"Joseph i in the two part refugee drama in sun-scorched land and then cooper and then kayla and trae how much of the family was in your mind when joseph showed up in the sun. Scorch land episode. I knew i wanted him to be the father of a family like I don't think i knew exactly at that. Point how many kids and all that but I really loved that character. And when the actor came in phil morris who we've worked with numerous times he's just a warm and he person and He really loved that story. And he had kind of a background that he was very familiar with that type of Of story and It just he seemed like a perfect fit To be to be in that family and to build that family around him but he was the original start to that. So let's talk about the other members of the family and how they arrived at just the right time. Well cooper showed up in patron the playbook and then trey and kayla Were introduced in the show. Good job now. Trae at that point was played by an actor that ended up not really working just because he sounded too old for that part yet. She sounded even older than his brother once. We did a playback of it so we ended up recasting. That part with a wonderful actor. Paul mccall williams and We've just. I've just loved how the family has melded together. And i love each actor that plays a part in that so is it true that kayla was not kayla at the beginning she was. She had a different name. Well when i first. When i wrote the first draft she was named kalisz sta and i started having second thoughts about so i actually sent dave arnold a whole list of names that we could use instead and we settled between callisto and kayla and i liked kayla. Just a bit better. He liked callisto. Just a little bit better so we asked the actress in the studio and said which one do you like better. And she said kayla. That's where it came from. That's where we landed very good. So how did you decide what each of the other family members was going to be like. Did you write about family history. Even though they entered a different places well.

"3 36 Philip Morris, the maker of Marlborough is buying up drug delivery companies, some of which make treatments for smoking related ailments. Why, well, Todd Frankel has taken a closer look for the Washington Post and spoke with the most Taylor inside. It's easy to see why folks are uneasy about Philip Morris buying these companies. What's the end goal for this? The Titan of tobacco. Yes. Phil Morris, uh, knows that smoking rates are on the decline worldwide. And, you know, they made their money. Stolen cigarettes in that business is going away. And so they've transitioned slow, I think must have seen them transition towards vaping or E cigarettes. But they realized that even that is not a future that also stand them for very long. And so they're looking to go what they call to a nicotine free initiatives that will be part of their smoke free future, And that includes buying up companies that have raised some eyebrows. Yeah, this is sort of the definition of conflict of interest. How quickly is Philip Morris hoping to turn a profit from this sort of Beyond nicotine business model for their goal, they say, is to earn $1 billion in revenue by 2025, which is would be a very small Piece of their overall revenue They make about $28 billion a year. But you know, they been criticizing her by these companies. As you point out that they, um one company back. Tura is based in Britain makes the COPD uh Medicine, inhaler and also asthma inhaler, and both of those things are made worse are caused by smoking. They are also trying to buy a company that makes an inhalable form of aspirin to that would be used to treat heart attacks. Another side effects of smoking. And they say that they're not trying to actually, you know, get the user on both ends. You know when they buy the cigarettes and then get sick from the cigarette They say that they're trying to look for like synergies in what their expertise is which is like injecting and inhaling different medicines. Whether it's nicotine or something helpful, like COPD medicine. I don't know that I would buy that if I were a shareholder, though. I mean, is there a sense that That may be shareholders will say no, we aren't going to sell our company to Philip Morris that they've had a lot of pushback, you know, so bacteria license based in Britain and British regulators are looking at that. And Philip Morrison bid for the company came out of the blue. Actually, they will be bought by a private equity firm, and they did. Their offer was so much higher than Victoria shareholders say, You know, how can we turn this down? And they Any received assurances from the company that they won't interfere with what they're doing and won't be tainted by their ties to big tobacco. Any other cigarette companies ditching tobacco in the same way, or is Philip Morris kind of the the only one right now? They're the only ones you know The other companies Altria, Uh, you know British tobacco companies Japan Tobacco company They All have moved towards the Vaping or, you know, e cigarette movement. Everyone I think sees that cigarettes. You know, the burning of tobacco is on its way out, but no one has been as aggressive and it's you know, sort of pushing the envelope here like Philip Morris International's doing. "The world is actually all about vapor and we jumped in snack style. We noticed that Phil morris wants more than fifty percent of the revenues to be smoke free by twenty twenty-five smoke-free revenues is referring to i coast which is their smokefree tobacco. Product that philip morris zones all the jack this like vaping but it heats actual tobacco leaves instead of some kind of silky oil. That smells like manga. The silky oil mango thing. That's vaping right. Which philip morris also just launched a