade to The rolling stones label to try. And get a decorative surrender the contracts to Do that is because decker. Were having absolutely nothing to do with that And businessmen recession with actually play on the rolling stone session and and gene pitney turns out with contrary just coming from coming from france So at least he's a high times and good signs but I personally i would love to see. Spectral produce the rolling stones. I think that we've been really really interesting thing. But that was not be an. And i think the british invasion as i say it will not seen for six and sixty five. You know he. He makes it through kind of bluffs. His way through sixty four and away has the enormous success with the righteous brothers. And that sort of overshadows how much who was struggling then in sixty five. He tries this on the young rascals and ahmet ertegun of atlantic beats him out literally they're having a showdown they're both schmoozing the band the same night Hitting back and forth like a ping pong table and amish wins that. He tries us the lovin. Spoonful who are about to become one of the hottest folk rock bands. Going john sebastian. Thanks phil spector would probably be the wrong producer for them and he was probably right and then he signs a folk group in los angeles the modern folk quartet ever really fascinating some with them but he never releases ed.

"Author of tearing down the wall of sound. The rise and fall of phil spector mic. Welcome point very nice. It'd be here thank you. yes this is. I think the definitive biography of phil spector. And you were lucky enough to interview him in his mansion weeks. Before the tragic death of clarkson extraordinarily fortunate he hadn't given an interview for many many years and i was able to secure that interview And went out to Los angeles admixed fooled releasing him over the course of an afternoon And then shortly after that as you say Came this terrible incident where shut down the clocks And interesting what what he said to me in interview describing his mental state about being relatively insane and Having demons inside him and so forth that back very sadly became the template for rule that was written about phil spector thereafter But i have to say that. The phil spector. I met was was very charming. Funny one of those fascinating interviews. I've had and that's kind of the economy. I wanna i wanna get out a little bit with. Phil spector as the combination of this gifted individual. I mean an almost singularly gifted individual. This is somebody who could sing. Who wrote a number one hit song and recorded it at age. Eighteen who rose dramatically through the ranks of the record industry on his own record company flat out by the time he was twenty one and a half or so jacqueline and say no. I mean it's extraordinary extraordinary phenomenon Nikkon very fine English writer member memorably described him. As the first cy kunsi Hang on let me get that right. Sorry off It was told. Thank you. yeah you're you're right Phil spector wasn't sure So moved very many memorably described as the first tycoon team and uniquely. He was a producer who was bigger than his office. and and a producer who actually stamped his identity very very much. The music Irregardless of who. He was recording so they weren't Kristen's records or righteous brothers records liberals those of the names of the is on the label. They essentially phil spector records and that fingerprint unique and indelible So he was he was. He was the first producer superstar. Ready any he has an pretty much unmatched run of hits from say six eight sixty one tell sixty four had what fifteen twenty top ten hits in a row something like that. Yeah i i think ninety sixty three resist. I and miraculous Where he had successive hits by Daunting love the crystals were nets. of course one after the out the by these And then of course we have the righteous brothers. You've must that loving feeling Which i think is probably still one of the most if be most played record ever on pop. Music radio River deep mountain. High by i can see in. Its own He he was a phenomenon so many what what he does really is that he is out that era between the first Gusto blast rock and roll in the late. Nineteen fifties with artists. Like little richard and fats domino chuck berry it's rematch between the arrival of the beaches And the british invasion in america in ninety sixty four and period between from as you say prepar. The late is through throughout sixty four sixty five a spectrum was just about the hottest thing in american pop music and yet by age twenty six. He invests everything into one last monumental rolling the dice with a single with i contain a turner river deep mountain high. It's stiffs in the us. And essentially he goes into retirement at twenty six. That's true mean that's a very very important in his career because i think by that point The feeling in the record industry was already but the wall of sound this unique sound the spectrum prison the feeling was that he was grabbing kind stale And i think specter was aware of that so he was also that he wasn't terribly popular man in the recording industry itself so this joke is becoming less and less inclined to play. His records was another of resentment against phil. Facts up So he pulled everything into that into that record with. I can see And some people would say is the actual sort of some nation as it were the wall of sound. That's not my view. My view is that the crystals records Do wrong ron And certainly you've lost that you've lost that loving feeling to me. Those those are the actual sort of really ethics spectrum productions. I i find the river deep mountain high a little bit of a complicated little over cluttered the fact that it was a it was a terrible failure in america and there are lots of reasons that have been abandoned so that one is that it was neither a black radical. Nora white record one is as i say that the street was all set to take revenge. On phil spector but whatever reasons especially it was absolutely crushed by this and he actually took out an advertisement in the american trade Trade magazines benedict on was right sizing. The degreaser traded sided with the british against the americans. Because the record have been a number one record. In in britain britain always loved those specs. a a never lost that love for him but in america he become cold and he withdrew from the industry for many many years. And that was that. Was the death knell of spectators. Great moment in rock and roll and so now that have given kind of a pocket history of his initial rise and fall. Let's go back and talk about his his origin. Where did phil spector. come from. What was his family like. He was born in the bronx in new york in Thousand nine hundred forty And grew up in a working class household in in in the bronx His fault for still company and tragedy struck very own like his father killed himself. When phil was nine and the family which is to say fill his mother and his elder sister shirley moved to los angeles and i think he was very much a fish out of water in los angeles Here he was. This is small Or runs ish looking pail Not serve repossessing young man Suddenly cost into this land of the gods in in in la with propential- sunshine which spector hated. Never liked sunshine wasn't interested the slide. Bit all wasn't interested in the slightest bit in the beach I also things went easy for him at home I mean giving the his father. Children self There was a lot of anger and a lot of sadness in the family and a lot of rowing and phil was constantly being put upon by both his mother and his sister. Somebody describes it as a tag team in wrestling. These two rooms take turns picking on poor little still so he was. He was the out cost very much but he had he had this one great ruling grace. Which was that. He had a.