vape by the way. Yeah so they own. Both i coast which is heated tobacco and your conventional jewel style vaping products. But here's the thing. E cigarettes vapes. He tobacco they all get the same addictive nicotine to satisfy existing smokers so the pivot seems to be. We're not gonna make money on smoking cigarettes and not know but we are going to make money when cigarette smokers switch to some other tobacco products. Exactly interestingly jacket. i noticed they've made some interesting acquisitions. Yes philip morris. International acquired the company behind nicorette gum. Which helps you quit. And they acquired an inhaler company so this is like pepsi buying weight watchers right. Philip morris isn't gonna make money on smoking anymore but they will make money when you try to quit smoking and jack. Because they own an inhaler to philip morris canal. Also make money as you suffer from smoking. So what's the takeaway for our buddies. Creatively over at philip morris. Can we not call buddies. Vaping saved tobacco snacker. Cigarette sales actually peaked in the united states. Back in nineteen eighty-one before us. Yes and there's been a forty year decline since then. Cigarette sales today are one third of what they were in. Nineteen eighty one in the us. You actually garage sales. They were on their way out. Philip morris equipment out a business and then they were rescued by vaping in these heated tobacco products. Same nicotine same addiction. Same stunting brain development the long term impact of vaping and heated tobacco and lungs still. Tvd we need time to figure that out the messed up thing. Vaping doesn't have the baggage of cigarettes and that's why it's growing vaping is. Cigarettes is less dirty less smelly but still unhealthy reincarnation. And that could be why phil morris is so excited to sink it cigarettes but embrace the vape vaping saved tobacco for our third and final story fancy legend. This hawks news no is this is drudge report but they have a terrible terrible writing staff clearly other businesses have taken a different tack including toronto restaurant. That's the point up. The bar strip. Club phil morris told the toronto sun at steph for all fully vaccinated customers will be required to have at least one dose. I don't understand that one dose. Everybody also happy for the july weekends. Everybody okay you know how. I don't know if i really choose to celebrate the fourth of july. You know my independence day was td seeing the fair very fair. You know. i'm just but just in case anybody out there is you know. Feeling festive whatever. I'm filling filling. No work on. Monday is how i feeling. Yes yes. that's the real celebration. When they said when they. They gave us a half day on friday and give it today off on monday. I was like oh. Usa number word. I'm outta here liz. How has your week been. How have you been since the last casual t week. It's been sort of like the beginning. Has kinda shitty. 'cause i was. I got so sick this past weekend. It was horrible. It was the worst cold. I thought i had cova for a second. Come on you. Got the vaccine. You got madonna. No less like you're probably fine. But i've since gotten over like around wednesday and been a lot better and so the end of the week is been his in pretty smooth sailing and i'm just excited for this weekend. Isn't that crazy though. How covert has affect our lives in. You can't even have allergies anymore like you have the common cold. Because this allergy season. I was sniffling up a storm. And i'm like oh shoot as jakovic is colbert. And then my allergies. Like you know. I'll lose my sense of smell. Because i'm like so congested so like every night i'll be going to sleep and i'm like i can't i can't like so it's just crazy to think that like how affected we are just like you know. I don't even want to call from public. Even if it's like you know just flying by what was weird for me. Was this friday. Because you don't want out tonight. It's like literally my first like outing in. I can't even tell you and i went to the mall. You know just thinking you know what i could get. You know. Try put you look a little. Did you go to the mall. Yesterday i was up at the willow grove. I was at philadelphia mill. How come on. Oh not ooh not the mill. Why is that bad. You know. I'm not from here so i'll be no i mean it's not bad but like it is that's is that even a mall but i mean i mean it's definitely i mean i've been to. I've only been to keio p. and philadelphia mills indefinite. Kp is definitely yes. The mills is like year. When i used to go as a child. It would be like there. There were like seven of the same stores half in the win. Even be open. But we ain't and my jew it used to be called franklin mills mall ninety day trying to like you know rebrand. I know my friend. My philly native friend was like it's not. It's not philadelphia moses franklin muslim. I'm pretty sure. It says philadelphia on the sam but okay right laments. But this is what. I've noticed when i went to the mall head on school i was like i know i was like august. The mandates not here to some of the people in the stores didn't have it on. I don't think okay. I mean for the most part all of the workers had an on and and me by i was just like oh okay so we we outside and inside with them ask on and yet it was just weird i mean just it took me a while to get used to the mass because you know me as a black man. I'm not trying to go on those the mask and you know i kinda sorta got over there and i kind of like the mask because you know. Listen if got a haircut the you'll cb but it was really interesting just to be like an i. Maybe me and a handful of other people had their mass going in the mall. And i was just like okay. This is weird. But i'm gonna keep my mask gone. No yeah it's definitely a guy walking around the mall. Yesterday people elects to not have their mask on. it was just like what a paradigm shifts like like a year and a half ago. I'm ashley what is that. What who is that who she. But now i mean. I can't imagine leaving the house without it nowadays. So right aren't having it as just like okay. I mean that's a choice choice. I may listen. But and so you know the cdc said if you fully vaccinated. You don't goss to wear it but i'm just saying like i know all your holds up here is not next to native okay like i just know. But over the government said we didn't get our goal at seventy percent. So i know that there's at least three hundred ten. Y'all don't get shit on so but then it just makes me like I'm a nervous. Because i'm like i'm going out tonight and i'm like my friend is having event is you and me aren't at the phil morris. I'm so excited just to like go around some melanie native people and listen to some jams by gal was i was thinking about that today. I'm like am. I going to wear a mask when i go in. I don't know if these are all of these things that i think about and i'm sure everyone kind of thinks about as they like reince her life and of course if i'm around like family or friends or people that i've been around like you know my covert circle. I don't wear a mask but this is probably my largest event that i'm have gone to in over a year so it's just as giving me a little anxiety nerve wracking especially i mean especially for me like i just got sick like it was just like damn like you start you know going out and feeling free again and then wham something hits you and the fact like after i got my second vaccine a week later i get strep throat. It's like damn like i dunno. I live right like i mean what. What else is there. What else you have for me lord. Because obviously you're sending in trials my way so it is definitely. It's it's a little nerve wracking. But i mean i have the i had a suspicion that when you walk in there tonight. Most of the people would not have masks i. I'm i'm kind of thinking as well and so like it's just really like i mean vaccinated. So is fine but it's still just like. Oh i mean you know. Hopefully you know i have a little crock. Telhami system and you know the fillmore is a pretty big place and i know basis if this very specious and i know that they specifically to not sell like four capacities so i mean whatever that means but you know i still have like. You know i don't know but it's this cold delta verion thing going around like and i understand that viruses mutate. That is the nature of the virus will mutate is pass from host to host. Make themselves better. I get it but it's still. I mean they found that it's already more infectious now whether or not it's more deadly i mean data is still coming in on that but i just think that it's just a it's a reminder that we're not kind of out of this yet and we still don't have a cure for kobe. We might have vaccine. But that's not a cure. People people have been getting infected with the delta variant that have been fully vaccinated. So there's just you know still stuff out there that we don't necessarily know so i just urge everyone just been the safe side. Just you know where where you ask you know i mean i think that we can see the light at the end of the tunnel but we still gotta get there. You know what i mean. We're not now for sure. And i always just be like i just think it's so interesting. How maybe four months ago on the news all you heard was cova cold recover covert kogo you wash now and if anything but there and so i just i don't know i just.

"The environment was great. Wasn't oppressive or anything. So of those two episode do lauren. One of them was directed by jonathan west. But i want to ask you a little more about anson williams who we mentioned of course pots him. Happy days He did a few episodes of ds. Nine and voyager. What was it like being directed by potsy. I i was like do. I wanna take direction room. Boxing like left but he was actually really good. Yeah i liked his ideas and it was. It was interesting. He he worked hard. You know to try to not be potsy so you know. He overcame that. So yeah he he was. He was good. How'd you describe his style of directing was he like an actress director Directly address definitely definitely an actress. Director actors who become directors are my favorites because they understand the process. They also know i mean there's a lot of directors that will intimidate in yale in that doesn't work for actors you know that just makes you clam up and feel worse. You know so. He understood the environment. You need to work in collaborative environment about it. So did you watch yourself on those episodes when they first debuted on tv. Yes i did. I mean this is so strange back then you would have to hire. There's one guy in hollywood anytime you're on the tv. He would find it for you and he would tape it for you. Lived in this house in hollywood this. I can't remember his name. He he was really overweight and almost like a hoarder because every single room was just filled with vhs tapes. And you'd call them up and you would pay him and go. Look i'm going to be. I don't know when it's on. But i'm going to be on. They didn't even tell you when you're shows are on so he would track it for you and find you and then he would tape them for you so i got to see. I don't think i watched it live. Because you didn't know when it on and i i had two children poynton also shooting power. Oh yeah. I was shooting power rangers at the same time. When did the second episode They were really nice with my schedule. And i just had a baby and So i was shooting the sexual power rangers series at the same time the second episode. So i i didn't have time to watch myself so this guy would tape everything for me.
